TradeWinds Guest Guide

Welcome aboard!

Whether it’s your first time or you’re a seasoned seafarer, we’re delighted to have you aboard for a journey full of truly unforgettable people, places, and experiences.

In the last two decades, we’ve shared the magic of our planet’s most precious and plentiful natural resource with more than 60,000 guests. Our goal has always been to create an unmatched luxury experience that leaves a lasting impression on our guests without leaving a lasting impact on the oceans. And we’ve truly done all that we can to ensure that this remains true.

It’s not an exaggeration to say that every single decision we make as a company is made with the care and conservation of our stunning waters in mind – from the elimination of plastics to the use of non-toxic, marine-safe products and far, far, beyond. And as such, we’d like to encourage our guests to be an extension of that philosophy by being mindful of what and how you consume while spending time on and, especially in, the ocean. Because we believe that the ocean is kind to us in part because we do our best to return the favour.

But, of course, you are the reason that we do any and all of this. And to make sure that your stay is as fun, safe, and fulfilling as possible, we’ve put together a brief guest guide for you to read through covering everything you need to know about making the best of your stay with us. Please take a read while you settle into your cabin. And then sit back, relax, and let us take it from here.

Welcome to your cabin – your personal space to relax and unwind for the duration of your cruise.

We want to make your stay as comfortable as possible and although there is limited space aboard the yacht, we’re sure that you won’t be disappointed.

All of our cabins come with ample space for your belongings and each has been fitted with quality mattresses to ensure that you get a good night’s rest!

We’ve put together some handy hints so you can enjoy your cabin and ensure that you get the most out of your stay with us.

Your overhead opening hatch will allow fresh air to get into the cabin and there’s nothing better than the fresh sea air, so keep it open when needed. We do ask our guests to ensure that hatches are closed when the yacht is underway.

We understand that sometimes it can get hot, so please help us to conserve the power used when the air conditioning is on, by ensuring that the hatches are closed.

Fans and lights

Please remember to switch off fans and lights both in your cabin and bathroom whenever they are not needed.

Port lights

Should opening port lights be fitted on your yacht, please ensure that these are closed daily before we set sail to prevent water coming into your cabin. We might be at sea, but we want to keep you dry unless you’re going for a swim!

Power points

Our AC power onboard is 220 V or 110 V depending on your yacht. Please speak to our friendly crew should you wish to use electrical devices.

Fresh water

Although we’re sailing on a vast expanse of water, we kindly ask you to sensibly conserve fresh water onboard at all times.

Onboard toilets

Marine toilets are different from those in your home and require thoughtful use. Please operate them as instructed by your crew. The toilets only accept human waste and a conservative amount of toilet paper. Please do not put beauty wipes, cotton wool, floss, napkins, or any other personal toiletry items into the toilet – trust us, it won’t be pleasant!

If you have any questions about your cabin, then don’t hesitate to speak to your crew, who will be happy to help

Your Safety on board

Your safety is of the utmost importance to us and we want to make sure that you enjoy every moment of your vacation!

Keep hydrated – reach for the H 2 O

It’s easy to get dehydrated when you’re enjoying the heat of the sun. While at sea, your body needs more water than usual, so remember to drink plenty of water regularly. As part of our Plastic Pledge, instead of single-use plastic bottled water, we opt to use reusable water bottles on board. We’ll provide you with refillable water bottles which you can use throughout your vacation – so you remain hydrated and refreshed while having lots of fun in the sun!

Stay safe in the sun

  • Whether you want to top up your tan or just want to enjoy a warmer climate, don’t let the sun ruin your time onboard. Be sun smart and follow these useful tips: Slip – Slop – Slap! Slip on a swim shirt! Slop on some reef- safe sunscreen! Slap on a hat!
  • Don’t forget to protect the tops of your feet, the back of your neck and behind your knees – in fact, anywhere that doesn’t see the sun much. Re-apply your sun lotion often and as soon as you get back on the boat or go onshore!
  • Where are your sunglasses? Remember to wear them!

Enjoy the sea

  • Only enter the water when the motors are off and your Captain has given the “OK!”.
  • Your crew will let you know of any adverse conditions before you enter the water.
  • All our yachts supply swim noodles, these are great floating devices and keep you easily visible for your crew and other boaters.
  • Ask your crew the depth of the water before deciding to dive from the yacht.
  • Your crew will always be happy to run you ashore and closer to snorkeling sites.
  • When planning to swim or snorkel always let your Captain know where you plan to go.
  • If you’re not a strong swimmer, then please tell your crew.

Enjoy an all-inclusive vacation with TradeWinds

From the moment you step aboard, get ready to relax into vacation mode, and indulge in a fabulous week of all-inclusive luxury and unforgettable experiences. What a great feeling!

  • All meals served onboard
  • Water and Fuel
  • Professional Crew

TradeWinds Air-Conditioning policy

Many of our guests want air conditioning on our cruises. Whilst this is understandable, we also cruise in some of the most precious, unpolluted waters in the world and as a company, we have a responsibility to protect this for both our guests and the next generation.

We believe we have found a good balance between minimizing environmental impact, and giving you a level of comfort aboard.

We encourage you to open hatches and feel the breeze. It’s that very breeze that allows us to sail in the first place!

Aboard all TradeWinds vessels

  • Air-conditioning is run on the dock when on charter.
  • Running of air conditioning will depend on the size of the generator and usage of the battery charger and water maker.
  • Air-conditioning can be turned on in the evening whilst guests prepare for dinner.
  • If necessary air conditioning can be turned on through the night until 7 a.m. from when the first guest goes to bed.

Jacques Cousteau

The TradeWinds concept began in the mid 1990s with a dream of cruising stunning turquoise waters, of scuba diving and exploring breathtaking coral reefs and watching the sun set over secluded islands.

More than twenty years later, our dream has become a reality, and we’re incredibly privileged to spend our days cruising across seas and oceans. Taking our Members and guests to fantastic destinations across the world. Discovering deserted beaches, beautiful atolls, and secluded cays. Diving into the unknown to explore a mesmerizing underwater world that only a few get to truly experience.

In reality, the sad truth is that our oceans and their ecosystems are being destroyed, by man. It’s a bold statement and one that is often hard to swallow. But it’s not too late and we still have a chance to play our part in making sure that we take responsibility for our actions.

At TradeWinds, we take our part caring for the environment incredibly seriously. In fact, we train all our base staff and yacht crews around the globe to live and charter green, and we encourage our guests to do the same. Over the course of your stay, you’ll experience first-hand how our dedicated crew ensures that we practice what we preach. Living green is easy, the hard part is educating people to become eco-friendlier!

Our yacht building partners, Fountaine Pajot, who custom built our range of luxury catamarans exclusively for TradeWinds are also committed to preserving the environment, crafting yachts innovated for green cruising.

As an environmentally conscious company, our base staff and crews do their part in helping to protect the environment and its these small steps that over time can, and will make a big difference.

And as testament to our successful ‘green living’ agenda, we’re proud to have been awarded the Charter Yacht Broker Association’s Save the Blue Challenge award in both Antigua and the British Virgin Islands.

Our responsibility to the environment

The ocean covers more than 70 % of the surface of the planet and makes up approximately 97 % of the earth’s water supply. However, the sad truth is that harmful pollutants are destroying our precious marine environment both above and below the surface. This fact alone is just one of the reasons why we’re so passionate about looking after the stunning waters that we are privileged to spend our days cruising. From the plastic debris that pollutes oceans and pristine beaches, to harmful toxins found in sunscreen that poisons coral reefs, it’s up to us to help save this incredible ecosystem.

It’s our responsibility to protect and preserve our environment both onshore and at sea, not only for this generation but for future generations too. Which is why at TradeWinds we believe that the only thing we should leave behind is just our footprints in the sand!

At TradeWinds we are environmentally conscious

We continuously strive for a greener planet. This takes effort, interest and commitment. As such, we hope that you will assist us, the environment, and our planet, by supporting this worthwhile effort.

From training our base staff and yacht crews to live and charter green, to collaborating with yacht builders who share our passion to be environmentally friendly, we strive to live by our promise to look after and respect our environment.

As an environmentally conscious company, we do our best to take care of the waters we sail in whilst maintaining our fleet of yachts at each of our bases. We ensure our crews have access to everything they need to provide our guests with a superior yachting experience, making as little impact on the environment as possible.

Our responsibility (continued)

Maintaining our yachts.

Our dedicated crews maintain our yachts using a range of eco-friendly and non-toxic cleaning products. Vinegar, baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, biodegradable soap (without parabens and sulphates) and essential oils are used to clean galleys, cabins, heads, surfaces, as well as linen and towels. We ensure that non-toxic products are used onboard at all times. In the event of any unwanted bugs, areas are treated with Diatomaceous Earth and Borax which are both non-toxic and eco-friendly.

Using a high concentration of toxic chemicals has an enormously damaging effect on our oceans and so we work closely with our base managers and yacht crews to provide them with the training and equipment to maintain our fleet of yachts using eco-friendly practices.

Eco-friendly onboard

We use some solar power but it’s still important for guests to remember to turn off fans and lights when they’re not in use. We manage our systems so fuel is used to its optimum, ensuring that marine conservation is always on our mind.

Air conditioning on our boats is supplied for our guest’s comfort, however, please be aware that we still need to limit its use. If you decide that air conditioning is not required to cool your cabin, make your captain aware, to avoid running the generator all night.

We ensure that all our menus are planned in advance, using the freshest produce available to ensure minimum food waste whilst onboard. Reusable food containers are used instead of plastic wrap and aluminum foil.

To help reduce the amount of plastic that sadly makes its way into our oceans each year, we don’t purchase plastic bottles to use onboard our yachts. We shop consciously and instead choose eco-friendly and recyclable materials, such as reusable bottles and containers.

Our guests have access to freshly filtered water onboard and reusable bottles that they can take with them onshore.

Many of our guests love our onboard activities, such as fishing. However, extreme overfishing in certain destinations, such as the British Virgin Islands has meant that we have made the conscious decision to no longer offer it to our guests onboard as an activity. As Jacques Cousteau once said, “The best way to observe a fish, is to become a fish”, and we couldn’t agree more!

Sylvia Earle, Oceanographer

Our responsibility (continued 2)

‘going green’ with our guests.

We advise our guests to be aware of the types of products that they bring on board with them. Environmentally friendly and all-natural products are better for you and they’re also better for our oceans and marine life. Choosing a reef-safe sunscreen and non-toxic products is a great way to help preserve the delicate reef ecosystems. To help repel mosquitos, we have an eco-friendly insect repellent and an all-natural sting relief available onboard, just ask your crew!

TradeWinds are dedicated to providing a first class service to our guests, without compromising our environmental promise. Let’s work together and help to preserve our sailing destinations for everyone to enjoy.

Reef-safe Sunscreen

Did you know that using non-eco-friendly sunscreen and personal care products can induce coral bleaching and cause irreparable damage to the marine ecosystem? Sadly, many lotions and potions that we use contain toxic chemicals that are poisoning our oceans and fragile reefs. The main culprit is regular sunscreen which can wash off once you enter the water leading harmful chemicals to seep into the corals. And it is these chemicals that poison the ecosystem relied on by marine flora and fauna, including algae, fish, urchins, mussels, and dolphins, to name a few.

The good news is that reef-safe sunscreens are widely available, making it easier than ever to stay safe in the sun while looking after the environment. Here are our top tips:

  • Check the ingredients before you buy! Avoid sunscreens that contain oxybenzone and octinoxate as these are two of the most harmful chemicals that are responsible for coral bleaching and DNA deformities.
  • What SHOULD be on the reef-safe sunscreen label? Look out for ingredients like Zinc Oxide, Titanium Oxide and make sure your product is Non-nano, Paraben-free, Biodegradable, Cruelty-free, and Non-GMO.
  • Use shade or cover up! We hate sunburn, so when the sun is at its hottest, grab a hat, sunglasses, and T-shirt. Or step on board your luxury catamaran for some shade and protect yourself from the harmful rays!

Your guide to marine conservation

According to the Plastic Oceans Foundation, a global network of independent not for profit organizations and charities, more than 8 million tons of plastics are dumped into our oceans every year. Studies have shown that it will take approximately 450 years for plastic to degrade in water!

We want our guests to help us start a movement to ensure that we continue to respect and care for our marine life and oceans. Humans cause the greatest threat to the deterioration of coral reefs, but we can also help to educate and encourage better marine practices.

When you book a luxury vacation with TradeWinds, you get to experience the natural beauty of our surroundings, both above and below the water. The marine environment is a delicate ecosystem, that’s why we encourage our guests to remember the following:

  • Don’t touch – look and appreciate. Some coral will die at just one touch and some sea critters, although they might look harmless will sting you!
  • Don’t take anything – leave those lovely shells behind.
  • Don’t stand on reefs – you will kill hundreds of years of growth and possibly cut your feet on the sharp coral – and trust us, there’s nothing more painful!
  • And remember, while visiting Marine Parks all fishing is strictly prohibited.

Get involved in marine conservation

Even when your vacation has come to an end and you’re back on dry land, there are plenty of ways to care about conserving marine life, from the comfort of your own home. What we do on land, often has an impact off shore too.

Follow these simple steps at home and you can help to preserve our precious oceans:

  • Buy reusable water bottles and food containers
  • Don’t buy products that have been made using coral or other delicate marine life
  • Use environmentally friendly cleaning and personal products – check out our eco-friendly recipes
  • Choose sustainable seafood sources
  • Take part in local beach clean-up programs
  • Use all-natural and eco-friendly hair and skin-care products

To help protect our marine environment, we need to become conscious of our own actions. Sometimes we overlook the small things like buying a plastic bottle of water from the store, because it doesn’t ‘affect’ us in our everyday lives. However, we all need water to live and our seas, oceans and marine life need our help to survive too.

Together we can help the environment by becoming ‘water wise’ and being eco-friendlier at home!

You can create a wave of change at plasticoceans.org. Visit oceanservice.noaa.gov for useful information to find out how you can get involved with conserving marine life.

Sailing Qualifications

To skipper a bareboat charter or flotilla yacht, you need to hold a practical sailing certificate equivalent to RYA Day Skipper Practical qualification or RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) . For charters in Greece, you must now have the ICC certificate . You must also be assisted by at least one competent crew member over the age of 18.

The port authorities in Greece are now insisting on one of the following practical certificates: RYA ICC (International Certificate of Competence), RYA Coastal, RYA Yachtmaster, ASA IPC (International Proficiency Certificate) or the IYT (International Yacht Training) Passport. If you hold an RYA Day Skipper or ASA104 it will no longer be accepted and you need to obtain either an ICC or IPC from the corresponding issuing body (RYA or ASA). If your RYA Coastal/Yachtmaster or ASA105/106 certificate is more than 12 years old and does not have a photo ID, then we would also strongly advise applying for an ICC or IPC. If you are a member of the RYA or ASA, you may qualify for a discount or free certificate, otherwise, you will have to pay. The approximate cost is £50. Please use this link - RYA application for the ICC or ASA application for the IPC.

For charters in Croatia, Malta and the Canaries , at least one member of the crew or the skipper will also need a VHF licence .

RYA qualifications can be obtained by RYA sailing schools in the UK or alternatively choose from one of our overseas centres in Gibraltar, Greece or Turkey .

For  Seychelles,  the local authorities require an ICC for the skipper of a bareboat or flotilla yacht charter.

For Caribbean and Tropical charters, formal qualifications are not compulsory, however, you should be Day Skipper standard and be assisted by at least one competent crew . A brief sailing resume should be provided to outline your experience.

For Thailand A Day Skipper qualification is required as a minimum and you must have at least 3 weeks of skippering experience prior to your charter. A VHF qualification is compulsory.

If you don't hold the relevant qualifications then why not add a skipper ?

The Baths at Virgin Gorda are one of the most famous natural formations in the Caribbean. Huge granite boulders form small grottos and pools on the water's edge for you to explore and snorkel. Then sail up to the North Sound, a protected bay with a wide choice of anchorages and excellent restaurants.

 DAY 4 : Trellis Bay (10nm)

Snorkelling on the reef at Marina Cay gives you an appetite for lunch. Trellis Bay is a good place to spend the night, home to the famous restaurant and cabaret "The Last Resort".

 DAY 5 : Jost van Dyke (15nm)

Cruise up to Guana Island for spectacular snorkelling and a beach picnic at Monkey Point. An afternoon's sail west takes you to Jost van Dyke. Anchor in White Bay and swim ashore for cocktails at "Soggy Dollar Bar" or in Little Harbour where "Foxys'" is famous for its beach parties.

 DAY 6 : Peter Island (11nm)

Lunch at Soper's Hole Wharf, home of Pusser's Landing, reputedly built on the hideout of the pirate Blackbeard. Afternoon sail across Sir Francis Drake Channel to Peter Island.

 DAY 7 : Scrub Island (9nm)

Watch the sunrise over Peter Island and take an early morning swim in the deliciously warm sea. Weigh anchor for the short sail back to the marina.

Constant warm tradewinds at 10-20 knots provide excellent sailing. BVI is popular all year round with temperatures staying a balmy 30 o C. but the best time to come is November to June. In summer winds tend to be lighter with greater humidity, but there’s still plenty of sunshine. There is a risk of tropical storms mainly during August and September.

There are very few marinas in the BVIs so most nights you are on anchor in a bay with a classic Caribbean white sand and palm tree beach. In many places there are laid buoys which cost US$30/night but give you a safe mooring within minutes of sailing into the bay.

We have rated this destination a 'Level 1'  (levels info) .

Getting There

Flights to tortola (beef island), bvi.

British Airways and Virgin Atlantic have direct flights from Gatwick to Antigua. Inter-Caribbean operates connecting direct flights from Antigua to Tortola (Beef Island).

Scrub Island is a 10-minute ferry ride away from Tortola's Trellis Bay Dock via the resort's private launch. Ferries run from 06:45-22:30 Trellis Bay to Scrub Island and 06:30-22:15 Scrub Island to Trellis Bay. Trellis Bay is just a 5-minute walk from the airport.

The British Virgin Islands are a fantastic place to experience a sail and stay holiday. With daily flights, you can really make the most of your time in the Caribbean and combine a yacht charter with a hotel stay in the BVI or even Antigua.

British Virgin Islands Sailing Journal by Hannah, Nautilus Yachting

This was my second time sailing in the British Virgin Islands. The first was 5 years ago. This time I returned with a large group of friends (11 in total) and an even larger catamaran (Fountaine Pajot 47 “Island Nomad”) to a fully reopened BVI in the build up to just before Christmas for a special ‘Big BVI Birthday’ celebration with a capital ‘B’.

British Virgin Islands Sailing Journal by Hannah, Nautilus Yachting

Day 1 - Nanny Cay Marina

Half the crew arrived by ferry into Road Town from the USVIs as they were travelling from Florida. The European contingent flew into Antigua the day before and caught an early connection to Tortola with Inter-Caribbean. The flight is only an hour but the propellor plane will always be a novelty.

With a large crew we made quick work of loading the pre-ordered provisioning from Riteway, securing the watersports Equipment provided by BVI SUP Co, and acquiring a quick take-out lunch from Omar’s Café in the marina. After a full briefing we departed Nanny Cay Marina promptly at 15:00 and headed to our first night’s stop.

Nanny Cay Marina

Day 1 - Cooper Island - Sailing time approx. 1.5 hours

It was a rather wet and windy short stint heading into the wind to reach the soft sandy shores of Cooper Island Beach Club. It is the perfect combination of relaxed beach-side atmosphere and comfortable dining, the highlight being their rum bar with a collection of over 280 rums.

There is a combination of bookable and ‘first-come, first-serve’ available at Cooper Island but it is a popular first or last-nights stop you do need to be a little organised and pre-book a ball (USD$55) early if you know you will be arriving later in the day.

Cooper Island - Sailing time approx. 1.5 hours

Day 2 - The Baths, Virgin Gorda - Sailing time approx. 1.5 hours

We set off early (upwind again!) to make the most of the day and get to Virgin Gorda early so we could explore the famous 'Baths' before the cruise ship crowds from Tortola arrived. A protected area of natural beauty with globally distinctive rock formations, only found elsewhere in the world in the Seychelles, this is a true highlight of the BVI. You can pick up a national park mooring buoy for free during the day (subject to availability) and it is possible to dinghy your crew ashore but you cannot leave vessels on the beach so some more adventurous crew do need to swim for it!

The Baths, Virgin Gorda - Sailing time approx. 1.5 hours

Day 2 - Diamond Cay, Little Jost van Dyke - Sailing time approx. 2.5 hours

Finally on a relaxing point of sail, we enjoyed a relaxing lunch and afternoon sunbathing under the sails on a broad reach heading towards our pre-booked mooring ball for the night. After a long day exploring everyone was content to have a low-key BBQ dinner from B-Line Beach Grill, the only resident of Little Jost van Dyke. The food was fantastic and the homemade rum dangerously delicious.

Diamond Cay, Little Jost van Dyke - Sailing time approx. 2.5 hours

Day 3 - Smuggler’s Cove, Tortola – Sailing time approx. 30 minutes

Dodging some early morning showers with beach Jenga at Foxy’s Taboo restaurant, we took a window of sunshine to scramble over to ‘Bubbly Pool’; nature’s answer to a jacuzzi. It turns out big kids enjoy giant beach games and a wave pool just as much as children.

Smuggler’s Cove, Tortola – Sailing time approx. 30 minutes

After a short sail back over to Tortola we spent the afternoon by the beach using our Kayak, SUPs and bobbing around the yacht in our Sunchill (the ultimate water hammock for your group to enjoy).

Smuggler’s Cove, Tortola – Sailing time approx. 30 minutes

Day 3 - Soper’s Hole, Tortola - approx. sailing 30 minutes

Almost mid-week and in need of water we decided to tuck into Soper’s Hole for a calm night of re- provisioning. Our pre-booked dock space at the wharf cost US $130 including power and water for the night. Stocking up on any provisions we were lacking (namely beer) was possible at the Riteway supermarket located conveniently opposite our yacht. We made the mandatory stop for sundowner cocktails at 'Pusser's landing' pub and were delighted to find another 'Omar's Fusion Cafe' for dinner which had great selection for everyone’s diverse tastes.

Soper’s Hole, Tortola - approx. sailing 30 minutes

Day 4 - White Bay, Jost Van Dyke - approx. sailing time 1 hour

As the Tradewinds blow 24/7 in the Caribbean we were able to have a fantastic sail back over to Jost Van Dyke, even early in the morning, so that we could get a prime spot anchored off White Bay beach at breakfast. The wind was due to pick up a lot today so we decided to take it easy tucked away in this sheltered anchorage. This is one of our favourite spots and we spent the day swimming and snorkelling from the famous 'Soggy Dollar' beach bar with great cocktails and the best beach hut food.

White Bay, Jost Van Dyke - approx. sailing time 1 hour

Day 4 - Great Harbour, Jost van Dyke - approx. sailing time 30 minutes

There is a lot of space for a secure overnight buoy in the next bay, but to give ourselves maximum time at White Bay and still secure a shore-side location for minimal dinghy taxiing we pre-booked a mooring ball again. Dinner was a casual but tasty affair at Foxy's but we did skip Karaoke for a night’s well-earned rest after a full day of partying.

Great Harbour, Jost van Dyke - approx. sailing time 30 minutes

Day 5 - White Bay, Guana Island - approx. sailing time 2.5 hours

After a few hours of sailing upwind, the crew had all earned a relaxing lunch swinging on anchor in another beautiful bay. This island is privately owned by a resort but all beaches are public so as long as you stay at the shoreline you can enjoy this perfectly pristine and usually completely empty beach all to yourselves. There is a fantastic snorkelling spot at Monkey Point that you can reach by dinghy if you are feeling more adventurous.

White Bay, Guana Island - approx. sailing time 2.5 hours

Day 5 - Marina Cay - approx. sailing time 45 minutes

The services on Marina Cay have just recently reopened for business in 2023 and it has reestablished itself as a lovely little stop. Well-connected to Tortola by a ferry service it is a great option for mid- charter crew changes if you have anyone needing the airport. There are more snorkelling buoys nearby for your dinghy and we took the opportunity to enjoy a group sunset snorkel before dinner. The coral here is really something to see, as well as the turtles. The restaurant food was also top quality, resulting in several crew members developing a new fondness for lobster rolls.

Marina Cay - approx. sailing time 45 minutes

Day 6 - Bitter End Yacht Club, Virgin Gorda – approx. sailing time 2 hours

When looking for somewhere special to celebrate the ‘Big Birthday’, Bitter End Yacht Club was the strong choice, and they were so helpful planning a special evening for our group. Starting with a group rum tasting and exclusive use of their top deck Quarterdeck bar, with views over the North Sound. We followed up with dinner under our own private dining gazebo, and the staff really knew how to look after you.

The resort has several all-day dining & bar options, an extensive offering of water-sports equipment, regular activities like beach Olympics and SUP yoga. It also comes equipped with a local delicatessen grocery store and gift shop. The dockage here is around US $300 including power and water for a large catamaran but you can also take one of their mooring buoys for the standard rate.

Bitter End Yacht Club, Virgin Gorda – approx. sailing time 2 hours

Day 7 - Snorkeling at The Indians – approx. sailing time 3 hours

To reinvigorate ourselves the following morning, the brave members of the crew set of on an early hike to take in the views of North Sound. The newly marked trail was only about an hour but included enough incline to earn the views, and our breakfast.

Snorkeling at The Indians – approx. sailing time 3 hours

On our last full day, we enjoyed a long down-wind sail, cruising along the waves with the catamaran is just how Caribbean sailing is supposed to be. Before arriving at Norman Island, we come to ‘The Indians’ and pick up a National Park mooring buoy for some of the best snorkelling we have experienced anywhere.

Snorkeling at The Indians – approx. sailing time 3 hours

Day 7 - Norman Island – approx. sailing time 20 minutes.

Picking up a buoy in ‘The Bight’ bay on Norman Island, our original plan was to enjoy a few cocktails at the famous 'Willy T' boat bar before moving onto ‘Pirate’s Bight’ restaurant for dinner. However, the atmosphere was too much fun watching the live show of ‘jumpers’ from the top deck that we couldn’t help but join in and before we knew it, we were devouring our last Caribbean cuisine still in our swimwear onboard, not having left the Willy T!

Norman Island – approx. sailing time 20 minutes.

Day 8 - Return to Nanny Cay Marina – approx. sailing time 1.5 hours. Disembarkation by 12:00 noon

Truly maximising our trip we did not need to return to the marina until the morning of our final day. A short racing reach back to Tortola had us in the harbour by 10.00 with plenty of time for re- fuelling, check-out and disembarkation by noon. We had time for one last quick lunch before the crew sadly had to disband, returning to the airport for an afternoon flight back to Antigua or onwards to other islands to continue the celebrations for Christmas.

Return to Nanny Cay Marina – approx. sailing time 1.5 hours. Disembarkation by 12:00 noon

Put a BVI Catamaran trip on your list of things you MUST experience!

This trip was really incredible! For anyone nervous about being "out at sea", this is your call to GO!!! You are always close to land with other boats around, so it always feels safe. If you're worried about sea sickness, I do recommend the prescription patch and Bonine on hand as needed -- It gave me peace of mind, so I wasn't worried about getting nauseous. Each day was a new adventure- sailing about 45 minutes to an hour and a half to each day's new location. The pre-trip communication was excellent, so we felt well prepared! On board, our captain and first mate were awesome! They worked seamlessly together! The snorkeling excursions were so much fun and the water was the PERFECT temp! The food was incredible! Our first mate, spoiled us with three delicious full meals each day! Keep in mind when planning flights, that you can't board the boat until 5pm- but there is a beachy bar and grill on site to wait at. There is a "time share" type of membership chat given, but it didn't feel intrusive and it wasn't time intensive. Our friends actually became members as they could see themselves doing 2 more of these trips in the years to come. Again, this trip is a MUST. I'd love to do another catamaran trip in the future!”

Lovely crew, beautiful sites

We had a very nice crew, but weren’t expecting 4 mates to be on board (2 were in training). So, make sure you know the total of people before booking since this was supposed to be a private cruise. We enjoyed the islands, but would have loved to have had more time at several locations. It’s definitely a scheduled trip from breakfast, lunch, dinner and we craved a bit of time to ourselves. This is a trip that involves the captain selling a membership to other cruises through Tradewinds - which is not his fault, he was lovely, BUT, after the first offer which was refused, the membership was brought up multiple times during our boat time. It’s a difficult situation to get away from being at sail and a bit aggravating to not be able to relax knowing the sales pitch may come up again and again. It may be a good deal if you are interested in cruising several times during the year, but we don’t plan on making the same trip each year. ”

Ellen and John L.

Trip of a lifetime about Tradewinds luxury catamaran

What a fantastic week! Three couples who have been friends for years joined us for an epic sail around the British Virgin Islands. Captain Paul and first mate/chef Renette were extraordinary and looked after every little detail to make us comfortable, pampered and extremely well-fed on the seven day trip. We were spoiled by delicious food, snacks and "captain's cocktails" every day, in addition to sailing, snorkeling, diving, and excursions to various islands. Can't say enough good things about this trip. If the opportunity comes up to sail with Tradewinds in the BVIs, take it! ”

Happy Guests in Nanny Cay During Waypoints BVI Charter

An Insider’s Viewpoint

We charted out of Nanny Cay with Waypoints and were extremely impressed. Very experienced and organized professionals run this base and the fleet is nearly all new boats in pristine condition . We had a minor issue with our dingy outboard (may have been operator error on my part) and they dispatched their high speed tender out to us and had the replacement installed within 1 hr and 15 minutes of me calling. They could not have been more responsive. Brought us a few bags of ice as a courtesy which was a nice touch. Would certainly charter with Waypoints BVI again. Captain Chuck

Waypoints BVI Charter Guests Enjoying Cow Wreck Beach, BVI

We had an amazing experience on an 8-day bareboat charter with Waypoints Yacht Charters BVI. I can honestly say this was the best experience I have ever had with a bareboat charter company . Saying this boat was in pristine condition is an understatement. Anthony and his team are absolutely amazing. This boat was so clean and well maintained that it looked as if we were the first to ever set foot on it. His attention to detail was very apparent, and he clearly took care of this boat like it was his own. If/when I purchase a sailing cat, I would leave it in Anthony’s care without any hesitation. I cannot recommend Waypoints enough. Solomon G.

Waypoints BVI Charter Aboard Tupelo Honey

Just completed a 10-day bareboat sail on Tupelo Honey and had a spectacular time. I cannot say enough praise for this “young/ new” company which is run by very experienced professionals who clearly know how to cater to every need of the charter sailor . The equipment is new and clearly well-maintained by very helpful and friendly staff all in a classic BVI setting of the well-positioned full service Nanny Cay Marina. There is no doubt we will be back. Peter F.

Caribbean sailing: BVIs are back and as beautiful as ever

Yachting World

  • March 7, 2023

The British Virgin Islands have had a tough few years, but one of the world’s favourite sailing destinations is back, and as beautiful as ever, as Mike Pickering discovers

tradewinds yachting services bvi

As the 30-seater inter-Caribbean turboprop aircraft banked to starboard, through my small window I caught a first glimpse of Tortola and the Sir Francis Drake Channel. I felt my pulse quicken. This idyllic stretch of water was where I had my first Caribbean sailing experience back in 2004.

As an 18-year-old, I’d recently moved up from racing dinghies to yachts and was instantly captivated by the quality of sailing, the warmth of the water, and the sweetness of the rum. Now, 15 years later, I’ve returned with my wife, Ruth, whose sailing experience consists of navigating the Solent in inclement weather, and her parents, who have never set foot on a yacht before.

As the chief organiser of this adventure, my main objective had been to find a winter sun location with predictable weather and easy, yet beautiful sailing. The British Virgin Islands fit the bill perfectly. The warm tradewinds provide a consistent north-easterly Force 4, the outer islands offer great protection from Atlantic swells and, with the islands being so close together, navigation is primarily by line of sight.

Stepping off the plane onto the tarmac at Terrance B Lettsome Airport, we were ushered past a roaming brood of roosting chickens into the small arrivals hall and after a quick passport check were on our way to Nanny Cay Marina.

A lot has changed in the BVIs since I first visited in 2004. Back then the islands were experiencing a tourism boom, but that all came to a halt in September 2017 when Hurricane Irma swept over with 190mph winds causing widespread devastation. As we travelled around the islands, evidence of the disaster was still visible five years on.

Photo: Christian Wheatley/Getty

Driving to the marina our taxi driver, Wendle, pointed out various reminders of the impact of Irma in bays around Tortola. The sight was disheartening; boats lay stranded on reefs like beached whales, and shoreside buildings still nothing more than hollow shells.

Despite the international aid that poured into the islands after the hurricane, resources are still stretched thin. And if Irma wasn’t enough, the Covid pandemic and shutdown of tourism further delayed the islands’ ability to get back up and running again. Even now, five years post-Irma, Wendle told us he’s still struggling to find a carpenter to repair his kitchen.

Yachting recovery

In Nanny Cay Marina, however, it was clear that yacht charters are back to business as usual, the marina bustling and full of yachts ready to go sailing. Despite suffering a 75% loss of docking facilities in 2017, Nanny Cay has been able to operate at full capacity for some time.

Navigare’s charter team were on hand to show us to our vessel for the week: a brand new, somewhat palatial, three-cabin Lagoon 46 , one of the newest additions to the fleet. I realised slightly too late that I’d set the bar rather high for future holidays with the in-laws.

tradewinds yachting services bvi

As we toured the boat I couldn’t help but be impressed by the high quality fit-out – the interior just felt very solid. While the three double cabin layout is designed to comfortably accommodate up to six guests, the starboard cabin in particular is the real show-stopper, stretching nearly the entire length of the hull with an apartment-style layout.

As a professional skipper I regularly charter for work, and when chartering a catamaran I prefer one with a full flybridge like the Lagoon 46. This layout keeps all of the sailing equipment upstairs, leaving plenty of space on the lower deck for entertaining. On the flybridge, the helm has all the lines and winches led easily within reach. Even the traveller, located behind the helm, is easy to access.

Spending our first night in Nanny Cay, I reveal our grand plan for the week; with the weather looking as predictable as I’d hoped, I proposed an anticlockwise circumnavigation of the islands. With short passages and a variety of activities planned, the itinerary included some of my favourite spots in the BVI. The idea was to take in all the best the islands have to offer, from secluded bays to lively bars.

Moored off the aptly named Sandy Cay.

The sun rose at 0630 on our first morning and within an hour we set off to our first stop at the Indians, the famous group of rocky outcrops. As it was our first time out on the water and I had a novice crew, I decided to ease them in by sailing with just the jib. With the wind already blowing 15 knots on our port quarter, we bobbed along. In retrospect, this was my first mistake. At 46.5m² the self-tacking jib was a little underpowered for a single-sail Force 4 broad reach, and we struggled to get more than a couple of knots of boat speed. We made our way gently to our destination.

Caribbean sailing 2022: the rules and where to go

Caribbean sailing: Top tips from two years exploring this cruising paradise

My partner Nick and I spent two years sailing in the Lesser Antilles on our Southerly 38, Ruby Rose, after…

Moored up to a free day buoy, it was onto the stand up paddleboards to explore the rocks. Paddling past some shallow reefs, we donned snorkel masks to dive into the water and explore the underwater coral. Before arriving, some friends had managed my expectations, warning that some of the BVI’s reefs had suffered just as much as the land in September 2017, including those off these very rocks. But, to our surprise, we were faced with some of the most colourful coral and stunning displays of fish I’d ever seen. The new coral has grown impressively rapidly.

In the following days, my crew honed their recently acquired sailing skills as we set a course northward toward the North Bight of Virgin Gorda. The first time hoisting the main off Peter Island went smoothly, and we set our sails for a beat to the north-east.

While cruising catamarans are not known for their upwind sailing capabilities, with careful traveller and jib trimming we were able to maintain an apparent wind angle in the mid-40°s and keep pace with the monohull charter yachts nearby. Looking back on our track on my SailTies app, given the angles drawn, it is not obvious we’re sailing a charter cat.

Throughout the week a northerly swell had built and by the time we arrived at The Baths the swell was too big to safely swim to shore. Another plan was needed to see these natural wonders. So, sailing past, we made our way further up the coast of Virgin Gorda to the northernmost end of the island.

The Bitter End

Hidden away in the North Sound for over half a century, Bitter End Yacht Club has lured sailors from all over the world with its laid-back atmosphere and spectacular setting. Boasting near-ideal sailing conditions, and sparkling clear waters surrounded by an array of vibrant reefs, the North Sound is a veritable paradise for sailors.

The Bitter End was almost completely destroyed by Hurricane Irma, but after a lengthy rebuild it has risen from the devastation as a sustainable haven, all-new, but with the same rustic charm that it became famous for. The marina reopened just this season, with 26 berths and an additional 70 mooring buoys just a short tender ride away, while onshore there is a gourmet mini-market, some boutique shops, an informal restaurant and two bars that serve up delicious cocktails.

The resort’s own watersports club offers an array of dinghies, windsurfing gear, stand-up paddleboards , and foil boards for guests to enjoy. With a dive centre conveniently located next to the marina, if we’d had time, a scuba dive of the local reefs would have certainly been on the cards. It was a shame we’d arrived too late in the day to participate in the daily dinghy regatta. Note to self: next time schedule more time for the North Sound.

Downhill from here

Having reached the halfway point of our charter, we faced the prospect of sailing downwind – a relief, with the forecast now hinting at squalls. The second half of our itinerary also involved a new perspective on the islands. While the first few days had been spent exploring the upmarket resorts of the islands surrounding Virgin Gorda, the return passage was all about discovering empty beaches and secluded rum shacks.

Leaving the North Sound, we hoisted our main and unfurled the jib in the shadow of a large tall ship, its towering freeboard offering a momentary reprieve from the wind and swell as we struggled to untangle our poorly packed main from all three reefing lines. The passage to Cane Garden Bay on the west coast of Tortola presented us with the chance to navigate through some of the smaller islands in the archipelago. With the wind on our backs at 120° we sailed at a brisk 9 knots, easily carrying the speed through the gybes to ensure smooth sailing even when the swell was abeam.

Giving ourselves no set plan, only the goal of reaching Cane Garden Bay by mid-afternoon, and with 22 miles to cover and an average speed of 9 knots we had ample time for an unscheduled stopover. One of the most significant changes I’ve noticed since previous visits to the British Virgin Islands is the shift to online systems throughout the charter process, making everything run more smoothly.

Each morning at 7am, I’d use the local app Boaty Ball to book and pay for the evening’s mooring buoy. Thanks to good 5G reception in Cane Garden Bay, as we searched for a spot to anchor for lunch, I was able to use a combination of Savvy Navvy to check the water depth and the colour of the sand, and Navily to read reviews from other sailors’ experiences in specific bays. We decided to anchor at Guana Island and a quick swim ashore confirmed that our research had been spot on, the sand was as light as talcum powder.

However, our 1500hrs deadline was a crucial one, as the Callwood Rum Distillery in Cane Garden Bay was our final destination. The distillery has been producing over 50 gallons of rum every day for more than 400 years, and it hosts informal tours and tasting for a mere US$5 per person. But as it’s only open until 5pm my in-laws, who are rum enthusiasts, might have never forgiven me if we’d arrived late. A relaxed private tour of the distillation process took us on a walk through the sugarcane fields, then back into the ramshackle main building we were able to sample five of their rums.

Iconic spots

The final leg of our tour of the BVIs let us explore the very laid-back island of Jost Van Dyke. Even by Caribbean standards, the level of relaxation here is high. On our sail over from Cane Garden, we stopped at Sandy Cay; an uninhabited small sandy island which, when you take a photo at the right angle, looks to be straight out of a Pirates of the Caribbean film set.

Previously owned by the Rockefeller family, Sandy Cay is now under the care of the National Parks Trust of the Virgin Islands. Arriving early, we secured one of the limited day mooring buoys and, after another quick swim to shore, found ourselves on a deserted island adventure.

Despite its small size, this island was not immune to the destruction wrought by Hurricane Irma, which uprooted many of its trees. Wendle, our trusted taxi driver and font of local knowledge, later told us the devastation wrought upon the foliage was so severe that even the coconut, a staple of the local economy, now had to be imported as the indigenous trees had yet to recover. Since the storm local authorities have worked hard to replant the destroyed trees across all of the islands in an attempt to restore the island’s natural habitats.

We couldn’t stop at Jost Van Dyke without a visit to two of the most iconic bars in the BVI: Foxy’s and Soggy Dollar . Both are reopened and serving their legendary cocktails, including the fearsome Painkiller, with the only visible reminders of Irma being the plaques thanking patrons who made donations to the local community. Anchored in little more than 3m of the pure turquoise sea of White Bay, it’s hard to imagine the journey the island residents have gone through to get to this point.

Picking up anchor, we head back to our home berth in Nanny Cay. Sailing around the westernmost tip of Tortola on our final short leg of our circumnavigation, the morning light shone brightly through Thatch Island Cut, and I’m reminded why the BVIs has always been the perfect destination for first-time sailors seeking easy and safe sailing, as well as long-time sailors searching for idyllic conditions and spectacular scenery. The BVIs are back, and I most certainly will be too.
