Reservations are easy, Boarding was on time and easy. Departure and Return was right on schedule. Great audio of local history and info about the Missouri River. Very enjoyable and reasonable price. They do serve beverages aboard the boat.

We booked the one-hour "happy hour" cruise. There was nothing wrong with it per se--we were seated on the top deck (arrive at least 30 minutes early to get a spot in line), the boat left on time, etc. But we were expecting a narrated tour, and what we got instead was less than 20 minutes of choppy, pre-recorded audio about the Lewis & Clark expedition. Rather than a story, it seemed to be a series of separate clips, each introduced with its own music, lasting a sentence or two, and then with a music outro, followed by a bit of silence before the next clip. We could have gotten the same information on Wikipedia--the fact that it was on the riverboat added precisely nothing to our understanding or experience. For the rest of the cruise, the speakers played 80s and 90s pop music. We were expecting some of the narration to be about what we were passing on the shore, but there was none...possibly because the scenery on the shore wasn't all that special either: some nice homes and a restaurant, but that was about it. There were a few interesting buildings, bridges and parks that probably had stories behind them, but those remained untold. Also be aware that the riverboat is actually a modern motorized vessel made to sort of resemble a paddle-wheeler. The faux paddlewheels on the sides are just for effect, though. They turn even when the boat is at the dock. All in all, it was not an unpleasant trip, but more of a tourist trap than a memorable experience. Unless you really have an urge to cruise a fairly mundane section of the Missouri River, save your money and visit the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center in Bismarck instead.

What a fun adventure! A small group of us did the sunset tour last night and it did not disappoint! The boat was super clean and adorable! The staff was extremely friendly and there was a full bar on board! The River was absolutely beautiful. I would suggest doing the sunset tour, as the views were breathtaking. I could not get over the cotton candy sky while we were slowly cruising down the river. I would say this is a must if you find yourself in Bismarck. Such a cool experience! I give it 4 stars instead of 5 because my drinks were horrible. I asked for a margarita and it was the smallest amount of tequila and then filled the rest of the way with a mixer that was so sweet, I couldn't even drink it. We tried again and told them about it, and the second one was just as bad and pretty much went straight in the garbage. So that was a huge bummer. Other than that, this was a really fun activity! I'd recommend it to everyone!

The ticket price is $19 and to me it's worth it. The tour length is 1.5 hours and we opted for the sunset tour. It goes down the Missouri River at a slow pace and serves refreshments, cocktails, snacks. Other cruise options have dinner, pizza, theme nights. I wish that a tour guide might come on staff and give some local insight and history, but it was fine also being quite and just enjoying the beautiful scenery.

While my boyfriend was slaving away in the North Dakota heat, I decided to entertain myself by taking a trip down the Missouri River on the Lewis & Clark Riverboat. I booked the 3-4 pm Thursday, and it was just the right amount of people. The upper deck is shaded, but after a good 10 minutes in that humidity, I retired to the lower deck, which was nicely air conditioned. There's a bar on the lower deck with beer/wine, sodas, water, and snacks. One of the employees also goes up top to take drink orders before the cruise begins. The cruise takes 1 hour, and it's a very calm and nice ride, accompanied by recorded facts of the area and of Lewis & Clark's expedition. I would probably recommend an evening cruise if you're looking to relax and have a romantic time with your significant other. The cruise itself is nothing special, but it's a good way to see the Missouri River up close, and the experience is fun. For only $13.95, I would definitely recommend it.

We just enjoyed a beautiful sunset cruise on the riverboat. It was a thoroughly enjoyable cruise -- so relaxing. The cruise was 1.5 hours of slowly gliding down the river and back. They serve beverages and snacks downstairs. We sat upstairs near the rear. It was perfect.

We booked the 6pm dinner evening cruise for a Sunday night. We got there at 5:45 the top of the boat was already filled up so we had to sit downstairs inside. Didn't bother us as it has ample windows and cool AC. When the boat first went off the downstairs seemed really loud with the motor right under us, but once we got cruising it was fine. The "dinner" cruise is two slices of pizza: cheese, pepperoni, or sausage. There's a bar once you walk in. We only had beer which is $4 a piece. Not sure about the liquor. The boat ride itself is very relaxing. I had gone with the expectation of learning something, but instead just heard light music playing. I would say it's romantic but I didn't really think so. Kinda just boating down the river looking at people's houses. Don't think I would recommend it unless you're looking to kill time while doing something unique.

My husband and I were really looking forward to the riverboat cruise. We were expecting some sort of narration regarding the river and about Lewis and Clark expeditions and surrounding area. We are from out-of-state and would have enjoyed the cruise more learning about the river and North Dakota. An explanation of safety rules should have been given to all of the passengers. Finally, our 1 1/2 hour cruise which was paid for was only 1 hour and 13 minutes!

Photo of Kisha J.

Well, I wish I had feedback but do to the fact my husband and I drove all the way up to celebrate our Anniversary weekend only to have the cruise cancelled our feedback is not great. The customer service is severely lacking and downright rude. The woman at the desk tried to somehow make the fact they cancelled the cruise due to lack of people OUR FAULT. We are awaiting our refund, oh yeah, she was rude about that too, the printers were down so she couldn't give us a confirmation of a refund.... We have tried three times in three years to have our anniversary cruise, was even planning our 15th Anniversary on a private Vow Renewal cruise......that ain't happening. Bottom line, poorly managed and poor customer service. Not recommended to plan in advance.

Had my family in from out of state and decided this would be a fun thing to do while they were here. It was okay..Here are some points to take into consideration.. Good Point: You can choose your experience, whether you just want to take a quick cruise, or a long relaxing night with dinner. Bad Point: This obviously runs during the summer where bee activity is high. There were a couple of bee's nests on board and had a tough time figuring where to sit.

June primary ballots give voters a chance to re-think their local government structures

Montana primary ballots up for consideration this year will offer voters a unique opportunity to audit the structures and powers of their city and county governments.

This local government review appears as a “study commission question” toward the end of ballot forms. Most urban voters will see two entries — one for city and one for county governments.

Set forth in the Montana Constitution, this voter-initiated review is offered every 10 years in all 56 counties and 127 incorporated municipalities. Any jurisdiction where voters approve the review in the June 4 primary election will kick off a two-year process examining the ways that cities and counties define their governments.

Reviews focus on legislative powers, which are held by a city council, county board of commissioners or similar elected group. Also up for review are executive branch functions, which includes hiring staff and running daily operations of the city or county. Perhaps most importantly, reviews can shift the balance of power between the two branches.

“This is all an experiment,” said Dan Clark, director of the Local Government Center at Montana State University. “There’s no right or wrong. If this isn’t working as well as they’d like it to, what might work better? And let’s try it.”

A review can lead to small changes, like setting new terms for elected officials or designating ward-by-ward versus at-large representation. It can also restructure the top tier of the government operation, laid out in state statute as “forms.”

Variations of those forms include a commission-executive, in which a city council and mayor serve legislative and executive functions, respectively. An alternative is the commission-manager form, in which the elected legislative body appoints a city manager to handle executive functions. A charter form of government is also an option, giving governments more latitude to define the details and duties of the government and its staff.

There is also a town meeting form, which is only available to towns with less than 2,000 people. The residents of voting age make up the legislative branch, and a quorum is reached if 10 percent of that population attends a meeting. Clark said that Pinesdale, with fewer than 1,000 residents in the Bitterroot Valley, operates this way.

If voters approve a review for a particular government on June 4, a study commission will be elected this November to review potential changes to local governance and suggest solutions. Residents who are eligible to hold elected office in their jurisdiction can file to join the commission. After nearly two years of study, the commission suggests changes, and voters have the chance to accept or reject the commission’s proposals.

The process is funded by a property tax levy, usually collecting an amount in the low six figures. Local governments were required to approve a suggested funding level earlier this year. Any unused funds return to the government’s general fund.

Historically, Montana cities and counties going through change, such as population growth, are more likely to undergo a local government review as their needs evolve.

“Some communities will be content with their form of government. They haven’t experienced a lot of change,” Clark said. “Other communities might feel the need to make that change. There’s growth. They’re getting bigger, more complex, and maybe looking to different structures that might meet the challenges they might make into the future.”

One recent example came out of a review that Bozeman voters approved in 2004. After the two-year study, voters approved a city charter in 2006 that created the city charter, formalized neighborhood councils, and approved the direct election of the mayor. Another proposal that came out of this review, a suggestion to bring the number of City Commission members to seven, failed in a subsequent vote in 2010.

This year, Bozeman is the site of some organizing in support of a city government review. An effort by a group called Represent Bozeman has the support of former Mayor Carson Taylor, as well as current Deputy Mayor Joey Morrison. In a public forum earlier this week, Morrison told an audience that he supports a change in the pathway to the mayor’s office, according to the Bozeman Daily Chronicle . The current city charter has elected mayors to serve two years as deputy before taking over the mayoral position. Morrison is currently in his first year of that process after being elected in 2023.

Represent Bozeman is led by Bozeman Tenants United, which supported Morrison’s mayoral bid.

Organizer Emily LaShelle said the group supports a vote in favor of local government review with a few goals. The first is ward elections and representation for city commission members rather than at-large positions. She said the group hears from renters in northeast Bozeman who don’t feel seen by commissioners who often come from the more affluent neighborhoods.

“In a lot of ways, the reason the tenants union took this on is that so many of the working-class Bozemanites feel deeply unrepresented by the local government,” she said.

Represent Bozeman also supports full-time City Commission positions, which she said would support more working-class representation.

LaShelle said the group also wants to shift the power dynamics between elected officials and appointed city staff. This stems in part from the troubled exit of former City Manager Jeff Mihelich, who accepted severance earlier this year after a leaked video showed him making disparaging comments about commissioners and their work.

“In a lot of ways, the reason the tenants union took this on is that so many of the working-class Bozemanites feel deeply unrepresented by the local government.” Emily LaShelle, organizer for Bozeman Tenants United

Bozeman’s city charter directs city staff to carry out much of the legislation that comes from the City Commission, which LaShelle said leaves too little room for elected officials to carry out their work and creates a barrier against public accountability.

“It makes it harder for regular people to make change,” she said. “There are so many incredible groups in Bozeman to make change. But the current system is outdated and makes it really hard for the people in Bozeman for real democracy to happen.”

A similar effort pushing for local government review is taking place in Billings. David Goodridge is a commercial Realtor and broker who said he learned about the mechanism after years of frustration about the pace of action at the Billings City Council.

Goodridge voted against the measure in 2014. Back then, he said, he looked at the prospect of an additional, yearslong government commission that cost six figures and didn’t like the idea.  He says now that he voted against the very instrument that could bring the change he wanted to see at the council.

“My goal for the last eight months has been to try, from a grassroots position, to educate as many people as I can to not be afraid of this ballot item,” Goodridge said. “It’s a good thing.”

This time around, his effort is called “Get To Yes.” The basic idea is to bring awareness to this down-ballot item and advocate for a vote to get the process started.

Like LaShelle, Goodridge feels that Billings’ City Council has ceded too much power to appointed staff.

“The question I ask a lot of people in presentations is: who do you think is applying vision to the community? Elected leaders or the bureaucracy?” Goodridge said.

He also wants to see the mayor as a full-time position in Montana’s largest city and wants resources for council members to devote more time to their public roles.

“An elected person only has whatever time they have available to them to dive in and understand a complex zone change, a complex staffing issue, an infrastructure problem,” he said. “If all the time they have is just what they have in volunteer time, 10 to 20 hours isn’t going to cut it.”

Goodridge said he has received some monetary support from the Billings Association of Realtors and some in-kind donations for website development and marketing materials, though in total it amounts to less than $2,000. While he has a wish list for his preferred local government structure, his main goal is to secure voter approval for a review process on June 4.

Clark, with MSU’s Local Government Center, said that the intent of the process is not to be a referendum on the actions or policies of elected officials. It’s more about how the government operates regardless of who holds office or staff positions.

In Billings, Goodridge said he has been waiting 10 years to get this chance to rally voters behind a review.

LaShelle hasn’t been waiting for another review since the 2004 study led to a brand new city charter. But she sees different needs for Bozeman 20 years later.

“It’s changed a lot since then,” she said. “And I think maybe the city charter worked for that Bozeman, but it’s certainly not working now. I don’t think we can wait another 10 years.”

WATCH: Dashcam video shows moment where semi-truck nearly drives off Clark Memorial Bridge

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - The 33-year-old man charged for his alleged role in the crash that led to a dramatic rescue of a semi-truck driver dangling from the Clark Memorial Bridge was back in court Wednesday. During the hearing, dashcam video from the semi-truck showed the moments that led up to the crash.

Trevor Branham is the driver accused of causing the crash. The video shows the pickup truck crashing into a stalled vehicle and then swerving into oncoming traffic, leading to the semi hanging over the edge of the bridge.

Witnesses said they saw Branham’s pickup truck speeding on the bridge, weaving through traffic, right before this moment. Branham was charged with four counts of wanton endangerment and operating on a suspended license. Two people in another vehicle were also hurt.

Police said Branham’s license was suspended at the time of the crash and he had a pending driving while suspended charge out of Indiana due to a speeding ticket he didn’t pay from April 2021.

The judge did find probable cause on Wednesday, and the case will now go to a grand jury.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Soccer fans around the world will now have a day to celebrate the world’s most popular sport every year – May 25.

The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution Tuesday proclaiming May 25 as World Football Day. The sport is called football outside of the United States.

The day marks the 100th anniversary of the firs t international soccer tournament in history with the representation of all regions which took place on May 25, 1924 during the summer Olympic games held in Paris, according to the resolution.

The 193-member General Assembly adopted the resolution by consensus with a bang of the gavel by its president, Dennis Francis, to applause from diplomats in the assembly chamber. It was co-sponsored by more than 160 countries.

Libya’s U.N. Ambassador Taher El-Sonni, who introduced the resolution, told the assembly, “Football or soccer as others call it is t he number one game played and followed around the globe.”

But he stressed that soccer is more than just a game played by all ages on streets, in villages, schools and courtyards for fun and in competitions.

Because of its “unparalleled position” in the world of sports, El-Sonni said, “football serves as a universal language spoken across the globe, cutting across national, cultural and socio-economic barriers.”

He said the game has become “a pivotal platform” championing gender equality and social inclusion, “a common ground where individuals from varying backgrounds converge, promoting mutual understanding, tolerance, respect and solidarity.”

The resolution acknowledges “the global reach of football and its impact in various spheres, including commerce, peace and diplomacy, and recognizing that football creates a space for cooperation.”

It also recognizes “the fundamental role” of soccer’s international governing body, FIFA, and the important role of regional and national soccer federations, as well as relevant associations, in p romoting the game.

The resolution encourages all countries to support soccer and other sports as a tool to promote peace, development and the empowerment of women and girls. And it also encourages countries to adopt policies and programs to promote football and other sports and physical activities.

On May 25, the resolution “invites” all nations, U.N. bodies, international organizations, academia, civil society and the private sector to observe World Football Day in line with national priorities “and to disseminate the advantages of football for all, including through educational and public awareness-raising activities.”
