If you want to lend your support, sponsorships are available, though HRYC is also accepting monetary donations or other contributions to award to the parade prize winners. The parade is free to watch. To register or learn more, visit https://hryc.com/christmas-boat-parade

Home for the Holidays Parade

Ormond Beach's annual Christmas parade is back.

The 30th-annual Home for the Holidays Parade will take place at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, and this year's theme is "Holiday Broadcasts." Parade participants are encouraged to portray their favorite scenes from movies, TV shows and more, according to the parade flyer. There will also be live bands, performances and a tree lighting at City Hall at 6 p.m.

The parade was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Winners will be chosen from the three categories of parade entries (walkers, vehicles and floats), and will receive cash award and prizes at a future City Commission meeting. In partnership with Ormond MainStreet, the city will also award The Presidents Cup to the best decorated float from a business.

The parade is about 1.5 miles long and will begin at Division Avenue and Ridgewood Avenue before turning north on Granada Boulevard. It will proceed east until Beach Street, where the parade will turn south to end in front of City Hall. This year's parade is sponsored in part by The Mower Depot and Realty Pros Assured.

Toys for Tots

The Casements, located at 25 Riverside Drive, is a drop-off location for Toys for Tots.

Bring new, unwrapped children's toys anytime between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and between 8 a.m. and noon on Saturdays. The last day to drop-off toys is Dec. 11.

Join a softball league

The Volusia County Senior Softball league will be playing at the Derbyshire Park and Sports Complex, located at 849 Derbyshire Road, beginning January.

The league has been running continuously for about 30 years, according to a press release, and is a 50 and older men's slow pitch, arc softball league. The cost to play is $55 per player, which covers the games, some award shirts and a picnic on the final night of the season ending playoffs. The league plays two nights a week — Tuesdays and Thursdays — with one set of games starting at 6:45 p.m. and another at 8 p.m. The season schedule runs for about 20 games, the press release states, with a league playoff and tournament at the end. Though the league takes a few weeks off between seasons, they do play year-round.

The league drafts new teams every season. Players are rated with a skill rating and then distributed across teams to keep drafts even and far.

"I've personally been involved with the league for 20 years as a player and a manager and as a league officer and it's really an outstanding group of people," said Tom Coriale, vice president of the Volusia County Senior Softball League, in the press release. "It's become a community of friends as well as athletes. To be able to hit a single or home run again and catch a fly ball or grounder keeps all of us at least feeling much younger than we look. It's definitely recreation, but everyone is out there to compete and win, just like little league."

Call League President Joe Daly at 954-732-0992 for more information.

A Tradition Open to All: The Daytona Christmas Boat Parade

UPDATE: The unnamed subtropical storm that swept through Florida last weekend may have postponed the Daytona Boat Parade, but it didn’t dampen Halifax River Yacht Club’s holiday spirit! The parade is now taking place this FRIDAY, December 22!

Daytona Beach, Florida 12/15/2023 The Christmas Boat Parade (originally scheduled for this Saturday December 16) has been postponed. Due to the imminent weather conditions for this weekend.

The Daytona Boat Parade will now be on the evening of Friday, Dec. 22

The parade route will be from Sea-breeze Bridge South to the Chart House. It will start as usual around 6 pm and make it’s way south.

The Parade is viewable anywhere along the river from start to end points.

Daytona Christmas Boat Parade Hosted By Halifax River Yacht Club

In 1982, a group of visionary individuals from the Marina Point Yacht Club set in motion what would become a beloved Daytona tradition. This iconic event, the Daytona Christmas Boat Parade, has since blossomed into a community favorite, captivating the hearts of residents and visitors alike. Its legacy is a testament to the power of unity and festive spirit that has ignited the waters of Daytona for over four decades.

The inspiration for this nautical celebration struck the Marina Point Yacht Club members after they witnessed the beauty of the Fort Lauderdale Christmas Boat Parade. Enchanted by the idea, they embarked on a journey to bring this magical experience to the shores of Daytona Beach. Under the leadership of Commodore Jeff Schulz, their combined endeavors led to the birth of a cherished tradition, one that found a warm embrace from both the community and yacht club members.

As time passed, the sail loft where it all began started to deteriorate. The yacht club recognized the need for change to ensure its survival. They took a daring step by acquiring a houseboat, meticulously refurbishing it to embody the elegance of a yacht club’s interior. This distinctive vessel found its home at City Marina, now known as the Halifax River Marina, and later, at English Jim’s Marina, today Caribbean Jack’s.

The parade faced a brief hiatus in its journey, but in 1995 and 1996, the Halifax Harbor Marina, supported by the Power Squadron, stepped up to the plate, breathing new life into the event. Twenty-five boats adorned the waterways, each hoping to claim prizes generously provided by local vendors. However, it was still in search of a permanent home.

In the year 2000, the Halifax River Yacht Club recognized the enduring significance of the Christmas Boat Parade and embarked on a mission to ensure its continuity. A dedicated committee was formed to take on the responsibilities required to orchestrate this beloved event.

Today, the Daytona Christmas Boat Parade stands as a highly anticipated community highlight during the holiday season. Captains of both sailboats and powerboats craft enchanting themes for their vessels, competing for prizes donated by generous local merchants. The competition has become fiercer each year, challenging the judges to assess boats based on each captain’s selected theme, originality, quality of execution, and overall visual impact. With each passing year, captains strive to surpass their previous entries, resulting in an evermore spectacular spectacle.

The Halifax River Yacht Club’s Christmas Boat Parade has seen remarkable growth over the years, with more participants and spectators lining the bridges and riverbanks to marvel at the creativity displayed on the decorated boats.

The parade route takes the boats from their assembly point north of the Seabreeze Bridge, guiding them southward towards the Halifax River Yacht Club before moving further south to the Halifax Harbor Marina, where judging takes place.

While the Halifax River Yacht Club is a private club with membership granted by the Board of Directors’ approval, it’s important to note that participating in the parade doesn’t require membership. This inclusive approach allows all boat owners to partake in the festivities, a cherished aspect of this event.

Mark your calendars for an unforgettable evening on Saturday, December 16, starting at 6:30 p.m. The boats will set sail from the Seabreeze Bridge in Daytona, creating a dazzling nighttime display of lights as they cruise down the Halifax River.

Don’t miss the daytona beach christmas boat parade.

Holiday cheer gets a nautical twist at the Daytona Beach Boat Parade, a favorite local tradition that’s back for another year on Saturday, December 5.

Take the whole family to watch as a festive fleet of boats passes by along the Halifax River. People line the bridges, causeways, and river shorelines in the area, and the parade culminates at the Halifax River Yacht Club. Boats will be extravagantly decked out with twinkling lights and holiday décor — a truly magical experience, completely free of charge for viewers.

Prizes are awarded for best power, sail, sound, first entry, and vessels under 25 feet.

Check out pictures and video footage from past celebrations.  But be warned: images aren’t nearly as magnificent as experiencing the lighted boats for yourself. Come soak in the spectacle and spread cheer in true Daytona Beach fashion — surrounded by water!

And with other Florida holiday experiences, such as Nights of Lights in St. Augustine and the fun spectacle of Surfing Santas in Cocoa Beach, so close (less than an hour drive) there’s even more reason to head to Daytona Beach for the holidays.

AT A GLANCE What: Daytona Beach Boat Parade When: Saturday, December 5, at 6 p.m. Where: Halifax River Yacht Club, 331 South Beach Street, Daytona Beach Admission: FREE

Holiday Boat Parade Calendar

By: Author Bob Rountree

Posted on Last updated: July 20, 2024

Thank you for visiting FloridaRambler.com for your holiday boat parade information. We have started updating this story for the 2024 holiday season.

Generally, boat parades are held the same weekend relative to the previous year. However, a calendar shift in 2024, a leap year, could disrupt normal schedules for some parades.

Exact dates will be updated and confirmed as soon as they are available.

  • Restaurants with outdoor dining are great places to view parades. Make reservations well in advance.
  • Drawbridges are closed to street traffic for hours to allow boats to pass. If you need to cross a bridge along the parade route, you need a plan.
  • Public parks along parade routes provide excellent viewing. Bring beach chairs.
  • Arrive early. Most boat parades start at dusk, between 6-7 pm.

100th Port Huron-to Mackinac Island Sailboat Race draws large crowds

E very year John Lusk meets his friends near the Port Huron Yacht Club, setting up camp in the shade of the same tree to watch the parade of boats heading to the start of the Port Huron-to-Mackinac Island Sailboat Race.

It's a fun tradition among the friends, but every year it seemed there were a few less boats than in the previous race. That was, until this year when they sat down to watch the centennial race. The 100 year celebration seemed to breathe new life into the race, drawing more boats, more sailors and more onlookers.

"We were just talking about the number of boats and how it's a throwback to previous years," Lusk said.

Sailboats from across the country were gathered on the Black River Monday to participate in the 100th Port Huron-to-Mackinac Island Sailboat Race. According to the race's website, 316 teams were registered to compete in the centennial race, about 100 more than joined in 2023.

This year's race follows the original course created in 1925, which will take boats north along the shoreline before heading west, passing south of Bois Blanc Island and finishing west to east at the finish line between Round Island and Mackinac Island. This course is 204 nautical miles.

Kenneth Tanner, a Grosse Pointe resident joining the race as part of the California Girl's crew, said he was proud to join in the 100th race. He said he also sailed in the 100th Chicago-to-Mackinac Island Boat Race in 2008.

"It's a classic race, and to do this for the centennial race is an honor," Tanner said.

It's Bobby Bloomfield's first time participating in the race, though he has experience from other races. He joined the crew of the Siochail through an acquaintance who recommended him for the sailing team.

Bloomfield is working with one of the most experienced sailors in the race, Brian Geraghty. He's participated in the race every year it was run for 44 years and was the historian for the Bayview Yacht Club.

Geraghty said he accepted Bloomfield on the team because he's from Chatman, Ontario and likes the recruit Canadians to join the race.

Right next to the Siochail was the Contender. Scott Graham, who travelled from Florida to Port Huron to participate in the race said this year it is taking place on his 50th anniversary, so it's an uniquely special occasion.

"It's a hallmark race and it's special to be joining with my dad," Graham said.

The Contender won the M Class race in 2016, a feat they're hoping they can pull of a second time.

Down the river is another team looking to add a win under their belts, the crew of the Pirate. Captain Jeff Henderson, another Florida resident, has won the Class P Cruising race running the 1925 course nine times in almost 50 years of competing.

"Each year is better than the year before," Henderson said.

Each crew member wears a shirt with a pirate on the back saying "Give us the island and no one gets hurt," a cheeky reference to their destination in the race. Henderson said his boat brings a long history with it, having been built in France in 1992 (the crew is sure this is lucky because crew member Pierre Fleury is a French native) and that he bought it in the British Virgin Islands.

"The trick is to be lucky, and to have the right crew when it matters," Henderson said.

The race can be tracked online at https://bycmack.com/tracking/ .

Yacht Club, which continues Saturday, is the first major rock and pop festival on Harriet Island since Live Nation’s River’s Edge Music Festival in 2012. Despite promising St. Paul a five-year commitment, the concert promoting giant lost enough money to convince them to pull out after a single year.

Live Nation owns 51% of Yacht Club organizers C3 Presents, an Austin, Texas, company that’s also behind Austin City Limits Music Festival, Voodoo Music + Arts Experience and the modern-day Lollapalooza. But Live Nation apparently allows C3 to follow its own path.

Some concertgoers complained about food and drink prices, and long lines, but in terms of getting in and around the site, the infrastructure and general vibe, C3’s experience in mounting festivals became quite clear by late Friday afternoon, when Joan Jett and the Blackhearts played an hourlong set to a large, grinning and dancing crowd. (Organizers did not release an attendance number, but have said they expect more than 30,000 people each of the two days.)

On Thursday, Yacht Club’s social media announced reunited Southern rockers the Black Crowes had pulled out of their planned set at 8 p.m. Friday due to “illness in the band.” (The Crowes, however, did not address their absence online.) Rather than drafting an 11th hour replacement, the festival reworked the schedule and gave several acts more time on stage. Local band Durry got pushed nearly two hours later into the schedule for a set that started at 5:40, while Seattle indie folk act the Head and the Heart graduated to the Black Crowes’ planned 8 p.m. slot.

Local favorites Gully Boys opened the festival at 1 p.m. on the main stage followed by fellow homegrown act Harbor and Home on the smaller stage. From that point on, performances alternated between the two stages, with just minutes between bands.

Sets from buzzy country artist Morgan Wade and indie rockers Michigander paved the way for Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, who earned cheers for their famous covers “Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah),” “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll,” “Crimson and Clover” and “Everyday People” as well as band originals “I Hate Myself for Loving You” and “Bad Reputation.” They also covered the Replacements’ “Androgynous,” with Jett giving a shout out to the late Minneapolis band and their leader Paul Westerberg.

RELATED: What to know if you’re headed to the Minnesota Yacht Club Festival

St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter took the stage prior to Gwen Stefani’s performance and asked the crowd to applaud the police and other city workers who helped make the festival happen. He also suggested it would return for a second year in 2025.

Stefani — who was promoted as a headliner along with Friday’s final act Alanis Morissette and Saturday’s main attraction the Red Hot Chili Peppers — performed with dancers and video at what sounded like a louder volume than the previous bands. She told the audience her brother-in-law is from Minnesota, so that sort of makes her a local. She then pulled out her husband, former “The Voice” coach Blake Shelton, to sing their current single “Purple Irises.”

It’s been some 18 years since her last substantial solo hit, but Stefani has remained in the spotlight thanks to her high-profile husband and the semi-regular duet singles they’ve released over the last eight years. Stefani and her band No Doubt reunited in April to headline Coachella to much acclaim, but have yet to announce any future plans together. Whatever happens, Friday’s crowd — which was heavy on geriatric millennials and Gen Xers with a smattering of boomers — gave Stefani a warm reception that matched the ideal summertime weather that graced the festival on Friday.
