Founded in 1949 and joined SCYA in 1950

Total: 490 members – 40% power, 60% sail.

Facilities: Club is open 7 days a week. Bar open Mon.-Thurs. 1600-2200, Fri & Sat 1600-2400, Sun 1500-2200. Galley open Wed & Fri bar menu 1800-2100; Thur dinner, Fri lunch, Sat & Sun breakfast & lunch. KHYC has first right of refusal for berths in King Harbor Marina and offers dry storage and 2 jib boom cranes (3 & 1.5 ton capacity). Guest dock 3 nights free for reciprocals, maximum stay limited, 7 days out of 30. After three nights $1 per foot per night.

Membership: The club is accepting applications for membership. Call for details.

Comments: KHYC is a family club with active fleets and interest groups. The Club is highly competitive in all types of racing, including Multihull, Cal 20 and Martin 242 fleets, and has an excellent junior program with active Opti race teams and teaching.

Achievements: KHYC won the SCYA Senior Club of the Year Award in 2023, 2022, 2017, 2003*, 2002** and 2000 (* tied with BCYC, BYC & DPYC;  ** tied with DPYC)

We’ll help you get into the competitive spirit with an introductory Race With Your Plus-One in season, as part of either the Cal 20 Fleet or the CHRF Sunday Racing Fleet experience.

FAMILY HARBOR PADDLE

For those looking for a more low key and closer-to-the-water experience, enjoy a Family Harbor Paddle Outing, as part of our scheduled Kayak dates or quarterly Stand Up Paddleboard sessions.

MODEL YACHTS EXPERIENCE

Ideal for all ages of sailors who don't currently own a full-size sailboat and want to practice sailing skills, our RC Sailboat Racing Session introduces you to our model yacht group, with casual races most Friday afternoons and regattas on specified weekends during the year.

A SAIL, POWER & PADDLE PLAYGROUND

Our Club is distinguished by an inclusive approach to what it means to be a yacht club, featuring a range of sailing, power and recreational boating programs, stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking, fishing, travel...in fact, nearly any and every recreational activity that involves water, the surf, and the sea. 

FOCUS ON THE WATER

We can’t hide our enthusiasm for competition, featuring our unique blend of sportsmanship and camaraderie. Sailing members take part in a year-round calendar of regattas, invitationals, championships, trips and other events. Signature events include the Spinnaker Series , the Ken Hoover Opti Regatta , the Bud Gardiner Bowl  (Cal 20's), the Cure Cancer Cup Regatta , the famous King Harbor Race Weekend , the His and Hers double-handed series , and the Christmas Regatta . Many KHYC races also comprise parts of other area racing series, including the SoCal Yachting Association’s Midwinter Regatta , the Offshore Series  and the Santa Monica Bay High Point Series .

OFFSHORE ENDEAVORS

An event that deserves its own highlight, the Santa Barbara to King Harbor offshore race has been a tradition between Santa Barbara YC and King Harbor YC since the early 1970s. The race spans 81 nautical miles and fields between 80 and 100 entries per year, with parties and hospitality at each respective club before and after the race.

A SAFE HARBOR

KHYC is a safe harbor port for vessels in distress. Under International Law, there is the policy  of “safe harbor.” That is, no port should be closed to a foreign vessel seeking shelter from a bad storm, equipment failure,  or acts of God. A recent safe harbor vessel that our Club welcomed was the Mayflower, Sea Scout Ship 90, from Newport Beach. In October 2021 the Mayflower was not able to return to her home port because of the closure of harbors to the south, although the schooner and crew were able to return after a few weeks here at KHYC.

BURGEES FOR BEGINNERS

A burgee is a distinguishing flag of a recreational boating organization like King Harbor Yacht Club. The club and our members fly the club's burgee while under way and at anchor, day or night. In fact, all vessels must fly their club burgee (KHYC or otherwise) while here, and also sign in and read the rules and obligations in the logbook.

Here’s a fact that crystalizes our Club’s reputation in one sentence: KHYC boasts more guest and rigging dock space than any other yacht club from Santa Barbara to San Diego. It makes sense: after all, our club was founded by active small boat sailors who all had the usual responsibilities of families and jobs, and were looking for ways to get out on the water to race, cruise, or just have fun enjoying the sea and sun. KHYC’s long history of racing began with launching from local beaches well before the harbor was even built. We’ve expanded and evolved to emphasize making it easy for members to take part in a full variety of activities on, in and around our waters all year long. While there’s a stereotype that yachting is by definition an exclusive experience, KHYC breaks the mold by celebrating the joy of sailing and boating, racing and cruising, paddling and kayaking, and a few other experiences that will no doubt come up as you jump in, enjoyed as part of one warm, welcoming, and incredibly friendly community. After all, being part of a crew means connecting, communicating, and committing to each other at a deeper level, resulting in a camaraderie that is unbreakable, all the while preserving and passing on the skills and knowledge of navigating a vessel at sea. Let me lighten this up a bit: we’re all here to have fun, maybe learn some new skills, perhaps compete for a trophy or two, and ultimately enjoy time with family, friends, and fellow members here at our own private waterfront getaway.
