Let’s build an Epheria Sailboat

Hello, Adventurers!

Adventurers are looking for ways to travel across the ocean as it opens up a new horizon.

In their search, the Epheria Sailboat has been catching a lot of Adventurers’ attention.

So, today we will cover everything you need to know, from its characteristics to how to build your own!

■ When exploring the great ocean, get on a big boat!

The ocean is extremely big, and in it there are sea monsters, phantom ships, pirates, and other dangers.

When faced with such threats, you will need cannons to defend yourself. If not, all you can do is watch helplessly as your ship is attacked.

Therefore, it is much safer to cross the ocean on a galley or an Epheria Sailboat than a fishing boat or a rowboat.

▲ Dangers of the ocean

Let’s take a look at some notable features of the galley and Epheria Sailboat.

The galley is a long ship with many gunports that can be owned by guilds.

■ How do you build an Epheria Sailboat?

It is a good idea to build an Epheria Sailboat to get started your ocean exploration.

The Epheria Sailboats can only be built in Port Epheria as you might have guessed from its name.

black desert sailboat

Once you have your shipyard ready, let’s get building!

The materials required for building an Epheria Sailboat as listed in the shipyard, is as follows: - Design: Epheria Sailboat (20) - Standardized Timber Square (800) - Steel (600) - Pine Plywood (1500) - Flax Fabric (300)

The most common way of acquiring ‘Design: Epheria Sailboat’ is through a daily quest.

You can receive the quest from Philaberto Falasi in Port Epheria. It’s a simple quest where you deliver 2 pieces of cargo which rewards 1 Design: Epheria Sailboat.

black desert sailboat

There are plenty of other materials that you need to prepare. You can get them through nodes, production, and processing.

Your character must gather some logs since they can’t be obtained from nodes. We suggest the pine tree forest near Trent, so you can get both the pine timber and logs at the same time.

black desert sailboat

Building a ship doesn’t work like other normal types of production where 1 work order results in 1 finished products, but instead you will need to complete the various parts through multiple work orders and put it together.

For example, the 20 Design: Epheria Sailboat requires 20 work orders.

However, to complete the entire ship with a single worker, it would require a total of 3,220 work orders. Therefore, you should use multiple workers to save time.

black desert sailboat

As mentioned earlier, using 1 worker to finish the 20 Design: Epheria Sailboat requires 20 work orders. However, if you get 20 workers, it can be done in 1 work order.

If you have workers resting in other towns, connect the nodes between those towns to get more workers to help build the ship. The workers from different towns need the materials in their town storage for them to produce.

The Epheria Sailboat is well suited for ocean voyages, so try building one for yourself!

We hope this helps answer some questions about the Epheria Sailboat you might have had. We’ll return with more facts and tips to send our Adventurers on their adventure.

Smooth sailing!

Ship Upgrades

You can follow the upgrade chart below to build your ship up to an Epheria carrack.

Steps for Upgrading to Epheria Carracks

black desert sailboat

The basic starter ship for most Adventurers is the Bartali sailboat. However, you can opt to purchase an Epheria sailboat or frigate license from the Central Market to skip this step.

As you can see above, you will need to pick between an Epheria sailboat or frigate early on, as it will give you different options of Epheria carracks you can ultimately upgrade your ship to, depending on their use.

Bartali Sailboat

black desert sailboat

The Bartali sailboat is the most basic of the large ships you can get. It can be purchased from Proix, the owner of the Dancing Marlin Tavern in Velia, for 10,000,000 silver.

You can also obtain one as a quest reward through the questline [The Great Expedition] First Sailboat into Oquilla’s Eye , which begins with the quest Vigorous Velia , with a Lv. 50 or higher character while in the territory of Balenos. The actual quest that gives the ship as a reward is called Jarette's Support .

It is also recommended to do this questline due to the sailor’s oath it gives as rewards. These items, when used, permanently expand your max sailor slots. These become important down the line as you progress in your effort to obtain better ships.

black desert sailboat

Remember, you can purchase the ship licenses for Epheria sailboats and frigates from the Central Market, if you can afford it, to skip this part of the process.

Epheria Sailboat/Frigate

black desert sailboat

The Epheria sailboat (left) and Epheria frigate (right) are on the second stage of the carrack upgrade path. As these two ships differ in which type of carracks they can ultimately upgrade to, they’re the point in which an important decision has to be made.

Epheria sailboats allow you to eventually make the Balance carrack or the Advance carrack. The Balance carrack has stats evenly distributed, while the Advance carrack is the ideal ship for bartering, as it can carry more weight.

Epheria frigates on the other hand allow you to make the Valor carrack or the Volante carrack. The Valor carrack is great for sea monster hunting and naval combat, while the Volante carrack is the fastest of all the carracks.

Do you ultimately want the best ship for naval combat, or the fastest one? Go for an Epheria frigate. Do you, instead, want the best ship for bartering, or a jack of all trades, master of none? Go for an Epheria sailboat.

black desert sailboat

Remember that ship licenses for Epheria sailboats and frigates can be purchased from the Central Market.

If you would like to make your own, follow the steps shown below.

◈ How to Upgrade

Register the ship you wish to upgrade at a wharf via the Wharf Manager NPC. Then use the Upgrade menu option and add all the materials required to upgrade the ship.

However, you cannot upgrade your ship under the following circumstances: - A piece of equipment is not at max durability. - The ship has equipment equipped or has items in its inventory. - A sailor is on board the ship.

black desert sailboat

◈ Upgrade Materials

The equipment required to upgrade the Bartali sailboat to an Epheria sailboat or Epheria frigate can be purchased from Philaberto Falasi in Port Epheria. You can then use black stone (armor) to enhance them. When you fail an enhancement attempt, the max durability of the equipment will decrease. You can purchase more of the same equipment and use the copies to repair the original’s max durability to full.

black desert sailboat

Alternatively, you can craft your own Epheria sailboat & frigate ship licenses in the town house of Port Epheria 3-5, 2nd floor, when employed as a shipyard. Obtaining them this way, most of the materials needed are halved in number.

◈ Improved Epheria Sailboat/Frigate

Additionally, sailboats and frigates can both be improved. Once they are improved, you can use the skills Volley and Focus Fire. Volley allows you to move the cannons on the left or right and fire them. Focus Fire allows you to fire multiple shots quickly at a location of your choice.

There are certain upgrade materials that can be obtained by defeating sea monsters. Defeating these enemies will also help you obtain materials for the next step of the upgrade path. Thus, having your ship improved will aid you in your endeavor to build a carrack.

As with the upgrade from a Bartali sailboat, you can improve your ships at any wharf manager.

However, keep in mind that improving your ship does not change the materials required to upgrade them to a caravel or galleass.

◈ Improved Sailboat/Frigate Upgrade Materials

Epheria Caravel/Galleass

black desert sailboat

Epheria caravels (left) have 30 slots and can carry 10,000LT. This makes them great trading and bartering ships. On the other hand, the Epheria galleass (right) has 4 cannons on each side, for a total of 8 cannons, which makes them great for naval combat.

Both of them can be improved to use the sailing skill Volley while moving, or the  Focus Fire skill to fire multiple shots quickly at a location of your choice for massive damage.

Some of the upgrade materials for both types of ships are obtained by defeating sea monsters, while others require you to barter for them. Both methods, sea monster hunting and bartering, will broaden your knowledge of content available at sea. That’s why even if you only want a bartering ship you will need to defeat sea monsters, and why even if you only want a ship for naval combat you will need to barter a bit.

The materials required to upgrade your ship to a caravel or galleass are listed below.

◈ Epheria Caravel and Galleass Upgrade Materials

The 4 pieces of equipment required to upgrade to an Epheria caravel or Epheria galleass can be purchased from Philaberto Falasi in Port Epheria. The equipment pieces can be enhanced using verdant black stones. When using these stones to enhance ship equipment, you have a 100% chance to succeed at all levels. You will need 55 verdant black stones to enhance a piece of equipment up to +10, and a total of 220 verdant black stones to enhance all four of them.

You can obtain verdant black stones as follows.

1. Ravinia’s sisters have anchored in Port Epheria (Ruvinia), Velia (Rovinia), and Iliya Island (Revinia). You can exchange Lv. 1 bartering trade goods through Ruvinia, Rovinia, and Revinia in exchange for Crow Merchants Guild's barter vouchers.

2. Bring the Crow Merchants Guild's barter vouchers obtained from one of the sisters to Ravinia at the Crow’s Nest to exchange them for verdant black stones. Rumor has it that Morco in Velia will also take these vouchers and exchange them for verdant black stones as well.

3. Alternatively, at a low rate, you can obtain these black stones from defeating the following sea monsters: Young Hekaru, Young Ocean Stalker, Hekaru, and Ocean Stalker.

◈ Crow’s Nest and Ravinia

You might not have heard of Crow’s Nest or Ravinia at this point in your adventure.  Crow’s Nest is an island shrouded in fog, located north of Tinberra Island.

Once you arrive in Crow’s Nest, you can talk to the NPC Ravinia. She runs the crow coin shop that sells items needed to upgrade large ships. However, keep in mind that she asks for large sums of crow coins for any purchase, and thus it cannot be relied upon to obtain all the materials you require to upgrade your ships.

black desert sailboat

Crow’s Nest is the island covered in fog managed by the Crow Merchants Guild, located north of Tinberra Island. Many at sea, both wealthy and unfortunate alike, search for its location for one or another reason.

Ravinia also gives the Ravinia’s Ship Upgrade Log questline you will have seen mentioned above. You can complete these quests to get ship upgrading materials you need.

The first quest you get is called Ravinia’s Ship Upgrade Log I, and the last quest is Ravinia’s Ship Upgrade Log VII. It will take 7 days to accept these quests in order. When you complete each of these quests, Ravinia will reward you with Ravinia's Wiggly Waggly Letter. You use these letters to accept quests from Ravinia. The quests she gives provide upgrade materials required to upgrade caravels and galleasses.

black desert sailboat

In the above picture, the different Epheria carracks are depicted: Balance, Volante, Valor, Advance (starting top-left and in clockwise direction).

Each carrack has a different trait.

◆ Epheria Carrack - Balance: A carrack with well-balanced stats. ◆ Epheria Carrack - Volante: An agile carrack with the fastest movement speed.

◆ Epheria Carrack - Valor: A combat-oriented carrack with the highest attack power.

◆ Epheria Carrack - Advance: A carrack with the highest storage capacity, making it most useful for content such as bartering.

Ship Equipment

You can install / equip the Epheria caravels, galleasses, and carracks, with ship equipment such as cannons, figureheads, sails, and plating.

Ship equipment starts at green grade, and can be upgraded to blue grade equipment. Be sure to purchase and enhance the correct types of ship equipment for each type of ship.

◈ Epheria Caravel and Galleass Green Grade Equipment

Make sure you purchase the right equipment suited for your type of ship.

Blue grade equipment, which is the next grade of equipment, can be crafted at the Ship Part Workshop in Port Epheria 1-4, 2F.

black desert sailboat

The equipment required to upgrade the Bartali Sailboat to an Epheria Sailboat or Epheria Frigate can be purchased from Philaberto Falasi in Port Epheria. You can then use Black Stone (Armor) to enhance them . When you fail an enhancement attempt, the max durability of the equipment will decrease. You can purchase more of the equipment and use the copies to repair the original’s max durability to full .

Additionally, Sailboats and Frigates can both be improved . Once they are improved, you can use the skills Volley and FocusFire .

Volley allows you to move the cannons on the left or right and fire them. While FocusFire allows you to fire multiple shots quickly at a location of your choice.

There are certain upgrade materials that can be obtained by defeating sea monsters. So, having your ship improved will aid you in your endeavor to build a carrack.

You can improve your ships at the Wharf Manager .

※ However , improving your ship does not change the materials required to upgrade them to a Caravel or Galleass .

■ Epheria Sailboat, Frigate Upgrade Materials

4. epheria caravel / galleass    .

Once you have obtained your Epheria Sailboat or Frigate, you can then work toward upgrading them to a Caravel or Galleass .

Caravels have 30 slots and can carry 10,000LT. This makes them great trading and bartering ships .

On the other hand, the Epheria Galleass has 4 cannons on each side, for a total of 8 cannons, which makes them great for naval combat.

Both of them can be improved to use the sailing skill Volley while moving, or the  FocusFire skill to fire multiple shots quickly at a location of your choice for massive damage.

There are certain upgrade materials that can be obtained by defeating sea monsters. So, having your ship improved will aid you in your efforts toward building a carrack.

The materials required to upgrade your ship to a Caravel or Galleass are listed below .

■ crow’s nest and ravinia    .

You might not have heard of Crow’s Nest or Ravinia at this point in your adventure.

Crow’s Nest is a small island located north of Tinberra Island .     Once you arrive in Crow’s Nest, you can talk to the NPC “ Ravinia .” She runs the Crow Coin Shop that sells items needed to upgrade large ships.

black desert sailboat

▲ “ Crow’s Nest” is the island covered in fog, north of Tinberra Island .

Ravinia also gives the " Ravinia’s Ship Upgrade Log " quests. You can complete these quests to get the materials you need for upgrades.

The first quest you get is called “Ravinia’s Ship Upgrade Log I” and the last quest is “ Ravinia’s Ship Upgrade Log VII.” It will take 7 days to accept these quests in order. When you complete each of these quests, Ravinia will reward you with “ Ravinia's Wiggly Waggly Letter .” You use these letters to accept quests from Ravinia. The quests she gives provide upgrade materials required to upgrade Caravels and Galleass .

The 4 pieces of equipment required to upgrade a Epheria Caravel or Epheria Galleass can be purchased from Philaberto Falasi in Port Epheria . The equipment can be enhanced using  “ Verdant Black Stones.” When using Verdant Black Stones to enhance ship equipment, you have a 100% chance to succeed at all levels. You will need Verdant Black Stone x55 to enhance a piece of equipment up to +10, a total of 220 Verdant Black Stones to enhance all four of them .

You can obtain Verdant Black Stones as follows.

1. Ravinia’s sisters have anchored in Port Epheria (Ruvinia), Velia (Rovinia), and Iliya Island (Revinia). You can exchange Lv. 1 trade goods through Ruvinia, Rovinia, and Revinia for a Crow Merchants Guild's Barter Voucher.      2. Bring the Crow Merchants Guild's Barter Voucher obtained from one of the sisters to Ravinia at the Crow’s Nest to exchange it for Verdant Black Stones. Rumor has it that Morco in Velia will also take Crow Merchants Guild's Barter Vouchers and exchange them for Verdant Black Stones as well.

5. Epheria Carrack(Balance, Advance, Volante, Valor)

You can upgrade the Epheria Carrack into four different types, and each vessel bears a unique trait. You can choose to upgrade your Carrack into one that best suits your playstyle .

How to Build Epheria Sailboat, The Personal Trading Boat in BDO

The Epheria Sailboat can be only built in a level 3 shipyard, and you can use sailors to enhance different stats.

It needs a massive amount of materials as the sailboat is on a whole other level compared to any existing fishing boat, ferry, or raft. The amount of pine plywood and timber squares needed for construction ranges from 600 to 1500 at maximum.

Also, the construction is only available after 20 days at least, given that you are not participating in anything else besides the daily quest given by Falasi. Even if you have constantly saved up other materials, you still need 20 designs to construct the ship. You can obtain one design from the daily quest in Epheria, meaning that you will need to eventually complete 20 daily quests.

black desert sailboat

Do the quest, and gather the designs

You obviously need to gather the materials first if you ever wish to attempt to build this sailboat. The materials you need for the construction are 20 Design: Epheria Sailboat, 800 Standardized Timber Squares, 600 Steel, 1500 Pine Plywood, and 300 Flax Fabric.

Here’s the breakdown of the required materials:

20 Design: Epheria Sailboat 600 steel [3000 coal + 15000 iron ore] 300 flax fabric [15000 flax] 800 standardized timber square [80000 logs]

Note that the amount of raw materials above are just theoretical, under assumption that you only produce one item per input. The number can be reduced significantly due to varying results from processing, with the range of 1~4 products per one input given that your processing level is at Artisan. So-called “critical hits for processing” further reduce the potential amount of required materials because it allows players to produce upper tier items. For example, you can sometimes get standardized timber square straight from chopping logs, although the chance is low.

You need to speak to Philaberto Falasi in Epheria and get the daily quest that will offer Design: Epheria Sailboat. The quest requires a player to take a crate and deliver it to Sebastian on the docks twice.

The quest itself is quite simple and can be done swiftly, but it will take 20 days as the quest is available only once a day for one family. The quest does not require amity and is obtainable if the character is level 11.

black desert sailboat

There is also the one time questline in Epheria that allows you to obtain up to 3 additional Designs. After you reach level 55, you can start the quest by talking to Pavino Greko, the storage keeper in Epheria, and the quest can be seen on the recommended quest list.

The questline begins from ‘I Knew This Day Would Come’ and consists of more than 20 quests. You get one design from each of the following quests along the consecutive questline; ‘Dream Crushed by Cox Pirates’, ‘Grotesque Trench’, and ‘Completed Map, Toward the Ancient Shrine’.

Not only does the questline provide the sailboat designs, it also offers Margoria’s AdventurerⅠCompass, Golden Dagger, Gold Ingot, and other various items, so it would be worth it to try out if you have a character higher than level 55. However, you need to either prepare some items that enhance swimming speed or take a ferry, as the quests require players to sail the sea.

black desert sailboat

Materials other than the design are obtainable by gathering or sending workers to the nodes. With the standardized timber square, you can process the log twice to have one timber square. You get the usable scantling when you chop the log under processing, and you get the standardized timber square when you chop the usable scantling.

Unlike other materials such as steel, pine plywood, and flax fabric, you can only obtain standardized timber squares when you manually gather the wood, hence the process requires a lot of time. You can purchase logs and timber squares from the marketplace if you can spare silver, but chances are that it would be much faster to just chop the trees yourself.

With pine plywood, you can get it by processing pine timbers. The process goes: pine plank from pine timbers by chopping, and a pine plywood from pine planks. You can get timber by cutting them down manually or sending some workers, and the nodes that provide timbers are the Serendia Shrine and Marie Cave. It is recommended to do both manual logging and using workers together since the required amount of timber is massive.

If you are looking to cut down some logs yourself, it would be wise to visit the area where you can gather pine timber as well. The place is southwest of Calpheon; the area around Calpheon Castle and the road on the way to Trent to be exact. You can also find a handful of pine timber around the Castle Ruins.

black desert sailboat

The iron ore and flax which are used for steel and flax fabric can be also obtained by manual gathering and using workers. However, it is wise to use workers for this type of materials.

You can gather iron ore at a number of nodes such as Coastal Cave, Coastal Cliff, Northern Heidel Quarry, Southern Cienaga, Hexe Stone Wall, Abandoned Iron Mine, Bashim Base, Pilgrim’s Haven, and Crescent Mountains, and flax at Costa Farm, Moretti Plantation, and Kamasylve Temple.

As you can only gather logs by manually cutting them down, it is wise to use energy on manual logging and use workers for iron ore and flax. If you are lacking contribution points and cannot connect all nodes, it is efficient to connect the nodes around Serendia and Glish.

black desert sailboat

And start building

You can start building a boat at a leased shipyard once you have gathered all the necessary materials. The sailboat can be built at the level 3 shipyard located at the second floor of Epheria 3-5.

You will need as many workers as you can spare to shorten the building time as the required amount of materials is massive and the number of processes is over 3000. You need to send more workers from other cities such as Calpheon if you have a shortage.

black desert sailboat

It would be good to get a sailor while the construction is still on progress. You can get sailors from named worker NPCs in Calpheon by working on amity. There are 4 out of 7 amity workers that offer the sailor contract. The following list depicts the name and effect of each sailor upon initial acquirement:

Berocchio - Braking +1% Bravant - Speed +1% Tarte - Acceleration +1% Khaora - Turn +1%

Black Desert Online: How To Get Your First Boat

If you want to set sail in Black Desert Online, you'll first need to get your hands on a boat. Here are the various ways to get one.

Quick Links

Why do you need a boat, finding a port city, what is a boat license, earn a free boat through questing, how to build a boat license from a shipyard, boats on the central market, buying a raft.

Black Desert Online allows you to explore the vast world, traveling to new cities and defeating powerful bosses. In addition to this, you will get the opportunity to have a boat to travel the seas. In this guide, we are going to go over how to get your first boat . There are several different types of boats available, and it can be hard to know where to start.

Related: Black Desert Online: Best Ways To Make Silver

We are going to go over a few of the easiest ways to get your first boat. This is meant for players with little to no sailing experience. There are a few simple ways to get your first boat, including purchasing one from the Central Market, building your own, or completing a long questline. First, let's take a look at why you need a boat.

Updated on May 3, 2023: We've updated this guide for readability so you can be on your way to getting a boat in BDO as soon as possible.

Boats are optional. You will not need a boat right away, and it is not necessary when you are first making your way through the world.

Eventually, a boat will come in handy to help you explore the north part of the map .

As you proceed north, you will come across harbor cities and islands. Many of these islands are nodes where you can send workers. Prior to purchasing the node, you will need to visit it .

This means that to successfully send workers to island nodes, you will need to have a boat first . Overall, a boat is helpful for your maritime bartering and worker management.

To get your first boat, you will need to find a port city with a wharf. These are essentially just cities along the water that have a dock. Port cities are important because they are where you will store your boat.

Similar to horses and Stable Keepers, you will store boats with a Wharf Manager, as well as register new boats. Wharf Managers can be found near the docks of a city. If you are having trouble finding the NPC, just head towards the water.

Below, you can find some cities that have a Wharf Manager. There are more Wharf Managers spread throughout the map, but these cities are recognizable and easy to get to.

  • Port Epheria

Rather than crafting or purchasing an entire boat, you will acquire a boat license. This is a paper stating that you own the boat.

Every boat requires a license, and you will need to visit a Wharf Manager to register the boat.

For example, if you have a license for a basic sailboat, you can visit any Wharf Manager to register it . The sailboat will be stored at the Wharf, and you can take it out whenever you want. Like horses, boats can be stored with different Wharf Managers .

There are a few different ways to acquire your first boat license. Let's take a look at obtaining a license through a questline.

The first way to get a boat is through The Great Expedition: Oquilla's Eye questline. This is a long questline that will result in several rewards and tons of experience.

Through this chain of quests, you will get two different ship licenses. After finishing the first quest, you will be rewarded with the Bartali Sailboat license. Once you have completed the entire questline, you will also receive the license for the Epheria Cog.

To begin this quest, you will need to speak with Jarette at the Western Guard Camp. This is one of the first areas that you will come across in the story, near Red Nose.

Jarette will ask you to take a letter to Proix, in Velia. This isn't too far, and you can run there pretty quickly if you do not already have a horse. Once the letter is delivered, you will get 50 contribution EXP, a Sailor's Oath (this allows you to have sailors on your boat), and the ship license for the Bartali Sailboat .

Speaking to Jarette will trigger the questline , leading you to the two ship licenses.

Remember, The Great Expedition: Oquilla's Eye questline is long. If you just want the Bartali Sailboat, you can complete the first quest and then go exploring .

However, the Epheria Cog is a great ship, so try to eventually finish the questline fully . The boat is incredibly fast, making it great for quick exploration.

You can create your own boat license from any shipyard in addition to completing a questline. Shipyards are housing types that can be found in any port city. They allow you to create new types of boat licenses that you can turn in to Wharf Managers.

Like other housing types, you will be able to level up your shipyard . Leveling allows you to create new licenses that you can register. Alternatively, you can sell licenses on the Central Market to make silver . These licenses will require materials to craft.

This may not be the quickest way to get a ship, but it allows you to control which ships you will receive .

Gathering Materials For A Ship License

Once you have a shipyard, you will need to gather the materials to make the boat. For a level one shipyard in Port Epheria, you can craft the license for a Calpheon Rowboat. To build this, you will need the following materials.

  • 10 Useable Scantling
  • 20 Fir Plywood
  • 10 Iron Ingot
  • 10 Cedar Sap
  • 16 Black Stone Powder

This material can be gathered with the help of workers .

After you have gathered the necessary materials, you will be able to craft your first boat license. When your workers have finishing crafting, take the license to any Wharf Manager and register your boat.

The boat will appear in the Wharf and you will immediately be able to take it out and explore .

Instead of setting up a shipyard, you can go straight to the Central Market and buy a license. This will be expensive though.

If you have enough silver and don't really want to spend time and resources on a shipyard or doing quests, then consider buying a license from the market.

There may be some boats in stock, but if there are none available, you can place an order. When you place an order, you will be added to a list of other players who want to purchase the item.

You will notice that there are several options to choose from. To get your first boat quickly, try to find a listing that has been sold recently .

To do this, click on the boat you want. There will be a section displaying how many of the item has been sold, as well as when it was last sold . If a ship hasn't been sold in a while, it may take some time to get.

If you don't have enough silver, but still want to buy a boat, you can purchase a raft license. Wharf Managers will sell a raft license for 10,000g. This is reasonably priced, but rafts are incredibly slow.

Buying a raft is a quick and cheap way to get your first ship, but it is definitely not an efficient choice .

Rafts can also be crafted in certain shipyards . For example, a shipyard in Velia can craft a basic raft license for just 25 logs and three black stone powder .

This may sound like a good deal, but just keep in mind that rafts are slow and there are better ships out there .

If your goal is to just get to a node and back , then feel free to get a raft.

Introduction

This guide only covers beginner ships (Tier 0 only) such as the Fishing Boat and Raft. If you are looking for Epheria ships please click here to refer to our more advanced guide.

There are lots of different types of ships in Black Desert Online and each has a different tier. Tier 1 or higher ships can have ship skills and also have their own UI and uses other than just transportation. Tier 0 ships will also be destroyed when they run out of durability, whilst Tier 1 and higher ships can be repaired at a Wharf Manager.

Ships allow the player to travel through the rivers and oceans of BDO independently, without the need of a NPC ferry. Acquiring these ships can be done two ways, buying them off the auction house or crafting. As the ships get larger, more materials and effort are required to construct them.

Pre-requisites for this guide!

Please have a look at the guide on workers & purchasing property if you have not done so. This guide will not cover how to create and sustain workers!

BDO Sailing FAQ for Beginners

SAILING & SHIP FAQ

  • BDO Boat Stuck or Sunk? Help!
  • Release and Regrab the Wheel:  Boats often get stuck by the wharf manager, when you try to leave. Sometimes there is another ship on top of you or sometimes nothing will be there, but you are still stuck. This is the technique I use and it usually works. Release the wheel and regrab it again. Try NOT to back out or go forward in a turn! Back out straight or go forward straight. If you are still stuck, try releasing and grabbing again.
  • Go Back to the Wharf Manager:  This is the second technique I use, if the above doesn’t work. Check in/Check out again!
  • Ship Summon:  You can teleport your boat to your location. You must be within the right distance, though. Press LMB over the ship anchor icon in the top left of your UI, at a distance of 30-40. If you get too close, it will teleport YOU to the ship instead. If you are too far, you will get an error. To see if you are at the correct distance, press RMB over the anchor icon. The little numbers that pop up show your distance.
  • Escape Option:   If the ship summon doesn’t help, there is also the Escape option. Press Esc key and then the “Escape” button in the game interface. You will be transported to a “safe” area, but without your ship! The times I have used it, I was placed on the beach of the main land. Don’t do this unless you have no other choice, because you don’t know exactly where it will place you. Note that if you do this in the Great Ocean, it will NOT put you on the main land. It puts you in a safe location in the Great Ocean water, which doesn’t help. You will have to Remote Collect your ship, which usually comes with severe penalites! (ex. Sick Sailors, 0 Durability, Destroyed items)
  • Contact Support Option:   You can use the in-game support and let them know your boat is stuck. My sister did this once and they transported her and her boat all the way to Velia, even though she was way over in the deep sea by Port Epheria. This option can take over a day to complete, so you will have to play an alt while you wait. Use at your own risk!
  • Old Moon Flare:   Costs 300 Loyalties (F3). This will make a rescue ship spawn and sail to Port Ratt or Lema Island. It can be a bit buggy. Sometimes nothing happens and you may have to use two.
  • Can I sail to Margoria with a Fishing Boat or non-Epheria ship?
  • It’s possible to cross the Great Ocean on a lower tier, non-Epheria ship, like a Fishing Boat, but it’s NOT recommended, unless you really know what you are doing. A low tier ship can only take 1 or 2 hits from hostile sea monsters, and it’s not easy to outrun a Nineshark in a slow boat. To have any chance of not getting stranded in the middle of the ocean on a wimpy ship, you have to be very vigilant and careful. Hekaru (big purple whale) and Ocean Stalker (green sea snake) are friendly unless attacked. However, Pirate ships and every other sea monster will be hostile. Avoidance Tip: study a sea monster map and steer clear of sea monsters with white and light blue coloring. You’ll notice that if you skirt around the northern edge, you can avoid much of the Pirate and Nineshark spawn locations. In your game settings, have viewing distance at max and run around everything suspicious in the water. *Gulp!* Good Luck you Fish monger!

BDO Sailing on a Fishing Boat

  • Can a Fishing Boat survive a ghost/phantom ship?
  • The ghost ship doesn’t do too much damage to a ship. It will leave Fishing Boats alone and only stops higher tier ships like the Galley/Epheria Ships.
  • Is a Cog ship faster than an Epheria ship?
  • Cog ship has fast speed and even feels faster than an Epheria ship, when the current and wind is at 0. The more distance you get from the mainland, the more current and wind you have to fight against. Epheria ships are able to fold their sails to avoid weather and you can also use ship skills to help with speed. Cog ships don’t allow ship skills. Cog ships are good for beginner areas, but be careful venturing too far in them. (Another limitation is they have a limited Lifespan that can’t be repaired.)
  • Can I harpoon off my Epheria ship?
  • You can only harpoon off of a Fishing Boat. Galleys/Epheria ships can’t be used if you want to do any harpooning.
  • Do i have to buy more than one cannon for the Epheria ships?
  • You automatically have a cannon, but you can purchase a green grade one at the vendor, and can craft a blue grade cannon in a workshop. You only need to make/buy/enhance one cannon and they will be used for all the cannons you see on the higher tier ships that have cannons.
  • How many repair materials/kits should i bring?
  • Voyages from Port Epheria to Port Ratt and back to Port Epheria won’t require repair kits on an Epheria Sailboat. However, if you are hunting sea monsters, you will want tier 2 (blue grade) repair kits. But if possible, you’re better off sailing to a Wharf Manager and repairing. Repair kits are really only useful if you have another player helping. (Expect to spend 1 million silver for full repair at a Wharf Manager.)
  • Can I get killed in PVP on a ship?
  • Other players can flag for PVP and attack you and your boat as long as you are near it and you are level 50+. Olvia server doesn’t allow PVP. I also caution you not to go AFK on your ship, even if you think it’s in a safe zone. I did this once, and when I came back someone had somehow picked me up and deposited me by a hostile sea monster spawn. If you decide to flag up for PVP, and destroy another player’s ship, even a Raft, Rowboat, etc. in forced PvP mode, your Karma will decrease by 200,000. You cannot destroy other players ships, if they are not nearby.
  • Do I need workers for an Epheria or a Guild Ship?
  • You can exchange 30 Shakatu Seals for an Epheria Sailboat and you can quest for some ships. Upgrading ships does not require a shipyard or workers. But to craft a ship in a shipyard, you will want many regular city workers. You can also obtain Sailors for higher tier Epheria ships, but these are seperate from city workers. Sailors buff your ship and find treasure on barter islands. Sailors aren’t required, but are nice to have.
  • Do I need to load the cannon after each shot?
  • Cannonballs are purchased at the <Wharf Manager> for 1,000 Silver each. Cannons automatically reload as they are fired. Click on the option to “Buy Supplies” at the <Wharf Manager>. There is a cannon reload timer, specific to each ship.
  • Can I hunt sea monsters solo?
  • It is very difficult now to hunt sea monsters solo, unless you have an Improved Epheria or greater boat that has Captain controlled cannons. (This just means that the boat automatically aims and fires the cannon, after you click RMB or LMB.) For player controlled cannons, you can’t move the ship and fire cannons at the same time. The Ram boat skill is solo friendly, but it has a heavy cost in ship Durability. Ship gear is important for sea monster hunting. Allot will depend upon the enhancement level of your cannon and plating of the ship. Preferably +7, but that is expensive to obtain. At least have +5 green gear.
  • Which T2 Epheria ship is best?
  • Epheria Sailboat:   25 inventory slots. 5,000LT weight limit. 10% lower Speed, Brake, Accel, Turn. 2 cannons. Much cheaper to buy or build. Blue boat gear requires 50% less materials.
  • Epheria Frigate:   12 inventory slots. 4,000LT weight limit. 10% higher Speed, Brake, Accel, Turn. 4 cannons. Blue gear requires 50% more mats.
  • TLDR: Epheria Sailboat excels at trading and barter. Epheria Frigate is better at manuverability and battle.
