Hanse 588 Review

  • By Herb McCormick
  • Updated: January 9, 2019

hanse 588 yacht

To my eye, perhaps the cleanest-looking yacht to be introduced in 2018 was the Hanse 588, the second-largest offering from the German builder in a line that now encompasses a range of boats from 31 to 69 feet. Look, I enjoy a clipper bow and sweeping sheer line as much as any traditionalist, but lately I’ve derived as much optical pleasure from the lines of all-business performance cruisers like the 588. Perhaps it’s because function follows form, and a yacht like this — with features that include a straight bow and stern, ample topsides, wide beam, maximum waterline, minimalist deck jewelry and razor-sharp sheer — is nothing if not a flat-out sailing machine. You can just see it.

And then there’s this: At first glimpse, it looks rather simple. But on closer inspection, it’s anything but. And I also find broad appeal in that dichotomy. But make no mistake: For all of its ultramodern Euro styling, this is a well-constructed, systems-rich, state-of-the-art vessel, with a host of elements that will make sailing and cruising safer, and more efficient and fun.

Let’s start with the sail plan and rig, a triple-spreader Seldén aluminum spar with no traveler and a self-tending jib. Straightforward, right? Well, not so fast. The mainsheet is actually a German-style setup that’s double ended and led aft, port and starboard, to cockpit winches adjacent to the helmsman. The main itself on the boat

I sailed is a powerful, fully battened number stashed on an optimal in-boom FurlerBoom furler. The aforementioned jib is unwound from a Furlex manually controlled furling unit, and the code zero genoa riding shotgun in the twin headsail configuration is set off a Reckmann electric furler. All sails are built using composite-laminate sailcloth by Elvström. In other words, like everything else, they’re high tech.

There are twin wheels, each led to the quadrant independently of each other. Stashed below the cockpit, accessed via the transom’s drop-down boarding gate/swim platform when lowered, is a Williams jet-drive tender (I am not making this up), which answers the always intriguing dinghy question (both the type and its storage) in a major way. There are thrusters in the bow and the stern, both retractable, very handy items when pivoting or docking a boat this big. Are you recognizing a recurring theme here? With the Hanse 588, on multiple levels, what you don’t see is what you get.

Owners cabin

A raised bulwark rims and accentuates the flush deck, which can be specified as real teak (an option) or synthetic teak, with a choice of eight different finishes. On our test boat, the sight lines from the dual helms were fabulous, thanks largely to the low coachroof and the absence of a dodger or Bimini. (A fiberglass “T-top” hardtop that covers the cockpit is optional, as is the sort of windscreen seen on many Scandinavian cruising boats.) There are six windows on each side of the hull; the company says it used the largest ones possible that do not compromise structural integrity. The windows serve dual purposes, emitting plenty of light into the interior and offering great views while breaking up the expansive hull from a visual perspective.

The boat is well put together, with balsa core employed in the topsides of the hull and deck in a laminate rich in polyester resin and coated with vinylester as a hedge against osmosis (the layup is solid glass below the waterline). The chainplates are reinforced with carbon in high-load areas, and the vacuum-bagged bulkheads are cored for a combination of lightness and strength before they are tabbed into the deck, floors and hull. The iron keel (there are three different sizes and drafts available, ranging from a shallow L-shaped model that draws 7 feet 5 inches to a deep, T-shaped version drawing 9 feet 4 inches) is anchored to keel plates embedded in the integrated floor grid.

Down below, there are literally dozens of choices to make with regard to upholstery colors and fabrics, carpeting, and woods for flooring and furniture, which gives owners an incredible amount of leeway to personalize the interior to their own liking. Our test boat’s furnishings were finished in cherry, which was quite pleasing. Likewise, with the floor plan, there are multiple layouts for accommodations from which to choose. The boat we inspected had the single spacious owners cabin forward, with an island berth and a single roomy head (this space can also be two cabins and two heads); a crew’s quarters in the bow (which can also be a gargantuan sail locker); and a big head to port at the foot of the companionway (this can also be a workroom or another sleeping cabin). There were also twin double cabins aft with en-suite heads. The central saloon of our test boat featured large settees to port and starboard, with the U-shaped galley also to starboard. A straight-line galley with an incorporated central island is also available.

main saloon

Alas, the day of our sea trials on Chesapeake Bay last fall, in conjunction with the 2018 Boat of the Year contest, dawned absolutely windless, and we were unable to conduct a test sail. But the boat performed more than admirably under power, registering better than 9 knots at 2,150 rpm. And, in terms of decibel level, it was one of the fleet’s quietest boats, a fact that was not lost on BOTY judge Ed Sherman.

“One of the factors that I have always used to help me sort out a very broad-based quality issue is how noisy the boat is when you’re motoring along,” Sherman said. “All that’s indicative of all these parts — doors that don’t fit right, floorboards that move — that can induce harmonics that go through the whole boat when you’re under power. And here, we have a boat that’s right down there with the highest quality and most expensive yachts in terms of the noise level down below. I guarantee that’s a derivative of the efforts that have been taken in designing and executing all the assembled components in the interior. For Hanse, the tolerances are getting tighter. Whatever they’re doing, it’s really working.”

Yes, Mr. Sherman. It certainly is.

Boat Review: Hanse 588

hanse 588 yacht

By Charles J. Doane - Sail Magazine

Originally published March 13, 2018

This new full-size performance cruiser from Hanse replaces the successful Hanse 575, and includes updates and improvements developed with the help of input from active owners. With an extremely malleable interior (encompassing 72 possible variations) and a vast array of color, fabric and trim options, this is one mass-production boat of which it can honestly be said there are no two alike. The boat’s layout flexibility, thoughtful improvements, enhanced finish quality, fine sailing performance and aggressive price point all helped earn it a 2018  SAIL  Best Boats award in the Flagship Monohull category.

Design & Construction

The hull is a balsa-cored fiberglass sandwich laminate set in polyester resin with its exterior layer set in vinylester for improved osmosis resistance. Areas around the chainplates are reinforced with carbon fiber, and interior bulkheads are vacuum-bagged composite structures that are fully tabbed into the hull. The cast-iron keel (of which there are three variations) is bolted into large metal backing plates bedded into the bottom of the hull with epoxy resin and surrounded by a robust structural floor grid. The single rudder is cored fiberglass with an aluminum stock and frame.

Our test boat, which featured a striking purple hull, had an exceptionally clean deck, with no dodger or other cockpit shelter other than a foldaway bimini top. However, a carbon hard-top over the cockpit—Hanse calls it a T-Top—with a retractable canvas panel and an optional windscreen can be ordered if desired. The cockpit features twin Carbonautica wheels with independent Lewmar steering systems. Forward of these is a pair of twin cockpit tables either side of a central walkway, providing straight-line access from the companionway to the hydraulically controlled fold-down transom. Beneath the cockpit is a dinghy garage, remodeled from the 575 so as to accommodate a broader range of tenders.

Cockpit ergonomics are good. All lines run aft from the mast belowdeck to rope clutches and Lewmar winches set within easy reach of both helm stations. High cockpit coamings provide comfortable seating for guests relaxing in front of the helms out of the way of working crew.

Moving forward the deck is enclosed by a high bulwark that really frames the boat visually and offers great security in rougher conditions. The fact that there are no scuppers means all the water coming on deck will be routed aft, which saves the topsides from streaking. For added security, there is also a well-positioned grabrail along the sides of the coach roof, a welcome sight in this age of naked foredecks. All the way forward is a segregated sail locker that can also be configured as crew quarters.

Accommodations

Compared to the 575, the 588 boasts a more open saloon with larger hull portlights and improved finish quality. There is a total of 20 deck hatches, which let in scads of outside light, but will also pose something of a chore when closing up the boat for a squall. The overall effect, as is common now on Euro boats, is of a bright, open, luxury loft.

Our test boat had a fairly conventional layout, with a very large owner’s stateroom forward (fully soundproofed with a gasket on the door), a U-shaped galley to starboard, a U-shaped dinette to port opposite a short banquette seat and twin mirror-image cabins aft with full double berths. The aft cabins also had ensuite heads with separate shower stalls, and boasted lots of natural light and ventilation, as well as an abundance of headroom and vertical clearance over the berths.

As mentioned, there are many different ways to configure the interior. The forward stateroom, for example, can be split into two smaller staterooms, and there is a choice between a U-shaped galley or a walk-through galley with an island. A separate passage cabin or utility space can also be added, and the aft berths can be pointed in different directions. The list goes on...

We sailed the boat in moderate but changeable conditions off Oyster Bay on Long Island Sound, with the true wind blowing 12-16 knots. Our test boat came equipped with an anodized aluminum Seldén rig, a full-batten Elvstrøm FCL mainsail stowed in an in-boom Furlerboom system and a twin-headsail setup forward, with an Elvstrøm Code 0-type genoa controlled by a Reckmann electric furler at the stemhead. Just aft of that was a self-tacking Elvstrøm FCL jib on a manually controlled Seldén Furlex furler.

Our boat also came with the most shoal of the three keel options and a slightly truncated rudder, so I was surprised at how close to the wind we could sail. In the 13 knots of true wind, flying the full main and Solent jib, we comfortably pinched as high as 30 degrees off the apparent wind while maintaining boat speeds up to 7.5 knots. Cracking off a bit to a 42-degree apparent wind angle, the number on the knot meter swelled as high as 9 knots.

My two hosts, Peter McKenzie and Tom Bobbin from Hanse dealer McMichael Yachts, insisted we were a bit slow, as the hull was foul. However, I had to question this as we cracked off a bit more to a 55-degree close-reaching angle and still saw our speed surge repeatedly to 9.9 knots. Sailing even further off the wind I was equally impressed at how much speed we carried on a broad reach with only the Solent jib flying forward of the mainsail. Speeds at a fat 130-degree angle ranged from 7.8 knots to 8.2 knots. Even after we rolled up the jib, we still made a maximum of 6.8 knots under the main alone.

Through all this, we negotiated several gusts and quick wind shifts. Playing the main with vang and sheet adjustments while sailing on the wind was a simple matter, and we had no trouble keeping the boat on its feet. The helm, I found, has some weight to it, but the overall feel at all angles was very good. The wheel does need some attention, but this is well rewarded. Once focused, I found it easy to find a groove and stay in it. I also had no trouble steering through the gusts and shifts.

Under Power

Our test boat came equipped with a 110hp Volvo diesel engine (a larger 150hp power plant is also available) turning a standard three-blade Flexofold prop via a conventional shaft drive. For close-quarters maneuvering, we also had a pair of optional Quick thrusters, bow and stern, at our disposal.

I was immediately impressed with how quiet the engine was. The engine compartment, which is compact but easily accessed on three sides, is well insulated. On deck, it takes a careful ear to hear the thrum of the diesel below. Down below, even in the aft cabins directly alongside the engine bay, the sound is not at all intrusive.

Again, I had to wonder just how foul the hull could be. Heading out into the sound against 15 knots of true wind and some small chop, with the engine turning a lazy 1,920 rpm, we maintained an easy 7.5 knots of boatspeed. Turning later onto a more neutral heading in flat water with the wind on our beam we made 9.4 knots at 2,150 rpm. At maximum throttle, with the engine turning 2,740 rpm, we made 10.2 knots.

Backing down I found it took a couple of seconds for the prop to turn around and bite in the other direction. Once moving, however, the boat was easy to control. Moving forward with the helm all the way down, the boat turned easily within one boatlength.

Hanse_588_Sail_Plan_Conventional_Coloured_20170515

Hanse was the first mass-production builder to move into the big-boat market in a big way, and it is maintaining a prominent position in this segment with the introduction of the 588. Owners have so many choices, they can easily make their boat unique to them. Couple that with fine sailing capability and a friendly price tag, and the 588 becomes a boat that demands attention.

In addition to his time at BEYC, Glynn’s resume includes years as an Associate Editor (and Contributing Editor) for Sailing World magazine, where he was part of the team that created both the “Boat of the Year” awards and the NOOD Regattas. Over the years he has raced aboard C&C 40s, New York 36s, J/35s, Express 37s and Farr 40s, as well as his own J/30 and Soverel 33 Grey Seal. He boats with his family out of Captain Harbor in Greenwich, CT.

“John brings a wealth of experience as a racer, boat owner and industry professional,” said Michael Beers, McMichael Sales Manager. “He will be a fantastic resource for his clients in buying and selling boats. We’re proud to have him on our team, and his background will help us continue to fulfill our motto, ‘Experience Counts!’”

“I’ve been fortunate enough to spend my career in and around the sailing and boating community, enabling me to love the various jobs I’ve held,” said Glynn. “In joining McMichael Yacht Brokers I’ve found another fresh, new outlet from which to apply my knowledge of and passion for yachting. Moreover, I’m able to do that while working in the company of some of the finest yacht brokers in the business. It is my hope to bring to my brokerage customers a sense of confidence and satisfaction as they make yacht transactions, both from the buyer’s and seller’s sides.”

Cameron Campbell Cameron has been boating his entire life, starting as a toddler on Great South Bay on Long Island. He grew up in Connecticut and spent every summer on Long Island Sound. In college he was a member of the University of Rhode Island Sailing Team and also ran operations at the URI Waterfront Center. After college he was an ASA Sailing Instructor at the New York Sailing School on City Island and then for Olympic Circle Sailing on San Francisco Bay. He participated in many regattas on both coasts in both small and large boats. He owned a Sabre for many years which he cruised from Annapolis to Maine. Cameron also has experience with power boats ranging from center consoles though larger cruisers.

Cameron has been working with clients preparing for Bermuda races, extensive blue water cruising, and many that are new to boating.

Rick Fleig Rick grew up on Long Island spending many years sailing on the Sound in everything from J/22′s to J/105′s, Custom C&C 41′s and many other boats, competing in all the major Northeast events. This experience and passion for sailing led him on a path to sail in the 1987 America’s Cup in Perth, Australia with both the Courageous and USA Syndicates. He has sailed in many major international regattas, including the Swan World Championships in Sardinia, the World 6 Meter Championships in Portofino, Italy, and several Newport Bermuda races.

Rick combines his extensive sailing background with both the marine and sports industry, having worked as a regional sales manager at SunfishLaser and Vanguard Sailboats, and prior to that as a regional sales representative with sporting goods giant Nike. He believes that building relationships and understanding the clients’ needs are essential in helping customers have a great experience with their boats. He works out of the McMichael Yacht Broker’s Newport office at the Newport Shipyard.

Rick resides in Portsmouth, RI, with his family, having fallen in love with the Newport area during his many sailing events there. He recently retired as the director/coach of the Portsmouth High School Sailing Team after many years, and along with his wife, Carline, now enjoys his time proudly following their youngest son, Tyler, who just finished his second year at the US Naval Academy. Tyler is a very accomplished sailor himself, and a member of the nationally ranked USNA dinghy sailing team. Rick is a member of Sail Newport and can be seen racing many weeknights and weekends in all the local events in a variety of boats.

Michael Beers Michael is a licensed captain and active racer who began his sailing career in Boston on the Charles River. As someone who did not grow up sailing, he especially enjoys introducing new boaters to the sport. Michael has a proven track record of working tirelessly for his clients, and enjoys working directly with buyers to identify the best possible “next boat” from the many options available. He is an active racer, recently racing in the J/70 fleet at Quantum Key West Race Week and aboard the J/130 Dragonly in the 2012 Newport Bermuda Race.

Prior to joining McMichael in 2007, he captained the 80′ schooner Adirondack II in Newport, RI and was an instructor at Offshore Sailing. In his free time, he enjoys cruising his Sabre.

Todd Williams Todd started sailing on his family’s cruising boat before his memory serves. His love of racing was cultivated through sailing Blue Jays and Lasers in Pequot Yacht Club’s junior program.  Since then he has actively raced in the J105 fleet, J109 fleet, and helped form the J122 class. He also developed and helped launch the LIS IRC 35 class.  Todd is an experienced distance sailor and was involved with winning the Vineyard race class and IRC overall aboard the J122 Partnership.

Todd enjoys using his extensive knowledge of boating to find his clients the boat that best suits their needs.  He is dedicated to providing the best possible service to all his customers.  Todd can often be found racing with clients and helping them build their racing programs. Through the years, he has custom built many J/Boats, Alerions, and MJM power boats for clients, many of whom he now considers personal friends.

During the winter season you may spot the Williams family on the slopes at Okemo where they have a ski house.

Andy Kaplan Starting October 4, Andrew (Andy) Kaplan has joined the brokerage team at McMichael Yacht Yards & Brokers. The addition increases the McMichael roster to seven full-time yacht brokers serving customers up and down the east coast with a concentration on the Long Island Sound and Narragansett Bay. He will work primarily out of the McMichael Mamaroneck, NY, office as well as Martha’s Vineyard.

“Andy is bringing to McMichael a lifetime of experience in sail and power boating with a keen focus in the sailboat racing world,” said McMichael President Steve Leicht. “His broad familiarity with offshore and one-design sailboats combined with his powerboating experience makes him an ideal addition to our brokerage team.”

Kaplan spent the majority of his career in finance including helping create the Quattro Global Capital, LLC where he was a principal and head of operation and marketing. “I believe that my financial sales and management experience is a great asset as I transition to yacht brokerage,” noted Kaplan. “While they are different industries, to succeed in either you need similar disciplines when matching buyers with the right product. That’s what creates and maintains long term customer relationships.”

Kaplan grew-up in Mamaroneck and has been a member of the Larchmont Yacht Club for over 30 years where he has been active in the Club’s leadership. He lives in New Rochelle, NY, and on Martha’s Vineyard, MA.
