Select your rating Overall rating BEFORE YOU SELL OR BUY A BOAT READ THIS!!! DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE YOU LIST OR BUY!!! Read at the bottom slimy sales tactics that cost a seller or buyer dearly. BEFORE YOU LIST OR BUY: find the best 3 surveyors or highly reputable Marine mechanics. That is hard to do as well. There's probably only 1 in any given area that works for the client, not the broker. You can find one in another area and ask them for a referral. Kells Surveyor (the Uncle or owner is apparently the best in San Diego) They know who the excellent trustworthy Boat agents and brokers are. I like to check my intuition and I was spot on about Doug. ABOUT "DOUG VILLEPIQUE WITH YACHT FINDERS-Windseekers San Diego" I don't write a review unless absolutely above and beyond service. Have you ever felt you needed to take a shower after meeting a boat broker? Not only will you feel fresh after working with Doug Villepique at Yacht Finders-Windseakers, but you will also feel like you just came out of the spa. He sells like a Doctor, more concerned for the client. In every business, there are 2% that stand out among the others. DOUG STANDS OUT!!!! If you are selling your boat, get her down to San Diego. He's the type of agent you want even if it takes you a month to get your boat to him! Doug Villepique * fights for his clients on both ends (A TRUE PROFESSIONAL)! * Returns calls, texts, and emails faster than any broker I have ever worked with. Sorry, that doesn't say much. His response time is usually less than an hour unless he's on a sea trial or with a client to which he let me know in advance. * Represented his listing in the highest light. NO BS, no smoke blowing * He produces trust. * He was the first agent I felt good on every turn. * Doug may be young but he's an old salty, with far more experience than one could most agents in the business, single-handed across oceans on a tiny boat, repaired in the worst conditions, he loves the sea! * When I found something, Doug wouldn't do the common line, this is an old boat what do you expect trying to make me feel bad for asking? He had several ways to repair before replacing and acted like an encouraging mentor. DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE YOU SELL OR BUY!!! SLIMEY SALES x - Dock fees and repairs is a way listing agents make $$$. 1 agent complained I left 12 voicemails before returning my call. I left 1 per week for 3 months. I saw a Hans 44, wanted to offer, and was told they'd let me next week after repairs. 5 calls later, for a 1.5 months, I finally hired a buyer's agent to call, no returns, I gave up. She still sits costing the seller. Apparently, he makes more on dock fees and repairs. (he has a rep from agents) (SF Bay) x - OOOH look at this drawer, or cooler or shiny BBQ! Seriously? What about the hole in the boat? (SD broker) x - Recommends a bad surveyor to miss very important details. (SD broker) yes beware of surveyors. x - The commissions are small so it is common to represent both sides, but one lied to me and was playing me against another buyer. (long beach broker) (broker hadn't even looked at his listing for 3 months, new nothing about the boat, and it was in the same marina.) I heard from a sd broker his reputation precedes him. Some agents won't work with him. So you lose potential buyers. x - wanted to make an offer, broker didn't return calls. Boat sold 3 weeks later. SF x- JUST MAKE SURE YOU RESEARCH YOUR SELLING BROKER AND BUYING BROKER. Ask surveyors or mechanics with excellent reputations. They know the good ones and slimy ones. Doug and broker yacht finders has a very good reputation for integrity. x - as a realtor broker, the California government will close a brokerage, sue, and arrest if needed, licenses revoked. Boat brokers seemingly can get away with a lot before a license is removed. And when I say a lot, I mean way too much. It takes other brokers not the buyer or seller to remove a broker's license. x - tell you what you want to hear your boat is worth, just to get the listing. Boats are rarely going to sell for what we sellers think they are worth and usually about 20% what we have put into them. Figure out how long you wish to take to sell your boat and what market you are in. A good broker is honest and a bad broker will tell you what you want to hear. While I have sold boats for more than I paid and cost to fix, that is rare. I sold one boat for a profit, but one market was offered 50% more but I wasn't ready to sell. When I was I, I had to price according to the market. I know one owner who absolutely won't drop his price. His 44 foot boat hasn't sold for 13 years. A sitting boat is bad for the boat. I would highly recommend using Yacht Finders as your yacht broker. Clark Hardy was our broker on our recent purchase of a beautiful C&C 37/40. Clark's boat knowledge is incredible and very helpful and was a great comfort in helping us choose the right boat for us. He was very patient with our questions and very available and willing to assist us throughout the entire process. Thank you Clark! Darren and Nicolette My wife and I bought our first boat from Yacht Finders. We worked with Doug and helped us through the whole process and made sure that due diligence was done. I have bought and sold real-estate but there are some nuances to buying and selling a boat that Doug made sure were handled properly. I also felt that Doug had a solid team behind him that made the process smooth and quick. Doug was also always available for questions at any time and made sure that as first time boat buyers we got answers. As I sit here in my salon of my little 29' Hunter, I am thinking of something I recently heard from someone here at the Marina who said, "You don't really find a boat, it finds you", and after going through this process with Doug to bring our new love into our life, I truly believe that. We have never had as good as a yacht salesman as Clark Hardy for as long as we have been buying and selling pleasure boats (about 20 years and 8 different power/sail-boats). He goes above and beyond what is necessary and expected from a yacht salesman. It was by chance that we met Clark; My husband and I were on a vacation driving to San Diego and we decided to check out some boats while we were in town. Jasper made a call to Yachtfinders/Windseakers and lucky for us, Clark picked up the phone. We chatted about what we were looking for and I emailed him a list of possibilities. The next day when we met him, he was prepared and ready for us. He had done his research and due diligence. We went over the list and discussed what's available and the status of each boat. He made all the arrangements necessary for us to see the boats on our list. He also made additional searches to see if there were other boats available in the market that fit our criteria based on the preliminary list. He had a well-organized plan for us to see boats in such a short notice. Boat Buying is a very intricate and complicated process, even more complicated than buying a house and there are not enough broker/salesman that are competent to navigate boat buyers through the process. Clark is more than qualified and competent. He helped us find the right fit or close to perfect fit. It is very difficult to find the perfect boat but you can get pretty close without a huge compromise. During the boat search, Clark provided knowledgeable input and suggestions for issues that were brought up and how to overcome them. Clark was also flexible and accommodated us to see a boat 100+ mile from San Diego. When I stepped aboard Flocerfida ex Emerald Isle, I knew she was the perfect boat for me and my family. I just had a strong connection with her and she was yelling, "Take me sailing, take me around the world!" However, the biggest hurdle that I had to overcome was committing to restoring her exterior teak and the teak deck. I remember asking Clark, "Would I rather marry someone so beautiful that I have to take care of or someone mediocre that would take care of me?" Clark took the initiative to contact someone to give me an estimate as to how much it would cost to restore her teak. He gave me options as to what I can do in the future if and when I would need to replace her teak deck. He gave me choices and left me to make the decision. During the negotiations, he helped us work through an offer and counteroffer that we felt protected our interests and at the same time, get us what we want. During the Sea Trial, I was amazed at how Clark handled the vessel with ease. The seller hired a captain to perform the sea trial but I can tell that he was not experienced at handling a vessel like her. Clark then took charge of the process made sure that all the tests were completed to ensure her seaworthiness and performance. The way he managed the vessel reflected his experience with various boats which increased my confidence with his abilities. During the Survey, Clark made sure that we did not miss a thing. Although it's the boat surveyor's job to be thorough and precise, Clark was there to be a secondary check. After the survey, Clark communicated all our questions to the seller so we can be informed. In completing and preparing the documents, Clark was very timely, quick to respond, and thorough. There were several communications and multiple threads during the process. To add to the complicated process of buying a boat, the sale of the boat was contingent on the sale of our residence in Las Vegas. There were several issues that came up but Clark handled it methodically and thoroughly. I was a spaz most of the time because of the unintended obstacles but Clark made the whole process very smooth. After the sale, Clark assisted us in setting up the repairs that are needed based on the surveyor's recommendations. We brought her to the Shelter Island Boat Yard and while she was hauled out, Clark kept us updated and informed as to what work is being done and completed. He was our eyes and ears at the boatyard while we were at home in Las Vegas. He even went out of his way to find us a fabricator for a bobstay chain plate that needed to be replaced. Even long after the sale, Clark is making sure that all loose ends are tied up. We came across an issue with regards to the vessel's Mexican Temporary Importation Permit (MTIP). MTIP is a necessary document in order to bring a vessel into Mexico. However, she has an existing MTIP that is lost. We need to cancel the existing MTIP but it is impossible to cancel the MTIP without the actual physical paper. We cannot take her to Mexico without the risk of seizure. To date, Clark is still exploring and researching all avenues in order for us to be able to cancel the MTIP. I give Clark high recommendation. He did an outstanding job guiding me through the process. It was a pleasure working with Clark! Last summer I said goodbye to my beautiful mistress, Frangipani, and gave her away to a new owner who re-fit her, gave her a scenic truck tour to Florida and a new home in Barcelona Spain. A 38 Ft Hans Christian, she sold quickly, and the entire affair was coordinated by Ron Gullan of Yachtfinders/Windseakers in Point Loma. Along with Clark Hardy, and the staff at Yachtfinders, the entire transfer process was streamlined, quick. The last voyage of Frangi to finalize the sale and turn her over to a new owner was the culmination of an easy, happy process.
