Tour The Black Swan , the World’s Most Elegant Superyacht

As the name suggests, superyachts are meant to garner attention . From Zaha Hadid’s stunningly crafted ships to vessels featuring waterfalls , these massive floating crafts are becoming ever more exquisite in design. And the latest concept superyacht, by designer Timur Bozca, is no exception. Dubbed The Black Swan for its black exterior and graceful aesthetic, the striking structure is proof of the power of simplicity. According to Bozca, who splits time between offices in Istanbul, Milan, and London, the superyacht was crafted by connecting “simple lines together with dramatic angles and curves.”

“Using the powerful image of an arrow as my inspiration, I tried to create an aerodynamic exterior that would give the yacht a distinctive look, while also improving the efficiency of the craft in the water,” said Bozca in a statement. The yacht will include four engines that can generate 23,172 horsepower, hitting a top speed of 32 m.p.h. Made from aluminium and steel, the yacht features a stunning pool that funnels toward the stern and seems to disappear into the ocean. The Black Swan also includes a sundeck, balconies that are hidden from view, and a rooftop helipad.

The superyacht will be able to accommodate up to 12 guests across a master suite and six guest suites. The yacht is still in its initial design stage, but if built as shown, it would cost upwards of ten million dollars.

Black Swan Superyacht is a luxurious 70-meter floating getaway has been designed to be as technically-advanced “under the hood” as she is mesmerizing to look at. The yacht’s arrow-shaped aerodynamic design not only ramps up her “cool quotient” – she ensures her high efficiency.  The Black Swan is here to captivate those, who have the eye for style, luxury, technology and most importantly travelling by sea.

Black Swan’s four engines, capable of revving up to an impressive 23,172 in horsepower, are fueled by a staggering 183,000 liter fuel capacity. Cruising speed is around 20 knots, with a top speed of 28.

This ‘concept’ yacht has been designed with state-of-the-art technology to redefine the term experience, style and luxury, and to give her owner a supreme experience in travelling.. The hull is made of reinforced steel and the superstructure is constructed of sleek black aluminum. An on-board water tank ensures that the yacht leaves port with a supply of 38,600 liters of fresh water.

The Black Swan Superyacht can accommodate up to 12 guests and a staff of 18. The master cabin and six guest cabins are decorated in earth tones with black walls and glass accents that give the décor a futuristic look, included a helipad, pool and multiple sunning decks.

Advertised by DMA Yachting, the breathtaking charter yacht M/V BLACK SWAN is a 161 ft motor yacht featuring a jetski and a hot tub. The most valuable elements of M/V BLACK SWAN are her generous space and interconnection with the sea. M/V BLACK SWAN spends the summer and winter season in Croatia. She was constructed by a custom yachtbuilder in 2018. A succesful refit was fulfilled in 2024. The spacious yacht layout features 10 generous cabins and easily accommodates a maximum of 20 guests.

If you are obtaining a quote, information, booking travel for and/or securing or procuring a Charter (as that term is defined in Section 1 below) for more than just yourself, all references below to “Charterer” or “you” (and derivations thereof) shall be read to mean you on behalf of yourself and each individual within your group for whom you are obtaining a quote, information, booking travel for and/or securing or procuring Charter.

These Terms shall be read together and construed, to the fullest extent possible, to be in concert with any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer. To the extent they cannot be so construed, then in the event of any direct conflict between these Terms and any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer (including but not limited to the agreement executed by Charterer for a Charter Reservation (as that term is defined in Section 1 below), these Terms shall prevail.

• Prepaid Charter Reservations . Typically, Broker negotiates charter rates in advance with the yacht owner or charter company (“ Charter Provider ”) to obtain cost-effective rates, and facilitate reservations and availability for yacht charters, excursions and travel (the “ Charter ”). Broker also provides services to you by facilitating the booking of reservations for consideration and receives a commission from the Charter Provider (the “ Broker Fee ”). The Broker Fee is included in the pre-negotiated Charter rate provided to you, plus taxes and other fees where applicable. You agree that your payment is for the total amount set forth in the applicable Charter agreement (which Charter Provider may refer to as a Charter Contract, Charter Agreement, Booking Terms & Conditions, Instructions and Terms for Accommodations, as well as other derivations) provided to you by Broker (“ Charter Agreement ”). Upon execution of the Charter Agreement and receipt of the applicable deposit, you will have made a reservation for the Charter that authorizes Broker to facilitate the Charter on your behalf (“Charter Reservation”), including making payment arrangements with the Charter Provider. You further agree that Broker is a third-party beneficiary to the Charter Agreement and shall have the right to enforce such agreement to the extent it deems such enforcement necessary or advisable to protect its rights hereunder or under the Charter Agreement.

  Broker retains the Broker Fee as compensation in arranging your Charter Reservation. The Broker Fee varies based on the amount and type of Charter and/or services provided by Broker.  By making a Charter Reservation, you accept and agree to the relevant cancellation and no-show policy of the Charter Provider set forth in the Charter Agreement. Cancellation and no-show policies vary for each Charter. Carefully read the Charter Agreement and additional information provided to you by Broker. It is expressly agreed by Charterer that the Broker Fee is earned at the time the Charter Reservation is made. Late payment, wrong credit card or debit card details, invalid credit or debit cards, or insufficient funds are for your own risk and account, and you will not be entitled to any refund of any prepaid amount unless the Charter Provider expressly agrees otherwise under the Charter Agreement or in some other signed writing.

• Charter Rules and Restrictions . Additional terms and agreements will apply to your Charter Reservation and any purchase or rental of equipment or other items, supplies, provisions and travel you may select. Please read those additional terms carefully. In particular, if you have purchased airfare, please ensure that you read the full terms and conditions of carriage issued by the supplier. You agree to abide by the terms of purchase imposed by any supplier with whom you elect to deal, including but not limited to payment of all amounts when due and compliance with the supplier’s rules and restrictions regarding availability, charges, fares, and use of products and services.
• Payment . All payments must be made by personal check, bank/wire transfer, ACH payment and/or with a major credit card unless otherwise expressly stated. The total price for the Charter Reservation will be billed in U.S. Dollars unless otherwise stated. Some banks and credit card companies impose fees for international transactions. If you are making a reservation from outside of the United States on a US credit card, your bank may convert the payment amount to your local currency and charge you a conversion fee. This means the amount listed on your credit or bank card statement may be in your local currency and therefore a different figure than the amount provided by Broker for the Charter Reservation. In addition, a foreign transaction fee may be assessed if the financial institution that issued your credit card is located outside of the United States. Booking international travel may be considered to be an international transaction by the financial institution or card company. The currency exchange rate and foreign transaction fee is determined solely by your financial institution on the day that it processes the transaction. If you have any questions about these fees or the exchange rate applied to your booking, please contact your financial institution. Broker shall not be liable to you for any such service, conversion, or exchange fee.

  Broker expressly reserves the right to cancel your Charter Reservation if full payment is not timely received as set forth in the Charter Agreement.

• Cancellation and Rescheduling . You may cancel or change your Charter Reservation as set forth in the Charter Agreement by and among you, the Charter Provider and/or Broker. Please note that some Charter Providers do not permit changes to or cancellation of reservations after they are made, or after a certain date, as indicated in the Charter Agreement. You agree to abide by the terms of the Charter Agreement with respect to your Charter Reservation. Broker will not be responsible for reimbursing Charterer for any previously tendered deposits or payments by Charterer and disclaims all liability for the failure of a Charter Provider to refund or return any such funds.
• Credit Card Transactions and Chargebacks . If for any reason, any Charter Provider is unable to provide the Charter, or any part thereof, for which you have contracted, your remedy lies against the Charter Provider, and not against Broker. However, Broker will use reasonable efforts to assist you and Charter Provider in reaching a resolution to a dispute between you and the Charter Provider. In the event that your payment has already been transferred from Broker to Charter Provider or to an escrow account, you agree that you will not seek a chargeback against Broker for such amounts transferred. You further agree to indemnify and hold Broker harmless from and against any liability, loss, damage or expense (including without limitation, reasonable attorneys’ fees) that Broker may incur in connection with chargebacks against Broker or under the Charter Agreement and your performance thereunder. If Broker incurs any costs, including but not limited to attorneys’ fees, to recover any payments charged back by your credit card company or other financial institution, you agree that you will be liable for these costs. If your payment is declined for any reason, you agree to settle any amounts owed to Broker via money order, cashier’s check, personal check or bank/ACH transfer immediately.
• Broker Responsibility . Broker makes arrangements with the Charter Provider. Broker additionally makes additional arrangements with other suppliers for the various components and other services that comprise your Charter (“Charter Suppliers”). Broker is not an agent of these Charter Providers or the Charter Suppliers (and the Charter Providers and Charter Suppliers are not agents of Broker). Broker expressly disclaims any liability for the actions or omissions of the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers. The Charter Providers and the Charter Suppliers reserve the right to refuse service to you at their sole discretion. Broker assumes no liability for the acts of the Charter Provider or the Charter Suppliers in refusing service. Broker is not responsible for schedule changes and does not offer compensation for those changes. Broker is not responsible under any circumstances for any injury or damages you may suffer, in connection with sea, air or ground transportation, hotel accommodations, or other travel or excursion services arranged by Broker.

  You understand Broker is not the source or supplier of the Charter or other travel services you requested and acts solely as a broker for the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers. You agree that the Charter Provider and Charter Suppliers whose names appear in the information supplied to you are those who are solely responsible for providing the Charter you purchase. You consent to and request the use of the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers and agree to not hold Broker responsible should any of them: (i) fail to provide the Charter or travel services you purchased, whether or not such services are listed in the Charter Agreement or otherwise, (ii) fail to comply with any applicable law, or (iii) engage in any negligent act or omission that causes you any sort of injury, damage, delay or inconvenience.

By using Broker’s services, you waive and release any claim against Broker, its affiliated and subsidiary companies, and their respective officers, directors, employees, contractors, and agents, arising out of or in connection with any loss of or damage to property or injury to any person caused by reason of (i) any defect, negligence, or other wrongful act or omission, or any failure of performance of any kind, by any Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, or any other provider of sea, airline, hotel, ground transportation or any other travel provider connected to or otherwise associated with the Charter, (ii) any claim for inconvenience, loss of enjoyment, mental distress or other similar claim, (iii) any delayed departure, missed connection, substitute accommodation, termination of service or change in fares or rates, and (iv) overbooking, flight or other travel cancellation, lost or misconnected personal property, or any claim arising out of the air transportation portion of your travel, and (v) or any other claim arising out of or otherwise related to the Charter Agreement or services provided by the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers.

Excepting only liability that directly arises from the gross negligence or willful misconduct of Broker, you will not hold Broker responsible for any injury, damage or loss you may suffer while on a Charter, whether incurred on the Charter or in connection with any other rental, purchase, excursion or activity, regardless of the relationship of any of the foregoing with the Charter Provider or the Charter Suppliers.

• Your Responsibility . By booking a Charter with Broker, you agree to defend and indemnify and hold harmless Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, and each of their respective officers, directors, employees and agents, from and against any and all claims, causes of action, demands, recoveries, losses, damages, fines, penalties or other costs or expenses of any kind or nature, including but not limited to reasonable legal fees, arising out of or in connection with: (i) your breach of these Terms or the documents referenced herein; (ii) your violation of any law or rights of a third party; or (iii) your use of the Broker website.

You will review your Charter Agreement and travel documents for accuracy upon receipt. You understand that it is your responsibility to review the accuracy of all details in the Charter Reservation provided to you, and that you may contact Broker if you have any questions.

You assume full and complete responsibility for checking and verifying any and all passport, visa, vaccination, or other entry requirements of your destination(s), and all conditions regarding health, safety, security, political stability, and labor or civil unrest at such destination(s).

You understand that Broker recommends purchasing travel insurance to cover certain risks inherent in travel such as supplier bankruptcy and the inability to travel due to a medical or personal emergency.

• No Warranties . All Charters, products, services, advice and information is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis without warranties of any kind, either expressed or implied to the fullest extent permitted under the law, including but not limited to, warranties of title or implied warranties of merchantability, satisfactory quality or fitness for a particular purpose. Without limiting the above, no warranty or guarantee is made (i) regarding the acceptance of any reservation request or Charter Reservation; (ii) regarding the availability of Charters, or any other product and/or services through Broker; (iii) that the use of Broker’s website will be error-free; or (iv) regarding the completeness, accuracy, reliability or quality of any information, content, data, service, advice or merchandise provided by Broker or through Broker’s website.

Broker has no special knowledge regarding the Charter Provider’s or Charter Supplier’s financial condition, unsafe conditions, health hazards, weather hazards, or climate extremes at locations to which you may travel during or otherwise in connection with your Charter.

• Limitation on Liability . In no event shall Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, and/or their respective affiliates, or any employees, agents, officers, directors, members or managers of any of the foregoing (“Broker and Charter Releasees”), be liable for any direct, indirect, punitive, incidental, special or consequential damages arising out of, or in any way connected with, your access to, display of or use the Broker’s website, the Charter or services provided to you in connection with the Charter (including, but not limited to, your reliance upon opinions of the Broker), whether based on a theory of negligence, contract, tort, strict liability, consumer protection statutes, or otherwise, and even if Broker and/or any other of the Broker and Charter Releasees have been advised of the possibility of such damages.

If, despite the limitation above, Broker or the Broker and Charter Releasees are found liable for any loss or damage which arises out of or in any way connected with any of the occurrences described above, then Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Supplier and the Broker and Charter Releasees will in no event exceed, in the aggregate, the greater of (a) the Broker Fee, and (b) One-Hundred Dollars (US $100.00).

The foregoing limitation of liability reflects the allocation of risk between the parties. The limitations specified in this section will survive and apply even if any limited remedy specified in these Terms is found to have failed of its essential purpose. The limitations of liability provided in these Terms inure to the benefit of Broker and/or its providers.

The foregoing does not affect any liability which cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law.

• Limitation on Time to File Claims . ANY CAUSE OF ACTION OR CLAIM YOU MAY HAVE ARISING OUT OF RELATING TO BROKER’S SERVICES OR THE WEBSITE MUST BE COMMENCED WITHIN ONE (1) YEAR AFTER THE CAUSE OF ACTION ACCRUES, OTHERWISE, SUCH CAUSE OF ACTION OR CLAIM IS PERMANENTLY BARRED.
• Waiver . No waiver by Broker of any term or condition set forth in these Terms shall be deemed a further or continuing waiver of such term or condition or a waiver of any other term or condition, and any failure of the Broker to assert a right or provision under these Terms shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision.
• Severability . If any provision of these Terms is held by a court or other tribunal of competent jurisdiction to be invalid, illegal or unenforceable for any reason, such provision shall be eliminated or limited to the minimum extent such that the remaining provisions of the Terms will continue in full force and effect.
• Governing Law and Mandatory Venue . The laws of the State of Florida govern the rights and obligations of the parties to this Agreement and the interpretation, construction and enforceability thereof. You agree that any action or proceeding initiated by Charterer against Broker shall be brought solely in the federal and state courts of Hillsborough County, Florida, and you submit to the jurisdiction of those courts and waive any objections to the exercise of personal jurisdiction over you by those courts. In the event any action or proceeding is initiated by Charterer in a court outside of Hillsborough County, Florida, Charterer agrees to pay Broker’s costs and reasonable attorneys’ fees associated with defending such action or proceeding and waives any and all defenses to the transfer of said action or proceeding, whether jurisdictional or otherwise, to a federal or state court in Hillsborough County, Florida.

Sailing classic yacht BLACK SWAN (ex S/Y Brynhild) is a truly beautiful 40.20 m (131' 11") Camper & Nicholsons yacht launched in 1899 and designed by Charles E. Nicholson. Black Swan underwent a major refit in 2000/2002, where most of the bottom planking was renewed and the whole deck structure carefully reconditioned. She received a completely new set of spars and rigging, and the two original engines were rebuilt, as well as all technical, electric and plumbing equipment. She underwent her latest refit in 2018.

The Black Swan is the ideal way to experience a lovely classic sailboat and a fantastic yacht for an exotic, romantic sailing vacation. With six professional crew, she can cater to your every whim and luxury.

Now that the refit is complete, BLACK SWAN comfortably accommodates up to 10 charter guests. The owner's master cabin has a large double bed to port and a settee to starboard with its en-suite shower/toilets and two washbasins.

The guest's accommodation is made up of five cabins offering various alternatives for berth organization. Two guest cabins are situated forward of the saloon and have with upper and lower berths. Aft, there are two additional guest cabins with large beds plus an extra Pullman berth. All guest cabins have en-suite showers and toilets.

Woman Who Fatally Shot Black Neighbor After Complaining About Her Kids Playing Outside Found Guilty Susan Lorincz, 59, claimed 35-year-old Ajike “AJ” Owens’ kids were trespassing on her Ocala, Fla., property and threatened to beat her up in June 2023 FACEBOOK; MARION COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE Susan Lorincz, the White woman who shot her Black neighbor through her front door after complaining about the neighbor’s children playing outside, has been found guilty of manslaughter. Jurors in Marion County, Fla., found Susan Lorincz, 59, guilty of manslaughter by use of a firearm on Friday, Aug. 16, after a week-long trial concerning the June 2023 death of 35-year-old Ajike “AJ” Owens, according to a news release from the Fifth Judicial Circuit State Attorney's Office. The shooting happened on June 2, 2023, after Lorincz claimed Owens’ kids were trespassing on her Ocala, Fla., property and one of the children allegedly threatened to beat her up, according to the 911 call on the day of the incident, which was reviewed by PEOPLE . According to an arrest affidavit obtained by PEOPLE, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office said that over the past several years, Lorincz had become angry at Owens’ children, who would often play in a field close to her home.  In an interview with police, Lorincz admitted to “having used the n-word toward children out of anger in the past and also to calling children other derogatory terms,” according to the affidavit. Authorities previously said that on the evening of the shooting, Lorincz got into an argument with the children and threw a roller skate at Owens’ 10-year-old son, striking him in the toe, and later swung an umbrella at another son. “After learning of this, [Owens], accompanied by her 10-year-old son, approached Lorincz’s home,” the affidavit states. “[Owens] then knocked on Lorincz’s door multiple times and demanded that Lorincz come outside. Lorincz then fired one shot through the door, striking Owens in her upper chest.” Ajike Shantrell Owens/Faebook Lorincz claimed that she acted in self-defense, according to authorities, and that Owens tried to break down her door prior to the shooting. Lorincz also claimed that Owens had come after her in the past and had previously attacked her.  During the investigation, authorities spoke to neighbors who reported that Lorincz was constantly harassing the children for playing near her home. One neighbor claimed to officers that Lorincz called in “false reports on them,” the affidavit states. The sheriff’s office later said investigators determined that “Lorincz’s actions were not justifiable under Florida law,” and she was arrested on a manslaughter charge. Despite a plea from Owens' family to bring murder charges, State Attorney Bill Gladson cited "insufficient evidence" to proceed with a charge of second-degree murder, a first-degree felony. “My obligation as State Attorney is to follow the law in each case that I prosecute,” he said in a statement in June 2023 . “I did so in this case, and while some may not agree with that decision, I can assure you that the decision was thoughtful and made without consideration of any factors other than the specific facts of this terrible crime.” On a GoFundMe campaign created to support Owens' four children, the single mother was remembered for her "infectious personality" and as someone who had a "smile that would light up the room." “This case is undoubtedly a tragic reminder of the devastating consequences of gun violence,” Gladson said in the news release. “The defendant’s choices have left four young children without their mother, a loss that will be felt for the rest of their lives.” Gladson added, “While today’s verdict can’t bring AJ back, we hope it brings some measure of justice and peace to her family and friends.” To help combat systemic racism, consider learning from or donating to these organizations: Campaign Zero works to end police brutality in America through research-proven strategies. Australia may be facing the risk of a “black swan” event that threatens the birds that gave the theory its name. Farmers, retailers and conservationists are all bracing themselves for the return of migratory ducks and geese in September that may be infected with the H5N1 bird flu variant. That could have a devastating effect on Australia’s birdlife: ranging from the small little penguin colonies, to the giant poultry farms that provide much of the country’s protein, to the native black swans that inspired Nassim Nicholas Taleb’s theory about unexpected events . Australia ’s strict biosecurity laws — which involve confiscating meat and fruit from tourists, quarantining pets entering the country for weeks and spraying airline passengers with insecticide — have helped keep many agricultural diseases at bay including, thus far, H5N1. A breach could have a catastrophic impact on the country’s agricultural sector and reignite food inflation. With an election looming, a further rise in meat prices would have political implications. For Adrian Turner, a Silicon Valley cyber security veteran who has returned to his native Australia, the potentially devastating impact of bird flu highlights that food security is fast becoming a new threat frontier that governments and companies need to prepare for. He pointed to the disruption in grain and fertiliser markets after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine as an example of how food security is fast becoming a matter of national security. Turner runs an AgTech start-up called ExoFlare and believes that Australia can carve out a global role as the “Palo Alto Networks of biosecurity” due to its long-established processes. He is not alone. A fundraising for ExoFlare last month was backed by Tesla chair Robyn Denholm’s family office alongside supermarket chain Woolworths and Cultiv8’s Agriculture and Food Fund. Other investors included former Rabobank Australia chief executive Peter Knoblanche and perhaps, most tellingly, In-Q-Tel — the defence venture capital company linked to the CIA that was an early investor in Palantir and Anduril. ExoFlare’s systems were used across 700 sites to help contain an earlier outbreak of a milder form of bird flu in Australia this year. It triggered an egg shortage but could have been much worse. ExoFlare systems are used to track animal and people movements from affected farms so that sites can be locked down at speed while other clean sites can continue to operate. ExoFlare, which was incubated by the agriculture technology accelerator SparkLabs Cultiv8, believes that the biosecurity threat — and opportunity — extends far beyond the farm gate. Its chief technology officer has Disneyland and shopping mall Westfield’s owner on his CV and so has a deep experience in a different type of herd management. Turner said the creation of digital audit trails for agricultural products could soon have a significant impact on trade: countries with poor reputations for biosecurity will be able to provide assurance that goods are disease-free. ExoFlare is already looking to expand into cross-border freight data analysis. Dennis Voznesenski, an economist with Commonwealth Bank of Australia, said biosecurity plays a critical role in a country’s status as a “reliable supplier” of meat, grains and livestock but can also reduce the carbon intensity of canola oil, which is exported to Europe for use in biofuels, as Australia uses fewer chemicals to control pests and weeds. “Biosecurity can be both an indirect and direct selling point,” he said. Turner believes biosecurity will soon be as important a topic in boardrooms as climate change and that companies could need to hire “chief biosecurity officers”. He compared the discussions around the subject to the early days of cyber security, when companies did not understand why they should pay for digital protection, and expects the discussion to evolve in a similar way. “In the early days of cyber we had firewalls, which is like Border Force stopping biosecurity at the border. Then it moved to antivirus, which is like checking for poor biosecurity practices. In the future we will move to genomics to look for anomalies which is like deep packet inspection,” said Turner. Another similarity is the interconnectedness of global food networks which, like communications systems, means that an issue, whether inadvertent or a deliberate attack, can have a devastating effect. The role of biosecurity has a clear role to play in future food security and trade. With threats such as H5N1, Australia and other countries will need to be vigilant. Mineral sands mining plans spark water concerns in Murray-Darling Basin By Else Kennedy Topic: Environmental Impact Stewart McCann is worried about salty groundwater coming to the surface in an otherwise fertile cropping region. ( ABC Rural: Else Kennedy ) Farmers in the Murray-Darling Basin fear proposed mineral sand mines could raise water tables and increase soil salinity. Mining companies plan to pump billions of litres of water annually into on-site pits if the projects are approved. What's next?  The NSW and Victorian governments will consider the applications for two major projects in their states. Mining companies hunting for resources to fuel Australia’s renewable energy transition have bold plans to build mineral sand mines, and minerals processing plants, in the heart of Australia's Murray-Darling Basin. Farmers fear those plans, which involve pumping billions of litres of water each year into pits at proposed mine sites, will raise the surrounding water tables, increasing salinity on land farmers rely on for their livelihoods. These concerns are particularly acute in the fertile wheatbelt south of Swan Hill, in northern Victoria, where lush paddocks of cereals and legumes sit atop a groundwater system that contains water as salty as the ocean. The region was once an ancient inland sea, and mining company VHM has discovered it is rich in rare earth elements, zirconium and titanium. Highly saline groundwater beneath northern Victoria flows to the earth's surface at spectacular salt pans like Lake Tyrrell, or Direl. ( Supplied: Chris O'Connell ) Farmers in the region have treated the aquifer with caution since they began farming the land 150 years ago, knowing if the salt water rose too close to the soil's surface, trees and crops would die. But they say a proposal to build a mineral sands mine in the heart of the region risks doing just that. Near the town of Lalbert, VHM has proposed a 1,500-hectare mine — digging down to a depth of up to 43 metres to extract minerals that are increasingly valuable for building the components needed for modern technologies like wind turbines and electric vehicles. The company is proposing to pump between 3.1 and 4.5 gigalitres of water per year from nearby Kangaroo Lake to extract and process the minerals before sending them away for sale. Farmer Stewart McCann said he was concerned pumping that volume of water into the site would cause the surrounding water table to rise. "There will be areas that are prime country that will be affected with an overloading of the water tables," he said. "The water table is salty. It's saltier than sea water. It'll kill the crops and the trees." Hydrologist Phillip Macumber, who was the first person to map the Parilla Sands aquifer below VHM's proposed mine site decades ago, said pumping large volumes of water into the area would cause "mounding", or a localised rise in groundwater. Stewart McCann says the low-lying cropping land needs to be protected. ( ABC Rural: Else Kennedy ) "What bothers me ... is these pits are enormous," he told an inquiry into the proposed mine. "That mine is going to be at least 7 kilometres long." As the groundwater flowed from east to west through the site, Dr Macumber said the mine would "act as a barrier, similar to putting a dam wall in, which will raise the groundwater". "It brings home the instability in the southern Australian groundwater systems. It doesn't take much to tilt them from that stable, low level system, to fill them up," he said. Mining company VHM has submitted a proposal to the Victorian government to mine mineral sands south of Swan Hill. ( Supplied: VHM ) An independent panel held an inquiry into the proposed mine earlier this year, and has submitted its recommendations to Victorian planning minister Sonya Kilkenny. Ms Kilkenny is yet to make a decision on whether the proposed mine can go ahead.  A VHM spokesperson said in a statement the company was "not in a position to provide comment on matters which are subject to the minister's assessment". If the company was granted a mining licence, "VHM will be required to implement a groundwater management plan as the framework to manage and mitigate potential risks to groundwater," the spokesperson said. Lake Victoria 'at risk'  Across the border in south-west NSW, a second mining company has submitted a proposal to dig for mineral sands 25km from Lake Victoria — a natural lake used to store water for South Australia. Mining company RZ Resources has submitted plans to use a dredge-mining technique to extract the valuable minerals, then process them at the site, known as the Copi project, before shipping them to Brisbane by rail. The plan would require pumping between 4.5 and 9.6 gigalitres per year of highly saline groundwater up to the surface to use at the mine, according to the Environmental Impact Statement the company submitted to the NSW government. Lake Victoria is a major Murray-Darling Basin storage used to supply water to SA. ( ABC Mildura-Swan Hill: Christopher Testa ) Farmer Warren Duncan, who runs merino sheep on a pastoral lease between the proposed mine site and Lake Victoria, said the company's plans could kill vegetation on surrounding agricultural land. "If you bring it [groundwater] up to the surface and put it on the actual topsoil, it'll kill it, and it'll kill it for years," Mr Duncan said. "It's probably better than Roundup [herbicide] as far as it's very long term, as far as absolutely destroys the soil." Mr Duncan said bore tests at a site close to the proposed mine found the groundwater in the area measured about four times saltier than seawater.   Warren Duncan is concerned mining at RZ Resources' proposed Copi mineral sands mine in south-west NSW will raise the water table. ( ABC Rural: Else Kennedy ) Lake supplies drinking water to SA Even though Lake Victoria is in New South Wales, it is operated by SA Water, the South Australian water authority. When full, the wide, shallow lake holds 677 gigalitres of water and covers 12,200ha. RZ Resources chief executive Campbell Jones said in a statement: "The Copi Project's Environmental Impact Statement includes a comprehensive assessment of groundwater impact, which has been made publicly available as part of the exhibition process." Once-thriving box gum trees on farmer Warren Duncan's property have died as a result of what he says is a decision by water authorities to keep water levels in Lake Victoria artificially high. ( ABC Rural: Else Kennedy ) Water authority SA Water responded to the EIS with the concern that "the proposed short and long-term monitoring of groundwater bores and network does not seem sufficient to provide advance notice of any issues that may be caused by the proposal". The authority called on the company to install and publicly report "additional monitoring on the local and regional networks". "This monitoring should be enduring as any impacts will potentially last into the decades to remediate," the authority wrote. Mr Jones said RZ Resources had been "considering the responses received from individuals and government agencies" and would respond to them. A spokesperson for the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure said in a statement the government would decide whether to approve the proposal based on the "adequacy" of RZ's response. "DPHI will then undertake a comprehensive assessment of groundwater and surface water impacts, including on Lake Victoria. This will be guided by advice from experts from the Water Division of NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water," the spokesperson said. Project by project approach 'failing' University of Sydney postdoctoral research associate and Minerals Policy Institute chairperson Lian Sinclair said Australia needed to update its mining assessment process to consider the cumulative impact of multiple mining projects on a region as a critical minerals mining boom got underway. "This is particularly pertinent in regions like in the Murray basin, where there are several different mineral sands proposals at the same time," Dr Sinclair said. In addition to RZ Resources' proposed Copi Project and VHM's proposed Goschen mineral sands project, mining company Iluka has received approved to mine for mineral sands at Balranald in NSW. Astron Corporation has also received approval to mine for mineral sands at Minyip in Victoria. "The project by project approach is failing. We need a cumulative regional approach," Dr Sinclair said. Lian Sinclair says Australia needs to update its mining assessment process to consider the impact of multiple mines on regions. "As part of the government's Nature Positive reforms, national environmental standards will be implemented to ensure critical habitat and other significant environmental matters are protected, including from cumulative impacts," they said. "The Nature Positive reforms also include the development of 'regional plans' as a tool available to manage the cumulative impacts of industries such as critical minerals mining at a regional scale. None of the current regional plan pilots are located in the Murray Basin area.
