Fact Check: The Story Behind Video of 7.000 Fireworks Going Off at Same Time in San Diego

A video shows 7,000 fireworks accidentally going off at the same time in San Diego, California, on July 4, 2012.

July 4 weekend often has many fireworks and pyrotechnics, but one 2012 display went off the rails and is still an internet punchline a decade later. A video went viral on July 4, 2022, reminding us of the time that 7,000 fireworks were accidentally set off in San Diego, California, in 2012. The video was also reposted on July 4, 2023. 

This video was originally shared by Dan Roy on July 7, 2012, on YouTube, and appears to show one angle of the accidental display from that day.

While Snopes has covered Fourth of July embarrassments before, this one is a real misfire.

According to a report from the The San Diego Union Tribune , the fireworks went off when the show's producers, Garden State Fireworks, "experienced a computer glitch that caused 7,000 fireworks to go off in roughly 30 seconds." The fireworks display used to be known as the Big Bay Boom, but after the event, news outlets referred to it as the Big Bay Boom Bust of 2012. 

Thrillist reported an oral history of the event in 2015, and spoke to Dan Roy, the man behind the video about what he experienced when it was taken. He said :

It was my first time seeing the fireworks in San Diego. Traffic was really backed up downtown. There were a couple hundred people on the grass with blankets and coolers, kind of tailgating it. I decided at the last minute to run down to my car and grab my camera. [...] We could see the barge right close to where we were. There was no countdown. I had my back turned to make sure the lighting settings were right on the camera, and that's when I heard the explosion.  [...] Somehow people were not running away. People were cheering really loudly at the end. They were looking at each other like, That was amazing! I can't even imagine what's happening next. [...] Everybody was in shock and waiting for something else. All this debris started raining down on our heads; it looked like burned-up toilet paper rolls. It was gross and weird. That was one confirmation that something was wrong. The other confirmation was that the barges just slunk away without a word.

He also discussed the aftermath of uploading the video:

I knew I had a good video but I didn't think I was the only person who had a nice DSLR camera. I posted it on the San Diego subreddit and then someone reposted it to videos and it went to No. 1. That's when it really hit. [...] I got a phone call from a TV station in Japan that wanted to show it. I got an email from Rock Center with Brian Williams. And somebody from CNN called. I made $3,000 for just pointing a camera in the right direction at the right time, which was nice considering it was totally an accident.

The Thrillist report also shared his original video. His video was reposted in the Chicago Tribune and the official Big Bay Boom website. The latter website even included a video of the unplanned fiasco from another angle, showing more than one display going off:

Sandy Purdon, the sponsor and producer of the event, even saw the video and invited Roy to his event the next year, according to Roy: "Sandy Purdon found out who I was and invited me to come film the fireworks at his place the next year. The party was packed. He was definitely nervous." 

But according to Purdon , Garden State returned the next year, gave them a free event, and did a "great job." 

Given that numerous media outlets and the organizers of the display picked up his recording, and he has spoken about it at length, we rate this claim as "True."

San Diego International Boat Show continues to expand superyacht display

Entry-level cruisers, motorcrafts, personal watercraft and sailboats will also be available at summer kickoff event.

SAN DIEGO ― The official start of boating season in San Diego is the weekend between Memorial Day and Father’s Day, as local boat lovers will be walking the docks at one of the region’s largest boat shows, June 7-10.

The 15th annual San Diego International Boat Show, produced by Duncan McIntosh Co., returns to Harbor Island’s Spanish Landing Park (East), with four days of fun on the water for families and boating enthusiasts alike.

More than 150 boats will be on display at Spanish Landing Park (East), including an expanded selection of 80-foot yachts (and larger) making their West Coast debuts. Also featured at this year’s show will be the latest in nautical gear, gadgets and accessories.

There will also be a variety of non-boating activities at this year’s event, such as face painting, a latex twist artist and several food trucks. Live entertainment will be available, as well as Fiddler’s Green Floating Tiki Bar.

A few yachts will be making West Coast debuts at this year’s San Diego International Boat Show. What follows is a quick sneak peek of what to expect at Spanish Landing Park (East).

Absolute 50 Fly

Making its West Coast debut at this year’s San Diego International Boat Show is the Absolute 50 Fly. The 50 Fly accommodates seven adults and features a Volvo Penta 2xD6-IPS600 system boating high performance and low fuel consumption. Her cruising speed is 22 knots. Visit the SeaNet Yachts space to view the Absolute 50 Fly.

Beneteau Oceanis 51.1

South Coast Yachts will debut the new Beneteau Oceanis 51.1 at this year’s San Diego International Boat Show. Also debuting at the South Coast Yachts display are the Beneteau GT50 Sport Fly, Wellcraft Center Consoles and Four Winns Runabouts.

Maritimo M51 and M54

Compass Point Yachts will display the 2017 Maritimo M51 and 2019 Maritimo M54 at the San Diego International Boat Show. The M54 comes equipped with joystick docking, a “Quick Gyro” stabilization system, walk-around side decks and an enlarged cockpit.

The M51, meanwhile, come with aft bi-fold doors, internal staircase to the enclosed flybridge, walk-around decks, full-beam master and a third cabin to starboard. Also equipped on the M51 are a joystick docking system and a cockpit with an electronically operated hatch.

Maritimo yachts are crafted in Australia and inspired by offshore racing. Stop by the Compass Point Yachts’ display to experience the Maritimo Yacht, renowned for performance, practicality and engineering excellence

Cruising Yachts

Making their respective West Coast debuts will be the Jeanneau 440 and Jeanneau 490. Both yachts will join the Cruising Yachts featured lineup of the 2018 Jeanneau 58, 2018, Jeanneau 519, 2018 Jeanneau 44 Deck Salon, 2017 Jeanneau 54, Bali 4.0 Sailing Catamaran and 2018 Elan Impression 45.

Viking 37 Billfish

Stan Miller Yachts is bringing the 2018 Viking 37 Billfish – fresh off its debut at the Newport Boat Show in April – to the San Diego International Boat Show. The Viking 27 Billfish comes equipped with twin Cummins QSB6.7 550-horsepower diesel engines and a spacious cockpit. The 2018 Sabre 42 Salon Express will also be featured at the Stan Miller Yachts display.

Big Bay Yachts , meanwhile, will be displaying a 38-foot Blackfin for fishing enthusiasts. Chuck Hovey Yachts will present a 106-foot Horizon and 110-foot Akhir-Cantieri di Pisa.

A wide variety of cruising, family and fishing boats will be featured or highlighted by Crow’s Nest (such as the 84-foot Delta Tatu ).

Denison Yachting will showcase the 2018 Fountaine Pajot 40 catamaran and a 1990 Sharp Design yacht fisher (78-footer) at the San Diego International Boat Show.

Boat show goers might also want to check out the 2018 Intrepid 410 Evolution, which is powered by triple Yamaha 350s and features a queen pedestal bed, dinette, galley and head with stall shower. Visit Hampton Yacht Group ’s space if you want view the Intrepid 410 Evolution.

Also on display will be the 115-foot luxury yacht Ocean Pearl , which will be at the Northrop & Johnson space.

Alexander Marine , as usual, will represent its Ocean Alexander, Pursuit, Regal, Azimut, Galeon, and Aquila vessels at the San Diego International Boat Show.

Silver Seas , meanwhile, will be on hand at the boat show to highlight Cruisers Yachts, Princess Yachts, Tiara Yachts and, in certain markets, Maritimo Yachts.

San Diego International Boat Show’s hours are 11:15 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. on June 7 and 8; 9:15 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. on June 9; and, 9:15 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. on June 10.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 off for those with military identification. Children 12 and younger are free with a paid adult.

The San Diego International Boat Show (SDIBS) 2024 is held at Safe Harbor Sunroad, featuring both on-water and on-land exhibitions. The Port of San Diego Big Bay Boom July 4th Fireworks Show is back, promising another spectacular display over San Diego Bay. Fireworks will be discharged simultaneously from barges placed strategically around the Bay off Shelter Island, Harbor Island, Embarcadero North, Marina District and Coronado Ferry Landing. This non-competitive community bike ride is for riders of all abilities and will take you on a scenic, and primarily flat ride, around the San Diego Bay via the Bayshore Bikeway. Along the way, riders will travel through the surrounding cities of Coronado, Imperial Beach, Chula Vista, and National City before finishing back at the start/finish line at Embarcadero Marina Park in downtown San Diego.
