It is the fastest option to visit the Laguna San Rafael. The modern touristic catamaran is twice as fast as other crafts. It stays less time in front of the glacier, but offers the possibility to see with daylight the fjords and channels between Puerto Chacabuco and the Laguna San Rafael.

The check-in is at 07:00 at the harbour. The catamaran leaves at 08:00 and takes the passengers along islands, channels and fjords until finally arriving to the amazing Laguna San Rafael around two in the afternoon. If the weather conditions allow it, the passengers are taken in zodiac boats to get a closer look at the San Rafael Glacier and its many icebergs that float scattered in the lagoon. At the end of the excursion, a delicious whisky is served with millenary ice. The visit to the lagoon itself lasts between 2 to 3 hours, and afterwards starts the trip back to Puerto Chacabuco, ending the excursion around 9 PM.

There are departures scheduled all year round, less frequent in winter. The dates are irregular, but more often on Monday, Friday and Saturday

The navigation is made in a comfortable catamaran called "Aysén". It allows you to enjoy the nature from its climatized interiors, comfortable bars or from the exterior decks.

The rates are per person and include full board (breakfast, appetizers, lunch, tea time and cocktail), excursion in zodiacs between the icebergs, whisky with "millenary ice".

Special rates: During low season (see departure calendar), there is a limited number of spots offered at special rates. When these tickets are sold, for the remaining spots the normal rate is charged. So it is recommended to book well in advance.

CRUISING CHILE FJORDS TO LAGUNA SAN RAFAEL GLACIER

A cruise through Chile's inside passage on the Chaiten Catamaran is an enjoyable day-trip from Loberias del Sur Hotel in Puerto Chacabuco. Located in the Aysen region of Chilean Patagonia, the 60-room hotel offers a four-day Glacier Classic Program.

The package includes the two-hour transfer to and from Coyhaique/Balmaceda Airport (code: BBA). It features buffet breakfasts and daily dinners, guided hiking and a Patagonian lamb barbeque.

The highlight is the full-day cruise to San Rafael Lagoon National Park on the 100-passenger ship operated by Catamaranes del Sur. Following the Moraleda Channel, our boat threaded its way between forested islands that are actually the verdant tops of the submerged coastal Andean range.

Our catamaran's double hulls noisily parted a flotilla of bergy bits after we entered Laguna San Rafael. It sounded like the ship was plowing through gravel.

Blue icebergs

As we cruised farther into the inlet, the icebergs grew more immense and more colorful. We searched for words to describe their hues: menthol-blue, ice-blue, powder-blue, baby-blue, mint-blue, stained-glass-window blue.

A thundering crash diverted our attention to the source of the crystalline mountains of ice: the San Rafael Glacier. It calved a house-sized iceberg, which slipped into the sea, creating a cloud of spray and undulating ripples that gently rocked our boat. Black-backed gulls flocked to the site to scoop up fish stunned by the impact.

Chilean National Park

Stretching three kilometers across and up to 70 meters high, the glacier is the focal point of the 1.7-million-hectare Parque Nacional Laguna San Rafael. The icy tongue is only an offshoot of the massive Northern Patagonian Ice Field.

At the end of the last Ice Age, its retreating glaciers eroded the valley bottoms to such a degree that the ocean eventually flooded them, giving rise to the fjords that now splinter the coast.

Zodiac ride

Backed by the 4,058-meter-high Monte San Valentin, the highest peak in the southern Andes, the glacier was an intimidating spectacle when viewed from a tiny Zodiac.

Aboard the rubber raft, we felt minuscule next to the jagged fragments of floating ice. Somber clouds gathered like heavy curtains over the glacier. Without the sun, the blue colors were even more intense.

30,000-year-old ice cubes

We zoomed along the glacier's crevassed facade, darting between wallowing icebergs. A curious black face popped out of the water and eyed us intently. Satisfied, the seal dove back in, only to poke his ebony head out of the sea on the other side of our Zodiac.

A crew member used a pronged stick to coax a punchbowl-sized iceberg into a net bag, which he hauled into the boat. With our booty stowed onboard, we navigated back to the ship.

As the Chaiten Catamaran departed from San Rafael Lagoon, the bartender chopped the chunk of 30,000-year-old glacial ice to cool our pisco sours — Chile's margarita-like national drink made from grape brandy. We raised our glasses in a toast to one of the world's most awesome fjord cruises.

With its mountains, glaciers and fjords, Chile's filigreed southwest coast is indeed something to celebrate.

TOUR a LAGUNA SAN RAFAEL y GLACIAR desde Puerto Chacabuco

Cuando hablé en esta entrada sobre el Glaciar Perito Moreno expliqué que la zona sur de Chile y Argentina tenían un tesoro de hielo compartido: el campo de hielo patagónico sur . Bien, pues Chile tiene para el solo otro espacio natural único, el campo de hielo norte. Localizado en la región de Aysén, el campo de hielo patagónico norte, con 120 km de largo por 60 de ancho, es uno de los destinos de turismo más requeridos del país, especialmente por uno de sus glaciares, el San Rafael. A este glaciar es posible acceder a través de un tour a la Laguna San Rafael.

En este artículo voy a contar mi experiencia con el tour a la Laguna San Rafael desde Puerto Chacabuco (que realicé con Loberías del Sur).

Desde que lo vi en los mapas, quise ir hasta él: el campo de hielo patagónico norte se mostraba aislado, misterioso. Localizado cerca de la localidad de Puerto Río Tranquilo, estuve indagando cómo llegar hasta él. Descubrí que había dos opciones, las cuales cuento a continuación.

Para realizar el tour a la laguna San Rafael existen dos posibilidades: desde Puerto Río Tranquilo o desde Puerto Chacabuco . Desde Río Tranquilo, una parte del tour es por tierra y otra por mar, desde Bahía Exploradores. La ruta desde Puerto Chacabuco, situado más al norte, es toda entera por mar.

Yo opté por la de Puerto Chacabuco porque la experiencia de navegar por los canales y fiordos del sur de Chile es una de las mejores vivencias que se pueden realizar en el país (semanas antes ya había hecho el viaje en barco con la transbordadora de TABSA desde Puerto Williams, en la Isla Navarino , hasta Punta Arenas y desde Puerto Natales a Caleta Tortel).

Puerto Chacabuco es una pequeña localidad marítima a escasos kilómetros de Puerto Aysén. El pueblo se encuentra enclavado al fondo de un conjunto de fiordos que invitan a navegarlos, a perderse en ellos.

Para realizar la excursión a laguna San Rafael existe la posibilidad de alojarse en Puerto Aysén y acercarse en vehículo o alojarse en Puerto Chacabuco en el único alojamiento del lugar, el espectacular hotel Loberías del Sur.

Pros y contras de alojarse en Puerto Chacabuco frente a Puerto Aysén.

• El tour dura todo el día, desde las 7 AM hasta las 9 PM, por lo que, si no se dispone de vehículo propio, quizá sea complicado acercarse desde Puerto Aysén.
• Disfrutar de la belleza de las vistas del fiordo en el que se encuentra Puerto Chacabuco.
• Pasar, al menos, un par de noches en Loberías del Sur, uno de los alojamientos más bonitos de la región.
• El principal contra que verán algunos viajeros será el precio de pernoctar en Loberías del Sur, pues los precios son los de un hotel de alta calidad, superiores a los de otros alojamientos de los alrededores.

Para los que duden, decir que recomiendo, aunque suponga un esfuerzo, pasar al menos una noche (la previa o la posterior a la excursión) en Loberías y poder disfrutar de sus instalaciones, su mirador y su espectacular cena de buffet.

La expedición al glaciar San Rafael comenzó temprano: a las 7 ya estabamos embarcando en uno de los dos catamaranes de Loberías del Sur. Por delante nos quedaban más de 12 horas de expedición a través de canales patagónicos, entre delfines, ballenas, volcanes y témpanos de hielo.

El viaje no se sintió largo en ningún momento, pese a las 4 horas de navegación (solo ida) que se tarda en recorrer las 125 millas náuticas que separan Puerto Chacabuco del glaciar San Rafael. Esto fue debido a la espectacularidad de los paisajes; a la presencia de los guías, que estuvieron constantemente explicando historias sobre el glaciar, los alrededores y la región de Aysén; y a los constantes momentos de comida que hubo durante la travesía desayuno, aperitivo, almuerzo, brindis con hielo del glaciar, picoteo y barra libre.

Para los amantes de la fotografía y los más inquietos, decir que se puede salir al exterior del catamarán para poder disfrutar de las vistas. Durante la travesía pudimos ver volcanes, como el Macá, la naturaleza salvaje de la costa patagónica, ballenas (estas no las vi, porque en ese momento me encontraba dentro, pero sí hubo personas que las vieron). Pero lo más espectacular sucedió al acercarnos al territorio del campo de hielo norte, con sus picos escarpados y cubiertos de nieve.

Conforme nos acercábamos a la mal llamada laguna San Rafael (porque no lo es, ya que está conectada con el resto del fiordo a través del río de los Témpanos), comenzamos a ver los primeros cascotes de hielo flotante, provenientes del glaciar. En ese tramo fue cuando pudimos ver, a lo lejos y durante unos breves segundos, los hielos del glaciar Gualas.

Fue entrando al río de los Témpanos cuando la presencia del glaciar se hizo más evidente. Los témpanos fueron creciendo en tamaño conforme nos acercábamos a la laguna y, finalmente, al penetrar en ella, allí apareció, a lo lejos, con sus 2 kilómetros de ancho, el glaciar San Rafael .

La excitación en el barco fue aumentando conforme nos acercábamos. Nos habían confirmado que sería posible acercarse en botes zodiac y ya estábamos los miembros del primer grupo con los salvavidas colocados. Alrededor, témpanos enormes, tan grandes como el barco, brillaban con luz azul.

Los motores del catamarán se pararon y la tripulación preparó la zodiac, a la que nos subimos pocos minutos después. Nervios. Cámaras preparadas.

El hielo se oía crujir bajo el bote conforme rasgaba el agua. Nos acercamos hacia uno de los témpanos y tocamos el hielo (dieron ganas de lamerlo, de sorberlo). Finalmente, nos colocamos en la posición máxima de cercanía al glaciar, a unos 50-60 metros. El azul vibraba bajo la luz cetrina que permitían las nubes que, en ese momento, estaban tapando el sol.

Tras 10 minutos de experiencia volvimos al catamarán, donde esperamos a que saliesen los otros grupos de zodiacs (en total se formaron 4 grupos) mientras fotografiábamos el glaciar de todas la formas posibles.

Una vez todos estuvimos de nuevo en el catamarán, pusimos rumbo de vuelta, brindando con un whiskey on the rocks hecho con hielo de cascotes flotantes de la laguna . Tras más comida y barra libre y algo de música como colofón final, llegamos de vuelta al Loberías del Sur, donde solo quedaba volver a disfrutar de la cena buffet mientras se repasaba mentalmente las imágenes captadas durante el día.

Buenos días Daniel, muchísimas gracias por la explicación. Estoy comparando este tour con el de Destino Patagonia que sale desde Puerto Tranquilo que parece «menos explotado». Contemplaste hacerlo con ellos? Te quería preguntar si este tour te lo ha patrocinado la empresa, creo que los autores de contenido lo deberíais publicar, sería un indicador de transparencia para vuestros seguidores. Seguramente la mayoría de las veces quedaréis contentos igual pero sería una indicación para vuestros seguidores. Espero que no te moleste ya que me gusta mucho lo que publicas. Un abrazo, Neus.

antes de nada, mil gracias por recordarme una cosa: olvidé añadir el texto al pie donde indico las ocasiones en las que ha habido patrocinio. En efecto, el viaje con Loberías fue finalmente patrocinado. Digo finalmente porque la intención era realizar la navegación con ellos en cualquier caso. Días antes había pasado por Río Tranquilo y sopesé hacerlo desde Valle Exploradores. Esos días estuve sopesando cuál hacer y, aunque mandé propuesta a ambos, sabía que aunque no saliese un patrocinio, iba a hacerlo igualmente. Me decanté por el de Puerto Chacabuco por dos razones: la principal, que se realiza más tiempo de navegación y, tras haber estado semanas antes navegando por los canales fueguinos con las dos barcazas de TABSA, quería volver a hacer una navegación (los paisajes desde el mar en Chile son alucinantes). La otra razón es que, al contrario de lo que comentas, me dio la impresión de que la expedición desde Tranquilo está más saturada. Ahí hay muchas empresas (de hecho demasiadas para un pueblito tan pequeño) que ofrecen expediciones (a las Capillas, al valle exploradores, al San Rafael…). Tras hacer el de Capillas y ver el caos que había por la saturación (mi barca salió más tarde de lo esperado por acumulación de viajeros, perjudicando un poco a las fotos de después) decidí que no quería hacer otra expedición desde Tranquilo (que está más cerca del San Rafael, por lo que, en teoría, sería el lugar natural desde el que hacerlo). En cuanto a los precios desde Tranquilo salen más baratos en general (aunque depende del tramo de pasajeros que lo hayan contratado, en Loberías puede salir al mismo precio), el posible incremento no me importaba mucho de haberlo pagado yo, ya que la navegación en sí misma y todo lo que cuidan los organizadores la expedición (comidas, explicación de los guías) también lo justificaba. ¡Espero haberte ayudado un poco en tu elección!

Muchas gracias Daniel. Primero por la honestidad y segundo por la aclaración de ambos tours. No sé porque pensaba que los que salían de Río Tranquilo al ser grupos más pequeños serían «menos turísticos».

Por ejemplo lo del karaoke de Loberías son cosas que me hechan un poco para atrás pero bueno, cuando uno quiere visitar ciertos lugares y tiene que hacerlo con una agencia/ tour tiene que tragar con ciertas cosas, jeje.

Te cuento: actualmente mi blog es mi forma de trabajo, es decir, me dedico de forma profesional al blog, redes sociales y escritura de notas y artículos para diversos medios. La expedición al glaciar (que hice con mi chica, que también es blogger profesional) fue previo contacto y negociación con la empresa, en la que hubo un intercambio de servicios laborales (creación de contenido y publicidad). Para realizar este tipo de acciones es necesario que el blog tenga cierta autoridad: visitas (actualmente ambos nos encontramos sobre las 70.000 visitas mensuales), DA (Domain Authority, un valor que se realiza para medir la autoridad frente a Google de una web y en el que la antigüedad, posicionamiento de sus artíulos, visitas son algunos de los puntos que tiene en cuenta) y relevancia en redes sociales. No sé las caractarísticas del blog de tu hijo. Si sus valores son altos, puede sopesar mandar una propuesta, si es un blog recién comenzado (es decir, DA bajo, pocas visitas y redes sociales con poco alcance) es bastante complicado.

Hola Daniel, antes de nada, perdona por la tardanza. Me ha coincidido con la vuelta de un viaje de varios meses de Sudamérica y mudanza de Madrid a Galicia… No, no hay tours diarios a San Rafael. Hola buenas, estoy pensando en tomar este tour, pero mi duda es si tomarlo desde puerto chacabuco o desde puerto tranquilo ¿cuál es la mejor expriencia o ambas son igual de increibles? desde puerto chacabuco sale desde hoteles loberias, pero desde puerto tranquilo ¿que tal son los catamaranes?

Hola, Francisco, muchas gracias por tu comentario. Como comento en el artículo, yo solo tengo la experiencia de hacerlo desde Chacabuco. Desde Río Tranquilo la excursión es mixta, parte por tierra, parte por mar, mientras que desde Chacabuco es por mar. Respecto a cuál es mejor… sinceramente, creo que ambas tienen motivos para ser espectaculares simplemente por el territorio que recorren. Si quieres tener una experiencia pura de mar, el de Chacabuco es buena opción, si quieres también ver el interior del territorio, la expedición desde Tranquilo sería la idónea.

The calm of its 170 Km2 that forms the lagoon, with floating icebergs and the snowstorm with its constants and uproarious ice loosenings of thousands of years, are the main attractive of the route. On board from our zodiac boats, will leave for the still more near encounter of the San Rafael snowstorm and the numerous icebergs that float around it. At the end of the excursion you will be able to enjoy an exquisite Whisky with millenarian ice that dates from more than 20,000 years.

Day 1 Santiago-Balmaceda- Puerto Chacabuco: Reception at Balmaceda Airport and transfer to Hotel Loberias del Sur, located in Puerto Chacabuco. To get there you will go across part of the Austral Road, which goes through Llanquihue and Palena provinces, on the side of the continent, up to Aysen region, passing by the beautiful city of Coyhaique. On the ride to the hotel, you will have the opportunity to appreciate a small sample of this astonishing landscape that makes part of these latitudes, as we will cross the Andes mountain range through the Chilean Patagonia.

Arrival to Hotel Loberias del Sur having the beautiful bay of Puerto Chacabuco as scenery. You will stay three nights in the hotel.

At nightfall a Welcome Dinner will be offered in the hotel, including appetizers, main course, dessert and coffee.

Day 2 Laguna San Rafael: At 8:00 a.m. you will take part of an unforgettable trip on board of a catamaran that will take you across islands, channels, and fiords inside unimaginable scenery until reaching the marvelous Laguna San Rafael at about 2:00 p.m. The main tour attraction is the peacefulness of this lagoon with a surface of 170 square kilometers, floes and snowdrifts letting millenary ice rocks fall down constantly and thunderously. Then on board of a zodiac you will get in closer contact with San Rafael snowdrift and a number of floes moving around. Upon the end of the excursion you will taste a whisky on the rocks with cubes of ice being more than 20,000 years old. You will stay there for 2 - 3 hours and then will go back to Puerto Chacabuco, where you will be at about 9:00 p.m. Back in the hotel, you will enjoy a refreshing relax time after a long day full of magic and unforgettable emotions..

Day 3 Visit to "Aiken del Sur" Private Park: At 10:00 a.m. in the morning a bus will take you from Hotel Loberias del Sur to the Aiken del Sur Private Park across a landscape of unique beauty in the Patagonia. You will start there an excursion combining adventure, close contact with Patagonian virgin nature, emotion, and the tasteful local food (Patagonian barbecues).

The Aiken del Sur Park offers natural beauties such as the area on the shore of Lago Riesco. The lake has a surface of 14 km2, quiet and blue crystal clear waters; a waterfall 22 meters high; native woodlands with perennial species, annual plants, humid species such as a ferns, some of them first found in Chile, moss and liverworts; widespread prairies where aged myrtles and tepa trees as chilco and calafate mix together; taro and mallin plants; swamp lands.

The park has been adequately implemented for providing comfort to visitors. It consists of:

*Visitors' Center equipped with sanitary services for women, men, and impaired people, a first aid room, handicraft shop and interactive exhibitions giving information on local flora, fauna and anthropology. Visitors will be hosted by bilingual guides who will escort them all over the visit.

*Three natural properly paved footpaths with catwalks, fencing, bridges, observatory points, and resting places that will give information on the biogeographical history of each place by means of educational stations. There you will enjoy the wonderful sceneries of the lake, river and hills that make up the Andes mountain range in the Patagonia. You will also have the opportunity to hear the singing of some of local birds such as Chucao and Hueta birds.

*A Quincho, which is a typical Patagonian lounge, with capacity for over 140 people consisting of a main fireplace for preparing the traditional "Patagonian Lamb Barbecue" and a bar for tasting a pisco sour reception toast and the finest Chilean wines. This location also has sanitary services for women, men and impaired people and a local handicraft shop as well.

*The lunch (barbecue) to be served at the Quincho lounge will be cheered up by a local folk group. After lunch, visitors may have a rest or walk across the other two footpaths in the park, which have a low difficulty. Later on a previously agreed time, visitors will be taken back to the hotel for relaxing after a long day full of unforgettable experiences and adventures. At nightfall you can taste a pleasant dinner, which is a proper opportunity for talking about the day's adventures; all this accompanied by the best seafood and finest wines.

Day 4 Optional Excursion : After an abundant breakfast at the hotel, visitors may choose one of the three following excursion:

Horse riding across the valley of Simpson River, approximately one hour away from the hotel on the way to Coyhaique. Amid a spectacular landscape in Simpson valley we arrive at a typical Patagonian hacienda where a guided tour will be made to visit the mansion house and accommodation houses which have been preserved exactly as they were built. After visiting the house and nearby area, a box lunch will be served, which includes from pisco sour to coffee. After lunch, the group will go through the hacienda on horseback amid unforgettable autochthonous woodlands, rivers and landscapes. The tour takes about three hours, including some stops for eating snacks and relaxing. Flora and fauna is impressive and visitors will be able to watch any species of birds, rabbits, hares and other local animals.

Fishing on Simpson River, approximately one hour away from the hotel on the way to Coyhaique. Amid a spectacular landscape in Simpson valley we arrive at a typical Patagonian hacienda where a guided tour will be made to visit the mansion house and accommodation houses which have been preserved exactly as they were built. After visiting the house and nearby area, a box lunch will be served, which includes from pisco sour to coffee. After lunch, the guides will take fishermen to a specific fishing place starting at Simpson river. Fishermen will be provided with fishing rods, flies, fishhooks, clothing and will be trained on the technique for fly fishing or trolling. Over the excursion that may take about three hours, a pause will taken for having a snack or relaxing (fishing must be always carried out in the afternoon).

Day 5 Trip Back to Santiago : After a well-deserved night rest in the comfortable guestrooms at Hotel Loberías del Sur and a breakfast, visitors will be taken to Balmaceda Airport for the flight back to Santiago.
