A brief history of the one and only Hobe Sound | Historical Vignettes
Early history of the region that would eventually be Hobe Sound involves Jobe (Jove) Indians, land grants, treaties, acquisitions or other transactions of properties, too numerous and complicated to detail.
Although there may be discrepancies, forthwith is an abbreviated, simplified summary of facts and noted events.
The name is supposedly derived from the Spaniards' pronunciation of Jobe, as 'ho-bay,' which evolved into Hobe.
Long before European settlement, these Native Americans inhabited the coastal region of Florida from the vicinity of the Indian and St. Lucie rivers southward, encompassing about 100 miles.
Probably the first Caucasians that the Jobes encountered were Spaniards, as Ponce de Leon claimed all of La Florida for Spain in April 1513. Spain would retain possession of Florida for centuries.

In September 1696, the British barkentine three-masted ship, 'Reformation,' sailing from Jamaica enroute to Philadelphia, was struck by a hurricane and wrecked close to shore, north of what would be Jupiter Inlet.
On board were 25 passengers and crew with supplies, such as molasses, beef, rum and sugar. Among passengers were Jonathan Dickinson and family.
Receiving assistance from the Jobe Indians, the voyagers proceeded north in a small boat salvaged from the wrecked barkentine.
The area was first referred to as Hobe Sound about 1699, but in 1763, the entire peninsula of La Florida would be acquired by England after the Anglo-Spanish War, then ceded back to Spain at the end of the American Revolution in 1783.
Florida would eventually be a territory of the United States with the Adams-Onis (Florida Purchase) Treaty signed Feb. 22, 1819, and ratified by Spain's government and the U.S. Congress by February 1821.
Iin 1790, Spain had offered grants of land to certain individuals as a reward and to encourage settlement in the Florida colony.
“For services to crown,” Don Eusebio Gomez, a merchant-shipper and defender of St. Augustine, was one such land grantee in 1815. This royal grant of 12,000 acres included what would be Jupiter Island and an 8,000-acre tract of land on the mainland, Hobe Sound.
Hidden asset
When the United States assumed control of Florida, it agreed to honor land grants. Gomez's claim, however, was challenged for various reasons, eventually to be settled by the U.S. Supreme Court. He attained clear title 20 years later, with the properties undeveloped.
It is not known if Don Eusebio Gomez ever visited the bestowed land, but rather considered it a hidden asset. He sold 8,000 acres of the property, excluding Jupiter Island, to Joseph Delespine for $1 an acre, who the following year disposed of half the acreage to Michael Lazarus for $4,000.
Just two years later, Lazarus sold all interest in his 4,000 undeveloped acres for the unbelievable sum of $50,000. Gomez left Florida for Cuba, with 4,000 granted acres, including Jupiter Island, unsold.
Pineapples and coconuts
In 1892, a group of Englishmen bought land from Don Eusebio Gomez's heirs, intending to develop a pineapple plantation, as the Indian River Pineapple and Coconut Growers Association, or simply IRPCGA.
Sales of coconuts from existing palms was minimally successful on Jupiter Island. By 1895, with the construction of Flagler's railway, at least 50 individuals would have flourishing pineapple plots in Hobe Sound.
Hobe Sound grows
About 1896, John H. Grant and wife established the first inn, Highlander, located on an elevated section of the mainland, 72 feet above the surrounding landscape, permitting spectacular views.
There were a few homes in Hobe Sound by the early 1900s, with a railroad station, post office operated by John Grant and an ice plant. The inn would eventually be called Pine Hill and after 1922, Wigwam Hotel, which was destroyed by fire in '28.
Travel was primarily by boat.
The Hobe Sound Yacht Club at Beach Road on Jupiter Island was founded at the turn of the 20th century, mostly as a social group. Indian River Association built a water and electric plant and the first Hobe Sound Bridge, plus dredge a ferry landing near Gleason Street until the bridge to Jupiter Island was completed.
Many fishermen owned camps along the riverbanks.
In the late 1890s and early 20th century, actor Joseph Jefferson, with a home in West Palm Beach, promoted and enjoyed fishing around Hobe Sound, sometimes staying at son Charles' residence there.
Performers' enclave
Jefferson had plans to establish an "enclave" for theatrical performers in Hobe Sound, long before the advent of motion pictures. He hoped actors, actresses, directors, managers and other stage people would build homes and live in what would be named Jeffersonville.
Unfortunately, the theater community never materialized.
Hobe Sound firsts
The first Caucasian to be born at home in Hobe Sound was Dorothy Powell, Aug. 1, 1912; sister, Florence, was born Aug. 6, 1914, and died in December 2005.
Telephone service in Hobe Sound, as in Stuart, was initiated in 1915.
Indian River Association sold its accumulated 7,300 acres to the Hobe Sound Co., Jan. 1, 1920, including the townsite of Hobe Sound, electric, water, sewage systems, golf links, hotel and undeveloped land.
Hobe Sound's 'Hollywood'
By 1924, during the booming '20s, Olympia Improvement Corp. initiated grand plans to develop Hobe Sound into a 'Hollywood' movie-making center, attracting attention from investors and the public.
Concrete light poles with unwired lamps lined streets named with a Greek theme: Olympus, Zeus, Athena, Apollo, Adonis, Mercury, Mars.
Hobe Sound would be known as Olympia, with a section called Picture City for development of the movie industry. Devastating hurricanes in 1926 and '28 shattered those entrepreneurial plans.
In 1933, the Olympia holdings were sold to the Hobe Sound Co.'s stockholders, including Joseph V. Reed and William Barstow.
Hobe Sound Co. buyout
Within about four years, Reed bought out virtually all the stockholders, assuming control of the company. For the next 65 years, the Reed family managed the Hobe Sound Co. Its three primary assets were the original water plant, Jupiter Island Club and the remaining unsold Gomez Grant real estate, including property in mainland Hobe Sound.
The nation's wealthy citizens established beautiful winter homes on Jupiter Island.
Andrew Lester had built Olympia Ice Co. in 1925 and in the 1930s, Hobe Sound, with many year-round residents, enjoyed a community hall, highlighting local vaudeville acts, and a baseball field, featuring electric lights, installed in 1932.
A grocery and drug store, owned and operated by Clifford A. St. Onge, was established in 1933.
Talking pictures were first shown Tuesday, Jan. 1, 1935 at the Tangerine Hall, near Island Inn on Jupiter Island.
Camp Murphy
In 1942, during World War II, Camp Murphy was constructed in Hobe Sound as a training facility for the U.S. Army Signal Corps. The purpose of the 10,000-acre base was to train men in how to operate and repair RADAR equipment.
Approximately 10,000 men passed through its gates; the facility closed in 1944, having fulfilled its goal for the war effort. Many local civilian residents had either worked at the camp or provided services and supplies in local shops.
After the war, the base's property was acquired by the state to eventually be Jonathan Dickinson State Park.
The former barracks, classrooms and office buildings of Camp Murphy were auctioned, sold and transported to various locations in Martin County, several in Hobe Sound, such as Diamond’s Garage, Perky Pelican, Tackle Shop and a hairdresser’s salon; some would be remodeled as homes.
Tourist attractions
Through the years, there have been several notable tourist attractions in Hobe Sound, such as William 'Wild Bill' Meredith's Seminole Indian Village and Zoo, on U.S. 1 in the '30s, Algozzini's highway shell-souvenir 'stand' and a landmark restaurant, Harry and the Natives.
Hobe Sound was even recognized nationally with the construction of the revolutionary 'bubble' houses in 1953 on Zeus Crescent.
Both Hobe Sound and Jupiter Island have benefited by wealthy and generous residents, some of great fame with magnificent homes or estates.
These communities boast, among many attributes, beautiful public beaches with an attractive, unforgettable Banyon tree canopy over Bridge Road, picturesque Blowing Rocks Preserve and a National Wildlife Refuge, having a mere population of about 15,000.
Also, as a trivial fact, there is no other location in the U.S. named Hobe Sound.

The Soundings Yacht & Tennis Club HOA Hobe Sound, Florida
In 1815, the King of Spain, for services rendered bestowed upon Don Eusebius Gomez, designated a tract of land which became known as the Gomez Grant. It originally covered 12,000 acres and remained unsettled until after the Seminole Wars. Heirs of Don Gomez sold the land, part of which is now The Soundings Yacht & Tennis Club.
In 1974, an association of property owners was formed as provided for in the Protective Covenants. The association was named The Soundings Yacht & Tennis Club, Inc. Articles of Incorporation were filed on July 16, 1974.
There are 153 home sites in The Soundings. The natural beauty of the area is enhanced by the Wildlife Preserve to the east, Jonathan Dickinson State Park to the south, and our own Mangrove Island at the end of the canals.
