Suva, the Capital of Fiji, was developed in the late 1800s and retains much of the character of the colonial period. Its many attractions include shopping, restaurants, markets, museums, and nightclubs. You can enjoy a walk around the central city area, which will uncover numerous surprises. A leisurely stroll down Victoria Parade you’ll see the blending of traditional, early 20th-century South Pacific buildings juxtaposed with modern high-rise structures. Towards the end of the Parade are the Government Buildings, which open onto Albert Park, Thurston Gardens, and Suva Point, guiding you to the architecturally striking Parliament Buildings. 

YASAWA & MAMANUCA ISLANDS

The Mamanuca Group  – a volcanic archipelago of around 20 small islands nestled within a lagoon, offers an ideal haven for sun-seekers. Here, an array of water-based activities awaits (Windsurfing, snorkeling, diving, sailing). Meanwhile,  the Yasawa Group , comprising 20 volcanic islands known for their rugged terrain, pristine beaches, and azure lagoons, captivates travelers with its remote allure. Situated north of the Mamanuca Group, the Yasawa islands stretch some 90 km in a roughly linear formation, providing a tranquil escape from the bustle of urban life.

Vanua Levu – Fiji’s second-largest island and is an independent traveler’s dream. Often referred to as one of the best-kept secrets in Fiji. Easily accessible from Viti Levu, Vanua Levu still retains much of its remoteness and isolation making it a popular destination for tourists who are looking to travel off the beaten path. The Ringgold Isles is 218 hectares in size and mostly uninhabited, an area that supports globally and regionally significant populations of marine turtles, humpback whales, seabirds, and reef fish.

The Royal Suva Yacht Club was founded in 1940 by the first Commodore C T.M. McGuire. The Royal Suva Yacht Club offers a complete range of facilities to boat owners plus social facilities for its members. They also host Game Fishing competitions and promote junior sailing.

The RSYC is a club promoting yachting, boating, navigation and seamanship. The club is open to the public although it is a requirement that visitors are signed in by a member. The club has a bar and a small restaurant plus facilities that can be hired for private functions.

Royal Suva Yacht Club

The current Royal Suva Yacht Club was built in 1948 at Walu Bay. It is believed to have begun earlier (possibly the 1930s) in the heart of Suva city near the old wharf at Pier Street before the land was reclaimed.

The Suva Yacht Club was established in 1932 but believed to have been formed earlier. It was formed by a small group headed by T.M. Mcquire, later elected as the club’s first Commodore. Members of the club were initially British officials at the time but later I-taukei and Indo-Fijians were admitted to its ranks.The first official race was held in the Suva Harbour in 1932.

In 1937 the first phase of the club was built in the heart of Suva City possibly around the present post office near the wharf. The property where the club is situated previously belonged to the Suvavou villagers.  Today it is State land.

The club was moved to its present location on Walu Bay in 1948. The first gala ball was then organised to celebrate this new site. Construction of the new site was completed in August 1948.

In 1949 H.M.S. Viti was sold to the Tasman Steamship Trading Co. and the ‘coat of arms’ was presented to the Suva Yacht Club.

His Majesty King George the Sixth of Great Britain granted approval in 1950 for the club to include the word “Royal” in its name.

In 1956 the club hosted the Biennial Royal Auckland to Suva Race.

In 1964 Former Flight Lieutenant C. Don Aidney who served in WWII became Commodore until 1967.  Aidney was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

The first meeting of the RSYC Fishing Game was held in 1974. In the same year, “The Dove” film was produced by US actor Gregory Peck and featured the club.

The club celebrated its 50th Golden Jubilee in 1982.

A celebration of 60 years of safe harbour was held in 1989 and the club also hosted the Auckland-Suva-Guam-Japan race.

A sailing regatta was held in 1994 as part of the first “Fiji Games”.

In 1998 the club’s sailors participated in a regatta in New Caledonia.

In 1999 the club hosted the Coffs Harbour-Suva race and the Auckland-Suva-Guam-Japan race. RSYC Junior Sailor, Alex Phillips, also won a silver medal at the Guam South Pacific Games the same year.

In 2003 Phillips’ team, called “The Laser Sailors”, won gold in the Fiji South Pacific Games.

In 2004 Vice Patron Robin Storck, a past commodore, was appointed as official historian for the club.

In 2005 the oldest living founding member Mr Hugh Ragg passed away at 100 years old. The 50th anniversary of sailing to the islands was celebrated the same year (Auckland – Suva race) The club also hosted the first President’s Yachting Regatta in 2005.

It celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2007. Vice Patron Cecil D. Aidney (the flight lieutenant who fought in WWII) passed away the same year.

In 2017 the current Commodore Peter Watts was elected

The Royal Suva Yacht Club (Suva, Viti Levu, Fiji)

Once we were secured on the mooring, we decided to take our dinghy over to the Royal Suva Yacht Club, a historic building dating back to when Fiji was a territory of England. It’s still operating today and would be our base of operations here in Suva. For this we would pay a fee and sign up for a temporary membership to the club.

To get there we had to take a somewhat long dinghy ride past a breakwater and through the marina, most boats tied up med-moor style as the facilities weren’t exactly modern. We found the dinghy dock was also on the “historic” side, but at least it was functional. Stepping off from the dinghy dock we could see a fuel dock, handy but not big enough for Legacy to get into. On the far side of the fuel dock was a very small boatyard and marine store.

On our side of the fuel dock was the yacht club, built around a well-tended lawn shaded by a lovely flame tree. On the lawn were a few scattered picnic tables and a large screen for projected movies.

The yacht club itself had a large covered outdoor seating area next to the lawn, then a few stairs led up to the indoor bar. Outside the bar was a nice walkway with tables overlooking the lawn. The rest of the building included a rec room with a pool table, a main hall for functions and meetings, a small office, and, most importantly, an attached restaurant. This was not a tropical-style building but rather an old British building, complete with British yachting memorabilia and, naturally, a photo of the queen.

The club also had a few archaic rules concerning their dress code such as wearing “sensible casuals” during the day and “smart casuals” after 6pm (does having a wet-dinghy butt qualify as smart casual?). And males were forbidden to wear hats in the bar. If you forgot to remove said hat, you had to buy a round of drinks for everyone at the bar. (I don’t think they actually enforced this as it would be mighty expensive on a busy night.)

After signing in and getting our membership cards, we had an hour to kill before the restaurant opened for dinner. What a perfect time to go sit at one of those tables overlooking the lawn and enjoy a Fiji Bitter (our then beer of choice). It was a lovely place to sit! This club is actually located on the outskirts of Suva, the busy downtown area a mile way; so the feeling here was quiet and peaceful. The surrounding mountains created clouds that tempered the sun, making the November air cooler and much more comfortable than sunnier areas of Fiji. We hadn’t even made it to the city yet, but we already liked this place a lot.

(Full disclosure: Because our first visit to the yacht club was both cloudy and late in the afternoon, I have used some photos from a sunnier day in the yacht club gallery. The beer overlooking the lawn was real time, but there was no movie playing on the screen; Rich just thought that big white screen would look better with something on it. On the few occasions they did play a movie, you can rest assured it wasn’t Sharknado.)

When the yacht club’s restaurant opened we bee-lined right in for dinner. As yacht club eateries go, this was a casual and very appealing place with a wide variety of choices on the menu. I tried the tostada I’d heard about. British though this club may be, some sneaky American managed to have an influence at some point because this was the classic American version of a tostada, a tortilla bowl filled with Lawry’s-type seasoned ground beef, beans, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, onion, etc. It was American comfort food and it was fabulous!

Of course they weren’t going to leave New Zealand out. In countertop jars, alongside the American chocolate chip cookies, were two of New Zealand’s favorite cookies: Afghans and Anzacs. Rich had acquired a strong liking for Afghans , and these were particularly good.

By now, even if we discovered we didn’t like the city of Suva, we could be happy living and eating at the yacht club. But based on some warnings we’d heard, we did decide to take some precautions while anchored in this harbor. They included locking up the boat when we left it, keeping the computer away from our open companionway overnight, and putting our outboard engine and dinghy up on deck every night. We have a place to put our outboard on the railing, and our dinghy actually serves as a cover for our forward hatch so we can leave it open when it rains. Suva is cooler than other areas of Fiji, but it’s still warm enough to warrant leaving hatches open overnight, and it sure is nice to have some cool air coming through that forward hatch even when it’s raining.–Cyndi
