Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Glenn Henderson is a good ol’ Southern boy, a Florida native who loves surfin’, sailin’, and Gators football, not necessarily in that order. When Henderson joined the Hunter Design Team in 2001, his first commission was the Hunter 356, which was an unqualified success with more than 500 units built. This year, Henderson has revisited the concept with the Hunter 36, and it’s interesting to see the choices that he’s made on this second-generation approach.

Rather than a wholesale makeover, it’s safe to say that the 36 is an evolution and extension of the midsize theme. There are lots of features that are consistent with the brand that have been carried through with this latest Hunter, including the backstay-less B&R rig with the distinctive, swept-back double spreaders; the folding wheel and walk-through transom, which maximize the comfort and utility of the cockpit; and the Traveler Arch with built-in bimini, with the mainsail traveler within handy reach of the helmsman.

The hull of the 36 has been slightly tweaked, Henderson said, to lower the prismatic coefficient and promote even greater stability and better balance. In practice, what this means is a slightly longer waterline with a somewhat straighter plumb bow. Henderson started his design career drawing quick, sporty, highly successful raceboats, and he hasn’t lost his touch when it comes to hulls that move sweetly through the water. We tested the 36 on a day of mostly light winds hovering around 8 knots. Upwind with full sail on, the boat registered an effortless 5.6 to 5.8 knots. Cracked off to a close reach, the speedometer topped 6 knots. The helm was light, and given the spotty breeze, the performance was excellent. On our wish list, we’d add a foot chock for the helmsman and a repositioned overhead bimini window for better sight lines to the mainsail, but both can be easily addressed.

On deck, there are lots of little features that suggest a notable attention to detail, starting with the good nonskid underfoot. The anchoring system is very well done, with a large cleat adjacent to the windlass to ease the strain on the rode; a dedicated bar over the bow roller ensures that the anchor won’t jump its mount and nick the headsail furler or pulpit. The cockpit lockers are enormous and well organized, with fiddled shelves and brackets for the emergency tiller, companionway slats, and other items. We were less enamored of the small hatches in the transom scoop, which seemed out of reach and somewhat superfluous, prone to immersion, and, in the event that they became flooded, potentially hazardous.

hunter vision 36 sailboatdata

As with the deck, the interior layout and styling have been modified and updated. This is a very big 36-footer. The straight-line galley of the 356 has been transformed on the 36 into an L-shaped arrangement that lies to starboard, adjacent to the companionway steps. To port, the aft-facing nav station is enormous; it wouldn’t be out of place on a boat 10 feet larger. Likewise, the head is big and accessible, with a sink/vanity in one section and the head/shower in a separate enclosure. There’s a V-berth in a forward stateroom (with a nifty louvered door in the bulkhead to open up the space when desired) and a large athwartships double aft (with its own headboard!). All in all, it’s a worthy successor to the original.

36 Hunter Vision 1993

IMG_5014

This 36-footer Hunter Vision boat has treated us well as a liveaboard/weekend cruiser on the Chesapeake Bay and the ICW. This unique boat with its huge aluminum tapered mast is known as a free-standing or stay-less rigging. No need to worry about maintaining chain plates and stainless rigging around the hull.

Great interior layout–

Over 100 sq ft of floating condo with large sky lights, giving the main salon a modern open feel. Toucan Dream is set up with solar (4 panels 100watts each) on the arch. Features enclosed cockpit during the foul weather events.

Reasons we are selling is the skipper’s health…...the daily demands maintaining the day-to-day sailing.

The main salon has U-shape settee (sits 6-8 comfortably). Also, the settee across (starboard) from the table sits 3-4 with space between guests. The galley stainless side-by-side refrigerator island, the induction stovetop, oven/air fryer works well with the upgraded electrical systems. Can’t forget the double stainless sinks onboard.

The salon table pedestal drops to make additional berth that sleeps 2.

Comfortably Aft berth with California king size bed

V berth that sleeps 2

Wet head, sink, shower, and Airhead toilet.

Congratulations! We bought a 94 Vision 36 in 09. We love it. We are in San Francisco bay area and the winds are quite strong. It's a tender boat in strong winds. However in light air it is fast downwind. These boats are very roomy. We reef a lot and the reefing system is a pain in the ass. If your reefing system has not been upgraded, plan on rebuilding the shuttle blocks inside the boom, changing to new smaller size reefing line, and putting some blocks on the sail at the points where the reefing lines attach to the foot(?) of the sail. Changing the water pump impeller is another pain in the ass, just pull the starter, then change your impeller. If you have the original aluminum holding tank, plan on upgrading to plastic. My next chore is replacing the fill hose for the diesel tank. They glassed a floor on top of the tank, squishing the hose which caused a leak 17 years later. It's a boat, there is always things to fix. Search my posts, they are full of info on repairs that you probably will be doing. There is another member on this site that has a Vision 36, Steve Dion. He will probably post to this soon. Oh one more thing. Be careful using the power winch, we tore our main raising it with the power winch. And don't run the winch for too long, it trips the breaker and it takes forever for the circuit to cool down so you can reset the breaker.

Visions I had a wonderful Vision 32 for nine years. Sometimes I wish I still had her, and if I downsize, it would be back to a V32, even though I love my 40.5 too. Since I don't have a 36 (I couldn't find one when I was looking), I won't bore you with comments, but if I were to win the lottery and build a custom, it would look very familiar to you. A free standing mast is great and you made a smart choice for your first sailboat. Welcome, and feel free to ask anything on this forum.

Well I have a slightly different take on the boat. I do not think it is tender in heavy winds. We have been able to run down wind in 30-35kt winds with a full main (no need for the jib). It is a handful but it can handle it. Not have shrounds makes the boat easy to run with and I would have a problem buying another boat with traditional rigging. The reefing system IS a problem, but it is workable and may take a little working with to get it right. I have taken a little different approach to the raw water impeller issue. I cut an access port into the side of the engine compartment and I installed a SpeedSeal to make the process much easier. I have not had any issue with the electric winch. We have had a problem with the original Garhauer clutches holding the main halyard. The early models only had single springs. I purchase new ones that have double springs, no more problems. By the way HV'36 owners, do you have an electric windlass? If so can you send me or post a couple of photos? Need to do something but not sure which ones will work.

Mike: Yes I have sailed in the slot. You may notice that 75% of the boats are over on their ear when you sail in that area! <g> Considering your 36' boat has a 54' mast, I think they sail well in a blow. That is also why they have reefs in the main!!! <g>

Mike: Just a thought! My boat was very lightly used (very much like new). The sails are in really good shape. You may have some issues with a stretched out main too.

Mike H, When sailing in the SF bay slot let your sail out to spill wind and of course reef both the main and job the same to balance the boat and do it early, which I am sure you do. This will eliminate the fear factor. I have a 480 sqft main and it is a thrill in 25 knots like I experienced this past Saturday. You can purchase a stack pack for your existing sail. If you are concerned about a stretched sail I would consult with a local sail loft or maker such as UK, North or Quantum. Steve Marina Bay Yacht Harbor D43

Mike: I did price out a stack pack type cover at SailExpo 2 years ago. They quoted me approx $100/ft of boom length. That was just a little rich for my blood, but I would really like to have one (just not for that price).

LENGTH: Traditionally, LOA (length over all) equaled hull length. Today, many builders use LOA to include rail overhangs, bowsprits, etc. and LOD (length on deck) for hull length. That said, LOA may still mean LOD if the builder is being honest and using accepted industry standards developed by groups like the ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council).

The Hunter Vision 36. Let's look at comfort. Hunter has done a masterful job of arranging this beamy (length to beam ratio 2.85) 36-footer. Just for fun, compare it with the Deerfoot 50. Entering the boat, you are struck by the wide open and handsomely finished main cabin with its wraparound settee and large dining table.
