ABACO 40 Designer Comments

Conceived as a stylish but practical day cruiser with accommodation for occasional longer ventures, the Abaco 40 finds favour with those who want fine sea keeping and performance in a boat with classic aesthetics.

The hull configuration, which utilizes broad chine flats aft on a modified deep vee form was first proven in a 39 footer built by Bruckmann in 1994. The hull type gets on a level plane at 12 knots and is extremely fuel efficient from the mid teens on up. Stability and an easy ride and motion are also characteristic of this form. The Abaco 40 is powered by a single Cummins 670 HP diesel and cruises in the low 20 knot range with a top speed of approx. 30 knots. The single propeller and rudder are protected by a skeg which also aids this hull type's well known excellent tracking ability. The Abaco 40 is also available in twin engine pod drive form with a top speed in the high 30's.

Given the purpose of the design, the accommodation length given over to the cockpit and salon/bridge deck is intentionally large. The facing settees in the salon are convertible to berths should that be necessary and the large cockpit seats provide a fine platform for putting one's feet up while reading in the shelter of the pilot house roof overhang. The seats, as in a sailboat cockpit, also provide plenty of stowage space. If a fishing or open cockpit is required, these seats can be eliminated. The machinery space located under the salon is accessed by large hatches in the sole and from forward by raising the steps that lead below. The ample galley on the port side has excellent air and light, being open overhead to the pilothouse windshield. The head and shower compartments are located to starboard, forward of the helm station. A vee berth cabin with bureau, hanging locker' and 'aircraft lockers' are forward. An island double can be substituted for the v-berth.

The Abaco 40 is being built on a limited series basis by Bruckmann Yachts of Mississauga, Ontario. The hull and deck are of foam cored FRP construction. The Bruckmann yard has built an enviable reputation for attention to construction and system details as well as aesthetic sense in fit and finish. As in other projects, that ability combined with the use of modern design with good classic styling have produced a boat of real appeal to the knowledgeable boater.

Bruckman 65

bruckmann sailboat

The Bruckmann 65 motorsailer from the board of designer Mark Ellis looks like it was created to cruise two people in extreme comfort. With a beam of 18 feet carried well aft there’ll be plenty of room to keep a couple happy living aboard full time. Of course, a deckhand could help take care of maintenance and perform the heavy work of coming to and leaving docks on a boat that’s going to weigh nearly 100,000 pounds when it’s full of gear, fuel, and water.

The pilothouse/saloon is on the same level as the large cockpit so those inside can easily socialize with those outside. There’s also an inside steering station for when you just have to go sailing on a rainy day.

Down three steps, the galley, to port, looks like it will have room enough to create even the most elaborate meals. Opposite are a desk and an L-shaped seating area that the builder’s literature says will be used as a library or a study. Forward, to starboard, is a large guest cabin with a head and sink en suite; across the passageway is a large head and shower. A cabin with upper and lower berths is just forward of that, and in the forepeak is the large owner’s cabin with an island queen berth and another big head and shower.

On deck, the house is low and long until the pilothouse rises aft. The drawings show an inflatable dinghy stored on the aft part of the pilothouse-presumably the boom serves as a hoist. A built-in swim platform extends the waterline a few feet aft of the transom, which has a door let into it for access.

The rig carries a substantial sail plan, so the boat should sail well. I haven’t seen the underwater plans, but I’ve known Mark Ellis to design cruising boats that show a fair turn of speed, and with it’s long waterline, the Bruckmann 65 shouldn’t be any different.

When there’s no wind, a 250-horsepower John Deere diesel will provide the impetus, and a powerful bow-thruster will assist maneuvering in tight quarters.

The Bruckmann 65 is expected to sell for $2.3 million US.

A Sailboat we Love: Bruckmann Daysailer 42

bruckmann-daysailer-42

A split personality, the Bruckmann Daysailer 42, designed by Zurn Yacht Design , may readily carry upwards of eight individuals for an excursion around the bay, and yet she is equally adept as an overnighter. In either instance, she will be a true performer and head-turner, as exhibited by her low profile, aggressive sail plan, and performance-oriented shoal draft keel.

The weather deck of the Bruckmann Daysailer offers a wide, uncluttered working environment for tending to all of the vessel’s needs, even in the most adverse conditions. Only a low-profile raised cabin house interrupts the spacious deck forward to accommodate guests below.

Spars are constructed of economical aluminum with carbon fiber available as an option to achieve the maximum in strength-to-weight performance. All control lines are led to the aft cockpit where a single driver can control all aspects of fine-tuning the sails.

The interior furthers the smart design features and quality components found on deck. Upon entering the cabin house, the light service galley on port provides guests with such amenities as 12VDC refrigeration, microwave, stainless steel sink and cabinetry for stowing all necessary supplies.

The Bruckmann Daysailer is a confident daysailer and capable performance yacht. She may readily carry upwards of eight guests for an excursion around the bay, and yet she is equally adept as an overnighter for a cruising couple. In either instance, she’s a true performer and head turner, as exhibited by her low profile, aggressive sail plan and performance-oriented shoal draft keel. Characterized by a clean deck layout, commodious cockpit, inviting interior, and lightweight composite construction, the Bruckmann Daysailer is an extremely versatile sailing yacht, capable of tackling whatever task the day whips up before her.

Exterior The weather deck offers a wide, uncluttered working environment for tending to all of the vessel’s needs, even in the most adverse conditions. A low-profile cabin house sits atop the spacious deck forward to accommodate guests below. The aft cockpit offers a secure vantage point from which to observe and adjust all aspects of trim and course heading. All control lines are lead to the aft cockpit where a single driver can control all aspects of fine-tuning the sails with electric and hydraulic systems.

Interior The interior works to complement the smart design features and quality components found on deck. Upon entering the cabin house, the light service galley on port provides guests with such amenities as refrigeration, microwave, stainless steel sink and cabinetry for stowing all necessary supplies. To starboard is a commodious head with sink and storage. Five-inch thick cushions provide comfort for sitting or sleeping while six opening ports and two opening deck hatches allow natural lighting and abundant ventilation. A centerline table is available for interior dining. Forward of the settees are end tables and hanging lockers and the forepeak may be fitted with a V-berth if so desired.

Construction The E-glass and Core-Cell® hull and deck are built using the highest quality stitched fabrics and vinylester resins resulting in an extremely durable and light structure. The interior joiner work is comprised primarily of fine, hand-selected, gloss varnished mahogany trim over Formica® laminated bulkheads and cabinetry, accented by Corian countertops and a traditional teak and holly sole. All hardware is stainless steel.

Bruckmann 50

Bruckmann 50 is a 51 ′ 1 ″ / 15.6 m monohull sailboat designed by Mark Ellis and built by Bruckmann Yachts starting in 2004.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

DESCRIPTIONS

Bruckmann 50 MKII

"The Bruckmann 50, designed by Mark Ellis, has been highly praised for its sailing ability and handsome appearance as well as for its functional and expansive accommodations. It has proven to be, first and foremost, a swift and balanced bluewater sailer with the added advantages of excellent speed under power and amenities far beyond those found on most sailing cruisers. Cruising comfort aboard the Bruckmann 50 is greatly enhanced by a large pilothouse which encloses an airy salon and protects a second helm station from the elements." ~ Bruckmann Yachts

Construction

  • Hull Core-Cell cored with solid molded in Vinylester resin throughout, solid fiberglass in areas of through hulls, struts, shafts, rudder post and centerline
  • Deck is single-piece Core-Cell cored fiberglass molded with non-skid pattern on working surfaces; solid fiberglass and aluminum backup plates on all through deck fittings
  • Fiberglass roving and unidirectional reinforcements over foam floors with limber holes
  • Deck flange bolted and bonded to hull flange
  • Cast lead alloy ballast

"The Bruckmann 50 shows handsome lines and great performance under both sail and power, intrinsic qualities that will assure this yacht's appeal for a very long time to come. The hull shape of the Bruckmann 50 features a long waterline with a balanced distribution of underwater volume. This, coupled with a long flat run aft enables the yacht to enjoy high speeds under both sail and power." ~ Bruckmann Yachts

Swim Platform/Transom

The swim platform on the MKII is what distinguishes her from the MKI. This feature not only offers a great space to enjoy the water from, land/launch your tender from, enter/exit the boat from/to the dock, but it also offers additional waterline and buoyancy to the Bruckmann 50 making the boat more efficient and adding to her over all performance. Along with this, the area inside of the swim platform/floatation box also adds significant additional storage for toys and equipment.
