Buzzards Bay 34 Power Catamaran

The Buzzards Bay 34 Catamaran is a lovely and versatile power catamaran that can be used for comfortable coastal cruising, offshore fishing or beach hopping. Central to this goal is to have a hull form that can power comfortably through wind driven chop at reasonably fast speeds. Experience and research suggests that the best hull form for comfort under way is a slender displacement hull with a fine entry and full after sections. This provides a “hot knife through butter” kind of motion when driving over waves at speeds of 20 knots and more. Hull slamming is eliminated in most conditions, and the ride is very soft and pleasing rather than the typical bone jarring pounding that most powerboaters endure. Early test results of the first BB34 to hit the water supported our design thesis. Speeds were impressive with a pair of 140HP Volvo diesels, reaching a top speed of 34 knots, measured by GPS. A very comfortable cruise of 25 knots yields excellent fuel economy and a range of 300 miles with standard tanks. However, the most impressive feature is the way the narrow hulls slice through the waves without feeling them. The accommodation plan has a generous double berth cabin forward, starboard with a toilet and shower located in the port bow. There is good headroom in the queen size double berth and ample stowage in various lockers. A spacious deck house contains the helm station with full instrumentation and excellent visibility. There is a fully equipped galley with adjacent dining aft of the helm station. A large open cockpit provides plenty of secure space for fishing, lounging or partying - people don’t party on boats do they? The Buzzards Bay 34 Catamaran offers a combination of comfort, performance and fuel economy that's hard to beat.

Buzzards Bay 34

The GPS showed 38 knots over the ground — helped along by a 3-knot current. In the steep four-foot seas of Vineyard Sound, the Buzzards Bay 34 Power Catamaran didn’t pound, and the helmsman didn’t have trouble keeping her on course, but I suggested we reduce speed, as would most prudent seamen.

This remarkable performance is the direct result of good design. Chris White, of Chris White Designs, drew the Buzzards Bay 34 PC for Russell Hunt’s Multihull Development Inc. We don’t normally associate a top speed of more than 35 knots with displacement hulls, but that’s what White drew — each very slender with a fine entry and fuller sections aft. Chine flats, parallel to the waterline and running from the transom to a short distance abaft the stems, create the lift this boat needs to flirt with a 40-knot top speed. The chines also prevent water from climbing up the topsides. The under-wing clearance — the distance from the water to the structure between the hulls — is 20 inches aft and slightly more than that forward. Under-wing clearance is always a compromise. Too much of it cuts into the headroom in the house. Inadequate clearance causes pounding at almost any speed, especially in short, steep seas.

After we throttled back to 20 knots, the BB 34 PC tiptoed through the waves. In addition to her extraordinarily comfortable motion at this speed, she sipped fuel, getting close to two nautical miles per gallon. The 34 PC accelerated briskly from a dead stop, and because her hulls don’t have the resistance hump normally experienced aboard a V-bottom planing monohull, she stays nearly level. She tracked accurately, in head seas and in following seas, and she stayed flat in the turns.

Aboard this high-performance cruiser for two, the pilothouse/salon is the social center of the accommodations. The L-shape dinette on the starboard side seats five adults, and its seat base lifts on gas-charged stainless-steel struts to allow access to the stowage bins. Large windows give the occupants an excellent 360-degree view, even when they’re seated. The in-line galley on the port side is adequate for a couple who cruises from marina to marina and anchors out occasionally.

The stateroom’s queen-size berth, with stowage under, sits athwartships, a step up from the cabin sole, and a hanging locker snuggles hard against the main bulkhead.

After a day’s run to your favorite skinny-water cove, lift the outboards and coast onto the beach for a cookout and a moment to admire your cat.

Test conditions: Speeds were measured by GPS in Vineyard Sound off East Falmouth, Massachusetts, in approximately four-foot seas and 20-knot winds, with a ¾ load of fuel, a ½ load of water and four people on board. Fuel consumption was measured by the electronic engine-monitoring system. Sound levels were measured at the helm.

Buzzards Bay 34

Close-spaced, and with spilling tops, the nasty three-foot waves I ran the Buzzards Bay 34 through would have presented a challenge to most any small boat. But this outboard-powered catamaran cruiser so gracefully navigated the white-capped drumlins that they might as well have been gentle ocean rollers.

To about 40 mph, the Buzzards Bay 34 delivered a ride smooth enough to keep the most lubberly crew members from complaining. It displayed fewer foibles than I’ve been able to wring out of other cats. That is, it didn’t resist course changes when one hull was buried while locked in a turn, and I couldn’t get the deck between the hulls to slam or to “sneeze” visibility-obliterating spray. A tall tunnel and a ramped underbody forward are primary reasons. The cat does remain upright in turns, which takes getting used to if you’re acclimated to the comforting lean of a V-hull. A cruiser, this boat is intended to make time waypoint to waypoint, not to perform whiplash turns, so this particular vice is of little consequence. That the combination of outboard power, twin displacement hulls and lightweight construction (both improving power-toweight ratio and allowing for narrower hulls) provides outstanding efficiency is sure to blow cruisers’ horns.

Fit and finish are of the finest kind. The Buzzards Bay wears the deep luster of clear-coated Imron in lieu of gelcoat. Attention to detail is just as evident, as with the teak trim rings finishing the 12-volt receptacles. Then there’s the ingenuity: The pilothouse sports a power rear window, opening up the salon to the cockpit at the touch of a switch.

A “couples” cruiser, its salon is open and huge, housing helm, galley and a lovely lounge that converts to a berth for occasional guests. Down to starboard is the stateroom with teak cabinetry and a warren of built-in stowage. Down to port is an amenable head with a shower stall and designer vanity and fittings. Fast and nimble, boasting long range and luxury, this boat serves equally well as a day boat or a vacationer.
