International Tempest class

Designed over 40 years ago, this design represents well the genius of its architect, Ian Proctor. In the words of many in the forefront of small boat design and construction, it is the fastest one-design keelboat in the world. To this day, the Tempest leaves every current “sport” boat in its wake, its origin at that time was without a doubt, revolutionary.

The Tempest was chosen as an International Class after the prototype had performed at a series of selection trials in Holland in 1965. It completely dominated the racing and was the overwhelming first choice. As a class it grew sufficiently to take its place in the 1972 Olympic Games at Kiel, where twenty one nations were represented.

It is totally one design - licensed builders construct the boats from a master set of molds under the supervision of ISAF. It is not a dinghy with a keel stuck on, a criticism often leveled at it, but a boat, as is evidenced by the new Mark Two, in the mainstream of design aimed at producing lighter, faster and more responsive craft.

Those who wish to read more about the origin of this design and the trials for which it was requested may read more at this link .

In the words of the many who have sailed the Tempest...

... it is the fastest one design keelboat - period.

The ITA now has a charter boat which is based in Waging, Germany and you see when the boat is available and the conditions of charter by visiting the International Website

The Tempest is a one design two man high performance keelboat with a trapeze. It was designed by Ian Proctor for the 1965 trials for the new Olympic Keelboat, which it won convincingly.

The class has since progressed with the times, including a new deck and cockpit layout and changing the construction from GRP to a foam sandwich. In the last few years the rules have allowed a bigger spinnaker, longer spinnaker pole and the use of epoxy the hull.

International Tempest Class prepare for Worlds at Portsmouth

2023 Tempest Nats

Eight Tempest class took part in the International Tempest Class Nationals, recently hosted by Portsmouth Sailing Club.

Born Slippy of Jon Modral Gibbins and Colin Meadows from Ullswater YC were the 2023 winners of the UK Nationals held on the race area for the upcoming World Championships at Portsmouth.

The event was also a pre-run of the facilities for the class World Championship being hosted by Portsmouth SC and supported by Hornet SC between 19 and 23 August 2023.

The former Olympic class Tempest is a 22ft, 2-man, high performance keelboat with trapeze and spinnaker, which was selected for and took part in the Munich 1972 and the Montreal 1976 Olympic Games.

Entries are expected for the Worlds from fleets in the AUT, IRL, SUI, FRA and GER as well as the British fleets.

For the nationals Tumbledown Wind was loaned to a combination Royal Navy/Royal New Zeeland Navy Team, Dan and Seegar, who are normally part of an NZL Elliot 6 team.

2023 Tempest Nats 1161

On the Saturday the fleet raced on the intended area for the upcoming World championship, just to the East of the WW1 & WW2 Submarine barrier, roughly a mile south of Langstone Harbour.

This area gave three superb races out of the way of shipping and pleasure vessels.

Born Slippy with Jon Modral Gibbins (Ullswater YC) lead the way with three wins, with Tumbledown, Alegria, (now crewed by Charles son Andrew Hawkins) and Achtung Baby (Derek Budden and Daughter Caron Kirkwood) very hot on their heals.

Kaleidoscope (Liam Gray and David Nash) Whisky (Simon Hall and Cindy Gao) and Bearboat (Ralph Budden and Rachael Roberts) fighting for the positions at the rear of the fleet.

On Sunday using the Haslar Wall race area outside Portsmouth Harbour, another two superb races were again lead by Born Slippy chased by Achtung Baby.

Over the weekend the racing was very tight with 2nd 3rd and 4th places split by a tie break and 1 point.

The racing was sharp and bodes well for the world event in August, with the PRO adjusting courses and starting the next race start sequence within 10 min of last finisher. Courses were sharp with race duration and all deadlines achieved.

“ I just received my asymmetrical spinnaker, with sock and turtle bag, along with a new 135 Genoa. The entire process was simple and both sales and the design team were in regular contact if there were any questions. The customer portal was easy to use and lets you keep track of where in the process your sails are. Great sails, great service -Graham Edwards (Facebook)

“ We received our spinnaker and launched it yesterday and I just wanted to let you know how pleased we are with it. The service we received from your company was exceptional and the quality of your product is second to none. Once again-thank you.” -Daniel Jackson (Google)
“ we had good communication during the planning stages and the knowledgeable people at precision sails really got me fixed up good! The sails look and work fabulous! my boat sails better than it ever had! couldn’t be more pleased with the product AND the service!” -Fred Jelich (Facebook)

Tempest International

Hello all-. I have an O-day International Tempest. This boat was a basket case, but most of the stuff was there... I am missing a few things I believe... Of the most important would be the Mast Heel. I have the spar and most of the rigging sorted, but I would like to at least see a picture of the mast heel, so, I can grasp the engineering of design. I can't find a picture of one even.... I understand these boats are all rigged a little different, Mine has the Diamond spreader, and stays ... I don't quite understand how the mast partner works, as mine seems to have a compound lever attached to Move the mast? Maybe a Cunningham? Maybe its for keel adjustment... Anyway, I am not new to sailing, having owned compac 16, Norman Cross 37, sunfish, laser, Vancouver 25, Hobie 16, and walker bay 8'. I am just looking for the right person that is interested in sharing some History with me of this old boat.. Thanks in advance, I am in Livingston Texas if anyone just so happens to be close and wants to spend a weekend at the lake!

Pics of your mast partner with compound lever would help. For a mast heel suggest contacting Rudy at DR Marine DR Marine Product List to find out where you can source one.

https://usitalongbeach.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/The_Sandbag_10-31-10.pdf this is an interesting read if you want to know most things about an International Tempest

PXL_20210928_173559904.jpg

There used to be an International Tempest at a club where I taught sailing. I don't think they have backstays. You might want to have a look here: Tempest

You may have already reached out to these folks: Welcome I owned one for a few years then sold it to my dad's neighbor who's left it sitting on a trailer for a few decades. I'm headed that way this weekend and may stop by to check on it. It was a blast to sail, especially single-handing from the trapeze while flying the spinnaker.

Don't think you'll find any pictures of 4-trap Tempests. Do the Class Rules allow it? On 505's the crew on the trapeze seems to take the place of running backstays.

jssailem said: Nice work BigDream. No Tempest experience but the basic step you took seem solid. The use of Dyneema for the standing rigging is done to provide strong yet light lines to hold the rig aloft. Care is needed with all terminations. The dyneemais is slippery and requires proper locking knots. It also is susceptible to breaking when put under strain over a sharp angle. There are rounded terminals specified for use with dyneema that help to resolve this issue. Johnson is one manufacturer. You may get some ideas at riggingonly.com. This site discusses some of the issues associated with the use of dyneema and the nature of tensioning the line to address constructional elongation. https://syntheticstandingrigging.com/ The use of dyneema in running rigging is dependent on the task. Halyards possibly. The line size and slippery nature make control of the line at termination difficult. (tends to slip off cleats when tensioned). The small diameter used is difficult on the hands. Good luck. I am following your work with interest. Click to expand
