Introduction to Gulet Boats

Gulet boats, with their distinctive design and hospitable charm, are an increasingly popular choice for seafaring enthusiasts seeking a unique sailing experience. Originally used by Turkish fishermen and sponge divers as traditional wooden yachts, gulets have evolved into modern vessels that cater to luxury and comfort. These iconic boats are the go-to option for those wishing to explore the enchanting coastline of the Mediterranean, offering a blend of classic allure and contemporary amenities.

Key Takeaways:

  • Gulet boats are traditional wooden yachts primarily used for leisure voyages.
  • They are renowned for their spacious decks, ample amenities, and elegant craftsmanship.
  • Gulet cruises are popular in the Mediterranean, particularly in Turkey, Croatia, Greece, and Italy.
  • Options range from private rentals to cabin charters, tailored to various guest preferences and budgets.

Gulets

A gulet is a type of traditional Turkish sailing vessel, crafted predominantly from wood and characterized by its broad beam and rounded stern. Designed for stability and comfort, these boats serve as perfect companions for serene trips across the sea. The name ‘gulet’ itself is a reflection of the culture and history bound within these vessels, originating from the comparable French word ‘goélette,’ which means schooner.

Gulets stand out from other types of yachts by offering more room for guests. Their broad decks provide an opportunity to bask in the sun and socialize, while their spacious cabins are designed to accommodate both individuals and groups, ensuring a relaxed on-board living experience. The communal areas, such as the dining section and lounging spaces, encourage an atmosphere where memories are made and shared.

In the modern context, gulets are primarily used for charter services, where guests can rent a vessel either privately or as part of a group, commonly referred to as a ‘cabin charter.’ One can opt for a tailored gulet cruise, which guides tourists along attractive routes, providing stops at serene bays, bustling harbors, and culturally rich coastal towns. These journeys, referred to as “Blue Cruises,” particularly within Turkish waters, have become synonymous with tranquility and luxury.

The rise of gulet cruises is not limited to Türkiye—their appeal has stretched across the Mediterranean into the waters of Croatia, Greece, and Italy, each offering its blend of natural beauty and historical splendor. A gulet cruise presents a maritime adventure that moves at a leisurely pace, perfect for unwinding and indulging in the region’s striking landscapes and culinary delights.

One of the most significant advantages of a gulet vacation is the intimacy it offers. Unlike massive cruise liners, where one may feel lost in the multitude, a gulet offers a personalized touch. It’s perfect for families, groups of friends, or even honeymoon couples seeking an exclusive setting to create lasting memories.

A key aspect of the gulet experience is the crew. A dedicated team—from the skipper to the chef—is there to ensure your voyage is nothing short of splendid. Every meal is an event; with fresh, local ingredients, your taste buds will embark on their excursion, complemented by a selection of regional wines.

Now, let’s focus on your gulet itinerary. The beauty of a gulet cruise is the flexibility it provides. Whether you aim to soak in historical sites or bask in secluded beaches, the itinerary can be customized to your desires. Take a glimpse at what a typical itinerary might encompass in one of the more popular regions:

Day 1-2: Bodrum (Turkey) – Begin your adventure exploring the town’s historic castle and lively bazaars.

Day 3: kos (greece) – venture to this beautiful island to admire ancient ruins and pristine beaches., day 4-5: rhodes (greece) – a unesco world heritage site awaits, rich with history and culture., day 6: symi (greece) – stop by to take in the picturesque harbor and neoclassical mansions., day 7: return to bodrum.

With a broad array of gulet types, sizes, and amenities to select from, the choice ultimately depends on your personal preference and the number of fellow travelers. The price for a gulet charter incorporates several factors but primarily hinges on the size of the boat, the duration of the trip, and the season. Luxurious options come with opulent amenities like Jacuzzis, water toys, and gourmet dining services, while standard options focus on comfort and the authentic experience.

Understanding gulet rental costs is crucial in the planning stages. Here are a couple of factors that play a role:

  • Crew: The cost includes wages for the captain, chef, and other crew members.
  • Provisions: Expect to cover the food and drinks, which the crew will prepare as per your preferences.

In essence, every aspect of a gulet cruise revolves around tailoring the experience to your preferences. As you contemplate the soothing rhythms of the sea aboard your gulet, remember that this isn’t just a holiday—it’s an exploration of maritime culture, a journey back in time, and an embrace of sheer relaxation.

Turkish Gulets: Everything You Need to Know

What are Turkish Gulets? And (More Importantly) How Do You Pronounce "Gulet"?

If you've spent any time in seaside towns overlooking the Mediterranean, you've likely seen these distinctive double- and triple-masted wooden boats cruising along the coast. Often referred to as "classic" or "traditional", these old-fashioned-looking Turkish yachts are a relatively recent holiday concept dating back to the 1970s. True, they evolved from wooden cargo ships used by fishermen and sponge-divers, but today's gulets are a far cry from the working ships of yore.

  • All About Turkish Gulets

All About Gulets

Modern day gulets (pronounced goo-lets ) are hand-crafted wooden boats designed and built in shipyards along the southwest coast of Turkey, exclusively for leisure and enjoyment. Design-wise, they have low profiles, making them very stable in the water (terrific if you're prone to sea-sickness ) and well-suited for exploring shallow bays and coves where larger boats are unable to venture.

Functioning like floating hotels, Turkish gulets come with an infinite range of options – from the most basic 1-star hostel to opulent, 5-star, ultra-luxury accommodations, and everything in between.

  • Gulets are always crewed. Passengers don't need any sailing knowledge or experience to enjoy a gulet holiday. (The gulet's size and service level dictate the number of crew onboard.)
  • Every gulet features an open sundeck for sun-seekers, and shaded areas for those who prefer to avoid the sun.
  • Gulet cabins are smaller than hotel rooms, but that rarely poses a problem for guests. After all, you'll spend most of your vacation time on deck, in the water, or exploring your destination – and very little time indoors.
  • There are always separate sleeping quarters on gulets, but many travellers enjoy sleeping outdoors – listening to the quiet lapping of the water (a sound called susesi in Turkish) and watching stars in the dark night sky. (Whether indoors or out, some claim the best sleep of their lives is on a boat - due to the gentle rocking of the waves.)
  • Boat galleys (kitchens) are incredibly tiny compared to restaurant kitchens – but the gulet's cook is master of the small space and responsible for preparing all meals, so there's no need to worry about how it all works.

All Turkish gulets feature private cabins and bathrooms, combined with plenty of shared living space on deck for meals, sunbathing and otherwise relaxing. But that's where the similarities end. Customized features include anything from basic air-conditioning to surround-sound theatres and Jacuzzi hot tubs. Whatever amenities you need, there's a gulet to suit your needs.

The Evolution of Gulets

As recently as the early 1970s, people who wanted to explore the splendour of the Turquoise coast by boat had to have access to a private yacht, or sail aboard a fishing or sponge boat. It was an "either / or" situation – you could cruise in the absolute comfort of the rich and famous (provided you yourself were rich and famous, or were friendly with someone who was), or you could rough it on a working boat with few creature comforts. There were no options in between.

Fortunately, as more and more people discovered the joys of leisurely sailing Turkey's picturesque coastline, savvy ship builders in the Bodrum area modified their working boat designs to better suit the needs of travellers from all walks of life. And thus evolved the modern Turkish gulet.

Gulet Construction & Maintenance

Turkish gulets are now constructed in numerous shipyards along the southwest coast.

Master craftsmen employ teak, mahogany, oak and other hardwoods in the construction of these sturdy wooden yachts. Pine is sometimes used too, as it is a less expensive option, but the softer wood does not last as long as its hardwood counterparts.

The construction process - which has been used since the 1800s – is called "plank on frame" and is similar for all gulets – whether fancy or plain. It can take more than a year to build a single gulet!

  • First the gulet's frame is built to provide the foundation for the rest of construction.
  • Then, starting from the keel (the "backbone of the boat"), solid timber planks are fastened to the sides of the boat, forming the hull. These planks are approximately 4cm thick, giving the hull its incredible strength and durability.
  • Once the hull planking is complete, cotton or oakum caulking is methodically pounded into every crack between the boards. Caulking a solid wood boat is quite an art, and people who specialize in it are kept busy each year when boats return to the shipyard for annual maintenance.
  • After caulking, several coats of water-proof plaster are applied to the underwater portion of the hull. And, after sanding, the boat is painted or varnished before being launched into the sea.
  • The masts, engine(s), electrical and plumbing systems, water and fuel tanks, air conditioning system, etc. are incorporated into the boat as it is built.
  • The deck and interior structure (cabins, bathrooms, galley, salon, seating areas, etc.) are left to the end of the construction process, and are built once everything else is in place.

When a wood boat is first launched (or re-launched after lengthy time in the shipyard), it is not uncommon for it to take on some water (i.e., leak). Assuming the caulking and plastering have been done correctly, the leaking stops within a few days as the dry planks absorb water and swell tightly together.

Gulets are exceptionally safe boats, but regular maintenance is required to ensure their on-going seaworthiness. Each year, the hull must be carefully inspected for leaks. Damaged timbers must be removed and replaced. Barnacles must be scraped off (the parasites bore into the wood, potentially damaging the integrity of the hull). And caulking, plaster, and paint must be re-applied as necessary.

A well-built, well-maintained Turkish gulet can last for decades. But even a few years of neglect will lead to a wooden boat's speedy demise.

Boat Safety

Commercial gulets in Turkey undergo annual inspection by the Harbour Master, including verification and testing of their navigational and safety equipment - including fire and smoke detectors, life jackets, life rings, life rafts, fire extinguishers and other fire fighting equipment, and safety flares.

Fire is the biggest threat to these highly varnished, wood vessels – so smoking is never permitted inside the boat. Some gulets allow smoking on deck, but guests are cautioned to be particularly careful when doing so. The gulet's crew will advise you of all safety rules and protocols before departing on a cruise.

Sailing on a Turkish Gulet

Gulets are classified as motor-sailers because they are powered by one or more engines, which can be supplemented with sails. In actual fact, they are not very efficient sailboats because of their massive size. But, if you're not in a hurry to get to your destination, it is an incredibly peaceful experience to bob along the sea powered solely by the wind.

One benefit enjoyed by gulets with sails is the ability to stabilize in rough water. With the sails raised, the vessel is less prone to chiming (rocking back and forth) when waves hit the hull from the side. To ensure the most comfortable cruise holiday, nervous sailors, or those prone to " mal de mer " should confirm whether their boat has working sails before booking. (Surprisingly, not all gulets are equipped with sails. And, even more surprisingly, not all gulet captains and crew are knowledgeable about sailing!)

Blue Cruises

From their humble beginnings in Bodrum, these purpose-built leisure boats have slowly permeated into the rest of the Mediterranean, and are now popular with holiday makers in Greece, Italy, Montenegro and Croatia. Often referred to as " Blue Cruises ", gulet holidays combine all the elements of a seaside resort getaway with the chance to travel and explore a variety of beautiful locations along the coast. We can't imagine a nicer way to vacation. Can you?

Sailing in Turkey: A Guide to a Gulet Cruise Along the Turquoise Coast

Sailing in Turkey along it’s Turquoise Coast is a magical way to spend a holiday in this beautiful country.

Stretching from the bustling port of Fethiye, to the resort town of Antalya, this coastline has been dubbed the Turquoise Coast for its twinkly blue warm seas. Backed by mountain ranges for almost its entire length, their slopes drop precipitously down to quaint fishing villages and the coastal highway which twists and turns with the coast. Lush pine forest, sandy beaches and sheer cliffs add drama, and the hundreds of tiny secluded coves and bays are tucked away, only accessible by water.

The most popular way to explore the Turquoise coast is by sailing, and the traditional wooden gulet cruise boat is a fantastic and authentic way to do this.

If you’re looking to spend long, lazy days onboard a typical Turkish boat, with glorious weather to boot, then a sailing trip in Turkey is for you. I recently spent three nights on board a gulet, sailing from Fethiye to Olympus, near Antalya with Alaturka Cruises enjoying a sailing trip along the Turquoise coast, on the route often referred to as the ‘blue cruise’. I tucked into delicious fresh seafood, explored ancient ruins, enjoyed drinks in lively fishing ports and jumped into the warm, calm seas for three days, and it was just brilliant. So here’s my guide to the Turquoise Coast, including how to choose a company to sail in Turkey with and what to do in each port of call. Enjoy reading and have fun planning your own sailing trip to Turkey!

Sailing in Turkey – Essential Things To Know

sailing in turkey

How to get to the Turquoise Coast

Depending on which direction you want to sail in, you need to fly to Fethiye or Antalya. Turkish Airlines and Pegasus both fly domestically from Istanbul and several other Turkish destinations to these seaside ports. You can also reach these towns by bus or train, which you can read more about in my guide to using public transport in Turkey.

From the UK or other European destinations, in the summer months (April to October), many airlines fly to Fethiye or Antalya and you should be able to catch a good deal.

When is the best time to go sailing in Turkey

For prime weather conditions, the peak summer season from May to September is best. In these months, the crowds do swell but the weather is best and you can almost guarantee long, sunny, hoy days – perfect for sailing trips in Turkey!

How to choose a company for a Turkey sailing trip

It might seem a little overwhelming as so many companies offer gulet cruises in Turkey. For two day or longer trips, I would definitely recommend Alaturka Cruises . I found them online in advance of my visit. Not only did they have excellent reviews online, but their email support beforehand was brilliant. The price was great value and the dates worked perfectly for my two week Turkey itinerary .

The gulet boat that we sailed the Turquoise Coast on was really well-maintained and well-sized for the number of passengers on board. It was so hot during our sailing trip in late August that they recommended we slept out under the stars on deck. We slept on these comfy sun-loungers and it was amazing sleeping with a warm breeze. The crew with Alaturka were fantastic. They were really attentive and fun, but not overbearing at all. We had a crew of three Turkish guys who took such great care of us and gave us great tips and suggestions. I joined the gulet cruise as a solo female traveller and didn’t feel uncomfortable once.

The other passengers were from all over the world – including a family from Saudi Arabia, a couple from South Africa and the US, a few other Brits and Americans. Everyone got on so well and the atmosphere was brilliant. With Alaturka, you could also rent your own private gulet cruise boat or yacht with crew if you had your own big group.

What to pack for a sailing holiday

Depending on the company you go with, it’s unlikely you’d need to bring any bedding or towels. However, you will need lots of suntan lotion, swimwear and hats. The sun can be very strong and there may only be a certain amount of shade onboard. The gulet boats normally have quite a few inflatables and they’re nearly always full board.

Every sailing company will have its own policy for alcohol on board. Our gulet cruise with Alaturka offered a self-service bar with an honesty tab, therefore we didn’t need to bring our own alcohol on board.

I would recommend one or two evening outfits for the nights you dock in or near a port for the option to go out in the evening.

sunset on the turquoise coast

Where to stay before or after the sailing trip

The main sailing routes are Fethiye to Olympus, or the other way round.

Fethiye offers many accommodation options. One of the best luxury hotels is the Club Tuana, you can check rates here .

Otherwise you can find hundreds of other options covering all price ranges on Booking.com here .

In Olympus, there is the very unusual offering of treehouses in this amazing valley town.

Some of the best options include:

  • Turkmen Treehouses
  • Kadir’s Treetop Houses
  • Olympus Deep Green Bungalows

Towns to visit along the Turquoise Coast, Turkey

Although it was the starting point to my gulet cruise in Turkey, Fethiye was possibly my least favourite town along the coastline. The town has experienced some mass overdevelopment in the past few decades and I imagine much of its charm has been lost.

I don’t know why, but before I arrived, it seemed to think Fethiye was going to be a quaint village so I was even more disappointed. That being said, it is the starting point for many sailing trips in Turkey so you don’t necessarily need to spend too long there. Its harbour is pretty beautiful but I didn’t particularly like the surrounding streets and restaurant areas.

Some of the key attractions in and around Fethiye include the ancient city of Kadyanda and the abandoned ancient Greek village of Kaya Köyü.

sunset on the Turquoise coast

Butterfly Valley

The first stop for many boats departing from Fethiye is the famed Butterfly Valley. This beautiful secluded cove is only reached by boat.

Its important to know that this beach isn’t sand, but instead, lots of tiny sharp rocks – really painful.

The beach sits at the entrance to a vast canyon, where there is also a cool off-the-radar back-to-basics campsite and a low-key bar and restaurants offering a cool hippy chilled vibe.

It’s called Butterfly Valley as it’s home to a butterfly farm, were there’s a huge diverse range of butterflies. August (when I visited) was not the season to see the butterflies, but the ones I did see were very colourful.

Butterfly valley, Turkey

Ölüdeniz is one of the most famous beaches in Europe. This stunning beach is regularly voted as one of the most beautiful, so I was really excited to dock here.

It really is a beautiful stretch, but as with many gorgeous beaches around the world, it certainly draws crowds and is pretty touristy.

One of the most popular activities to do in Ölüdeniz, and even in Turkey is paragliding. You can arrange this through your gulet cruise organisers, when you arrive in Ölüdeniz or in advance through GetYourguide. Book your paragliding jump here!

No matter which company you pick to go paragliding with, the experience is the same.

You depart from the centre of Ölüdeniz in a minibus with all of the paragliding kits and crew on board.

It’s one very long and perilous drive to the top of Babadag Mountain. I wondered a few times if the van was genuinely road-worthy enough, but we made it.

Ölüdeniz is one of the highest commercial locations in the world where you can paraglide. Together with the breathtaking views and consistently good weather, it is also one of the best places in the world to paraglide.

Once you reach the top, it takes no more than five minutes to jump into the gear and attach the parachute. You run down a short runway with your paragliding guide before, bam, you’re in the air.

We flew straight through the clouds, which was much like a warmer shower, before swerving sharply and emerging into the most spectacular view.

I was really impressed with my guide who I felt really wanted to make it an epic experience for me. He was very keen on making sure we tons of awesome photos and videos, and he really worked the ropes to create a stomach twisting experience. It was amazing!

Aside from paragliding, Ölüdeniz is also the starting point for the Lycian Trail, one of Turkey’s most iconic hiking routes.

In Ölüdeniz, there are also some great bars and cafes to enjoy some time in if you don’t feel like paragliding.

Paragliding in Olu Deniz

The beautiful harbour town of Kaş has a lot to offer and is a great town to visit along the Turquoise Coast. Its charming laneways are lined with interesting boutique stores, cute cafes, lively beach bars and metres of tumbling bougainvillea.

This area is also known for fantastic diving and many dive operators run trips straight from Kaş. Our boat trip with Alaturka permitted enough time to spend the afternoon diving, which was great.

We enjoyed fantastic cocktails at Mumi Cafe Beach. This beach bar had had an awesome atmosphere during the day, and I would highly recommend.

On the day we were in Kaş, it so happened to be Victory Day in Turkey. This meant that the evening was absolutely pumping. Hundreds of Turks had travelled from all over the country to revel in the town. It was an amazing experience as a tourist.

Exploring Kas in Turkey

The next stop along the coast is Kekova, and the magnificent Sunken City here – a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Kekova is home to incredible underwater ruins that were submerged following an earthquake. This area was once a prominent town in the Byzantine and Lycian eras, but is now completely deserted, except for a handful of goats.

This is a no walk, no diving zone. But many boats do sail past each day slowly to take in the incredible site. You can see rooms, staircases and doorways above the sea level, as well as make out pathways and more rooms under the water level. Luckily the water is completely translucent, and is one of the most unusual sites I have ever seen.

Underwater ruins

Kaleköy and Simena Castle

Along the Turquoise Coast, this tiny, traditional village was one of my favourite spots. Visiting this tiny hillside hamlet was like a step back in time. The ancient Simena Castle is located at the top of the village and is well worth a visit. It takes around 10 minutes of hiking through the tiny village and up into the hill. At the top, you’ll find the old fortress, once a notable Lycian settlement. Here you will find an incredible panoramic vista over the Gokkaya bay. The heat can be particularly intense here and despite it being quite a short hike, we ran out of water.

The tiny laneways of the village are lined with local women (and children) selling their homemade souvenirs. They were not pushy at all and I bought several lovely bracelets here.

Simena castle on Turkey's Turquoise Coast

Lastly, the final spot along the Turquoise Coast to visit (or first if you’re doing this route in reverse) is the hippie town of Olympos.

An odd mix of travellers descend on this incredibly beautiful town, nestled in a canyon and surrounded by fragrant forest. It has a tucked away beach and an atmosphere that’s really quite unique. Visitors stay in ‘treehouses’, and the bars are leafy, basic and so, so chilled. If have the time, this is a great place to finish the trip and spend a few extra nights.

sailing in Turkey

So that concludes my guide to sailing in Turkey and exploring the Turquoise Coast by traditional gulet boat. I hope this guide is useful. both for choosing a tour company and find out about the ports. As mentioned, this route is often referred to as ‘the blue cruise’.

If you’re considering a longer trip, you might find my  two-week Turkey itinerary  here useful. I’ve also written guides to  Bodrum ,   Pamukkale ,  Ephesus , Istanbul  and  Cappadocia  here.

Have you sailed along Turkey’s Turquoise Coast? I’d love to hear if so. Drop a comment below, and if you’ve enjoyed this post, feel free to share using the below links!

Picturesque coasts like those make it hard to leave the ship and explore. I could stare at that all day. But thankfully you pointed out numerous amazing things to do. I would thoroughly enjoy the paragliding. There is something about going through clouds that gives you an incredible feeling.

Turkey has always been one of the best countries I have visited until now, and can visit it many more times :), your pictures are just so amazing which makes me pack my bag and go to Turkey right away 🙂

Those are some amazing towns – Kas specially. It reminds me of a smaller town in Nepal called Bandipur with its cobbled pathways and bougainvillea. The water here is terrific, I definitely think that it is the best way to explore this coastline. Glad you shared your views on the same.

What is Gulet

The word ‘gouëlette’, stems from the word ‘gouelan’ with the meaning of Breton Seagull. The very first meaning of the word ‘gulet’ is actually very interesting since it is in a big relation with the blue seas and the beautiful nature. Apart from the etymology, the gulet has been a boat type appropriate for various activities such as fishing and transportation. Besides, sponge-makers were using the gulet thanks to its functionality. Now that we have come to an end with the answer to the question ‘ what is gullet ?!

How Gullets Gained Popularity

After answering the question ‘ what is gulet ?’, lets continue with the history of it. The gulet started to serve for mercantile purposes at the very beginning. However, the blue voyage gained popularity among the country’s intellectuals and later in the world; thanks to the development and significant increase in the shipyard and ship production in the 1970s. With the increase in production, the interest in gullets has been enhanced as well since it was not only affordable why rich people anymore. The blue cruise was catering for everyone and at the end of the 1980s, various entertaining azure blue sea activities were made on gullets. Now that we have got knowledge about the history of gullets,

what is Gulet ?

Different from the past designs that gullets had, their construction has been adjusted to the modern devices, motors, and equipment. Diesel engines are attached yet the wooden appearance is kept so that the authentic signature of a gulet is never lost. Preserving its traditional wooden style, gullets serve with various features and facilities which is the reason why it is so much preferred.

What is Gulet and its types?

There are three gulet types that differ in terms of their designs and functions. However, all keep the traditional wooden design. The three gulet types are stated below as followed:

Gulet Type #1 – Watermelon Rump

With its durability and stability ensuring design, the most popular gulet type has got the name ‘watermelon pump’ from the fact that it has an oval shape with a round and flat stern. This gulet type is very comfortable and offers advanced safety against bad weather conditions. Due to its safety guarantee, most of the largest gulets are designed with a watermelon rump design.

Gulet Type #2 – Mirror Stern

If you are looking for a large internal space in a gulet, you will make the right choice by choosing the mirror stern gulet type. Compared to the size of the gulet, the internal volume of the gulet is huge. Thanks to its angular and flat design, the mirror stern is suitable for cabin charters and long-term sailing holidays. However, these boats are very slow and not as mechanical as the other types. Yet, they are perfect to visit bays and islands.

What is Gulet

Gulet Type #3 – Tirhandil

Last but not least, this type of gulet has survived through history and is known as the oldest gulet type. With their small but functional design, they are durable and modern sailboat like.  If you are looking for a small boat with modest spaces, you can get a Tirhandil and entertain the hot sun with the turquoise blue sea!

A ketch gulet is a specific type of gulet that is distinguished by its sail configuration. The term “ketch” refers to the number and arrangement of masts and sails on the vessel. A ketch gulet typically has two masts: a mainmast located towards the center of the vessel and a shorter mizzen mast situated aft, closer to the stern.

The distinguishing feature of a ketch gulet is the presence of a mizzen mast, which sets it apart from other gulets that may have only a single mast or multiple masts of different configurations. The mizzen mast on a ketch gulet is typically smaller and positioned behind the mainmast.

The sail setup on a ketch gulet generally includes triangular or quadrilateral sails. The mainmast carries the main sail, while the mizzen mast supports the mizzen sail. The sail area of the main sail is typically larger than that of the mizzen sail.

The presence of the mizzen mast on a ketch gulet offers several advantages. It allows for more flexible sail handling and control, as the mizzen sail can be used to balance the vessel and provide additional propulsion options. The mizzen sail can be utilized to improve stability, especially in challenging wind conditions or when maneuvering.

Ketch gulets are known for their elegant appearance and balanced sail performance. The combination of the mainmast and mizzen mast allows for efficient sailing and comfortable cruising experiences. Additionally, ketch gulets often provide ample deck space and comfortable accommodations, making them popular choices for those seeking a classic sailing experience with modern comfort.

When considering a yacht charter or gulet rental, if you specifically prefer the sail configuration of a ketch gulet, it’s advisable to communicate your preferences to the charter company or broker. They can provide information on the availability of ketch gulets in their fleet and help you find the right vessel that suits your desires for a memorable sailing adventure.

A tirhandil gulet is a specific type of gulet that has its origins in Turkey. It is characterized by its unique and traditional design, which sets it apart from other types of gulets. Here’s some information about tirhandil gulets:

Design and Construction: Tirhandil gulets are typically smaller in size compared to other gulets. They are characterized by a distinctive pointed bow and stern, which gives them a sleek and elegant appearance. The hull of a tirhandil gulet is usually made of wood, with traditional craftsmanship techniques employed in its construction.

Sailing Performance: Tirhandil gulets are primarily designed for sailing, and their design allows for excellent maneuverability and performance under sail. They are known for their ability to handle various wind conditions, making them ideal for those seeking an authentic and exhilarating sailing experience.

Sails and Rigging: Tirhandil gulets usually feature a single mast with a triangular or quadrilateral sail configuration. They typically carry a mainsail and a headsail, which provide the necessary propulsion for sailing. The rigging is designed to ensure optimal sail control and efficiency.

Traditional Charm: Tirhandil gulets embody the traditional Turkish maritime heritage and reflect the country’s rich seafaring culture. They offer a glimpse into the historical and traditional aspects of Turkish boatbuilding and are often appreciated by those seeking an authentic and unique sailing experience.

Intimate and Cozy Atmosphere: Due to their smaller size, tirhandil gulets generally accommodate fewer guests compared to larger gulets. This creates a more intimate and cozy atmosphere on board, ideal for small groups or couples looking for a private and romantic sailing experience.

Comfort and Amenities: While tirhandil gulets may be smaller in size, they still provide comfortable and well-appointed accommodations for guests. They typically feature cabins with basic amenities, including sleeping quarters and limited facilities, while focusing more on the sailing experience and immersion in the natural surroundings.

Experienced Crew: Like other gulets, tirhandil gulets are typically operated by a professional crew that includes a captain and deckhands. The crew members are experienced in sailing and navigation and provide hospitality services to ensure a safe and enjoyable charter experience.

Tirhandil gulets offer a unique and authentic sailing experience, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the traditional maritime culture of Turkey. Their smaller size and sailing capabilities make them ideal for those seeking a more intimate and adventurous voyage along the Turkish coastline.

A gulet is a traditional wooden sailing vessel originating from the Eastern Mediterranean, particularly Turkey. These vessels have a rich history and are commonly used for leisure cruising and yacht charters in the region. Here is some detailed information about gulets:

Design and Construction: Gulets are typically constructed from wood, often using pine, mahogany, or teak. They feature a distinctive design with a broad beam and a rounded stern. Gulets come in various sizes, ranging from around 15 meters to over 35 meters in length, accommodating different group sizes.

Sailing and Power: Gulets traditionally have two or three masts with sails, allowing them to be propelled by wind power. However, many modern gulets are equipped with engines to ensure reliable power and provide flexibility for cruising in areas with varying wind conditions.

Spacious Decks and Comfort: Gulets are known for their spacious decks, providing ample room for relaxation, sunbathing, and socializing. They often feature a large aft deck with cushioned seating, dining tables, and a raised forward deck area known as the “forecastle” or “fo’c’sle.” Some gulets also have an additional deck level called the flybridge, offering panoramic views.

Cabins and Accommodation: Gulets typically have multiple cabins that serve as accommodation for guests. The cabins can vary in size and layout, ranging from cozy twin or double cabins to spacious master suites. Many cabins have en-suite bathrooms with showers, air conditioning, and other amenities to ensure guest comfort.

Facilities and Amenities: Gulets are designed to provide a comfortable and enjoyable cruising experience. They are equipped with various amenities, which may include indoor and outdoor dining areas, a saloon or lounge with entertainment systems, fully equipped kitchens, and water sports equipment such as kayaks, paddleboards, and snorkeling gear.

Professional Crew: A crew is an integral part of a gulet charter. Depending on the size of the gulet, the crew typically includes a captain, chef, deckhands, and sometimes additional crew members. The crew is responsible for navigating the vessel, preparing meals, maintaining the yacht, and providing hospitality services to ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience for guests.

Charter Experiences: Gulets offer a unique and relaxed way to explore coastal regions and islands. They are popular for private charters, family vacations, group getaways, and special celebrations. With their comfortable accommodations, onboard amenities, and the ability to access remote bays and hidden coves, gulets provide an opportunity to experience a combination of leisurely sailing, water activities, and cultural exploration.

Gulet Charters in Turkey: Turkey is renowned for gulet charters, as it offers a vast and picturesque coastline to explore. The Turkish Riviera, also known as the Turquoise Coast, is a particularly popular cruising area for gulets, with destinations like Bodrum, Marmaris, Fethiye, and Kas offering stunning landscapes, historical sites, and crystal-clear waters.

Gulets have gained popularity worldwide due to their unique charm, comfort, and the opportunity to experience a blend of traditional sailing and modern luxury. Whether it’s a relaxing vacation or an adventurous exploration of coastal beauty, gulet charters offer a memorable and enchanting yachting experience.

What is Gulet and How to Charter One

Gulet is a traditional wooden motor-sailing vessel meant for comfortable cruising. The history of gulets is somewhat veiled in secrecy. It remains uncertain how gulets got their name - whether it comes from the Italian word "guletta" or the French word "goullette". This schooner type of vessel is used as a sweeping net, trawl net or sponging vessel in Turkey in the Aegean and Mediterranean.

Gulets we know today are known as the Bodrum type of schooners. They date back to the beginning of the 1970s when they were created as a result of the need to carry tourists who began visiting the Aegean region and especially Bodrum and Marmaris at the end of the 1960s, to nearby bays. These gulets had chambers and seating on the back of the deck as opposed to gulets used in fishing or sponging till those years.

Although charter gulets do sail when the winds allow, they are most of the time propelled by engine power . They are configured as motorsailers, with diesel engines to provide primary power, while sails offer additional strength.

Gulets have a raised bow, a broad, flat stern, the main foremast and a secondary mast aft. Their broad beam provides plenty of deck space and spacious cabins below decks.

Gulet Charter

Gulet Charter Types and Services

Gulets come in many sizes , ranging from small 15-meter-long craft to luxurious 33-meter air-conditioned vessels with every convenience and luxury imaginable. Charter gulets offer hotel-like accommodation in comfortable air-conditioned cabins with bathrooms and enough storage for all your luggage. Charter gulets also have plenty of communal space - a large salon with a bar, lots of deck space for sunbathing and other activities, as well as an outside dining and lounge area at the stern. Gulet's stern deck is broad with a wide cushioned bench perfect for lounging , and a large table for games, drinks and meals. The salon is spacious and high enough for somewhat taller guests, with enough table space to seat all travellers for meals, meetings or evening entertainment.

Charter gulets have an experienced and professional crew that comprises a captain, sailors, and a chef. Their job is to take care of your safety and provide you with comfort during your cruise, while the chef will prepare you fresh meals with high-quality local ingredients.

There are two gulet charter types - a private gulet charter and a cabin charter.

A private gulet charter offers you ultimate comfort and privacy , as well as high flexibility regarding the menu, itinerary, and provisioning. A charter gulet's crew is wholly dedicated to you and your party.

A cabin charter is a more economical and more convenient alternative to chartering the entire boat since you do not have to have company to charter a cabin . This is a pleasurable way of vacationing that allows you to meet different people . However, you do not have complete freedom since the itineraries and ports of embarkation and disembarkation are fixed and cannot be altered.

B&B Gulet is ideal to charter for you and your partner. If you think the whole sailboat would be too big for you but you still want to enjoy that unique feeling only sailing can bring, opt for Bed & Breakfast Gulet . You get a bedroom and breakfast. Hence the name. We can promise that on a gulet, it's never boring. You will meet new people and it is always dynamic. That's the list of B&B Gulets.

Gulet Sunbathing Area

The all-inclusive gulet charter is a whole different story. You will also be provided with a bed but the difference between a B&B Gulet charter and an All Inclusive is that an All Inclusive gulet charter gives you the full package for the biggest enjoyment. You wouldn't have to worry about a thing. All meals are being prepared for you and the same goes for the drinks too. Of course, one always can choose their package which can be tailored to your specific taste . For example, you can drink only soft drinks without alcoholic beverages, or you can decide to skip dinner and eat in a restaurant. The choice is yours to make and with an all-inclusive gulet charter, you have many of them.

Gulet Charter Holidays

By chartering a gulet , you get a different kind of sailing holiday. It is a very comfortable and carefree cruise on a boat that offers quality accommodation, as well as privacy and the best service possible . Another benefit of a charter gulet is the possibility to make the itinerary according to your wishes.

Gulet Food Friends Eating

Gulet charters vary in size, boat quality, service, and equipment. The higher the price, the more you get for your money. Charter gulets usually have three to eight cabins providing accommodation for up to sixteen guests. A typical gulet charter agreement includes the gulet , crew , insurance , and fuel for 4-5 hours of sailing per day without port taxes and fees. Half board is in many cases included in the price.

Typical Day on a Gulet Charter

A typical day on a gulet ship is not as different from a day on board a sailboat . Except there is less sailing done. The first day on board a gulet looks like this.

Upon the arrival of the gulet, you are assisted into your cabin. Once you settle, there will be a welcome meeting held on deck. This meeting will also include the briefing regarding the route, as well as the security briefing about life on board.

The cruise starts right after the meeting, or the following day, depending on the weather conditions and guests’ arrival times. The usual duration of cruising is 3 to 4 hours per day . Charter gulets usually visit a bay or two every day. The best part of the day is spent sunbathing , swimming in some lovely bay, using the boat's fishing equipment, water-skiing, snorkelling or something else, depending on what the gulet is equipped with. You can also spend time reading or playing games. If you moor in a port, you can spend the day sightseeing and exploring the shore around the port. Dining is normally outdoors, on the aft deck, in a port or anchored in some secluded bay, depending on the guests’ wishes.

Evenings are spent moored in a port or anchored outside the harbour, depending on the availability of places in the port and the preferences of the guests. Guests can also spend the evening outside the charter gulet, exploring the port town, having dinner in a restaurant or enjoying the local nightlife.

What is a Gulet? What is it like to charter one?

What is a Gulet? and what is it like to charter one?

A Gulet is a classic wooden motor sailing yacht usually built-in Bodrum or Marmaris on the southwestern coast of Turkey. They range in size from a small 15m to a 35m air-conditioned luxury yacht with every conceivable convenience. A Gulet charter is a private holiday, guests put together their own groups and the trip is fully crewed, meaning included in the price is a professional skipper, chef and deckhand or deckhands depending on the size.  While some may believe chartering a private gullet can be expensive, this is not always the case, especially as the sizes increase and the number of guests goes up. Unlike shared Gulet cruises or ‘Blue water cruises’ private Gulet charters come with a couple of different catering options, half board and full board the most common with all-inclusive drinks packages also available. Along with quintessential Turkish and Greek cuisine fresh fish is a favourite with Gulet chefs, it is always worth asking the deckhands if there is the possibility of doing some fishing whilst onboard and catching your own lunch!

As a result of their size, Gulet’s typically comes with a tender (small motorboat or RIB ) with a powerful motor on the back which can be used to explore nearby beaches, take guests into town for lunch or dinner or explore hidden coves and caves. It’s common for a Gulet charter to include water sport activities to be used with this such as water-skiing and wakeboarding, this may be an extra with smaller boats.

If you are looking for a more tranquil holiday then Gulet is the perfect platform to unwind and relax, the vast deck spaces offer multiple areas for a family or group of friends to spend their days without the worry that you’ll be vying for prime sunbathing spots. The aft dining areas of these classic yachts are broad, flat and beautifully presented, dining on them is unlike anything else in yachting. The forward sunbathing areas can be 15m long some even have jacuzzi’s, many have built-in tables provide an ideal location to take in the spectacular Mediterranean sunsets over a glass (or bottle) of your favourite rose.

gulet boot

As well as plenty of deck space the broad beam offered by Gulets provides plenty of room for spacious cabins below. Cabin configurations vary widely, some Gulets can accommodate up to 30 guests across single, double and sometimes quad rooms, 8 – 14 guests charters are more common in standard double a twin setups. They also have a large communal saloon area inside often with a bar and internal dining area that can be used for games and evening entertainment. Only about 50% of Gulets are rigged to sail nowadays, those that do will do so only in favourable conditions, due to their size there is minimal rolling (healing over) providing a very gentle yet enjoyable experience for those not used to life under sail. Quiet diesel engines provide most of the propulsion and journeys are carried out in the early hours to maximise time guests can enjoy swimming and exploring at anchor locations.

Having spent one of my memorable day aboard a Turkish Gulet for a friend’s birthday I can honestly say I’d jump at the chance to spend a week exploring the Turkish, Greek or Italian coastlines on-board one of these characterful vessels. It’s an experience frequent and first-time charterers alike will find totally unique.

Turkish Gulet Cruise Yachts

Last Updated on June 11, 2022

Today, Turkey's wooden gulets are configured mostly as motor-sailers, with powerful diesel engines to provide primary power and sails to provide either additional power or primary power in the case of strong winds. This means, when the wind blows, you can sail silently and go wherever you want with reliable motor power.

Turkish gulets come in many sizes, from small 15-meter (50-foot)-long craft with the necessary equipment to large, luxurious  33-meter  (108-foot) air-conditioned vessels with every convenience and luxury.

What is a Gulet?

G ulet, derived from the French golette (or Schooner), is a traditional Turkish broad-beamed wooden coastal sailing vessel with a raised bow, a broad, flat stern, main foremast, and a secondary mast aft.

Gulets are particularly good as pleasure sailing vessels because of their broadbeam, which creates expansive deck space.

A  gulet  may have from 3 to 12 two-person  cabins  (for 6 to 24 people), but 5- and 6-cabin vessels capable of sleeping 10 to 12 voyagers are most common. (The 2- or 3-person crew usually  sleeps in a lazarette at the bow.)

Many gulet cabins have private  heads  (toilets) and  sinks , some even have private  fresh-water showers , though communal showers are more common (if the vessel has a shower).

The  stern deck  of a gulet is broad, fitted with a low, wide  cushioned bench  all around which is perfect for lounging, reading, relaxing or napping. The stern deck area, shaded by an awning if the sun is hot, is large enough for a  small table for games, drinks or simple meals. For sunbathing, the foredeck is the place.

A gulet's  main cabin  is fairly spacious, high enough for the tallest voyager to stand erect, with provisions for tables to seat all the voyagers for meals, meetings or evening entertainment.

Fittings and furnishings range from pine and stainless steel to rich mahogany and burnished brass.

"Gulet in perfect condition. Crew 100% efficient. Cook and all meals 100%. Attention to detail 100%. We were a group of 8 adults and could not find one complaint after 7 days on the wonderful Kaya Guneri 11. Looking forward to returning for another adventure along the Turkish coastline." Itineraries

Itineraries   range based on the personal preference of the tourist and the options offered by the agency providing the gulet experience.

Typical yacht  charter agreements  in Turkey include the yacht, crew, insurance, fuel for four hours' motoring per day (on average), standard port taxes and fees. Some  meals , soft drinks, water and local (that is, Turkish domestic) alcoholic drinks ( beer ,  wine ,  raki , brandy, gin, etc.) are included in some charter agreements, or may be ordered by the voyagers and paid for separately.

Crew  tips/gratuities  of 5% to 10% of the charter fee are traditionally given to the captain at the end of the voyage, to be shared among the crew.

Gulet Charter

  • What is a Gulet

What is a Gulet

What is a Gulet. The gulet is a practical and traditional vessel that exudes a relaxing atmosphere that epitomises the Blue Cruise. Its rounded stern, low-to-the-water profile, and spacious hull are well-known and were originally used by fishermen and sponge divers to transport their products. Gulets have come a long way since they were first used as traditional fishing and cargo ships, and now feature a widened deck and broad beam. Nowadays, gulets are primarily linked with chartering, and a variety of distinct designs have arisen, all of which are encompassed by the general category of the wooden gulet.

The classic Gulet possesses a rounded stern, however, due to the design’s restricted capacity to accommodate cabins, the “Ayna Kic” (flat-backed) Gulet style has become progressively favoured as a charter boat. Every gulet is fashioned by hand in Turkey, and production takes almost a year. These boats, measuring between 18 and 27 metres in length and 5-7 metres in width, are predominantly constructed in Bodrum , Bozburun , Marmaris , Fethiye and Istanbul shipyards and along the Black Sea coastline. Each boat boasts a fully operational rigging system and engines.

With 4-10 private wooden cabins available, these gulet cabins can accommodate up to 20 individuals with their own private bathroom facilities. The popularity of these cabins can be attributed to their uniform size amongst vessels and the option for a double berth or a single upper and double lower berth within Blue Cruise in Turkey . Each cabin is equipped with a wardrobe for hanging clothes and several drawers, as well as storage space for bags and bulky items. Additionally, all cabins come complete with en suite bathrooms, fitted with a pull-out shower hose that is attached to the sink. You can expect to find bath and hand towels, bed linen, and a blanket provided for your comfort during your stay. All cabins are powered by 12-volt electricity, with the electricity on most Gulets running on 12V/24V. Please keep this in mind if you wish to bring any battery-operated or electric equipment such as shavers, videos, or portable PCs. While guests are welcome to bring their own hairdryer, the optimal way to dry hair in this area is by natural means – under the sun!

Electricity in the ports is supplied at 220 volts.

The Gulet’s living quarters comprise an indoor lounge (some vessels possess an enclosed aft area) and an aft deck where guests can dine and recline under the shade of a sun awning. Guests can also make use of the front deck of the Blue Cruise in Turkey Gulet, which features numerous sun loungers that can be sheltered by a canopy when the yacht is at a standstill.

All yachts feature a bar where guests can purchase alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages at modest prices, a lounge and dining area, a music system, a sun deck, and sun loungers.

The aft deck of the Gulet serves as the dining and lounge area where guests can relish breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals. These freshly prepared dishes include grilled meats, fish, salads, fruits, and Turkish delicacies. Notably, all meals are incredibly nutritious and delectable. An evening meal on the aft deck, under the starry sky and accompanied by the soothing sounds of water lapping at the hull, is often the highlight of the day, providing a leisurely experience.

Gulets offer great opportunities for water sports, equipped with windsurfers, fishing gear, snorkeling equipment and canoes for your enjoyment. If snorkeling is one of your preferred activities, we recommend bringing your own gear to ensure a perfect fit. This will allow you to explore the depths at your leisure during your Blue Cruise in Turkey aboard a Gulet.

All yachts come with a tender that has either oars or an outboard engine. Yachts that provide the option of waterskiing boast a powerful outboard engine, while others are outfitted with outboards designed only for returning to shore.

All yachts possess the necessary safety equipment, including a VHF radio and stereo cassette player, as well as a cassette collection. The majority of newly built vessels also include a mobile phone, television, video player, and CD player.

TURKEY GULET YACHT

A gulet is a classic wooden, motorized, and sailing boat that is perfect for long sea voyages and close-to-land cruises.

Traditional Turkish gulets are made-to-order boats that skilled artisans construct from wood. Because they provide a very comfortable cruising experience, gulets, often referred to as motor sailboats, are perfect for coastal excursions and lengthy sea cruises.

We are aware that the first gulet construction began in Turkey’s Bodrum region. However, production is also taking place in Bozburun, Marmaris, Fethiye, and Istanbul as a result of the expanding market and demand.

Types of Gulets

Gulet: The gulet is the most well-known traditional yacht design for Blue Cruise. The dining table and seating area are located at the back of the gulets.

There is typically a sofa and enough sun pillows out front for everyone. The entrance to the cabins is through this hall, which features a dining table according to the size of the gulet and an interior hall.

The yacht’s round stern causes the guest quarters to be in the front, while the aft side is typically used as the technical area. The ability to sail is marginally superior to that of Aynakic gulets.

The AFT parts of Aynakic gulets are not round, as they are in gulets, but rather are in a structure with raised corners, which is a key characteristic that sets them apart from ordinary gulets.

They typically use this space for the suite room, or what we would refer to as the “master cabin.” All other details are the same as for gulets, with the exception of this characteristic.

Tirhandil is the oldest local wooden boat type with a pointed stern and the best-suited wooden yacht for sailing. Today, the equipment has changed from sloop to lifeboat and from sail to sail; the majority of them are three-corner sails.

They do not construct them on particularly lengthy decks, often between 15 and 25 meters, like other kinds. The same standards apply to their cabins. If you like sailing, this is the best option.

Accommodation on Gulets

Traditional Turkish gulets have evolved in appearance over time. A modern gulet today resembles a high-end floating hotel and can be anywhere between 15 and 55 meters (50 and 180 feet) in length. Gulet length and passenger capacity are not inversely related.

A 20-meter gulet, for instance, might contain three guest cabins or six. The cabins must be smaller in order to accommodate additional cabins of the same size. But in general, taller gulets make up vessels with six or more multi-cabs.

Every cabin on gulets of different shapes and sizes was created with the needs of the passenger in mind, including a bed, wardrobe, separate shower, and toilet.

However, extra comfort amenities like sofa sets, dressers, work desks, and jacuzzis are also available, depending on the size of the rooms and the level of luxury of the boat. There are separate cabins for personnel in the guest cabins.

Gulet Passenger Safety

On gulets, the welfare of the passengers comes first. As a result, each gulet contains numerous fuel and clean water tanks. Additionally, it features a complete set of navigation and safety equipment, including life jackets, fire extinguishers, GSM phones, and VHF radios.

All of these safety precautions and modern technologies prevent any potential emergency and enhance your seaside vacation.

Types of Gulet Charters

Private yacht charter: When you charter a gulet, the entire vessel—along with its crew—is yours for the duration of the rental period. Within the parameters outlined in your rental agreement, you are free to take any route during the rental term.

And you are not restricted to any set timetable; you can plan your vacation however you like. You can purchase our ready-made menu packages and avoid sticking to a typically restricted menu, just as you can shop for your rations.

Renting a private gulet is the perfect choice if you want to spend a luxurious vacation at sea with your family or enjoy the sea and entertainment with close friends.

For a trip you won’t forget and wish to repeat, choose from traditional, classic, luxury, or ultra-luxury yacht charter options to suit your needs and experience.

Cabin rentals : On a shared tour, one or more cabins may be rented. The schedule for the route, lunch times, and meal components remain the same.

The purpose of in-cabin trips, which they typically arrange on classic gulets, is to experience the spirit and joy of the Blue Cruise rather than taking a vacation on a luxury yacht. Let’s say you can’t organize enough groups to rent a private gulet or you go over your budget.

Then, a cabin rental could provide you with a relaxing blue-tour vacation. Renting a cabin will help you make the most of your vacation by allowing you to cruise in style, widen your circle of friends, and meet new acquaintances on the boat.

"Abbiamo noleggiato un dufour 41.5 e la barca si è comportata molto bene. Nonostante fosse del 2020 era però mal tenuta. La Marina di Zaton di fatto è un luogo abbandonato con il solo vantaggio di poter ritornare alla base ogni sera senza assistenza al porto. Solo un attento check-in da parte nostra ha permesso di risolvere alcuni problemi quali la mancanza di corrente sulla barca dettata dal fatto che i controlli sono approssimativi"

Amalfi coast sailing vacation on crewed yacht

Capri & Amalfi coast sailing trip - 0

DESCRIPTION

By the cabin charter on sailing catamaran is a great chance to explore true beauty of Amalfi Coast. This crewed catamaran has 6 comfortable cabins and can accommodate 12 guests. Professional crew of 2: skipper and cook will do their best to make this sailing trip an unforgettable vacation. The catamaran has 6 cabins with a queen size beds. All cabins are equipped with air conditioning, private bathroom with shower.

Procida

Check-in on board of sailing catamaran in Pozzuoli base at 06:00 pm. Short passage to Corricella bay in Procida famous for its village with tightly packed houses built on top of each other in a myriad of different colors. The village is known to be a cheerful place, and offers a breathtaking view, especially when the sun is shining on the colored houses.

Enjoy an aperitif, some snacks in local restaurant or explore the main village using just stairways and snaking passages to Terra Murata or Casale Vascello. Dinner on board and night at the anchor.

Ischia

After traditional breakfast on board, featuring "lingue al limone," we'll set sails to Ischia, the largest island in the bay of Naples. Our sailing trip will take us near Vivara, linked to Procida by a bridge, boasting a nature reserve teeming with rare flora, rabbits, and avian life. After an hour passage we will reach the enchanting Sant’Angelo bay and the picturesque Maronti beach. While the bay itself is a marvel, be sure not to overlook the charming village or the accessible Le Fumarole beach, reached via a quaint path from the heart of the village.

Around 4:00 pm, the catamaran will anchor in a bay near Ischia Ponte, merely 4 nautical miles from Sant’Angelo. Ischia Ponte is renowned for its medieval castle, the Castello Aragonese, commanding views of the bay below. An unforgettable evening unfolds with a dinner aboard the boat beneath the castle, followed by a leisurely stroll through the enticing shops of Ischia Ponte.

Capri

In the morning we will sail from Ischia to Capri. Explore the iconic Faraglioni rocks, venture into the captivating Blue Grotto, and witness the mesmerizing hues of the water as sunlight illuminates the caves. Take an tour around the island to visit the renowned Faro, and  stop at Marina Piccola to soak in the italian atmosphere.

We'll dock at the most famous marina to explore Capri village and its charming narrow streets adorned with shops, including La Piazzetta, Via Tragara, Via Camerelle, and more. This pier is a daily arrival point for celebrities from around the globe, stepping ashore with their mega yachts.

Positano

We will pass near impressive Faraglioni Rocks while chart a course towards the stunning Amalfi coast. Towering mountains, adorned with distinctive colors, command attention over the picturesque bays of Nerano, Positano, and Amalfi. Covering a distance of 8.5 nautical miles, you'll have the opportunity to plunge into the deep waters of Li Galli.

Li Galli comprises three remote and rocky islands—Gallo Lungo, Castelluccio, and Rotonda—situated just a short distance from the shores of Positano, reflecting their beauty in the crystal-clear sea that graces the pearl of the Amalfi coast. Legend says that these islands were once inhabited by mermaids whose enchanting voices lured sailors, causing them to lose control of their ships and collide with the rocks.

Following a brief sail to Positano, covering 4.5 nautical miles, we'll pause to absorb the unparalleled beauty of the landscape that has catapulted Positano and the Amalfi Coast to global fame.

Amalfi

Following breakfast, our sailing adventure will take us to Amalfi, passing through the enchanting landscapes of Praiano and Conca dei Marini. Along the way, we'll make a brief stop to explore the breathtaking Furore Fjord - an awe-inspiring chasm carved into the rock at the mouth of a steep valley that descends into the sea. This hidden gem features a small beach and a charming fishing village.

Spanning the fjord is a suspended bridge, elevated at 30 meters, serving as a pathway for the main coastal road. This location hosts a thrilling high diving championship in July. Just beyond Capo Conca, Amalfi unfolds—a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Italy's four historical republics. Brimming with history, it boasts an array of astonishing ancient buildings and museums. Notable landmarks include the Cathedral of St. Andrew in Piazza Duomo, the Basilica del Crocifisso, the Maritime Republic's ancient arsenal, and the paper museum—just a glimpse into the wonders awaiting exploration in Amalfi.

Sorrento

We recommend to take a bus excursion from Amalfi to Ravello. Located on a rocky outcrop 365 meters above sea level, Ravello stands at the heart of the Amalfi coast, providing breathtaking views of the entire Gulf of Salerno. Renowned for its irresistible allure and global fame, Ravello is a cherished destination on the Divine coast. Its perfect blend of art and music has earned its cultural recognition, designating it as a city of music. Explore enchanting landmarks such as Villa Ruffolo, Villa Cimbrone, Villa Rondinaia, and the renowned Oscar Niemeyer Auditorium.

In the afternoon we will set up sails to Sorrento. During this passage you we will view fantastic landscapes and will have a chance to swim in beautiful bays, such as Nerano bay or Marina di Puolo. The night at anchore in Sorrento bay, with the option to explore the village under the enchanting evening lights.

Pozzuoli

In the mooring you can take a last swim in Sorrento bay or explore the town. E arly afternoon, we sail back to Pozzuoli passing along Naples coast and admiring the city of Naples by the sea with its Castel dell’Ovo, Posillipo hill and Nisida island. Night in Pozzuoli Marina.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

aceite voyager 2003

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

aceite voyager 2003

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

aceite voyager 2003

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

aceite voyager 2003

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

aceite voyager 2003

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

aceite voyager 2003

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

aceite voyager 2003

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
