Dave Portnoy rescued by Coast Guard after drifting out to sea: 'Almost lost Captain Dave'

"captain dave may never go on the boat again," said portnoy..

find yachts at sea

Barstool Sports' owner and founder Dave Portnoy was rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard after losing control of his boat off the Massachusetts' coast.

"You boys almost lost Captain Dave today," said Portnoy in a TikTok video he posted explaining what happened. "Captain Dave almost was lost to the ocean."

On Monday, Portnoy took his mother out on a boat ride off the coast of Nantucket, he said. Portnoy did not try to turn on the boat before unhooking it from the from the buoys. He drifted out and attempted to turn on the boat only to find that the boat had no power.

Content warning: Video below contains language that is not suitable for all audiences .

The boat had no power, radio or anchor and there were heavy winds which caused him to drift out to sea, Portnoy explained.

"Next thing you know, Captain Dave is lost at sea," said Portnoy.

The Barstool founder began screaming for help as he sailed, and shot a distress signal from a flare gun he kept onboard the boat.

Coast Guard rescues Portnoy

According to Portnoy, a woman "in what looks like a rowboat," boarded his boat and asked if they can make a TikTok together, said Portnoy. He declined her request and then used her radio to contact the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard made it to Portnoy's location where they tied up his boat and towed it back.

This was Portnoy's third, and possibly last time captaining a boat.

"Captain Dave may never go on the boat again," he said.

USA TODAY reached out to the Coast Guard for comment.

The seas are vast. And they claim vessels in significant numbers. The yachts Cheeki Rafiki , Niña , Munetra , Tenacious are just some of the more high-profile names on a list of lost or capsized vessels which grows by hundreds each year.

Yet it took the disappearance of flight MH370, now declared lost with no survivors , to demonstrate how difficult it can be to find something in the open ocean. As the search continued, incredulity grew: exactly how, in the 21st century, is it possible to lose a 64-metre aircraft?

There are great unknowns at sea: planes and boats go missing. Illegal fishing and piracy are easy to conduct – and small vessels can smuggle powerful weapons and dangerous individuals. The technology to improve this situation already exists, we just need to make better use of it.

The view from above

Satellites provide the vantage point necessary to monitor large areas of ocean. Spacecraft carrying synthetic aperture radar (SAR) can provide high-quality images with resolution down to a metre, regardless of the weather. But the relatively small number of spacecraft equipped with SAR, and the dawn-to-dusk orbits which most occupy, also limit the times of day when they can provide coverage.

To offer comprehensive monitoring at sea, we need to bring together different types of imaging, including radar and photographic images in the human-visible wavelength. This is often overlooked for maritime purposes due to the effects of cloud, rain, and darkness that limit its use. But there are enough satellites with the capability that could provide excellent coverage.

Detail and coverage

The two key requirements for effective monitoring are high spatial resolution (good detail) and a large field of view (wide area). One tends to come at the expense of the other, so that a device – whether it is a camera, satellite or radar – capable of detecting small vessels will usually only be able to scan an area a few tens of kilometres wide, making it both unlikely that the search area of interest has been recorded and rendering subsequent searches very slow.

But the situation is changing. The number of imagers is growing rapidly. In our recently published study , we identified 54 satellites carrying 85 sensors which offer useful resolution and could be accessed commercially (excluding military surveillance spacecraft). Companies such as PlanetLabs are in the process of launching many more.

While each satellite’s imaging device generates an image track only 10-100km across, the motion of the satellite as it orbits the Earth effectively “scans” that track so that the image is narrow in one dimension but circles the world in the other. With orbital periods of around 90 minutes, one satellite makes around 16 passes over the daylit hemisphere every day. The combined imaging work of all these satellites now make a significant contribution to our awareness of maritime traffic.

Image early, image often

Imagery used in search-and-rescue operations is usually taken after the target is lost. In the case of the Niña which disappeared off the coast of New Zealand, eight days elapsed between last radio contact and the alarm being raised. For MH370, the search area evolved over periods of weeks. In both cases, ocean currents carry evidence away from the accident site, while debris disperses and sinks, making it more difficult to identify by satellite.

It would be far better to have an archive of recent, regularly updated images so that the recent history of a location over a period of several days can be examined. This could offer evidence of the vessel’s course or state, or pick up on areas of fresh, concentrated debris.

Making the best of what we have

Satellites with visible wavelength cameras are generally used for gathering images of land. What if satellite operators could generate revenue by taking images of the oceans? The limited resources on satellites mean that it isn’t generally possible to constantly take images, to store that data and transmit it all in the next available contact with the ground (which may be some time after an image is acquired). As it is, it’s not possible to create a global maritime monitoring system of this kind without purpose-built spacecraft with bigger data storage and more frequent contact with ground stations to download it.

But it is possible to monitor high-priority areas of heavy traffic, protected fisheries and security-critical regions, with co-operation between operators of existing spacecraft (for which there are precedents such as George Clooney’s Satellite Sentinel Project , which uses satellites to gather evidence of atrocities and war crimes), and incentives, perhaps involving maritime insurance companies.

Retrieving hundreds of gigabytes of data a day from satellites requires a new approach to ground stations. One solution may be to “crowdsource”: to create a network of stations operated by small institutions, universities and individuals to spread the burden of downloading data and increasing the periods during which data can be recorded and transmitted.

There are groups working on automated vessel-detection algorithms – and crowdsourcing also has a role here, such as TomNod , for example, which asked members of the public to help inspect images online in the search for Niña. How much more effective could search and rescue be if the power of crowdsourcing was applied to each stage of data acquisition, storage and processing, combined with high-quality images taken around the time the vessel was lost?

Rubrio was fortunate to have grown up in the beautiful island of Madeira, surrounded by both sea and mountains. He was raised on sailing boats and developed a passion for everything both above and below the ocean’s surface, at a young age. As a water sports enthusiast, he explored all aspects of sailing from professional racing to cruising slowly around the world. He then went on to motor yachts and ran vessels ranging from small power boats and monohulls to large super yachts. Rubrio now has over 25 years of professional captain and commercial charter experience. He is dynamic, sporty, a lover of animals, is easy going and always enters the room with a smile and leaves charter guests with an experience to last a lifetime. Liza’s love for sailing started at a young age, spending summers on her parents’ sailboat in the Netherlands where she was born and raised. With her two brothers, she spent much of her free time doing adventure sports, either on the water or mountain climbing. Throughout her student years in Amsterdam and Greece, she worked in various hospitality jobs. After obtaining her Master’s degree, she started a 10-year corporate career as a Customer Experience Manager, consulting multinationals on how to create memorable experiences for their customers. After working as a chef on several owner charters in the Mediterranean and working as a crew chef on an Atlantic Crossing, Liza not only fell in love with the Virgin Islands but she also learned how much she loves creating memorable experiences through her food. She is a true believer that the way to people’s hearts is through their stomachs. After working as a sous-chef in the 2024 summer season in the Mediterranean and her Yacht Chef culinary training in London, she is excited to start the next charter season in the Caribbean. Sam and Zina were simply the best!!! We have vacationed many places but truly nothing compares to the friendship, care, expertise, food and love that we received from them. Zinas cooking was absolutely 5 star.!!! Sam was a guide, a friend, a bartender- a man of all trades!!! If you are even considering this wonderful trip - just do it!!! They are the best! We will return and won’t want one thing different!! Well.. except perhaps an extended stay. This boat is magnificent!!. It is so clear that the owner only chooses the best of everything. Sam and Zina lovingly care for the boat and for the passengers. The owner shared his wonderful wine. Everything was absolute perfection!! - Stacey

April 2024 BVI Charter

Not enough stars to give to our crew. Sam and Zina were the BEST! One of the best vacations we have had; enjoyed every minute. Every meal planned by Zina was too good to miss; she took amazing care of us. Sam kept us laughing and entertained, and his attention to details kept us feeling safe. Hope to come back soon and will definitely look for Sam and Zina´s charter. - Kathy Every aspect of this trip exceeded expectations! The Respite at Sea was beautiful and spacious - it was immaculately clean and organized at all times. The most amazing aspect of the trip was our hosts/captain/chef/first mate, Sam and Zina! They were both gracious, kind, knowledgeable, attentive, FUN hosts! They were both patient and accommodating with all our needs and requests – from things we wanted to do, places we wanted to go, what we wanted to drink, what we wanted to eat. They planned and executed everything and anything that we asked! The food Zina prepared was beautiful AND delicious - every meal was a special event! We LOVED everything about our experience, and we can’t wait to go on another adventure with Sam and Zina! - Karen A trip of a Lifetime and Sam and Zina made sure we were treated to a First Class Boat, First Class Captaincy and First Class Food. I would recommend Respite At Sea but only with Sam and Zina as Captain and Crew. We were allowed to sit back and relax while Sam and Zina did ALL the work and at the same time waited on us hand and foot. What a team. - Billy Sam and Zina were AMAZING! In addition to being great and fun people, they are wonderful at what they do. Zina is a great cook. The meals and presentation were always a highlight of the day. We knew we were always in good shape with Sam. He knew exactly what he was doing, And- he always had a smile on his face and had everything under control. Sam and Zina looked after the Respite at Sea meticulously! An incredible trip. I give Sam and Zina and Respite at Sea the highest recommendation possible! - Daniel Clayton

March 2024 BVI Charter

We could not have asked for a better week or a better crew. The boat was very comfortable and Zina’s food was amazing! Captain Sam is not only a great captain but managed to keep two teenage boys highly entertained! What an incredible family trip and I can’t thank you enough for being so wonderful with the boys. We will have memories to last a lifetime! Hope to see you two again. Perhaps a charter to St Martin and St Barts if we could sway you to leave the BVI’s. Take care! Suzy, KD, Frank & Sam

February 2024 BVI Charter

I had an amazing once-in-a-lifetime trip with Sam as captain and diving instructor, and Zina as chef extraordinaire. The food was absolutely amazing. Every meal blew me away in presentation, taste, and variety. Each day was filled with new and fun adventures. I never imagined I would learn to scuba, but Sam made the experience feel safe and doable. I’m excited to continue more diving in the future. I highly recommend Sam and Zina, your every need will be taken care of before you even know you need it. -Becky Our trip on the Respite at Sea could not have been better. There are so many wonderful things to say about it that I could go on for pages. The boat was beautiful. We enjoyed every inch of it. Everyone in our group absolutely loved the Seabobs as well as the paddle boards and snorkeling equipment. Our itinerary took us to gorgeous, incredible places where we explored beaches, restaurants and little towns. But the best part of our trip was definitely Sam and Zina. Sam made everything fun and each experience felt unique. He was the preeminent guide, captain and bartender. Both he and Zina were kind and funny and were attuned to our every want and need. The meals that Zina made for us were unbelievably delicious. It is not an exaggeration to say that she could be a chef in a fine restaurant. The only thing that I would change about our trip would be to make it longer! -Sara

Our trip on Respite at Sea was literally the trip of a lifetime. Captain (and bartender) Sam and Chef Zina were phenomenal. They took such attentive and amazing care of us and the itinerary was everything we could have hoped for and more. Zina´s food can’t be described….better than anything you could get at the restaurants. Still dreaming of her chicken curry. They went out of their way to make it unforgettable! Thank you! -The Stimsons

My husband and I recently spent 5 nights on Respite at Sea with another couple. It was fabulous! Sam and Zina are wonderful and clearly take great pride in their careers! Zina´s food was fantastic as were Sam´s drinks! We were able to try scuba diving with Sam and absolutely loved it. We hope to be back with our kids in the future. Thank you for such a memorable adventure!! Maggie & Aaoron

Sam & Zina were absolutely wonderful hosts! It was our first-time charting for a week and could not have picked a crew who fit us better. Sam is a focused and safe Captain who clearly knows his boat (and, how to make fantastic cocktails). Zina is an amazing Chef whose food combinations will blow your mind. Both Sam and Zina made us all feel at home right away, we were comfortable upon first setting our bare feet on their boat. There are many boats and many crews, but only one Sam and Zina...Champions! -The Myers

January 2024 BVI Charter

Can’t imagine a week in the BVIs being any better. The Respite at Sea was a perfect vessel for 3 couples to explore in. It’s a relatively new boat with all the “bells and whistles “. It has 3 nice bedrooms, each with bathrooms. The crew, Sam and Zina, are exceptionally accommodating and take care of every detail. Doesn’t hurt that Zina is also a world class chef. Most importantly, these two are great people who are lot of fun to be around for a week at sea!

Outstanding experience! Respite at Sea was ideal from the layout to the very comfortable seating areas and beds. The sailing was the highlight and very stable even in higher winds and some swells. Sam and Zina deliver an amazing level of service and Sam brings good fun and humor all day long and Zina´s cuisine was absolutely delicious. We highly recommend Respite at Sea and Sam/Zina. -Rob and Chrissy

Sam and Zina made our first experience living on the water truly amazing. From Sea bobbing, paddle boarding, snorkeling, scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, wake boarding and water skiing to exploring beautiful places and lively establishments. Sam kept us as busy as we wanted to be. He introduced his love of scuba diving to our son who now can’t wait to become certified this summer. Everything was top notch! Sam and Zina’s welcoming personalities and knowledge of sailing made us feel right at home from the second we stepped on board. Zina took the time to prepare delicious meals that we couldn’t get enough of. My husband is Pescatarian and she thoughtfully prepared all his meals including special vegan desserts just for him. Respite at Sea was the perfect home away from home with so many areas to spread out and enjoy family time. Having traveled extensively, this was one our most memorable vacations thus far. We’re looking forward to doing it again with Sam and Zina on Respite at Sea!

Sam and Zina Past Charter Review

Our family of four took a seven day Christmas Grenadines islands cruise on the JimJams catamaran with Captain Sam and crew Zina. It was a truly wonderful experience! While the boat is very luxurious and well appointed, the real treat is the service provided by Sam and Zina. First the food: prior to our cruise we were asked about our food and beverage preferences, which we provided by email. Every meal, breakfast, lunch and dinner, contained scrumptious, healthy variety, all personally prepared by Zina, with Sam’s assistance. Fresh fish, meats prepared on the outdoor grill, and the bread and pasta were always made from scratch. Interesting and delicious appetizers, specialty drinks, and combinations of food that we had never experienced before. We HAD to ask them for their interesting and delicious meatball recipe. Next, the service: Sam and Zina brought a youthful exuberance and energy to the sometimes difficult and challenging tasks during the Christmas winds, that was fun and inspiring to watch. Our every request was greeted with a “can do”attitude, and our expectations were usually exceeded. Sam is quite an accomplished sailor, and Zina is the perfect crew. We must also mention that the boat was kept incredibly clean and fresh. We cannot more highly recommend an excursion with Captain Sam and Zina. We greatly look forward to our next opportunity to sail with them. -The Strumillos We had the privilege of sailing with Sam and Zina in SVG and they were amazing. Zina sure can cook and we loved when Sam would yell “Captains Cocktails”. We ended up buying into the Trade Winds Club just because of them. If we could request Sam and Zina every sail we would! -The Gallaghers These two are an awesome couple and a fantastic crew. Our family had an amazing week, Zina is a sweetheart and great chef and Sam is an excellent captain with the perfect balance of confidence and chill. -Donna Amazing couple and even better crew. Totally in tune to our vacation and what we wanted. They’re passionate about serving the passengers and even more passionate about their jobs!!! -Inna

January 2022 BVI Charter

My wife and I along with two other couples just got off the boat after one of our best trips ever due to the incredible experience that Dee and Ross provided. Being in the service business I greatly appreciate the attention to detail, planning and hospitality. What we all knew was going to be one of our best trips ever was far exceeded with this past weeks amazing experience. You have two of the most unbelievable hosts attending to every detail all while making you feel so special throughout each day. Dee’s menu and cooking was nothing less than 5 plus Stars on every meal! Each surpassing the next. Both their passion for what they do so well and their attentiveness to their guests is unequaled. It might be your boat, but they act as if it is theirs. I am sure you are aware but wanted you to know. I could go on and on about our trip of a lifetime all while knowing each of us having traveled throughout the world to amazing places and exceptional service. They are the absolute best in every way, and we look forward to hopefully being able to experience their amazing hospitality again sometime soon.

December 2021 BVI Charter

The week on The Respite was absolutely PERFECT. Let´s talk about the crew, our new lifelong friends Ross and Dee... I am really struggling to find words to capture how great these two individuals are and how much we value the experience Ross and Dee provided us. Let me do my best... The love and passion that Dee put into each meal resulted in some of the best food we have ever had anywhere much less from a confined galley. Each meal blew our minds and was better than any restaurant we dined at during the trip and frankly most of the top restaurants anywhere in the world. I realize this sounds fabricated, but ´Dee-licious´ as we called her, could not be more talented or passionate about ensuring the group had top notch meals and service. Simply out of this world and we have pictures of each dish to remind us of how good we had it during our week onboard. Thank you Dee, you spoiled us for the week and we are forever grateful! Having the boat decorated for Kristina´s actual Bday was incredibly thoughtful and speaks to your character as genuine and caring.... Onto Captain Ross... There is something special about someone who has a deep pride in his craft which is exactly how I would describe Ross. He ensured we saw all the key spots the BVI has to offer and made our experience magical. Ross is meticulous in all he does to ensure the experience each day beats expectations. He is very knowledgeable of the area and some of our favorite memories are sitting on the fly bridge with a Carib in hand listening to the history of the area. The passion Ross has for the boat and ensuring it´s upkeep makes you believe he is the owner! Each drink poured and each dish cleared was met with a smile and a ´Pleasure´ from Ross that we will never forget. We will forever remember our morning map sessions with Ross where he outlined where we had been the previous day and where we were headed that day. Thank you Ross, we cannot have imagined a better Captain and now friend. I think in summary there are a few thoughts... I considered Ross and Dee part of our crew by day 2. Seriously... we enjoyed having them part of the group and it was a treat to have them join in on all we did throughout the week. We all agreed that when Ross gets the chops to ask for Dee´s hand in marriage our group will be there wherever/whenever in the world it goes down! (Sorry buddy, I had to get that in there!). The final testament to how special of a week we had was the tears my wife shed during our goodbyes... I did my best, but I still don´t think I did justice to our experience... The only other item is the Respite itself which was perfectly appointed and provisioned. We did not want for anything and were completely comfortable in the spacious rooms! -John

July 2021 Charter

Good morning! It is hard to put into words how wonderful our vacation was. Ross and Dee are over the top! They work so well together and are so attentive. The food was incredible, and the presentation was so beautiful. Ross has some mad napkin folding skills! They were so respectful of the catamaran. You would have thought it was their personal property. The diving and snorkeling was fantastic. From the time we arrived until we reluctantly had to be dropped off they made us feel so welcome. We would definitely recommend them to friends or book another trip with them. Thank you so much for booking us with them!

Thank you for taking such great care of our family.

Dee and Ross, Thank you for taking such great care of our family. This trip will forever more be remembered as our “favourite vacation” of all time. There wasn’t a detail missed and we noticed all of them. We can’t wait to see you again, this will not be our last. We appreciate you more than you know, Mr Greminger. Dee and Ross, The cure for anything is salt water.... OR a superb meal from chef Daniella OR a perfectly chartered cruise to the most beautiful bay by Captain Ross. Thank you for the trip of a lifetime. You are now friends and mates, until next time. Bon voyage, Mrs Greminger.

This experience exceeded very high expectations!

Dee and Ross, My favourite moment was arriving on this gorgeous boat to such a warm welcome full of so much promise. Your hard work, attention to detail, easy laughter and clear knowledge were all very much appreciated. You won’t be rid of us so easily - we will be back. Thank you for a week full of incredible memories, new family games and a relaxed husband! With Gratitude, Mrs Miller. To our new friends, Dee and Ross, This experience exceeded very high expectations! Thank you for the celebrating my 50th with me and introducing sailing to my children. Your hard work and good cheer is exemplary, as is your patience, attention to detail and fine cuisine! I am so confident we will meet again soon, with immense gratitude, Mr Miller.

We loved every minute of our week from morning to night.

Dee & Ross, what an amazing week! Thank you so much for a great 50th birthday celebration - it was perfect. It was really hard to pick a “rose” and even think of a “thorn” for the week, everything was unforgettable. Captain Ross, thanks for finding all the wildlife, starting our Instagram careers and boating lessons. Dee, always with a beautiful, warm smile and delicious meals. If only we had a “defuse card” to stop the exploding kitten/end of the vacation. We loved every minute of our week from morning to night. We wish you all the best and hope to sail with you again some day!

Respite at Sea is a wonderful craft and we look forward to more equally splendid excursions aboard her.

Respite at Sea is a wonderful craft and we look forward to more equally splendid excursions aboard her. But only the crew could of Respite could actually overshadow the boat itself. Captain Rosco and Dee were just simply the best hosts that we could have possibly imagined and Tyler as first mate – he typically being a captain himself, only made the situation even more incredible! Rosco made us all feel at ease immediately with his affable nature but we knew when it came to on-board safety and sailing particulars he was serious and in total control and there would be nothing for us to concern. At the same time Dee was just nothing but wonderful in spirit and magnificent at preparing the trip’s meals! Meals, snacks, drinks, coffee, teas – everything was phenomenal! And Tyler was just an all-around everything whether assisting in sailing, food preparation, handling bags and gear, diving – he was right on point and a pleasure to be around. The entire trip was there immediately if we needed them and seemingly invisible if we didn’t. Wherever and whenever we sail in the future we will hope that this crew is available on Respite at Sea!

We had an amazing vacation!

We had an amazing vacation! Dee and Ross could not have done one more thing for us to make it any more amazing. It was simply perfect! We all feel as though we made friends for a lifetime. They are fabulous and we loved them. The boat is beautiful and spacious. Clean as can be. You could eat off the floors and you can tell they put so much effort into taking care of it. The food was incredible. Dee made Gourmet meals every minute. JP (my 18 year old) actually tried new things every day and ate everything. He usually eats like a 10 year old! Ross made delicious new cocktails every night like you get at a trendy bar. We spent 99% of our time on the boat. We went to lovango. It was fine. We had a nice day and it was pretty, but I’m not sure it was worth the price to go and I dont think I would go back. Especially when you love the boat and crew as much as we did, you just want to spend every minute on the boat. We also went to lime out. The floating taco place. That was great. We all loved it. And the final place we went was dinghys. Fun cool beach bar. I guess they are trying to compete with soggy dollar type of bar. That was fun too. We just went for a short time for drinks. They catered to us on every level, From meals, drinks, appetizers, water sports,(water skiing, seabobs wakeboarding, snorkeling), not to mention relaxing... my kids loved them as well. We didn’t sit still much...we actually cried when we said goodbye to our new friends. For us...the boat is important...but, the crew makes the trip. They certainly did not disappoint. We had a blast on every level. Susan

August 2020

My name is Jennifer Blotti and I live with my family in Switzerland. I enjoy traveling a lot and I work as a family travel blogger since many years. After several sailing vacation experiences, in August 2019 we were lucky to meet Daniella and Ross who took us on a catamaran to the Cyclades Islands in Greece. We did not hesitate to contact them again this year for our trip to Croatia because they are able to give us wonderful vacations. Daniella is not only an excellent cook, she is extremely careful to make everything perfect. Her skills in the kitchen are incredible, she can transform everything into excellent dishes, from presentation to the variety of what she offers. She is very attentive to the preferences and needs of the customer. She has delighted us with always different dishes, she has managed to enhance the local raw materials, she has always satisfied our requests. In addition, she always knows how to involve children (our 10 year old twins) in fun activities. It´s nice to see her always with a smile. We have always felt very safe in skipper Ross´ hands, even in the most difficult weather situations. Ross is very precise, responsible and skilful in finding solutions to every problem in order to make the customer feel at ease and will not let you miss anything. The unique places he has made us discover have been chosen with care, he informs about everything and these are the best qualities that a skipper can have. Ross has always organised fun activities for us, so as to involve the whole family. Ross is also a sunny person who always welcomed us with a smile. Last but not least, he knows how to prepare excellent cocktails! I believe that Daniella and Ross are a winning couple, of the highest level, able to turn your holiday into a dream. And we hope to spend our holidays with them next year too.

We have just returned from our wonderful sailing holiday through the Cyclades Islands in Greece with our Family. Our holidays were unforgettable also thanks to the fact that the crew on board was exceptional. For this reason we would like to inform you that both the hostess Daniella Cox and the captain Ross Matthews, both assigned by your agency, have worked with extreme professionalism and enthusiasm, taking care to fulfill all our requests. Daniella has a particular talent for cooking, her dishes have proved beyond our expectations, always presented and served with care and love. Ross has always been careful not only to drive the boat but to make children participate and active, always demonstrating excellent professionalism and availability. Thank you very much.

I wished I could put 11/10 for these two. Dee and Ross went beyond expectations. Dee always had a beautiful smile on her face and cooked amazing food. She was always paying attention to details and was really caring with us. Rosco did a fantastic job at making sure we were always comfortable and informed on what was going on. From the moment we stepped foot on the yacht he made us feel comfortable and at ease. He has a super friendly and relaxed manner and really made the week for us.

I’ve had the pleasure of having some outstanding Captains and First Mates in the past, but Ross and Dee completely step changed any experience we ever had. Ross was phenomenal, from being an excellent, hospitable host to his ability to park his yacht in the smallest of spaces! He was a fantastic captain, always in control and always had a smile on his face. Nothing was too much trouble and Ross would jump at the opportunity to please the guests! Dee impressed us all, her breakfast spreads were outstanding, her lunches even more impressive and her dinners absolutely delicious. I have no idea how she made such elaborate feasts and so many items (all perfectly hot) in such a small kitchen. Her skill is truly impressive! Dee also ensured that each person’s tastes were met, tailoring our portions to our personal preferences. She also kept the yacht communal areas immaculate and provided great advice for each of the ports. These two did an outstanding job and we will be requesting them again next year without a doubt.

What a week, these two make an incredible team and I can’t thank them enough. Let’s start with Dee. She is an adorable bundle of energy with an uncanny ability to make her whole crew feel better about themselves just by bouncing around the yacht. A “Michelin-starred chef” projected to have more insta followers than Kylie Jenner by 2021, this girl could whip a King´s banquet using only a billycan and a bunsen burner. I am already so jealous of her future children´s lunch boxes. Now Rosco, what an absolute 11/10 legend- great banter, made everyone feel at ease on the boat very quickly, ensured everyone had a turn at helping out- whether it was tying fenders or lowering the anchor, whilst making everyone feel at ease doing so. Super chill guy with positive energy over absolutely everything. Would recommend Rosco and Dee to friends for any future trips and would 100% request them on any future trips of mine.

Rosco the salty sea dog was an absolute legend! Great wind awareness and sailing skills, he took the time to teach us a lot throughout the week. We had so much fun with him and Dee, both always smiling with an amazing ability to make you all feel like one big family. They make an awesome couple and a great team on the boat. Daniella went over and above with her hosting and made an incredible variety of fresh and delicious food - I was very impressed by the quality and variety and felt very lucky to have our own chef onboard, could not recommend them both enough.

Barstool Sports ’ founder Dave Portnoy has claimed he almost died at sea when his boat lost power off the coast of Massachusetts.

In a video posted to X , Portnoy recounted the scary ordeal which unfolded when he was out on his boat on Monday.

Referring to himself as Captain Dave and wearing a captain’s hat, Portnoy explained that he planned to take his mom out on the boat off the coast of Nantucket .

But after he unhooked it from the buoy, he discovered both the engine and the breakers were dead – and the boat drifted out to sea.

“Next thing you know, Captain Dave is lost at sea ,” he said.

Portnoy, who did not have a radio, then tried to send distress signals with a flare gun and shouted for help.

Luckily, a woman in “what looks like a row boat” came to his aid and called the Coast Guard using her radio.

A US Coast Guard spokesperson said that it received a report of the roughly 28 foot pleasure craft drifting in Nantucket Harbor.

“Station Brant Point diverted from training and towed the vessel to its mooring,” the statement read.

The Coast Guard advised the public to “go out with various forms of communication like a personal locator beacon and/or VHF radio in case of an emergency”.

“There is no such thing as being too prepared,” the statement added.

In his social media video, Portnoy thanked the Coast Guard for “saving Captain Dave’s life.”

“Captain Dave may never go on a boat again,” he added.

Portnoy is the founder of sports media company Barstool Sports, which he re-acquired for $1 last year from Penn Entertainment, after selling the company for around $550m.

Portnoy, who faced backlash for making sexist remarks about Taylor Swift in 2023, announced in June that he had “beat” skin cancer .

Dave Portnoy had to be rescued by the US Coast Guard on Monday after he and his boat were “nearly lost” at sea.

“Your boys almost lost Captain Dave today. Captain Dave almost was lost to the ocean, mother ocean,” the Barstool Sports founder, 47, revealed in a video shared via X .

Portnoy went on to explain that he was planning to take his mom, Linda, out for a boat ride off Nantucket as she was in town visiting him at this home in Massachusetts.

However, when Portnoy unhooked the 28-foot vessel from the dock and buoys, he realized he made a “critical mistake” as the boat had “no power, no radio, no anchor, no nothing” amid “heavy, heavy winds.”

“Next thing you know, Captain Dave is lost at sea,” he recalled. “[The boat’s] just blowing, [I’m] trying not to crash into ships in the harbor.”

Portnoy said he started screaming for help and also used a flare gun to send a stress signal. Luckily, a woman in a “rowboat” saw him and made her way over to him to assist.

“She boards Captain Dave’s vessel, says, ‘Can I make a TikTok of you, Captain Dave?’ I said, ’No time for TikToks.’ She goes, ‘Well, I don’t have my phone on me anyways,’” he remembered. “[But] her radio works [and she] calls in the Coast Guard.”

Portnoy said that four “burly dudes” from the US Coast Guard arrived shortly after the call was made.

“Captain Dave is out at sea going back and forth, rocking, thinks my life is over. Captain Dave had to be halfway to f–king the Caribbean just rocking, no power, no boat,” he shared.

“Thankfully, Coast Guard, God bless her soul, tied me up, brings me back to my [dock]. Dave lives to tell another tale.”

Portnoy admitted that the ordeal definitely took a toll on him but is thankful to the US Coast Guard for “saving” his life.

He called boating “a dangerous game” and told fans that he “may never go on the boat again” following the stressful incident.

The US Coast Guard Northeast X account later reposted his video, adding, “You’re welcome, Dave. Tell [your dog] Miss Peaches we said hi and remember to boat safe! #SemperParatus.”

As previously reported, the internet personality has spent his summers in the idyllic vacation town for years before purchasing a whopping $42 million mansion last year .

The incident marked the second time this summer that Portnoy has had a scare, since he recently revealed that he had a mole removed from his neck after discovering he had skin cancer .

“So it was a mole. I’m starting to get on top of myself so I went to a doctor, did the skin thing and they scrape it and one of them came back as, like, cancerous, so it’s like, ‘Boop, gotta take it out,’” he said last month during one of his podcast episodes.

E1 relaunches Pilot Academy in search of electric boat racers to compete in the 2025 season

Avatar for Scooter Doll

Have you ever dreamt of competing at the professional race level in gorgeous coastal locations around the globe? Now is your chance to step up and join the nascent E1 electric boat racing series . E1 has reopened its Pilot Academy in search of fresh talent that will compete in the racing series’ second season in 2025.

The UIM E1 World Championship is a new electric boat racing series currently in its inaugural season. This year’s competition consists of nine teams of male and female pilots led by notable names in sports, entertainment, and racing, including Sergio Garcia, Tom Brady, Will Smith, and Steve Aoki .

To date, the first class of E1 pilots have competed in three Grand Prix around the world and have two more on the 2024 calendar in Monaco and Lake Como ahead of the inaugural championship in Hong Kong this November.

The young racing league continues to garner momentum in its first season but already has its sights set on year two. It intends to bring in a fresh class of new talent to compete on the water. To do so, E1 is relaunching its Pilot Academy, where racing hopefuls of all backgrounds will get their shot at joining the roster in 2025.

E1 opens Pilot Academy to recruit more talent for 2025

Per an update from the E1 Series today, it is once again turning to its Pilot Academy in search of fresh talent to round out its racing roster next year.

The E1 academy offers a comprehensive talent identification program for male and female pilots, where recruits will undergo rigorous trials overseen by renowned powerboating figures like Mathilda Wiberg and Claire Toohey.

Several pilots from E1’s inaugural electric boat racing academy are already competing around the world, including Anna Glennon from Team Miami, which is owned by musical artist Marc Anthony. Glennon spoke about the opportunity she has been given after being selected from the Pilot Academy:

Competing in the RaceBird is more like flying than driving – it’s an unreal experience. It’s a unique beast that takes time and intuition to tame – success comes from working in harmony with the RaceBird. this is a new art form of racing that takes an incredible amount of finesse. It’s been an incredible privilege to be a part of it.

E1 states its racing academy will deliver a structured training program designed to educate aspiring contenders with essential skills and knowledge, including safety, media, and fitness training, in addition to hands-on experience piloting various boats.

From there, successful candidates will join a ‘pilot pool,’ from which E1 teams will select their racers for 2025. E1 states it is on the lookout for athletes from various racing backgrounds and disciplines and is accepting applications to the academy now. To learn more, contact  [email protected]

Dave Portnoy had to be rescued by the Coast Guard after losing control of his boat near Nantucket

Dave Portnoy stands on the sidelines at the NBA Finals

The owner and founder of Barstool Sports lost control of a boat off Massachusetts before being rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Dave Portnoy, 47, said in a TikTok video that the harrowing Monday rescue off Nantucket happened after he unhooked his boat from buoys. Heavy winds then caused him to drift out to sea, and his engine was dead, he said.

Portnoy said another boater saw that he was in distress and radioed the Coast Guard.

Coast Guard rescuers towed the boat back to mooring, Portnoy said. He said he appreciated the work of the “four burly dudes” who rescued him, and that he might be finished with boating for a while.

“Captain Dave lives to tell another tale. Third time as captain, already lost at sea. It’s a dangerous game, the sea’s angry my friends,” Portnoy said via TikTok.

Portnoy, who maintains a robust online presence and has millions of followers, used  another social media channel, X,  to thank the Coast Guard on Monday. The Coast Guard responded with a message for Miss Peaches, Portnoy’s pit bull.

“Any time, Dave,” the Coast Guard posted, with a pair of smiling emoji. “Tell Miss Peaches we love her.”

Portnoy  founded Barstool Sports in 2003  in the Boston area. The sports and pop culture website has more than 16 million followers on Instagram .

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy rescued by Coast Guard after his boat goes adrift off Nantucket

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy was on a different kind of boat, a duck boat, during the Boston Celtics championship parade in June.

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy was rescued by the US Coast Guard Monday after his boat went adrift in the waters off Nantucket, officials said.

Portnoy’s approximately 28-foot vessel “broke free of its mooring in Nantucket Harbor and was drifting through the area,” according to Lieutenant Samantha Corcoran, a spokesperson for the Coast Guard.

Personnel from US Coast Guard Station Brant Point “diverted from training and towed the vessel to its mooring,” Corcoran said.

Portnoy posted a video of himself talking about the incident on X, formerly known as Twitter, and said it happened while he was taking his mother out for a boat ride. After he unmoored the boat, he tried to turn on the engine, but realized there was no power.

“No power, no radio, no anchor, no nothing,” Portnoy said in the video. “Heavy, heavy winds. Next thing you know, Captain Dave is lost at sea. Just blowing. Trying not to crash into ships in the harbor.”

Portnoy said he shot a flare gun into the air as a distress signal and yelled for help.

“Some girl in what I don’t know, looks like a rowboat, comes by Captain Dave, and I’m screaming, ‘Help! Captain Dave needs help!’” he said.

We almost lost Captain Dave to mother ocean today. Thank you to the #uscoastguard for saving Captain Dave's life. pic.twitter.com/hF5gYbmkSY — Dave Portnoy (@stoolpresidente) July 15, 2024

She climbed aboard Portnoy’s boat and radioed the Coast Guard for assistance.

Portnoy thanked the Coast Guard for getting him back to shore safely.

“We almost lost Captain Dave to mother ocean today,” Portnoy wrote on X. “Thank you to the #uscoastguard for saving Captain Dave’s life.”

The US Coast Guard responded to Portnoy’s post and gave a shout-out to Portnoy’s dog, Miss Peaches.

“You’re welcome, Dave,” Coast Guard officials wrote on X . “Tell Miss Peaches we said hi and remember to boat safe!”

Portnoy is a big fan of Nantucket, which he calls his “ favorite place on earth .” In 2016, he bought a $2 million home on the island, and has since traded up. He bought a waterfront estate on the island for $42 million last year.

I went from being able to afford renting for a day to a weekend to a week to a month to renting for the entire summer to buying a house to now buying a house beyond even my wildest imaginations. This is now my view. #DreamBig pic.twitter.com/Pt6XqCN7Hi — Dave Portnoy (@stoolpresidente) September 29, 2023

Coast Guard officials commended the Good Samaritan who helped Portnoy.

“We are glad that he used distressed signals and applaud the Good Samaritan for having a VHF radio ready to hail the Coast Guard,” Corcoran said in an email. “We advise the public to go out with various forms of communication, like a personal locator beacon and/or VHF radio, in case of an emergency. There is no such thing as being too prepared.”
