  • aaron S 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Highly recommend for Powerboat L2. Took the powerboat level 2 course. As a relative novice I found our course instructor, Simon, to be very relaxed and unintimidating. He was clearly extremely knowledgeable and experienced and had some fantastic anecdotes to break up the learning. The weather was mixed so the tuition was flexed around this. Great experience and really pleased with everything I learnt. Simon was excellent! Read more Written October 10, 2022

  • Claire A 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles WHAT AN AWESOME POWER BOAT COURSE, CANT RECOMMEND HIGHLY ENOUGH! I did a two day power boating course this week. The level and professionalism and customer service from the point of booking, through to the end of the course surpassed my expectation. As soon as I easily booked the course on line, I received clear instructions and information about the course. Upon arrival I was welcomed and staff were there to answer any questions. We met our instructor J C, who who sorted us out with getting kitted up. After some boat theory we were out learning the practical stuff and getting to grips with handling the boat. There was plenty of time to practice and perfect our techniques. We also learnt about navigation, charts, radio procedure, tidal systems, man over board and loads of other power boat related guru knowledge. J C's level of instruction was on par with any other top level instruction I have ever received. I would genuinely look to specifically requesting booking her for any other courses that Lagoon Watersports offer in the future. If there is a course at Lagoon Watersports Brighton Marina, do not hesitate to book on with these guys. They will look after you and teach you everything you need to know and more. Booked a Jet Ski safari for my girlfriends birthday and they cancelled on me 15 min before the session after getting up at 6am and driving 1.5hrs. They cancelled due to supposed fog, however it was just cloudy. The visibility was about 2000m plus. It was just an excuse for them not to take us because they couldn’t be bothered. They did not try to reassess the situation and they were just purely lazy!!!! DO NOT EVEN BOTHER BOOKING WITH THEM. IT RUINED MINE AND MY GIRLFRIENDS DAY. As you can see from the images below the fog was not low lying at all and many other companies were going out sailing also. It was flat calm with no swell… Read more Written September 25, 2021

She was brilliant, bursting with enthusiasm and kept us busy all weekend. Even when the breeze dropped completely she had us practising docking or tying knots. When the wind picked up we were out and building confidence practising the basic turns and manoeuvres in all directions. I look forward to doing the second part. Thoroughly recommended. • Marine Accident Investigation Branch reports

Capsize of powerboat

Location: Near Brighton Pier, England.

Completed PE Summary: Unnamed powerboat

A short summary of the accident and action taken:

On 18 October 2007, a local sales office received a replacement propeller for a new powerboat, which had been purchased from the manufacturer several weeks beforehand. The manager tasked a local contractor to fit the new propeller to the outboard engine and to take the boat for a sea trial to assess its performance. The manager gave the contractor permission to take his friend with him on the sea trial. With the new propeller fitted, the powerboat left Brighton Marina at about 1230. Neither the contractor nor his friend wore a lifejacket, two of which were provided in the cabin.

The contractor, who was wearing a connected engine kill cord, carried out several straight runs and two wide turns. In preparing for the third turn, he reduced speed and trimmed the engine in. He then executed an “aggressive” turn to starboard, during which the boat rolled and capsized to port. Both men entered the water but they were able to hold on to the upturned hull and await assistance.

Solent Coastguard was alerted by an onlooker and the Brighton RNLI lifeboat was tasked to the scene. Meanwhile, the two men were recovered from the water by two jet skiers and the upturned powerboat was later towed ashore.

Action taken

The Chief Inspector has written to the following, strongly advising:

Dickies International

  • That all direct employees and contractors who take control of a powerboat, should receive appropriate recognised training in its safe handling and navigation. They need to be made aware of the potential for capsize and the required safe handling procedures, which need to be passed on to customers. The company should also review its safety policy entitled Safety Afloat by carrying out further risk assessments, and strengthen its control measures accordingly, especially with respect to the carriage of a VHF radio and the wearing of lifejackets.

Chantiers Bénéteau

  • To identify the capsize mechanism and provide clear and specific safe handling advice to recognise this in the Owner’s Manual for this class of vessel.

Royal Yachting Association

  • In its current revision of the RYA Powerboat Handbook, to include specific advice on the different handling characteristics associated with the various types of hull and/or propulsion units that may be encountered.
