Saona 47 catamaran.

The Saona 47 is a luxury cruising catamaran, a product of Berret Racoupeau Yacht Design. Marking its 40 years in production, Fountaine Pajot launched the Saona 47 with all the distinguishing features of the shipyard in April 2017.

Table of Contents

DESIGN – INTERIOR & EXTERIOR

The Saona 47 is particularly known for its characteristic multi-decks, offering three different levels starting from the flybridge lounge or sunbathing area and ending on the aft cockpit with an elevated helm station on the level in between.

The upper deck lounge of the Saona 47 offers great views of the sea and the sky along with the comfort of lounge mattresses and cushions. It is large and spacious and ideal for a family to relax at the end of a tough day.

The helm station of the Saona 47 is unlike many other catamarans as its methodically placed winches and lines allow two to three people to work simultaneously in peace without getting in the way of each other.  The helm seat is generously wide and comfortable so the helmsperson does not necessarily have to be alone. The station is also integrated with the lower part of the saloon which means that anyone working the lines or steering the boat is not completely isolated and communication is still possible. The helm station is large enough for all the instruments to be placed neatly with everything also being in reach. The view from the station is good as all corners of the boat can be seen with the exception of the aft port and the sails are also visible through the window in the bimini.

Owing to its large size, the cockpit of the Saona 47 can be termed as the main living area on the boat. It is spacious and comfortable, offering multiple sitting and lounging options. With the L-shaped settee surrounding a large cockpit table and a fridge for storage of replenishments, the cockpit can also serve as the primary dining area. Although protected by a hard-top bimini, the cockpit is airy and bright and comes with a built-in BBQ which is smartly positioned to blow the smoke away from the main area.

Lastly, the foredeck of the Saona 47 is spacious and boasts a long trampoline but it does not have a dedicated sitting area or lounge. The anchor locker in the foredeck is large enough to store not only the anchor but also other equipment and, along with the water tank, is placed in a way to ensure that all the weight is pulled back and centralized.

The Saona 47 integrates the saloon with the cockpit so well as to give an impression of one large, unobstructed area. Despite the cockpit stealing the spotlight in terms of lounging and seating area, the saloon is modern, neat and cozy. The light wood finishing on the furniture helps in achieving an open yet inviting ambiance. It offers spectacular views of the outside with windows all around and multiple, forward opening hatches.

The galley, located between the saloon and the cockpit, is large and L-shaped with easy and simple access to both the living areas. It comes fully equipped with a double sink, a microwave oven, a large gas oven, and a four-burner gas stove along with a two-tier drawer fridge and a multi-drawer freezer. The galley has plenty of storage space in the form of lockers but also underneath the floor, not to mention the island which also serves as an additional countertop.

The saloon itself has a comfortable, L-shaped settee wrapped around a table that can easily seat up to 8 people. The table can be converted into a cocktail table and can also be lowered further down to turn into a bed for additional guests staying over.

The navigation station is angled and its seat is integrated with the settee. The station is fully functional and takes advantage of the full-forward view offered by the windows for a peaceful, indoor night watch.

ACCOMMODATIONS

The Saona 47 is available in two layouts. The Owner’s version has 3-cabins with the entire port hull dedicated to the master suite while the charter version offers 5-cabins with en-suite for each of the four double guest cabins too. The master suite can be termed as the key feature of the Saona 47 as the space that it offers is unlike any other on a catamaran its size.

In the owner’s version, the master suite has a big double bed with access all around. The windows filter a lot of sunlight and the opening hatches ensure ventilation. There is plenty of storage space in the form of cupboards and drawers and the area between the head and the bedroom can also be used as a space for office work. The bathroom is unusually large with a separate toilet and shower. Although there is no door separating the head form the cabin, the shower glass and the toilet door do not let the need for one to be felt. The other two guest cabins offer a queen-sized bed and en-suite facilities each, making the catamaran a particularly habitable one with considerable freedom to have guests staying over.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

The overall length of Fountaine Pajot Saona 47 is 13.94 meters and it has a maximum beam of 7.70 meters. The unloaded displacement of the vessel is approximately 14.7 tonnes. It has a total sail area of 77 sq. meters and a genoa area of 52 sq. meters. The Saona 47 has a total freshwater capacity of 700 liters and a total fuel capacity of 940 liters, and is powered by two 40 HP diesel engines.

PRICE RANGE

The price of the Saona 47 varies from $850,000 to $900,000.

In conclusion, the Saona 47 is an exceedingly livable boat ideal for families who want to experience offshore cruising while also entertaining guests and living an upbeat family life. Its spacious offerings, especially the owner’s version, are quite popular amongst those who value leisure over speed and plan on spending most of their time on anchorage.

Saona 47, ultimate bliss at helm

Performance and speed on board the saona 47.

Let's start with facts: The Saona 47 can perform at 17kn with a 20 knots true wind speed.

Fountaine Pajot really optimized the weight to volume ratio on this awesome catamaran in order to enhance speed. And because the Saona 47 is balanced, she will provide you a thrilling sailing experience on every point of sail .

You will enjoy sailing her, as all is designed to feel intuitive at helm .

Conveniently completing the range between a 45' and a 50' catamaran, the Saona 47 offers great performance, generous space and allows short handed sailing.  We have to say Caribbean Multihulls' team has a bit of a crush on her since she was launched.

You'll spot the Saona 47 at first sight

You can't miss her! The design of the Fountaine Pajot Saona 47 is easily recognizable and her strong lines and overall design provide her an elegant look . You will appreciate that same feeling once on board, whether inside or outside.

While the outside lines are assertive, the interior atmosphere is soft . There is plenty of natural light inside thanks to the saloon panoramic windows and skylights, whereas cabins benefit from large windows and hatches.

Fun and relaxation everywhere outside

'Wow!'  That's certainly the most common effect amongst visitors stepping on board the Saona 47. She was the first of Fountaine Pajot sailing catamarans to offer such optimized relaxation areas , and has inspired the very latest models.

The surprising feature on this model is the large platform at aft , which is awesome for watersports activities, to sit or lay in just above water level, or even to lift the tender on or put it back in the water. You can even get the crew on board your dinghy before you splash it, making things much easier for many. No need to get the outboard off as the platform can bear the weight.

With a large sofa and two sunbeds, the flybridge is very spacious . Perfect for chilling and enjoying the view, accompanying the skipper, enjoying some reading while soaking up sun, having drinks or a snack, etc.

That's not all! Allowing three large sunbeds, the front deck is also a very convivial area.

Pleasant all day long, the cockpit is really friendly and practical. Opening seamlessly onto the galley, it is also equipped for great moments around the dinner table which can receive up to 10 guests and is sourrounded by large comfortable sofas. On the starboard side, you may fit a cockpit fridge, and at aft an optional integrated barbecue.

How is it to live aboard this Fountaine Pajot 47'?

Saona 47 cosy and practical saloon.

The whole of the catamaran interior bathes in with natural light and benefits from great ventilation throughout.

The galley communicates directly with the cockpit with a large sliding window. This corner also features an kitchen island bench which offers great counterspace and valuable storage.

Opposite the galley is a very large L-shaped settee area , which can be customized either with a coffee table or a dinner table, also convertible into a double berth. Facing the ocean, the chart table seat is on the end of the settee.

Luxurious cabins

In any of the configurations, the starboard side offers two double guest cabins, one with an island bed facing the ocean. Both cabins have a large window for a great view, storage, cabinets and en-suite bathroom. The forepeak can be fitted with a crew cabin.

Each cabin offers a great view through large windows and allows to open part of them and hatches for some breeze ventilation.

In Maestro configuration - Owners' configuration

The Owner cabin of the Saona 47 is just fantastic and lays in the whole portside hull. The en-suite bathroom has an italian-style spacious open shower and a separate head.

Quintet version - Perfect for charter

This configuration of the Saona 47 offers two cabins with bathrooms on starboard, and three cabins on port side. In the middle of the port side is an additional cabin for crew or children with en-suite full bathroom. Furthermore, the aft portside cabin has direct access to the cockpit for more privacy.

Fountaine Pajot Saona 47

fp47

Description

I recently had a look around the Fountaine Pajot Elba 45 , which is the smaller boat to the Saona – she borrows many of the features of its older sister, the Saona 47. How does the bigger boat stack up? She’s snapping at the heels of larger boats like the Leopard 50 and the Lagoon 50.

Fountaine Pajot like to develop their designs iteratively, using continuous customer feedback to loop back into the process. They share successful features around the fleet, and this philosophy has produced some very nice catamarans that are market leaders in their segments. For another angle, read our Saona 46 owner´s review from Catamaran Eight – this has to be one of the most detailed descriptions out there – a fantastic source of information for anyone that is interested in these boats.

The Fountaine Pajot Saona 47 is all about maximising living and entertaining space with an eye on performance achieved through flare at the chines (an old Catana trick). This model was designed by the team at Berret Racoupeau who have successfully created a nippy boat with bags of space. Don’t overload her though!

She is built with a vinylester resin-infused, balsa-cored hull and deck- a tried and tested method by this manufacturer.

The rig is pure Fountaine Pajot, with a big square-topped mainsail and an overlapping jib. The boom is accessible, although you might need mast steps for sorting any main halyard problems out.

The solent is easy to handle, but that big mainsail is best raised with an electric winch. The battens make for a heavy package.

saona 47 catamaran price

This frees up the huge aft area as the social platform for the boat, with sofas, sunbeds, benches and dining areas in abundance. Slide open the doors and you enlarge it even more into the saloon for an apartment with a terraza feel.

Well, we thought the cabins were huge on the Elba 45, but these are ridiculous. The owner’s suite is about as big as you are going to get on a boat under 50′. The whole port hull is taken up with a big double bed,  a vanity/office space, lots of stowage amidships and a forward bathroom with shower, big sink and an enclosed head. The starboard hull has a couple of sleeping cabins for guests, each with large double beds and en suite head.

Or you go for the 4 cabin version.

Climb up the steps to the saloon, and you are in a bright, comfortable room with big windows  for visibility. To starboard is a big ‘L’ shaped sofa leading onto a nav station to port. Elongated windows in the roof give you visibility of the sails and the galley is aft facing with an optional island. There is plenty of storage space on both sides

While you won’t be beating any performance daggerboard catamarans to the mark, the Saona 47 certainly holds her own against other cruising catamarans. You can expect to be sailing in the low teens in a fresh and she should comfortably cruise at 7-9 knots with the right sail plan.

The Saona 47 is pushed along nicely under power, and she’s easy to manouevre with those twin engines in close quarters once you get the feel of her. At 2,400 rpm in a flat sea you should see 8 knots and over. Use one engine and you will cruise at 6 knots.

The Fountaine Pajot 47 is one of their best selling boats, and I can see why. This is a nippy boat with oodles of space that will suit big families or 2 families cruising together on a charter. Your other option is to go faster with a performance catamaran – read our Outremer 51 review for example. The trade off is the living space.

Fountaine Pajot Saona 47

  • By Mark Pillsbury
  • Updated: November 8, 2017

saona 47 catamaran price

Graced with white-sand beaches, swaying palms and shallow waters teeming with wildlife, Isla Saona would seem the perfect waypoint for a cruising catamaran — say, for instance, Fountaine Pajot’s new midsize model, which actually bears the same name as the popular destination that lies off the southeast tip of the Dominican Republic.

The Saona 47 was introduced last spring during the international multihull show in La Grande-Motte, France, and it completes the makeover of the Fountaine Pajot sailboat range that includes models from 40 to 67 feet, all named for exotic, sailor-inspiring landfalls. Like its siblings, the Saona was developed by Berret-Racoupeau Yacht Design and FP’s in-house engineers, with interior styling by Isabelle Racoupeau. As a result, a distinctive look and feel — reverse sheer, flared-out hulls, stylish cabin top, and modern finish throughout — flow from one boat to the next.

Stepping aboard the Saona during the show, I was immediately taken with the light pouring into the saloon through wraparound windows, long overhead skylights and sliding glass panels that open onto the cockpit to bring the outdoors in. Later, under sail, I was equally impressed by the ease with which I could move around the boat, from transom to bow, up the three steps from the cockpit to the raised helm station to starboard, and up another three stairs to the lounging area atop the bimini, to port of the centerline. Better yet, the designers found a sensible way to provide headroom under the boom (63 inches) for those enjoying the view perched on the topside couch and sun cushions while keeping the gooseneck on the mast just 37 inches off the cabin top, so opening and closing the mainsail’s boom pouch doesn’t require the acrobatics needed on a lot of other cats.

On the day of our test sail, the breeze was light. Still, the Saona clicked along at 5.4 knots closehauled in about 7 to 8 knots of wind. The cat felt quite agile and the helm felt responsive for a boat that carries more than 25 feet of beam. As the breeze perked up to 11 or so knots and we fell off to a reach, the speedo jumped to 7.6 knots. For chartering, the Incidence main and slightly overlapping genoa (set on a Facnor roller furler) should provide ample horsepower for hopping along from anchorage to anchorage. For cruising, I’d definitely add a downwind sail to the mix and take advantage of the boat’s sprit.

The helm station, which can also be entered at deck level, is similar to the arrangement FP employs on the Helia 44 Evolution. The helmsman sits on a three-person bench, with the wheel and engine controls mounted just forward on a pedestal. There is a pass-through between the pedestal and the cabin top, where three winches (one’s electric to handle the halyard) and line-handling clutches are mounted. This lets the crew assist with sail trim but requires the skipper to step forward to reach the sheets — a maneuver I found easy enough to do without bothering to engage the autopilot, for minor adjustments at least.

Saonas are built in two configurations: a three-cabin Maestro private-owners model and a five-cabin charter layout.

In charter mode, the starboard hull has a fore-and-aft double bunk in the aft cabin and an athwartship berth forward, with en-suite heads and showers between. There is a single crew cabin in the bow. To port, a single-bunk cabin sits amidships, between two double cabins, all with athwartship berths and en-suite heads. The Maestro layout features an owners suite that takes up the entire port hull, with a double berth aft, desk and cabinetry amidships, and a head with a distinctive shower arrangement forward that’s set off from the toilet, sink and vanity by a fore-and-aft wall of glass. The starboard hull is laid out the same as for charter.

Topside, living takes place on a single level. There’s a forward-facing couch across the transom, with a grill and cutting board at its starboard end. The teak dining table and seating for eight are to port; to starboard there’s a fridge and lounge chair built in under the helm seat, with storage space also available for a life raft. Hatches in the bimini open to draw in the breeze.

When sailing, an RIB can be stored on a teak-grated swim platform that’s raised and lowered hydraulically between the hulls.

Stepping into the saloon, the L-shaped galley has sinks and a counter aft, with two fridges under, and a corner-mounted convection oven and countertop range along the port side. Forward of the companionway, there’s a nav station with plenty of room for charts and excellent visibility for standing watch while protected from the elements.

An island counter amidships provides additional space to work or entertain. In the starboard forward corner of the saloon, a coffee table is surrounded by couches that would be my choice for a perch to catnap when off watch. The interior of the boat we sailed had gray countertops and upholstery that blended well with the light-oak woodwork and white fiberglass panels. Other options for both colors and woodwork are available.

FP infuses its foam-cored hulls and decks to control weight and add strength. Bulkheads are glued and glassed to the hulls. The bimini is also an infused-and-cored composite sandwich. The boat I visited was powered by a pair of 50 hp Volvos with saildrives (40 hp engines are standard) and had a Cummins Onan generator as an additional power source. The price for the Maestro version at the time of the show was $570,000; add another $12,000 for the charter model.

The Saona offers good visibility from the helm, multiple places to chat with friends or relax in the sun, comfortable accommodations and a clean and bright interior. I liked it, and I thought that if it were in the cards, it would make a fine craft on which to visit its tropical namesake.

Fountaine Pajot Saona 47: Showing the future of the range?

Our test onboard the Fountaine Pajot Saona 47 catamaran

Under maxi asymmetric spi and square-topped membrane mainsail, the Saona 47 expresses Fountaine Pajot’s new character

Nothing prevents this (very) comfortable catamaran from romping along in a breeze

A good point for the ergonomics of the Saona: the helm station and the access to it are central to the spaces dedicated to comfortable relaxation

Lounge deck, beach club and other sunbathing areas all have their place on a catamaran dedicated to enjoyment

The access to the flybridge is safe and fluid and does not disturb the helmsman: a success!

Even in good breezes, it’s pleasant to stay up on the flybridge

A generous outdoor table for 6/8 guests. The cockpit refrigerator and the integrated grill transform this area which is well protected from the sun and the wind into a delicious "French waterside eatery"

An "urban chic" style in good taste, well designed and skillfully transposed into the marine world

The near-disappearance of the interior dining area is the current trend with this size of boat

The good quality Alpi cabinetry highlights the creative interior layout

The deck saloon opens wide onto the cockpit. The upholstery has been redesigned. Note the portlights in the coachroof ceiling which allow a direct view of the set of the sails from inside

The owner's cabin: you’re guaranteed to be won over!

The bathrooms on the Saona are particularly well-designed

Access to the bunks, ventilation and light have all been the subject of particular attention by the interior designer

The hydraulic platform for the dinghy (with lateral mechanisms) also serves to function as a beach club

Nice, clear technical installations, and an accessible battery bank

After 40 years in existence and nearly 3000 boats built, the Fountaine Pajot yard counts only two models at 14 m: the Bahia and the Salina. The Casamance, the first flagship in 1985 was only 13m! The Saona 47, unveiled at the 2017 International Multihull Show at La Grande Motte in the south of France, now occupies a strategic position between the Helia 44 and the Saba 50. So what’s it all about?

The changing faces of a brand and a range

Naval architects Michel Joubert and Bernard Nivelt (the fathers of the Charente Maritime 1 and 2 and the Louisiana, where it all began!) were the exclusive architects for the builder based in Aigrefeuille in western France for more than 30 years. With the replacement of the Salina 48 by the Saona 47, the Berret-Racoupeau team of naval architects are now the exclusive designers of the sailboat range. The Lucia 40, presented in 2015 is now the entry model in the Fountaine Pajot family, followed by the Helia 44, the Saona 47, the Saba 50, the Ipanema 58'and the Victoria 67. This list shows the significant growth in the size of the different models! Cleverly, the manufacturer has not given up on the 12m segment, but did give up the 36 footer! (forever?).  The market is showing a real leap in the direction of a demanding international clientele with large budgets. The conquest of image and more ambitious brand territory is translating concretely into more luxurious boats which offer a renewed interior design and avant-garde lines. The challenge already seems to be being won economically (sales are up), and the appearance of the Saona rebalan...
