An excellent experience that exceeded all expectations! The staff on board were all so kind and could not have done more for us. They even produced a birthday cake with 24hrs notice from my husband! Communication was not the easiest but we got by! The food was excellent and there was plenty of it.

We had an amazing wale watching boat trip. The journey started with an early morning cruise out to the deep sea. A very solid and spacious vessel. Breakfast on board was delicious. All the crew were friendly and helpful.

We came to Mirissa for whale watching. We realized that the most popular kind of shared boat here is a large double decker with 40-150 people on board (depending on the company). We were recommended sail lanka as they have these catamarans which carry <=20 people.

We went on the yacht cruise in Trincomalee to see whales and dolphins, but we also went snorkeling too. Furthermore, this was by far the most ethical way you could see the whales a dolphins compared to the smaller speed boats, which I genuinely struggled with. However, Sail Lanka did not chase the animals or 'hunt them' down.

We spent a wonderful week sailing through the South Coast of Sri Lanka, visiting the old town of Galle, and other interesting places such as fishermen's towns and Buddhist temples. Wales watching was part of our holiday but we weren’t lucky enough to see them.

Great crew, delicious and unpretentious snacks, and super fun all round. We went through sun and storms, and although the water was a little murky the snorkelling was ace.

They were always there to help and make sure we were ok. Life vests were provided for the dinghy trip to the catamaran and for all water activities. Food was delicious and they were prepared for the rain and it meant our experience was not affected. We had fun on the net and in all the activities.

A 3 hoors during boattrip was top, a beautiful catamaran, very nice people We saw nice corals and beautiful fishes. With a snack, plenty of cold water, ... done SUPping the first time.

We went out on the morning 3 hour sailing trip and absolutely loved it. There were 2 other families with us on the trip, 6 adults and 6 kids in total. The staff were fantastic and always there to help the younger children (my son is 2 and there was also a 3 year old on board) navigate their way around the catamaran.

Superb, extraordinary, great service from a professional well trained crew and chef. We have chartered in Greece, Croatia, Tahiti and now Sri Lanka bad rage experience with Sail Lanka is equal to or better than all the other charters.

We went on the morning cruise from 9 to 12. They picked us up from the beach in front of the hotel with a small boat. There were 20 people on the ship at the same time and it didn't feel crowded at all. Drinks and a small snack are included in the price.

A heritage trail is an ideal way to get to grips with the unique life and history of Sri Lanka, starting off with the ancient cities. The most famed city of Sri Lanka is Anuradhapura. Acting as the longest serving capital of the country, this city offers a high level of visitor amenities without losing any of the historic charm of the old city. With the earliest dates of capital city status being in the 4th century there is plenty to see here and it's easy to see why it was such a stable and sound development back in the height of its power. The 5th century fortress of Sigiriya is the perfect follow up to the wonders of Anuradhapura. Featuring some of the oldest murals in the country, the history can almost be felt at this enchanting location. Strolling around the beautiful water gardens adds another element of beauty to the stone architecture, while adding a hint of modern influence to the ancient landscape. To complete the heritage tour of Sri Lanka you can also visit the two other kingdoms of Polonnaruwa and Digamadulla, which are still featured in everyday life today.   Taking a break from learning about Sri Lankan culture could not be easier with the sublime selection of sandy beaches around the coast. Some of the best beaches on offer are found along the southern coast and play host to many luxurious hotels, sports facilities and incredible diving opportunities. There are plenty of areas of sandy solitude along the coast, allowing you some privacy and peace, as well as some picturesque sandbars.   For beaches which offer something a little bit different to the norm, your first choice is the Negambo Lagoon. Located close by to Colombo, this bay is ideal for lobstering. Catching a fresh supper could not be more relaxing as you watch paradise in motion while waiting for a perfectly fresh meal. Moving north to Alankuda Beach you are in for a real treat as you enjoy the delightful Indian heat. This particular stretch of beach is ideal for whale and dolphin watching. Gaze out from the soft sand or take a dive to see if any dolphins come to play. If you're very lucky you may spot the largest mammal on the planet, the blue whale.   Aside from the spectacular ancient cities and luxurious beaches, Sri Lanka also provides staggering scenes of natural beauty. Exploring further inland, the lush green rainforests surround you with tropical flora and fauna which hide many treasures. Some are more obvious, such as the towering mountains that rise up into the mist above, and others are more hidden, including some magnanimous ancient palaces which stand neglected among the foliage. The most refreshing discovery to be found in the rainforests are the outstanding waterfalls. Stunning to watch and even more impressive to stand beside, these natural beauties will keep you cool and refreshed in the rainforest humidity.   Wildlife is a huge part of Sri Lanka, with a huge amount of both onland and underwater species residing on the small island. While exploring the island, a trip to Wilpattu National Park is a must if you want to see some of the spectacular wildlife Sri Lanka has to offer. With ample opportunities to see Asian elephants, deer, buffalo, langur and sloth bears there is plenty to see and keep your eyes peeled for. Another mammal worth looking for is the leopard. Sri Lanka holds one of the densest collections of the feline mammal in the world but it doesn't always mean they'll be easy to spot. Keeping to the animal theme, there are many varieties of amphibians and birds also to see, so mind your step as you explore the nature trails- just don't forget to look up!   Back in the ocean and on route back to your luxury charter yacht, make another attempt to spot some of the fantastic underwater life by taking a dive in the cool waters. Move among thousands of brightly coloured fish, while looking further ahead for any dark shadows of sperm or blue whales. Did You Know Marine Biologists Made A Discovery Off The Coast of Sri Lanka

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) claims that under 10 percent of the world's oceans have been mapped using modern sonar technology. This means there's a lot we don't know about the species and ecosystems that thrive beneath the water's surface.

While conducting work off the coast of Sri Lanka, marine biologist Asha de Vos came across a creature she never thought she'd ever see with her own eyes. The reason? Its existence was only confirmed in 2003, and very little is known about the species. Keep reading to learn more!

Sri Lankan Civil War

The Sri Lankan Civil War occurred between the government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam, who wanted to create an independent state in the northeastern portion of the country. Fighting took place between 1983 and 2009, and for nearly 30 years it was too dangerous for scientists and marine biologists to adequately study the waters surrounding the island.

Following the conflict, the Sri Lankan government came under fire for violating human rights and committing a number of war crimes, including the bombing of civilian targets and the massacre of Tamil guerrillas.

Who is Asha de Vos?

Asha de Vos is a marine biologist from Sri Lanka who's best known for leading the Blue Whale Project, which aims to research the species' population in and around the Indian Ocean .

Among de Vos' most notable achievements was the declaration of the blue whale as a threatened species around Sri Lanka. She's also the founder and director of Oceanswell , a non-profit marine conservation research and education organization that focuses on public outreach and the disproving of " parachute science ."

The waters around Sri Lanka were particularly dangerous

On top of the dangers that come with war, marine biologists and researchers also had to contend with sea mines that had been placed along the coast by the Sri Lankan government to prevent terrorist attacks. This was on top of the land mines laid by both sides during the decades the civil war was ongoing.

The dangers associated with accidentally setting one off didn't scare Asha de Vos.

Shipping lanes and their impact on marine life

The shipping lanes off the coast of Sri Lanka are among the busiest in the world. The amount of container ships and other vessels that pass through each day negatively impact the local marine ecosystem in numerous ways .

Along with disturbing sediment and creating noise pollution, these lanes also result in the spread of hazardous materials (think oil spills) and the spread of invasive species, therefore threatening the biodiversity of integral marine environments.

On top of this, the vessels can also collide with larger sea life, such as whales and dolphins, resulting in increased deaths within already vulnerable species.

A bus-sized creature began circling the boat

While a few miles off shore, Asha de Vos and her team began to notice a creature circling them in the water - and a rather sizeable one, at that. According to reports, it was as large as a bus. This led everyone on board the ship to assume they'd come across a blue whale, the very creature they'd set out to study.

However, what they'd come across was a much rarer species.

Identifying the type of whale

While the team was aware the creature swimming beneath them was a whale, they weren't sure of the exact species.

To identify the type, Asha de Vos and her team looked at the creature's unique physical features. However, they couldn't find any similarities to the information they already had on file and had to enlist the help of two experts, Robert Brownell and Salvatore Cerchio.

Cerchio and Bronwell looked at the photos the team had taken and determined the creature was among the rarest whales in the world: Omura's whale.

The species wasn't discovered until 2003

While the evolutionary lineage of Omura's whales dates back between 10 and 17 million years , the species' existence wasn't confirmed until 2003. Three Japanese scientists analyzed the mDNA of nine individual whales - eight had been caught by research vessels in the late 1970s, while the other had been collected in 1998.

According to the trio, the closest relative of this previously-unknown species is the blue whale. However, it more closely resembles the fin whale. It's also rather small, at just 30 feet long.

Omura's whales are incredibly rare

Despite being found in the Indo-Pacific and Atlantic , it's incredibly rare to spot an Omura's whale in the wild. In fact, so few have been encountered on the high seas that scientists haven't been able to determine any sort of population size.

The first confirmed live sightings occurred in 2017, off the coasts of Sri Lanka and Taiwan. While other sightings had previously been reported, there was never enough evidence to confirm that the whales spotted were of this elusive species.

What does Asha de Vos' discovery mean?

• Vietnamese Party chief an inspirational revolutionary leader: Sri Lankan leader

HÀ NỘI – Party General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng is an inspirational revolutionary leader who has upheld the spirit of the Vietnamese revolution and contributed to shaping the development of socialism in the country in modern times.

The remark was made by General Secretary of the Communist Party of Sri Lanka Dr. G. Weerasinghe in his interview granted to Vietnam News Agency reporters in South Asia on July 20.

Expressing his profound condolences to the Communist Party of Việt Nam (CPV) Central Committee, Party members and people of Việt Nam over the passing of the Party leader, Weerasinghe said that the Communist Party of Sri Lanka hoisted the flag at half-mast at its headquarters to say goodbye to the leader of Vietnam and of the international communist movement, and a close friend of the Communist Party of Sri Lanka.

According to him, the international communist movement recognises Trọng as a steadfast communist who follows Marxism-Leninism and President Hồ Chí Minh's ideology. He is truly a patriot and always dedicated to building socialism in Vietnam.

Weerasinghe emphasised that under the leadership of the CPV, headed by General Secretary Trọng, Việt Nam has become one of the fastest-developing countries in Asia, with its people’s living standards improving continuously, and the successful socialist-oriented development programme with clear centralised planning. Under Trọng's leadership, Việt Nam has ensured political stability, social order, and continuous socio-economic development, while enhancing its role regionally and internationally.

His significant contributions to and role in these successes are immense, the leader of the Communist Party of Sri Lanka affirmed.

Evaluating Trọng’s contributions in terms of theory to issues of socialism and socialist-oriented market economy to serve as a basis for other countries to learn from, Weerasinghe said that the CPV leader is an outstanding theorist in the international communist movement, who applied Marxism-Leninism to Việt Nam's conditions and thereby contributed to the development of Marxism-Leninism in the present era. In his article titled “Some theoretical and practical issues on socialism and the path towards socialism in Việt Nam”, Trọng scientifically proved that the only correct path to develop Việt Nam is socialism.

Also according to Weerasinghe, in his book on the building and development of Việt Nam’s diplomacy deeply imbued with the characteristics of “Vietnamese bamboo”, General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng correctly identified the importance of foreign affairs as the driving force for the development of the country.

Trọng helped Việt Nam develop a unique approach to foreign affairs, which emphasises preserving national identity, while harmonising foreign relations to promote the construction and safeguarding of the Fatherland, he said, adding that the concept of "Bamboo Diplomacy" has great significance for small developing countries like Sri Lanka, which are currently trying to build a path for developing a sovereign state.
