Reviewed: Cruisers 46 Cantius
- By Tom Serio
- Updated: June 19, 2019
The Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius may not be the biggest Cantius model that the Wisconsin shipyard produces, but she’s full of surprises, sharing enough attributes with her bigger sisters— including the 60-foot Cantius flagship —that she’s able to deliver relaxation on multiple levels.
All the way aft, there’s a hydraulic swim platform with integrated steps that extend as the platform descends, creating a beach (or tender stowage). The transom has an electric grill and fridge, making it easy for the cook to dish freshly grilled fish up to the cockpit, which has seating for six to eight people on an L-shaped settee around a wooden table. The forward corners of the cockpit have flattop cabinets, with a Vitrifrigo fridge in one and an ice maker in the other. Stowage and cup holders fill out the cabinets.
The cockpit door has three glass panels, and the center panel opens to the salon. Or slide the center and starboard panels to port, and the aft deck and salon blend with an opening measuring 5 feet, 5 inches wide.
Step inside, and the galley is ready to serve those fore and aft. To port is an L-shaped countertop with a recessed two-burner Kenyon cooktop, a circular sink, a built-in Muave microwave, and drawers and cabinets. To starboard is an undercounter Nova Kool fridge/freezer. Keeping the appliances at counter height helps the salon to feel open with unobstructed sightlines from stem to stern.
The salon’s 32-inch TV is mounted on a swivel, turning 180 degrees and making it viewable from the salon or the aft deck seating. Mood-setting and other controls are near the TV, including light switches, a stereo, air conditioning, and 110-volt and USB outlets. Amidships, a double settee is to starboard and a dinette is to port on a raised platform, making it a great spot for outdoor views (while adding headroom to the belowdecks accommodations). The dinette’s settee measures almost 6 feet long and converts to a berth.
There’s 6-foot-7-inch headroom throughout the main deck, along with opening side windows that bring the outdoors indoors. The helm is to starboard with twin 12-inch Garmin multifunction displays . Low-profile rocker switches are on the console, with throttles, a joystick, tab controls and a Garmin display controller in the arm console. There’s a Rockford Fosgate wired-remote digital-media receiver for audio inputs. A cellphone charging pad is to port. Cruisers mounts the compass right in front of the leather-wrapped tilt steering wheel, as opposed to atop the dash. The helm seat is double wide with a bolster and footrest. A 9-foot-wide single-pane windshield means wide-open visibility forward, and a retractable sunroof is overhead.
For machinery checks, owner-operators can enter the engine room through an insulated in-deck hatch. A pair of 435 hp Volvo Penta IPS600 diesels with pod drives are easily accessible, as are the fuel and oil filters, generator, and ancillary systems. General maintenance should be completed without the need for chiropractic work, thanks to 54 inches of headroom and 42 inches of space between the motors. Access to the fuel and oil filters is on centerline.
Getting the 32,200-pound (dry weight) vessel up and charging felt effortless. Running with three crew, 130 gallons of fuel, and empty water and waste tanks, we putted around at 6.2 knots with the Volvo Pentas burning 2.3 gallons at 1,200 rpm. At 2,500 rpm, we saw 16 knots and a 22-gph burn rate. Jumping to 23.2 knots at 3,000 rpm had the diesels burning 30 gph.
Operating the 46 Cantius at about 23 knots, the hull ran true. The boat has a 16-degree transom deadrise, and there was no wavering or chine hopping. Going wide-open throttle at 3,550 rpm, the 46 delivered 31.1 knots at a fuel burn of 44 gph.
For cruising families or couples who want performance and fuel economy, along with an open layout for sharing the salt life with friends, the Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius is worth a look.
Rest and Relax
Belowdecks is an amidships master stateroom with a queen berth. Hullside windows bring in natural light, and the lower half of the windows tilt open for fresh air. There’s a portside chaise-style lounge and a 32-inch flat-screen TV; the en suite head has a separate shower stall and a walnut wood finish. A Splendide combination washer/dryer is an option. The VIP stateroom is forward with a walkaround queen berth on centerline, side windows, an overhead hatch and lockers. There’s also a 32-inch TV. Two underberth drawers measure 20 inches deep, 6 inches high and 26 inches wide apiece.
For transiting to the foredeck, there are grab rails along the house top. Side decks are sufficiently wide for walking without turning your body sideways, with side rails that extend all the way forward. On the foredeck is a U-shaped sun pad. Side loungers have tilt-up backrests. The center pad is aseat in a rectangular well; a teak table rises up and out from under the seat. The setup lets the sun-pad space convert to a sitting area that’s perfect for cocktails at sunset while on the hook. There’s an option for a foredeck sunshade, with four poles and a canvas that stow under the sun pads.

Cruisers Yachts GLS Series
The GLS Series from Cruisers Yachts ignites passion with daring design and scintillating performance. And with a GLS for sale somewhere nearby, the way you view the water is about to be forever changed.
Explore the GLS SERIES
Cruisers Yachts’ GLS line is at the very forefront of design and performance in the mid-sized, luxury yacht market. The bowriders — which range from 34 to 50 feet — are both fast and agile, but also have an incredible amount of interior volume. The blend of these seemingly at odds traits is directly owed to Cruisers Yachts’ talented workforce, which has the ability to draw from years of experience to handcraft world-class vessels.
The GLS series propulsion ranges from stern drive to triple 600 HP outboard engines hitting top ends well above a sizzling 50 mph. The boats also have beach doors — foldout sections of their gunnels that vastly increase the size of their swim platforms and the connection to the water. This feature greatly enhances a boat’s capabilities as an entertainment platform. GLS models also offer a level of fit and finish that is not seen anywhere else in this size and class of boat.
From the tight joinery in the accommodations level woodwork to the intricate stitching on the upholstery in the bow lounge, the craftsmanship one finds aboard a Cruisers Yachts GLS cannot be beat.

The Pros and Cons of Cruisers
By: Captain Bill Jennings
When a person buys a boat today, he or she must first decide the "type" of boat that most interests them. With the many specialized categories of boats currently available this is not as simple as it may seem. The more a boat is designed to fit into a specific category, the less efficiently it will work in a different category. To help boaters navigate through the realities of boat types, I am presenting a series of unsponsored advertisement-free articles that reveal some of the unmarketed characteristics of different boat types. Revealing these facts can help you, the boat buyer, select a boat type that matches your needs. In this article, we look at cruisers .
The first step in discussing cruiser applications is to be clear on the definition of this type of boat. The non-military definition of 'cruiser' is:
A boat capable of being used to both transport and provide comfortable sheltered accommodations for at least two people. A cruiser is larger than a 'walkaround,' but smaller than a full blown 'yacht.' We note that sailors would define 'yacht' as a boat with a sail, but for our discussion, I limit the definition to power-only vessels. Cruisers fall within a length range of 28 to 40 feet.
When you consider that a well equipped cruiser provides safe water transit while offering creature comforts such as weather protection, beds, galley, dining facilities, toilet, shower, television, air conditioning, and a lounge area -- they are a highly versatile boat type. Many couples and small families enjoy 24 hours a day on their cruiser, and travel to interesting destinations.
Only when we look more closely, do we begin to see the weak points that are found in some cruisers. Most of these concerns are related to their size. When designers try to replicate the amenities of a 55 foot yacht into a 30-something floorplan, it is only logical that things are going to get a bit crowded. For example, tall people will notice a shortage of headroom in all but the largest of cruisers. The limited space is also reflected in the seating capacity, which becomes more noticeable as guests arrive. On smaller cruisers, taking a shower can be an elbow thumping experience, and don't drop the soap. Without air conditioning, it can be too stuffy to sleep in the small berth and unless your cruiser is large enough to have a generator, you will need to run your electrical requirements off engine power or the battery. The addition of yacht-like features makes cruisers heavier than other boats of equivalent length, and heavier boats call for more horsepower. This translates to higher fuel consumption. Cruisers are usually kept in the water so you may also incur slip fees. A final critique of some cruiser models is their limited access to the foredeck. Small cruisers may have you climb through the windshield and even larger ones provide the narrowest of gunwales. This means that foredeck access can necessitate some fancy dancing by your crew as you approach a dock.
But this list of concerns can seem like minor speed bumps when you consider the enjoyment of the yachting lifestyle that cruiser boats can provide. But, you need to work through your acquisition process very carefully because small differences in length and amenities added coincide directly with huge differences in price. Yes, the larger the cruiser the more you will enjoy cruiser comforts, but because cruiser prices can jump higher per foot than most other boats your first step in purchasing is to determine a budget. Allow sufficient funds to add some of the cruiser options that you want. This budget process will give you a cruiser length with which to go cruiser shopping.
Cruisers in the 26 to 30 foot range with single engines, can generally be had for between $125k and $175k, but while towable they will still have most of the unloving characteristics noted above.
Your next level of cruisers are those in the 31 to 38 foot range that typically carry price tags over $350k. Cruisers of this size will have twin power to make docking easier. Adults will enjoy a more comfortable night's sleep in full sized double berths, and you will find features like a cockpit grill and opening skylights in the cabin. Full sinks and refrigerators become standard in the galley. Look for the cruisers with asymmetrical catwalks from the stern to the foredeck so at least one side of your boat provides safe passage. Cruisers in this price range are perfect for a weekend getaway.
If you move up to the top of the cruiser category, 38 feet and above, you leave most of the cruiser negatives in your wash. The line between cruisers and yachts becomes blurred, with only the price point being a possible negative --- around $600 to $900k. Cruisers of this size offer the interior space and amenities to satisfy the most particular owners. Retractable sunroofs and walkthrough access to the foredeck are common. You'll find private staterooms and even two private heads. There is open and comfortable space for socializing and often a hydraulic swim platform to carry a dingy or PWC.
No matter what cruiser size you target, in order for your boat to open up more space I would recommend specifying engines that are outside the boat by going with outboard power . This could mean twin 200 HP engines on the smaller cruisers and up to four 400 HP engines on the larger ones. Your dealer will give you horsepower recommendations based upon your speed expectations.
Here is another important cruiser buying tip: there is no shame in buying a used cruiser . Actually, most cruiser purchases are pre-owned so if your budget is short on obtaining the length you want, buying a used cruiser could be your answer.
To add some specifics, here are my 'consideration' ratings on cruisers.
Life Expectancy : Excellent. Generally speaking, a cruiser is used less than a general runabout or large bowrider. With less hours, they tend to remain in good condition longer. Even ones that are used regularly are often kept in a covered boathouse, or on a lift. The major manufacturers of cruiser boats are usually more experienced craftsmen than those for small boats, therefore cruisers are usually well built to begin with.
Storage: Depends. Great for two people, but in the small cruisers there is barely enough for four. There is just not enough square footage to build large cabinets and lockers, but having that cabin to shelter items can be most welcome.
Off-Season Storage : Tricky. For many boaters, their cruiser is their summer cottage. Preparing your boat for winter is more difficult than folding up a family tent. Consideration must be given to the number of cruiser features present and their ability to winter safely.
Ride Comfort : Better than average. A cruiser will weigh more than an average boat of the same length. That added weight delivers a more solid ride that is less impacted by choppy water. Just don't leave breakables on the galley counter.
Capacity : Depends. Both actual seating available and the feeling of spaciousness will totally depend on the size of your cruiser. If you are claustrophobic or tall, you had better be prepared to buy one of the larger cruisers.
Towability : Limited. Thirty feet is considered the largest cruiser you would want to tow.
Cost : Average. There are a good number of cruiser manufacturers in business, so between different lengths and differing qualities/amenities you should be able to find a cruiser to match your budget. The used market is also generally plentiful with cruiser style boats.
Maintenance: Tricky. Maintenance on a cruiser can be a handful. This is because they can have similar amenities to a full sized yacht, but because the workings are contained within smaller spaces it is more difficult to access and repair them.
Bottom Line: A boat in the cruiser category is perfect for an existing boater who is ready to do some exploring. You may want to travel through different waterways, check out some popular boating destinations, or just get away for weekends. I believe that some 'doll house' cruisers can lead to frustrations, so select a size that will provide the transportation and space you need. Once you know what cruiser will work for you, it's just a matter of waiting until the right cruiser shows up for you to purchase. #tips #boattypes #cruisers

2022 Cruisers Yachts 34GLS
- By Capt. Chris Caswell
- April 6, 2022
The new Cruisers Yachts 34GLS is the latest iteration of the popular GLS series from Cruisers Yachts, which persists in claiming that GLS stands for Grand Luxury Sport. But I like to think it stands for Great Little Ship. This yacht defines family fun—if you look up “family fun” in the dictionary, you’ll find a picture of the 34GLS. Well, not really, but you get the idea.
The 34GLS is aimed at day outings and occasional overnight adventures, and it has enough speed (45 mph) with twin Mercury Verado outboards to satisfy all the towed water-toy needs.
Outboards generally preclude a usable transom platform, but the 34GLS has two “wings” extending alongside the engines as well as a comfortably wide walkway forward of the outboards, with all the plumbing and connections hidden so no one will trip. Like the rest of the cockpit, the area is covered with SeaDek for a cushy nonslip surface.
Interior and Accessories
The cockpit seating is offset to allow a rear-facing seat to port, the outdoor galley console, and a settee with a back that flips to become either a companion seat or aft-facing lounge. To starboard is an L-shaped settee, also with a flipping back for facing aft or forming a sun pad when folded flat. Cruisers gets credit not just for two perfectly finished tables (standard), but also for providing dedicated stowage (in a bag for varnish protection).
The mini galley includes a sink, but be sure to order the optional grill, fridge or ice maker for serious outings, and maybe even the fridge drawer under the helm seat. A standard fiberglass hardtop covers the cockpit, and our boat had both the optional SureShade to stretch the sun protection and an opening sunroof.
The skipper gets a well-arranged throne with a bench seat (adult-plus-kid size), and a Simrad electronics package with twin 9-inch displays in an eyebrowed dash to prevent reflections.
The bow seating is via a passage to port, with a closing windshield and wind door to protect the cockpit. This is an area where parents worry, but Cruisers made the coamings high at 33 inches. The cockpit is even deeper at about 40 inches for safety.
There’s nothing unusual forward, with wraparound seats, a pedestal table that becomes a sun pad, and a 48-quart cooler. The forward-facing seats have flip-down armrests with beverage holders. The windlass ($7,355) tucks under a flush foredeck hatch, with push-button controls at the helm and at the bow.
Going below, I was impressed by the sliding screen door and usual fiberglass door. One night of dodging no-see-ums and you’ll also appreciate them. Cruisers managed to jigsaw all the important things into the living area, with a pair of settees that convert to a 77-by-48-inch double berth using the dining table, and our test boat had the optional fridge and microwave for morning coffee. A second cabin is just aft, with a single 6-by-3-foot berth tucked athwartships—perfect for a kid or mother-in-law.
A strong selling point for the 34GLS is the enclosed head with a Dometic electric flush toilet, and a counter with a vessel sink and Euro faucet. It’s a wet head with a wraparound shower curtain, a shower wand, and an opening port to vent the steam.
Cruisers also gets points for paying attention to details, such as the fully finished lockers. Lift a hatch and you find all the plumbing carefully secured and labeled in a white-finished bilge for easy cleaning. A sump handles the shower and sink so soapy water doesn’t go into the bilge, and Cruisers doesn’t cut any corners on construction with the 34GLS. The all-fiberglass hull is reinforced with rot-free foam and glass stringers, plus numerous molded sections for monocoque strength. I was also impressed by the deep gutters in the deck hatches, which should easily handle enthusiastic washdowns or downpours without water leaking belowdecks.
Our test boat had the standard Merc 300 Verados with Joystick Piloting, but you can up the ante to 350, 400 or even 450R outboards if you have a need for speed. For the Great Lakes, the 34GLS can also be fitted with Volvo Penta or MerCruiser sterndrives up to 350 hp each, but you’d lose the immense utility room under the cockpit sole. With outboards, that cavern can handle a 5 kW Kohler diesel generator, although our 34 boasted the inverter ($6,740) that can power the air conditioning ($6,235) for up to six hours.
The 34GLS has hydraulic trim tabs as standard, but the boat came up flat and fast during our test without needing a nudge from the tabs to get onto plane. Because we ran flat at speed, I suspect the tabs are there to balance the boat when Aunt Edna parks to one side.
The bottom was designed by Ocean Five naval architects, a growing force in production boats, and it sliced neatly through wakes and chop with its 21-degree transom deadrise without throwing spray everywhere. The 34GLS is fun to drive too, and the skipper is going to have people lined up saying, “My turn, my turn!”
If you’re looking around, check out the Scout 350LXZ ($551,000), which is a foot shorter but offers triple outboards.
Whether you’re entertaining a bunch of friends or getting away for a lazy weekend, the Cruisers 34GLS fulfills the promise of grand luxury sport; even better, it’s also a great little ship.
How We Tested
- Engine: Twin 300 hp Mercury Verado V-8s
- Drive/Prop: Outboard/16″ x 16.5″ Enertia 3-blade stainless steel
- Gear Ratio: 1.85:1 Fuel Load: 200 gal. Water on Board: 0 gal. Crew Weight: 400 lb
High Points
- Immense finished stowage throughout, including for large items such as fenders.
- Clearly labeled and user-friendly dash, with shifter and throttles, joystick, and trim-tab controls in the armrest.
- Wide walkway to the bow from the cockpit with high coamings.
- Deep hatch gutters with rubber seals and double drains.
- Needs more handrails for moving around the cockpit safely, and the strange knee-high rails on the seats are too low.
- Getting into the aft cabin past the stairs requires a bit of wiggling.

Re: Has anyone heard of "Cruiser Inc boats"? Cruiser Inc boats are generally very well made. I have been aboard several at my marina and am very impressed in both the quality and the design. Neverhome
Re: Has anyone heard of "Cruiser Inc boats"? Thanks for the info, do you know if the company still makes boats?
Re: Has anyone heard of "Cruiser Inc boats"? I am not sure but you can google the company to find out. They don't seem to advertise as much as the other brands. My main concern would be the condition of the engine. I have always had Mercruisers and found them for the most part to be pretty much bullet proof. Parts are easily available and just about any marine mechanic can work on them if you are not handy yourself. I have the 5.7 with a 2 barrel carb in my 2359 Trophy and it is adequate. It is fresh water cooled and has been used in salt water since I bought it new in 2002 and I have had no problems with it but I also have it serviced and tuned up after every season. Of course a bigger engine is always better as you have the option of using extra power if you need it and in some cases they are better on gas because they don't have to work as hard getting up on plane. As to the boat itself, you can do most of the upkeep on the hull and interior and most yards offer fiberglass work if you manage to hole the hull. If you like the boat, spend the money to have it surveyed. That will tell you if it is worth it and a survey is cheap insurance versus finding a major problem after it is yours. Neverhome

Re: Has anyone heard of "Cruiser Inc boats"? Around here the boats are fairly well thought of, but as with any boat, it comes down to how well it was cared for. We test drove several '85-'92 inboard Criusers and though we did not buy one, they seemed to be holding up great for their age.

Re: Has anyone heard of "Cruiser Inc boats"? Overall they are great boats. The only thing I have heard from owners of more recent years is some electrical connection problems. Apparently the connection plugs they use can be a little trouble on their wiring harness.

Re: Has anyone heard of "Cruiser Inc boats"? I own a 1998 Cruisers 3575. I love this boat. My best buddy have a 1998 37' Sea Ray. Although the Searay is a very popular boat, the Cruisers is a more stable boat. In 3' seas, it rides like the water is flat. To this day, I have never had any problems with the boat other than the normal problems that any boat would have. I have never had a manufactory or engine problem. If and when I upgrade, I will be looking for another Cruisers. I swear by them... Also, I agree, their website is horrible. Maybe they spent too much time on the boat and not enough on the website.
Capt'n Chris
Re: Has anyone heard of "Cruiser Inc boats"? They don't build them like they used to: Cruisers traces her origins to the summer of 1953 starting out as Cruisers, Inc. Her founders were six of the second generation Thompson family members. Ray, Glenn, Roy, Grant, Bob, and Ted Thompson, Jr. established Cruisers as a result to fill a niche for larger outboard cabin cruiser type boats. The corporation Cruisers, Inc. was created with the full blessing and cooperation of Thompson Boat. The synergy between the two corporations is evidenced in the initial actual cabin cruiser made by the two firms. In the late months of 1953 Cruisers, Inc. built a nineteen-foot cabin cruiser. She was a clinker hull suitable of using the largest of twin outboards then available. The advertising flyer proudly stated she was ?Thompson Designed? and built to ?Thompson Quality? by Cruisers, Inc. and sold by Thompson. The cabin boat was built specifically to show at the New York Boat Show in January1954. Another one was purported to have been built for display at the Chicago Boat Show, several weeks later. The model was dropped from the product line and those two boats were the only ones of the type built. No one knows what happened to them. From her inception in ?53 until the end of 1958 Cruisers and Thompson were working hand in hand. Another example of this cooperation was the 1955 Thompson Off Shore eighteen-footer. The exact same picture was used in the 1955 Thompson catalog as was used by Cruisers the following year in their literature to illustrate their Vacationer model. Ownership of Cruisers changed hands effective January 02, 1959 when brothers Roy H. and G. Grant Thompson gained complete control. From that point forward the firms competed with one another. As more and more builders introduced fiberglass boats, the markets for wooden watercraft were declining in the early 1960s. Cruisers was producing 3,000 boats annually in the early sixties. This dropped precipitously when only 800 were sold in the 1965 sales season. The only means to get back in the game was to make the leap from wood to reinforced fiber plastic technology.
