Is a stainless steel boat possible?

Discussion in ' Materials ' started by hansp77 , May 2, 2006 .

Just curious, as I am getting ready to try to weld up my own stainless pushpit the thought crossed my mind. Could one make a stainless steel hull? Or has anyone already done this? Aside from much higher cost, are there any fundamental reasons why this couldn't be done? The obvious idea I had to make this more affordable would be to use salvaged stainless, from things like big chemical storage tanks and what not. Hans.

"Stainless" means it doesn't rust in air. It will still corrode in (salt) water, I think. At least stainless bolts and screws are no good in wood under water.
Thanks Raggi, i do know that stainless still corrodes, (maybe it should be called something like 'lessstain' or 'lessrust') but as far as I know, even without air- the rate of corrosion is still a lot 'less' than normal steel. I am not really picturing a gleaming silver bare metal hull (well ok the thought did briefly cross my mind) but rather some sort of painted, or zinc treated or other protective finish just like a normal steel hull. With the advantage of much slower corrosion (and much higher repair costs!) I am sure that there must be some reason other than price though.

As long as you coat prepare the stainless steel you should not have a problem, i.e. you need to create the protective layer that forms on stainless steel when you have worked with it, i.e. welding / forming, if you used 316 you would be able to leave the hull bare. The rate of corrosion is slower then even painted and cared for mild steel. If you were able to source the stainless and you paint it then you would be better off than using mild steel even the lower grades of stainless are still way better than mild steel, you would have to make sure that you use the correct electrodes as you might be welding disimilar grades of stainless.

A couple of years ago we installed a stainless deck onto a self propelled mooring service lighter 40' in length, works well, plating cost was about 4x steel & consumables about 10x. Its worth it if it cuts maintenance costs in high aggression zones like anchor handling on foredecks & cockpits, sponson beltings & the like.Jeff.
What about aluminium? Isn't that more durable than steel?

Hutting yachts Hutting once (maybe more) build a 40ft all stainless yacht about 10 years ago, something simular to their current 40ft model. Don't know what happened to it http://www.hutting.nl/Hutting40/General40/maigen4001.html These days they build in aluminum, with wood/epoxy deckhouse. You could ask them for an opinon.
Hans, the most likely source would be old chemical tanks, which may not be that pleasant to work with and may have some chemical corrosion damage. The other thing that you could look for is ex road tankers that have been in a accident. How ever you do it please be carefull as 316 is most used when there are nasty chemicals or acids and there may be harmfull residue. As for a gleaming hull, yes as this is what handrails are made from, but if not looked after properly i.e. washed and cleaned like any other boat the stainless steel will get brownish surface corrosion or water marks, although this will only ever be a few microns thick
Thanks SeaSpark and antonfourie, this is all just theoretical for me at the moment. I thought it might be an interesting thread, and as it stands I have my hands full enough with my current boat. But, for a long term future oriented project, who knows? At lest it does seem that there could be prospects for obtaining the metal cheap. Maybe by the time that I am ready to invest (a rather funny word in this context) in a 40-50ft round-the-worlder I may also be ready to just buy the damn thing ready to go.

Can it be done. Yes. Practical? Not very. The Nickel Institute in Canada did a serious study of the effect of salt water on various stainless steels. What they found is that they all corrode if they are wet and stay wet. Stainless like aluminum has a natural oxide on it's surface that prevents corrosion. Water washes the oxide away. With aluminum the oxide doesn't wash away so the aluminum doesn't corrode unles you damage or remove the oxide. The other problem is the welds. The welds would have to be near perfect. Stainless is very subject to crevice corrosion. Any defect, even the slightest crack or crevice, will breed corrosion which will spread. Plus that, to weld it right you would have to use the TIG process further raising the cost. Build out of aluminum if you want a bare metal yacht. There are lots of them.
Ike, I don't really want a bare metal yacht, I am quite content at the moment with my lovely warm wooden one, I was wondering if it were possible with 316, and if so, if it had been done already- or why not? These reasons you have provided, however, are of the kind that I was looking for. Cheers.

Stainless bellow the waterline will get crevice corrosion. It will also interact chemically with antifouling paint. However, Monel metal is corrosion resistant to be used below the waterline and is also naturally antifouling. You can have a shiny boat after all.

Being as I am reading about corrosion right now...I would like to point out that stainless has two "levels" for want of a better name. One "level is significantly more noble than the other. The more noble level is the one where the chromium in the steel has oxidized (it needs a constant supply of oxygen to maintain) on the surface and is providing the corrosion inhibiting surface coating and the lesser level is any place that that coating has been penetrated (scratches, any oxygen deprived area (the coating doesn't last without oxy), etc). Add an electrolyte (salt water/contaminated fresh water...it all is to an extent) and the electrical capacity of the metal itself and you have a galvanic cell...a battery. The lesser noble level will sacrifice itself (corrode) to the more noble level (pit corrosion). You will also get corrosion anywhere stagnant water (oxy depleted) sits...the bilge for one, condensation for another. You will also encounter corrosion anywhere where you have biologicals attached to the surface of the metal, cutting it off from oxygen and in contact with moisture. The last type of corrosion you might see is around the welds, where you have altered the diffusion of alloys in the metal. The chromium gets bound up with the carbon leaving the area starved of chromium...the anti rusting agent. Using 316L (lo carbon) would help to alleviate this particular issue. Bare 316/316L needs water moving at a rate of about 3 ft/sec to maintain the coating of oxydized chromium at the required levels to provide corrosion protection. Steve

This $12 million 'mansion yacht' is made entirely of stainless steel — and it's a first for the industry. Take a peek inside.

  • A floating, mansion-like yacht was shown at the 60th annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in October.
  • It's being touted as the world's first yacht to be made entirely out of stainless steel .
  • A spokesperson for the company told FOX Business that "a few billionaires " had expressed interest in the vessel.
  • The asking price for the base 9,000-square-foot model is $12 million.

Insider Today

A vessel named Mansion Yacht was shown at the 60th annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in October, and people have been buzzing about it ever since. According to FOX Business, the yacht is the first ever to be made entirely from stainless steel.

"It does a whole bunch of other things that a normal yacht doesn't do, so it doesn't replace an ocean-going yacht, but it definitely is a great addition to the yacht family," Bruno Edwards of Mansion Yachts told FOX Business.

Edwards told Business Insider in November that the company's base 9,000-square-foot model has an asking price of $12 million. And apparently, "a few billionaires " had already expressed interest at the time.

"This will be the first one that we sell," Edwards told FOX Business in November. "We've already had a lot of interest, so we are waiting on our first contract."

In the meantime, scroll down to learn more and to look inside the stunning Mansion Yacht.

FOX Business reports that the Mansion Yacht is the first yacht to be made entirely out of stainless steel.

"It does a whole bunch of other things that a normal yacht doesn't do, so it doesn't replace an ocean-going yacht," Bruno Edwards from Mansion Yachts told FOX Business. "But it definitely is a great addition to the yacht family."

Edwards told Business Insider that the base model of the vessel has an asking price of $12 million.

Edwards also noted that the Mansion Yacht's stainless steel will keep the maintenance costs low.

"It is actually 25% of the maintenance cost of a fiberglass boat," Edwards told FOX Business.

Unique 316L stainless steel tube railings for beautiful boat design

Greenline 65 Oceanclass Yacht with super marine mirror polished stainless steel oval tube railings

Pulpits, pushpits and biminis: expert marine rail fabrication for luxury yachts and motorboats

Modern boat railings must withstand the uncompromising ocean environment, but they also have to look good. That’s why leading marine specifiers and architects have used our shaped stainless steel tubing in their designs for over three decades.

Our shaped steel tubes are durable and attractive in equal measure. From stunning staircases on superyachts to grab rails on speedboats, our shaped tubes and boat railings are second to none. They offer the marine industry aesthetic, structural and ergonomic advantages over standard round tubing and add the perfect finishing touch to any cutting-edge vessel.

Maximum resistance to corrosion

We make most of our exterior tubing for boat railings from stainless steel 316L (1.4404), which contains a higher nickel and molybdenum content for more corrosive resistance (we can work with duplex and superduplex stainless steel if required). We can also form from aluminium if required.

Luxury tenders and ribs

Timeless fabricate handrails and grab rails for some of the industry’s most prestigious and most discerning tender designers. The build quality and finish of all onboard features needs to exude the same level of luxury as those on super yachts. As with all our marine architecture, the ergonomics of the boat railings is paramount — especially as these boat railings serve an important role in keeping passengers safe and comfortable. We typically shape grab rails from our oval tubing and radius square tubing — hands fit comfortably and securely around these shapes (and unlike round tube, hands are not prone to the same degree of slippage). Robust yet refined, the boat railings are designed so that they are sturdy but with a slim projection so that they do not protrude too much. We fabricate bespoke boat railings for the front of the navigator’s seat, on the gunwales and to ease boarding and disembarking. We can also create boarding ladders. Please talk to us about our bending and finishing boat railing services.

Popular tubing for marine use

‍ Oval tubes are our most popular tubing for marine use and are predominantly used for onboard boat railings such as pulpit rails, guard rails, grab rails and transom gates. We form this elliptical tubing in more sizes than any other tube supplier worldwide, giving naval architects, boat manufacturers and owners a wide choice regarding railing specification.  Our flat-sided oval tubing is favoured for its sleek lines. Flat oval tubes make for stunning pushpit rails at the aft of any yacht or motorboat. Flat-sided oval tubes made from aluminium can be good grab rails on racing boats or when used to make lightweight bimini frames. Oval tubing and flat-sided oval tubing add luxury to any vessel - it looks sophisticated and feels better to grip than round tube railings. Our twisted oval tube makes for stunning spindles on internal staircases. The attractive contours catch the ocean light beautifully, and add an extra touch of class and elegance. For all our oval and flat-sided tubing, Timeless offers a bespoke tube bending service. We can create compound curves (curves that require two bends), sweeping curves, or tight radius bends. Speak to us about the radius that we can achieve, as well as our other fabrication services .

Customisation made easy

Whether it’s a refit, refurbishment, prototype or brand-new boat, our uniquely shaped tubing is a simple way to offer your clients greater choice with their yacht design. Our engineers will work hard to fabricate tubing of any size to meet your needs – even if this requires us to make new tooling. Many of our marine clients select stainless steel 316L tubing with a mirror polish. The highly reflective, smooth finish is achieved by polishing the tubing down to approximately 0.2 microns; the sleek and shiny surface reduces areas for corrosive elements such as sodium chloride to rest and cause damage. We can also form tubing from bronze or brass, or create a brass effect by applying PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) titanium ore plating. If you like traditional teak wood but want it to have the strength and durability of aluminium or stainless steel, we can even apply a powder coat with a wood effect.

Refits and refurbishments for motorboats and yachts

If you want to rejuvenate your boat by replacing your railings with a customised profile, speak to us and we will be delighted to provide samples of what we can offer. For refits, we make stainless steel oval boat deck handrail and handles in a wide range of sizes and shapes (we can also source round stainless steel tubing if you want to replace your existing round railings with similar tube). Our experienced team of fabricators are specialists in welding stainless steel railings for yachts, motorboats and tenders. We can also polish boat parts such as ladders, gates, handrails, cleats, bollards, biminis and anchors. Our comprehensive stainless steel polishing service includes scratch removal and re-graining. You might own an older boat that has handrails that you want to rejuvenate. We can give the metalwork a super mirror polish to bring the boat back to its former brightness. Our metal fabricators are trusted by several leading British and international boat-makers, who use Timeless to bend, weld and polish the tube railings once we have shaped them. These naval architects and designers can rely on the fact that our specialist team always achieve high-quality bends and exceptional finishes. Outsourcing these fabrication services to our team creates efficiency and cost-savings in this manufacture process.

Tubing solutions for niche marine applications

Our marine tubing goes beyond railings and staircases. For example, our engineers have worked closely with the team at premier marine equipment supplier, Lewmar, to create stainless steel tubing for an innovative mechanical awning for yachts. We’ve fabricated telescopic tubing for a hydraulic lift that is used to launch tenders and RIBS on super yachts. We have even made a door handle for a fridge on-board a yacht, with a special locking mechanism to prevent it from opening during voyages. Our engineers love using their creativity and expertise to produce tubing for new applications, so please chat to us to see if we can help with your projects.

Zen Yachts

The ZEN50 is a game changer. World’s first series production catamaran equipped with a wingsail, it defines a new distinctive class of its own, where genuine zero-emission meets high comfort and performance, limitlessly.

Designed from scratch for ZEN Yachts by award-winning naval architect Julien Mélot , this full carbon catamaran is the ultimate essence of technology driven, high performance and luxurious, eco-friendly leisure yachting.

The blue water capable ZEN50 lightweight racing carbon hulls are combined with a huge solar roof for an unrivaled solar power vs. displacement ratio above 1:1 (18 kW / 17 tonnes), making this yacht completely energy self-sufficient. A revolutionary, fully automated, wingsail - by Ayro© - can be added as a range and speed extender. The yacht’s high capacity battery bank powers a powerful silent electric propulsion, allowing the ZEN50 to achieve 14 knots and maintain high continuous speeds in unrivaled safety and comfort, indefinitely…

The ZEN50 is offered with or without wingsail and comes in 3 main different versions: Racer, Cruiser and Explorer, each dedicated to a different usage and owner profile. We use these versions as a basis to define a final, bespoke specification for each of our valued clients and ZEN Community Members. Scroll down for more details, specifications and prices.

1st WINGSAIL series production yacht in the world!

The OceanWings32 - by Ayro© - was initially developed for Team Oracle, for the America’s Cup 2010 in Valencia. Over years, it has further been developed and automated by VPLP and was installed on Energy Observer in 2019. Two years of field feedback have allowed the Ayro team to fine tune the algorithm commanding the wingsail. The ZEN50 is the first series production leisure craft to be equipped with this fully automated wingsail. It is controlled at the touch of a finger on screens, is automatically adjusted and has several safety modes and features. The two parts of the wingsail can be hoisted and lowered independently and with the simple touch of a button. The wingsail OceanWings32 is the ideal complement for the solar roof for those wishing to cruise long distances off-shore with zero-emissions.

ZEN50 wingsail and solar powered performance zero emission electric catamaran yacht by ZEN Yachts

Greatest ratio SOLAR POWER / weight on the market

At 17 tonnes lightweight and 18,000 W of peak solar power, the ratio of the ZEN50 is at over 1 kW per displaced tonne of water or beyond 1:1 which is far beyond any other blue water CE Cat A yacht in this size range. Lots of solar power for little water to displace is the strong and healthy foundation the energy self-sufficient ZEN50 is built upon.

Performance CARBON sandwich hulls

The hulls of the ZEN50 have been designed from a blank screen for ultimate efficiency - understand minimum drag or minimal energy consumption for a range of speeds from 6 to 10 knots. Their shape is aggressive, sharp and slender. Their reverse bows cut through water like a sword cuts through butter and their curvature is reminiscent of graceful dolphin bodies. These hulls are undoubtedly of the performance type and are built with the best available composites: Carbon fibre and Corecell™. The combination of high strength, low weight and performance design allow the ZEN50 to reach speeds of up to 14 knots.

INFINITE range at high CONTINUOUS speeds

With maximized solar and wind power and minimized energy consumption… the ZEN50 can sail continuously at speeds varying between 6 and 10 knots. Thorough simulations in various sea states and weather system have consistently shown the ZEN50 will be able to achieve performance catamaran speeds continuously without using a genset. With the ZEN50, the world is your oyster and the wildest destinations are within your reach with this self-reliant vessel!

True ZERO-EMISSION operation

The first ZEN50 unit, whose construction started in March 2023, will not be equipped with a genset at all and will not have any fossil fuels onboard. The ZEN50 energy system with its very large capacity 160 kWh battery bank, has been designed to function for days in complete safety with minimal solar energy harvest and no wind. It is perfectly safe with no backup genset and operates 24/7 without any polluting emissions.

NO FUEL , no costs

Naturally, requiring no fuel to operate day in day out is great news for the environment, it is also fantastic news when sailing into remote areas where fuel bunkering might be near impossible or where the fuel quality might be an issue. Finally, it also makes a massive difference in this yacht’s costs of operation. Imagine the hundreds of liters of diesel saved over just a week, the obsolete engine maintenance schedules, the clogged filters and dirty tanks from another age… Welcome to a new burden-free, energy self-sufficient era, welcome to clean and graceful eco-yachting, welcome to ZEN Yachts.

Highest SAFETY & reliability

At ZEN Yachts, we have made some design choices to attain energy self-reliance with the ZEN50 that reduces the habitable volume in the hulls, similar to performance catamarans. Where we have not and will never compromise is on safety. Our main voltage system is 48V making it perfectly safe to work on. The level of redundancy of the batteries and solar panels is 10! The main electrical architecture is split in 2 so that should anything happen on 1 hull, the entire vessel can still operate normally. There are 2 independent helm stations and the ZEN50 is packed with special safety features, nonsubmersible compartments and we can even offer an in-depth practical course on safety equipment usage and management. Sailing with the ZEN50 is not only exhilarating and clean, it is ultra safe!

Unrivaled space & COMFORT

The ZEN50 offers the speeds of a performance catamaran, the comfort of a large motor yacht and the simplicity of an electric car. No less than 2 large day beds, 3 dining areas for over 10 people, 1 professional galley and 2 wet kitchens, 5 heads, up to 4 double ensuite cabins, 1 bunk double and 1 single together with both saloon and dining areas converting into extra sleeping areas, this is simply unrivaled on a 50 ft. catamaran. Add an electric tender, dive compressor, satellite internet, 2 helm stations (cockpit and flybridge), a solar roof that converts into a gigantic upper deck to enjoy the most epic sunrises and sunsets, welcome onboard the ZEN50!

Types of Marine-Grade Stainless Steel

When purchasing stainless-steel accessories for your boat, you want something that will last. Saltwater and even freshwater take their toll on just about anything made of metal. Plus, if your vessel isn't in a covered slip, the weather can also harm your hardware and accessories – if they aren’t made of quality stainless steel.

What Is 304-Grade Stainless Steel?

304-grade stainless steel is made of 18 percent chromium and 8 percent nickel. It doesn't have the corrosion-resistant molybdenum to decrease the speed of rust from de-icing salt and seawater.

Commonly used applications for grade 304 stainless steel include wheel covers, electrical enclosures, auto trim and moldings, storage tanks, kitchen appliances, and equipment that is not around saltwater, chloride, or strong disinfecting agents.

What Is 316-Grade Stainless Steel?

Grade 316 stainless steel contains 16 percent chromium, 10 percent nickel, and 2 percent molybdenum. The molybdenum significantly reduces corrosion from the salt in de-icing chemicals and saltwater. Grade 316 stainless steel also resists pitting and corrosion from spilled acidic drinks, such as soda, and cleaning materials containing chlorine and other harmful chemicals.

You can sometimes get away with using 304-grade stainless steel, which is more affordable. However, if you are boating, even on freshwater lakes and rivers, you'll want to use marine-grade 316 stainless steel. You may pay a little more upfront, but in the long run, you'll save money since you won't have to replace your hardware or accessories as frequently.

In addition to marine parts and accessories, manufacturers use grade 316 stainless steel for pharmaceutical equipment, stainless-steel baskets, chemical equipment, medical/surgical instruments, and outdoor electrical enclosures.

How to Tell the Difference Between Grade 316 and Grade 304 Stainless Steel

You can't tell the difference between 316-grade and 304-grade stainless steel by simply looking at it. However, if you have something made from 304-grade stainless steel and another item made from 316-grade stainless steel, you'll likely notice that the former rusts faster. Otherwise, you'll need a material test to determine the difference.

Marine applications and chemical processing plants use grade 316 stainless steel because it is less resistant to corrosion. This type of stainless steel also costs more because of its nickel and molybdenum composition. Therefore, if you see an accessory you want for your boat, don't go with the cheaper version – it might not be marine grade 316 stainless steel.

Another difference is that 304-grade stainless steel has a higher melting point than 316-grade stainless steel. Still, it doesn't resist chlorides and chemicals as well as marine grade 316 stainless steel does.

Often, the manufacturer will mark the stainless-steel part to indicate its grade. It might have a circle with the number 6 in it or some other marking to denote that the product you are buying is made of grade 316 stainless steel.

Benefits of Using Grade 316 Stainless Steel

The top benefits of using 316-grade stainless steel include its corrosion resistance and lasting durability for marine applications. Stainless steel will eventually pit when water (especially saltwater) hits it. However, salt from seawater will have a harder time disintegrating the coating on 316-grade stainless steel than it would on 304-grade products. Even salt air can cause pitting in Grade 304 stainless steel because it has less nickel and no molybdenum.

Simple Tips for Maintaining Stainless Steel

stainless steel yachts

Moisture with little or no oxygen invites rust. Salt, which helps to hold moisture, is a catalyst for the process. This is why rust normally starts at the base of bedded stainless-steel hardware, at longitudinal joins of rolled handrails, or in pitted areas. Welded areas have a higher susceptibility to corrosion, because heating stainless can destroy its stainless qualities. That’s why it is better to cut stainless steel by hand with a hacksaw than with an electric cutting wheel, which overheats the metal, causing stainless steel to rust where it was cut.

Polishing discoloration from stainless steel can actually wipe away evidence of impending doom. Colored dye test kits and a magnifying glass can help to detect defects in stainless steel that lead to failure. But even new stainless hardware can unexpectedly fail. Stainless chainplates and mast tangs are notorious failure points due to cyclical loading and corrosion penetration at minute cracks. Our special report Marine Metal Warning , delved into this topic.

To get a brilliant, long-lasting finish, manufacturers of high-grade marine hardware give their 304 and 316 products an electropolish. Electro-polishing involves bathing metal in a mild acid with an electric current. This takes away all the impurities and makes the stainless shine. Old stainless-steel hardware can be removed from your boat to be electro-polished again.

Even if you don’t electro-polish, you can bring stainless back to a shiny condition that helps ward off corrosion. Brightening the stainless also gives you an opportunity to inspect the hardware.

What stainless-steel deck hardware likes best is plenty of fresh water and mild soap to rinse away moisture-retaining salt and grime. On long, rainless ocean passages, it can be helpful to scrub down the decks, even with buckets of seawater, to reduce the concentration of salt residue. To eliminate the salt without wasting precious water, follow this rinse by wiping down with a wet rag soaked in fresh water. Don’t use chlorine cleaners as these are highly corrosive.

Getting out the shinola kit and buffing stainless steel before it rusts is a good practice. For longer lasting results—especially in welds or other areas where rust has developed—a passivation step can prolong protection against corrosion.

Our test of rust-stain removers showed that the most effective cleaners usually contained phosphoric acid or oxalic acid. Pastes were preferable. A jar of runny cleaner can spill easily, and any acid must be thoroughly rinsed, since the acid can harm gelcoat. This is one of the reasons Practical Sailor as well as industrial standards now prefer citric acid-based formulations like those described in “ Stainless Steel Passivization Testing” (including our own super-cheap DIY formula).  These formulations can be used almost entirely without buffing (no buffing in most cases), resulting in stain-free stainless and extended protection against corrosion.

When applying a paste cleaner, a toothbrush is useful for buffing tight spots and working into the pores of welds; follow by buffing with a cotton cloth. A green, 3M scrubby pad helps remove more aggressive stains. Continued rusting in welded areas might indicate developing failure, requiring replacement. Rust can also be effectively treated with a longer passivation treatment. The report passivating stainless steel, also describes the proper dwell time required for for full effect. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water and mild soap when done.

Applying one of our favorite cleaner waxes or one of the best polish-protectants from our metal polish test will help protect against corrosion, but, this protection doesn’t last long. One of our top-rated corrosion-block sprays will offer slightly better protection, but some of these products are quite sticky, so they will pick up dirt.

Generally, a regular fresh water rinse is all you will need to preserve the tough protective oxide coating that high-quality stainless steel naturally forms with exposure to oxygen. However, in many cases — welding, cutting, and deeper corrosion pitting — an extra step of passivating the stainless steel will provide further protection. In our stainless steel passivation testing , this simple inexpensive step proved very effective in warding off future corrosion.

All this close, hands-on attention not only keeps the stainless looking bright but can prevent a major failure of the rigging. The close work makes it easier to inspect components, and the cleaning will often uncover cracked turnbuckles, wire end fittings, and other hardware problem before they fail.

For more on cleaning stainless and dealing with other problem boat stains, check out our e-book Essential Cleaners , part of a three-part series on marine cleaners .

RELATED ARTICLES MORE FROM AUTHOR

In fact, the citric acid-based formulations in “Stainless Steel Passivization Testing” were used almost entirely without buffing (no buffing in most cases), resulting in stain free stainless and extended protection. It is now preferred to other acid chemistries, by both PS and within industrial standards.

Barkeepers Friend, the pump spray-on version, works very well. A ‘magic eraser’ pad can be used to touch up the more resistant areas. This works not only for the Stainless Steel but for any gelcoat in close contact.

Barkeepers Friend is very cheap and extremely effective without a lot of extra scrubbing and without any nasty residue.

Thanks, Evan, I’ll give it a try!

I’ve noticed that a lot of the new top quality Korean cables (not the cheap Chinese stuff) show signs of light corrosion almost immediately after rigging so can this method be used on stainless steel rigging/lifeline cables and turnbuckles – especially where the cable meets the turnbuckle. Is it safe to put the paste around that junction as long as you rinse it thoroughly afterwards? Might make for an interesting test. Keep up the great work!

Since 316 stainless steel is rated for long term citric acid exposure, there is no risk of leaving it on too long. Phosphoric acid and oxalic acid can cause staining if they dry in place. Citric acid can stain 400 series stainless alloys (some knives, for example); there are products buffered to a greater pH for this application.

Bar Keepers Friend or FSR, and a toothbrush. Perfecto.

Rinsing is the hard part.

Hello all you Practical Sailer folks. I have been using The Works, a bath and shower cleaner, for keeping Shooting Star’s stainless deck hardware rust free. Spray the pieces once or twice a day, no rinse needed, for two to three weeks. The rust stains will fade away day by day with no work needed. The Works also works for soaking ugly stainless steel things for a day or two to remove rust stains. Mike, on Shooting Star

Yacht Lettering

Here’s some examples of our lettering styles.

Our yacht lettering styles are all high standard finishes. Choose from our wide choice of 3D yacht lettering. Contact us for expert marine sign guidance and help choosing the right lettering for your yacht name logo.

Custom-Line

stainless steel yachts

By far our most cost-effective 3D yacht letter assembly that incorporates LED illumination. Designed to suit a budget whilst maintaining a high standard of finish and a lighting effect you would expect on a larger yacht.

Available from 5mm thick right up to 50mm thick. Yacht letters can be gloss or matte acrylic or even painted to match a specific RAL colour or paint code.

Letters are backed with a 10mm thick, light-diffusing opal plexiglass as standard and fronts can be bevelled as an option.

NIGHT MODE : LED Colour – 6000K Crisp Cool White

stainless steel yachts

Simple lines with minimal surface protrusion. A popular style synonymous with the marine and superyacht industry. An ideal choice for smaller production boats around 70ft-80ft where swim platform space is minimal and letters are of a smaller scale.

The 316L polished stainless steel top letter is backed with 10mm thick, light-diffusing opal plexiglass offering spotless halo illumination

The stainless steel front letter is supplied as 2mm thick as standard or 4mm as optional. The opal backing can be bevelled as an optional extra.

NIGHT MODE : LED Colour – 3000k Warm White

stainless steel yachts

The MID-LINE range is perfectly suited to the 25m+ market where medium sized letters require a little added rigidity and flare.

Letters are supplied with 4mm thick mirror-polished stainless steel and backed with 10mm thick (flush or bevelled) light-diffusing opal plexiglass, for spotless illumination.

A gloss white/black 8mm thick acrylic trim seals the back of the letter adding extra depth, rigidity and increased definition. As a general rule, white backing is used for dark hulls and black for lighter-coloured hulls.

NIGHT MODE : LED Colour – 4000k Neutral White

stainless steel yachts

Primarily for the larger 50m+ projects with increased letter and logo sizes. Extra letter thickness gives superior rigidity and aesthetically correct proportions to the size of yacht.

A 4mm polished stainless steel top letter is laminated onto 28mm of solid machined acrylic. Comprised of 20mm flush/bevelled opal plexiglass laminated onto 8mm acrylic backing, the assembly offers spotless halo illumination.

The backing trims give beautiful letter definition, contrasting against the superstructure surface. As a general rule, white backing is used for dark hulls and black for lighter-coloured hulls.

NIGHT MODE : LED Colour – 5000k Daylight White

stainless steel yachts

Primarily for the larger 50m+ projects with increased letter and logo sizes. Extra letter thickness gives superior rigidity and aesthetically correct proportions to the size of the yacht.

A 4mm polished stainless steel top letter is mounted onto a layer of 15mm painted acrylic, which is then – in turn – laminated to 28mm of solid machined acrylic. Comprised of 20mm flush/bevelled opal plexiglass laminated onto 8mm acrylic backing, the assembly offers spotless halo illumination.

Some prestigious projects often require larger-than-standard letters, or that little extra something for added character and esteem.  Custom-Line products are machined from a wide range of high-end materials, including – but not limited to – stainless steel, acrylic, carbon fibre and even solid iroko.

If you can think it, we can almost certainly create it.

Our Custom-Line range allows you to indulge your creativity with a variety of CNC-cut letter profiles, shapes and surface finishes to suit even the most specific of tastes.

And coupled with a myriad of luxury marine-grade finishes – from specific paint codes to PVD coating – you can really let your imagination run wild.

Yacht Finishes

Here’s some examples of our yacht finishes, mirror polished finish, pvd gold finish, pvd anthracite black, pvd champagne gold, pvd designer range, ral painted acrylic.

The mirror polished finish, similar to a chrome boat letters finish is the industry standard finish for the majority of yacht signs and yacht logos around the world and the perfect choice for those who want their sign to shine radiantly as the sun hits its stainless steel fronts.

From 1.2mm up to 50mm thick, solid mirror-polished yacht letters are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also in-keeping with the luxury sensibilities of the yacht industry. Available in polished, matte, satin or brushed finishes.

stainless steel yachts

316L stainless steel letters are mirror-polished and put through a process known as physical vapour deposition (PVD). In this instance, a hard gold coating is applied to give the appearance of 24-karat solid gold letters, while the anti-corrosive properties and mirrored effect of the stainless steel are preserved beneath the finish.

PVD gold will suit both modern and traditional yachts alike, with far superior weather resistance compared to gold leaf.

Available in polished, matte, satin or brushed finishes.

stainless steel yachts

316L stainless steel letters are mirror-polished and PVD-coated in a hard black anthracite plating to give an ultra-modern finish to the letters, whilst maintaining the anti-corrosive properties and the mirrored effect of the stainless steel beneath.

This style takes inspiration from jet-black supercar alloys and modern Swiss watch bezels. Truly an ideal look for those wanting to make a bold statement.

stainless steel yachts

316L stainless steel letters are mirror-polished and PVD-coated in a hard champagne-gold plating, to give a subtle light-gold hue.  The anti-corrosive properties and mirrored effect of the stainless steel are preserved beneath the finish.

Champagne gold finishes are commonly found on modern smart phones and tablets, as well as high-end watches and opulent home furnishings.

stainless steel yachts

Example provided: Copper.

316L stainless steel letters are mirror-polished and PVD-coated in a hard plating to give modern jewellery-like finish to the letters. The anti-corrosive properties and the mirrored effect of the stainless steel beneath are maintained.

Think of pink champagne, rose gold jewellery, antique copper furnishings and Riviera sunsets.

stainless steel yachts

Acrylic, Stainless Steel or Aluminium letters can be wet-sprayed or powder-coated to any desired colour. Custom levels of matte and gloss finish can also be requested.

RAL numbers and pantones can be matched to existing colours onboard the yacht to continue a specific colour theme across, or as part of, the yacht signage.

stainless steel yachts

A material displayed in abundance on yacht exteriors, yet unique in the form of lettering. Solid teak lettering can be CNC machined to suit most designs and logos.

The addition of stainless steel sees the two highly complimentary materials sit together harmoniously, creating an organic, yet crisp, nautical feel.

Definitely for the most style conscious of customer.

Non Illuminated Yacht Lettering

Of course, illuminated Boat lettering is not for everyone, in light of this all our yacht names & logo styles are also available as a ‘non’ illuminated style. In conjunction with this we also produce acrylic hailing port lettering, identification numbers & stainless steel boat names which can also be illuminated.

Please take some time to browse through our above yacht / boat lettering styles and finishes to see what suits your project best.

Sites such as fonts.com  offer a comprehensive library of fonts which we have access to so please take some time to peruse them and inform us when you have one or two ideas in mind.

If you are unable to find the exact lettering style you have in mind, please contact us and we will be more than happy to discuss your requirements.

The 12-piece range features key items from past projects, each one taking up to six months to build. “I have clients who changed their loose exterior yacht furniture four times in the past six years because off-the-shelf ranges can’t withstand the harsh marine environment,” Gatto tells <em>Robb Report</em>.
