Sailing with Yächtley Crëw

Sailing with Yächtley Crëw

Los Angeles area-based yacht rock band Yächtley Crëw have set sail on their 2022 Anchors Up Tour and will perform May 2, Sony Hall, New York City; May 5, URSB Carteret Performing Arts & Events Center, Carteret, and May 6, Tropicana Showroom, Atlantic City. Known as “The Titans of Soft Rock,” Yachtley Crew encapsulate the feel-good, chart-topping soft rock hits of the late ’70s and early ’80s. Gushy love songs, whaling saxophone solos and memorable hooks will have you unabashedly singing along and donning a captain’s hat of your own as you’re taken on a trip down memory lane.

Yächtley Crëw perform timeless hits by Steely Dan, Michael McDonald, Boz Scaggs, Christopher Cross, Toto, Bee Gees, Hall & Oates, Styx and more! As evidenced during a residency at L.A.’s legendary Viper Room, the summer breezy band bring fun and showmanship to their performances while entertaining younger and older audience members alike. Whether you’re hearing these songs for the first time or remember singing along with them on your AM radio, you will love the look of their thematic nautical suits and highly entertaining choreography.

Yet, fear not, ye fans of hard rock. The band’s name was inspired by none other than the infamous L.A. outfit Motley Crue.  Please enjoy the following chat with vocalist Philly Ocean and drummer Sailor Hawkins.

What is it about Yacht Rock that is so appealing to the band members and their audience?

It’s impossible not to sing along and feel good when you hear this music. There’s so much nostalgia linked to these songs, and so many memories. They’re iconic, and known throughout the world. And they are really good songs! One of the best parts about what we do is seeing two hours of smiles on our audience.

Did you enjoy this kind of music as a kid or did you gravitate to it when you got older?

Both. Every single band member has childhood memories of these songs, cruising in the car with the windows down on a hot summer night. But the really cool thing has been to rediscover this music all over again as adults, and to endeavor to play it like the original recording. Again, this music is feel good and timeless. It makes it easy to fall in love with this music all over again.

For those who haven’t experienced it yet, what is the best part of a Yachtley Crew concert?

It’s not just a concert, it’s a show. As much as we love Yacht Rock, we love performing just as much. We bring that love to every single gig that we play, and we have a blast doing it. We think that the best part about a Yachtley Crew concert is that everyone is a part of it. People show up wearing captain’s hats and sailor outfits. They come ready to dance and sing and party, and they leave having had one of the most fun nights of their life.

Out of all the songs within your repertoire, which do you like to perform most and why?

We are gonna have to go with ‘Escape (The Pina Colada Song)’ on this one. Every single time we play this song, the crowd loses their minds and sings along. It’s the best.

Have you gotten any feedback from any of the acts you cover?

We actually have! Peter Beckett -- the voice of Player -- has joined us onstage a few times to perform his classic, ‘Baby Come Back.’ Also, Elliot Lurie -- voice of Looking Glass -- has sat in with us too to sing his hit song, ‘Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl).’

How did Yachtley Crew band together and get its name?

Like many great things, Yachtley Crew was born in a hot tub over a cold beer. Our founders, Baba Buoy (bass) and Sailor Hawkins (drums) have been lifelong friends and musicians, and carefully assembled the band over a year of jam sessions to ensure just the right chemistry. Now we are one big happy Yacht Rock family who love the genre just as much as our fans. The name Yachtley Crew is a nod to our love of hard rock, Motley Crue, and we like to think that we add just a little bit of “oomph” to the soft rock hits we play.

The band recently renamed the drummer Sailor Hawkins in honor of the recently deceased Taylor Hawkins, and also in honor of him, you’re covering Foo Fighters’ ‘Hero,’ which also isn’t yacht rock. Why is it important to Yachtley Crew to honor Taylor in this way?

Actually, Sailor Hawkins has always been his name. The Foo Fighters’ Taylor Hawkins has always been a hero to us, and we felt it appropriate to honor him after his untimely passing.

What’s the most nautical experience the band has had?

Our most nautical experience ever is probably getting ferried out to Catalina Island to play at their Buccaneer Days event. Such a blast! Everyone dressed as captains and pirates marooned on an island for a weekend.

Column: Your endless summer is brought to you by yacht rock and Yachtley Crew

If you believe in calendars, summer is almost over. But if you believe in yacht rock, summer is never over.

“It’s kind of a made-up genre. But even if you don’t know what it is, if you hear it, you already get it,” said vocalist Philly Ocean (real name, Phillip Daniel) of the Los Angeles-based yacht-rock band Yachtley Crëw , which is playing a sold-out show at the Music Box in Little Italy on Sept. 10.

“It’s all of these easy-listening, feel-good tunes that go well with a piña colada on the deck of a yacht with the horizon off in the distance. Summer vibes are encapsulated in these songs.”

It will never be recognized by the Grammys, but yacht rock has become a pop-culturally accepted category for the semi-fizzy, sorta-jazzy soft-pop songs that ruled the charts in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. Songs like Christopher Cross’ “Ride Like the Wind,” the Doobie Brothers’ “What a Fool Believes,” and every track on Steely Dan’s “Aja” album.

Donald Fagen, left, and Walter Becker of Steely Dan

But before it became a streaming-radio format, a brunch inspiration and the genesis of tribute bands with names like Yachty by Nature and Monsters of Yacht, yacht rock was a web series.

Created in 2005 by actors J.D. Ryznar and Hunter Stair, “Yacht Rock” was a deliberately cheesy, yet totally appreciative “mockumentary” series following the fictional lives and careers of such future yacht-rock heroes as Hall & Oates, Kenny Loggins and the Michael McDonald-era Doobie Brothers.

Once the series made its way to YouTube, it tickled the fancies of industry types who realized that re-branding soft rock as yacht rock could give these oldies new, hipster-approved life. Satellite- and streaming-radio stations began adding yacht-rock channels, and by 2016, these smooth tunes had made their way to the musicians who formed Yachtley Crëw.

According to Yachtley lore, the two veteran Los Angeles musicians who would go by the names of Sailor Hawkins (drums) and Baba Buoy (bass) were hanging out in a hot tub with their wives (“Probably drinking,” Ocean surmised), when they heard a satellite-radio yacht-rock station and had an epiphany.

One year later, they had a band.

“They thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be great to have a band and play just this music?,’” Ocean said. “When we would go around pitching to venues, club owners would look at us sideways like, ‘You play Christopher Cross? Who is going to listen to that on a Friday night?’ We would always say, ‘Just give us a shot.’”

Veteran soul and rock singer Michael McDonald is photographed at the Rose Cafe in Santa Barbara on April 19, 2017.

Four years and many Christopher Cross tunes later, Yachtley Crëw is playing sold-out shows in venues all over California and beyond; Ocean is singing to passionate crowds who know every word to Boz Scaggs’ “Lido Shuffle” and Jackson Browne’s “Somebody’s Baby”; and the genre started out as a goof has turned out to be a real happy thing.

And that is no joke.

“I think these songs have lasted because they are of the highest quality. The musicianship, the melodies, the lyrics, that is what has given them a long life and caused them to come back around,” Ocean said. “There is a zest for life that you can experience in every single one of these songs. They just make you feel good.”

Yachtley Crëw’s Sept. 10 show at the Music Box is sold out, but there are plenty of other ways to get your yacht-rock fix. Fire up the blender, crank up the tunes, and it will be smooth summer sailing all year long.

Streaming and satellite radio: Whether it’s Spotify’s 11-hour playlist or the stations curated by SiriusXM satellite radio and the LiveXLive streaming service, yacht rock’s non-stop happy hour is just a click away. Because they have a lot of digital space to fill, programmers have expanded the yacht universe to include such genre-questionable crew members as Van Morrison, Tommy Tutone and Eddie Money, but after a few umbrella drinks and a nap, it’s all good, matey.

Slate’s “Hit Parade” podcast: On his two-part “What a Fool Believes” episode, chart analyst and “Hit Parade” host Chris Molanphy gives the yacht-rock genre the thorough, musically astute analysis it deserves. We hear how its shiny roots stretch back to the legendary group of L.A. studio musicians known as the Wrecking Crew; how the sessions for Boz Scaggs’ “Silk Degrees” album are responsible for the existence of Toto; how Toto shaped Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” (It’s true!); and why the aforementioned “Aja” album set the itinerary for the stylish radio adventures that followed. Enlightenment, ahoy!

“Classic Albums: Steely Dan’s ‘Aja’”: Without this landmark 1977 album, there might be no yacht rock today. And without this 1999 episode of VH1’s essential “Classic Albums” series , we wouldn’t know the control-freaky lengths Steely Dan masterminds Walter Becker and Donald Fagen went to in their effort to achieve such glossy, effortless perfection. We also wouldn’t get to see guitarist Jay Graydon unfurl that classically casual “Peg” solo or watch Michael McDonald nailing those sweet, sweet layer-cake harmonies. You can stream it on IMDb TV with irritating, randomly placed commercials, or you can purchase the DVD and immerse yourself as yacht-rock nature intended. Don’t forget your snorkel.

Yachtley Crew is Southern California’s first-class tribute to the best soft rock of the 70s and 80s.

yachtley crew members real names

What exactly is “yacht rock”?

DS:   Yacht rock is a sub-category of the highly polished brand of soft rock that emanated from Southern California during the late ’70s and early ’80s. The term is meant to suggest the kind of smooth, mellow music that early yuppies likely enjoyed while sipping champagne and partying on their yachts. Somewhere along the way, it was also once referred to as “west coast rock”.

How did the band get started?

Philly Ocean – Lead vocals. Front man extraordinaire and Captain of this Yächtley Crëw. His voice has tamed the sea herself, leaving only jealous pirates in his wake.

David Buoy – Percussion, vocals and on stage instigator.  Former major label recording artist, played in several other bands over his long career. Keep an eye out, or he may just make you walk the plank.

Tommy Buoy – Lead Guitar and vocals. Standing at 6 feet 5 inches, Tommy is the smoothest giant ever to don a captain’s hat.  His baritone vocals and velvety guitar solos are as cool as the ocean breeze.

Baba Buoy – Bass guitar and vocals. Having participated in many successful touring acts throughout his historical music career,Baba’s  bass playing is the wind that blows  the Crew’s  sails.

Sailor Hawkins – Drums and vocals. Sailor began his drumming career in 7th grade and shortly after graduating high school, he recorded and toured the U.S. and Europe for a number of successful major label bands. Sitting at the helm, his meticulous rhythms steer the Yachtley Crew from port to port.

Pauly Shores – Saxophone and vocals. Holding steady at the bow, mesmerizing audiences with acrobatic leaps  from bar top to bar stool and across the stages  of SoCal while soloing all along, Pauly’s  style is indicative of some of the smoothest sax lines ever played during  the 70s and 80s.

Stoney Shores – Keyboards and vocals. Lingering at the stern, he’ll tickle your fancy while tickling the keys as stage lights and the night stars twinkle in your eyes.

Yächtley Crëw rides like the wind to make you free again at local show

yachtley crew members real names

It's almost like Gerry Rafferty, Rupert Holmes, Robbie Dupree, Billy Ocean and England Dan & John Ford Coley are all coming to town −to play at the exact same concert −their most smash-hit song, and nothing else.

Throw in some Player, a little Ace and a helping of 10cc, and we're talking about a sure-to-be smooth-sailing show by Yächtley Crëw.

Billing themselves as the "Titans of Soft Rock," Yächtley Crëw will get spectators loudly singing along with “Brandy (You're a Fine Girl") and “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)," plus kindred spirits songs by multiple-hit artists as lofty as Kenny Loggins, Christopher Cross, Toto, Steely Dan and Hall & Oates.

Yächtley Crëw's upcoming shows are April 28, Ardmore Music Hall, Ardmore, Pennsylvania; April 29, The Vine at Del Lago Resort, Waterloo, New York; April 30, Jergel's Rhythm Grill, Warrendale, Pennsylvania.; May 2, Sony Hall, New York City; May 4, Beacon Theatre; Hopewell, Virginia; May 5, Carteret Performing Arts Center, Carteret, New Jersey; and May 6, Tropicana Showroom, Atlantic City, New Jersey.

The California band delivers a fun but earnest tribute to yacht rock, a genre that saw its popularity multiply during the pandemic, as sort-of comfort food for people who grew up with 1970s and early-1980s soft rock.

"It's nostalgia and some of the most brilliant songwriters and best songs out there," Yächtley Crëw vocalist Philly Ocean said. "They capture an era, but it's also an attitude and a feeling, that maybe more than ever now, people need.

"I'm pleasantly surprised by how positively people have responded to what we're doing," he said. "I think that was amplified during the pandemic when live music had shut down. Seems now it's bigger than ever. We feel humbled in so many ways."

Yes, his six-man band wears matching stage uniforms of boat captain hats, sunglasses and blue blazers, but this isn't a Spinal Tap-ish spoof.

"We care about this music very much and bring energy and passion to this," Ocean said in an April 12 phone interview.

"Our goal is to make everyone who leaves the show think, 'Man, that's one of the best shows I've ever seen.' It's about how we perform these songs. Our goal is really to play these songs as true to the originals. People don't come to hear us do our own renditions. They're not looking for artistic interpretation. They want to hear us play versions as close to the originals they know. Because people want to sing along.

"I'm sure we've all seen a concert where an artist does an alt- version of their hit song, and you might think that's good, it's cool. But can you sing along to an alt-version?" Ocean said. "We play it like you remember it from some of the best musicians in history, bar none. And it's a show of hits. Every single song we play is a hit."

For those unfamiliar with the concept, '‘yacht rock'’ is a fairly recently coined term for the revival of the soft rock and top-shelf hits of the late '70s to the early '80s. The Yächtley Crëw website concedes much of it is overwrought story-driven narrative, but the music itself remains a treat.

"Some people call it Guilty Pleasure music," Ocean said. "We promise you'll know every song we play. You might not recognize the beginning of a few if you haven't heard them in 30 years, but once the chorus hits, you'll recognize it and be singing right along."

Insisting "We're not characters, we're personas," Ocean is joined on stage by Baba Buoy, bass guitar; Pauly Shores on sax, Tommy Buoy on guitar, Stoney Shores on keyboards, and Sailor Hawkins on drums. The drummer's name is an homage to the late-Taylor Hawkins of Foo Fighters, who Yächtley Crëw now honors with a cover of "Hero."

Yächtley Crëw members are in the same age group, first exposed to this meticulously produced, male-dominated genre as kids.

Ocean recalls riding in his dad's Chevrolet Beretta.

"He'd have the classic-rock radio station on, playing Toto and Steely Dan and Hall & Oates," he said.

Those musical stalwarts became inspirations, as did yacht rock vocalists like Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins "who has a voice that's unparalleled," Ocean said.

Like any good genre, debates emerge as to who should or shouldn't qualify.

"We do 'Crazy Little Thing Called Love' by Queen, which is not yacht rock band," Ocean said. "The basic definition is soft rock, but we take our freedoms with it as all bands do. Just like a heavy metal band will put out a ballad.

"You know, it's very subjective. I define (yacht rock) as a feeling," he said. "Just imagine you're on a yacht, and what music is playing as you're just floating on the ocean or taking a swim before Jeeves brings you a tray of caviar. There's a freedom when you listen to it. It's all about love and having a good time. Memories of life moments are very specific to these songs."

Some acts are bona fide yacht rock for only part of their existence.

"Early Hall & Oates, like 'When The Morning Comes,' isn't necessarily yacht rock, but 'You Make My Dreams Come True' is," Ocean said. "It's a moment in time; it's when a song came out, but it's also about how it was produced and the elements of that song. It even comes down to the songwriting. But I'm very open to what people want to say is yacht rock. Like Billy Joel in the early '80s − 'Just The Way You Are' is in our set.

Does yacht rock have its own "Stairway to Heaven" stature song?

Maybe "Baker Street" by Gerry Rafferty, Boz Scaggs' "Lido Shuffle," Christopher Cross' "Ride Like The Wind," or Kenny Loggins' "Heart to Heart," Ocean said.

"And then you can start getting into deep cuts like "Thunder Island," and "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)". These are all songs from that genre."

More: Revisit the classic Genesis with Steve Hackett

Pivoting like many bands did during the pandemic, by performing drive-in theater concerts and connecting with fans via music videos, Yächtley Crëw is excited to get back in front of live audiences.

"Like we're playing Jergel's again, and could not be more excited. It's almost sold out, which is pretty amazing for a band from California only playing there for the second time," Ocean said. "And we're adding shows all the time, like Atlantic City.

"The whole point of the show is to have fun," he said. "And we love to meet everyone, so come say hi afterward."

On a course for adventure, Yächtley Crëw to premiere at Palms

L.A.-based Yächtley Crëw is bringing its 34-city tour to Las Vegas. Expect expert musicianship and high energy on Kaos’ high seas.

John Katsilometes

It would be tempting to describe Yächtley Crëw simply as a cover band. But it is more. It is a trend-setter, a movement, an ocean spray to the face during the torrid summer months.

Beating the heat while keeping the beat, Yächtley Crëw makes its Las Vegas premiere at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Kaos at the Palms. This is the venue once known as Kaos Nightclub. “Nightclub” is no longer in the title as the space expands its scope. Yächtley Crëw, the room’s first ticketed act under the hotel’s San Manuel Tribe ownership, is helping navigate that direction.

A musical subcategory since about 2005, Yacht Rock is formerly known as smooth rock or soft rock. “Sailing” by Christopher Cross is a forerunner of the format, obviously as the song is an anthem for rocking on a yacht. “Africa” by Toto, “Maneater” by Hall and Oates, “Escape (The Pina Colada Song)” by Rupert Holmes, and “Reminiscing” by Little River Band. The SiriusXM has assigned an entire station, Yacht Rock Radio, to the format.

L.A.-based Yächtley Crëw has seized the breeze and developed a fully realized, touring tribute act. Singer Phillip Daniel, aka Philly Ocean onstage, says the waves developed about five years ago. Members of the band had been playing Doobie Brothers, Hall and Oates, Steely Dan and Toto. They commiserated about how to consolidate their very real music skills. They committed to the Yächtley Crëw concept and moniker, and opened the sails.

“We used to sing this stuff at karaoke together,” Daniel says. “In all honesty, we didn’t know if we’d be even playing for six months. We didn’t know if we play one show, or 1,000. I guess it was a kind of a benefit, that we didn’t have any expectations. We were literally just doing it because we thought it would be fun.”

Yächtley Crëw is now on a 34-city tour. They will arrive decked out in their blue blazers and matching boat shoes, and signature sailing caps. Expect expert musicianship and high energy on Kaos’ high seas.

“The guys in our band are brilliant musicians, and we just do something very different. In addition to playing the songs, we put on a show, it’s all the songs that you know and love,” Daniel says. “The folks in the crowd are in the party with us. We love the music. We love performing. We love being in a band. And more than anything, we love seeing the joy that it brings to people.”

D’Alessio at Pearl

Lupita D’Alessio is the second announced act to headline the reopened Pearl Concert Theater at the Palms, 8 p.m. Oct. 15. Tickets start at $59 (not including fees), onsale at ticketmaster.com. The popular Mexican singer’s most recent album, “Aquí Estoy Yo (En Vivo Desde Arena CDMX),” was captured in front of 15,000 fans at Mexico City’s Arena Ciudad de México. The 68-year-old star has recorded more than 50 albums over a 50-year career, and in June was presented the Legend Award at the Latin Grammys show at Michelob Ultra Arena at Mandalay Bay.

The ever-rocking Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo , announced this month, perform at The Pearl on Sept. 3.

Mayfair’s revamp

Mayfair Supper Club at Bellagio is shaking up its cast and format. Producers No Ceilings Entertainment are updating the music, dance numbers and pumping up the comedy in the supper-club experience. The show’s soft debut was this week. Consider this a “rolling” debut.

Among the newbies, Claire Souliér portrays Mae Montgomery, a character inspired by Madonna, Lady Gaga, Marilyn Monroe and Mae West. Jason Martinez , well-known around VegasVille, is Fred Lowell, an homage to Fred Astaire. The revised setlist includes such familiar numbers as “It’s all right,” “Watermelon Sugar,” “Creep” and “Me and Mrs. Jones.”

Choreographers Dean Lee, Keo Motsepe and Shannon Mather are adding new numbers and working with new dancers from a field of more than 400 applicants from around the world. Broadway playwright Adam North has created a comedic storyline, which reconnects two longtime entertainment friends and former housemates for a final performance in, where else? Las Vegas.

The costumes are also being redesigned (from the release) “with pops of bright pink, deep reds, golds and metallics delivering all the on-stage glam.” The Bellagio water show in the background remains unchanged.

Emmet, Toscano headline

We have a fusion of “America’s Got Talent” and “American Idol” at International Theater at Westgate Las Vegas on Aug. 6. “AGT” finalist Daniel Emmet and “Idol” finalist Pia Toscano headline a one-off, “Simply The Best: A Night of Duets.” The duo will sample pop, classical, rock, and Broadway selections covering multiple generations.

A 24-piece orchestra is being assembled, so this is an extensive endeavor.

The show is presented by Mark Shunock’s Mondays Dark, with some of the proceeds going to that Vegas-based organization. Tickets start at $49.95 (not including fees), going onsale 10 a.m. Friday at ticketmaster.com or the Westgate box office.

Great Moments in Social Media

We have rare photos of Adele in rehearsal, posted to her social media accounts Thursday morning. “Who’s ready for tomorrow?” she asks, referring to her upcoming two-show stint at Hyde Park in London.

Who’s ready for tomorrow!? pic.twitter.com/gMU7m1fh4g — Adele (@Adele) June 30, 2022

Those shows are still on the books for Friday and Saturday. We can expect that same question (cough) when the superstar returns her residency plans for the Strip.

Cool Hang Alert

Catch the rock ‘n’ soul stylings of the Gregg Peterson Band at 8 p.m. Friday at Naughty Ladies Saloon at Arizona Charlie’s Decatur. The band is back July 8, Aug. 19, Sept. 2 and Sept. 16. No cover. Drop the name of Marvin “Sweet Louie” Smith and see if anyone remembers.

Yachtley Crew Signs to Jimmy Buffett's Mailboat Records

Harold Sulman, President of Los Angeles-based Mailboat Records, today announced the signing of yacht rock superstars Yachtley Crew to the label. In addition, "The Titans Of Soft Rock" have just announced a set of monthly performances that begin the weekend of November 18th at Palms Casino Resort's KAOS, with upcoming dates scheduled in December and February 2023.

Yachtley Crew has spent the past few years selling out shows across the U.S., performing online during covid, and gathering a fan base of "Crewpies" that is unsurpassed. Having signed with legendary rock manager Andy Gould (Lionel Richie, Rob Zombie, Guns N' Roses, Linkin Park, etc.), the band recently recorded their very first ORIGINAL song, "Sex On The Beach," which was produced and mixed by Chris Lord-Alge (Stevie Nicks, Steven Tyler, Keith Urban, Bruce Springsteen.) The song debuted on the LA radio station 95.5 KLOS in April. Yachtley Crew added it to their recent live in-studio performance on the SiriusXM Radio Yacht Rock 311 show as the first-ever Yacht Rock band to perform at the station. Longtime agent Jim Lenz at TKO books Yachtley Crew.

"After seeing Yachtley Crew live at a sold-out show in Los Angeles, witnessing the band's top-notch talent and incredibly fun show, we thought it would be a perfect fit for Mailboat. We look forward to setting sail together for a great adventure!"  - Harold Sulman, Mailboat Records

"While other companies expressed great interest, we knew Mailboat would be our new home! We couldn't be more excited to join forces with Jimmy Buffett's Mailboat Records and the entire family of Mailboat artists!"  - Yachtley Crew

"The growth of Yachtley Crew has been amazing, and with the addition of Mailboat Records on our side, the future of Yachtley Crew is full speed ahead on an endless horizon!"  - Andy Gould, CEO and President of Spectacle Entertainment.

Yachtley Crew will reel you in with their world-class musicianship as they perform timeless soft rock hits from Christopher Cross to Hall & Oates to Toto and more! They bring specific elements of fun and showmanship to their performances while entertaining younger and older audience members. Whether you're hearing these songs for the first time or remember singing along with them on your AM radio, you will love the look of their thematic nautical suits and highly entertaining choreography. Yachtley Crew

yachtley crew members real names

Yachtley Crew is a Los Angeles area-based band of talented and tenured musicians with a common set of goals: to entertain music lovers with some of the greatest songs ever written back in the late 70's and early 80's, and to have as much fun as possible while performing those hits. Some fans may know it as "soft rock", others may identify it as "yacht rock", a more recently coined phrase. One thing is for sure, Yachtley Crew takes their sound very seriously. "They pay tribute to the songs by nailing the performances, but also blow the crowds away with their live presence, group banter and on-stage antics", said one scribe...

Yachtley Crew — the seven-piece So Cal band who burst onto the club scene in 2017 — selling out countless local venues before starting a nationwide Yacht Rock craze and being noticed by the legendary Jimmy Buffett who signed them to his own Mailboat Records label.

The nautical-suited and captain’s-hat-clad Yachtley Crew (otherwise known as “The Titans Of Soft Rock) is comprised of lead vocalist Phillip Daniel (Philly Ocean), drummer Rob Jones (Sailor Hawkins), bassist Chaz Ruiz (Baba Buoy), guitarist Thomas Gardner Jr. (Tommy Buoy), backing vocalist Curt Clendenin (Stoney Shores), saxophone/flutist Paul Pate (Pauly Shores) and keyboardist Matt Grossman (Matthew McDonald).

Growing exponentially over the past years, Yachtley Crew has toured in cities throughout the U.S. and Europe and is currently gearing up for its 2024 Full Steam Ahead tour that begins in March. The group will continue their third year of residency at The Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas and recently released their first EP Seas The Day on Mailboat Records.

Seas the Day was produced and mixed by Grammy award-winning Chris Lord-Alge (Stevie Nicks, Steven Tyler, Keith Urban, Bruce Springsteen, Green Day) and features the band’s first original song “Sex on the Beach,” accompanied by a video with a guest appearance by the Access Hollywood & iHeart host, Mario Lopez. The video was directed by Myles Erfurth (Dead Sara, Ice Nine Kills, Twiztid). Yachtley Crew is managed by longtime industry icon Andy Gould (Rob Zombie, Pantera, Lionel Richie, Guns N ’Roses) and represented by Jim Lenz at TKO.

Yachtley Crew have appeared on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live, have helped ring in the New Year on KLAS and KTLA’s “Las Vegas Countdown to 2023” (the exclusive, Emmy-winning special syndicated program that reached more than 16.5 million U.S. TV households), performed on countless morning television and radio shows throughout the country, have been featured on Fox News nationally and performed on SiriusXM’s Yacht Rock Radio “Yacht Rock 311” show as the first ever Yacht Rock band to perform live at the station. They have also performed at a cadre of charity and special events throughout the years including Mario Lopez Golf Classic Tournament in support of the Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center

For those uninitiated, Yacht Rock encapsulates the revival of soft rock and Top 40 hits from the late '70s to the early ‘80s, which has become a nationwide phenomenon, inspiring fans to dress the part and sing along. Other songs on Seas the Day include fan favorites such as Boz Scagg's“ ’Lido Shuffle,” Ace’s “How Long,” Robbie Dupree’s “Steal Away,” the Bee Gees“ ’How Deep Is Your Love” and all-time Yacht Rock pioneer Christopher Cross“ ’Ride Like the Wind.” Other songs in the band’s set include Toto’s “Africa,” Looking Glass“ ’Brandy” and Rupert Holmes's “Escape (The Piña Colada Song).”
