The Kittiwake, derived from the earlier South Coast 23, was built by Kenner Boat Co. for South Coast Sea Craft. In about 1965, South Coast took the molds and moved to a different location. A hull was left behind which Kenner cut up, enlarged by a few inches, and re-faired to make molds for the Kittiwake. Sometime around 1970, the factory was sold to a conglomerate named AJ Industries which continued to produce Kittiwakes under the Kenner name.

In 1973, Ray Greene & Co. of Toledo, bought the molds and built an unknown number of Kittiwakes until it ceased operation. Later, River City Sailcraft obtained one or more molds and built an unknown number of Kittiwakes. In 1978 the plant reportedly burned, and the molds were destroyed.

This Kenner Kittiwake is in very good condition and presents herself well. Jubilee has been well maintained and has new sails and a new outboard. See what all the excitement is about!

About the kittiwake 23  .

The Kittiwake 23 is a recreational keelboat, built predominantly of hand-laid fiberglass, with marine mahogany bulkheads and teak trim. It has a masthead sloop rig; a spooned, raked stem; a raised counter, angled transom, a keel-mounted rudder controlled by a tiller and a fixed long keel. It displaces 3,700 lb (1,678 kg) and carries 1,500 lb (680 kg) of lead ballast. The boat has a draft of 2.83 ft (0.86 m) with the standard keel. The boat is normally fitted with a small 3 to 6 hp (2 to 4 kW) well-mounted outboard motor for docking and maneuvering. The design has sleeping accommodation for four people, with a double "V"-berth in the bow cabin and two straight settee berths in the main cabin. The galley is located just aft of the forward cabin. The head is located in the bow cabin, under the "V"-berth. Cabin headroom is 54 in (137 cm). The design has a PHRF racing average handicap of 270 and a hull speed of 5.6 kn (10.4 km/h).

Kenner Kittiwake 24 (23?)

  • Add to quote

Hey Folks, I've found for sale a "Kenner Kittiwake 24", with trailer and outboard motor, at what seems like a reasonable price: https://maine.craigslist.org/boa/5765980092.html I tried looking up more information about that design, since the owner/poster didn't provide a lot of details, but Google only ever finds info on a Kittiwake 23 . Since I don't know much about boats (yet), maybe more knowledgable folks can help me out here: Are these the same designs? (I see from Sailboatdata that the K23's LOA is 23.58 feet, but it also says the K23 wasn't commenced until 1972, while the listed boat is 1969.) Does anyone with experience on such a boat have any insights to offer as to its general quality/performance/enjoyment fact? What would be the thoughts on such a boat as a daysailer / weekender with a couple of short overnight trips each year? - Walker

Jeff_H

The Kenner Kittiwake was an adaptation of the South Coast 23, a Carl Alberg design from the mid-1960's. Sailboat data has a good write up on this KITTIWAKE 23 sailboat specifications and details on sailboatdata.com . The biggest difference between the Kenner Kittiwake and the South Coast was that the Kittiwake had a doghouse (a raised portion of the cabin top) added and a miniaturized interior plan that was meant to sleep 4, but 4 very small people. It looked great in pictures, until you saw it in real life. Things like a miniature galley sink only work for miniature pots and pans making dinner for people with miniature appetites. But cramped accommodations aside, these were nice boats for their day. I normally recommend something more responsive for a first boat, but the Kittiwake should seem familiar if you have been sailing Ensigns. I thought that the Kittiwake seemed to handle light air, and handle a chop slightly better than the Ensign, but those are many decades old recollections and may not be accurate. My sense is that the first Kittiwakes appeared around 1969 or so, around the time that I moved to Florida, I saw one in New York. I don't recall hearing the Kenner name associated with the name Kittiwake until slightly later which may be the 1972 reference you are seeing. Jeff

The Kittiwake 23 is a full-keel sailing sloop designed by Carl Alberg and built by the Kenner Boat Company of Knoxville, Arkansas. The is similar to the much-loved Alberg 22 built near Toronto, but much bigger. Those 18 inches really make a difference! She sleeps four down below, and features a spacious cockpit for day sailing. We have actually slept in the cockpit on pleasant evenings a number of times.

Gusto at PEYC in Picton, Summer 2013.

We bought this sailboat almost two years ago as an experiment to see if we would enjoy sailing. When we bought her in Ottawa in 2012, she had been out of the water for several years. Her sails had barely ever been used since they were purchased in 2007! And she was sitting on a virtually brand new cradle. She had (and still has) an excellent long-shaft 5hp 2-stroke Mariner outboard that sits in a motor well behind the cockpit and hadn't seen much use.

Gusto right before launch into the Ottawa river, summer 2013. Note the motor well.

Last summer we outtfitted her and cruised her for two weeks from Ottawa to Toronto via the Rideau Canal and Lake Ontario. The boat performed excellently in a variety of conditions, and posted some surprising distances (Trenton to Toronto in one day!) for such a small pocket cruiser. In fact, we beat a 43’ trawler through the canal! We have enjoyed it far beyond our expectations, but have outgrown our beloved Kittiwake and moved up to a larger boat. That's why we have reluctantly decided to sell her.

Gusto on the Rideau Canal with her mast down, summer 2013.

We’ve done a lot of work to the boat in the two years we’ve owned her and taken care of most of the problems we’ve encountered, and while we’ve decided to part with her for what we paid (CDN$2500), we are what are known as ‘ motivated sellers ’. If you’re interested in getting into a classic pocket yacht designed by one of the 20th century’s foremost designers, this is a great opportunity for you.

V-berth on Gusto. Surprisingly comfortable and roomy for a 23 foot boat!.

We don’t want to get into a long, drawn-out selling process. We’re moving up to a larger boat because our family has grown and we want more room for active young kids. This is a great pocket-yacht, strong and capable. We've always felt good daysailing her around Toronto and the trip home from Ottawa was a comfortable and fun adventure. If you think you might be interested in this boat, get in touch. Let's see what we can work out.

Two aft quarterberths on Gusto, and electrical panel.

This Kenner Kittiwake is in below average overall condition for her age, as she has a slightly soft fore deck and some deck leaks port and starboard side amidships that appear to be from lifeline stanchions. Tara appears to have a good paint job on the bottom, but there is a heavy build up of paint. The starboard side of the topsides of the hull is in good condition, but the port side has some minor surface abrasions. The cockpit grate looks very nice. The sails are all 40+ years old, with the main needing some stitching. The outboard motor is a 2004 Johnson 8 two stroke. This is the second owner for 30 years. Tara has great potential for a refit and could end up being a beautiful boat!

1965 Kittywake 23 This KittyWake 23 is located in RI. The KITTIWAKE derived from the earlier SOUTH COAST 23, built by Kenner Boat Co for South Coast Sea Craft. In about 1965 South Coast took the molds and moved to a different location. A hull was left behind which Kenner cut up, enlarged by a few inches, and re-faired to make molds for the KITTIWAKE. Right now, this KittyWake has been sitting idle for over 14 years and was part of an estate sale. She had been Awlgripped and looks like she's never been sailed since. She looks like the owner had planned on a complete restoration and never managed to complete it. There's a new compass (never used) new vang (never used), new wiring and electrical panel. She comes with 2 masts representing both the tall and standard rig. The tall rig is brand new as you will see from the turnbuckles and the shrouds. There are 4 sails that come with it. 2 jibs, main and spinnaker. As a HUGE plus there's a really top notch 2005 Tri-ad single axle trailer that's worth about as much as the owner is asking for everything. For the sailor that is looking to spend a little time and energy scrubbing, waxing, sanding, painting and varnishing, you can have a classic sailboat that can provide years of fun for the family, and I'm guessing she'd do well on the round the buoys circuit too. There's no motor with this boat.

hello all I am looking for anyone who has owned, owns, or has experience with a kittiwake sailboat... a friend pointed me onto this really great deal.... I am buying a kittiwake sailboat.... very few of these boats were ever made, so I am trying to find someone who can give me information on them... I did find out they were produced in Kentucky for about 5 years... I know carl alberg designed them... I know they are full keel boats like the cape dory... I am looking for information on sailing characturistics for this boat... thanks sincerely Jess

The guy that runs our marina has a 24', don't know the year but I've been out on it and it is a solid boat. It handled some stiff wind and chop really well. Sorry I can't be more specific about it's true nature but I was extremely impressed with its character. It appears to be a very quick boat as we covered some ground in a short period of time. Best part is it came with a trailer and can go anywhere. Steve

I believe that the Southcoast 23 has the same hull as the Kittiwake. My brother had a Southcoast 23 and I have sailed with him. I'll ask him to post some information. I didn't think that it was a particularly fast boat with a PHRF rating at about 270. Considering the waterline length it was respectable for the times. There were two characteristics that stick in my head. Finding an outboard motor that would fit in the well and not hit the rudder was a challenge. He must have tried at least 3 motors before he found one that fit. There was a lot of weather helm because of the design of the attached rudder. Unlike most modern day rudders which are a balanced spade design, the rudders on these boats are not balanced and by design will have a heavy feel to the helm. I love the classic lines of these Alberg designed boat. Very easy on the eyes! Check out information on the old Southcoast 23's too. (Not the newer ones which are a completely different design)

hello all thanks for the replies... I made a deal with the owner of the kittiwake 24 sailboat.... I pick it up next week while I am on vacation... it does have those wine glass lines carl alberg is famous for.... here are some pictures of the boat... sincerely Jess

hello all I got the kittiwake 24... I pick it up next week while I am on vacation... I am excited about it... while doing some research on the boat, I found some pictures of a subtender/rescue ship of the US Navy (USS Kittiwake)... it was decomishioned and then sunk in the caymens to be part of a dive park... I was telling my friend about it, and he suggested, later sometime I should take my boat and sail to the caymens and go see the dive park... he laughed when he said it... then commented that a kittiwake visiting the kittiwake... he got a good laugh out of it, but I thought it is a good idea... sincerely Jess

Congrats Jess! Very cool traditional boat and dont worry about that rudder design, it's been around a lot longer than fiberglass anf works well. Unlike many, that is a boat that can be balanced.

hello all thank you for all the information about the kittiwake sailboat... I found out it is hull #214, originally built by the Kenner Boat Company... it is larger than the south coast 23 with a different layout inside... this kittiwake sailboat is the only model of sailboat ever produced by the Kenner Boat Company after the split from the south coast boat company... the Kenner Boat Company only produced 268 of this model of sailboat... then it was taken over by the Ray Greene Sailboat Company, who only produced 60 .... then it was bought out by the River City Sailcraft company, who only produced 69 of them... I know I will enjoy sailing my new sailboat... I am not looking to race her in all the races... I am more into sailing her for the pleasure of it, and spending time out on the water with my wife... as my son puts is, I have a camper on the water, and front row seats to fishing or swimming anytime I want it... my favorite things are camping, sailing, fishing, swimming... and I can do all with this kittiwake sailboat... sincerely Jess

  • Description

Seller's Description

Owner began project, but cannot complete. Already soda-blasted hull. New teak for batter-boards available ($400 cost). All sails available. Available in Southern Maryland for salvage cost.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
