Star Yacht Birkenhead Restoration Kit.

For yachts SY00, SY0, SY1, SY2 & SY3.

This is a kit of parts to help with the restoration of Star Yachts & other pond yachts. Depending on the size of yacht, there may be some spare parts.

Included are

2 metres of cotton rigging thread…this is as close to original that you will find…enough for yachts upto & including SY3.

2 solid brass mast pins (1.57mm or 1/16”diameter) again as close to original as can be.

1 solid brass front sail hook for SY0, SY1 & SY2 models, again to original spec.

2 handcut plastic bowsies approx 15mm x 5mm with 2mm holes.

4 deck staples.

1 brassed screw eye.

We do a separate kit listing for larger yachts.

We also do just rigging listings.

We also have mast set listings.

We’ve also just added a mast mounts listing.

This kit should be suitable for other yachts though some may have different fittings.

Blue Jacket Ship Crafters, in their book department sells two books on pond models. Both books are by M. de Lesseps. They are Pond Models and Pond Yachts How To Build And Sail Them. These books may have the information you're looking for.

Yowch $57 on Amazon! But I see only $21 at Blue Jacket. Thanks for the tip!

I wrote to the Central Park Yacht Club and they put me in touch with a gentleman with experience with the subject. I was touched by his generosity when he wrote back and sent along annotations on the photo I had sent him.

He explains that:

......... sheet-to-tiller rig: there were *two* mainsheets, one used on going to windward and the other on the run. Both typically had hooks on the end so they could be switched.

Sailing upwind, the boat sailed on balance only, tiller centered by the elastic as shown in the picture. The beating sheet ran from the end of the boom and was hooked on the ring on the main horse. Running sheet hung loose. On the run, the running sheet would be hooked to the tiller as shown, and run out so the main boom was swung out to one side or the other. The beating sheet would hang loose. The principle is that if the boom were swung to starboard, the boat would tend to turn to port. The pressure of the wind would pull on the main sheet against the elastic and give opposite helm to the rudder , thus guiding the boat. The jib would have a single sheet, adjusted with a tensioning device, let out for the run and pulled in for the beat.

Thanks for the link to the website! I thought I had seen them all by now but this was a new one to me. Here are some shots of the model I am restoring, one of two. THis example was likely not actually sailed. It has a lead keel but there is no rudder head, the rudder moves but does not pierce the deck.

The second model, not pictured, has rudimentary self steering gear and I will put up some photos of that later as I finish work on her.

I finished the restoration work I was doing on these two Pond Yacht Models. I have a new appreciation for this type of model and plan on building one of my own now. Here are some before and after photos. ANd then just some details shots.

Pond Yacht Antiques

STAR PRODUCTIONS OF BIRKENHEAD

Star yachts "guaranteed to sail".

Star Productions were founded by a First World War Belgian refugee Franz Marie Denye. Having worked in the Liverpool dockyards during the war once hostilities ceased he set up Star Yachts to manufacture a large range of wooden pond yachts and other children’s toys. He and his family continued production until the compulsory purchase of the factory forced closure in 1990.

The range of yachts and motor boats produced by Star was considerable in size and whilst there were many models which were consistent throughout the 70 years others varied enormously. Many can only be described as seaside or bath toys whereas others were serious sailing yachts made only to order. What makes collecting Stars even more interesting is that it appears few records were kept of many of these yachts. Sometimes this makes dating particular yachts difficult. The situation is complicated further by the fact that Star also produced boats for other manufacturers for example fishing boats for Lines Bros/Triang.

It is said that “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery” so there is a certain irony in the fact that following the demise of Star the Chinese started to reproduce some of the models. These were sold both in this country and North America.

Arguably in 70 years of the 20th century Star produced one of the largest ranges of Pond Yachts in tremendous quality and quantity. They were sold by some of the largest retailers such as Gamages and Bassett-Lowke and also by corner shops and arcades in most of our seaside towns.

Star Yachts can now be found in antique shops and collections literally all over the world.

Star Yachts of Birkenhead 1935 Catalogue

The Star Yacht factory in Birkenhead, England manufactured model sailing boats for a period of nearly 70 years, their yachts were successfully exported all over the world and yet, in spite of this, nowadays there seems to be very little information available identifying the broad spectrum of their products and how they had evolved over the years. From what I can gather the catalogues that were produced, depicting the full range of yachts in line drawings, were primarily intended for the trade with products listed in carton quantities and reference given to trade-terms, etc. so it is, perhaps, for this reason that so few have survived and that details of the companies products are so sketchy.

I have been fortunate to be able to scan a number of early catalogues that chart not only the development of Star’s core product, model yachts, but also the vast range of other associated toys that were produced in order that the business avoided the peaks and troughs of such seasonal sales.

I will be adding further catalogues and information over time.

Star Restorations

Above, before with the dreaded black deck pin staining, below, now with a new deck, rigging and the deck furniture refreshed.

This was Steve's dad's yacht originally. It has the pre-war brass badge dating it between 1933 - 39. Steve can remember playing with the yacht over 50 years ago and now thanks to a superb restoration by BSYAS member Chuck, he can now look forward to many hours having fun sailing it again.

Paul Capitain's early SB/3 Arctic Star restoration.

Paul acquired the yacht above in a well used and heavily over painted state and after identifying it as a rare 1933 rudderless SB/3 he set about a very thorough restoration keeping to the original lines. As you can see below, a very nice overall restoration and hard to tell that it started out as the original "Basket case". I'm sure he will be proud to take this one sailing.

And the SY/5 after a light restoration, with replacement sails, rigging, mast, bowsprit, ferrules and refreshed paintwork but keeping the play worn history.

Paul from Australia has restored his SY/4 that he has had for 65 years, a splendid job.

After rubbing down, repairing, undercoating and top coats of paint.

Now, his fully restored SY/7.

Here is a lovely early Arctic Star SB/3 from Paul Barker who has restored it to a very nice standard for his father who had sailed it as a boy.

Just the bow name transfers and ready to sail again.

From Anne Jones, Wirral, a much loved SY/3 that has been sympathetically restored to full use retaining the marks from many hours of happy sailing.

Well used but still loved, 40 years on.

Back to its former glory and ready for the lake with new sails, boom, mount pins, rigging, bowsies and the paintwork refreshed.

Made in the late 1930s, powered by a clockwork motor, this one is a 27" version called "Ocean Star".

Now resplendent including an all over paint job in original colours, re-rigged, new bow name transfers, port holes, cargo barrels and anchor. You can just see that it is floating in a bath of water especially for National Star Yacht Day, 2019.

From Ernie Stamp, Ernie goes through a thorough 20 day plus regime to completely restore his yachts. Here are a few of his many restorations;

First, an SY/7.

As received.

After restoration including stripping right back, preparation, many coats of paint then oiling the deck, topped with new sails and home made stand.

Next an early MK/3 brass badge example.

As found condition, no other option than a full restoration.

After, what a difference.

The finished yacht, you wouldn't think it was the same one.

Finally, an early solid yacht.

Really bad play worn condition & neglect.

The same yacht after hours of dedicated restoration.
