Transatlantic sailor runs aground off Cornwall

Pip Hare after completing a round-the-world race

Pip Hare's yacht ran aground in St Austell

  • Published 12 December 2023

British sailor Pip Hare has been assisted by a lifeboat after her yacht ran aground off Cornwall.

The round-the-world yachtswoman, from Poole, Dorset, was returning from a recent transatlantic race when her 60ft (18m) yacht Medallia grounded at St Austell at about 05:30 GMT, her team said.

Falmouth Coastguard said the yacht was successfully refloated by the RNLI.

Pip Hare Ocean Racing posted on social media that the sailor had continued on her way home after being refloated and in a later video post Ms Hare thanked Fowey RNLI and volunteer coastguards.

A post said on X: , external "After working with the brilliant volunteers at the Fowey RNLI and the coastguard, Pip is now back afloat and, after an initial risk assessment, is sailing home."

In a later video post on Facebook , external she thanked those who came to her help and said she wanted to reassure everyone that she was "fine and the boat is seaworthy".

She added she was "devastated" about the events in the morning and explained that she managed to "sleep through a lot of alarms and [yet] run aground off the coast of Cornwall".

She went on to say "as an individual and as a team we will unpack this later", adding she wanted to give a "massive thank you to both RNLI Fowey and the volunteer coastguard".

John Baxter, from Falmouth Coastguard, said the vessel had grounded on Black Rock as the tide was going out.

He said the recovery operation was a "good result" and the boat "wasn't damaged enough to stop it".

In 2021, Hare became only the eighth woman to finish the non-stop round-the-world Vendee Globe race .

Women Sailing in Vendée Globe: Pip Hare sponsorship search

Pip Hare

Sponsorship search leaves Pip Hare worried about making the cut for Vendée Globe.

Inspirational women in sailing.

In the wake of the Ocean Globe Race , where we saw women rising to the top and taking centre stage, it seems we can expect this trend to continue. Pip Hare, one of the only Female CEOs of an international yacht race team, and the 8th woman in the world to finish the infamous Vendée Globe Race, is a remarkable example of this. As a passionate and authentic spokesperson and change-maker, Pip’s plans to race in the 2024 Vendée Globe are entirely unsurprising. She continues to be an inspiration to women in a male dominated sport, and now as an older woman in the race for sponsorship. Pip says:

“More men have walked on the moon than women have completed the Vendée Globe. Which is all the inspiration I need to succeed”

Searching for Pip Hare Sponsorship

However, funding issues threaten to stymie Pip Hare’s plans to race in the 2024 edition of the Vendée Globe as her Medallia campaign threatens to hit the financial buffers.

Although Hare retains the support of main sponsor Medallia, both her team’s second tier sponsors have stepped back, citing ‘world economics’. Now she is seeking partnerships to take their place.

In a statement posted on Facebook, she said: “With 30 weeks to go to the start of the Vendée Globe Race, we are facing the reality of having to halt preparations if we are not able to bring funding to the campaign.

pip hare yachting world

“The final act is the big one, we have created huge potential and an incredible platform with genuine commercial value for new sponsors to benefit from.”

The 24,000 mile solo singlehanded race around the world starts in November 2024 and offers one of the ultimate challenges in offshore racing. The top teams generally have a budget of around 20m Euros in the year preceding the race and while Hare’s budget is less, she still requires substantial funds to undertake big jobs such as replacing the bearings in the canting keel.

The best marine intercom systems tested

  • May 17, 2024

The best marine intercom systems allow quiet conversation during all sorts of tricky maneuvers without breaking a vocal chord trying to be heard against the wind at opposite ends of a boat.

pip hare yachting world

I’m sure we’ve all seen or rather heard that boat that comes into an anchorage or mooring where there’s raised voices and “I can’t hear you” being one of the most uttered phrases, often followed with,  “there’s no need to shout…”

With the best marine intercom, there really is no need to shout.

Sena Expand Mesh Marine Intercom

Specifications Bluetooth/Mesh: Mesh Bluetooth Version: Bluetooth 5.2 How many can be connected: up to 24 Type of Control: Button Control Battery Life: 10 Hour Talk Time Intercom Distance: Up to 400 m (0.25 miles) Speaker Type 6.2mm Standard Speakers Microphone Type: Boom

Reasons to buy excellent clarity of sound,  sturdy build quality, expandable

Reasons to avoid Those with smaller ears or heads might find this headset feels less secure than one with a headband.

The Sena Expand Mesh headset fits snuggly over the ears, just attaching over the tops of the ears to hold it in place.

The headband actually goes to the back of the neck and simply acts as a spring to keep light pressure of the speakers on to the ears. The stay in place by clipping onto the tops of your ears.

The sound clarity is excellent and the simplicity of being able to talk with a normal, in fact, a quieter voice than you’d need for on deck normally is such a relief to the vocal chords.

The microphone can be positioned close to the mouth or further away and the foam mic cover does a decent enough job of blocking wind noise, but it wont block it all.

The open mic ability to just talk and be heard and have a normal conversation is so much easier than using a PTT system.

The headsets have volume controls too on the side so if you need to control that while wearing the headset it’s easy to located and adjust.

The Mesh  comms system allows duplex voice and multiple connections, up to 24 devices.

Crew-Talk Plus starter kit

Crew-Talk Plus Marine Intercom

Reasons to buy:  Clear concise communication tool which stands up to the marine environment, Easy to set up,  Can be expanded with additional units Reasons to avoid: Not ‘essential’ sailing kit, The fit feels lose

Could the Crew-Talk Plus be a key tool in keeping everyone in the picture and harbour manoeuvres harmonious? We thought we’d put a unit through its paces to see if this could be an asset to the cruising sailor or something better left to the racing set.

I admit I was initially sceptical about using a boat intercom system– right up until I tried actually using one onboard, at which point I became much more sold on the concept.

Clear, concise communication with your crew in moderate tones serves to remind us, not only of how often we need to raise our voice when onboard, but how inefficient shouting from the tiller is, how unclear those instructions can be and how much stress it adds to sailing.

It’s surprising how much calmer most situations are when you can talk in a normal, measured tone.

The headset plugs into the receiver via a headphone jack on the bottom of the unit.

Out of the box both receivers need to be paired to one another, with one unit designated the master. Each unit has two channel options on it, with the Crew-Talk Plus takes the shouting out of onboard communication, whatever the weather master unit paired via its Channel A to the secondary unit’s Channel B.

Up to four units can be paired in this fashion.

Straight out of the box, pairing took us a matter of a few minutes and even on a very blustery day the all-round audio performance was very impressive indeed.

A genuinely useful tool on board, particularly on larger yachts.

Buy it now from Crew-Talk on ebay
