Hands-On Rolex Yacht-Master II Review

So, I got a YachtMaster II. But hear me out… It was an insanely, and undeserved gift (“the company you keep”, right?). This got me to thinking about a lot of Rolexes offerings , and brought me around to the idea that the Yacht-Master II, no matter how niche a complication, no matter how specific, no matter how big, no matter how ridiculous - Might be one of my favorite models - And I’m not just saying that because I didn’t actually make the purchase.

Let me clear the elephant in the room. That’s the “You’re just saying you like the watch because it was free” statement that is absolutely BOUND to shroud my DM’s after this goes live. And that’s fine, I expect it, I welcome it, and I recognize the privilege that I’m projecting here. However, I would like to clear the air on where this review is going to come from - I have had plenty, and I mean PLENTY of opportunity to buy, sell, handle, photograph, and write about Rolex in the past decade. While I have on occasion, I’ve never particularly found Rolex to be a terribly interesting brand to review. Incremental changes over decades and decades tend to run together, and very few of those changes are worth lengthy, wrist-time in order to trump the (literal) thousands of reviews on the internet already - So I’ve mostly passed up on writing any kind of in-depth article or review on the brand. I’ve always felt that was better left for the Rolex boys, who are probably more qualified than myself to write about them anyway.

That is, until I have been wearing this particular model for a decent period of time. I started to notice that so many of the Rolex Yacht-Master II reviews on the internet, have often come from people who are attempting to sell you the watch. With the exception of a few “Hands On” articles floating around, I have had a very difficult time finding an open and honest review of this particular watch from someone who has actually owned one, and has worn it for a significant portion of time. So that is what I’m going to attempt to do here. This is going to be a wordy, however, comprehensive review of the Rolex Yacht-Master II (Ref 116680) - Arguably the most polarizing modern watch Rolex has produced.

If you’ve been around Rolex circles for any serious amount of time, you’ll likely have heard that the Yacht-Master II is simply too large of a watch for Rolex to have made - And to be fair, it’s very big by Rolex standards. The watch is the only Rolex produced that measures in at 44mm with a significant 14mm thickness and is made of 904L Stainless Steel. So to the more introverted Rolex collector, this is probably not the watch for them. While this model is definitely heavy, I have never once felt this watch to be uncomfortable or a nuisance on the wrist.

I have seen a number of comments that the Yacht-Master II is too bulky and heavy, however I do not feel that is the case. In fact, my Omega Planet Ocean is only 42mm x 15.7mm, and feels much bulkier and heavier than the Yacht-Master II.

The case is alternating with polished and satin-finished and features a nautical blue ceramic bezel. The pushers are, as is Rolex’s MO, a perfect length. Even though I’m left handed, and therefore wear my watch on my right wrist, I had no issues with the pushers digging into my wrist, or catching on my sleeves. The rounded and tapered case, although thick, cleanly buffers between the oversized bezel and any sleeve you wish to pull over it. I live in Tampa FL, so I am always tucking it away under a sleeve… cause… I don’t want to get robbed in a parking lot.

The pushers are easy to use, cause it’s Rolex, and of course they are. The triple-lock crown screws down easy and fits tight against the case, so I never feel like there is any risk in the water - Even though the watch carries a 100m water resistance rating.

The bezel is often criticized for it’s ostentatious nature. I mean, there is no doubt what watch is on your wrist with the huge, bold, and easily seen “YACHT-MASTER II” etched into the bezel itself. The bezel function works with the movement (which we will get to in a minute), as it turns 90 degrees in order to program the indicators (which we’ll also get to). The matte finish with crescent grippers makes the bezel easy to use, and readily available when needed.

This is the ref. 116680, which means there were some moderate adjustments made to the dial by Rolex over the previous er… 116680 (Rolex opted not to change the reference number). Personally, I find them to be minimal, and unless you’re insanely familiar with the Yacht-Master II line of watches, will likely be largely unnoticed, but I feel it important to discuss anyway.

For starters, the indicators are not simply square all the way around the dial anymore. Instead of every indicator remaining the same shape and angle, the 12 o’ clock indice was changed to an elongated triangle to easily dictate the top of the watch. Additionally, the 6 o’clock indicator was changed to an elongated rectangle, again, to easily dictate it’s location. Is this likely to be a deal-breaker for Regatta enthusiasts when looking to time 60 second intervals with a flyback function? Probably not. But it does make the dial a lot more legible, and I suppose, a certain percentage more useful.

Additionally, the other major changes were too the handset. Instead of the heat treated blued handset of prior models, the 116680 features skeletonized hands with lumed tips and an added “mercedes” hour hand. This allows for the wearer to see the Regatta timer lap ring with minimal interruption - Although, I think the blue handset would have helped - The polished hands can get lost against the slick white dial in certain light. Lesser changes include some thickening of lines, a bit darker tint of blue, and some added lume.

Overall, the dial is exactly what you’d expect from Rolex. It’s superbly legible, displays the utility of the movement well, and is innately “Rolex”. The updates definitely add to the legibility, even when using the lap timer, however, I’ve never known a Rolex to really struggle in that department to begin with.

THE MOVEMENT:

Inside the Yacht-Master II is the Rolex Calibre 4161. The movement is formidable, and the functions make sense for the extremely specific times a captain would need to use it. Essentially, the “chronograph” functions as a 10 minute countdown sectioned off in “laps”. When activated, the movement counts the ten lap starting sequence of a regatta race.

Interestingly, because of the internal memory, the movement can be programmed for any position within the 1-10 sequence for even more precise timing. This can be done by rotating the “Command bezel” 90 degrees and pressing the start / stop pusher to adjust the position. Interestingly, Rolex boasts that it’s one of the first watches in the world to utilize a bezel in conjunction to the movement.

The 360+ part Calibre 4161 beats at 28,800 VpH, features a 72-hour power reserve, and Rolex’s Parachrom hairspring for better anti-magnetism.

THE BRACELET:

The watch comes on an Oystersteel bracelet with a pretty unique clasp feature that allows for the adjustment of the links to 5mm - or a half link. This was super handy for my wrist, because the watch sat just a hair too lose, but taking out a third link would cause the watch to flop around more than I’d like. Admittedly, I hadn’t had much experience with this feature, but learned on the fly how easy it was to use. Where the bracelet connects to the clasp, there is a little fold half link. You can either pull up and flip it back down to set it in place, or pull slightly back to release it. This either shortens, or lengthens the link. This is great for hot days when your wrist swells. And the added ability to do it quick, on the fly, and without tools was a huge bonus to the watches utility.

Obviously, there isn’t much improving on the Oyster bracelet. It’s insanely comfortable, it flexes perfectly when it needs to, it’s clasp is solid and doesn’t buckle (no pun intended) and it’s fit to the lugs is perfect for the watch.

The Yacht-Master II is very top-heavy, so it’s important for the bracelet to manage that efficiently, and this is Rolex we’re talking about, so it does. Are there times that swelling and moisture, and dirt / sand affect the comfort? Sure, but there’s nothing the bracelet can do to fix that.

CONCLUSION:

While, admittedly loud, I found myself leaning into the oversized and exaggerated nature of the watch more and more. Is it massive and recognizable? Yes. Obviously. Does it take away from the watch at all? No. I feel it compliments it. Rolex as a whole has a difficult time being identified without, it becoming your entire identity - If that makes any sense, and the Yacht-Master II case is one of the few (in my opinion) Rolex watches that comes with it’s own personality - even if that personality tends to get lumped in with the loud and obnoxiously rich people that tend to strive to own it.

As my first Rolex, I recognize that it’s not exactly the normal “First” for the brand, but I’ve grown to love the watch. In fact, I think it’s a staple in my collection. It’s hefty and legitimately feels like a sports watch worth wearing, and still classic and toned down enough to be a dinner watch. I don’t have much to fault the watch with that isn’t built into the foundations of what the watch is to begin with. I feel and criticism I could really throw at it would be met with “Yeah, we know, that’s the point”, and that just feels… well, pointless.

Rolex is presenting a new version of the Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 42. This nautical watch is introduced for the first time in RLX titanium – a particularly strong but lightweight alloy – and is fitted on an Oyster bracelet. The new version stands out for its technical satin finish – a satin finish with a visible grain, a feature of Rolex watches in RLX titanium – which extends to the middle case sides, the edges of the bracelet links and the sides of the clasp cover. The chamfered top edges of the middle case lugs have a high-sheen finish, while the crown guard is polished. With its bidirectional rotatable bezel fitted with a Cerachrom insert in matt black ceramic featuring raised and polished numerals and graduations, the Yacht-Master 42 in RLX titanium remains faithful to the aesthetics of the original model, unveiled in 2019. It is graced with an intense black dial in a fine satin finish, and its Oyster bracelet is equipped with the Easylink comfort extension link. The new version of the Yacht-Master 42 is equipped with calibre 3235, a movement at the forefront of watchmaking technology, enabling it to display the date as well as the hours, minutes and seconds. Like all Rolex watches, the Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 42 carries the Superlative Chronometer certification, which ensures excellent performance on the wrist.

THE CALL OF THE OPEN SEAS Launched in 1992, the Yacht-Master was designed specifically for navigators and skippers. Embodying the rich heritage that has bound Rolex and the world of sailing since the 1950s, this Professional-category watch provides a perfect blend of functionality and nautical style, making it equally at home on and off the water. An emblematic nautical timepiece, it is easily recognized by its bidirectional rotatable 60-minute graduated bezel made entirely from precious metal or fitted with a Cerachrom insert in high-technology ceramic.

RLX TITANIUM  RLX titanium is a grade 5 titanium alloy specially selected by Rolex. Like all titanium alloys, it is especially lightweight and is noted for its mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. Another characteristic of RLX titanium is the possibility of working it to give a polished or satin finish according to the brand’s specifications. Its high mechanical strength makes it complex to work with, and the decision to use it has required the introduction of special production processes.

HIGH-TECHNOLOGY CERAMIC Rolex played a pioneering role in the development of special ceramics for creating monobloc bezels and bezel inserts. Not only are these materials virtually scratchproof, their colours are also of a rare intensity and are resistant to environmental effects. In addition, thanks to its chemical composition, the high-tech ceramic is inert and cannot corrode. Rolex has developed exclusive expertise and innovative manufacturing methods that grant it complete independence in the production of these ceramic components. On the new version of the Yacht-Master 42, the bidirectional rotatable bezel is fitted with a 60-minute graduated Cerachrom insert in matt black ceramic. Its raised graduations and numerals are first moulded into the ceramic and then polished. The first 15 minutes are graduated minute-by-minute to allow time intervals to be read with great precision. The bezel can also be turned with ease thanks to its knurled edge, which offers excellent grip.

OYSTER CASE, SYMBOL OF WATERPROOFNESS  A paragon of robustness and reliability, the 42 mm Oyster case of the new Yacht-Master 42 is guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 100 metres (330 feet). The middle case is crafted from a solid block of RLX titanium. Its case back, edged with fine fluting, is hermetically screwed down with a special tool that allows only Rolex watchmakers to access the movement. The Triplock winding crown, fitted with a triple waterproofness system and protected by an integral crown guard, screws down securely against the case. The crystal, which features a Cyclops lens at 3 o’clock for easy reading of the date, is made of virtually scratchproof sapphire and benefits from an anti-reflective coating. The waterproof Oyster case provides optimal protection for the movement it houses. 

PERPETUAL CALIBRE 3235  The new version of the Yacht-Master 42 is equipped with calibre 3235, a movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex that was released in 2015 and has been fitted on this model since its launch in 2019. A distillation of technology, this self-winding mechanical movement delivers outstanding performance in terms of precision, power reserve, convenience and reliability.   Calibre 3235 incorporates the patented Chronergy escapement, which combines high energy efficiency with great dependability. Made of nickel-phosphorus, this escapement is resistant to strong magnetic fields. The movement is fitted with a blue Parachrom hairspring, manufactured by Rolex in a paramagnetic alloy. The hairspring offers great stability in the face of temperature variations as well as high resistance to shocks. It is equipped with a Rolex overcoil, ensuring the calibre’s regularity in any position. The oscillator is mounted on the Rolex-designed, patented high-performance Paraflex shock absorbers, increasing the movement’s shock resistance. The oscillating weight is now fitted with an optimized ball bearing. Calibre 3235 is equipped with a self-winding system via a Perpetual rotor. Thanks to its barrel architecture and the escapement’s superior efficiency, the power reserve of calibre 3235 extends to approximately 70 hours. 

OYSTER BRACELET AND OYSTERLOCK SAFETY CLASP  The new version of the Yacht-Master 42, made from RLX titanium, is fitted on an Oyster bracelet. Developed at the end of the 1930s, this three-piece link bracelet remains the most universal in the Oyster Perpetual collection and is known for its robustness. The Oyster bracelet of this new version of the Yacht-Master 42 features the Oysterlock folding safety clasp, which prevents accidental opening. It is also equipped with the Easylink comfort extension link, developed by Rolex, which allows the wearer to easily adjust the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm. The Oyster bracelet in RLX titanium also includes patented ceramic inserts – designed by the brand – inside the links to enhance its flexibility on the wrist and its longevity.

SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER CERTIFICATION Like all Rolex watches, the Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 42 is covered by the Superlative Chronometer certification redefined by Rolex in 2015. This designation testifies that every watch leaving the brand’s workshops has successfully undergone a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria, following the official certification of the movements by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC). The in-house certification tests apply to the fully assembled watch, after casing the movement, guaranteeing superlative performance on the wrist in terms of precision, power reserve, waterproofness and self-winding. The precision of a Rolex Superlative Chronometer is of the order of −2 /+2 seconds per day – the rate deviation tolerated by the brand for a finished watch is significantly smaller than that accepted by COSC for official certification of the movement alone. The Superlative Chronometer status is symbolized by the green seal that comes with every Rolex watch and is coupled with an international five-year guarantee.

For this reason, the Ring Command rotating bezel system was designed in a way so that it allows the wearer to set the regatta countdown to the desired time by rotating the bezel to the left by 90° and adjusting the easy-to-read red triangle hand to the desired position. Once the bezel is rotated back to its original position, the chronograph’s timer is locked. When this happens, the fly-back function of the chronograph allows the wearer to stop the running chronograph, reset it to the pre-set time between 5-10 minutes and start it again – all at a single press of the lower pusher. Rolex was thoughtful as ever: while the regatta timer’s setting can’t be messed up thanks to its locking by the bezel, the pushers are not locked by a stupid screw-down system (that wouldn’t belong on the Daytona either if they weren’t part of the recognized design). So while the Yacht-Master II is aptly water-resistant with its 100m (330ft) rating without screw-down pushers, the chronograph can be easily modulated on mark of the officials. All these are also incredibly useful features during the high-intensity moments of cooking pasta or boiling an egg – and it is here where I should add that the countdown can be set freely between 1 and 10 minutes on the Yacht-Master II, even if regatta races only need the 5-10 minute adjustability.

As recently as last year, Rolex has quietly restyled the Yacht-Master II by fitting what Rolex calls the Professional handset – and what us mortals often call the Mercedes hands. Prior to these, the YMII came fitted with stick hour and minute hands, and if its those that you liked better, well, I checked and there’s still plenty of brand new YMIIs on the market with those hands as well. It has to be said that the Professional hands perform here as they do on other Professional Rolexes (yes, that’s an official Rolex product category): the two main hands are easy to distinguish and, kudos to Rolex on this one, they don’t affect legibility either thanks to a few intelligent design choices.

First, the minute hand was skeletonized in a way so that its second half is hollow, therefore allowing for an easy and accurate reading of the regatta minute timer’s red triangle, should the two overlap. Although the hour hand is fixed to the column pinion above the red triangle hand, the latter is still large enough to stand out from underneath – as the circle wouldn’t overlap all of the triangle. Not as ideal as the two being the other way around with the regatta hand falling between the hour and minute hands, but I doubt this would cause any real issue.

I already mentioned how setting of the regatta timer works, but I did mean to add that setting it is either something you learn or won’t figure out. I wish I knew how many Yacht-Master II wearers were out there in the world right now who’d freak out if they were told the bezel on their watch could rotate. OK, that is an unfair assessment, so I’ll just tone it down to how many could set their regatta timer to 7 minutes immediately, without hesitation. I guess the percentage of those owners is about the same as that of those who know how to use the slide rules on their Navitimers, or those who at least once push their supercars to their limits. I’d imagine it’s a low, low percentage – which isn’t a bad thing or something to be mad about, just fun to think about.

On the wrist, the Yacht-Master II shows many faces. First of all, the material its case and bracelet are crafted from make a big difference. You can have the Yacht-Master II in all-Oystersteel and this is the least-expensive version with a retail price of around $19,000. Strangely, to my eyes at least, this all-steel model isn’t the least flashy version, because that’d be the Oystersteel-Everose gold Rolesor (Rolesor is Rolex-speak for two-tone). This $25k Rolesor version is one of the two pieces pictured in this article and it is this that I think is the least obtrusive one – because it combines the sensible message that two-tone sends, as opposed to the “look-at-me, I’m a big steel watch” vibe that the all-steel version seems to have going on.

Then things take a drastic, and I do mean drastic turn with the $44k all-yellow-gold version that makes you feel like you’re an aptly dressed extra in Wolf of Wall Street . Any all-gold Rolex is a statement watch, but while you can make a case for yourself wearing, say, a yellow gold Day-Date 40, this one right here is less of a President’s watch and more of a premiership footballer’s. There is something amusing about having a watch with this level of visual complexity and the ostentatiousness of yellow gold around the wrist. Still, as a practical joke, it’s not as good as this factory-bedazzled GMT , so yeah, you can always be one-upped, even within Rolex territory – so just get the two-tone. The end of the line is the piece with an all white gold bracelet and a platinum bezel that costs a good couple grand more than the yellow gold version.

With a properly sized bracelet –  not  as seen directly above – the two-tone, steel, and Everose gold versions make for a great everyday wearer, pretty much the same way an Audi R8 is a great everyday driver. The YMII is large at 44mm wide, but has a strangely good weight to it, especially in this configuration – the all-gold version is as heavy on the wrist as it is on the eyes.

At a time and age when people are buying perpetual calendars because “ do you even know how complicated it is ?” wearing a Yacht-Master II shouldn’t be as odd as it may at first appear. Its engineering is absolutely mind-boggling, more exotic, arguably more useful on a daily basis – for those who like the idea of getting their pasta al dente  with a $25,000 watch – and you can play with it at any given time, whereas touching a perpetual calendar the wrong way will make you wish you didn’t.

After all is said and done, the Yacht-Master II surprised me in a positive way and made me feel stupid for secretly disliking and ignoring it for so long. It’s a great piece of machinery with a styling to its case, bezel, and dial that can only truly be appreciated in the metal. It’s distinctly Rolex down to its last detail, but it’s also unlike any other Rolex ever. In the eerily classy steel-Everose combination, with its neatly labeled, blue ceramic bezel and crisp white dial with further Everose gold accents, it’s a visually pleasing watch that I wouldn’t mind wearing on a daily basis.

Now, my only worry is Rolex dropping this quirky, dedicated, and high-effort side and letting us all die without seeing a comparable exercise ever again. I am eager to see what their next unexpected, highly complicated piece is going to be. If you feel the same but don’t want to wait and have the money to spend, I’d recommend filling this void with the Yacht-Master II.

The watch can be used in regattas with various starting sequences. Fully automatic, equipped with a Perpetual rotor, the Yacht-Master II movement has a power reserve of 72hours. THE CASE Crafted from a solid block of 18 ct yellow or white gold*, the Yacht-Master II case has diameter of 44 mm. Equipped with a Triplock winding crown protected by shoulders, it has two pushers, one on either side of the winding crown. The start/stop pusher located at the two o’clock position starts and stops the countdown. The reset pusher located at the four o’clock position has three functions: programming, synchronising and setting the countdown. The innovation involves the interaction between the case and the movement, thanks to the Ring Command bezel, which is used for programming the duration of the countdown. The Yacht-Master II is guaranteed waterproof to 100 metres. THE RING COMMAND BEZEL The Yacht-Master II is equipped with a Ring Command bezel designed and developed by Rolex. Rotatable 90°, this innovation allows access to the programming function of the countdown, then to the locking of this programming. Although it is very complex from a watchmaking point of view, this interaction between the bezel and the movement makes the Yacht-Master II extremely easy to use. The Ring Command bezel is available in two versions: –with a blue ceramic disc having numerals engraved in yellow gold for the 18 ct yellow gold version* –in one-piece platinum with raised numerals for the 18 ct white gold version* THE DIAL The hour and minute hands are fixed in the centre of the Yacht-Master II, while the seconds hand is at the six o’clock position. The countdown counter located between eight o’clock and four o’clock positions and the countdown seconds hand (red hand in the centre) show the time remaining before the start of the regatta. Particular attention was paid to its legibility so that it can be easily read at a glance. THE BRACELET The Yacht-Master II features an Oyster bracelet with an Oysterlock clasp and an Easylink comfort extension link. FUNCTIONS The functioning of the Yacht-Master II is very simple. With one hand, the user can rapidly programme the countdown. Likewise, he can start, stop, set or synchronise it, while it is in progress, to the official countdown with a simple press of a pusher. 1. TIMING THE START OF A REGATTA Press the start/stop pusherto start the countdown. At the end of the countdown, the minute hand stops by itself at 0. The seconds hand continues to turn. 2. SYNCHRONISATION OF THE COUNTDOWN (IF NECESSARY) At the time of the official signal, sound or visual : Press the reset pusher briefly and firmly. The minute countdown hand repositions itself to the nearest minute, while the seconds countdown hand returns to 0. When the reset pusher is released, the minute countdown hand and the seconds countdown hand are automatically activated. 3. STOPPING THE COUNTDOWN Press the start/stop pusher. 4. SETTING THE COUNTDOWN Make certain that the countdown is stopped. Press the reset pusher. The minute countdown hand returns to the minute programmed at the last setting and the seconds countdown hand returns to 0. The countdown is ready to be started. 5. PROGRAMMING THE COUNTDOWN First, make certain that the countdown is stopped. Turn the bezel 90° counterclockwise. The inscription Yacht-Master II should be aligned with the winding crown. This locks the start/stop pusher. Press the reset pusher. You will hear a click. The pusher remains depressed. Unscrew the winding crown to position 1, without pulling on the stem. (The same as for manual winding) Position the hand at the desired minute by turning the winding crown in the winding direction. The minute countdown hand moves from 0 to 10 minutes by increments of one minute. At 10 minutes, if the user continues to turn the crown, the hand returns to 0. Return the bezel to its initial position by rotating it 90° clockwise. You will hear a click. This returns the reset pusher to its initial position and unlocks the start/stop pusher. Push down and screw down the winding crown. The countdown is ready to be activated according to the time programmed. * The Yacht-Master II models are in 18 ct gold (750)

The Rolex Batman Origins: GMT-Master Collection History

When examining the history of the Rolex GMT-Master the Rolex GMT-Master Reference 6542 started it all.  The first model set a new standard in functionality with its distinctive fourth hand and immediately recognizable bezel. Its design was both practical and stylish, featuring a two-tone bezel in blue and red which earned it the nickname “ Rolex Pepsi .” The materials used in the bezel have evolved over the years, from Bakelite initially to anodized aluminum, and most recently to Cerachrom, Rolex’s proprietary ceramic, which is known for its durability and fade resistance. This reference was also worn by James Bond in the movie Goldfinger.

Over the decades, the Rolex GMT-Master has undergone various updates and refinements in design and technology, leading to the introduction of the Rolex GMT-Master II 16760 in 1983, which quickly earned the nickname “ Rolex Fat Lady .” This new iteration allowed for the independent setting of the hour hand without disturbing the minute and seconds hand, enhancing the functionality for travelers moving between multiple time zones.

Rolex Batman Release Date: The First Of Its Kind

When the Rolex GMT-Master II ref. 116710BLNR (Rolex Batman) was released at Baselworld 2013, the watch community paid attention. Not only was the blue and black bezel a contemporary and handsome iteration of the dual-toned bezel that we’ve come to know and love from the GMT-Master collection, but it was also the first of its kind.

Rolex had already been Cerachrom (its proprietary ceramic alloy) for bezels for about ten years, but it wasn’t until the Batman GMT that the company was able to use this tricky material to create a two-tone bezel. In fact, prior to the release of the blue-black bezel, Rolex had officially stated that it could only produce monochromatic Cerachrom bezels due to how difficult it was to work with this ceramic material.

However, Rolex eventually achieved a breakthrough and the result was a rich and saturated, bi-color bezel that is both much stronger and more fade-resistant than its aluminum counterparts. The “BLNR” portion of the “Batman” reference number is short for “Bleu Noir,” which is French for “Blue Black.”

Not only was the original Batman the first bi-color ceramic bezel, but it was also the only one available on a stainless steel GMT-Master II watch for several years.

Rolex Batman 116710BLNR: 2013-2018

In addition to its bezel, there are other defining elements of the original Rolex Batman ref. 116710BLNR. The watch itself is built off of the Rolex 116710 , which debuted in 2007. This GMT-Master came with new features like the (then brand new) Caliber 3186 movement with a smoother-operating 24-hour hand and a Paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring.

It also included a new bezel mounting and an upgraded Triplock screw-down crown for improved water resistance. The 116710BLNR, like the all-black bezel ref. 116710LN, also featured a ‘Maxi’ dial with larger hands hour markers; however, the Batman version uniquely features a blue 24-hour hand to match the bezel. The GMT-Master ref. 116710BLNR is paired exclusively with an Oyster bracelet, complete with an Oysterlock clasp fitted with the Easylink extension system.

Rolex Batman 126710BLNR: 2019-Today

In 2019, just six years after its original release, the Rolex Batman got its first upgrade with the introduction of the Rolex 126710 . Although there were several upgrades inside and out, the most talked-about update was its bracelet. 

Unlike the 116710BLNR, which came equipped with the three-link Oyster bracelet, the newer 126710BLNR was paired with a dressier five-link Jubilee bracelet (also furnished with a folding Oysterlock safety clasp and the Easylink 5mm extension link.) The dressier nature of the newer blue and black GMT watch caused some to nickname it the “Batgirl” instead of the “Batman.”

While some people appreciated this elegant update to the fan-favorite Batman GMT-Master II, others still favored the Oyster bracelet, saying that it went against the inherent sportiness of the GMT-Master collection. However, it’s important to remember that Rolex made the Jubilee bracelet available on vintage and older GMT-Master watches too, so there’s historical precedent there.  Either way, the all-new Jubilee bracelet helped differentiate this new generation of Rolex GMT watches from the brand’s various other Professional watch collections.

Yet, those who were partial to the Oyster bracelet didn’t have to wait too long; Rolex introduced the Oyster bracelet as an option with the GMT-Master II 126710BLNR in 2021. So now, fans of the Rolex Batman can choose between an Oyster or a Jubilee bracelet. 

Beyond the new Jubilee bracelet, the case of the 126710BLNR GMT-Master II was also redesigned with slimmer lugs and profile for a slightly more refined feel on the wrist. Technically speaking, it’s the same 40mm case diameter, but the 126710BLNR was designed to feel a bit thinner and more rounded on the wrist, while the case of the ref. 116710BLNR is a bit more angular and squared-off in its shape. 

Another one of the most essential upgrades of the latest Batman (or Batgirl, whichever you prefer) is the new-generation Caliber 3285 movement with an increased power reserve of 70 hours (compared to the previous 48 hours). If you look closely at the dial of the 126710BLNR, you’ll spot the Rolex crown in-between “Swiss” and “Made” to denote the new movement. 

Rolex Batman Options

In less than a decade of the history of the blue-and-black GMT, Rolex has made three distinct versions of the Batman:

• GMT-Master II ref. 116710BLNR with Caliber 3186 and Oyster Bracelet
• GMT-Master II ref. 126710BLNR with Caliber 3285 and Jubilee Bracelet ( Rolex Batgirl )
• GMT-Master II ref. 126710BLNR with Caliber 3285 and Oyster Bracelet

The Jubilee bracelet option is slightly more expensive at retail than the Oyster bracelet edition; $10,750 sticker price compared to $10,550. 

However, like all stainless steel Rolex watches, the Batman is not an easy model to find (read: virtually impossible) at authorized dealers. Therefore, due to strong demand for the watch, expect to pay at least $19,000 for a current-production BLNR on the secondary market and well over $17,000 for the discontinued Rolex Batman.

Regardless of which Rolex Batman you prefer, the blue and black colorway is a fantastic addition to the GMT-Master pilot watch lineup. It became a success immediately and we have no doubts that it’ll continue to be one of the brand’s most popular options for the foreseeable future.

Oyster vs Jubilee: Which Rolex Bracelet Should You Choose?

What’s the difference between the two most iconic watch bracelets in the world, and which is right for you?

You’ve decided to take the plunge and get yourself a Rolex . Or, maybe you just put your name on a waiting list for your dream watch. Even if you’ve already got the model and exact variant in mind, though, you still might be faced with an important #richpeopleproblems choice: Oyster or Jubilee bracelet?

Not every Rolex watch comes with this decision, and these aren’t the only bracelet/strap styles the brand makes. But they’re the two bracelets most people are most likely to be choosing between. Getting a GMT Master II ? A Datejust ? A Sky-Dweller? You’ll have to take your pick.

Another reason it’s good to understand the differences between these two iconic bracelet styles is that other brands offer similar bracelets, as well — particularly the Oyster, which is the de facto tool watch bracelet style for many a brand.

So what are the differences between Oyster and Jubilee bracelets? Is one better than the other? A lot comes down to style, purpose and preference, but here’s what you’ll want to know in making any decision.

Jubilee is the swankier option

The Jubilee bracelet is so named because it was introduced on the Datejust at a jubilee event for Rolex’s 40th anniversary in 1945. The Jubilee is a five-link bracelet with its outer links brushed on top, and its three inner links mirror-polished.

With shorter links, and more of them, however, a complicated look makes it stand out, and it’s the classic choice for a model like the Datejust — that’s made for genteel activities more than rough-and-tumble ones. It’ll make a watch feel more dressy and a bit more flashy compared to the no-nonsense vibes of the Oyster, and that includes sporty models. Rolex sports watches are today fully prestige items, so why not wear them as such?

The Jubilee is currently offered as an option on the Datejust, the GMT-Master II and the Sky-Dweller, with the latter being your only choice if you want a full-gold Jubilee, as those were introduced by Rolex at Watches and Wonders 2024 . The Datejust and GMT-Master II both offer steel and two-jone Jubilees, depending on the reference.

All three watches — Datejust, GMT-Master II and Sky-Dweller — are also available on an Oyster, making them the only watches where you’ll actually need to decide between the two bracelet styles.

Oyster is the sportier, simpler, everyday option

The Oyster bracelet was introduced in the 1930s (and later patented by Rolex) and its sturdy three-link construction embodies the old-school tool-watch side of Rolex’s personality. On some models, like the Submariner, all three links are totally brushed for a more utilitarian feel. On others, like the GMT-Master II and Daytona , only the bracelet’s outer links are brushed while the center links are polished to add some luxury sparkle.

The Oyster is the more understated option and is most associated with the brand’s sporty “Professional” models. It’s perfect for watches like the Submariner — and is, in fact, the only option for the Sub along with the Explorer, Explorer II, Oyster Perpetual, Air-King, Sea-Dweller and Deepsea.

It can can also imbue something like a dressy Datejust or Sky-Dweller with a pragmatic vibe that’ll make it more versatile and easy to wear for years and in many situations. The Oyster is by far Rolex’s most common bracelet option, and the only models that don’t offer an Oyster are the Day-Date and the 1908 dress watch , which only comes on a leather strap.

The Jubilee is slightly more expensive

More complicated to produce, the Jubilee tends to command a price premium over the Oyster of a couple hundred bucks. (On a steel GMT-Master II, the difference is exactly $200.) A Jubilee bracelet arguably makes a watch look more expensive, too. As long as your spending Rolex money in the first place, though, you should get exactly what you want, and this probably won’t be a deal breaker — but it’s one element of which you should be aware.

Many consider the Jubilee to be especially comfortable

The Oyster is very comfortable, but the Jubilee’s smaller links help it curve more precisely to the wrist, allowing it to better “hug” the wrist. It might be merely anecdotal, but Rolex owners often cite the Jubilee’s exceptional comfort as a primary reason to prefer it over the Oyster.

Don’t forget about the clasp

Different Rolex models come with different bracelets, and they can be fitted with specific clasps. Since there’s no option to pair the bracelet you want with a certain clasp, this is simply an element of Rolex bracelets to be aware of when weighing their pros and cons.

The Jubilee bracelets on the Datejust and Sky-Dweller are only available with an Oysterclasp, the most basic of Rolex’s folding clasps, while the Jubilees on the GMT-Master II comes with an Oysterlock clasp, which is more secure against accidental opening.

Oyster bracelets in Rolex’s “Classic” line — Datejust, Oyster Perpetual and Sky-Dweller — again come with Oysterclasp, while the “Professional” models — Air-King, Explorer, Daytona and GMT-Master II — get an Oysterlock. The aquatic Professional watches — Submariner, Sea-Dweller, Deepsea and Yacht-Master — boast Glidelock clasps on their Oyster bracelets, which incorporate an on-the-fly micro-adjustment feature.

Other Rolex bracelet styles

In addition to the Oyster and Jubilee, Rolex makes two other bracelet styles: the President, which is a rounded three-link bracelet only available with the Day-Date (and hence only available in precious metal).

Then there’s the Oysterflex, a black rubber strap with a titanium-nickel core that’s available on certain precious-metal references of the Daytona, Yacht-Master and Sky-Dweller. The Sky-Dweller offers the most bracelet options of any Rolex model and is the brand’s only watch to offer the choice of an Oyster, Jubilee or Oysterflex.

In the Moscow region there is a small cozy town Elektrostal. Its sights for the most part have no historical value due to the fact that the city has a relatively small history. But for a visiting tourist or city dweller, they will be of interest. There is something to see, where to go to have an exciting leisure time.

Today the population of the city is 158 thousand people. Until the beginning of the 20th century there were several small workers' settlements here. After the opening of the electrometallurgical and equipment factories, the place began to be called the natural boundary of Calm. The construction of the railway made this settlement accessible, and workers and families flocked here to earn money. In 1925, the station was named Elektrostal, and the rapid increase in population allowed the village to receive the status of a city.

The founder of the city is a prominent Russian industrialist Nikolai Vtorov. It was he who opened the plant here, creating, in fact, a city-forming enterprise that is still operating. In Soviet times, it was a closed facility, and it was not easy to get to work here.

Today Elektrostal is a promising industrial city with a great future and a heroic past. It bears the proud name "City of Military and Labor Glory".

Those who come to the city by train are met by a monument to the metallurgist. It was installed in November 2017 for the 100th anniversary of the Elektrostal plant. The attraction is made in the style of constructivism. The monument quickly won the love of the townspeople, because this city is supported by ordinary workers.

Elektrost altsy and the founding father of the plant, Nikolai Vtorov, are honored. In 2002, a monument was opened in honor of him, which became a landmark of the city of Elektrostal. The bronze sculpture is installed on the site where once stood a monument to the leader of the world proletariat, V. I. Lenin. Times change, characters change. Today, the plant, founded a century ago, is the largest in Russia. Vtorov himself, whose fortune was estimated at 60 million rubles in gold, according to Forbes magazine, was the owner of the largest capital at the beginning of the century. He was a banker, an industrialist, an entrepreneur, a man of action.

The monument was erected byinitiative of the townspeople who wished to perpetuate the monument to the great man.

One of the popular places for spending weekends and evenings among citizens and guests of the city is the Park of Culture and Leisure. Rolex achieved perfection when it turned its attention to redefining the purpose and functionality of the bezel. Typically, a bezel operates independently from the internal mechanism; however, the Ring Command bezel in the Yacht-Master II regatta chronograph operates in conjunction with it.

As a mechanical component linked to the movement, the bezel literally acts as the key to the programmable countdown, allowing it to be set and synchronised to the sequence of race start times. Complex in design, but simple in use, it is functionally beautiful.

A characteristic aesthetic

The Yacht-Master II is equipped with a new dial, and new hands that are characteristic of Rolex Professional models, enhancing legibility and sharpening its aesthetic appeal. The dial now features a triangular hour marker at 12 o’clock and a rectangular hour marker at 6 o’clock for more intuitive reading of the watch.

A luminescent disc on the hour hand clearly distinguishes it from the minute hand. The Yacht-Master II’s countdown can be programmed for a duration of between 1 and 10 minutes. The programming is memorized by the mechanism so that at a reset it returns to the previous setting. Once launched, the countdown can be synchronized on the fly to match the official race countdown.

RPV and steam generators delivered to Rooppur unit 2

A VVER-1200 reactor vessel and four steam generators for unit 2 of the Rooppur NPP under construction in Bangladesh have been delivered to the site, ASE announced on 10 August. ASE, Rosatom's Engineering Division, is the general contractor for the plant. The heavy equipment of the unit 2 reactor compartment (reactor pressure vessel (RPV) - 333.6 tons; the steam generator - 340 tons) was manufactured at the Atommash plant in Volgodonsk, a branch of the AEM-technologies (part of Rosatom’s mechanical engineering division, Atomenergomash).

It took more than two months to transport the cargo. From the Atommash site, the equipment was transported to the special berth of the Tsimlyansk reservoir in Volgodonsk, loaded onto barges and delivered to Novorossiysk port by waterway. The sea route of the equipment from Novorossiysk on the cargo ship, Anna, to the Bangladesh seaport of Mongla - through the Black Sea and the Suez Canal - was about 14,000 kilometres.

Manufacture of the VVER-1200 reactor vessel took more than two years and all operations were carried out with the direct participation of representatives of the authorised organisation, the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) and the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (BAERA). In October last year, the RPV and steam generators for Rooppur 1 were delivered to Bangladesh. It is planned to install the RPV in September. Rooppur NPP is being built by Rosatom with two VVER-1200 reactors. Rooppur 1 is currently scheduled to start operating 2023, followed by Rooppur 2 a year later.

Meanwhile, a high-ranking delegation from Bangladesh on 11 August visited Rosatom’s Mashinostroitelny Zavod (MSZ - Machine-Building Plant), in Elektrostal, Moscow Region, part of Rosatom’s Fuel Company TVEL. The delegation included Minister of Science and Technology Yafesh Osman, BAEC Chairman Sanovar Hussein, and the head BAERA, Muzammel Haq. TVEL will supply nuclear fuel for both VVER-1200 power units a Rooppur NPP until the end of their service life.

This Oyster Perpetual Datejust 31 in Oystersteel and yellow gold features a champagne colour, diamond-set dial and a Jubilee bracelet.

Champagne-colour dial, a watchmaking technique.

This dial features diamonds in 18 ct gold settings. The sunray finish creates delicate light reflections on many dials in the Oyster Perpetual collection. It is obtained using masterful brushing techniques that create grooves running outwards from the centre of the dial.

Light is diffused consistently along each engraving, creating a characteristic subtle glow that moves depending on the position of the wrist. Once the sunray finish has been completed, the dial colour is applied using Physical Vapour Deposition or electroplating. A light coat of varnish gives the dial its final look.

Fluted bezel

A rolex signature.

The Rolex fluted bezel is a mark of distinction. Originally, the fluting of the Oyster bezel had a functional purpose: it served to screw the bezel onto the case helping to ensure the waterproofness of the watch.

It was therefore identical to the fluting on the case back, which was also screwed onto the case for waterproofness, using specific Rolex tools. Over time, the fluting became an aesthetic element, a genuine Rolex signature feature. Today the fluted bezel is a mark of distinction, in gold on this Datejust 31.

Yellow Rolesor
