You can either join a scheduled day trip, or hire your own private wherry (with skipper and crew included) for a day, a few days, or a week.

The boats can sleep up to 10 people in comfortable berths and also have showers and a galley (kitchen).

Their surprisingly spacious and refined interior décor reflects a sophisticated era - most of the wherries even have a piano below deck!

They are ideal for a special birthday, a memorable celebration or a stand-out event.

Nothing can quite prepare you for the experience of seeing these boats 'in the flesh'.

Once a vital part of local heritage stretching back to the 17th Century, there are now only eight Wherries left in existence on the Norfolk Broads.  Wherry Yacht Charter Charitable Trust is responsible for maintaining and restoring five of these.

Your money (either via bookings, donations or by joining our ‘Friends’ scheme) helps us to ensure that these priceless museum pieces are not lost forever.

Ardea is a truly magnificent Pleasure Wherry and always turns heads as we sail by. Built in 1927, she is one of the newest boats in our fleet but has a fascinating history.  At 65 ft long there is plenty of deck to relax on and her elegant wood-panelled interior features a saloon, large galley and a stateroom.

An introduction to this site

I am born and bred on the Norfolk Broads, and for most of my life I have had the pleasure of sailing here on everything from the smallest dinghy (admittedly about 15 stones ago) up to each of the remaining wherries. I was for 20 years Managing Director of The Norfolk Broads Yachting Co, one of the oldest names in Broads Yachting and I am privileged to have worked alongside some of the most skilled tradesmen to be found. In that time I have, along with many others with a like interest, amassed much information on the place where we live and take our pleasure.

This web-portal is not by any means the authoritative reference on the Norfolk Broads nor anything approaching it, there are many that know a lot more than me and may have far more interesting material to impart, but this is simply my contribution as an information point for those that are looking for more on this, one of the finest inland waterways in the world.

Much of my interest surrounds the yester-year of the Broads, and particularly the history of yacht racing that took root here over 200 years ago and flourishes to this day. I am sometimes able to provide information on old sailing craft, via an extensive archive, including one of the only complete collections of Lloyds Yacht Registers still in existence, with every published volume from 1878 through to 1980.

Included for your interest, are galleries of quite atmospheric black and white photographs from days gone by, along with more recent pictures and links to other sites. The site is very much work in progress, there will be further additions over time but for the moment, I hope you enjoy our modest contribution.

Norfolk Broads Boat Hire

Providing something for everyone, a Norfolk Broads boating holiday promises to delight children and adults alike. Renowned for its natural beauty as well as its fine range of visitor attractions, the Norfolk Broads abounds with incredible waterside restaurants, traditional English pubs and remarkable nature trails. One of the UK’s 15 national parks, the wildlife and landscapes of the Norfolk Broads are expertly protected to ensure they maintain their year round beauty.

Stretching from Beccles in the south to Dilham in the north, there’s over 125 miles of navigable waterways to explore. From the quaint village of Wroxham to the bustling city of Norwich, the variety of destinations to visit means there’s something to please all tastes. Indeed, some visitors will fall in love with the boating centre of Stalham whilst others will be at home in the charming market town of Beccles.

There’s plenty of activities for everyone to get involved in, too. There’s tigers to be visited at Thrigby Hall Wildlife Gardens, magical days out to be had at BeWILDerwood in Horning, and scenic walks to be taken just about everywhere along the waterside. There’s also a nature reserve at Surlingham which provides guests the opportunity to learn about the way that the Broads were formed as a by-product of peat digging during the medieval period.

Naturally, those hiring a boat on the Norfolk Broads are able to experience and sample all of these places and activities at their own pace and in a way that suits them best.

When it comes to exploring the Broads, there’s boats of all shapes and sizes to consider. Obviously, we like to think our fleet of modern cruisers are amongst the best available! Easy to handle, and requiring no previous boating experience, our team makes sure that every guest is confident when setting out on their Norfolk Broads boat hire. Inclusive of unlimited wifi, a damage waiver, free car parking and your first tank of fuel we will ensure your UK holiday starts, the moment you reach our boatyard in Wroxham. Equipped with all of the comforts necessary to cruise in style, our boats provide guests with outstanding accommodation and boast a performance that makes them ideal vessels for experiencing the Broads. 

Certain boats in our fleet have notable additions that set them apart from the crowd. Some, like the Fair Prince, for example, have a raised steering position that makes it possible to steer the boat whilst being out in the open. Others, like the Fair Princess, have a split sliding canopy to allow those on board to feel even more connected to the water and their surroundings.

Our collection of premier cruisers which include boats like the the Fair Marquess and Fair Jubilee benefit from alfresco dining areas and exterior lounges that make them great choices for families and couples who like to spend the majority of their holidays outside. Certain boats in this collection also feature whirlpool baths, flatscreen televisions, and separate interior dining areas. Ultimately, they allow boaters to discover the Broads whilst indulging in a few luxuries whilst cruising from one place to another.

It’s also important to point out that some of our boats are unable to pass beneath Potter Heigham bridge due to their height. Again, we encourage anyone setting out to enjoy a Norfolk Broads boat hire to identify if this is the case before placing a booking.

New for 2021, all of our boating holidays now include the following;

Full tank of fuel.   Your holiday cruiser will be provided with a full tank of fuel upon collection.

Damage waiver.  Sometimes mishaps occur. With our damage waiver you can relax knowing should you be involved in an accident you wont incur additional costs. For further information please refer to our terms and conditions.

Free unlimited wifi.  Whilst the Norfolk Broads offers the perfect place to disconnect, we k now that is not always possible. We offer free unlimited wifi onboard, to ensure you can stay in touch when you need to.

Free outdoor parking.  Our free car parking means you can start your holiday relaxed, rather than struggling to find a car parking space.   

Providing there isn’t a sign stating otherwise, boaters are welcome to moor anywhere on the Norfolk Broads. Providing, of course, that they do so sensibly. Whilst many areas are free to moor in, it’s important to note that some places do charge for this service and it’s the responsibility of anyone hiring a boat to ensure that all necessary fees are paid. In the case of the yacht stations at Norwich and Great Yarmouth, for example, there is a charge to stop and make use of their facilities.

In some cases, waterside restaurants will refund any mooring fees upon the purchase of a meal. Similarly, all hire boatyards which are members of the Broads Hire Boat Federation will allow visiting cruisers to moor for free at certain periods.

Convenient and often free mooring options ultimately make boat hire on the Norfolk Broads much more enjoyable as it’s possible for visitors to easily get around and spend as much time as they like at their preferred destinations.

Our boating holidays on the Broads are great for four legged friends, too! Welcomed on board along with their humans, they’re welcome to cruise the Broads in style. We’re also committed to ensuring that everyone stays safe out on the water, which is why we’re happy to loan out dog life jackets in exchange for a small refundable deposit.

It’s not just our team that welcomes our furry friends on the Broads. Indeed, many of the walking trails around the waterways accommodate dogs. From walks on Wherryman’s Way by the River Yare to the grounds around Burgh Castle, it’s possible for dogs to come along and enjoy a holiday with their owners.

There’s also various pubs and attractions that are dog-friendly and make for great places to visit during a Norfolk Broads holiday. These include:

If you are an experienced Half-Decker sailor then sailing a Rebel is a real treat and perfect for camping on the river under the stars or mooring outside of your holiday cottage.

All of our half deckers can travel under bridges by lowering the mast. The masts on our Rebels are quite heavy and we recommend it is only attempted after full instruction from our team at the yard.  Please get in touch for advice if you’re planning on heading through any bridges on your holiday.

Frequently asked questions

We don’t ask for formal qualifications but expect you to have sailed recently as the skipper in charge.  Good dinghy helmsmen have no difficulty sailing our boats but experienced seas-sailors can find Broads sailing a bit different at first.

Our boats are provided with a quant (a type of punt pole) and instruction is given on its use.  We have a programme to fit electric flooding propeller motors to the cabin yachts and a number have already been fitted.  These motors are not designed for sustained motoring but just to use in awkward situations, like getting off a leashore, mooring and bridges.  Our day-boats are supplied with either oars or paddles.

Yes, and currents and tidal flows do affect sailing, particularly in light winds.  Tide tables are provided on the boats or on the ‘Aweigh’ app.  The tides do affect the clearance at some bridges too.  The tidal range in most of the rivers and broads is normally less than 10cm.

Each cabin yacht has two drawers under each bunk (capable of holding the contents of a reasonable sized suitcase) and further storage beside the bunk.  Storage space for suitcases/bags is limited so it’s best to unpack and leave bags in your car.  There are two large drawers in the well for food storage and bulky items can be stored in the forepeak.

Our boats have no power supply for refrigerators.  A good quality cold box will keep food cold for up to three days and we (and other boatyards) have the facility to re-freeze freezer blocks.

Our trustees (coming soon), it was truly a delight to fulfil an ambition held for over 60 years since first i saw a hunter’s yacht sailing  although we have hired half deckers a few times it was a yacht i really wanted to sail. it was a delight in every way, despite the weather. the boat was so well turned out and it all “worked”, clearly maintained with great care. what a fine bunch of ‘lads’ you must have.

We love the opportunity to get to know our customers while helping them to select their next treasured boat and it’s great to hear about their many adventures onboard the boats they purchased from our boat brokerage team. View just a few of the stories we’ve collected here.

Customers buying their boat from NYA are invited to join the NYA fuel club for £300 inc vat. Membership lasts for 5 years. Members are issued with an electronic fob which will allow them to get fuel from our pump at highly reduced rates, 24 hours a day. 7 days a week.

Our Diesel station is installed at Freshwater Harbour. The ‘state of the art’ Pumptronics pump is computer linked to our office for billing and draws from a 10,000 litre storage tank.

It is assumed that the split of 60/40 for propulsion and domestic use is the accepted standard at the pump.
