I know many people, especially in the boating industry, who long for the “good old days,” when life and technology and the very pace at which we lived were simpler. Topaz represents the perfect expression of that sentiment: rock-solid, simple, proven technology and the kind of craftsmanship and luxury that comes to mind when we reminisce. In fact, 20 years ago, a company called Marine Matrix surveyed thousands of boaters and discovered that Topaz delivered the highest rating of owner satisfaction.

Performance The Bertram 31 became the world’s most successful pocket sport-fisherman only because this Topaz 32 wasn’t around at the time. You’ll find it very difficult to come up with any negatives when considering this boat.   Idling out of Townsend’s Inlet on the south Jersey coast at 6 mph (650 rpm using 1.7 gph), the trolling-speed wake exhibited two distinct, clear alleys, though all turbulence disappeared by the second wave back. Past the jetties, the Topaz 32 hopped onto plane in four seconds, dramatically faster than the original 32. In fact, Topaz CEO Tom Russell has made so many improvements to this boat that you can hardly compare it with the original. The 420-hp Caterpillar 3126s crank out twice the power that the original 32 could muster. In fact, all the power options, from three different diesel companies and ranging from 350 to 450 hp, supply more muscle than this boat’s earlier version offered.   Rather than riding bow high the way the predecessor did, the new 32’s flat angle throws spray out amidships. Anytime wind catches the spray, the boat has already passed before spray rises to deck level. Making use of the knife-sharp entry to carve through head seas smoothes the ride, too.   Top speed with the Cats hit 35.9 mph at 2,850 rpm while burning 35.5 gph total — considerably faster than in days of yore. Cruising speed also improved by throttling back, running comfortably at 31 mph turning 2,400 (21.4 gph) while providing a range of more than 450 miles.   Hard turns, fishing spins and backing down are all exactly what you’d expect from a fine fishing machine. You can’t ask for more. Well, I might ask for single-lever controls, but that’s all.

Fishing  Topaz has quite successfully maximized the available cockpit space by moving the livewell, tackle and rigging modules to the forward end of the cockpit and placing the big, hinged-lid fish box in the deck. Optional items include a bait freezer and fighting chair.   When you choose the optional marlin or tuna tower (and you will), you can stand in the center of the cockpit, surrounded by your choice of 16 rod/reel combinations in rod holders and rocket launchers. The standard-issue coaming pads hit an average-sized person just above the knees. Topaz glasses in a support plate for anyone wishing to mount a fighting chair.   Backing down in relatively calm seas didn’t produce prodigious amounts of water in the cockpit even around the tuna door. However, if you back up-sea on a rough day, the amazing scupper system that drains into a central box, then out through the transom, will empty the deck very quickly.   I used to see quite a few 32-foot Topaz boats 100 miles offshore fishing the Northeast canyons. I expect that once word gets around that a new, improved model has come on the market, Topaz loyalists will flock to sign up for it.

Design and Construction From the rub rail down, Topaz consists of nothing but solid fiberglass. A substantial layer of gelcoat in your choice of color starts the process. Then vinylester resin bonds with Coremat (to prevent print-through) and stitched fiberglass — nine layers — resulting in a bottom a full inch thick. Above the rail, the laminate contains balsa coring for weight savings without sacrificing strength. As I said, tried-and-true construction technology.   The bridge deck sits several inches higher than in the old models. This not only affords more work space in the engine compartment, but dramatically increases 360-degree visibility as well. The helm provides more than ample space for flush-mounted electronics, though short people may find it a tad tall when seated.   Topaz still employs some of the best Old-World craftsmen, who assure that every drawer, locker, cabinet, teak-and-holly sole, and hardwood bulkhead fits seamlessly into the hull and that every grain pattern is book-matched. Sure, it takes more effort and money than glassing in a fiberglass liner and then adding wood trim, but that would go against the quality mission Topaz lives by.   Belowdecks, a comfortable L-shaped dinette to starboard can seat three easily, while the galley and head opposite provide the alpha and omega of food processing. A large double berth in the forepeak lets weekending aboard become a reality.   Many express boats suffer from high bridge-deck noise levels. Because the cabin and attendant carpeting don’t muffle engine noise, some expresses tire you out just by forcing you to listen to the cacophony all day. Topaz researched noise abatement with some of the top experts in the field and has built one of the quietest-running expresses on the market today.

Topaz 32 Express: Deja New

Get on any modern express in the 30′ to 35′ class, and you’re likely to find one of those cool-looking tilt-up helm decks. Press a button and rams raise up the entire helm deck to provide easy access. Just one problem – access isn’t always so easy on these rigs. The lifting rams are often put between the two engines, right where you enter the engine room. That’s what I expected as I watched the helm deck of the new Topaz 32 Express raise up, but instead I found the most accessible engine room you’re likely to encounter on this type of boat, because Topaz engineers put the hydraulic lifters outboard of the big iron horses.

Other unexpected engineering feats surround you on the 32 Express. Check out the helm deck seating, for example. Two center-facing seats behind the helm provide visibility both fore and aft, so they’re useful whether running or trolling. To make room for these seats, 1’6″ was borrowed from the cabin on the old design. That doesn’t mean the cabin is lacking – there’s a large berth forward, a dinette that folds into a second berth, a fully enclosed head, and a rodbox that holds up to eight rigs located over the main berth. I wish they’d replace the rodbox’s spring-strut supports, though, because in my experience these break after a year or two of use. Topaz fitted the cockpit with such standard features as a raw-water washdown, a massive macerated fishbox, a triple-tray tacklebox, and a bait freezer/tackle station. One thing I like about this cockpit is the clean transom – with the fishbox located in the sole and the livewell positioned forward, the entire stern is open for fish fighting.

Construction highlights include bulkheads that are glassed to the hull, fiberglass-encapsulated fir stringers, and through-bolted aluminum L-bracket motor mounts. While popping through waves, the 32 Express is vibration? and rattle-free, and the beefy 18,500-pound displacement gives it plenty of heft so it can shove waves out of the way. Compare that to the 31′ Rampage 30’s 11,600-pound displacement ($194,860 with 300-bhp Yanmar diesels), and the 32 Express’ wave-busting heft becomes clear.

LAST WORD. The next generation of hardcore sportfish, the new 32 Express has more than enough brawn for a serious offshore fish hunter.

Waupaca County communities pass wake boat ban ordinance on Chain O' Lakes

TOWN OF DAYTON (WLUK) -- An ordinance to restrict artificial wake enhancement on certain lakes in Waupaca County was passed unanimously Tuesday night by a joint board for the Dayton and Farmington communities.

It took the board only five minutes to make its decision.

Dayton resident Casey Plunkett said it's the best decision for the lakes.

“Ecstatic. The town boards did the right thing. We have to protect the lakes, they're too small," Plunkett said. "Great technology, but its meant for bigger lakes. 500 and up, that's where people should be taking these boats.”

Plunkett says the Spencer Lake Association has been working towards this ordinance for a long time.

“I, for the last year and half now, have been working with the other lake associations on the Chain O’ Lakes and Stratton. Really started to heat up in January though, when Farmington initially passed and repealed their ordinance.”

The ordinance aims to restrict the use of special tanks used on boats to create larger wakes than others.

Plunkett says the response to the ordinance has been overwhelmingly supportive.

“We had over 700 responses affirmative for the ordinance, and about 4%, or 25 or so, were against," he said.

Plunkett also tells FOX 11 Dayton and Farmington are just two small towns dealing with this issue, and it could float downstream to other communities.

2 seriously injured after boat explodes in Lake Michigan near Waukegan

A witness spoke with FOX 32 Tuesday night, describing the moments a boat exploded on Lake Michigan.

WAUKEGAN, Ill. - Two men are in serious condition after a boat exploded in Lake Michigan near Waukegan on Tuesday afternoon.

Around 3 p.m., the Lake County Sheriff's Marine Unit was notified of the explosion and responded to the scene to assist the U.S. Coast Guard and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

Deputies from the Sheriff's Marine Unit launched their Lake Michigan Patrol Boat from North Point Marina. During the response, they observed flames tearing through the boat, which was located approximately two miles northeast of Waukegan Harbor.

Before deputies arrived, a good Samaritan who was boating nearby had already jumped into action – rescuing both men on board.

A boat caught on fire in Lake Michigan near Waukegan Tuesday afternoon.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office identified the occupants of the boat as a 46-year-old man from Washington state and a 55-year-old man from Franklin Park, Illinois.

They were transported to a local hospital in serious condition after suffering burn injuries and smoke inhalation.

The unoccupied vessel – a 25-foot fiberglass hull powerboat – continued to burn for about 90 minutes before sinking, according to officials.

An experienced boater who witnessed the ordeal shares what he saw.

"I could see the smoke as soon as I pulled out of the harbor and it was probably a good 2.5 miles, three miles away by the time I got there, and the smoke went for well over an hour. After I left it continued to burn and then finally, when it went down in the water, that was it, it was gone," said Jim Schiffman. "It was a twin engine, looked something like what I would call a Chaparral, Monterey or Sea Ray – it was a dayboat, it wasn’t a captain cruiser, that’s a boat that doesn’t go slow."

The U.S. Coast Guard sent a team to the scene to monitor pollution from the fire.

The cause of the explosion is unknown. The Illinois Conservation Police are investigating.

Missing boater found dead after tugboat sank in Houston Ship Channel, Coast Guard says

T he Coast Guard and other local, state and federal agencies spent hours searching for a missing man who was on board a tugboat that sank in the Houston Ship Channel Friday afternoon. The man's body was found Saturday evening, according to the Coast Guard

Five people from the boat were in the water after it capsized and went under about half a mile east of the Lynchburg Ferry .

Coast Guard Commander Michael Cortese said four were quickly rescued by good Samaritans and they're expected to be OK.

"I'd like to thank the good Samaritans that sprang into action -- that were in the general vicinity when the incident happened. They're really the lifesavers that get the credit for saving those four mariners," Cortese said.

They were using boats and helicopters to search for the man near the south end of the Lynchburg Ferry on Friday.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office and Houston Police Department sent boats and dive teams to help with the search. Cortese said Texas Parks and Wildlife and the Army Corps of Engineers also helped.

"This is a multi-level response operation," Cortese said. "We're all engaged to locate the missing individual and keep the water safe and all the traffic away from here so no harm can come to other boaters."

Cortese said the 50-foot-long "Miss Peggy" tugboat capsized and went under down around 2 p.m.

He said an investigation would be done to determine why the boat sank once the search and recovery mission ended.

The Coast Guard said they searched for a combined 32 hours and covered 92 nautical miles.

"Our strongest thoughts and prayers go out to the family, loved ones, and all those involved in this tragic incident,” said Capt. Keith M. Donohue with the Coast Guard. “I also thank all our port and maritime partners for the tremendous cooperation and assistance rendered over these last two days."

The vessel is owned by Houston Fleeting Services, which is owned by Ingram Marine. A spokesperson for Ingram Marine Saturday morning told KHOU 11 in a statement that one person from the five-person crew was still missing. Read the full statement:

“At approximately 2:15 pm CST yesterday (Friday), one of our fleeting vessels, the M/V Miss Peggy, sunk while traveling in the Houston Ship Channel. The U.S. Coast Guard and local authorities were immediately notified. There were five crew members on board at the time of the event and there is one associate still unaccounted for at this time. Two other associates were transported to the hospital for treatment – one has since been released and the other is in stable condition. 

"A Unified Command has been established consisting of representatives from federal, state and local authorities as well as Ingram Marine representatives. Search and rescue operations are currently underway and will continue through the day, led by the U.S. Coast Guard. This is a rapidly developing situation but we will share more information as it is available.”
