Young 11.. the good.. the bad

Southernman 73.

Hi, I have a mate looking to buy a Young 11 and i'll be helping him do the survey so thought I'd ask some questions.

1.  He wants to take it offshore single handed, i have suggested installation of a prodder to add handling sails easier than a pole.  Thoughts, anyone done this on a Young 11?

2. What are the pros and cons with these boats?

3.  Given the age of the boat what areas should we concentrate on when surveying?

4. How fast is the Young 11?  Are they good to windward?

He already owns a Pogo 30 in Europe so this is his NZ yacht and he wants to use it to cruise up to Fiji and so on when he's here on holiday.  Given he has a Pogo 30 how do these boats compare performance wise?

What other options could I recommend in the market right now?  Budget is around 120k NZ.

Is Fineline on the market?

Pogo 30 vs Y11, best guess is the original configuration Y11 would be similar performance, 11s with upgraded keel and mh kites should be a bit quicker to quite a bit quicker for the likes of Fineline.

Fineline has gone to Whangarei now. In general a Y11 needs weight on the rail to go upwind well...short-handed it's a case of reefing early and chopping down to a small headsail and living with it. With 8-10 crew it's a whole different story. The Y11 that did the last solo Tasman went OK but they also had pretty mild conditions for a Tasman crossing.

Off the wind they're just awesome and way more fun with a gennaker. We've had runs where we didn't drop below 12kts for 30mins at a time and surfing up to 16-17kts. We have also had a few mega surfs over 20kts on big waves with 35kts up the bum. So yes they go downwind well!

grant

if you look on the list of Cat one surveyors for Wellington, Kim McMoran, is a boat builder and built his own Y11, probably worth talking too.....

There was a Y11 called Rochelle many years ago, not sure what happened to her, but I did a season with them. The boat wasn't even built down below and only had a couple of bulkhads installed.

From that experience I can assure you that they like being very light, although we needed a lot of weight on the rail upwind, it was a rocketship.

Sailed it shorthanded a few times and a small blade up front worked fine. Still pulled good numbers in a moderate breeze. A modern keel would make them even better.

Boyd Smith had 1 at the same time, I think called Forever Young? He modified it somewhat with intention of doing the Melbourne Osaka race. I can't remember the outcome, but I'm sure someone knows the story.

Nice thanks for the replies.  Out of interest what young 11's are on the market at the moment?  I know one in Nelson which has 109k on it but given the price Fineline went for this seems high thoughts?  Are there any others for sale?

I owned Fineline back in the early 1990s ($65k we paid I think ..). She was "standard" in those days , went really well with the Blade / #3 when two handed. A good alround performer , and was a heap of fun ( we were early 20s, no kids etc ), light and fast. I thoroughly recommend a Y11 , hope your search is successful. I have been onboard one in NELSON only 2 years ago, and I believe it had been across the Tasman , was in very good order.

1988 Young 11 Cruiser-Racer

1988 Young 11 Cruiser-Racer

Reduced! This meticulous production cruiser-racer from NZ represents phenomenal value-for-money and is superbly race prepared, yet with an interior that can genuinely be used for family weekends away.

It’s the perfect twilight yacht being easily sailed short-handed, but is fully optioned for short-handed ocean racing having been prepared for last year’s Trans-Tasman, which it was unable to do because of severe weather for the delivery to NZ. The yacht is IRC rated at 1.062 (1.026 non-spinnaker).

So, this is the opportunity to take advantage of the preparation work that was done for taking on such a venture with the yacht being completely overhauled, including new standing rigging and an update of electronics.

The interior is open plan, but with a fully enclosed head, a traditional L-shaped galley and full sized nav’ table. A complete sail inventory includes assymetric and symmetric spinnakers, as you would expect it has a full linear drive autopilot, but also a back-up tiller pilot, and all of the running rigging is recent.

A detailed inventory is available on request and as is a detailed 2017 survey.

A really well sorted yacht that offers an awful lot of fun for the money.

J/11s – specially designed for short-handed sailing

  • Matthew Sheahan
  • March 16, 2017

Sharing the same hull as the popular J/111, this new boat is designed specifically for short-handed sailing. Matthew Sheahan tries her out

young 11 sailboat

In 2015 the double-handed class trophy for the Rolex Fastnet Race went to Kelvin Rawlings and Stuart Childerley aboard the J/105 Jester . Neither had raced short-handed before that season, yet both said afterwards that this was one of the most memorable and satisfying races they had ever done.

And they weren’t alone. Throughout the fleet, whether they had won silverware or not, there were plenty of other sailors echoing the same thoughts; short-handed sailing is on a roll.

Rawlings and Childerley’s J/105 is a boat that is still considered to be one of the best for the job, despite the fact that the design is now well over 20 years old. This in itself is interesting given that J Boats in general have long had a reputation for being good to sail short-handed, thanks largely to the perceived simplicity of the asymmetric spinnaker, and yet have only now launched a boat specifically aimed at this type of sailing.

Several production builders such as Jeanneau and JPK have been tapping into the enthusiasm for short-handing with models such as the Sun Fast 3200 and 3600 as well as the JPK 1010 and 1080. But finally J Boats has joined in with the J/11S.

If this boat looks familiar it is because she is based on the J/111, a boat that has proved herself successful and potent in fully crewed racing. This new 36-footer shares the same hull, deck and, to a large extent, cockpit layout of the J/111, but that’s where the similarities end.

Tweaked for short-handing

The J/11S has been tweaked to make her an easier boat to sail short-handed and more competitive. As a result she has twin rudders connected to a single tiller, a slightly shorter rig and a smaller jib. To contribute towards the lack of bodies on the rail she has more internal ballast. She also has an alloy mast and boom.

The changes and tweaks have helped to bring her IRC handicap down from 1.096 to 1.050, a reduction that gets her under the upper rating limit for the Transquadra race, a popular transatlantic race for single and double-handed amateur sailors over 40. But J Boats believes that there is another key area in which the new model can score.

J11s 4415 HR copy

A slightly smaller jib than aboard the J/111 makes this boat that bit easier to handle and gets the IRC rating down

Unlike the beamy and angular Jeanneaus and JPKs, the J/11S is a more modest hull shape and as a result her builder believes she will prove to be a better all-rounder. Even from just an arbitrary glance, the J appears to have less wetted surface area aft, suggesting she will be less sticky in the light.

She’s a very seductive boat to sail, especially short-handed. Because she’s a more modest affair with a narrower beam than the other two she’s easy to get to grips with and without the wheel steering fitted in the J/111 she has a more open cockpit, which is easier to move about in.

Stretching forward to reach the jib sheets or pulling up a halyard is easy, nothing is too far out of reach and with the autopilot controls positioned close to the tiller it’s easy to press the ‘auto’ button and nip forward if you have to.

Not that you will want to let the autopilot steer for very long. She’s a lovely boat to sail and makes you wonder why wheel steering is so popular on most of the J Boat range. Why numb a great feel?

Balanced on the helm

She’s so light and responsive under sail you would be hard pressed to tell that she has twin rudders, she’s that balanced on the helm. Even when tacking and gybing she feels nimble. It’s only when you’re manoeuvring under engine that you start to feel her wider turning circle and the lack of prop wash on the rudder at low speeds. But these characteristics would be easy to live with when taken in the context of a boat that is a great deal of fun to sail.

J11s 2334 HR

But there is one amusing irony. Among the many reasons for J Boats’ continued success in Europe has been its asymmetric spinnaker configuration. Not only did this open up the possibilities for extended downhill sleighrides for club sailors, but the ease with which the kite could be handled, especially through gybes, made life easier for the crew.

Little wonder then that as the amateur short-handed scene started to gather pace, many saw J Boats as providing the perfect platform for both inshore and offshore double-handed racing.

And yet many of those who have been sailing two-up for some time and may have started with asymmetrics, believe that symmetric kites are easier to handle for a short-handed crew. They argue that, although they may be a little trickier through the gybe in some conditions, the ability to square back the pole provides a much bigger range of downwind angles to steer, which in turn increases the range of one sail, while also making it easier to keep the helm well balanced.

Some even argue that an end-for-end pole gybe on a kite that is flying all the way through the manoeuvre is easier, more stable and less risky than gybing an asymmetric. Hoists and drops are easier and less prone to a trawl with a symmetric kite, especially if you are recovering using the ‘letter box’ drop technique where the kite is gathered between the mainsail foot and the boom.

Symmetric kite and conventional pole

None of which has been lost on J Boats, master of asymmetric racer-cruisers, which had blanked off the retractable bowsprit moulding on the first J/11S in favour of a symmetric kite and conventional pole.

While I can see the logic, our test sail, performed two-up, suggested that we had a little more work to do on timing and technique! But whichever configuration you prefer, having the facility for both is a key advantage for this boat.

J11s 2392 HR copy

Below decks she’s a very straightforward affair with a pair of settee berths either side of the saloon table, a small galley to port and a dedicated navigation station to starboard. Further aft under the cockpit side decks are a pair of berths and the forecabin plays host to the heads and a sail locker. All of which reminds you how much space you have aboard a 36-footer when you take five people out of the equation.

The bottom line is that this is a boat that feels the right size for a short-handed crew – so much so that it seems a shame to spoil the side deck with bodies. At roughly the same length as the J/105 she also feels like a natural successor to the 680 built.

All she has to do now is head out there and prove it.

J11s 2323 HR copy

A return to a symmetric spinnaker pole may surprise some people, but the short-handed gurus claim that symmetric kites are easier and safer than asymmetrics

J11s 2304 HR copy

Not a standard fitting, but bound to be popular, this is the short fixed bowsprit for the Code 0. Note the slot for the bow roller and anchor chain

J11s 2348 HR

As you might expect, all controls are led aft, but the size and ergonomics of the cockpit mean there are no special arrangements. She just fits

Young 88 is a 29 ′ 3 ″ / 8.9 m monohull sailboat designed by Jim Young and built by Roger Land Yachts/Jim Young Marine Ltd. (NZ) starting in 1981.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

Young Sun 35 Opinions

  • Add to quote

Hello folks I'm still on the hunt for an old heavy cruiser. I've been looking at Westsail 32, Tayana 37, Alberg 30/37, I just recently viewed a Young Sun 35. I can't find much information on the boat. It was pretty clean on the inside The deck was covered almost entirely with teak. It looked maintained just needed some polish. Mostly cosmetic issues. Any opinions on the quality of this boat and how it compares to other vintage heavy cruisers?? Thanks!!

Faster

IIRC this was a pirated Perry design very similar to the Baba series. No idea, though, how build quality compares. Hopefully Bob will weigh in.

Lazerbrains

Used to be one of these in my local marina. Looked like a nice, seaworthy heavy cruiser that won't win any speed races. Had nice hardware on it, but I don't know if that was replaced or original. The biggest worry for me about these style boats are the teak decks, which are prone to leaks and ruining the deck core underneath. They are alot of work to maintain the teak decks, and all the brightwork. Assuming good build quality and no problems with the example you found, I would think it would be a good, comfortable offshore passage maker. Not so much fun as a daysailer.

Faster is correct. Again. The Young Sun is not my design but similar to several of my designs. To give the company credit, I had breakfast with a nice young Taiwanese lady from the company and she offered me royalties for the boat if they could use my name. I told her I could not accept the royalties because it was not my design. Plain and simple. But they at least tried.

Iconic 'little blue boat' that calls Montrose Bay home up for sale after family makes tough decision

For almost 50 years a little blue boat has been moored on the River Derwent in Hobart's northern suburbs by the side of a busy highway.

It is known affectionately by many Tasmanians as "the little blue boat", and has floated alone next to the Brooker Highway at Montrose Bay over the decades.

Sea Breeze, its official name, was built by Robin Attrill in his Montrose backyard in the early 1970s.

His son Colin Attrill said the boat was launched at Macquarie Wharf in 1976.

"It's been on the mooring in Montrose Bay ever since, and that's why it's such an iconic little blue boat," he said.

Tasmanians curious about 'little blue boat'

The boat is an object of fascination for Brooker Highway motorists and foreshore walkers due to it seemingly never moving.

Colin Attrill said it was "absolutely amazing" the number of people who would stop and talk to him about the boat when he was launching the dinghy to go and check on it.

"The number of people that talk to me that are walking past and go 'that boat has been there forever' and 'it was there when I was going to school or every day when I've been driving to work'," he said.

"Some people say they've never seen it move. Well it used to move all the time.

"Of late it's slowed up, we're all busy and dad has slowed up. We lost mum and once that happened it impacted on family activities."

Tough decision to sell

Its owner is now 91 and the boat has not been sailed for about 10 years.

Colin Attrill said the family had recently made the tough decision to try to sell the boat.

"Dad isn't well and he's gotten old, which we all do, and the boat's got old," he said.

"Anyone who knows about a timber boat knows that they need maintenance."

Mr Attrill said the family used to put the boat on the slip at least once a year to clean and antifoul it, and do any repairs.

"But the past few years Dad has been unable to do anything, and the boat unfortunately has just sat on the mooring," he said.

He said the family decided it was time for the boat to have a new owner.

"Nobody is using it, it needs a new owner who will give it the time and get the enjoyment out of it that we had growing up," he said.

"It's a great boat, and there are many years left. Wooden boats just last."

'Next phase' for the boat

The Attrill family is full of passionate sailors and Robin's brother Peter represented Australia in sailing at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952 — Tasmania's fifth Olympian and the first to represent the state in sailing.

When Robin finished building the 25-foot river cruiser, known by the family as The Breeze, it was used for trips away around Hobart.

"We used to have family trips down the channel, down to Cygnet, down to Dover, and all places in between fishing and weekends away," he said.

"We also used to go to events in Hobart like the Hobart Regatta, the Sandy Bay Regatta. We'd be down the river at any chance, or up the river. She made it to New Norfolk a couple of times.

"The boat was all over the place, wherever we could."

Mr Attrill said it would be a sad day when the boat left Montrose Bay after almost 50 years.

"We will see where it goes and where it ends up and what's the next phase for the boat," he said.

Over the years its owner has been keeping a watchful eye on it just a matter of metres away, across the Brooker Highway from his Montrose home of more than 70 years.

"He's always been there. He'd open the blinds in the morning in the kitchen and look out the window and there's the boat," son Colin said.

"It's always been a part of his life."

Dolphins restructure Bradley Chubb's contract to create $11 million in extra cap room

Chubb is still working his way back from an acl tear.

getty-bradley-chubb-dolphins.jpg

When the Miami Dolphins acquired edge rusher Bradley Chubb via trade from the Denver Broncos in 2022, he made an immediate impact for the team, and they quickly handed him a contract extension. The five-year deal worth $110 million in new money was seemingly designed to be restructured so the Dolphins could create cap space in future years, and now, the Dolphins have done exactly that.

Miami converted $13.75 million of Chubb's base salary into a signing bonus, spreading the remainder of the cap hit over future years to save the team approximately $11 million in 2024, according to ESPN . Chubb had been set to hit Miami's books for around $26.9 million in 2024, but will instead have a more manageable cap number of $15.85 million, according to over the Cap.

Chubb was having an excellent 2023 season before a torn ACL in late December cut his year short. Chubb racked up 11 sacks and 70 pressures in his 16 games, with the latter mark ranking 12th in the NFL despite his missing the final contest of the year. Both he and fellow edge rusher Jaelan Phillips are working their way back from season-ending injuries (Phillips tore his Achilles a few weeks before Chubb went down with the ACL tear), and Miami signed former Buccaneers star Shaq Barrett to help on the edge until they can return to full strength.

The Dolphins are also undergoing some scheme changes on defense, with Vic Fangio departing to take the defensive coordinator job in Philadelphia and Miami replacing him with former Ravens defensive line coach Anthony Weaver. The Ravens have historically had a lot of success with edge rushers that oftentimes were not necessarily as talented as Chubb, so it'll be interesting to see what Weaver can help him do when he gets back on the field.

Neil Young says he's returning to Spotify, 2 years after exit over Joe Rogan's podcast

2019 Farm Aid

Neil Young is bringing his music back to Spotify because, he said, Apple and Amazon have “started serving the same disinformation” in podcasts that drove him to  quit Spotify more than two years ago . And Young said he can’t boycott Apple Music and Amazon Music, because then his music would have “very little streaming outlet to music lovers at all.”

In January 2022, Young demanded that Spotify pull his tracks off its service  in protest of the company’s failure to curb Covid misinformation in “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast. He said Spotify “can have Rogan or Young. Not both.” Spotify removed Young’s songs on Jan. 26. “Spotify has recently become a very damaging force via its public misinformation and lies about COVID,” Young wrote at the time.

Now the 78-year-old rock icon, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995, is coming back to Spotify. But he said it’s because Apple and Amazon have also become fonts of disinformation.

“Spotify, the #1 streamer of low res music in the world — Spotify, where you get less quality than we made, will now be home of my music again,” Young announced Tuesday in a post on his website.

Young continued: “My decision comes as music services Apple and Amazon have started serving the same disinformation podcast features I had opposed at SPOTIFY. I cannot just leave Apple and Amazon, like I did Spotify, because my music would have very little streaming outlet to music lovers at all, so I have returned to Spotify, in sincere hopes that Spotify sound quality will improve and people will be able to hear and feel all the music as we made it. Qobuz and Tidal, where my music is presented, are all High res as well.”

Young didn’t elaborate on what podcast “disinformation” Apple and Amazon are allegedly carrying. But that may be a reference to Rogan’s multiyear deal renewal with Spotify inked last month, under which “The Joe Rogan Experience” will no longer be exclusively available on Spotify. The podcast is now available on Apple Podcasts and YouTube and will be coming to Amazon Music, according to Spotify.

“I hope all you millions of Spotify users enjoy my songs!” Young wrote in the post. “They will now all be there for you except for the full sound we created.”

He urged Spotify to introduce a high-quality audio tier, which the audio streamer has previously promised — but has yet to deliver. “Hopefully Spotify will turn to Hi Res as the answer and serve all the music to everyone,” Young wrote. “Spotify, you can do it! Really be #1 in all ways. You have the music and the listeners!!!! Start with a limited Hi res tier and build from there!”

Young, after he exited Spotify in 2022, had criticized the quality of its audio compression as delivering a “degraded and neutered sound… If you support Spotify, you are destroying an art form.”

Nex Benedict’s death is a grim reflection of reality for many young LGBTQ Americans

Last month, nonbinary teenager Nex Benedict was found dead at his home one day after a fight with three classmates at his Oklahoma high school. Nex’s parents report that Nex, who used he/him and they/them pronouns, was the target of intense bullying by classmates in the months before his death. This month, the Department of Education announced it was investigating the school district’s handling of sex-based harassment.

Benedict’s death is a sobering reflection of the increasingly hostile climate young LGBTQ Americans face. Most of the coverage on this has focused on red states where politicians are seeking to roll back the rights of LGBTQ Americans, especially the trans and nonbinary community. But the harms are visible nationwide. A  recent report on Gen Z Americans from the Public Religion Research Institute (where I am the CEO) finds that Gen Z adults who identify as LGBTQ report experiencing far more hostility than their straight counterparts.

Many Americans may struggle to understand why our country is experiencing this backslide in LGBTQ rights, after years of growing acceptance.

Moreover, our  latest data  shows that in the past year, Americans have become less supportive of LGBTQ nondiscrimination protections and same-sex marriage, and less opposed to allowing religiously based refusals of service to LGBTQ Americans. Yet our report also shows that despite the hostility they face and their deep distrust of American institutions, queer Gen Zers also maintain a strong sense of resilience.

Many Americans may struggle to understand why our country is experiencing this backslide in LGBTQ rights, after years of  growing acceptance . As others have documented, this strategy, including a flurry of legislation restricting transgender rights and discussion of LGBTQ topics in schools by state legislatures and school boards, is part of a  concerted effort by conservative activists . They realize that while most Americans support same-sex marriage and nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ individuals, attitudes on gender identity and transgender rights are far more divided. As a result, far-right groups have fought to remove materials and curriculum from public schools and libraries that feature gay and transgender people.

Social conservatives have a long history of activism in schools that focuses on perceived threats to America’s children — much of it linked to sexual politics. These activists are alarmed not only by  younger Americans’ greater propensity to identify as LGBTQ , but also at the country’s larger acceptance of LGBTQ Americans, including those who are transgender or nonbinary. Last year, PRRI found that  Gen Z Americans are nearly twice as likely as older Americans  to have a close personal relationship with someone who uses gender-neutral pronouns. Gen Zers are also far more likely than older Americans to say they’d be comfortable learning that a friend was transgender or uses gender-neutral pronouns.

The far right’s efforts have themselves generated a  backlash among parents who support LGBTQ rights , but LGBTQ advocates note that these campaigns create a hostile, even terrifying, environment for young, queer Americans. Last year, we asked Americans the extent to which they have personally faced hostility and discrimination in the past few years. Gen Z adults were consistently more likely than older generations to have personally experienced hostility or discrimination on numerous fronts, including their gender, gender expression or sexual orientation. Among LGBTQ Americans, half of LGBTQ Gen Zers report experiencing discrimination based on sexual orientation, compared to just 10 percent of straight Zoomers. Close to half of LGBTQ adults (45 percent) also report facing hostility and discrimination based on their gender or gender identity, compared with just 17 percent of straight Gen Z adults.

Like other studies, we find that Gen Z Americans distrust a wide array of societal institutions, from the federal government and organized religion to the police and our justice system. This distrust is even stronger among LGBTQ Gen Zers. It is little wonder, then, that while 52 percent of straight Gen Z adults say we won’t be able to solve the country’s big problems until the oldest generation no longer holds power, that figure jumps to 78 percent of LGBTQ Gen Z adults.

young 11 sailboat

Despite the struggles young LGBTQ Americans face — and their strong distrust of institutions —they remain resilient and determined to change the country for the better. We asked Americans in our survey about their engagement in politics in the past year. Whether their involvement was online (signing a petition, posting on social media about issues they care about, or encouraging others to be politically active) or in person (attending rallies, volunteering for a group of cause, or attending rallies), LGBTQ Gen Z adults are far more actively engaged than their straight counterparts.

young 11 sailboat

Rather than passively accept political attempts to suppress their rights and their dignity, our survey shows that many LGBTQ adults are not shying away from political activism. The death of Nex Benedict, while revealing the brutal and frightening world that queer young Americans are facing, may also ignite even greater activism among this generation.

Melissa Deckman, Ph.D., is the CEO of the Public Religion Research Institute and a political scientist who studies the impact of gender, religion, and age on public opinion and political behavior. Her forthcoming book, "The Politics of Gen Z: How the Youngest Voters Will Shape Our Democracy" (Columbia University Press, 2024), examines the influence of gender and sexuality on Gen Z’s political behavior.

An abandoned, burned boat and 2 missing men: South African authorities investigate maritime mystery

CAPE TOWN, South Africa — South African authorities searching for a missing charter boat captain are concerned about possible foul play after they discovered his vessel burned and abandoned on a beach in neighboring Mozambique, but no sign of him or the unknown man who hired him.

The National Sea Rescue Institute raised the alarm over captain John Matambu and his passenger after they didn’t return to Sodwana Bay on South Africa’s northeastern coast on Saturday evening having gone out early that morning.

The charred wreck of Matambu’s speed boat, Magnum Too, was discovered by a search plane on Sunday in the Dobela area of Mozambique, some 170 kilometers (105 miles) up the coast.

“Both men remain missing in unknown circumstances,” the National Sea Rescue Institute said.

Matambu’s cousin told local media that a petrol canister and a medical kit were found near the boat.

The NSRI said some of the circumstances “appear to indicate that foul play may be involved.”

The man who hired Matambu to take him out on the 21-foot (6.4-meter) boat apparently gave false contact details, NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said. The booking was made for a man, his wife and a child, but only the man boarded the boat, Lambinon said.

“Hopes are that this has all been a misunderstanding, and foul play was not involved, but at this stage all possibilities are being examined,” Lambinon told national broadcaster SABC. “The fact that the boat has been found across the border is obviously the difficulty now.”

The NSRI received a report that the boat was spotted at 10 p.m. Saturday night heading north toward Mozambican waters, it said, the last sighting before its charred hull was discovered the following day.

The Police Sea Borderline Control agency and the Police Search and Rescue unit are also involved in the search. Authorities described Matambu as a well-known, experienced and respected boat captain in Sodwana Bay.
