The 9th of August is a historic date for the Italian shipbuilding industry, marking 30 years of a record that still stands undefeated, set by the ship Destriero. Since 1992 the “Blue Riband” for the Atlantic crossing has belonged to all those who participated in the design and construction of the ship and the realisation of the challenge.

Destriero: a record still unbeaten after 30 years

On 6 August 1992, Destriero, a fantastic example of Italian naval technology, left behind the Ambrose Light in New York, the skyscrapers of Manhattan and the Verrazzano bridge to embark on the record-breaking attempt.

At dawn on 9 August 1992, at 6.14 a.m. and 50 seconds, staff manning the Bishop Rock lighthouse in the Scilly isles off England, still shrouded in fog, were surprised to hear the voice of Cesare Fiorio over the radio: “Good Morning, this is the commander of the ship Destriero, we left from New York, please register the date and time of our passage.” “Good morning Destriero, we were not expecting you so soon…” was the operator’s reply.

Destriero: a record still unbeaten after 30 years

Destriero, flying the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda burgee, had covered 3,106 miles in 58 hours, 34 minutes and 50 seconds, at an average speed of 53.09 knots, or 98.323 km/h, taking 21 hours less than the English catamaran Hoverspeed, holder of the previous record.

Waiting for the crew on their arrival was H.H. the Aga Khan, President of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and the main supporter of the project. In addition to the Blue Riband, Destriero was also awarded the New York Yacht Club’s Columbus Atlantic Trophy and the Virgin Atlantic Challenge Trophy, created by Richard Branson.

Fincantieri Marks 20 Years of the Destriero

  • July 24, 2012

destriero yacht interior

The monohull, built in 1991 in less than a year by Fincantieri, sailed 3,106 nautical miles without refueling, from  Ambrose Light, New York to Bishop Rock lightship on the Scilly  Isles, England, in 58 hours at an average speed of  53 knots (reaching  peaks of  70), and won once more the Blue Riband which in 1933 had been awarded to the legendary transatlantic liner, the Rex.

Present at the event were Corrado Antonini, Chairman of  Fincantieri, Cesare Fiorio, head of the Destriero Challenge program  and Aldo Benedetti, second-in-command of  the Destriero.

Built at the shipyards of  Muggiano and Riva Trigoso, the Destriero was the largest ship in light alloy ever to be constructed and one of the vessels with the highest  concentration of  efficiency, power and technology. At 67 metres long with a beam of  13 metres and 60,000 HP, the yacht could reach average speeds of over  60 knots. Record figures, the pride of Italy, a result based on a wealth of  experience in the construction  of  ships gained by Fincantieri in the course of over two centuries. The Destriero marked for Fincantieri the beginning of the production of  a new generation of  high speed vessels with consequent benefits for commercial development.

The challenge of  the Destriero started with the aim to break the record for crossing the Atlantic, for which the Blue Riband has been awarded since 1838. Later, in 1935 winners of the Blue Riband were also awarded the Hales Trophy, following a proposal from a British MP, Harold Hales. The competition regulations allow merchant vessels to participate provided that,  during an in Atlantic crossing, from East to West, they meet certain requirements: to have mail on board, paying passengers and a professional crew. The Destriero follows in the wake of this tradition; her challenge to the Atlantic starts from a passion for naval technology, from Ismaili Prince Karim Aga Khan, who sponsored the initiative, supported by leading testimonials of Italian industry and culture of the time, from the Fiat of  Gianni Agnelli,  to the IRI of  Franco Nobili and other numerous sponsors.

Destriero will be dismantled: the sad end of the symbol of excellence in the Italian boating industry.

  • Luca D'Ambrosio
  • May 3, 2024

The yacht Destriero, symbol of excellence in the Italian boating industry, will be demolished, as confirmed by sources close to the shipyard. This news is truly unbelievable considering that the ceremony celebrating its thirtieth anniversary took place just two years ago. An important ceremony held in La Spezia, right where Destriero was originally built, at the Muggiano shipyard.

“ It was a touching ceremony – recalls Ivan Drogo Inglese, President of the Stati Generali del Patrimonio Italiano and organizer of the event along with the Fondazione Fincantieri – The event saw the participation of Fincantieri’s President, General Claudio Graziano , pilot Cesare Fiorio , Undersecretary Stefania Pucciarelli, Yacht Club Costa Smeralda Secretary Edoardo Recchi , and of course, the crew members and their families “.

nastro-azzurro

After the international limelight and an initial idea, immediately abandoned, to transform the record-breaking vessel into a yacht, Destriero ended up in Bremen, at the Lürssen shipyards where it was dry-docked, stripped of its turbines, and left exposed to the relentless effects of time. The costly yet lightweight aluminum construction had gradually deteriorated, resulting in significant hull breaches, despite the Aga Khan administration consistently covering the expensive mooring costs of the vessel.

Destriero’s feat also laid the groundwork for the development of the fast cruise ship segment, a very important sector from which Fincantieri itself has greatly benefited until today. It was precisely because of this “debt of honor” that Drogo Inglese had tried to involve the Italian group in a possible restoration, aimed at enhancing this important vessel. One of the plausible hypotheses would have been to place Destriero on the waterfront of the port of La Spezia, near the naval design educational center of the University of Genoa.

destriero-agnelli-fiorio

Destriero: the feat and the victory of the “Blue Ribbon”

Destriero was designed by the naval architecture studio Donald L. Blount and Associates and was equipped with three General Electric LM1600 gas turbines capable of generating an impressive total power of 51,675 hp (38,534 kW). These turbines, connected to three waterjets, could propel this super-fast superyacht to speeds close to 70 knots, or almost 130 km/h.

Measuring an impressive 67.7 meters in length and 13 meters in width, Destriero boasted a range of over 3,000 nautical miles. What still astonishes to this day is its ability to navigate at stellar speeds, even in rough sea conditions. The renowned institution Det Norske Veritas had certified the vessel’s structure for speeds up to 65 knots in sea state 4 conditions, with waves up to 2.5 meters high, and for speeds up to 30 knots in waves up to 5 meters high!

Built by Fincantieri in just 270 days, a record within the record, Destriero benefited from aerodynamics studied, even using wind tunnel testing, by Pininfarina. The bow accommodated the impressive fuel tanks, totaling 800 tonnes, while the crew of 16 members were allocated only 6 bunks, which, of course, were occupied in shifts.

On August 6, 1982, at 18:59 Greenwich time, Destriero departed from the Ambrose Light in New York, and after an incredible journey of 3,106 miles, at 06:14:50, precisely 2 days, 10 hours, 34 minutes, and 50 seconds later, it crossed the imaginary finish line, set at the Bishop Rock Lighthouse in England, earning the Blue Ribbon and beating the previous record by 21.5 hours.

The average speed of the crossing remains impressive to this day, at 53.09 knots (98.3 km/h), with a record average distance covered in 24 hours of 1,402 nautical miles, traveled at an incredible speed of 58.4 knots.

The crew of Destriero consisted of Cesare Fiorio (responsible and organizer), Odoardo Mancini (captain), Aldo Benedetti (second in command), Sergio Simeone (first officer), Franco De Mei (telecommunications), Giuseppe Carbonaro (chief engineer), Mario Gando and Nello Andreoli (chief mechanics), Massimo Robino (electrician), Silvano Federici, Cesare Quondamatteo, and Carlo Chiara (engineers), and technicians Davide Maccario, Giacomo Petriccione, Giuseppe Valenti, and Michael Hurrle.

Cheers, I'm a big fan of the Destriero for many years. Since it won the Blue Riband in 1992 it disappeared from the public view. Does anyone here have news about the current location of the boat or any photos ? Best Regards.

Thanks for the picture! The smaller yacht outside Destriero looks like the 28 m Kalamoun from 1973 which was then the fastest diesel powered yacht with 46 knots. One of my favorites from Abeking & Rasmussen... It is just that the forward roof is a little longer than it was, so either it is another yacht, or she is extended?

Hi, i'm also a fan of the Destriero and since a long time i search pictures and information about it. It seems that she lays still at Devonport in Plymouth: http://www.merseyshipping.co.uk/photofeatures/irishcelticseas/england/destriero260806/destriero260806.htm Here is a picture of Google Earth Greetz

I might be mistaken, but is the boat pictured next to her "Fortuna" the x royal royal yacht of the king of Spain. Such a sad sight to see Yachts in such disrepair.
Nope, not Fortuna. Looks more like Shergar, but not exactly and she should have been refitted at Lürssen recently. I agree, sad to see both of them just sitting there.... The little one could be fun to have, but Destriero would be a costly toy!

I wonder what her berthing charges are? Someone is paying a lot of money for her to just ly there and rust.

Hi, AMG once again scores with this which is the correct Answer. AMG said: Thanks for the picture! So she was extended in both ends then, amazing job. It looks a little like Gilgenast may have been involved with this...?

the smaller yacht is the shergar
Hi, Welcome to Yachtforums Marc. Where did you get that info from? 11 days ago it was Kalamoun.

Garry Hartshorn

Garry Hartshorn Senior Member

I do believe that Marc is correct but it is many years since I have seen Shergar in the flesh so I could be wrong
Hi, I saw Shergar a few months ago at Lurssens. I got the info about what it was from a guy who was in DML on the day I posted the info. I took his info as being pretty reliable which is why I posted it. I do stand to be corrected however if this info proves to be wrong.
Hi, I found this: http://www.ajaxnetphoto.com/recent/051105_naval_fost_10/pages/page_31.html It confirms what I was told and wrote earlier that it is Kalamoun outside Destriero at Devonport.
There you go. It has been about 12 years since I last laid eyes on her myself, which by the way was in South Beach Marina in Miami
well it was the shergar up until 2004 which was the last time i walked past it

Yacht DESTRIERO then competed for the Blue Riband award in 1992, creating a still to be bettered speed record of 53.1 knots average from New York to England without refueling. Unfortunately, she as considered a ‘private yacht’ as opposed to a ‘commercial passenger vessel’ and denied the award. The ship was "laid up" in for the last 10 years, but was removed in February 2009[3], reportedly for After spending 10 years at the HMNB Devonport dockyard, Plymouth, England, motor yacht DESTRIERO was moved to the German Lürssen ship yard in 2009.
