Best Amels Yachts for Sale

Founded in 1918, the Amels shipyard has become one of the most successful large yacht builders in the world. Amels builds are among some of the most highly sought-after superyachts for sale and charter. Part of the Damen Group of shipbuilding companies, the shipyard is based in the Dutch town of Vlissingen, the third busiest port in Holland. The island town is known for its shipbuilding and has launched all manner of vessels from naval ships to submarines and transatlantic liners.

Drawing on the town’s heritage and skilled artisans from the area, Amels reputation for flawless quality is down to the highly-skilled team of experts in design, engineering and the highest caliber of craftsmen. Amels is a Dutch shipbuilding brand of true excellence and will continue to succeed, pushing the boundaries of greatness.

Amels Heritage

Amels was first established as a family boat-building business by founder Kees Amels. Located in a small yard in Makkum, northern Holland, the Amels yard went on to deliver around 100 vessels during the first half of the 20thcentury, specializing in wooden fishing boats and steel tugboats up to 65 feet (20m) in length. The second half of the 20thcentury saw Kees son, Wiebe Amels, move the yard with the view to building larger commercial vessels and coasters. The yard, which was located on the outside of the Ijssellake-dike on the Makkumerwaard, went on to become one of Holland’s largest shipyards. Seeing the private yacht sector taking shape during the late 1970s, Wiebe went on to diversify Amels’ shipbuilding skills to specialize in the build of high-value luxury yachts. In 1982 Amels launched the 158-foot (48m) motor yacht KATALINA, and the next decade saw several notable luxury yachts coming from the Amels yard.

In 1991, the Damen Shipyards Group purchased Amels, bringing the brand into its portfolio and keeping the name that had by then become synonymous with luxury yacht building. The shipyard remained in Makkum for the next 14 years, before moving to its current operating yard in Vlissingen at the Royal Schelde yard, which is now the largest yacht-building facility in Holland. From its two shipyards in Vlissingen, Amel’s offers both ship-building and refit services. In conjunction with Damen, Amels also builds yacht support vessels. The two shipyards include extensive, climate-controlled covered dry docks capable of housing yachts up to 650 feet (200m).

To Date, Amels has Delivered More Than 60 Superyachts, Including Many Ground-Breaking Designs

The Amels Superyacht Fleet

To date, Amels has delivered more than 60 superyachts, including many ground-breaking designs. Amels offers both fully custom-built yachts and semi-custom builds. In 2005, they introduced the Amels semi-custom “Limited Edition” series of superyachts to satisfy the needs of clients looking for high quality builds with a short delivery time. “Although they may be built on a platform, the client is involved in the design elements from the very beginning of the build so that each and every build has its own unique identity,” says Northrop & Johnson broker Joe Foggia. The Amels 220 and Amels 242 are the most successful of the Limited Edition models.

Amels largest yacht to date is the 272-foot (83m) HERE COMES THE SUN, designed by Tim Heywood with interior design by Andrew Winch, which launched in 2016. The 188-foot (57.7m) VOLPINI 2, the first Amels 188 from the Limited Edition range, is the world’s first Tier III-compliant new build and the first yacht with Amels Hybrid Power in the Amels Limited Edition range. Designed by Tim Heywood with an interior by Reymond Langton, VOLPINI 2 was delivered to a repeat client in 2018. Launched in 2018, the 180-foot (55m) HALO is a beautiful showcase of the advantages that Amel’s Limited Edition offering brings with a smooth, short delivery and her superb design by Tim Heywood with an interior by Laura Sessa. The 204-foot (62.4m) Amels Limited Edition SEA & US, designed by Tim Heywood with interior design by Andrew Winch, is the latest successful launch from the yard’s Limited Edition 199 range. From Wood To Steel

The story started in 1918, when Kees Amels started a family boat building company in the north of the Netherlands, in the town of Makkum. Along with his son Wiebe, Kees produced wooden fishing boats and steel tugboats, building around 100 boats over the 30 years that followed. The company delivered their first superyacht built by Amels: 48.2m Katalina.

Limited Editions Range Success

In 1991, Damen Shipyards Group purchased Amels and preserved the brand, as the Amels name had such a strong reputation for quality and great value luxury superyacht building. Amels was still based at Makkum until 2005, when it moved to the Royal Schelde yard in Vlissingen, the largest yacht shipyard in the Netherlands. Two years later, Amels delivered the first yacht in their Limited Editions series, a series that would become exceptionally popular.

AMELS 242 For Sale

The AMELS 242 yacht was designed by Tim Heywood and has quickly become one of the most recognizable designs afloat. AMELS, a Dutch luxury yacht builder is now constructing the next AMELS 242, which will be available for delivery in Summer 2025.

Due to the AMELS Limited Edition approach, the owner can select their own Interior Designer for completely custom interiors.

This AMELS 242 new construction project features an expansive 2,580 sq ft. dedicated Owner’s Deck with a spectacular forward-facing stateroom and spacious & light his-and-hers bathrooms. This deck also includes a refined Owner’s Office with separate entry, a French balcony, and a large aft lounge with shaded outdoor dining and a bar.

The AMELS 242 also features an award-winning Beach Club and folding beach platform starboard. This is an amazing place to relax, enjoy a sauna, hammam, Jacuzzi, hair and nail salon or massage.

Moran Yacht & Ship has extensive experience working with the AMELS shipyard. In 2016, we successfully completed the construction and delivered to her owner the first AMELS 242 Motor Yacht PLVS VLTRA .

First started in 1918, and becoming a global sensation in the luxury yacht world in 1982, Amels is located in Vlissingen, Holland; and has become known across the globe for the outstanding quality, luxurious interiors and great performance of their super yachts and motor yachts.

Amels Yachts are one of the World's leading superyacht builders, renowned for their superb build quality, comfort and reliability. Brokerage report: big slump in sales in July

Data from BOATPro showed that after an active month in June , July 2024's sales figures indicated a considerable drop in both quantity and value, with this month's 23 brokerage yacht sales being half the number of July 2023 (46) and about half the number from June (43).

In terms of total value, July saw €129.2 million of sales, which is just 30 per cent of July 2023's figure of €427.1 million and 26 per cent of June 2024's figure of €504.4 million. The average asking price of each yacht was also down against either of the previous months. The 50-metre Westport -built Hospitality was the most expensive sale (by asking price * ) at €27.2 million ($29.75 million), designed by Donald Starkey and sold with Matthew Stone of IYC .

Of course, a month is a short time in the brokerage market and the quarterly reports (including the Q1 2024 brokerage report ) give a better perspective on the state of the industry.

Price drops continued aplenty, but actually at a slower pace than a year ago. There were 44 drops in July 2024 with a total value of €29.3 million, compared with 61 in July 2023 with a total value of €42.5 million. The biggest drop (€5.1 million) was on the 58-metre Turquoise -built Petara , for sale with Edmiston .

There were 40 new listings in July, compared with 54 in June 2024 and 45 at this same point last year (July 2023). New listings totalled €546.2 million in value against €522.8 million in July 2023. In June 2024, the new listings value was 2.3 times as much at €1.268 billion. The most expensive new listing for this past month (July 2024) was the 89-metre Amels -built Here Comes the Sun , designed by Tim Heywood and Andrew Winch , asking €199 million, having rejoined the market with Ian Sherwood and Stéphanie Bosi of Burgess .

Other high-value new listings in July included the 68-metre Loon from  Icon Yachts , designed by RWD and Studio Linse , asking $47.5 million with Merle Wood & Associates. The average new listing price for the month was €14 million.
