EARTH 300 – The Incredible 984ft Gigayacht Design Concept

Iddes Yachts has unveiled a new concept for an exploration and research vessel that seems to break all boundaries previously known to yacht design.

At a length of 300 meters (984 ft), this concept vessel named EARTH 300 would be longer than the Titanic and fit into an entirely new category, the Giga yacht.

EARTH 300 will not be a private superyacht made for relaxation and luxury. The concept focuses on scientific research and providing state-of-the-art facilities.

More than 400 people will be able to fit on this incredible yacht which could include 160 scientists, 165 crew members, 40 guests, 20 students, and a further 20 resident experts. A total of 22 laboratories are designed to give researchers all the necessary supplies and gear they need to conduct studies right aboard the vessel.

The concept is meant to unite features from luxury yachts, cruises, exploration, and research ships without being too close to any one of them.

This is how Aaron Olivera, the CEO of the Earth 300 initiative has described the Giga yacht which will take marine conservation efforts to a new level.

The EARTH 300 Giga yacht looks incredibly futuristic and surreal with its large science sphere that will house what the CEO has described as a “science city” of laboratories and research facilities.

The founder of Iddes Yachts and lead naval architect of the project Iván Salas Jefferson states that EARTH 300 will help conquer “earth’s greatest challenges” suggesting an involvement of the vessel in sustainability and research efforts. 

The entire concept is highly futuristic with Jefferson even describing Iddes as becoming an “alchemist of global solutions”.

The sphere is somewhat of a symbolic element that is meant to represent the earth in addition to looking like an alien spaceship.

Although the science sphere is the most prominent feature of the EARTH 300 she also features a large observation deck with an attached helipad at the bow of the vessel.

The views from this part of the yacht will be nearly 360° providing the perfect opportunity for stargazing.

As is to be expected from a vessel meant for conservation efforts EARTH 300 will sail emission-free due to its engines powered by nuclear energy (specifically MSRs).

This technology has gained popularity in recent times and millions are expected to be invested in its research in the coming years.

The yacht is expected to carry a whole fleet of submarines to aid in underwater exploration. Exact specifications of EARTH 300 such as speed, reach and measurements are not currently available until the concept is further developed by Iddes.

Since the EARTH 300 Giga yacht is only a concept at this point in time there is no exact price tag that can be attached to this extraordinary vessel.

While the design and engineering processes are complete the research yacht is not expected to set sail before 2025 at the earliest.

However, large companies such as IBM, Triton Submarines, and RINA have announced their support for the project which will hopefully aid it in reaching completion in the coming years.

Inside the 300m science exploration vessel complete with a "science sphere" and 22 onboard laboratories

A 300-metre science exploration vessel packed with green technology, a “science sphere”, and the capacity to hold more than 400 people on board has been revealed.

Penned by Iddes Yachts , Earth 300 is described as a vessel “that will unite science and exploration to confront earth’s greatest challenges," by Iddes Yacht founder Ivan Salas Jefferson.

The vessel will act as an extreme technology platform for science, exploration and innovation at sea, incorporating robotics, AI and 22 state-of-the-art on board laboratories.

“The ship will introduce features found on cruise, expedition, research and luxury yachts but she will be none of them,” said Earth 300 chief executive Aaron Olivera.

Featuring naval architecture by NED, Earth 300 will be emission-free and powered by Molten Salt Reactors, which provide sustainable, clean energy.

Other features include a science city housed inside a huge sphere, an observation deck, a 46-metre beam and an interior dedicated to scientific research and expedition. The vessel will also carry a selection of advanced underwater vehicles.

Accommodation will be for a total of 160 scientists, 20 experts-in-residence, 20 students, 40 VIP guests and 165 crew.

Led by chief executive Olivera, the Earth 300 project is supported by a number of partners including IBM, RINA, Triton Submarines and EYOS Expeditions.

The preliminary vessel design and naval engineering are now complete, with Earth 300 projecting a launch date of 2025.

A futuristic vessel designed for oceanic research, the EARTH 300 is emission-free and powered by nuclear energy.

A “science city” on board an explorer vessel is big enough to accommodate 160 scientists and 22 state-of-the-art laboratories. Set for launch in 2025, the EARTH 300 boasts 984 feet in length and will be packed full of green technology with the intent to study climate change and hopefully come up with some solutions.

Designed for the future

International firm Iddes Yachts is behind the design of the ship , led by naval architect Iván Salas Jefferson. Suitably futuristic, the bold new concept features a contemporary shape with a pared-down conceptual language and an aerodynamic form. 

Polish naval architecture firm NED worked alongside Iddes Yachts in finessing Earth 300’s otherworldly design , which is perforated with a pattern of geometric shapes extending towards the nose of the ship. 

The vessel’s most striking feature, however, is its “science sphere”, chosen to resemble Earth, and poetically the focal area in which scientists will work hard to save it. It contains a 13-storey “science city” bringing together some of the world’s leading climate scientists, who together will collaborate on new climate solutions with the help of the ship’s state-of-the-art technology. 

Other features include an observation deck that appears delicately balanced on the ship’s top, a 46-metre beam and a helicopter pad. The vessel will also carry a selection of advanced underwater vehicles for underwater expeditions.

“The ship will introduce features found on cruise, expedition, research and luxury yachts but she will be none of them,” explains Earth 300 chief executive Aaron Olivera.

A first of many firsts

Powered by atomic energy, the zero-emission superyacht steals power from an onboard molten-salt reactor based on technology created by TerraPower, the nuclear innovations company set up by Bill gates.

It’s a first as quantum computing and a molten salt reactor have never been installed on a ship before. Essentially, the ship will be built as a floating computer, costing a staggering £350-500 million to build. 

EARTH 300 spans a sizable 984 feet, making it bigger than the Titanic and nearing the four-figures some of the largest ships in the world possess. Most of this will be taken up with scientific equipment that a fleet of climate scientists will use to capture real-time data.  

A combination of built-in sensors, artificial intelligence, robotics, machine learning and real-time data processing will make sense of the data, as well as the world’s first commercial, ocean-going quantum computer. All the information gathered will be open-source and shared with other climate scientists as part of its mission to “ unites both science and exploration to take on some of the biggest challenges on Earth. ”

“To face the epic challenge posed by climate change, Earth 300 will combine science, technology, adventure, exploration, education and entertainment like it was never done before ,” says Giulio Ceppi, head of systems design at EARTH 300. 

“Citizen science” will be our key for a better future: we want to create the most innovative and effective tool to plan collectively for the survival of the oceans and the planet .”

The Future of EARTH 300

According to the EARTH 300 official website , the plan is for the ship to set sail in 2025 , catering for up to 160 scientists from a variety of disciplines at any one time. Also on board will be 20 students, 165 crew members, and 40 VIP guests who will pay $3 million for their tickets.

Led by chief executive Olivera, the Earth 300 project is supported by a number of partners including IBM , Triton Submarines , EYOS Expeditions and RINA , which is among the world-leading classification societies in the cruise ships sector.

With the preliminary vessel design and naval engineering now complete, we now need only wait for Earth 300’s projected launch date of 2025.

Superyacht, Earth 300, to launch in 2025 on a journey to save planet earth

A 300m-long superyacht is set to launch in 2025, carrying a scientific "strike force" tasked with studying the earth's climate and coming up with plans to tackle global warming.

Called Earth 300 , the research vessel will feature a 13-storey Science Sphere, housing 22 laboratories and acting as a floating scientific hub.

Designed by Iddes Yachts – led by naval architect Iván Salas Jefferson – and Polish naval architecture firm NED, it will be home to 160 of the brightest minds in science, dedicated to studying the most pressing challenges of our time.

Earth 300 will be powered by a molten salt reactor, a new form of atomic energy which uses molten fluoride salts as primary coolant. This, according to the team behind Earth 300, will provide a "sustainable, clean energy needed to move ocean transportation into the future".

The project is the brainchild of Singapore-based entrepreneur Aaron Oliveira.

"Our ambition for Earth 300 was fearless from the start: we wanted to build the Olympic Torch of global science, to expand our knowledge and understanding of the universe, both above and below the ocean’s surface," Oliveira said.

"Earth 300 represents an unparalleled opportunity for academia and private enterprise to collaborate on the most pressing challenges of our time.

"We’re bringing 160 of the brightest minds into our Science Sphere and equipping them with a level of technology never before seen on an ocean-going research vessel.

"Our radical design – iconic, intelligent, aesthetically-pleasing – is intentional.

"It’s a 300-metre fabrication of the future. The 13-storey Science Sphere and cantilevered Observation Deck are the most obvious and eye-catching examples."

According to Oliveira, the preliminary vessel design of Earth 300 is ready and approved and the initial naval engineering is completed.

"We now have global partners who are supporting us with next stages," he added.

"We are living at a pivotal moment in human history, facing the greatest challenge since the dawn of man - climate change so our goal is to ring the climate alarm on a global scale and inspire an era of ecological imagination, spawning a new brand of planetary vanguard, ethical leaders who will support a new economic and ecological vision for the world.”

Explorer vessels typically feature some sort of research laboratory, but apparently, the word typical isn’t in Iddes Yachts ‘ vocabulary. The international design firm, led by naval architect Iván Salas Jefferson, has unveiled a bold new concept that is less like an expedition vessel and more like a seafaring alien ship from the future.

The striking behemoth has been dubbed Earth 300‚ with a stated mission to carry out research expeditions in order to “confront earth’s greatest challenges,” according to Jefferson. Featuring naval architecture by NED , it spans an insane 984 feet—300 meters, hence the suffix—which makes it even longer than RMS Titanic (883 feet). The majority of that real estate has been dedicated to scientific equipment and tech straight from Silicon Valley.

In fact, Earth 300 has no less than 22 state-of-the-art laboratories. The vessel’s pièce-de-résistance, though, is the jaw-dropping “science sphere” that resides on the aft deck. Iddes says the jet-black globe houses a “science city”—presumably a vast area dedicated to oceanic research. Aside from its lofty ambitions, it also happens to look dead cool.

As you might expect, the vessel also incorporates the latest in robotics and AI technology, along with a fleet of advanced underwater vessels to help with deep-sea studies.

“We wanted to create a design that would inspire,” Jefferson said in a statement. “When one looked at the sphere, we wanted them to be inspired to protect Earth. When one would walk into the sphere, now housing the science city, and felt the action of all the ongoing scientific works, we wanted them to be inspired to become an alchemist of global solutions.”

Beyond the striking science orb, the vessel also has a standout observation deck located forward of the vessel. It will offer seafarers unparalleled views of the surrounding environment when a break from research is required. The foredeck, meanwhile, sports a helideck for a chopper that can support further exploration by air while providing transport to and from the vessel when needed.

As for who will actually stay aboard this floating research mecca, well, it has the capacity to hold more than 400 people. The accommodation can sleep a total of 160 scientists, 20 experts-in-residence, 20 students, 40 VIP guests and some 165 crew.

As you would expect from vessel charged with studying the ocean, Earth 300 is designed for emissions-free sailing. The vessel will reportedly be powered by nuclear tech known as molten salt reactors (MSRs). These mini-nukes are said to provide sustainable, clean energy and may be cheaper than other types of propulsion. Research on MSRs stalled in the 1970s, though the power source has made something of a comeback in recent years. In fact, Danish startup Seaborg Technologies recently secured $24 million for maritime reactor development.

So, when can we expect Earth 300 to start actually traversing the Earth? The preliminary vessel design and naval engineering are now complete, and the project has gained a number of partners, including IBM, RINA, Triton Submarines and EYOS Expeditions. Iddes anticipates Earth 300 will launch in 2025, which gives just enough time to recruit the crew.

Traditionally, superyachts were all about extravagance. But modern yacht design calls for a more substantial fabric - a purpose that goes beyond pure hedonistic pleasure vessels. Iddes Yachts and the team at Earth 300 heard that call, and ran with it. Meet the 300m floating ‘opera of science’, equipped with 22 laboratories and run on Molten Salt Reactors, which is about to change the game of superyacht design as we know it.

The specification of Earth 300 is like nothing that has ever come before. Building on a platform first popularised by the likes of REV and OceanXplorer, Earth 300 will bring not only scientists but world leaders and decision-makers on its research missions, with the aim of inspiring the individuals who are capable of making real change. ‘We’re going to make science sexy, ’ Ivan Salas Jefferson, Founder of Iddes Yachts , tells Superyachts.com. ‘ We’re going to spread the word and take ocean conservation where no one has been before.’ Add to this cutting-edge AI and Robotics systems, a host of submersibles and semi-submersibles and an atomic propulsion system and the result is a more sustainable and state-of-the-art vessel than any other ever conceived. 

But it is not just the sheer size of the project that makes Earth 300 so remarkable, though at 300 metres she would easily become the largest superyacht ever built. It is the network of the project itself, bringing together an international array of collaborators and experts all united by one common vision. So - where did it all begin?

Ivan Jefferson first met Aaron Olivera, CEO of Earth 300, in a small village in northern Sweden. The two instantly clicked over a shared vision - to ‘unite science and exploration to confront face to face earth’s greatest challenges, and solve these ’.

Such an ambitious goal called for something remarkable of course. Aaron had a clear brief for the team - he wanted a vessel that looked completely foreign, a simplistic design with a geodesic dome on the aft.

‘The ship will introduce features found on cruise, expedition, research and luxury yachts but she will be none of them, ’ Aaron Olivera comments in a statement. 

Sustainability being the goal, the topic of propulsion was to be of paramount importance. After some deliberation the team decided the only suitable propulsion to power a vessel of this size would be atomic, and so Core-Power joined the mission. Core-Power is a leading figure in the design and integration of Molten Salt Reactors in the marine industry, and will facilitate Earth 300’s journey to become the first vessel to be equipped with this next-generation propulsion system. 

Polish naval architecture firm NED has worked alongside Iddes Yachts in finessing Earth 300’s out-of-this-world design. NED’s expertise in implementing cutting-edge green technology into exploration and Arctic units, together with EYOS Expeditions’ insight, will prove crucial to Earth 300’s long-range autonomy and exploration capabilities. 

World-leading tech firm IBM has also joined the partnership, providing high-performance computing to Earth 300 with the potential to grow the vessel’s suite of cutting-edge systems. 

A concept of this scale, with a truly futuristic design and mission to match, would typically remain just that. A concept. But Earth 300 is well on the way to acquiring RINA Approval in Principle, confirming that the design and engineering is feasible for construction.

After that, it will be seven years until MSR technology is expected to be available and operable on this scale. Like climate change though, the Earth 300 team will not be waiting around. Iddes Yachts is actively investigating alternative propulsion systems, with retro-fitting an MSR reactor in mind for when this becomes a reality.

Eco-tourism for billionaires.

A nuclear-powered ship full of scientists, activists and billionaires, sailing the world and examining the state of the oceans. That’s the dream of entrepreneur Aaron Olivera, who believes the novel vessel will help raise environmental awareness.

The ship, called Earth 300, was designed by superyacht specialist Ivan Salas Jefferson. Almost 300 meters long and 60 meters high, it’ll be able to accommodate 425 people. Most of those will be staff, scientists and students, traveling for free. A handful of wealthy tourists, housed in luxury suites, will pay $3 million each for a 10-day journey — helping to make the venture profitable.

At a launch dinner in Singapore, Olivera talked rapidly and enthusiastically about his dream, rolling off names of entrepreneurs and politicians mixed with emotive phrases about saving the environment, inspiring youth and furthering science. He wants Earth 300 to be a global architectural icon that encourages people to think more seriously about the climate. The modernist design, clean lines, cantilevered observation deck and 13-story glass ‘science sphere’ are meant to spark awe.

“We wanted the sphere to inspire whoever looks at it to save the planet,” Olivera said, in a restaurant that was once the ticket hall for ferries to Singapore’s outer islands. “Imagine if we could build an object that would galvanize people around the planet.” He calls the ship “The Eiffel Tower of our generation.”

Beyond the hubris there is still a long way to make the boat a reality. It has taken six years and $5 million to get to this point, where the design is advanced enough to take to shipyards to work out construction quotes. 

Olivera said the group is considering shipyards in Europe and South Korea. Earth 300 executives estimate the total cost would come to between $500 million and $700 million. With the ship scheduled to launch in 2025 and certification for the reactor not expected for another five to seven years, the vessel is likely to run initially on synthetic green fuels. Atomic propulsion may also create issues with nations such as New Zealand, which has banned nuclear-powered ships from docking since 1984.

Olivera wants the vessel’s first trip to be a circumnavigation of Antarctica, followed by an Arctic voyage. The ship would be designed to operate for 300 days a year, generating around $100 million from wealthy eco-tourists, with additional revenue from hosting events or movie sets, he said.

Those who pay for the 10 luxury suites with private balconies would also get accommodation for personal staff in a separate set of cabins. Another 10 suites would be made available to what Olivera calls Very Interesting Persons – people from all walks of life who would bring a unique experience or knowledge to the voyage.

Olivera envisages inviting artists, explorers and students to spend time on the ship, hobnobbing with billionaires, but paying a lower fee or even traveling for free.

With them, working in 22 laboratories, would be some 160 scientists, who would carry out research and gather data using the ship’s equipment and thousands of built-in sensors, including what could be the first commercial ocean-going quantum computer. Olivera said the project would be “open source,” with information and processing facilities shared with other climate research efforts around the world.

At the dinner in Singapore, Olivera lined up an array of scientists and environmentalists via video links to voice their support for the venture. He says he has interest from unnamed wealthy private backers and that most of the funding for the project would be raised through traditional financial instruments.

Olivera is undaunted by the long list of challenges. His priority is for the project to be “inspirational,” he said. “The future of humanity lies in ambitious projects like this one.”

Expected to launch in 2025, the sleek luxury superyacht interior has room for 160 scientists and 165 crew members. VIPs can also stay at one of 40 luxurious spaces for 10 nights costing $3 million. There is also a helipad and an observation deck. Plus, underwater expedition vehicles allow scientists to explore the deep sea . A molten-salt reactor powers the zero-emission vessel.

A 300-metre yacht with green technology , designed for environmental exploration , will also carry activists and billionaires on luxury trips.

The ship , called Earth 300, was designed by superyacht specialist Ivan Salas Jefferson and his company Iddes Yachts and is almost 300 meters long and 60 meters high and can accommodate 425 people.

Earth 300 is described as a vessel “that will unite science and exploration to confront earth’s greatest challenges," by Iddes Yacht founder Ivan Salas Jefferson.

The yacht, equipped with 22 state-of-the-art laboratories and a “science sphere” on the aft deck, intends to carry scientists and students for environmental exploration for free. However, it also wants to open some of its luxury suites for wealthy tourists who can rent it for $3 million each for a 10-day journey—helping to make the venture profitable.

Earth 300 claims to be one hundred per cent carbon-free.

Entrepreneur Aaron Olivera, CEO of Earth 300 says he believes the vessel will help raise environmental awareness.

The vessel took six years to build and preapre.

It was designed for emissions-free sailing and will be powered by nuclear technology known as molten salt reactors (MSRs), however, it will at first run on synthetic green fuels until the reactors receive certification.

While the founders intend to provide spacious cabins, balcony and accommodation for staff to the rich, they alo want to provide scientists and explorers with modern technologies to carry out research and gather data using the ship’s equipment.

What is at the basis of Earth 300 is a vision: to unite scholars, scientists, designers, VIPs and people with many-zero heritage in an ultra-luxury journey with a very specific purpose, to save the environment.

How Earth 300 will work

The project of this incredible yacht boasts record numbers: three hundred meters in length by over sixty meters in width; Earth 300 aims to even beat the Titanic.

The surprises do not end there: the ultra-luxury yacht will be powered by a very special system; in fact, we want to resume a technology based on nuclear power, that of molten salt reactors (MSR).

This particular technology has already been tested in the past and then abandoned; Earth 300 will be completely carbon free and these reactors will guarantee low costs.

What Earth 300 will do

The primary purpose of this particular boat will be to raise awareness on environmental issues: the yacht will sail the oceans and collect data, do research and raise public awareness on the state of health of the planet.

From the images of the renderings presented, the structure of Earth 300 will be characterized by a particular sphere: this will be the real heart of the ship, a “city of science” declined on 13 floors in which thousands of scientists will devote themselves to research.
