Vitters’ launches 56m, Alea

after two years project 3083, alea has officially left the shipyard in netherlands….

Image for article Vitters’ launches 56m, Alea

Alea  has been in-build for just over two years at the Vitters Shipyard , the 56m yacht is designed by Mani Frers while the interior is designed by M2Atelier.

The accommodation is split between the owner’s en-suite stateroom in the bow and four generous guest cabins in the aft ship.  The wide beam of the yacht allows for a large aft deck and beach club. Two tenders will be carried on board, one under the tender hatch at the bow and one 8.5m in the stern garage.

Vitters wanted to and became successful in separating Alea  from its competitors with the retractable V-Bollards which complete the flush deck aesthetics. The three V-Drums down below in the forepeak make headsail changes easy and finally the submarine anchor system keeps the bow and foredeck aesthetically cleans as well as proving to be practical.

Alea  is the first project that has been successfully delivered since 2021, on average the shipyard has delivered on yacht per year, however as stating on the above graph they failed to deliver any superyacht projects in 2018, 2019 and 2021. Vitters have scheduled projects for the next two years.

The yacht is set to be launched on Friday 20th May 2022 and will then be handed to the owner just before summer.

Vitters 56m Sailing Yacht ‘ALEA’ Emerges After Two-Year Build

Following a two-year build, the 56m Vitters sailing yacht, Alea (formerly Project 3083), has emerged from the Dutch shipyard.

Mani Frers developed the sloop-rigged sailing yacht, which is made of aluminium and has an inverted bow and flush deck. With a lifting keel, the draught drops from 6.6 metres to under 3.5 metres for exploring shallow ports and harbours. At the helm, two carbon rudders allow for fingertip steering.

With gear supplied by Southern Spars New Zealand, a single carbon mast will stand 55.32 metres tall once completed. A 682 square metre mainsail and a 484 square metre blade headsail will be among her sails.

The yacht, which features a modern design by M2 Atelier, includes all expected luxuries internally. These include an owner’s suite located in the bow and four spacious guest cabins aft.

Other notable features include retractable V-Bollards on deck and three V-Drums below deck. Additionally, there is a subsurface Anchor system that keeps the bow and foredeck free of anchor operations.

The 56m Alea yacht has the capacity for a beach club and can carry two tenders, one beneath a hatch on the foredeck and one 8.5 metre tender in the lazarette. The yacht will be launched this week on Friday and will be delivered to her owner in time for the summer.

Vitters Shipyard shows off its 56m Frers Design Alea

vitters yacht alea

ZWARTSLUIS – Halcyon days for Vitters Shipyard! The Dutch builder of performance sailing yachts has unveiled Alea, a 56m (184ft) craft that took two years to build and boasts a mainsail that dwarfs the size of an NBA basketball court.

vitters yacht alea

The massive aluminum-hulled yacht was carefully freed from a giant build hall and placed onto a pontoon for transport to the North Sea port of Harlingen. There, the 64m (209ft) carbon mast made by Southern Spars of New Zealand will be installed, followed by sea trials. The Frers Design sailing yacht has an interior by M2Atelier.

vitters yacht alea

Project 3083 ticks all boxes of Vitters’ innovations. They include retractable V-Bollards for complete flush-deck aesthetics. The forepeak holds three V-Drums that make headsail changes easy and a very practical “submarine Anchor system that keeps the bow and foredeck aesthetically clean.”

The yacht’s wide beam creates a large aft deck and beach club. The yacht carries two tenders, one in the bow and an 8.5m tender (28ft) in the stern garage.

With Alea out of the way, Vitters will continue finishing a 59m (194ft) aluminum hull that must first be turned. That classically lined yacht is scheduled to leave the shipyard in mid-2023. As soon as the hull hall is empty, Vitters says it will start building a modern, 44m (144ft) sailing yacht whose delivery is scheduled for summer 2024.

The specs of that 56m sloop-rigged yacht on that pontoon are impressive: Alea’s lifting keel provides a draft of up to 6.6m (22ft); a ballasted keel weighing 41 tons; fuel tanks that can hold some 5,000 gallons, and a mainsail of 682 sq. m. How big is that? A regulation NBA court is only 420 sq. m.

To date, Vitters Shipyard has built some 40 award-winning high-end, performance sailing yachts. It excels in equipping them with high-tech gear that takes the groaning out of sailing.

Alea wins two Neptunes at the World Superyacht Awards 2023

vitters yacht alea

The by Vitters shipyard built sailing yacht Alea has been rewarded with two Neptunes during the World Superyacht Award ceremony in Istanbul, Turkey on 20 May.

One Neptune was for winning the category ‘best sailing yacht above 40m and the second one for ‘best sailing Yacht of the year’. Mani Frers was responsible for the naval architecture and exterior styling and the modern interior was penned by M2 Atelier. The judges were impressed with Alea’s attractive profile, uncluttered decks and sizeable beach club. Alea’s Exterior features a flush fore deck and a deckhouse that gives a fantastic 360 degrees panoramic view. The covered main cockpit with up/down side windows create comfort and shelter in all weather conditions. The wide and spacious aft deck offers plenty of space to enjoy the sailing and offers a comfortable lounging area.

In the back corner there is a stair located to the open transom hatch which offers an extended beach club. The modern hull, designed by Mani Frers, with the for Alea characteristic inverted bow and the widest beam at the back end of the yacht, offers plenty of space. The large owners en-suite stateroom including an office is in the bow. Three of the in total four guest cabins are positioned in the stern of the yacht on starboard. Due to her wide beam the entire crew area including cabins, laundry and professional equipped galley is fitted on the aft port side of the yacht. Alea carries two tenders, one crew tender stored under the tender hatch at the bow and one 7m custom made guest tender in the lazarette. The interior by the hand of M2Atelier, in close cooperation with the Owners, is in a contemporary modern style with great attention to detail. It has been an amazing achievement to finish the meticulously designed interior to the level of quality presented in this stylish and well-balanced yacht.

Alea embodies modern, performance characteristics while offering the enjoyment of comfortable living on-board. No compromise has been made on performance, safety and comfort. Therefore this yacht carries a complete set of Vitters techniques of which the efficiency and compactness is extraordinary for a yacht this size. Two main engines and two generators are installed for the propulsion and the main energy supply on board. Alea ticks quite a number of boxes on the Vitters’ innovations list. To mention a few; the retractable V-Bollards completed the uncluttered deck aesthetics, down below in the forepeak three V-Drums make headsail changes easy and, last but not least, the submarine Anchor system keeps the bow and foredeck aesthetically clean as well as proving practical.

The lightweight aluminium hull was engineered to the smallest detail and the extensive use of finite element analysis enabled the yard to develop and build a stiff and light aluminium construction, all in line with the naval architect’s concept.

Vendée Liberty Speed Trials

Vendée liberty - imoca yachts show off in new york.

Photo of YachtBoatNews

The wind gods only partially delivered for the NY-Vendee fleet competing in the Vendee Liberty exhibition speed trials on upper New York Harbor today with puffs of breeze deciding the fortunes of the fleet.

Battling north and south winds gave the 60-foot IMOCA sailboats some opportunities to lay down their rails and charge along the one-mile course in front of the Governor’s Island audience while others ran out of luck and slid along at sometimes pedestrian speeds.

Romain Attanasio, Fortinet/Best Western, from the first heat of the day sailed up towards the Statue of Liberty then foamed off in a big blast of breeze to capture the fastest run of five minutes and 55 seconds.

Even though the sailors are preparing for next Wednesday’s NY-Vendee transatlantic race, and are maxed-out with sponsor obligations and boat repairs, they see this day with friends and VIPs as a time to enjoy this moment in their careers and bathe in the Big Apple atmosphere.

“It’s like a dream, you take a five minute ferry here and just a dinghy ride from madame Liberty,” said Louis Burton of Bureau Vallee who’s daughter was trotting at his side today, a big smile peaking from beneath the brim of a familiar dark blue baseball cap with the curvy “NY” logo of the New York Yankees baseball team. “This time in my life to do that, I don’t know if will ever come back here like this. To live that with my team, partners and family, that’s incredible.”

The IMOCA class is building on the success of transatlantic and other ocean races originating from the U.S. East Coast by inviting the latest American talent to join the NY-Vendee. Rising ocean sailing star and social media phenom Cole Brauer, the first American woman to complete a solo around the world race this year. Brauer teamed up this week with Malizia skipper Boris Hermann. Her efforts to do the 2028 Vendee Globe is expected to raise the profile of this sailing discipline in the States.

“Bringing these sailors to the U.S. exposes American sailors to the structure and culture of French solo sailing,” said Leah Sweet, boat captain for Swiss sailorJustine Mettraux’s Team Work-Snef. “Those sailors move up a ladder in the Mini, Figaro and Class 40. The sailors, the technical teams, everyone gets excited. It gives something to aim for.”

The speed trials were also a reason to bring people from around the world together to share their cultures and ideas, and showcase these racing machines and the Vendee Globe that, through the stories of each sailor, inspires people to achieve their dreams.

The celebration of these boats and sailors preparing for next week’s transatlantic race back to Les Sables d’Olonne was in full swing on historic Governors Island as string music filled the air, cassoulet with duck confit satisfied appetites and panel discussions addressed the issues of our times.

Topics during the three round table discussions included partnerships in preserving our oceans, the intersection of art and offshore racing, and connecting the cultures and businesses of France and America.

Some of the top French chefs of New York were serving savory crepes and other cuisine, while famed music instructor William Christie who has worked with Baroque orchestras throughout Europe including in Vendee, France, conducted the incredible student musicians representing The Julliard School of New York City.

Today was a day to take stock of the fleet’s readiness for future races as it was the last gathering of the fleet of around the world sailors before next week’s NY-Vendee start.

“The level of our preparation is very high,” said Sweet. “She has a high performance background and she wants to embody that in her team.”

Mettraux will be sailing in her first Vendee Globe in November but after several Volvo Ocean Races and a win in the last Ocean Race, she is considered one of the top oceans sailors of her generation.

The sailors arrived at the awards shining in the sun as the breathless sight of the Statue of Liberty stole the show behind them. This was truly the last moment of relaxation as the sailors’ family and supporters enjoyed their time with them. Tomorrow and every day until Wednesday’s transit start, they will have their heads down, focused on details needed to make it back across the Atlantic alone. And a spot in November’s Vendee Globe is at stake for many.

Octopus - Fraser yacht for sale

Roman shipwrecks, bioluminescent turtles and other amazing discoveries made by superyachts

Superyachts have always had incredible potential for scientific research. Features that are native to superyacht design – including transoceanic ranges, air-conditioned interiors and tender storage – can actually serve a dual purpose. And owners are catching on. In the past decade or so, a number of superyachts have made meaningful contributions to the global archives, whether that's discovering a new species or uncovering centuries-old relics.

BOAT takes a closer look at the greatest discoveries made by superyachts...

Builder : Lürssen Length : 126.2m What did she discover? : The wreck of one of the world's largest battleships

At the top of the list is, of course, the indomitable Octopus . Under the ownership of the late Paul Allen – the co-founder of Microsoft and the son of a World War II veteran – the superyacht has contributed to historical records several times. She retrieved the bell of HMS Hood, a British battlecruiser sunk by German forces in 1941 and also served as the staging vessel for James Cameron's record-breaking solo dive to the Mariana Trench.

But her most incredible discovery of all was the Musashi , an imperial Japanese Navy battleship believed to be the world's largest – rivalled only by her sistership, Yamato. Allied forces sunk the Musashi during World War II's largest naval battle, the Battle of Leyte Gulf in 1944. More than 1,000 members of the ship's 2,399-person crew were killed as a result.

In March 2015, a team of researchers (and Octopus ) ended the decades-long mystery of Musashi' s final resting place. The wreckage was uncovered by an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) which had been programmed to sweep a sonar sensor along the undersea slopes of the Sibuyan Sea in the Philippines, where the ship was roughly predicted to have sunk. One kilometre below the surface, the AUV made the discovery.

"Mr. Allen has been searching for the Musashi for more than eight years," read a statement on Paul Allen's website. "Its discovery will not only help fill in the narrative of WWII's Pacific theatre, but bring closure to the families of those lost."

Alucia (now Odyssey)

Builder : Auroux Length : 55.8m What did she discover? : The first video footage of a giant squid

In June 2012, Alucia was the base of operations in the search for the Architeuthis dux , also known as the giant squid. A team of researchers set sail from Sagami Bay and underwent a six-week expedition around the Ogasawara Islands – 550 miles south of Tokyo and where zoologist Tsunemi Kubodera had captured some rare still pictures of the species.

The superyacht was equipped with a fleet of Triton Submarines, whose infrared and low light cameras were uniquely suited to the near-crushing darkness of the giant squid's natural habitat.

Fellow scientists Steve O'Shea and Edith Widder both made the descent but ultimately, it was Kubodera who captured the elusive species on film. This is credited to his decision to turn off everything electronic in the sub – including the temperature control system – and aim his camera at a diamond squid he had dangled as bait.

The mission was funded by Japan’s Broadcasting corporation NHK, Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) and the Discovery Channel. A documentary on the expedition, Monster Squid: The Giant is Real , was aired on the Discovery Channel in January 2013. It was the first documentary to show full-motion video footage of a living giant squid in its natural habitat.

Builder : Vitters Length : 36.9m What did she discover? : A bioluminescent turtle

Unlike the previous two entries, Dardanella 's discovery was entirely serendipitous. The group of scientists had moored near Nugu Island in the Solomon Islands to film biofluorescence in small sharks and coral reefs. But on 31 July 2015, marine biologists David Gruber and Markus Reymann discovered something unprecedented.

"They noticed a 'bright red-and-green spaceship' approaching them in the water during a night dive," read a statement released by TBA21–Academy, who funded the expedition. "Totally unpredicted, the discovery happened when the turtle swam into the camera's view. The pair were diving with a special blue light that acts as a fluorescent excitor with many organisms, transforming the undersea at night into a seemingly psychedelic underworld."

This was the first bioluminiscent reptile ever discovered and recorded – all the more exceptional, as the hawksbill sea turtle was and remains a critically endangered species. According to Reymann, the special blue light that had been so pivotal to locating the turtle had been "miraculously repaired" by Dardanella 's engineer just a few hours earlier.

Builder : Feadship Length : 44.7m What did she discover? : A Roman shipwreck and a rare species of red coral

In October 2019, an expedition organised by Cookson Adventures deployed a number of submersibles from the superyacht Harle in and around the Gulf of Naples. Their most remarkable discovery was a pristine population of Coralium ruburn , located approximately 200 metres beneath an underwater cliff face in Sant'Angelo. This rare, centuries-old red coral was historically pillaged for use in jewellery, with untouched colonies consequently being few and far between.

The mission, organised by  Cookson Adventures , also uncovered a Roman shipwreck and its spilled cargo off the coast of Capri. Specifically, a collection of amphorae – ancient ceramic vases used to store oil, wine, milk or grain.

"These deeper dives offer a glimpse into how Mediterranean communities were in the past," said Dr. Nuria Teixido of Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn. "They provide a reference point for the future, for conservation and scientific purposes."
