Buyer revealed: New owner of Hamilton Harbor Yacht Club is a big player

The new owner of the Hamilton Harbor Yacht Club in Naples has a familiar ring.

On Wednesday, MSD Partners LP confirmed that it quietly purchased the club last week.

It's the same company that's providing the capital and financing for the redevelopment of the historic Naples Beach Hotel property off Gulf Shore Boulevard.

MSD Partners is an investment advisory firm tied to the family of billionaire Michael Dell, founder and CEO of Dell Technologies, one of the world's largest technology infrastructure companies.

The company, based in New York, purchased the yacht club on Sept. 28, through a limited liability company going under the name Naples Marina Owner.

The yacht club was previously owned by Collier Enterprises, its Naples-based developer.

Located at the edge of the Rookery Bay National Reserve off Thomasson Drive across from Port Royal, the club offers 35 wet and 325 dry boat storage slips, a full-service marina and waterfront dining. 

"The Collier family has developed an extraordinary club and we are honored to continue its rich legacy, while expanding and enhancing the membership experience and club offering," said Barry Sholem, a partner in MSD Partners, who also serves as the company's chairman of real estate, in a statement.

He provided no other details about MSD's plans for improving the club.

The purchase price wasn't disclosed by the buyers or sellers. A recorded deed, however, shows the club sold for $16.625 million.

MSD's other investments include the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea and the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai in Hawaii, the Fairmont Miramar in Santa Monica, and The Boca Raton Resort & Club in Palm Beach County, on Florida's east coast.

Together, MSD Capital and MSD Partners manage more than $22 billion in assets. Their investments in real estate now total about $7.9 billion.

Last week, Collier Enterprises also sold its Old Collier Golf Club, including its18-hole championship golf course.

Naples resident and businessman David Hoffmann announced his purchase of the golf club Friday, the same day he bought it through the Hoffmann Family of Cos., which has snatched up a dizzying number of local enterprises in recent years, including the Hertz Arena, the Florida Everblades hockey team, Naples Princess Cruises and Naples Transportation & Tours.

Hoffmann, a member of the exclusive, by-invitation-only golf club, didn't disclose how much he paid for the property. A deed had yet to be recorded on Wednesday.

He described both properties as "once-in-a-lifetime" asset purchases.

In an emailed statement last week, Patrick Utter, a senior vice president for Collier Enterprises, said: "Collier Enterprises is proud of the stellar reputation established at The Old Collier Golf Club and Hamilton Harbor Yacht Club over their storied histories. Our company wishes the members and new owners all the best going forward, as we continue to focus on our network of business entities and endeavors."

As for the Naples Beach Hotel project, it still sits in a holding pattern.

A legal challenge brought by a neighbor within days of a planned closing on the 125-acre property has held up the sale for months.

Naples resident Gregory Myers sued the current owners and the buyers in Collier Circuit Court in late May.

Based on publicly recorded plats and easements, he asserts in his lawsuit that he has an interest in the land, although he doesn't technically own any of it.

With that interest, Myers argues he should have more power to determine what becomes of the property that sits so close to his home. He's not happy about the plans for it.

In partnership with MSD, the Athens Group plans to raze the beach hotel and build a five-star 220-room resort with "best-in-class" residential condos along both sides of Gulf Shore Boulevard North. In April, the developers confirmed that they had signed a letter of intent with Four Seasons to operate the smaller, but more upscale resort that will replace the storied waterfront hotel that opened in 1946.

The Watkins family, longtime owners of the property, recently filed a motion for summary judgment in the Myers case.

In the motion, Naples attorney Jeffrey Fridkin, who represents the Watkinses, argues  Myers "cannot show any fact, or any lawful authority, to support his essential contention" that he has rights "over, across or upon" the resort property.

The next hearing in the case is scheduled for Oct. 29.

Beautiful Yacht club on the intercoastal waterway. Service was on point and food was delicious. You do have to come with a member in order to enjoy the place, but it was well worth it.

We had lunch the other day at Hamilton Harbor. Cyndy, our server, was pleasant as always. The lunch was delicious. I had the Caesar salad with grilled shrimp. My husband had a sandwich and soup. Everything is always made with care and we appreciate being members.

I was there as part of a group attending as winners of a charity auction. The location is wonderful, food excellent and the service, friendly and very professional! If you are looking for something out of the ordinary and within reach, this is a must for consideration!

Great atmosphere. Service in the restaurant was wonderful. Small wine list but very good selection (including 2008 Sassicaia and Rubicon Rutherford). Had the oysters and tempura shrimp. Yum!

Located on the edge of the Rookery Bay National Reserve, Hamilton Harbor is wrapped by 160 acres of preserve, including protected natural wetlands and one and one-half miles of shoreline.Next to the Rookery Bay National Reserve, the facility will provide boat owners with convenient access to the Gulf of Mexico. The 117,000-square-foot boat house will contain 325 dry slips and is built withstand 150-mile-per-hour winds. The building will accommodate vessels up to 50 feet long and will include a private yacht club and ship store. Designed by GCM Contracting Solutions, the boat house will be made of non-combustible and fire resistant materials.

We went twice as guests of a client that loves this place. And we were not disappointed. The establishment was super accommodating. All of the staff made us feel welcomed. Beautiful surroundings and atmosphere. Food was absolutely delicious and the presentation was a feast for... the eyes. More

Everyone told us to get the Calamari ~ oh yeah !! And husband had rack of lamb perfectly cooked, and my dinner was the best fish ~ like a seabass ~ perfectly cooked, and i needed simple so just ordered some sliced tomatoes ~ wonderful.... Since i skimped on dinner calories, we split a pecan pie..... The martini to start was ice cold, the champagne was fresh, and i sipped some of husband's coffee to end the evening. We ate outside, and watched a marvelous storm of lighting and wind and then a bit of rain. The staff was GREAT! They knew we were reciprocals but treated us as Members. Thanks you Folks! More

Recent addition Chef David has things humming on all cylinders with a delicious creative dinner menu that his knowledgeable profession staff serve in a delightful manner. Other diners, like ourselves, appreciate the time he will take to speak to us about his fare. It's almost... like discussing your menu for dinner with you personal chef. So, don't be afraid to ask if you're early diners like us when the kitchen isn't being taxed. What impresses the most is his careful sourcing of ingredients, viz.: plump sweet oysters from Washington State, super fresh sushi grade Ahi tuna shipped direct from a fish monger in Hawaii, ditto Mero (a sea bass-type fish native to Pacific waters favored by Japanese), really fine meats. On this night one of us had a very flavorful cowboy steak of wagu quality, and all of us were able to sample it. We all agreed that it had excellent flavor and texture. Sharing a dessert over coffee and enjoying the post-sunset in this top-shelf marina was not too shabby either as it was a delightful way to end another memorable meal prepared by this wizard of a chef. We were on Hamilton for 6 nights and planned to go there for our 40th Wedding Anniversary- It never opened the whole time we were there.

This was our second visit -- lunch on the first occasion - and the venue doesn't disappoint with the restaurant cleverly located on the first floor (European naming convention) to make the most of the view.. Our dinner was well cooked and with excellent presentation... -- congrats to the pastry chef. The staff were extremely friendly, however many seemed not not particularly well trained. Perhaps because many might have been temps for a large group. A relaxed atmosphere really helped add to the enjoyment of the evening. More

There were 8 of us that when to Hamilton Harbor on Feb. 28th., 2015 for dinner...It was a cool rainy night...Service was great..and things only got better..everyone's meal was great...4 of us got the Japanese SeaBass and it was wonderful...We will go back....very good...

Have been an invited guests on a few occasions and have always enjoyed my experiences. The main dining room is casual and surrounded by windows looking at the harbor and boats. The menu is varied and has something for all tastes. The calamari is NOT... to be missed! The staff is accommodating and attentive. I ate here as a guest twice this month for dinner and loved the place! The food was top class - fish flown in from Hawaii to local snapper.... the short rib apptz. and fig and pear salad were also wonderful! We got to view... a beautiful sunset over the gulf among some amazing yachts. The staff was very kind and great with wine selections and knowledge. I hope I get invited back again! More

Tech billionaire Michael S. Dell’s MSD Partners purchased the exclusive Hamilton Harbor Yacht Club in Naples for $16.625 million on Sept. 27. The seller was Collier Enterprises Inc., a Naples-based real estate investment and development firm that also sold its Old Collier Golf Club last week to Hoffmann Family of Companies for $45.333 million, the recorded deeds show.

Dell is the founder, chairman and CEO of Dell Technologies computer IT  company and also the money behind The Athens Group’s redevelopment of the Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club, which closed in May and is proposed as the future home of a Four Seasons resort. Dell’s MSD Partners and MSD Capital control a luxury portfolio that includes the Boca Raton Resort & Club purchased two years ago. MSD, which has offices in New York, California and West Palm Beach, is a private investment firm established in 1998 to exclusively manage the assets of Michael Dell and his family.

Hamilton Harbor Yacht Club is tucked away in a protected harbor off Naples Bay on 28.38 acres at the southern tip of the city of Naples near Naples Botanical Garden, Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, Gordon Pass and Keewaydin Island. Developed by Collier Enterprises in 2008, the private club has 25 floating wet slips and an advanced boat storage facility that can hold as many as 325 boats. Its Old Florida-style clubhouse with full-service restaurant and bar.

In an emailed statement, MSD says everything is “business as usual” for now.

Hoffmann made an initial offer to buy the yacht club but backed out of the deal before purchasing the 18-hole championship golf club days later in North Naples. Situated along the Cocohatchee River, west of U.S. 41, the property originally was purchased for $7,299,000 in December 1998 by the Old Collier Golf Club Inc., an affiliate of Collier Enterprises.

The Hamilton Harbor marina property, 7065 Hamilton Ave., had last sold for $350,000 in July 1999, county property records show.

Safe Boating Course Refresher Seminar

Basic Boating Safety Course

Before signing up for any of our on-the-water training programs, members must complete the Florida Boating Safety Course. This FREE online course from BoatUS is the foundation of knowledge that you will need to be successful throughout our on-water programs. If you have already completed a NASBLA approved boating course in Florida or another state, you do not need to take this course again, though the refresher may be helpful. Please note that Florida law requires that vessel operators born on or after January 1, 1988 MUST complete the Florida Boating Safety Course. If you have questions about who should complete this course, please use the contact button below. 

On-The-Water Power Boat Training Course

Our Basic On-The-Water Power Boat Training Course will teach you everything you need to know to safely operate a single-engine boat in Southwest Florida. If you are interested in using the rental boats at HHYC, this program will not only qualify you, but leave you well prepared for boating in Naples. This training includes understanding navigation aids, tides and marine weather, nautical charts, docking and maneuvering, anchoring, GPS navigation, and safety procedures. Combining this course with the Florida Safe Boating Course prepares you for boating in Naples, Marco Island, and the Fort Myers waterways. Cost is $500 per 4-hour session .

Advanced On-The-Water Power Boat Training Course

The Advanced On-The-Water Power Boat Training Course is perfect for boat owners with larger and more complex vessels, and builds upon the fundamentals in the Basic On-Water Training Course. The emphasis for this course is on learning and understanding radar, autopilot, joystick control, twin engine operation and docking, using windlass, and understanding onboard systems. Cost is $500 for each 4-hour session.
