Hi, New guy here. I'm thinking and looking to purchase an Elf 26' cat and I wanted to know if there is any information known about the design? I have looked high and low and it seems like this is the only one that was ever produced Stability? It's designed for S.A. coast? Offshore? Accommodations space below? Tankage? Performance? Ships systems? Any information would be appreciated.

Is this the boat? http://www.sailingcatamarans.com/elf.htm
Thats a brochure of the boat but yes, chances are that is because I can't find another anywhere.

The Designer posts on this forum regularly. I bet if you sent him an email he would try to answer any questions you would have about the boat. It looks like a nice Cat...

I have read about them before and don't know how many are in production....in fact I can't really help you, but I see it as a weekender, inland cruiser not a real off shore cat and doubt there is much in the way of tankage, I think it has a porta pottie. I like the elf but would like to see access to the hulls from the main cabin, now the pics show one thing and the drawings appear to show that there is access, so I'm not sure....I couldn't enlarge the drawing. Looks like alot of boat in 26'.....

There is some footage of an open deck version sailing in SA on Richards promo vid. Looks a nice boat - as practical as a Strider but much roomier hulls.

Thanks
All good Ask Richard by PM anything else. He provided us with very honest information on the design even going into great detail as to why it didn't work commercially as a freestander rig. Very Honest straight up designer.

The Elf 26 started life in the mid 1980's as the Efcat that was built in Germany. It was to be a big Strider/small Skua. Sadly only three or four were built. It then morphed into the Elf 26, which was still an open deck boat. This was built in S Africa for a few years in the early 1990's. I think maybe 20 were built (the builder stopped paying me royalties so I don't know the actual number built) We then built an Elf mk2 with a central cuddy and built three or four. It is a transportable boat rather than trailable. It was too expensive to build. Most people spending GBP40000 bought a bigger used Prout or Catalac. The Elf then had another variant, the Savannah 26. This was a maxi folding boat, similar in concept to my Wizard/Sango/Skoota. Unfortunately the owner wanted an Aerorig, which was too heavy and expensive for the boat. We trailed it from Savannah to Annapolis for one boat show. The next year I sailed it there singlehanded in 8 days (6 days coming home). My first ICW experience. It had daggerboards, kickup rudders and a big cabin - needed to support the rig. It sailed well and was about the same speed as a Gemini 105 and Mainecat30 at the "Try a Multihull" demo days after the show. A lot quicker than a Lagoon 38. Only one was built, but a daggerboarded, open deck Elf would still be a quick boat. The boat being discussed is presumably the one on Vashon Island, Wa, USA. I saw it in April this year, a bit neglected and keenly for sale by the owners widow. This boat was built by the Multihull Centre, Millbrook, UK and shipped in a container to its first owner in Vancouver BC Canada. It was sold to a couple from Seattle. We met those owners a couple of years ago when we were both cruising in the Bahamas. They sold it to buy a big Fountaine Pajot and they said the Elf was a faster boat and more fun to sail. They sold it to the guy on Vashon Island. Although I still own the moulds, and can arrange a builder should you want to buy a new one I haven't promoted it, hence the lack of detail on my site. But if you scroll back through my early newsletters you'll see some reports from S African sailors. One English Elf has been owned by the same couple for nearly 15 years, although since the owner is now in his 80's I guess his sailing days will soon be numbered. You cannot get from the cuddy into the hulls, there are walkways between hull and cuddy making access forward safe and secure. And adding privacy for parents/children or guests. A bit like my 28ft Gypsy and 34ft Romany. The boat is held together with aluminium crossbeams and it has LAR keels and fixed rudders. Standing headroom in the hulls and a large sliding hatch in the cuddy giving almost standing headroom. The galley is in the cuddy, plus a dinette/double berth. Wide single bunks in the hulls. Fully moulded. Hope that helps and thank you for the kind comments about me Richard Woods of Woods Designs www.sailingcatamarans.com

Hi Richard Thanks for clearing that up for John1234 I attach the open deck version we made inquiry about quite some time back. I believe (we were told) it is the open deck Elf. I'll back out now and leave for John1234 to contact you should he require further detail.

At Savannah Boat Works , a great deal of thought goes into each model we produce before the first piece of fiberglass is cut. The idea of starting a boat building business arose from the owner’s personal experiences with various boats over the years. One consistent theme with each boat available on the market seemed to be that many models are exclusively geared towards performing a specific function at the expense of sacrificing versatility and functionality in others. For years, the lack of versatility in boat designs has made it difficult to give the needs of everyone in the family equal attention. ‍ Savannah Boats are thoughtfully designed to accomplish as many tasks as possible while considering the interests of your entire family. Building a versatile, all in one model is our top priority. Each model is designed to cover all the bases from a relaxing cruise to family day at the sandbar while easily switching gears to serious fishing outings from the backwater to the blue water.

OTHER COMMENTS:<br />

This is only a short review but we hope it is to the point!<br />

We sailed the <strong>Savannah</strong> <strong>26</strong> <strong>Catamaran</strong> in the Chesapeake<br />

Bay in winds varying from 10 to 20 knots. Alongside, or<br />

overrun, were a number of other well known catamarans<br />

from 28 to 36 feet overall. The <strong>Savannah</strong> outran most,<br />

stayed with the remainder, and did it smoothly, with almost<br />

no slap or slam. In short, she was a joy to sail - as are most<br />

Richard Wood's designs.<br />

<strong>Savannah</strong>'s lines are not exactly sleek. But this catamaran is<br />

very utilitarian and will remind some of a once very well<br />

respected European car import. We think <strong>Savannah</strong><br />

deserves the same popularity.<br />

As to trailerability, she appears to be the simplest and<br />

quickest on and off the trailer, using floatation and rotation<br />

rather than complicated mechanical systems.<br />

Gunk hole her. Take her to the islands for a while. As a<br />

couple, enjoy her spacious, simple but extremely useful<br />

center cabin. And then shock some of those bigger<br />

catamarans you'll be sailing by.

Boats mentioned: Eclipse, Elf 26, Flica 34, Savannah 26, Stealth, Strider

This was a very busy year: Lots of sailing - in four continents, boatbuilding - the prototype of the new Eclipse 99, as well as several new designs on the drawing board - Eclipse 99, Romany and the Mirage

I was once again off on my travels. This time it was to the South Atlantic were I spent January racing from Capetown to Rio in a Simonis designed Norseman 43 catamaran. There were 3 Woods designs in the race, so you may wonder why I did not sail one of those. Well, for one thing I wasn't asked, for another, its always good to sail other people's boats so that you can get new ideas. Unfortunately, I found the Norseman to be a very disappointing design. It was slow and difficult to sail (10 knots in flat water, 120 degrees between tacks was not helped by a very poor deck layout). It was unstable (very narrow bows which were easy to pitchpole, we had the boat under water to the mast and the rudders out on one occasion). Finally, it was very uncomfortable (the low bridgedeck slammed a lot, there was only one comfortable seat in both the cockpit and the saloon while the bunks were very awkward to get into). To find out more about the race CLICK HERE

On my return from Brazil I was immediately very busy in the office preparing the drawings for the new 32' Eclipse 99. We hope that this will become a new production boat, falling midway between the Sagitta and Banshee designs. It has 3 double cabins, standing headroom throughout and - we hope - performance similar to Banshee. It will be marketed by the Multihull Centre who should be contacted direct for details of the production boat.

Plans for home building will also be available, for building a boat with strip plank hulls and ply decks.

Its unusual for me to mention other boats on my web page, but the whole world knows about Pete Goss and Team Philips. Pete lives near me and we sail at the same club so I've been following progress on his boat with interest. Team Philips has "wave piercing" bows, which as you can see, are very fine indeed. I am not convinced of the logic of this approach. It certainly is not something the average owner who pays mooring fees, has to tie up alongside, etc would want to have on their boat. Launching boats is always a case of "Hurry up and wait", so we though it would be more interesting to see the boat go the 12 miles down the River Dart to the sea rather than see the launch itself. It was certainly a dramatic sight as the river is not very wide at Totnes!

The last few weeks have been spent building the hull and deck plugs for the new Eclipse. The hull plug is now nearly finished, as can be seen from the photo. The deck and interior plugs are nearing completion and we hope to have the bulk of the work on these parts by mid June. The building drawings for home builders are under way, but won't be fully complete until September/October. However, by way of compensation, I will sell the building plans at a discounted price of £900 (plus VAT) - normal price £1200 - to all those who buy plans before they are completed.

Towards the end of each sailing season I always get letters from enthusiastic owners reporting on their sailing year. This year is no different and excerpts from three letters are printed below:

" Earlier this year I bought Strider sail # 57. I write this letter just to let you know that I have never had such fun with a boat. All boat designs are a compromise as with most things they have their stronger and weaker points. I plan to fit it out in a spartan manner for cruising, I can see that weight is a limiting factor. I am delighted to have joined the multi hull fraternity who all seem keen to discuss what makes their boats perform, much more so than mono hull owners it seems. It is almost true to say that I have a queue of sailing friends wanting to come for a sail! I was a long time coming to multi hulls because most of the ones you see are pretty ugly creations and it wasn't until I discovered your designs and those of James Wharram that I realised they could actually look good. I gave up the Wharram idea as most of them are just a bit too crude Enough rambling, just thought I would let you know that Striders have another fan. As someone who is coming up to retirement age I was a little worried by my choice of boat as I thought it might be just a bit too hairy, not so, it is well mannered and beautifully balanced and by my standards goes like hell, wonderful! "

October/November

I was away for much of October as I was in the USA sailing the Savannah 26 about 1500 miles from S Carolina to the Annapolis boat show and back. It was an interesting trip, especially as I did it singlehanded. A full report will appear on the web site later. The Savannah is fitted with an Aerorig and I have made some more comments about this rig on the "Technical Comments" page

Ron Holback built a Flica a few years ago, launched it in San Francisco and sailed it to Panama with his family. I had not heard from him for some years, but recently got this email: Hi Richard, "To refresh your memory I launched my Flica "Toucan" back in 1993. My family and I immediately moved aboard and left the San Francisco bay headed south. We cruised Central America, eventually ending up in Panama where I started a boat repair business. A year ago we moved back aboard and cruised up the east coast of Central America, recently arriving in Texas. Let me congratulate you on designing a very comfortable home, one our family of 4 could live on for years without any problem! Our situation is such that we'll be land based for awhile now and feel we should sell the boat to someone that will use her. It's too big and too nice a boat to be kept tied up in a marina for years. The boat is well built, has a new imron paint job, and looks good. Let me ask you a question that I know is difficult for you to answer, but I'd appreciate a ballpark figure- what do you think the boat is worth in U.S. dollars? It has solid glass hulls, hard chine, foam core deck, one 3 cylinder Yanmar on the port side which has been very well maintained and still looks brand new. I'd appreciate any help you can render, and if you know of anyone interested feel free to give them my e-mail address." Regards, Ron Holback

SAVANNAH review

Spotlight On  SAVANNAH

By Editorial Team | 20th Apr 2018

Once the ink had dried on the contract back in 2011, more than a thousand people came together to oversee the successful completion of SAVANNAH, the world’s first truly hybrid superyacht.

Inspired by Breathe- an earlier concept model unveiled by DeVoogt Naval Architects at the Monaco Yacht Show in 2010- SAVANNAH was conceived from the very outset as something of an eco-friendly revolution.

The world’s first hybrid superyacht, the three year project was defined by only the most ambitious of goals. With an owner reportedly keen to be at one with the water, everything about the construction of the 84m/273ft superyacht SAVANNAH was meticulously designed to form a seamless integration between the vessel and the ocean.

From her floating superstructure, to a hugely open aft deck, to glass panelling creating the illusion of an exterior floating on air, all of the styling which was produced in partnership with CG design has ensured that SAVANNAH is every inch the embodiment of forward thinking.

SAVANNAH photo 2

Such a modern and conscious approach to design ultimately paid off, and the yacht gathered a series of accolades at the 2016 ShowBoats Design Awards. The only charter yacht to be recognised at the ceremony in Austria, SAVANNAH collected three coveted Neptune trophies for: ‘Exterior Styling & Design – Motor Yacht Above 500GT’, ‘Interior Layout & Design Award – Motor Yacht Above 500GT’, and the ‘Holistic Design Award’ for a ‘harmony unequalled by any other contender’.

What’s more, she was awarded with the prestigious title of ‘Best Motor Yacht 1,300GT to 2,999GT’ at the World Superyacht Awards 2016, marking a truly phenomenal year for the team behind her.

SAVANNAH photo 1

Passing the nine-metre swimming pool and the sun loungers which surround it, charter guests enter SAVANNAH via a large glass door which encases the main salon. Enjoying an abundance of natural light as a consequence of this structural arrangement, the circular social space is furnished with minimal yet well positioned sofas to offer both comfort and space to those on board.

No strangers to modern luxury, the design house responsible for styling the interior of  SAVANNAH previously worked on the Kenzo and Christian Dior stores in their native France. Bringing their expertise to the world of motor yachts, CG Design have created a relaxed interior environment which connects naturally to the exterior area immediately to the aft.

SAVANNAH photo 12

Fusing state of the art engineering with state of the art design, superyacht SAVANNAH promises a highly unique charter experience

Also on this deck is the central spiral staircase which separates the main salon from the secondary lounge and the five guest cabins. Thanks to the pioneering engineering which very much defines this yacht, each of these areas experience very little noise and vibration when underway or at-anchor. To discover exactly why this is the case, be sure to read our feature on the pioneering mechanics of superyacht SAVANNAH.

Further forward along the main deck, charter guests will encounter an additional salon which has become known as the ‘sitting room’. Populated with a large sofa and four additional deep seats, this space is an attractive alternative to the main salon.

SAVANNAH photo 5

Complete with its own waterside balcony, the VIP cabin on board SAVANNAH has been thoughtfully arranged to ensure that guests can enjoy the same spaciousness in private that they do in the communal areas.

Continuing the theme of vast natural light, the floor to ceiling glass door which leads to the balcony can be easily shaded for when the occupants require a greater darkness for sleeping in.

With the addition of enormous en suite facilities, this VIP cabin is ultimately a luxurious and voluminous retreat for occupants to return to following a day out on the water.

SAVANNAH photo 6

The remaining cabins on the main deck consist of 4 doubles which each include their own set of ensuite facilities. Consistent with the minimalism of the social spaces, these doubles have a limited number of fixtures and furnishings to enhance a spacious and refreshing feel.

With finely integrated television systems, guests using these cabins will have no difficulty kicking back in privacy should they prefer some time to themselves.

The underwater lounge makes use of especially thick glass which can be covered up to transform the space into a cinema

Due to its position in the hull, the underwater lounge allows guests to look through clear waters to inspect marine life without having to suit up in snorkelling or diving gear.

Excellently furnished, guests are able to view movies or nature in total comfort either when underway or at-anchor. As a revolutionary feature, this section of SAVANNAH is sure to attract charter guests and serve as a popular social hub during their vacation.

SAVANNAH photo 9

When making their way up to the owner’s deck, the principal charter guest will discover an  array of fascinating finishing touches that make simply walking through the yacht a total pleasure.

Indeed, everything from the graceful curves of the spiral staircase to the expertly thought out lighting arrangements produce a calming environment that has no rivals.

If course, with additional lounge spaces located up on the owner’s deck, the principal charter guest will be able to entertain the remaining guest in style. The upper deck is also where guests will find the state of the art gymnasium which is perfect for both full and casual workouts.

An eye-catching addition to the owner’s deck, two opposing video walls serve as calming and moving artworks

Stretching from the outdoor seating area on the aft, to the sleeping area at the fore, the owner’s deck of superyacht SAVANNAH can function as either a private sanctuary or an expansive social area.

Indeed, with further seating areas adorned with comfortable furnishings and space-enhancing decorations, the deck can be used as a quiet hangout space or as an alternative to the main salon.

SAVANNAH photo 15

The owner’s cabin itself extends from a personal office to an enormous sleeping area which features a bed beneath a circular skylight. Easily covered, this eye into the sky baths the area in natural lighting to make the area feel particularly spacious.

As you might expect, the ensuite facilities are suitably sprawling, with a his and hers arrangement making it an ideal cabin for couples to share. What’s more, the low noise and vibration levels make sleeping here a total dream.

SAVANNAH photo 27

Making the transition to the outdoor section of the yacht is entirely effortless thanks to the large sliding doors which wrap around the aft section of the interior areas.

The exterior of superyacht SAVANNAH is the perfect place to soak up the sun and surroundings. Indeed, with the option to swim lengths in the pool, look out across the water from the Jacuzzi, or dine alfresco, charter guests could reasonably enjoy their entire vacation around the outdoor spaces.

SAVANNAH photo 18

The exterior of superyacht SAVANNAH abounds in areas for guests to unwind and socialise around. Indeed, with four of her five decks offering outdoor living spaces, it’s possible for charter parties to spend their time as a whole or in smaller groups.

When the sun has gone down for the night, charter guests can remain warm thanks to a finely integrated fireplace adjacent to a lounge arrangement. The perfect place to sip on cocktails in company, this section of the superyacht is a strong alternative to the main salon when it comes to deciding where to enjoy some nighttime entertainment.

SAVANNAH photo 21

Complete with walk up bars and large outdoor lounges, guests won’t struggle to find their own sanctuary when soaking up the sun on board SAVANNAH.

It is, of course, just as exciting to step off the yacht to enjoy all of the exciting toys hidden away in the tender garage. For the adventurously inclined, the SeaDoos and Jet-Skis will certainly please, whilst more laid back guests will no doubt be drawn to the snorkelling gear and paddleboards.

SAVANNAH photo 8

Nestled in the bow of superyacht SAVANNAH is a secret chill out space that allows those on board to get away from it all inside of a unique and cozy environment.

Another example of how the Feadship superyacht manages to break the mold with grace, this modern looking bow space has no rivals and could well lead the way for future imitations.

Ultimately, the main deck of the superyacht is an elegant mix of social and guest spaces, each eloquently laid out and decorated by CG Design.

SAVANNAH photo 3

Composed of ingenious living spaces, there are some aspects of superyacht SAVANNAH which have never before been seen on board superyachts before.

An underwater lounge on the port side, for example, is one structural highlight where guests can watch the marine life outside or turn around and observe the action in the nine-metre swimming pool.

Savannah - Yacht for Sale

  • Builder Feadship
  • Length 83.5m (274ft)
  • Year 2015 / 2020
  • Gross Tons 2305

SAVANNAH motor yacht raised the bar and continues to be a reference yacht when it comes to lifestyle, design, and technology.

The world’s first electro-mechanic superyacht combined with a battery bank of over 1 megawatt, the luxury superyacht SAVANNAH’s efficient hull and propulsion set-up provide fuel savings of 30 per cent compared to conventional yachts in her class.

Exterior Design & Engineering

A true trailblazer, SAVANNAH yacht is a multi-award-winning 83.50m Feadship flagship.

She is the world’s largest metallic object: her clean lines are enhanced by walls of glass, which wrap around the decks, while an aft-deck pool with steps cascading down to an oversized swim platform speak volumes about her luxury credentials.

The SAVANNAH yacht owner has consistently maintained her since her 2015 launch, with a full repaint in 2020 and numerous other upgrades, and today she is one of the most sought-after yachts on the charter market.

Her efficient hull and electric-diesel hybrid propulsion provides greener and quieter cruising for the eco-conscious. She has a maximum speed of 17 knots and cruises at 14 knots.

SAVANNAH yacht has some of the most outstanding amenities of any yacht on the water.

The nine-metre pool on her aft deck, flanked by daybeds and a huge sofa, offers sensational views, and connects effortlessly to her chic main salon via curved sliding doors to create one large, glamorous entertaining space. Meanwhile, her partially submerged ‘Nemo’ underwater lounge is the first of its kind and is fantastic for wildlife expeditions.

Elsewhere, the new SAVANNAH yacht owner will doubtlessly find the touch-and-go helipad a welcome addition for smooth arrivals and departures, while the statement elevator makes her accessible for all. A gym, spa and Hammam, and DJ station on the sun deck complete the luxury package.

Interior Design

Thanks to her peerless use of glass, SAVANNAH yacht ensures soothing views wherever you are on the yacht and her interiors by Cristina Gherardi Bernadeau and Marcello Bozzarelli of CG Design show what can be achieved when designers are allowed to reimagine yacht spaces, with curved rooms and cabins replacing the more typical straight walls to create a sophisticated, cocooned feel.

Dark rosewood floors, silk curtains, polished columns, and a metallic finish throughout create an opulent ambience that is unsurpassed. SAVANNAH yacht can accommodate 12 guests across six cabins, with a VIP, two doubles and two convertible cabins making up the five beautiful cabins forward on the main deck. Above, the Owner’s deck is a showstopper, with a huge skylight above the bed, and a dining room, salon, office, large marble bathroom and dressing area providing an exclusive enclave, while outside there is a private terrace and helipad.

Toys & Tenders

SAVANNAH yacht for sale comes with both a 9.5m limousine tender and a 9.5m sport tender. It’s hard to imagine a more exhaustive toy collection, with Seadoos, Seabobs, electric surfboards, two laser sailboats, SUPs, Efoils, kayaks, specialised Roubaix bikes, diving and snorkelling gear, a water slide, towables, and more to play with. There’s even an onboard basketball court and golf driving range.

Two trampolines offer an additional lounging area at the front of the boat.
