CLIENT REVIEWS

“ Absolutely love spending time at Bahia Mar Marina. The dock staff is great and the office staff is the best. Always helpful, attentive, and knowledgeable. Will be contacting Stephanie for another contract next season; my 12th season at Bahia! There is no better run marina on the East Coast. ” Jay Kaiser Fort Lauderdale, FL
“ In my 25+ years of boating I have been in and out of a lot of marinas, few if any of them will ever be as memorable as my experience here. I mostly work with Jeff, Andy, Devin, and Zack down on the docks. But Stephanie and her wonderful staff in the office are equally as amazing. Most marinas want to fill and bill ya, but here at Bahia Mar the staff remembers my name and truly makes me feel like a piece of their family. ” Larry Stroud Fort Lauderdale, FL
“ Loved our stay at Bahia Mar again. Very convenient place to tie up and in close proximity to everything needed. The marina facilities are always extremely well-maintained. Dockmaster Andy is a top notch professional and runs a very tight ship. His staff is courteous, responsive and efficient. Special thanks to Terry in the office. She is the best and will always brighten up your day! ” Matt Ploof Fort Lauderdale, FL
“ I have been keeping my yacht at Bahia Mar for 5 years and am always impressed with the quality of service and amenities. Stephanie Fot has made getting a contract incredibly easy and is always there to help with whatever I need. The Dockmaster Andy Schnell is a great friend of mine and is exactly the person you want to deal with for transient or seasonal dockage. Bahia Mar is an incredible place to keep your yacht and a must stay if you are in Fort Lauderdale. ” Kiran Ganguly Fort Lauderdale, FL

Boating Traditions: America’s 100 Oldest Yacht Clubs

The development of yacht clubs in the 1800s is an important chapter of our boating and marina history in the U.S.—and tells us much about the country’s early yearning for nature and community.

The birth of organized boating, rowing, and sail-racing clubs in our country took place in the 1800s and many of these early yacht clubs are still in operation today.

If you’re a sailor, oarsman, or boater, you’re probably familiar with many yacht clubs around the country—but do you know which U. S. yacht clubs have the pedigree to lay claim to being the country’s oldest?

The first time I heard the phrase yacht club was during a weekend at our family camp on a lake in the Northern Tier of New York State, just outside Adirondack Park. As a boy, most of my weekends there were spent fishing, swimming, and boating, and at the neighboring marina I heard sailing stories about the St. Regis Lake Yacht Club, founded in 1897. (Not on the list here, it’s the 156th oldest yacht club in America.) I was and still am a powerboater—learning boating back then in an aluminum boat with a 7 1/2-hp outboard—but I was fascinated by the sailing stories I heard dating back to the turn of the 20th Century in New York’s Franklin County.

At Dockwa, our loose definition of a yacht club is:

  • Usually membership-owned and controlled by a board;
  • Can be exclusive, but many no longer are;
  • Can specialize in many different types of activities such as sailing, racing, cruising, and kids’ programs;
  • They do not always have paid employees and might be volunteer-based.

Many yacht clubs nationally use Dockwa as their dockage reservation-and-booking platform or for marina management. So recently we had some fun office chatter—because we all work remotely, it was actually digital direct messaging office chatter—about which of the country’s yacht clubs have been around the longest.

Without further ado, and giving a shout-out to International Burgee Registry , here is the list of the 100 oldest yacht clubs in the United States, in chronological order of their founding from one to 100, with links to those still operating.

History of Yachting

History of the Yacht

By: American Sailing Sailing History

When does a boat become a yacht? One answer has always been, you can tell a yacht when you see one. But, It really has nothing to do with size of the boat, weight of the boat, its style, sleeping quarters, heads, tillers, or a wheel. A yacht is a boat that was designed for the express pleasure of its owner.

The yacht is an invention of the 14th century Dutch. The Dutch used small, fast boats for chasing smugglers, pirates and criminals. Rich ship owners and merchants began using these small “ jaghts ” to sail out to celebrate their returning merchant ships. It quickly became chic to use these “ jaghts ” to take friends out just for pleasure.

Mary / King Charles II

“ Mary ” was presented to King Charles II by the Dutch in 1660.

Charles II of England spent 10 years in exile in Holland before he was returned to the English throne in 1660. His return to the throne was celebrated by the city of Amsterdam, presenting him with a luxurious 60’ yacht including a crew of 20. Her name was Mary. He took great pleasure in sailing her up and down the Thames. He studied navigation and even naval architecture and he built approximately 20 yachts during his lifetime. It can be said that he was the world’s first yachtsman. His enthusiasm for yachting was contagious and his brother James, Duke of York, joined him and also became an avid yachtsman as well.

As always when there are two sailboats on the water a race ensues. Soon the first organized regatta was planned as a 40-mile race on the Thames. It took place in 1661 between Katherine , Charles’s newly constructed yacht and Anne , the Duke of York’s new yacht with Charles himself at the helm Katherine won and a new sport was born.

Yachting stayed the Sport of Kings for over a century, but by the 1800s yachting had grown to included participants of more than just the crown heads of Europe. The worlds wealthiest had joined in. Yacht Clubs were forming. The first yacht club in the world, called the Cork Water Club , was established in Ireland in 1720, followed the Lough Ree Yacht Club in 1770 (again in Ireland), and the Starcross Yacht Club in 1772 in England.

Cowes Castle. 1801.

Cowes Castle became the headquarters of the Royal Yacht Squadron around 1858.

Probably the most famous of all the English yacht clubs the The Royal Yacht Squadron was founded on June 1, 1815 in the Thatched House Tavern in St James’s, London as The Yacht Club by 42 gentlemen interested in yachting.

Across the pond the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) was started on July 30, 1844 when John Cox Stevens invited eight friends to his yacht Gimcrack , anchored in New York Harbor. They formed a syndicate to build a yacht with the intention of taking her to England and making some money competing in yachting regattas and match races. They choose to build a Pilot style Schooner to represent the club; at the time there was no faster design!

Pilot Schooners would lie at anchor in the inner harbor of New York City and wait for the behmoth square rigged Clippers carrying goods between America and Europe. The Pilot Boats purpose was to guide the huge square riggers that would appear at the entrance to New York Harbor’s Verazno Straights, to a berth in the City. The Schooners had to be fast to make a living. First one to the cargo ship got the job second got nothing.

The syndicate contracted with master schooner designer George Steers for a 101 ft (30.78 m) schooner which was christened America and launched on the 3 of May 1851. America crossed the Atlantic on her own bottom that year and challenged all of England’s fastest yachts to a match race. No yachts were willing to race her. Finally, America joined a free-for-all on Friday, August 22, around the Isle of Wight, racing against 15 yachts of the Royal Yacht Squadron in the club’s annual 53-nautical-mile (98 km) race around the Isle of Wight. Finishing 8 minutes ahead of its closest rival. America had won the Royal Yacht Squadron’s “ Hundred Guinea Cup “, later called the America’s Cup in honor of the yacht that won it.

The Yacht America

The Yacht America

Watching the race was Queen Victoria, who supposedly inquired, “ Which is first? ” Told it was America , she asked, “ Which is second? ” “ Ah, Your Majesty, there is no second, ” was the reply. Or so the story goes. The NYYC defended that trophy from 1870-1983. This has been described by journalists as “ the longest winning streak in sports “.

‘Nothing left’: After California Yacht Club fire, residents mourn loss of a beloved spot

Two firefighters injured fighting a massive overnight fire that destroyed

In an instant, an overnight seaside blaze engulfed decades’ worth of boating trophies, historical artifacts and cherished memorabilia at the California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey on Monday.

Fire crews attempted to control the blaze as heavy smoke and flames consumed the two-story building. By the time they had subdued the fire two hours later, only the skeletal remnants of the clubhouse were left standing.

John Myers, senior vice president of the club, said the blaze had been reported by an employee working late in the clubhouse Monday night. The fire spared the remainder of the facilities on the ground, including the docks and the yachts moored there. But the clubhouse, and particularly its second floor, was all but wiped out.

“We are working closely with the Los Angeles County Fire Department in their investigation of the cause of the incident and will share those findings when they become available to us,” Myers said.

The three towers that make up the Marina City Club

Members are left mourning, comparing the loss to the death of a loved one.

Jennifer Dakoske Koslu awoke in Rancho Mirage at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, before the sun had risen, to find her phone inundated with text messages from club members.

The first message she read simply stated, “The CYC is gone.”

“As soon as I opened my phone, it went to a link on the Citizen app and saw a video of the club burning. I was shocked,” Dakoske Koslu said.

For the last 24 years, Dakoske Koslu and her family have been dedicated members of the CYC, whose clubhouse is a few miles away from their home in Playa del Rey. She said it is where her children have grown up, familiarizing themselves with every inch.

“I remember taking my son there on the Fourth of July when he was just 3 weeks old. It was the first place we went with him as a newborn,” Dakoske Koslu said.

She and her husband biked to the club in the aftermath of the fire, greeted by the charred remains of the building on Wednesday afternoon.

“The destruction is unbelievable. It’s clear that the fire was burning intensely on the second floor,” Dakoske Koslu said. “There’s nothing left.”

The second floor once housed a collection of the club’s prestigious racing trophies, kept on display for members and visitors. The fire melted all but a single salvageable California Cup. Most notably, the priceless King of Spain Trophy, acquired in 1929 from King Alfonso XIII, was lost.

Additionally, the club lost cherished photographs of every past commodore, a significant position within a yacht club. Members said they didn’t know if anyone had digitized the images of the commodores or of the club’s founders.

“We would tell yachting stories at the bar around lots of memorabilia, and the yachting artifacts behind the bar are all gone now,” Tom Materna said. “The yacht club provided us a facility for the off-the-water celebrations after hard-fought competition on the water.”

Boats on the water with palm trees in the background

The CYC dates to the early 1920s, started by boat owners from the Los Angeles Athletic Club and other yacht clubs. The Board of Harbor Commissioners approved the first clubhouse in 1922, designed by famed architect Edwin Bergstrom, co-designer of the Pentagon.

In 1965, the yacht club submitted a proposal for an all-encompassing $1-million, two-story, 10,000-square-foot clubhouse on four acres off Admiralty Way. Members envisioned a state-of-the-art facility with 170 boat slips, a guest dock, a small boat hoist and a dry land storage facility for boats. The clubhouse that resulted was dedicated on June 10, 1967.

Then-Commodore William A. DeGroot Jr. told The Times that the triangular parcel of land on which the clubhouse still sits is a “perfectly logical place for a club facility, and a commanding view down the main channel of the marina.”

Though the building has historical significance to its members, it does not have a historic designation, according to Linda Dishman, president of the Los Angeles Conservancy.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and so grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and our members,” Myers said. “CYC has been a beacon for the nautical community for the past 101 years.”

Materna, 68, first found out about the fire through Facebook as friends posted videos and photos of the damage Tuesday morning. Then he began receiving calls and text messages from friends.

“Everybody woke up in the morning and realized we’d lost a significant part of the sailing community,” Materna said.

His connection to the club dates back nearly 52 years, to when he was just 16 years old. After spending 30 years sailing professionally with Hobie Cats, mainly racing catamarans — a watercraft with two parallel hulls of equal size — he recently served as a crew member on other club members’ racing yachts.

The CYC is pivotal in the boat racing community, organizing and hosting events such as the Optimist National Championship and Junior Olympic trials, Materna said. He fondly remembers the hundreds of people from across the globe converging on the marina for similar events.

The main topic among members now is what’s next for the club. Dakoske Koslu noted that the club’s ownership changed over the last few years, and many are unsure and concerned about the club’s continuation after the fire.

The club relocated to the marina in 1967, leasing the land it sits on from the county.

“I don’t think the county has really valued the contributions of the California Yacht Club as an important part of the Marina. They value Trader Joe’s because it’s more money for them,” Dakoske Koslu said.

Dakoske Koslu said she’s seen numerous small marine-oriented businesses displaced from the marina, making way for more commercialized developments such as Trader Joe’s and Recreational Equipment Inc.

Time is apparently running out for California's "Inverness Shipwreck," an old wooden boat that became an Instagram star as it rotted on a shoreline north of San Francisco in Inverness, California on April 23, 2024. Recent storms have made a shambles of the forlorn vessel named Point Reyes, which was already deteriorated from the over-attention of visitors to the Marin County coast, San Francisco Bay news media reported this week. "The National Park Service is aware that additional damage occurred to the vessel as a result of the most recent storms and tides," Point Reyes National Seashore officials said in a statement to the SFGATE news site. The boat was built in the 1940s and was used for transportation and fishing before it was abandoned years ago, aground near the community of Inverness on a section of the Tomales Bay shoreline that is part of the Point Reyes National Seashore. Danversport Marina

Celebrating 50 Years:

The DeLorenzo Family is proud to be celebrating 50 years of hosting weddings and events, and providing a home to boaters of the North Shore community.

Since 1970, Danversport’s breathtaking waterfront location has been the premier destination for everything from magnificent galas to intimate gatherings. Danversport Marina is recognized as one of the finest marinas on the eastern seaboard, and has grown from humble beginnings to a full-service marina. Let’s take a look back at some of the highlights these last 50 years have brought to our community and family.

Gazebo at Sunset

Where It All Began:

Before the Danversport Yacht Club existed, Joseph DeLorenzo made his living as a sheet metal fabricator. He began his career as an entrepreneur when he started his own metal fabrication company, Del-West, Inc.

where it all began

Joe had a dream of building a “big band” style dance hall and marina where community members could celebrate special moments with family and friends. The idea for the Danversport Yacht Club was born.

Joe and his wife Barbara purchased 19 stunning acres on a grassy peninsula surrounded by the Porter River in Danvers, Massachusetts.

Construction on the events building began in 1969. Joe was on a tight budget, and had to be resourceful when constructing his building. Twisted bricks (known as “clinkers”) are laid in with the regular, rectangular bricks. Joe collected these discarded bricks from his brother’s block and brick plant to add a charm to the building, and to save a few dollars!

The Grand Opening of the Danversport Yacht Club was held on December 6, 1970. Dancing, dining, and cocktails along the harbor were a huge draw to members of the surrounding community looking for a place to celebrate with family and friends.

Family members will tell you that Joe loved square dancing and having a great time with his friends. When the doors opened, Joe saw his dream envisioned with a large dance floor to accommodate his square dancing club called the “Shin Diggers.”

The Growing Years: In the 1980s, Danversport went through many additions, renovations, and tremendous growth.

What started as a young couple’s dream with a modest function room turned into a dream venue for brides and grooms, business functions, and special events. Even in the earliest days, the beautiful property offered both indoor and outdoor options along the river with access to the gazebo or pergola.

Passing The Torch To A New Generation: After many years of success, Joe and Barbara passed the torch to six siblings of the next generation.

Denison Family History

BROWARD MARINE: THE EARLY YEARS

Frank Denison, the founder of Broward Marine, started his yachting career by buying boats on spec, making the necessary repairs, and then reselling them. In fact, “Mr. D,” as he was known to everyone, is credited with installing the first diesel engines in a yacht in the mid 1930s, in Benton Harbor, Michigan.

In 1948, while on his honeymoon with his wife Gertrude, Frank bought the Fort Lauderdale shipyard Dooley’s Dry Dock, which had become a defense contractor during World War II building PT boats. Frank renamed the yard Broward Marine shortly after.

marina yachting wikipedia

BROWARD MARINE: MILITARY ERA

In 1954, and for the next four years during the Korean War, Frank Denison landed a large United States Navy contract, with the first flight of four 144′ wooden minesweepers, for the Royal Dutch Navy under a NATO contract.

Broward Marine subsequently added seven more AMS-class 173′ Minesweepers for the U.S. Navy. At the height of the Minesweeper program, Broward Marine became the largest private employer in Broward County, Florida.

After the demand for minesweepers dropped, thanks in large part to the conclusion of World War II, Broward Marine shifted its focus back to building custom yachts.

marina yachting wikipedia

BROWARD MARINE: PRIVATE YACHTS

The launch of Alisa V established Broward Marine’s position in the world of megayacht construction, and the vessels that followed were the start of a tradition of building wooden motoryachts based on the timber lamination techniques. Broward Marine began building some of the finest yachts for the world’s premiere yachtsmen, such as the Jonathan III  built for Harry Blum, the founder of Jim Beam Distilleries.

In those days, few yacht builders in the U.S. could consistently build quality boats over 50 feet. As he built the organization, Frank Denison challenged his customers and associates to “Demand the Finest,” as Broward’s slogan announced, while Gertrude started Yacht Interiors, which became famous in its own right for outstanding interiors for Broward Marine.

Mr. D and his design team developed hull designs that became known and respected for being sea-kindly and seaworthy, as well as efficient and beautiful. The Denison family was proud of the fact that no two Broward yachts were the same, and said: “If you build two boats the same, you haven’t learned anything.” That reputation for quality has endured for over 60 years.

marina yachting wikipedia

'60s & '70s

With the beginning of the 1960s came an increased interest from yacht owners in the quality of interiors and the need for interior design. To meet this demand, Broward Marine and Gertrude Denison established Yacht Interiors, which became one of the world’s first yacht interior designers. Some notable examples are Jonathan III of 1959, The Dorisam of 1963, and The Heather of 1965.

As the '60s came to an end, Frank Denison noticed a trend away from wood to other materials such as aluminum and fiberglass. Seizing on this trend, Broward moved quickly and adopted aluminum as its material of preference, even at the expense of abandoning two wooden vessels that it had under construction. By the mid '70s, Broward was in full production of an all-aluminum series of motoryachts.

Another first took place in 1973, when Broward Marine developed the first turbine-powered yacht, the 87’ Evon . In 1976, construction began in Saugatuck, Michigan on Broward’s Michigan boatbuilding operation. In 1978, the first Michigan-built Broward, Brownie’s II , was launched. Operating two boatbuilding facilities allowed Broward to complete between 6 and 8 vessels per year with as many as 10 to 12 vessels under construction at any one time.

marina yachting wikipedia

’80s & ’90s

Innovations in yachting continued rapidly in the 1980s, as Mrs. Denison designed the first-ever “country kitchen” galley, which remains an extremely popular feature on yachts today. Also, in 1983, Broward built the first ever yacht with triple diesel engines in the 92’ JERVET .

By the late 1980s, another Broward innovation was on the drawing board: the 112’ Britannia . Her triple Detroit diesel 16V92 engines with two outboard engines utilizing variable pitch Ulstein drives and the center engine, powering a Riva Calzoni jet drive, powered her ahead at an unthinkable 43 knots.

The early 1990s saw the commissioning of Britannia , then Pegasus , a 130’ triple engine tri-deck. By the early 1990s, Frank Denison was looking to go larger, and he accomplished this with the 1996 156’ Bubba Too . At the time  Bubba Too  was commissioned it was the largest U.S.-built aluminum vessel.

Broward continued through the '90s and into the millennium with vessels like the 1999 Cocoa Bean , the 2000  Aquasition , the 2001 London Lady , the 2002 Sigrun , the 2003 Lady Nancy , and up to the launch of the 2005 Soulmate .

marina yachting wikipedia

KIT DENISON

In 1971, Denison’s oldest son, Christopher (“Kit”) Denison , joined Broward and immediately started to build boats, first from wood, then, in 1973, in aluminum. The production started to increase from one or two boats per year to ten a year in 1983. During that time, Broward became known for modern styling, several new hulls were developed, and the workforce grew from 50 to over 250 employees, with annual revenues approaching $20 million.

In 1977, Broward started a new plant in Saugatuck, Michigan to take advantage of the experienced and talented workforce in that area. The Michigan facility became so efficient that it accounted for over 40% of all the Browards built after 1978.

In 1983, Kit left Broward to start Denison Marine, which became known for the largest number of high-speed (30-knot plus) yachts over 100 feet, with the development of new, tank-tested hulls and modern designs by Joe Langlois with innovative drive systems, such as jet and surface drives, which changed the face of the yachting industry. Equally innovative production techniques were developed by Carl Bischoff at the modern Dania Beach facility with Ann Denison in charge of creative interior and space planning.

marina yachting wikipedia

SKIP DENISON

In 1975, Denison’s second son and his namesake, Franklin A. (“Skip”) Denison, took the reins of the shipyard’s service and repair business and grew the revenues from under $1 million to over $5 million in 1985, making a substantial profit for the company. In 1986, Skip left the family boat business to start his own company, Skipper’s Oil.

In 2008, Skip returned to his first love, yachting, when he joined the yacht brokerage business at Tower Marine in Saugatuck, where he was the top salesman. Skip later joined Downeast Yachting and was responsible for selling new Sabre Yachts and Back Coves in West Palm Beach, Florida  and Michigan.

Skip joined Denison Yacht Sales in 2012, specializing in the sale of superyachts over 80', Downeast style yachts, express cruisers, center consoles, sportfish, and of course, brokerage Browards.

marina yachting wikipedia

KEN DENISON

In 1983, Kenelm (“Ken”) Denison, the youngest Denison son, started working at Broward. Ken started to make his own contribution to the company’s legacy with some additional new designs and a series of well-known advertising programs, including “It Must Be a Broward!” Ken started the perennial Broward Rendezvous and built some of the best-known yachts in Broward’s long history.

Den Daves

In the late '90s, Ken started his own yacht brokerage business, Denison & Daves, which sold fine megayachts all over the world, until joining Denison Yacht Sales in 2016.

BOB DENISON

Bob Denison , born and raised in Fort Lauderdale, spent much of his childhood around the Broward Marine and Denison Marine shipyards with his brothers Chris and Eddy. Bob has experienced nearly every level of the yachting experience, from working as a laborer at the yard to helping with boat shows.

After graduating from the University of Miami, Bob worked with two visionary entrepreneurs in e-commerce and aerospace. These experiences helped shape Bob's knowledge of internet marketing and creative management strategies.

In 2002, Bob took the helm at Denison Yacht Sales. Since then, the firm has grown steadily, including new offices and new boat representation, with the support of his father and uncles and Denison’s more than 100 yacht brokers.

Bob's approach is simple: Focus on supporting your brokers, rather than competing with them. In 2005, Bob stopped wearing the hat of yacht salesman and started focusing on marketing and management. The fruit of this philosophy is represented by the excellent and diverse group of dedicated yacht brokers currently serving clients at Denison.

marina yachting wikipedia

EDDY DENISON

Eddy is the son of Kit Denison. From an early age, Eddy spent summers working at Denison Marine, sweeping the stock room with brother Bob, helping out around the yard doing any odd jobs that paid enough to hit the snack machines.

Eddy attended Arizona State University and the University of Miami, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in History and a minor in Secondary Education. After college, he attended the San Diego Golf Academy in Chandler, Arizona. Five years into his golf career, a freak sneezing incident ruptured 3 discs in his back, sidelining him indefinitely from teaching or playing golf.

Eddy then opened a dance studio with his wife and spent the next six years running it. He joined Denison in 2013 . Eddy hopes to continue the Denison tradition in the yachting industry and pass along his knowledge to his children.

Yacht Club, which continues Saturday, is the first major rock and pop festival on Harriet Island since Live Nation’s River’s Edge Music Festival in 2012. Despite promising St. Paul a five-year commitment, the concert promoting giant lost enough money to convince them to pull out after a single year.

Live Nation owns 51% of Yacht Club organizers C3 Presents, an Austin, Texas, company that’s also behind Austin City Limits Music Festival, Voodoo Music + Arts Experience and the modern-day Lollapalooza. But Live Nation apparently allows C3 to follow its own path.

Some concertgoers complained about food and drink prices, and long lines, but in terms of getting in and around the site, the infrastructure and general vibe, C3’s experience in mounting festivals became quite clear by late Friday afternoon, when Joan Jett and the Blackhearts played an hourlong set to a large, grinning and dancing crowd. (Organizers did not release an attendance number, but have said they expect more than 30,000 people each of the two days.)

On Thursday, Yacht Club’s social media announced reunited Southern rockers the Black Crowes had pulled out of their planned set at 8 p.m. Friday due to “illness in the band.” (The Crowes, however, did not address their absence online.) Rather than drafting an 11th hour replacement, the festival reworked the schedule and gave several acts more time on stage. Local band Durry got pushed nearly two hours later into the schedule for a set that started at 5:40, while Seattle indie folk act the Head and the Heart graduated to the Black Crowes’ planned 8 p.m. slot.

Local favorites Gully Boys opened the festival at 1 p.m. on the main stage followed by fellow homegrown act Harbor and Home on the smaller stage. From that point on, performances alternated between the two stages, with just minutes between bands.

Sets from buzzy country artist Morgan Wade and indie rockers Michigander paved the way for Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, who earned cheers for their famous covers “Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah),” “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll,” “Crimson and Clover” and “Everyday People” as well as band originals “I Hate Myself for Loving You” and “Bad Reputation.” They also covered the Replacements’ “Androgynous,” with Jett giving a shout out to the late Minneapolis band and their leader Paul Westerberg.

St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter took the stage prior to Gwen Stefani’s performance and asked the crowd to applaud the police and other city workers who helped make the festival happen. He also suggested it would return for a second year in 2025.

Stefani — who was promoted as a headliner along with Friday’s final act Alanis Morissette and Saturday’s main attraction the Red Hot Chili Peppers — performed with dancers and video at what sounded like a louder volume than the previous bands. She told the audience her brother-in-law is from Minnesota, so that sort of makes her a local. She then pulled out her husband, former “The Voice” coach Blake Shelton, to sing their current single “Purple Irises.”

It’s been some 18 years since her last substantial solo hit, but Stefani has remained in the spotlight thanks to her high-profile husband and the semi-regular duet singles they’ve released over the last eight years. Stefani and her band No Doubt reunited in April to headline Coachella to much acclaim, but have yet to announce any future plans together. Whatever happens, Friday’s crowd — which was heavy on geriatric millennials and Gen Xers with a smattering of boomers — gave Stefani a warm reception that matched the ideal summertime weather that graced the festival on Friday.
