2) Step-by-Step Guide: How to Sail a Hobie 16 Cat Effectively

Title: Mastering the Art of Sailing a Hobie 16 Cat – A Step-by-Step Guide to Unleash Your Full Potential

Introduction: Sailing a Hobie 16 Cat effectively requires a combination of skill, technique, and an innate connection with the elements. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor looking to enhance your performance or a beginner embarking on your first adventure, this step-by-step guide will equip you with the knowledge to confidently navigate your way through the waters. So, buckle up and get ready to unleash the true potential of your Hobie 16 Cat!

1. Preparing for Success: Before setting sail on your Hobie 16 Cat, it’s crucial to ensure that both you and your equipment are fully prepared.

– Start by inspecting your catamaran thoroughly. Check for any visible signs of damage, loose fittings, or worn-out sails. Ensuring everything is in order will minimize potential problems during the journey. – Grasp an understanding of wind conditions by consulting weather forecasts beforehand. This knowledge will help you better plan your route and make necessary adjustments. – Gather all essential safety equipment such as life jackets, flares, navigation lights, and communication devices. Safety should always be prioritized when venturing into open waters.

2. Rigging Like a Pro: Efficient rigging is key to maximizing speed and maneuverability on a Hobie 16 Cat.

– Begin by carefully attaching and tensioning the trampoline netting. A well-tightened trampoline provides stability while allowing crew members to move effortlessly across its surface. – Next, hoist the mainsail using proper techniques. Ensure it is securely fastened at both the tack and clew points while keeping it oriented correctly according to wind direction. – Hoisting jib sails requires precision too; remember that they should complement but not overpower the mainsail’s powers. – Finally, secure all lines neatly on the boat and eliminate any unnecessary clutter. An organized deck allows for quick adjustments and minimizes potential entanglements while sailing.

3. Understanding Sail Trim: Optimal sail trim is vital to harnessing the maximum potential of your Hobie 16 Cat’s speed and handling.

– Adjust the traveler line on your catamaran, which controls side-to-side movement of the main sheeting point, allowing you to balance power with control. – Properly tension the jib sheets to achieve balanced airflow between the jib and mainsail. This balance ensures optimal lift and reduces drag resulting in improved overall performance. – Familiarize yourself with different wind angles and their respective sail settings. Practicing sailing close-hauled, beam reach, broad reach, and running will help you adapt to varying wind conditions efficiently. – Continuously monitor telltales on both sails; they are your guides to achieving optimal aerodynamics. Keep them streaming smoothly by adjusting sail trim accordingly.

4. Navigating through Tacks and Jibes: Perfecting these essential maneuvers is crucial as they allow you to change direction effectively without losing precious momentum or control.

– When tacking (turning your bow through the wind), communicate clearly with your crew members as proper coordination is essential. Steer confidently into the wind while crew members actively cross over in harmony. – Mastering a smooth jibe (turning downwind) involves an orchestrated motion where crew members simultaneously shift weight towards leeward while easing out the mainsheet gradually. – Practice tacking and jibing repeatedly until these maneuvers become second nature; this will improve your overall sailing experience.

5. Enhancing Performance under Challenging Conditions: Sailing isn’t always smooth-sailing! Adapting to adverse weather conditions can make all the difference in maintaining control during challenging moments.

– In high winds, depowering techniques become indispensable – ease off on sails by adjusting halyards, outhauls, and traveler lines. This will reduce the sail area while maintaining stability. – As waves intensify, learn to anticipate and gracefully navigate through them. Raise your weight slightly to allow the bows to cut smoothly through the water rather than crash into waves head-on. – In gusty conditions, maintain an engaged core and balanced posture. Anticipate sudden shifts in wind strength and adjust sail trim accordingly to prevent overpowering or stalling.

Conclusion: Sailing a Hobie 16 Cat effectively is an art that combines technique, skill, and adaptability. By following this comprehensive guide, you’ll be equipped with the tools necessary to conquer the waters confidently. So hop on board your Hobie 16 Cat, embrace the elements around you, and let your sailing prowess shine brightly as you embark on unforgettable seafaring adventures!

Boat Profile

More than fifty years old and as popular as ever

From Issue   February 2023

I was raised in the tropical paradise of Jamaica and was just a child the first time my father took me sailing on a Hobie 16. There was something magical about the way it glided through the water while I relaxed on the trampoline, joyful under the summer sun. My favorite part was being refreshed by the cool ocean spray when my dad steered into the waves.

Rules established by the International Hobie Class Association keep all Hobie 16s equal, so sailing skills alone determine which crews are the fastest.

In the 1950s, Hobie Alter, designer of the Hobie 16, made a name for himself in surfboards and was the first to make them with fiberglass over foam cores. When he turned his attention to sailing, the results were no less revolutionary. He introduced his 14′ sailing catamaran, the Hobie 14, in 1967. Created as a fun, affordable, and lightweight boat, it was dubbed “the people’s boat.” Within a few short years of development, the Hobie 14 was quickly adopted into the racing scene around the world and became the largest class of catamaran. The Hobie 16 was introduced in 1971, and now, over a half-century later, it is the most popular of all the Hobies. More than 135,000 Hobie 16s have been sold, the design was enshrined in the now defunct American Sailboat Hall of Fame, and it thrives as a world-renowned racing class.

Almost identical to the original 14, the Hobie 16 is built for two people and is equipped with a second sail and dual trapezes so both crew members can hang their weight well outboard. It is easy to rig, launch, and sail. With its 148.2-sq-ft main and 55.1-sq-ft jib (both fully battened), and its lightweight construction coming in at 320 lbs, the Hobie 16 can reach speeds approaching 24 knots in ideal conditions. Cutting neatly through waves upwind and surfing them downwind, it thrives in breezy and wavy conditions.

The asymmetrical hulls—straight and vertical on the outboard side and curved inboard—create lift, and as the windward hull rises, the lift generated by the leeward hull diminishes the leeway made by the catamaran.

The Hobie 16 has asymmetrical hulls that are nearly straight on the outside and curved on the inside so that the downwind hull, the one most deeply immersed, provides lift to windward. The shape of the hulls eliminates the need for daggerboards and meets one of the designer’s primary requirements: the ability to sail directly off and onto the beach. It’s one of the many reasons the boat is loved by so many.

The anodized aluminum mast rotates and has a teardrop cross section, features that improve the airflow across the mainsail.

W hen setting up the Hobie 16, the most difficult task is raising the mast. While this can be done singlehandedly, I have never been successful. A crewmate, and even a third pair of hands, makes it easy. Once the mast is up, it is stabilized laterally by the shrouds while the forestay is connected to the bow bridle. Fortunately, after doing this process once, it is easy to master.

When rigging the sails, I usually start with the jib, attaching the tack to the chainplate connected to the bridle between the bows of the boat. I then attach the jibhead to the halyard with a bowline, clip the five hanks to the forestay, and thread the jibsheets through the travelers and cam cleats. After attaching the halyard shackle to the mainsail, hoisting the main is fairly straightforward but does benefit from a second set of hands to feed the luff into the mast track. Each rudder connects to the stern with a pin and a split ring.

rainbow 16 catamaran

The Hobie 16’s ability to be sailed off the beach was a major factor in its rise of popularity.

The light weight of the Hobie 16 means that I can singlehandedly push and pull it across a beach. I will typically hoist the sails on land, push the boat into the water, jump on, and as soon as I’m aboard, I’m sailing. Returning, I drop the sails while in the surf and then pull the boat onto the beach. Hobie hulls can handle rough landings, and many people sail their boats directly onto the beach—even while sheeted in and driving hard. The 16 can also easily be launched from a trailer at a ramp.

U nderway, the Hobie 16 is very sensitive to tiller movement, and oversteering may often lead to an accidental tack or jibe, or send you straight into irons. However, it’s easy to get out of irons, even when singlehanded, by backing the sail and directing the tiller to the same side as the sail until the bow turns away. The boat is then quick to pick up speed again.

For recreational sailors, the trampoline provides comfort and relaxation, and for advanced sailors it prevents bruises during high-speed tacks and jibes. While spray rarely comes over the bows because of the way they cut through the water, do not expect to stay dry because the trampoline does not offer protection from spray coming directly from underneath.

rainbow 16 catamaran

The Hobie 16 is designed for a crew of two. Even with both crew members on the trapezes, it’s possible to fly a hull. Sailing with one hull out of the water eliminates the drag created by the wetted surface and increases the potential for speed.

Going fast and flying a hull, as you might expect, can lead to a capsize. I’ve never capsized a Hobie without getting dropped into the water, so be prepared to go for a swim. But righting a Hobie 16 is easier than it might seem, indeed, the boat will frequently right itself because the trampoline acts like a sail when the wind blows under it, allowing a crew and skipper to just climb back aboard. On the rare occasion a Hobie 16 does not right itself, I first loop the righting line (which is attached to the base of the mast) around the windward hull. Then my crew and I stand on the leeward hull, lean back, and pull the boat upright. Because the Hobie 16 is designed to be crewed by two people, when sailed solo on breezy days it is quick to capsize and difficult to right alone. Regardless of the occasional dip in the ocean, every Hobie 16 sailor, from beginner to racer, exhilarates in the rush of excitement that comes from sailing this fun-packed multihull.

Because the Hobie 16 can reach very high speeds, especially on windy days, the boat can be overpowered and reefing the sail is important. Reefing the mainsail is easiest when done on the beach. Five reefing lines are required: a tack downhaul leads from the lowest eye on the luff to the eye at the base of the mast, a clew outhaul leads from an eye on the leech down to the boom, and three reefpoints secure the excess sail around the boom.

rainbow 16 catamaran

When the wind speed reaches about 12 knots, both crew members often take to the trapezes.

W hile the Hobie 16 is popular with thrill-seekers, it is mainly used as a summer recreational boat. Even on quiet days, the Hobie sails smoothly, especially when using light-wind techniques such as shifting crew weight forward to reduce drag or to leeward to heel the boat and angle the mast so gravity can give the sails their airfoil shapes.

Ultimately the Hobie 16 is a versatile boat that can be easily rigged for brief outings, day trips, or multiday adventures loaded up with camping gear and food. Despite being only 16′ 7″ in length, it is surprisingly spacious and, although designed for a crew of two, can comfortably accommodate three adults or a family of four. It is a great boat for family outings with kids; on glassy days the trampoline is a very comfortable place to take a nap or gaze into the water at the marine life. Indeed, if you’re not into racing, bring plenty of sunscreen, water, and snacks and just enjoy cruising under the summer sun.

Spent many a summer on a Hobie 16. My buddy and I would go sailing when there were wind warnings in effect and no one else was out on the lake. We’d both get out on the traps with the upwind hull barely out of the water and got going so fast the rudders literally would sing. But bury that leeward hull in a wave and before you know it you were in the drink. Fast fun boat. The sailing equivalent of a sports car. These days I’ll occasionally rent one of the plastic Hobie’s while on vacation and they are still a hoot.

Nice one, Zoe!!

Some of the best sleep I’ve ever had is beach camping and sleeping on a Hobie’s trampoline.

Small Boat Spotlight - Hobie 16

Small Boat Spotlight : The Everlasting Hobie 16

By: Pat Reynolds Learn To Sail , Sailboats , Sailing Fun

When you stop and think about what types of boats are most responsible for luring people into the wonderful world of sailing the Hobie 16 has got to be in the top three on the list. For children of the 1970s and 80s this sexy little catamaran seemed to be sitting on a trailer in every other backyard.

What most simply call the Hobie 16 is an iconic sailboat that is considered by many to be the most popular catamaran in the world. In the beginning, the H16 was marketed as more than some ordinary sailboat that could be easily trailered, rigged and beached. Instead Hobie Alter put forth the idea that to sail this boat was to be part of a lifestyle – the “ Hobie way of life .” Instead of making the pitch that it was a fast fun little boat that could make your summer a little brighter, Alter suggested that sailing a Hobiecat was a reflection of an energized youth with a dash of good-natured rebellion.

There have been over 135,000 of these boats produced since 1969 and they are the second largest boat fleet in existence. The H16 is simple to rig (especially on a beach) and pretty easy to sail, although capsizing is par for the course and regarded by some as fun. Once launched, the full batten main and relatively lightweight construction (320 pounds) makes the boat quite fast and responsive. The Hobie folks state the max speed is nearly 24-knots and there are plenty of Hobie sailors who will agree and verify. At speeds like that you can bet whoever is sailing the boat will be utilizing another element Hobie sailors love – the dual trapeze setup they are equipped with. In 10-15 knots of breeze, skipper and crew can hike their entire bodies out on the wires simultaneously, suspended above the water and as the hull begins to rise, life becomes very sweet. Any beach cat sailor will tell you that sailing along at 15-knots, hiked out and flying a hull is one of the most blissful feelings known to man.

The other very positive aspect of the Hobie 16 is the cost of entry. It remains one of the more inexpensive roads into the world of sailing. A 2017 Hobie 16 is just over $11,000 and that’s ready to sail. Lots of sailboats have a base price and then silly little extras like… sails!! And if the used market is explored, a ready to sail H16 can be picked up for under $1,000, which is pretty incredible.

And lastly, Hobie 16s are also versatile. They’re small enough to throw in the backyard next to the garage without causing marital dismay but once rigged and ready, they’re hearty enough to do some serious coastal sailing. While many Hobie sailors head out for a few hours for some low-key albeit amped up daysailing, others like to actually get in the surf, hit the adrenaline button and use the boat as a surfboard.

It’s a design that has definitely stood the test of time (for good reason) and one that is positive for the sport. The cost to fun ratio is right where we like to see it, so if you don’t have a boat and don’t want to spend a fortune – grab a Hobie 16 and getcha sail on!

RS CAT16 – MORE FUN THROUGH BETTER DESIGN

RS CAT16

Sparkling performance gives this modern beach and training catamaran the feel of a higher performance boat, yet it could hardly be easier to handle. Start with the main and jib – use the gennaker and trapeze to turbo charge the performance when you’re ready. The RS CAT16 has stability and space so you can enjoy the excitement alone or with family and friends. A new design protected system for joining the beams to the hulls gives increased stiffness compared to other rotomoulded polyethylene catamarans, with the added bonus of allowing the boat to be disassembled quickly for storage or transport. WHAT THE SAILORS ARE SAYING…

The RS CAT16, a triumph of rotomolding technology, is not just another plastic beach cat. It’s plenty high-performance. This is one for adults and kids alike to get hooked on the stoke that comes with two hulls.

The RS Cats were a huge success and the kids loved the thrill of catamaran sailing.

Roadshows , Land Rover BAR

Even under main and jib alone, the RS Cat 16 sizzled along, its wave-piercing bows doing their thing while a pair of laser-beam-straight wakes stretched out astern. A few minutes later, we hoisted the A-sail, and life became very satisfying indeed.

Sail Magazine, USA

With more breeze you’d be laughing, but what’s really amazing is the build and how well it’s all put together – amazing.

Both my sister and I ordered from Ruth's roses. They were beautiful and delivered on time. The flowers were for our sister-in-law who took her life. She loved flowers, so we were happy the bouquets were so pretty and fresh.

Giving 1 star so it can be captured but really my rating is Zero stars. Horrible experience. Would NOT recommend. Go elsewhere. Do not give them your money. They are not who, what, or where they present themselves to be. They are not the local florist they say they are. Ordered roses well in advance of delivery date for a 75th birthday. Not delivered on scheduled date. Called to inquire and was told by "customer service" that it's not in their protocol to alert a customer of delays or non delivery. Call the next morning. Speak with different customer service person who promises to look into and call me back. Fast forward 8 hours later and the intended recipient says she still no flowers. So I call back and speak to another agent. Guess what. My order was canceled. They cancelled my order because at 8:30 am they (allegedly) called the delivering florist and could not get in touch. So they cancelled without touching base with me. No call back, no email, nothing. According to the latest agent that's their policy to do so. I've already contacted my cc company to hold their payment. Again 0/0. Support a true local florist, not this fraud company. Wish I would have looked at other reviews before attempting to use this fraud company.

decided to purchase flowers from a local flower shop instead of those big companies for once, because let's help small businesses!! well, my aunt's son died and her husband just died all in less than a years time & now she's widowed and living alone. i decided to purchase her some flowers to be delivered as a nice surprise. i dropped $100 on this bouquet. the pictures were beautiful. all white, a nice assortment. she's a lovely little old lady who would be so touched by receiving flowers at her door. anyways, it was promised next day delivery (a saturday), cool. sunday rolls around and i never received a thank you phone call from my aunt. thought maybe she's just busy grieving and forgot, but i call to see if she received them. she didn't and now the surprise is ruined. i call first thing monday morning to see where tf are the flowers. they said nobody was home (she was. she's an old lady with nowhere to go? no job or anything), and that i "wrote in the comments that if nobody answers the door, to NOT leave them outside" (i literally never said this? i would've been fine with it left outside) anyways, they promised to deliver them that day by 5pm. cool. i tell my aunt to pls not leave the house and they're coming today. again, NOT DELIVERED. it's literally crazy to me that had i never called to ask where tf the flowers were, they would've just pocketed my money. why didn't they call ME, THE PURCHASER, to tell me they weren't delivered & give me a new delivery date. i definitely feel scammed. now they weren't delivered a SECOND TIME and my aunt told me thank you for the sentiment but just cancel the flowers ): she appreciated the thought. i'm so pissed off that i couldn't make my aunts day with some surprise flowers at her door after losing her husband and child. i didn't think to check yelp for reviews because it's a local flower shop? i didn't know people wrote reviews for flowers lol. coming here and seeing ONE STAR from every single review is not surprising. i'm surprised some people actually ended up getting the flowers they ordered. do yourself a favor and don't purchase from here. it literally was a scam.

Not a brick and mortar store...it's a lame excuse for a "family owned full service florist". It is neither. Do your homework!

One star because zero isn't an option. Placed order for a funeral on Saturday, August 3rd ON TUES, JULY 30TH, four days prior notice at 4:44 pm. Immediately received an order confirmation email. Their website clearly advertises free delivery yet they add an $18.99 fee for "delivery"....THE MORNING OF THE FUNERAL at 10:13am, AFTER IT HAD ALREADY BEGAN, I received a phone call stating my order would NOT be fulfilled. I immediately called back and was proceeded to be "informed" by (Jello??) that they did not have the supplies. I very firmly reminded her THEY'VE HAD 4 DAYS to gather said "supplies" only to be told my order would NOT be delivered. Wow, thanks for the notice! Grrrrrr. I was also BOLD FACE LIED TO when she said my order had already been refunded. NOPE! my bank account has NOT been refunded..... I would NEVER refer anyone to this dishonest, absolutely zero customer service oriented company.

rainbow 16 catamaran

I ordered and paid for an arrangement with Lillys, and I paid extra for more Lillys. There were no Lillys in what was received. Only 1 ugly spider mum! Refused to fix or refund. After lengthy discussion, the are giving me a $25 refund on a $129. Order. Had to place order with another florist.

This appears to be a local company online but when you call their phone number you get someone from a large call center in a different country. It also says they're closed permanently but their website is still up and running and accepting orders. Their website also claims same day delivery if you order before 2pm but it won't allow you to select same day when you checkout. That is why I called them and they told me they have no control over the delivery dates the website provides and they wouldn't honor the same day delivery even though I ordered before 2pm. They also listed on their website that they were running a sale but it appears those are just the normal prices being displayed as a sale which is a deceptive way to increase sale. I can't believe after all this I was still charged a $18.99 service fee when I can't get my flowers delivered until 48 hours from now. I really regret ordering from this company because I feel like they're a scam and will steal my cc information.

Photo of Stacie R.

Will never order from this business again. Flower arrangement was left on porch in extreme heat. When requested for refund or new arrangement, business only will refund partial payment. Use another flower shop!

rainbow 16 catamaran

Wow - I should have read the Yelp reviews first. Flowers ordered - around $100 worth. Flowers never delivered. I called several times. I was told that the driver reported that the flowers *were* delivered (they were not) - and that Ruth's would need to do an investigation. I paid for flowers to be delivered yesterday. I paid. No flowers. And now I'm waiting for some investigation to be completed. Meanwhile - no flowers delivered. And how do I prove that no flowers were delivered?

Photo of Velma W.

Yesterday I ordered my niece a bouquet of flowers to be delivered to her home. What she received was not at all what I ordered. It cost $75 (and that was with free delivery) and this is what she received. It looked like they bought a bouquet at Safeway and stuck it in a vase, without even arranging it. I was extremely unsatisfied and emailed them to tell them so. I received back their substitution policy.

Gunboat 57 charter catamaran will spoil you with speed.

Gunboat 57 Vai Vai is not your average charter cat.

One of the many perks of my job as a yachting writer is that I get to sail aboard a wide variety of boats. I especially love ripping off speed runs aboard some the world’s largest (and fastest) offshore race boats . Now, the truth is, the only reason I’m allowed aboard is because I’m just a humble journalist. But the blistering speeds those boats are capable of is addictive.

And as someone who’s been lucky enough to sail more than my fair share of charter catamarans in the Caribbean, Mediterranean, French Polynesia and other bucket list destinations, I can say every charter cat I’ve ever been on has been a fantastic platform for living large in the tropics. They’re not particularly exciting to sail.

Gunboat 57 Vai Vai speeds in front of Newport's The Claiborne Pell Bridge

I’m also grateful to say that I’ve sailed on a few high-performance sailing catamarans like the Gunboat 57 Vai Vai . One of the many cool things about Vai Vai is that she’s capable of blow-your-hair-back speeds AND providing just the right amount living space and cruising comforts. But I never knew it was possible to charter something as fast and fun-to-sail as a Gunboat 57—in Newport, Rhode Island in the summer and Caribbean in the winter—until now.

Jeff Hager's Gunboat 57 will appeal to sailors who appreciate high performance sailing and stylishly ... [+] comfortable accommodations on a charter boat.

Harris will propose $25,000 in down payment aid for first-time homebuyers as part of economic agenda, fc barcelona first team star misses training and is ‘close to exit’.

After spending a little time with the VaiVai’s owner Jeff Hager earlier this summer, all I can say is Vai Vai ’s speed potential makes it possible to cover way, way more ground than a more conventional charter boat. And since everyone (even the helmsman and sail trimmer can hang out in main bridgedeck area, and the catamaran never heels more than a few degrees) more speed doesn’t mean less comfort.

The Gunboat 57 is a powerful sailing catamaran with stylishly comfortable accommodations and an ... [+] indoor helm station

In fact, the indoor/outdoor living aboard Vai Vai is next level. The wrap-around windows provide protection from the high winds and spray such a fast boat produces. The 360-degree view is amazing while the massive roof provides essential sun protection. And the sheer size of the bridgedeck is soooo much bigger than what you’d find on a 57-foot monohull. And the nice thing about having the galley and living cabins in the hulls is that each cabin is particularly private.

But, let’s fact it. This boat will not appeal to anyone who rates a charter boat based on how over-the-top-“luxurious” the accommodations are. This is a high-performance sailor’s catamaran for people who don’t want to give up the sheer thrill of sailing on a charter.

The boat that will bring oysters and other raw bar staples out to your boat at anchor is one of the ... [+] many reasons to stop in Cuttyhunk on a charter aboard Vai Vai.

And if you’re lucky enough to book a week aboard VaiVai before she heads south in the fall, be sure to stop for oysters on the tiny island of Cuttyhunk. I guarantee you’ll beat every other sailing charter boat in Newport’s fleet.
