A family-friendly Dorset pub-restaurant on the edge of Poole

Tucked away in Hamworthy, a few hundred metres from Hamworthy park and beach, the Yachtsman is a favourite of visitors and locals alike. Originally built in the 1950’s by Edward Woodhouse, this lovely haunt has been extensively refurbished with traditional pub features, including grand flagstone floors and rustic oak beams. The perfect example of a welcoming, Dorset town pub.

This charming tavern is dog friendly (as every great pub should be) with a large terrace and garden and inside, the inviting bar is complemented by different rooms, nooks and crannies where you can make yourself at home, all of which are as cosy in the winter as they are glorious in the summer. The Yachtsman

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

I was very impressed when booking this for our family, easy booking, excellent communication and a reminder sent. I thought this all good ahead of our visit. We arrived and were shown to our table, usual sanitiser to use when entering and a one way... system in place. Drinks ordered by friendly staff, then we ordered our meals. Nothing too difficult, prawn cocktails, salmon and butternut squash nuggets. We waited over 30 minutes for the food, 3 starters. The presentation was poor and the food was ok, nothing spectacular. The food was served on a large tray for us to help ourselves to, that’s fine, but it meant that our elderly father had to hand us all our meals, I thought this was a bit over the top. We waited a further 30 minutes or so for our main roast meals, this meant that one of our table had to wait over an hour for his food. The roast beef was tough, the cauliflower cheese was undercooked and the grains in the sauce were visible. Vegetables were served in tin trays, which looked good, good selection, but the kale was inedible. This is clearly restaurant chain food. Stick to the fish and chips which was the best meal on the table. Very disappointed and couldn’t finish the meal. Clearing the table is piling the plates on a large tray which was placed on a stand next to the table, this is ok to do, but I think even with restrictions in place some dining experience can be kept in place. Not sure why we tipped to be honest, it just seems to be expected. COVID rules were good, although the toilets were grim, likely to get something more than COVID in there! We were asked if everything was ok with the meals, but as this was a birthday treat, we didn’t want to start a complaint. Not the cheapest of meals and I would say not value for money, the salmon starter was a small piece of smoked salmon with half a chopped boiled egg in the middle with some capers thrown on, all for over £7. The staff were very friendly, the place was nearly empty, so not sure what it would be like if full. Sorry The Yachtsman, overall disappointing for us. I am sure things will improve in time. More

My wife and I called here yesterday for a pre-booked Sunday cooked dinner, the price was however a bit on the steep side at £12.95 each compared to other places throughout the country we have had Sunday lunches.. I had the chicken dinner which was,... in fairness, all cooked to my liking although it would have been nice to have some mashed potato included with the dinner along with the provided swede in view of the price paid.. My wife had the beef dinner but sadly found most of the beef she could not chew as she said it was a brisket cut of beef and was very chewy (and she knows her beef!).. I did tell her to inform the staff but she is too polite to complain so I have had to write it here and in fairness to the staff it was not brought to their attention to rectify the matter but perhaps this could be addressed for other patrons... Also no staff member actually asked us how our meals were as I would probably have raised the issue on my wife`s behalf.. More

The decor is lovely, but that's about it on the positives. Whilst the waitresses were trying to be helpful, service was slow. The food - well one of our party enjoyed theirs but the rest of us were either mystified by what was served or... just out rightly disappointed. The fish was inedible being over cooked, dry and tasted horrible. Its not cod, and the cheap cut doesn't even come close to the taste and texture yet they charge the same price as if it was. Two of us basically didn't eat our meals and when we told the waitress nothing was done about it. For the prices charged much better was expected and not delivered. The fact that the place was empty says something as well. We won't be back More

Hi Amanda, I’m very sorry your experience at the Yachtsman was not up to scratch. I would appreciate if you could drop me an email at [email protected] with some details of when you visited, in order for me to further investigate the issue. Best wishes,... More

I prebooked a table for 4 of us whilst staying at Rockley Park. 2 adults 2 teenagers. We ordered 1 hummus and flat bread, not enough bread and the hummus was utterly tasteless. 2 chicken burgers with fries the kids enjoyed it, 1 ham egg... and chips and 1 fish and chips, the chips were triple cooked and we had 9 of them each! I kid you not! When my fish arrived I couldn't see the chips at first as the fish had been hidden on top of them, so not triple cooked more soggy in steam. The tartare sauce was just mayo mixed with a few chopped pickles and wasn't pleasent. We then ordered 1 dessert which our girls shared and enjoyed. If it wasnt a discounted eat out meal the bill with 4 soft drinks came to over £72!! The service between courses was unnecessarily slow. Needless to say, we didn't go back! Fish and chips at Rockleys own chippy were much better quality and value. More

As a family 2x adults 1x child we’ve not eaten here for about three years but decided to chance it after a previous mediocre experience. COVID wasn’t around last time but the staff made us feel very safe and comfortable from seating us all the... way through to taking our drinks and food from the trays. Three mains, steak and tanglefoot pie, fish and chips and a burger, would recommend the chocolate brownie for a pud, all top draw and reasonably priced with a mid week 25% off. More

We went to the Yachtsman for our first venture out after lock down for my daughters birthday lunch. The staff & pub itself were amazing. Everything has been geared up as it should be & we felt very comfortable sitting outside in the lovely garden... area to eat our meal. However, unfortunately we were disappointed with the meal. It was quite expensive anyway, & then when it arrived the Ling fish was over cooked & the smaller portion of ham, egg & chips of one egg, a small piece of ham & a few chips for over £9 looked unappetising & was poorly presented. Great place for a drink but am sorry to say wouldn't eat there again. I also havent received my receipt via email which I understood I should get after paying at the table with my phone which is a great way to pay to keep contact to a minimum. More

We arrived just before it opened and sat outside where it was cold. Staff arrived and no one greeted us or let us know they were open despite seeing us waiting outside with a baby. We were ignored when we arrived so found our own... table. We were then rudely told “how am I meant to know you are here if you just sit down?” So we asked where we should sit and moved. We wanted to order off the lunch menu but apparently the chef was off sick so they couldn’t make sandwiches, just hot food (surely sandwiches are the easiest on the menu, I could have made them myself). So we asked for an alternative lunch menu and they then said they would make the sandwiches. Although the sandwiches were tasty, our party have been incredibly sick, with vomiting since eating there. I could only assume they heated something up they shouldn’t. This was a 3rd time visiting, the time before we had what looked like fairy liquid left at the bottom of the chip container - we were told it was cabbage juice (we didn’t order cabbage and it was a blue colour..). The time before we went for a roast and they got the gluten free meal confused and we had to send it all back. We thought we would try 3rd time lucky because it was somewhere my uncle had been to when he lived here many years ago and we wanted to reminisce- we’re paying for it now being so unwell. Such a shame the food and service don’t match the lovely location and setting. More

Underwhelming in every way. We were put on a table in a very cramped corner despite other tables being free, so had to ask to move. The service was so slow we had to ask to order, and wait she's for food to arrive. Whitebait... served with no tartare sauce, apparently they had run out, but didn't mention this or offer an alternative until asked. Luke warm, soggy chips and again no tartare sauce with fish and chips, again no alternative offered. Bhaji burger was bland, greasy and soggy. Waited so long for someone to offer us dessert or the bill that I eventually went to bar to pay. I was asked if everything was ok, when I said not really, no explanation was offered, no manager called. Lovely pub for a drink, just don't bother for food. More

Visit this establishment occasionally mainly just for a drink but on this occasion choose to eat, we had double cheeseburger & chips, the burgers were very bland, overcooked & dry, they had very little taste. The chip portions were quite small also for almost £15... a meal we were very disappointed. The service itself was very good & the young barmaid/waitress was very helpful shame the meal ruined it More

This Hall and Woodhouse pub is attractively decored inside with a nautical theme. Fairly standard pub menu in content and pricing to suit all tastes, gluten free available. At the moment food is still half price at beginning of the week. We were a party... of a dozen and orders, drinks and food were all delivered in quite quick time. My chicken caesar was excellent, plenty of sliced roast chicken, small amount of bacon pieces and several anchovies, nice crisp fresh lettuce, good sized portion. All my friends were satisfied with their burgers and fries. More

Thank you very much for your very positive feedback! We're glad that you enjoyed your recent visit and we look forward to seeing you again soon. The Yactsman's Team

Had a Sunday lunch there. It was very hot in the garden but relatively cool inside where we ate. Very friendly waitress attended to us. Roast beef was nicely rare but a bit gristly. Chicken Caesar salad was well presented but not enough dressing. We... asked and this was quickly rectified. I had a beef and Tanglefoot ale pie. Pie was full and mash and red cabbage good. Adequate jug of gravy. Three peach blueberry and crumbles followed. One guest (alright me) asked for a knob of ice cream with the custard and this was willingly served without extra charge. The pub serves good Hall and Woodhouse ales, 4on tap. More

Visited in April 2022, was a very nice warm, welcoming environment, we were greeted promptly by a very pleasant young lady. When ordering we were difficult asking for things to be taken off and added etc. Without asking the young lady came back and offered... me something extra as I had removed my red cabbage from my pie. This really impressed me. The food was outstanding and catered very well for my young son who had fish goujons, these were very fresh and he wolfed them down at a speed of knots. Overall very very impressed and at a very reasonable price. The staff deserve full credit for a very enjoyable experience especially the young lady who seated and took our order, doffed cap to you!! My family had an absolutely wonderful afternoon at the Yachtsman. Nadine and her staff went out of their way to provide a special day knowing that we were holding a family lunch to remember a loved one. They were all really approachable and attentive and... even managed to find us some un-forecasted sunshine so we could be together outside in the garden after lunch. Highly commend them all! More

Visited with my family over the half term, was squeezed into a tiny uncomfortable corner feeling like we were on top of two other tables. Not an amazing menu choice. I ordered a salad which was completely inedible with soggy packet cold chicken, with red... jelly like streaks through it. Vile! The lettuce was coated in a serious amount of sickly source. My child who eats anything barely touched his cold greasy and ‘’sorry looking for itself’’ fish and chips. My partner was very disappointed in his ham egg and chips.. how can you get that wrong?! The only thing that was edible was their cheesey garlic bread! A shame as I wouldn’t mind paying the price if the food had a little more love put into it. More

Good evening, We are very sorry to hear you weren't happy with your experience with us on this occasion, We pride ourselves in doing all we can to make your day if you would like to send me through an address via email I would... More

Booked here as staying close by. Staff we’re extremely polite and friendly whilst being professional. Covid rules all followed and service excellent. There was a little confusion when we ordered the food but was rectified immediately and apologies given. The steak was cooked and presented... perfectly and fish pie delicious. The Eton mess dessert was superb. Thankyou for a perfect evening. More

The Yachtsman

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Terrible food. Cold plates, vegetables like mush, beef shredded and uneatable. Ok if you like a very large Yorkshire pudding . Wouldn’t give it one star but have as the waitress was helpful and efficient Overall very very poor and would not recommend

Absolutely fantastic service and food. We had the fish and chips, double cheeseburger and steak and ale pie. All were excellent quality and piping hot. The fish and chips were the best that we had ever tasted, not even slightly greasy, very crisp and like... More

Very little table service, no interaction or check in with our table. We ordered our drinks from the bar, rarely saw a member of staff serving food. Quality of food was ok, but the lack service made the overall experience very poor.

This is a very pleasant pub in a quiet area. It's in Hamworthy, part of Poole. Hamworthy is mentioned in the Domeday Book but Poole isn't. The Yachtsman is so called because it's near a marina. It does good food, although I've not had much to eat there myself. It seems fairly popular and is the 'local' for quite a big area. Gets my vote over some other pubs.

I went here the first night I arrived and the night before I headed home. I loved it both times. The first night I had the Tuns...delish! The lastnight I had the roast dinner. I chose chicken, it was great and I had Yorkshire pudding for the first time.

Have been going there for arround 3 years, over the last 6 months the pub food has beeing going down hill, the management really dont have a clue whats going on and the food well lets not go there.
