Monsters of Yacht Coming to the Mountain Twilight Concert

The Monsters of Yacht, a Nashville-based tribute band that specializes in the soft-rock sounds of the ’70s and ’80s, will headline this year’s Mountain Twilight Concert on Playfield Park at 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10. One of Big Canoe’s favorite annual events, this edition of the outdoor show is part of Big Canoe’s ongoing 50th-anniversary programming.

Bob Knysz and the Big Canoe All-Star Band will open the show and introduce “Livin’ Right,” a tune he co-wrote about Big Canoe. Read more about the back story of Knysz’s tribute song to our community here .

In case you were unfamiliar with yacht rock, this musical flavor refers to a style of late ’70s and early ’80s pop rock that includes the likes of Christopher Cross’ “Sailing,” Steely Dan’s “FM”, Kenny Loggins’ “Heart to Heart”, Toto’s “Rosanna.” Less a genre than a vibe, yacht rock often ultra-mellow and probably best enjoyed in a breezy, summery setting with a piña colada in hand. Think sailboats, palm trees and men wearing captains’ hats – regardless of whether they even own a boat.

The Monsters of Yacht Rock have toured nationally and at large festivals. Members include keyboardist Rick Runner, drummer Todd Tanic, guitarist Matt Overboard, guitarist and percussionist Mark Starboard, guitarist and keyboardist Scott Shipley, and bassist Stewie Stubing. And yes, those names are amazing.

Participants at the Mountain Twilight Concert often ready for the show like it’s a tailgating party, so plan to bring your own chairs, food and beverage of choice to make the most of the festivities. Also, the POA will staff a cash bar at the event.
