In this post, we are going to learn how to draw a sailboat with basic drawing tools. Be sure to observe the different sizes and shapes of each part of the sailboat. The pencil lines in each step is drawn out in blue so you can see the current parts that you will be illustrating.

Time Needed: 30 minutes

Draw The Hull

First, draw the top of the hull by creating a horizontal oval shape with two pointed edges similar to the illustration. Next, create the side of the hull by drawing a line attached to the pointed edges of the oval.

Add The Cabin

Add the cabin by forming a sloped rectangular box.

Draw Windows

Draw the windows by forming rectangular shapes as shown.

Attach The Mast

Attach the mast by drawing a long vertical pole.

Attach The Boom

Attach the boom to the right side of the mast by creating a shorter horizontal pole.

Draw The Sails

Let’s draw the sails of the sailboat! First, draw the mainsail by making a diagonal line connected to the mast and boom. Next, draw a triangular shape on the left side of the mast to form the jib.

Add The Burgee

Add the burgee by making a V-shaped line attached to the top of the mast.

Draw The Water

Draw the body of water surrounding the sailboat by making wavy horizontal lines.

Complete The Sailboat Drawing

Complete the sailboat drawing by first coloring the mainsail with an orange crayon and the jib with a red crayon. Next, shade the burgee with a yellow crayon. Now, fill in the mast and boom of the sailboat with a brown crayon. Then, color the cabin with a white crayon and the windows with a blue crayon. Don’t forget to shade the hull of the sailboat with indigo. Finally, fill in the sky with a light blue crayon and the body of water with a dark blue crayon.

The drawing is a cartoon sailboat and gives a basic idea of a sailboat sketch. You can later add more details to it and color it. Your kids will have a few good practice times, and soon they’ll be drawing boats like a pro!

Drawing the Sail

The first step is to the bottom frame of the sail. Draw a straight line as the bottom of the sail. Then a curved line like a wide m shape with the left curved line slightly smaller than the second.

Next, draw a leaf shape in the v portion from the previous step. Add a straight line under the bottom of the sail.

Next step, draw a curved line from the bottom line around the outside up to the point of the leaf shape. Draw one on each side of the sails creating a full shape of the sail. Then draw two horizontal lines under the sail as the top of the boat.

In the next step, draw a line through the bottom of the sail through the leaf shape, and out the top. Draw a small curvy line off the top and a small horizontal line between the top of the boat and the sail. Add a small curved line on both the front sail and back sail to add stripes to the sail. Then draw wavy lines under the top of the boat as the water.

Drawing the Body of the Sailboat

Draw a curved line as the bottom of the boat from each side of the boat down into the water. Then draw two slightly diagonal lines from the small horizontal line between the top of the boat and the sail down towards the top of the boat body creating a trapezoid shape as the top of the boat or helm. Draw a small curved line to complete the flag at the top of the sailboat.

Lastly, add the final details of the boat. Small details like three small circles on the boat body. Add two rectangles inside the helm.

The last step is to go over your drawing with a dark marker and then color in your sailboat. I love the idea of using basic colors.

How to Draw a Great Looking Sailboat for Kids and Beginners - Step 1

1. Begin by outlining the deck, bow, and stern of the boat . Use a long curved line for the deck, doubling it back upon itself to form the stern or back of the boat. From the front of the ship, extend a curved line, and double it back upon itself. You should outline a narrow shape. This marks the bow or the front of the boat.

2. Continue the curved line of the deck on the opposite side of the bow, continuing to outline the boat's hull. Beneath the point of the bow, draw a vertical curved line, indicating the contours of the lower bow. Then, draw a curved line down each side of the hull.

3. Outline the cabin using a long curved line. Note the corners that give the cabin a rectangular shape. Then, enclose a partial rectangle with rounded corners at the front of the cabin. This indicates a window.

6. Next, draw the jib, the sail at the front of the sailboat. Use curved lines to enclose a large triangle. One corner should meet the mast, the other the bow. From the remaining corner, draw a straight line to the deck.

This sailboat drawing started off years ago as a watercolor resist project, as it was so easy for students to draw. They could get the shapes down in no time, trace with a permanent black marker, add crayon texture lines to the water and trees, and then paint away. An example is included below. (Please note, those bright and pretty colors come from using real watercolor paper. It can be a bit pricey, but if you’re working on something for a special occasion, it’s worth it.)

To make things more flexible for non-painters though, I’ve made this version that just uses crayon. The super easy shapes still make it a good match for kinders and up, and the layering of the boat in front of the trees is good practice for young artists. It’s the step that comes after drawing things side by side.

Are you looking for a fun and easy art project for the kids this Summer ? Complete with sailboat silhouettes and seascape templates, this sailboat silhouette art project for Summer is sure to be a hit with the kids!

This versatile and fun summer art project will inspire your Arty Crafty Kids to explore color to help them recreate some of their favorite sunsets of the season. Children are encouraged to pay attention to how the sunset’s colors change, and to play with the paint as they blend the colors togethers.

They will learn how to use simple paint strokes to create a sense of perspective within their art and will be encouraged to think about the concept of foreground/background and light/shadow – and how these effects are applied to make the sailboats stand out from the colorful backdrop.

Step-by-step summer sailboat silhouette art tutorials:.

How to Paint to the Sun

To begin, prepare the paint palette. Add different shades of yellow, orange, red and blue, as well as white and black.

Using yellow and orange hues, paint the sun like a rainbow by following the arch shape. Start with the lightest shade of yellow and progress to deep orange hues.

Blend Yellow and Orange Shades

Using the sun as a mixing palette, layer different shades of yellow and orange; continuing to move the paintbrush back and forth across the layers to blend the colors.

Add white to lighten the colors.

Ideally, the darkest shades will be positioned at the bottom of the sun, where the sun meets the sea.

Paint the First Sun Ray

While the sun focusses on different shades of yellow and orange, the sun rays present an opportunity to explore the full spectrum of warm colors – these are colors that derive from red, yellow and orange.

Explore Warm Hues

Paint each ray with a blend of red, yellow and orange, creating light and dark shades of each color.

Start with the lightest shades first, using short paint strokes to create the impression of lines (rays of color) traveling away from the sun.

Progress from light to dark and continue layering the paint strokes – can your Arty Crafty Kids describe the effect this creates?

Complete the Sun Rays

Continue painting until the rays are bursting with colors!

While this tutorial features sun rays with multiple colors and blends, the rays may also be painted in block colors i.e one shade of red, orange, yellow, orange-red, pink etc. The end result will be just as effective and is a simple adaptation for younger Arty Crafty Kids.

How to Paint the Sea

Let’s move onto the cool colors ( colors that derive from shades of green, blue and purple).

Begin by framing the “sea” area with dark shades of blue.

How to Paint a Sunset Reflection and Create Perspective

Before progressing with the remainder of the sea, add a few paint strokes of yellow and orange into the white space directly below the sun. To create a sense of the perspective, the lines closest to sun should start wide and become narrower as they move away from the sun.

Adding a reflection to the water is a great way to introduce perspective to young artists.

Blend and Create Different Shades of Blue

With the beginnings of the reflection painted, fill the surrounding white space with different shades of blue. Add white to lighten the blue.

The Sea Meets the Sunset

Where the final sun rays meet the sea, paint a layer of red on top of the blue sea and mix to form a shimmer. The mix of blue and red will create gorgeous purple hues.

Use Simple Dry Brush Strokes to Merge the Reflection and Sea

Add a small amount of blue paint to a dry fine tipped paintbrush and brush it away the body of blue sea into the sun ray. The dry brush will make it difficult for the paint to spread and the strokes will need to be fairly forceful. The benefit of this technique is that it helps to merge the reflection into the sea without too much secondary color mixing – as well know that yellow and blue makes green!

The strokes will also be fairly bold in color, however slightly broken as the paint struggles to spread, allowing the color underneath (white or the sunset shimmer colors) to peak through.

Paint the Sailboat Silhouettes

The sunset seascape painting element is complete! leave the painting to thoroughly dry and move onto the sailboats. Paint the silhouettes black or any color/design of the Arty Crafty Kids choosing.

Glue the Sailboat Silhouettes to the Seascape Scene

Carefully cut out the painted sailboat silhouettes.

Next, glue the sailboat onto the seascape scene.

The seascape templates are open to all sorts of mediums, including oil pastels, watercolor paints and crayons (to name a few).
