Arthur Piver

Arthur Piver played a large role in the growth in popularity of the cruising trimaran through his various marine plywood designs aimed at the amateur builder using lumberyard and hardware store materials. He launched his first trimaran, the 16 ft (4.9 m) FROLIC, in 1958. His best known designs include the NUGGET 25, NIMBLE 30, LODESTAR 35 and VICTRESS 40. Piver created an entire industry of the amateur built trimaran during the 1960’s with ads that appeared in ‘Popular Mechanics’ and other publications. Thousands of Piver designed trimarans have been built around the world by amateurs and professionals alike. Additionally, Piver conducted extensive research in this field and published four books: ‘Trans-Atlantic Trimaran’, ‘Trans-Pacific Trimaran’, ‘Trimaran Third Book’, and ‘Navigation by Simulous’. Adding validity to his yacht designs, Piver crossed the Atlantic twice and the Pacific once in boats of his design. In 1968, Piver disappeared off the California coast while testing a new trimaran. A collection of his drawings is available at the Mariner’s Museum, Newport News, VA, USA.

Let’s do a celestial problem. In 1968 all the participants knew their celestial. They all used it to find their way around the world, and Tetley was spot on when he passed south of Cape Horn. He wanted to pass about five miles south of the Cape. We are at a DR of 56° 02’ S by 67° 17’ W sailing in an easterly direction. The height of eye is 10 feet and the sextant error is 2’ on the arc. There is no watch error. The sun shot is the upper limb and is taken in the a.m. before meridian passage at 11:50:10 GMT. The Hs at the time of the shot is 11° 20.8’. The day in question is March 18. We will use the 2007 Nautical Almanac . To find his distance off Cape Horn, Tetley takes an early morning sun sight. The resulting LOP will give him distance off — with any luck.

A: What is the Ho?

B: What is the intercept?

The position of Cape Horn is at 56° S by 67° 17’ W. If you plot the sight, which I recommend, you will see how spot on Tetley was in his navigation.

A: Ho is 10° 55’

In this problem we have Nigel Tetley, passing Cape Horn, on the way into the south Atlantic . In order to make certain that he has enough room to maneuver, Tetley wants to clear the Cape by at least 5 nm. In order to guarantee his success, Tetley decides to take an early morning shot of the sun, as it is rising, but far enough above the horizon so that he can get an accurate shot without too much refraction. Accordingly, he waits until there is a break in the clouds and at 11hours 50 minutes 10 seconds GMT he gets a upper limb shot of the sun. He knows, as do all practitioners of the art of celestial navigation, that the LOP of the sight is perpendicular to the azimuth, so he knows that by taking a shot where the azimuth bears east that he will get an LOP that will be in a northerly direction. Since he wants to be south of Cape Horn , what he actually doing is finding his distance off by shooting an early morning sun sight. The facts are as follows: We are at a DR of 56° 02’ S by 67° 17’ W. Height of Eye is 10 feet and the sextant error is 2’ ON. The Hs at the time of the shot is 11° 20.8’, and the day is March 18. What is the Ho?

To find the Ho we have to reduce the Hs-standard operating procedure in any and all celestial sights. What we are doing is correcting the sight for refraction, semi-diameter and parallax, in other words we are putting ourselves in the exact center of the celestial sphere and not on the surface of the earth, fortunately we can achieve this mathematically.

Ha       11° 15.7’

The only things to pay careful attention to here is the fact that the Index Correction is On the arc so that means it has to be subtracted (remember when you’re on, you’re off?) and the fact that are working with an Upper Limb sight so the corrections are subtracted instead of added as in a Lower limb sight. I personally prefer to take lower limb sights but it is good practice to shot both limbs in order to be comfortable with the procedure. This comes in handy when shooting the moon.

  To find the intercept we have to find the LHA of the sun and then enter into the sight reduction tables – in this instance vol.3 HO 249:

GHA at 11 hours 342° 57.4’

50 min 10 sec           12° 32.5’

GHA                        355° 29.9’

-Ass Long                   67° 29.9’

LHA                          288°

While we are poking around in the NA lets get the declination of the sun at the time of the sight. Dec is S 1° 00.4’ with d of 1.0’ which converts to 0.8’. Now we can tell by inspection of the declination tables that the declination is decreasing so the 0.8’ is subtracted from the dec. thus:

Dec.    S 1° 00.4’

Dec S 0° 59.6’

Now we enter HO 249 Vol 3 to page of 56° latitude (this is our assumed latitude) and we go to tables where declination is 0-14° Same name as latitude. We find the following under 0° declination and 288° LHA

Hc 9° 57’      d+51        Z105°

We go to Table 5 for corrected minutes of declination which in this case is 60’. I got that from the declination for 59.6’. The table 5 correction is added to the Hc as indicated in the tables

Intercept is 7 nm Toward. Remember HO MO TOW, which is to say that when the HO is greater than the Hc the Intercept is moved toward the direction of the celestial object. By the way also notice that at the bottom of the page in the sight reduction table it states that if in the southern hemisphere and if LHA is greater than 180° that Zn =180-Z thus the true bearing of the sun at the time of the sight is actually 180°-105° = 75°

For further edification and delight you all should plot this sight. Tetley was damned good!

The Piver Victress Trimaran Ketch was well built by Karkus Craft. Powered by Vetus 4-cylinder diesel, aided by Norm Cross Mini-keel, she moves right along. The oiled mahogany provides a serene interior, along with 12 opening screened portlights and 7 hatches for cross ventilation. The amas have four Hollywood berths atwartship, a tremendous amount of storage around and underneath. The aft stateroom is private having family and friends aboard a comfortable experience. The pilothouse has helm seat for wheel steering, electronics mounted overhead, on shelf or wall, overhead hatch to view sails, the heart of activity while underway. Engine access is underneath while engine controls are within easy reach. The deck area has several hatches for ventilation, storage of anchor rode, sails, propane vented locker and lines. A large Bimini provides shade from tropical sun, so bring out the chairs and enjoy the cool breeze. The boom is kept off center on a crutch. The aft stern rail is home to st. Croix OB lifting crane, solar panels and BBQ. St. Croix SS davits hold the Force 4 hard bottom dinghy. This vessel and its equipment has been well thought out for comfort, safety, easy of operation. The photos are very representative of the condition of interiors, exteriors and equipment. Owners document all inventory by location, an amazing list of spares, replacements, kits and much more. Professionally maintained in the summer, the comment is always how dry the interior remains.

Corinthian Trimarans

Here is the history on Corinthian Yachts Inc. This is the first fiberglass production Multihull Design built in the U.S. They started building this design in 1965. The last one built was in 1993, total number built 28, ours is hull number 12. All the boats built were custom "interior" builds, each one for a specific individual, the exteriors are the same but the interiors vary from boat to boat. Prior to 1965 if a U.S. citizen wanted a fiberglass production multihull he had to order it out of Europe. The boats available were the Iroquois, Chieftain, and Apache from SAILCRAFT of England designed by Rod McAlpine-Downey and the other choice was the Telstar 26 and 8M designed and built by Tony Smith, Performance Cruising Inc. Later Smith moved to the U.S. and built the long line of Gemini catamarans and as well as the Telstar 28. All the European boats listed above were being imported by Symon's Sailing, Inc of New York, who was marketing these fiberglass production multihulls nationwide. Eventually Symon's believed there was a demand and a market for a larger multihull. They could save the shipping fees if they were built in the U.S.A. Symon's went through several designers and eventually asked Ted Irwin to complete the design on this larger multihull; Ted Irwin Irwin Yachts the well respected Florida designer. Over 6000 of his monohull designs have been built, his most popular being a 43' Center Cockpit, that is still coveted today. This is only multihull design he ever put into production. He was a "hands on designer" and had the boat built in Florida by the boat building company Corinthian Yachts Builders Inc in Tarpon Springs. The design was named the Corinthian 41, that is how it got its name and the story behind the design. The similarity between the layout and the design by Ted Irwin and Arthur Piver's Victress 40 design is rather remarkable. What is uniquely different is the asymmetrical design of the amas on the Corinthian 41 as compared to Piver's Victress 40 design which are V shaped amas. The main hull on the Corinthian 41 is a symmetrical round shape - this is possible with fiberglass, not possible with a plywood build of Piver's design which is also V shaped. Asymmetrical hulls became a popular hull design for the Hobie Cat and similar boats in the 80's, it was first developed by multihull designer Rudy Choy in the 60's, I think Choy put them on his designs in 1963. Irwin thought enough of this asymmetrical hull design that he used this "new concept of the time" on the amas. This improved the boats pointing ability as compared to the Victress 40. Prior to this time there were no fiberglass production multihulls built in the U.S. Piver, Cross, Brown, Wharram, etc… sold plans for U.S. citizens to build their own boats and in the 60' and 70's the plywood multihull building craze was in full force here in the U.S. One interesting caveat to the design is that it is rumored, according to the Corinthian Yacht company's owner's son, Irwin consulted with Charlie Morgan, Morgan Yachts, on this multihull design. Through another source I learned that at the same time Irwin consulted with Morgan, Arthur Piver was working for Morgan. Corinthian Yacht Builders Inc was sold after 1995 and now builds powered multihulls and barges. Still building at the same site in Tarpon Springs, FL known as Corinthian Catamarans, LLC LOA 41' LWL 38.5' BOA 24.5' SA 771 sqft Disp 14000lbs Draft 35" Mast Ht Above waterline 46' Center Cockpit Ketch Rigged Perkins 104/50Hp cruises power 7 kts, pushed 8.5kts Fuel 100 Gals Water 100 Gals One full head, one partial

    I sail a 40ft Piver Victress out of the Toronto Multihull Club. Structurally the boat is in great condition, just needs some TLC. Finding the cockpit small and designed for offshore use, I have considered cutting open the aft cabin roof and transforming it into an open seating area. Was going to extend the existing cockpit roof all the way back to the transom.
