Oday 240 (wing keel) vs Oday 25 (cb shoal)

  • Add to quote

Looking at both of these boats. Price is similar, the 25 is a '76 the 240 is an '89. Primary purpose: beginner sailor looking to learn and also take family out (3 little kids) for short(er) daysailing rides and chance to camp. We'd be sailing on Lake Sakakawea in North Dakota. Assuming most of you haven't been to ND but its a bigger lake than you'd guess. Thanks for any info and replies-loving reading posts on SailNet as I'm gathering information trying to be an informed beginner. Thanks

All things being equal, I'd lean toward the '89. Newer systems, more modern design. Yeah, it's a tad smaller, but not by much. I also think that, for your purposes, the floor plan for the cabin is going to be better for the daysailing. You should have enough room to get everyone around that table, which will be nice. I'm not sure you'll have the same luck on the 25. I think you're going to have a hard time getting 2 adults and 3 kids into either of those boats for an overnight, unless you enclose the cockpit and have some sleep out there (that's what my parents did on their 27' powerboat when I was a kid - I slept on deck in a sleeping bag, but it was fully enclosed). Be sure to test the cockpits on both boats with the full family out there. Make sure everyone can sit comfortably and not get hit by the tiller. Also, be sure you, or your crew, can readily reach the lines you'll need while underway.

I don't know the O'Day 240 first hand but there are a few O 25 swing keel models at our club. It is quite spacious inside the cabin and sails pretty well. Wing keel sailboats scare me a bit as they can be very difficult to get off of a grounding whereas the center board models have no problem getting off quickly.

I owned an ODAY 240 for a few years and I can tell you it is a great boat for doing exactly what you are looking to do. Any 25' boat will be tight down below for 5 people. But the 240 has a great floor plan with an enclosed head which may be the largest selling point. The standard roller furling for the genoa will make sail handling easier. It is a breeze to raise and lower sails. As long as your kids are little - say under 10 it shouldn't be to cramped in there. And the newer boat will give you a much nicer below deck experience. The interior on my boat only had some minor soiling on the carpeted headliner which can be easily cleaned with a carpet cleaner and a little effort. It can be made to look like a much newer boat. good luck with either boat.

Enjoy! I have great memories of camping on Lake Sakakawea as a kid. I imagine it would be great for sailing. A couple hundred miles long, ten miles wide, windy, and you'll have it almost all to yourself. One word of warning, the lake can have quite a strong seiche effect where the water level is higher on the downwind side of the lake and lower on the upwind side. I remember having to move the tent one night when the wind shifted and the water level came up by over a foot and started flooding our campsite. What this means to sailors is that on the other side of the lake the water probably dropped a foot, so if you had anchored in shallow water you might now be aground. Anyway, get a boat and come back here to post stories! I would love to hear some adventures sailing on Lake Sakakawea. (Also, I dig the 701 in your handle)

Taking a look at sailboatdata.com the draft of the 240 is just a couple more inches than the 25. OAL is a couple inches more on the 25. The cabin top shape is different. The cabin layout is probably what you need to decide on. One thing I noticed on the photo of the 240 is a lack of life lines around the boat. The photo shows bow pulpit and stern hoops. The photo of the 25 shows bow pulpit with life lines and stanchions. The lines appear to end at the cockpit. I know the 1980 25 has full lifelines and bow/stern pulpits. You might want to consider full life lines if your kids will be wanting to walk the deck.

Looking for advise on O'Day 240

My wife and I are novice sailors. We are looking at an O'Day 240. I don't think that there were many 240's built. Do you think this should be an issue and I should look at a different builder/model? And, are there any known defects or problems that I should be looking for? Thank-you, Chris

OdayDave

Shouldn't be a problem Chris, As an O'Day owner (222), I do tend to monitor the O'Day market, and it appears to me that the 240 holds it's value better than some of the other O'Day models. Maybe this is because they tend to be somewhat newer than other models combined with the fact that they are in somewhat shorter supply. Nonetheless, I have not heard of any specific complaints about this particular model (240 owners can comment on this with more authority). I would suggest you check the Archives and also the Owners Reviews in this forum for specific comments. I can certainly vouch for the quality of the 222's. Assuming this is the right size boat for your needs, I think you will be happy with the O'Day. Good luck! Dave s/v Hakuna Matata O'Day 222

Great Boat Chris: I am an Oday 240 owner and have been for 2 years. I can confirm that the 240 is a nice boat to own especially in areas of shallow water. I sail in Barnegat Bay, NJ and the 2' 8" draft allows me to cruse the bay w/out a worry of running aground. The boat is roomy inside and my wife loves the enclosed head! In high winds (15+), the shallow draft wing keel has a problem keeping the boat on course and there is significant weather helm. I have partially corrected this by taking all of the rake (bend) out of the mast and getting as much sail up front as I can. This can be accomplished by loosening the backstay all the way and tightening the forestay all the way. Also, if you do buy the boat, you want the main sail as flat as possible. Allowing a "belly" in the main greatly contributes to the weather helm. Other than this issue, this is a great boat. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to post more Q’s Bill O’day 240 Second Wind

Love mine... I've had my '89 240 for about a year now, and have no complaints. It is a responsive boat, easy to sail short handed, that came with a lot of nice standard features. It moves along well, tacks easily, points OK. It's alot like a comfortable dingy in the way it handles. Checking the archives you'll find references to weather helm...I have found that if you depower (reef the main, furl up a little of the genoa) it isn't that bad. I've sailed it alone in 25mph winds on a rough lake without issue. My wife enjoys the convience of the enclosed head. My now 15 month old son spent a lot of time down below last year (now that we're finally in the water I'll have to learn to handle a more mobile child). One of the features the previous owner really enjoyed is beibng able to trailer a boat with this much interior space. He took it to the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior, to the North Channel in Ontario, and some other nice trips. He and his wife spent a lot of weekends on the boat, and later with their kids. It is nice to be able to launch and haul it out without a crane, and I hope to take a few trips next year. Anyway, I have talked to a number of 240 owners, with few minor complaints.

The O'Day 240 is an American trailerable sailboat that was designed by C.R. Hunt & Associates as a cruiser and first built in 1988. [1] [2] [3]

The O'Day 240 design was developed into the similar O'Day 250 in 1996. [1] [3] [4]

The design was built by O'Day Corp., as part of Lear Siegler , in the United States . The boat was built from 1988 until 1989, but it is now out of production. [1] [3] [5] [6]

The O'Day 240 is a recreational keelboat , built predominantly of fiberglass , with wood trim. It has a masthead sloop rig, a raked stem, a plumb transom , a transom-hung rudder controlled by a tiller and a fixed wing keel. It displaces 3,600 lb (1,633 kg) and carries 1,200 lb (544 kg) of ballast. [1] [3]

The boat has a draft of 2.67 ft (0.81 m) with the standard wing keel. [1] [3]

The boat is normally fitted with a small 3 to 6 hp (2 to 4 kW) outboard motor for docking and maneuvering. [1] [3]

The design has sleeping accommodation for four people, with a double "V"-berth in the bow cabin and an aft cabin with a double berth on the starboard side. It also has two straight settees in the main cabin. The galley is located on the starboard side just forward of the companionway ladder. The galley is L-shaped and is equipped with a two-burner stove, an ice box and a sink. The head is located opposite the galley on the port side. Cabin headroom is 69 in (175 cm) and the fresh water tank has a capacity of 12 U.S. gallons (45 L; 10.0 imp gal). [1] [3]

The design has a PHRF racing average handicap of 231 and a hull speed of 6.1 kn (11.3 km/h). [3]

Operational history

In a 2010 review Steve Henkel wrote, "every year Sailing World magazine runs a Boat of the Year contest in which they pick a new sailboat from each of several categories. In the quarter century since the contest began only five monohull sailboats ... under 26 feet and with cruising accommodations—have been selected as winners. The O'Day 240 ... was the 1989 winner—the same year that O'Day, to the regret of many, ended their long participation in the sailboat market. Among the judges' comments: the 240's heavy weight and her long waterline for her size will give her 'punch and range that's often lacking in weekender/cruisers.' They also liked her enclosed head, large cockpit locker, and working galley, admired her sleek look, and felt sail and engine controls were within easy reach. Best features: We second the Sailing World comments. We also note that compared to her comp[etitor]s, the 240 has the most headroom and the largest Space Index. Also, the boat's winged keel affords shallow draft for gunkholing while giving sailing performance in the same general range as a deeper fin. Worst features: Compared to her comp[etitor]s, the 240 has the lowest Motion Index." [3]

O'Day Corp.

Founded by famed Americas Cup sailor and olympic medalist George O’Day. In the beginning George O’Day Associates was only a distributor for several brands of small Sailboats. Some were produced by Fairey Marine of England and Marscot Plastics in the USA. (O’Day took over Marscot in 1958 to build the RHODES 19.) Soon he became involved in producing his own line of boats. Among the most successful projects was in commissioning Uffa Fox to design the DAYSAILER in 1969. Eventually, more than 12000 of these were sold. O’Day sold his company to the conglomerate Bangor Punta (later Lear Siegler) in 1966. For a number of years, O’Day Corp. was the largest producer of sailboats in the US. Manufacturers ID (>1972): XDY.

June 24, 2023 - Wagner head says group standing down

By Helen Regan , Andrew Raine , Sophie Tanno, Hafsa Khalil, Tori B. Powell , Adrienne Vogt and Kaanita Iyer , CNN

Moscow mayor confirms "counter-terrorism regime" in city and declares Monday a "non-working day"

From CNN's Katharina Krebs

Russian police officers, traffic police officers and servicemen block part of a highway entering Moscow on June 24.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed that a "counter-terrorist regime" has been declared in the city, according to a statement.

"The situation is difficult. In order to minimize risks, I, within the framework of the operational headquarters, decided to declare Monday a non-working day - with the exception of authorities and enterprises of a continuous cycle, the military-industrial complex, and city services," Sobyanin said on Telegram . "I ask you to refrain from traveling around the city as much as possible. It is possible that traffic will be blocked in certain areas and on certain roads."

According to Sobyanin, Moscow city services are on high alert.

Russian state media RIA Novosti reported Saturday that security measures are being strengthened at a number of places on the Moscow Ring Road. A checkpoint with a grenade launcher and an armored personnel carrier was installed at the exit from the Moscow Ring Road in the Yasenevo area and vehicles are being checked, according to RIA.

Earlier Saturday, the Russian National Anti-Terrorism Committee announced the introduction of a " counter-terrorist operation regime " in Moscow, as well as the Moscow region and Voronezh region.

The counter-terrorist regime includes, but is not limited to:

  • document checks
  • strengthened protection of public order
  • monitoring telephone conversations
  • restricting communications
  • restricting the movement of vehicles and pedestrians on the streets.

The latest Wagner movements: Equipment of the Wagner private military company is moving across territory in the southern Russian region of Lipetsk, according to the region's governor, Igor Artamonov.

Lipetsk is the main city in the region of the same name, and it is about 470 kilometers (292 miles) south of Moscow.

Ukraine claims to have reclaimed territory from Russia prior to Wagner rebellion

From CNN's Lindsay Isaac

Ukraine claims it has taken back territory in the east that was held by Russia since it annexed Crimea in 2014.

According to military officials in Tavria in southeastern Ukraine, Ukrainian forces have captured "territories near Krasnohorivka in Donetsk" and are continuing to advance, state media Ukrinform reports.

Another Ukrainian official claimed that Russian forces had been pushed out of the area about a week ago, but the information was not made public for "tactical reasons."

Ukrainian forces claim to have taken the area prior to the apparent Wagner insurrection but only announced it Saturday.

Analysis: Putin has only himself to blame as infighting engulfs Kremlin insiders

Analysis from CNN's Nathan Hodge

In the years leading up to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, a St. Petersburg-based businessman named  Yevgeny Prigozhin  emerged as a canny political entrepreneur.

Prigozhin and his companies served the interests of the Russian state, advancing  Putin’s foreign policy  in ways that were both useful and off the books.

Prigozhin’s relatively discreet public profile was his greatest asset. He bankrolled the notorious troll farm that the US government sanctioned for interference in the 2016 US presidential election; created a substantial mercenary force that played a key role in conflicts from Ukraine’s Donbas region to the Syrian civil war; and helped Moscow make a play for influence on the  African continent .

All of Prigozhin’s activities gave the Kremlin a fig leaf of deniability. After all, mercenary activity was technically barred by Russian law, and Putin could always maintain that interference in US elections was merely the work of “patriotic” hackers.

And it also served Putin’s interest to outsource some of the dirty work of sponsoring armed insurrection in eastern Ukraine or holding territory in  Syria . Wagner’s existence was not publicly acknowledged, and some of  Prigozhin’s operations  appeared to be partly self-funded, with various shell companies staking claims to oil and gas facilities and vying for access to gold and other riches.

But all of that changed with the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. By giving Prigozhin free rein to raise a private army, Putin both unleashed the political ambitions of the businessman and surrendered the state’s monopoly on the use of force.

Wagner chief refuses to surrender after Putin says his actions betray Russia. Here's the latest

Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Russian President Vladimir Putin faces increased rebellion by Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin after the mercenary leader rejected surrender, calling the president "deeply mistaken" for saying his actions betray Russia.

In southwestern Russian regions, officials have cautioned residents to stay in their homes amid reports of Wagner equipment moving through the territories.

Here's the latest:

  • In the southwestern Lipetsk region: The region's governor, Igor Artamonov, has warned residents not to leave their homes "without an urgent need and refrain from any travel by personal or public transport," as they work to ensure safety in the city. Artamonov also said that equipment is being moved by the Wagner group across the territory. In Kursk , which borders Ukraine, Gov. Roman Starovoyt has plead with Prigozhin to "abandon his plans" to prevent an internal conflict in the country.
  • Movement in Voronezh: Following claims of Wagner control over military facilities in the city, Gov. Alexander Gusev has disputed rumors that military equipment is moving through the region, urging people to follow information from official sources, and asking the media to be "responsible" in posting information. Also on Saturday, a burning fuel tank at an oil refinery close to the city was extinguished. While the cause was not confirmed by Gusev, videos on social media have shown an explosion and fireball as a military helicopter flies towards it. Additionally, a munition that landed in the city during what appears to have been a clash between Wagner units and Russian forces damaged a number of cars, according to state media.
  • Welcomed by Ukraine: Some Ukrainian officials see the rebellion as a "sign of the collapse of the Putin regime." Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky tweeted on Saturday that Russia previously hid their weakness behind propaganda, but now the Wagner-inflicted chaos means they cannot hide it. "Everyone who chooses the path of evil destroys himself," he said.
  • Moscow sees support: Russian-backed leaders in four Ukrainian regions Russia claims to have annexed — the so-called Donetsk People’s Republic and Luhansk People’s Republic, the Zaporizhzhia region and Kherson — have expressed their support to Putin. In Russia, head of Russia’s Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill , in support of Putin, called for unity, asking Wagner fighters "to think again." In a call with Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the Kremlin said the Turkish president pledged his " full support" to Putin.
  • Global leaders on watch: NATO, the European Union and world leaders including from France, Kazakhstan and Germany, have commented on closely watching the situation unfold. EU spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Nabila Massrali told CNN: "What we are witnessing is an internal Russian issue." UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said they were keeping an eye on the events, and urged both Putin and Prigozhin to "be responsible and to protect civilians."
  • Meanwhile , Putin signed a law that allows the military conscription of citizens with a criminal record.
  • Missile attack in Ukraine: Ukraine’s air defense forces intercepted 41 Russian cruise missiles and two Shahed attack drones Saturday fired from the north, south and east, according to the Ukrainian Air Force Command, state media Ukrinform reports. In Kyiv, at least three residents were killed and more than a dozen injured in missile debris which fell on a 24-story apartment block in the Solomyanskyi district of the city, the Ukrainian Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko said on Telegram.

Ukraine’s forces will benefit from apparent Wagner insurrection, Ukrainian military spokesperson says

From CNN's Yulia Kesaieva in Kyiv.

Ukraine’s military will benefit from Yevgeny Prigozhin’s decision to turn his Wagner mercenaries on enemies inside Russia, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian military in eastern Ukraine told CNN on Saturday.

“The fact that Prigozhin took all his Wagner fighters into Russia now will definitely have an effect on our frontline,” Serhii Cherevatyi, spokesman for the eastern grouping of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, told CNN by phone. “They were the most effective fighters. Unlike them, the Russian regular army – which was defeated near Kyiv, Kherson, Kharkiv, Lyman and replaced by the freshly mobilized – are not as aggressive in their assault operations,” he added.

Cherevatyi said the withdrawal of Wagner forces from the long-fought eastern city of Bakhmut in May was “very demoralizing” for Russian forces.

“Paratroopers and infantry coming to take its place knew what to expect – they are going to the place of defeat, they have less armament than Wagnerites – and that battle-hardened, motivated to kill them, skilled Ukrainian units are waiting for them," he said.

He also said that his forces planned to exploit Prigozhin’s outsized presence in the media.

“All his messages where he talks disrespectfully of (Russian Defense Minister Sergei) Shoigu and (head of the Joint Group of Forces Valery) Gerasimov, some regular Russian army units, praises the Ukrainian leadership, voices close to real losses in battles for Bakhmut – these messages are all demoralizing,” Cherevatyi said.

Russian Foreign Ministry warns West against taking advantage of Wagner's rebellion

From CNN's Mariya Knight

The Russian Foreign Ministry warned Western countries against using Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin's rebellion to achieve what it called "Russophobic goals."

"Such attempts are futile and will not find a response either in Russia or among sensible political forces abroad,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

It said the apparent insurrection "prompts sharp rejection in the Russian society" and claimed that it "plays into the hands of Russia's external enemies."

"The adventuristic aspirations of the conspirators, in fact, are aimed at destabilizing the situation in Russia, destroying our unity, and undermining the efforts of the Russian Federation aimed at ensuring reliable international security,” the statement read. “We are convinced that in the near future the situation will find a solution worthy of the age-old wisdom of the Russian people and the Russian State,” it continued.

Putin and Erdogan hold call on Saturday

From CNN's Katharina Krebs and Mick Krever

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan speaks in Ankara, Turkey, on May 29.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday, according to the Turkish President’s office.

During the meeting, the latest developments in Russia were discussed, Erdogan’s office said.

Erdoğan underscored the importance of acting with common sense and said Turkey is ready to do its part to resolve the situation in a peaceful and calm way, as soon as possible.

The Kremlin also confirmed the call, saying that Erdoğan pledged his “full support” with Putin.

“At the initiative of the Turkish side, Vladimir Putin held a telephone conversation with President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan,”  the Kremlin said in a readout .

“The President of Russia informed about the situation in the country in connection with an attempted armed rebellion. The President of the Republic of Turkey expressed full support for the steps taken by the Russian leadership.”

Cars damaged by munition that landed in Voronezh, state media reports

A munition that landed in the southwestern Russian city of Voronezh during what appears to have been a clash between Wagner units and Russian forces damaged a number of cars, according to state media.

The munition landed in a parking lot in a residential complex on the outskirts of Voronezh. It’s not clear whether it came from a Russian helicopter or Wagner fighters on the ground.

"I was sitting on the balcony, drinking coffee, I was looking — people were pointing at the sky, there was a helicopter. Then — bang, I looked out into the yard, everything was in white smoke," a resident said, according to Russian state news agency RIA Novosti. “I saw smoke from the the oil refinery, then I went to look at the car."

The resident's car was damaged. Other residents said the glass in their apartments was shattered.

Earlier , RIA Novosti reported that a Russian military Mi-8 helicopter made a hard landing in the Voronezh region, and one person was injured.

RIA cited emergency services. It did not disclose whether the helicopter was one of those apparently involved in operations against Wagner forces on the outskirts of the city of Voronezh.

Social media videos show at least one helicopter firing at ground targets on the outskirts of the city.

CNN’s Uliana Pavlova contributed reporting to this post.

US and Western officials caught off guard by escalation with Wagner chief, sources say

From CNN's Natasha Bertrand

Members of Wagner group sit atop a tank in Rostov-on-Don, Russia, on June 24.

United States and Western officials are being careful not to weigh in on the events unfolding in Russia because of how Russian President Vladimir Putin could weaponize any perceived involvement by the West in the escalating crisis, sources familiar with US President Joe Biden administration’s thinking told CNN.

Officials across the administration convened emergency meetings on Friday night to assess the events, which unfolded so quickly that they caught US and European officials off guard, the sources said.

While tensions have been steadily rising over the last few months between Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin and Russia’s Ministry of Defense, US and European intelligence officials did not predict that Prigozhin would move to storm the Rostov region with his forces, sources familiar with the intelligence told CNN.

“It’s so hard to tell how much was talk and how much was real,” said one of the sources. “The tension had been building for so long without anything actually happening.”

A European intelligence official told CNN that the “temperature had obviously been building,” but few could have predicted what Prigozhin was planning.

The official said the West will be watching how this plays out over the next 24 to 48 hours, after which supply shortages will likely start kicking in for Wagner forces.

It is not clear to US or European officials how far in advance Prigozhin was planning the attack.

One source familiar with Western intelligence said it appeared that it must have taken at least several days to organize; another source, however, noted that Rostov is very close to the front lines in Ukraine, so it may not have required much forethought.

Moscow marks Swami Vivekananda’s 150th birth anniversary

This week, the Jawaharlal Nehru Cultural Centre at the Indian Embassy in Moscow, the Ramakrishna Society – Vedanta Centre and the Institute of Oriental Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences, jointly commemorated the 150 th  birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.

In his opening remarks, India’s Ambassador to Russia Ajai Malhotra dwelt upon the contributions made by Swami Vivekananda, one of the most influential spiritual leaders of the 19 th  / 20 th  centuries. The sage was a social reformer and a great scholar whose teachings influenced many across the globe and continued to do so even today. The Indian ambassador highlighted the message propagated by Swami Vivekananda that “service to God can be rendered by service to mankind.”

Other prominent speakers on the occasion were Swami Jyotirupananda, Rostislav Rybakov and Mark Mokulsky who highlighted various aspects of the life and teachings of Swami Vivekananda and their enduring contemporary relevance.

The Labour Valour Fund honoured Professor Rybakov and Swami Jyotirupananda with awards on the occasion.

Swami Jyotirupananda, president of the Ramakrishna Mission in Moscow, was the first speaker. He emphasised Vivekananda’s role as a fighter for the rights of the suppressed members of society in India. Jyotirupananda reminded that in India that April 15 - the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda – is celebrated not only by holding lectures and functions but also by holding charitable activities. During the 4 years from 2010 to 2014, special attention is devoted in India to helping women and children, as well as other members of society who are in need of support. Within the framework of the programme, children from poor families and orphans are fed, tended to by the doctors and given primary education. Another part of the action is the support of mothers.  There is also a moving exhibition of Vivekananda in train which travels from state to state.

Source: Embassy of India in Moscow

Jyotirupananda reminded the audience that Swami Vivekananda was the first person to suggest spreading the great Vedic wisdom across the world. “Scientists say that a human being is an economical and biological creature,” he said. “But this is not the whole truth. The wise philosophers even before Ramakrishna and Vivekananda spoke against it. The scientists say that they acknowledge the consciousness but they don’t understand its nature.”

Mark Mokulsky, Prof. and Dr. of physical and mathematical sciences at the Institute of Molecular Genetics, Russian Academy of Sciences, followed the discussion about Vievakananda by sharing his hypothesis on the connection between spirituality of Vedanta and genetic-molecular science. Mokulsky is very much interested in the in-depth interpretation of ancient religions. He spoke about a number of signs forming human genetic code and the mysteries ciphered in the ancient Vedic scriptures.

Kharma Bhoomi

Another eminent speaker Rostislav Rybakov, Indologist, Dr. of historical sciences and Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1994-2009, elaborated about the relevance of Vivekananda’s teachings to the issues Russia has to face in our day. Rybakov maintains that Vivekananda’s philosophy is very much on the agenda for Russia and Russians of the 21 st century.

He called Vivekananda a man that came from the future to teach people the great wisdom, and people are very slowly and gradually moving towards the understanding of his ideas.

Recalling the recent Day of Cosmonautics in Russia, Rybakov also quoted the legendary Yuri Gagarin who said: “India looks like a big human heart from the space.”  According to Rybakov, such an observation coming from the first cosmonaut shows that India represents the centre of spirituality for the world even at the sceptical epoch of scientific and technological progress.

Professor Rybakov believes that in the past Russia, which had a lot of things in common with India, has lost its traditional values. “Disrespect is one of the toughest issues that Russians have to fight today,” he says. “All kinds of disrespect. Disrespect towards people, towards history, towards law, and, finally, towards ourselves.”

sailboatdata o'day 240

Among the big problems of contemporary Russia, Rybakov singles out a lack of education, and, what he considers even worse, poor education; when a person has heard a little on every subject but doesn’t have profound knowledge on anything. This idea is intertwined with what Alexander Pushkin said in his famous work Evgeny Onegin about Russia’s high society in the 19 th century: “We all meandered through our schooling      haphazard; so, to God be thanks, it's easy, without too much fooling, to pass for cultured in our ranks.”

Rybakov believes that the only path to follow is to educate children from the youngest age, but not simply educating but imbibing them with moral and ethical values that will lay the foundation for their future view of the world. “The way that we need to go is lengthy, torturous and complex,” Rybakov says. But it is the only possible way.”

The finishing stroke of Rybakov’s speech was drowned in enthusiastic applause: “Recently, the French actor Gerard Depardieu has become an honourable citizen of Russia. But, in my view, Swami Vivekananda should become an honourable citizen of Russia, even after his death. We need him very much in our lives today.”

In Transit: Notes from the Underground

Jun 06 2018.

Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.

Subterranean commuting might not be anyone’s idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscow’s finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.

The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the city’s psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.

A Brief Introduction Buying Tickets Know Before You Go (Down) Rules An Easy Tour

A Brief Introduction

Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.

The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.

sailboatdata o'day 240

The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.

It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)

In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.

For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.

Facts: 14 lines Opening hours: 5 a.m-1 a.m. Rush hour(s): 8-10 a.m, 4-8 p.m. Single ride: 55₽ (about 85 cents) Wi-Fi network-wide

sailboatdata o'day 240

Buying Tickets

  • Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
  • You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
  • There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
  • Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218₽/ US$4), three days (415₽/US$7) or seven days (830₽/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
  • If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36₽, not 55₽. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
  • You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
  • You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Rules, spoken and unspoken

No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.

Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)

Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.

Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).

An Easy Tour

This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.

Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring,  Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.

1. Mayakovskaya.  Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.

Take the 3/Green line one station to:

2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.

Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:

3. Novoslobodskaya.  This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.

Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:

4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war.   The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.

One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station,  and change onto the 3/Blue  line, and go one stop to:

5. Baumanskaya.   Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.

Stay on that train direction one more east to:

6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.

Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:

7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.

Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.

8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.

Keep going one more stop west to:

9. Slavyansky Bulvar.  One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.

Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:

10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.

sailboatdata o'day 240

Jump back on the 3/Blue line  in the same direction and take it one more stop:

11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )

Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.
