Crystal Serenity Itineraries

Crystal serenity review, review of crystal serenity.

The 2003-built Crystal Serenity cruise ship is the second/bigger of the two Crystal Cruises ships - with fleetmate Crystal Symphony (1995).

The vessel (IMO number 9243667) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 311536000) and registered in Nassau .

Following extensive drydock refits and refurbishments in 2023, for the new (relaunched by A&K) Crystal Cruises, the Serenity ship was scheduled to restart operations on July 31st (from Marseille Fos Port) while the Symphony ship was scheduled to restart on September 1st (from Piraeus-Athens).

Crystal Serenity started a Preview Voyage on July 21st (2023) out of Trieste (Italy) . Carrying VIP guests only, the itinerary's call ports were Kotor, Montenegro (Jul 22), Venice (Jul 24-25/overnight), Naples (Jul 28), Livorno (Jul 29).

History - construction and ownership

Crystal Cruises was founded in 1988 as a subsidiary of the Japanese NYK Line (Nippon Yusen Kaisha) - one of the world's largest container shipping companies . In 2015, NYK Line sold Crystal Cruises to Genting Hong Kong (GHK). Following the acquisition, the company was renamed to Crystal Ltd. In January 2022, GHK filed for bankruptcy and all its assets were put to sale. In June 2022, the brand Crystal Cruises was acquired by A&K Travel Group Ltd (Abercrombie & Kent). The company currently groups the ultra-luxury travel brands Crystal Cruises (ocean-going ships), Crystal River Cruises (European riverboats), Crystal Yacht Cruises (mega-yachts), Crystal Luxury Air (aircraft) and Crystal AirCruises (fly-cruise deals).

Following the bankruptcy of the parent company GHK-Genting Hong Kong Ltd in January 2022, GHK's subsidiary Crystal Cruises Inc (USA) went bankrupt in February.

In June 2022, both Crystal Cruises' ocean ships (Serenity and Symphony) were auctioned in The Bahamas. Both vessels (being under arrest in Freeport Bahamas since February 5th) were sold via a sealed tender auction, with bids submitted to The Bahamas' Supreme Court and a 10% deposit.

On June 15th, Bahamian sources announced that both vessels are sold in the auction - Serenity to CSE Ltd for USD 103 million (EUR 99M / GBP 84,6M) and Symphony to CSY Ltd for USD 25 million (EUR 24M / GBP 20,5M). The financiers were presented by the Bahamian law firm Alexiou Knowles & Co. Reportedly, both shipowning companies (CSY and CSE) are owned by Manfredi Lefebvre d'Ovidio de Clunieres di Balsorano (1953-born multibillionaire, co-owner of Silversea , Chairman of Heritage Group, Co-Chairman of A&K/Abercrombie and Kent).

On June 22nd was announced that both vessels are now owned by A&K Travel Group Ltd - a joint venture of Abercrombie & Kent Ltd (owned by Geoffrey Kent) and Heritage Group Monaco (Lefebvre family-owned private equity specializing in luxury travel, VIP tourism, medical technologies). Following extensive drydock refurbishments, both ships restart operations in 2023 for the relaunched Cristal Cruises brand, which was fully acquired by A&K. For the ships' management, A&K contracted the Monaco-based V.Ships Leisure Ltd (part of V.Group Holdings Ltd).

Crystal Serenity and Symphony left Freeport on July 6th, en route to Europe (arriving in Trieste on July 24th) for drydocking at the Fincantieri shipyard. The project also included installing shore power connectivity that allows the berthed vessel to plug into the port city's power grid for the electricity needed for all hotel operations.

Crystal Serenity cruise ship

The 1000-passenger ship Crystal Serenity's Maiden Voyage (14-day Baltic Sea itinerary) departed on July 7, 2003, from Southampton (England UK) . Serenity's first World Voyage started on January 14, 2004 (106-day itinerary from LA to NYC ).

In response to demand, Crystal Serenity had twice as many Penthouses in comparison to the fleetmate. There are two paddle tennis courts (instead of one) as boat devotees are fiercely competitive in this field.

The Serenity ship is very spacious, with a calm and quiet atmosphere, elegant decoration. The interior colors are calming - muted golds, greens, blues, grays, and reds. Stateroom furniture and wood accents are in darker gamma, with lively colorful bedding, curtains, upholstery, wall coverings. The interior spaces were designed by the companies Tillberg (Sweden), Garroni (Italy), Okada (Japan), Nix Firestone (USA), BBGM (USA), Stephen John (UK), II By IV (Canada).

Before 2023, the standard Balcony cabins (65% of all accommodations) were sized 21 m2 / 225 ft2. The ship used to have a total of 623 staterooms (of which 108x Suites and 356x Balconies) in 13 categories, including 10x wheelchair-accessible cabins. The vessel (STX France Chantiers de l'Atlantique yard/hull number H32) has volume 68870 GT-tons, DWT-deadweight tonnage 10810 tons, max draught 7,6 m. The powerplant is based on 6x Wartisla marine diesel engines (model 12V38B) with combined output 52,2 MW (70000 hp). The propulsion is diesel-electric and based on 2x Rolls-Royce Mermaid podded propulsors/thrusters with combined output 27 MW (36210 hp). The registered shipowner is CRYSTAL SERENITY LTD, while the registered manager is CRYSTAL CRUISES LLC (the previous owner was SERENITY HOLDINGS LTD/until 2023).

The vessel's physical construction started on June 13, 2002, with the keel laying ceremony held at Chantiers de l'Atlantique ( St Nazaire, France ). The ship was launched/floated out from drydock on August 10, 2002, completed/delivered on June 30, 2003, and christened on July 3, 2003, in Southampton England by godmother Julie Andrews (UK actress-singer, 1935-born as Julia Elizabeth Wells). On July 7th started the Inaugural Cruise (14-day itinerary roundtrip from Southampton to Northern European/Baltic ports).

On January 14, 2004, the ship started its first "Around The World Voyage" , leaving roundtrip from the USA ( Los Angeles ). The 106-day itinerary (January 14th through May 5th) ended in NYC.

In summer 2016, Crystal Serenity became the world's 3rd cruise ship with a Northwest Passage Cruise - after the 2013 voyages of Ponant 's superyachts Le Soleal , and Le Boreal . The 32-day itinerary was from Seward Alaska to NYC New York (August 16 to September 16), with ports of call Kodiak Island Alaska (Aug 17), Dutch Harbor Unalaska (Aug 19), Nome Alaska (Aug 21), Victoria Island Nunavut Canada (Aug 27 and 29), Baffin Island Nunavut Canada (Sept 4), Ilulissat Greenland (Sept 7), Sisimiut Greenland (Sept 8), Nuuk Greenland (Sept 9), Bar Harbor Maine (Sept 13), Boston Massachusetts (Sept 14) and Newport Rhode Island (Sept 15).

Serenity's second Northwest Passage transit was in 2017. The 32-day itinerary (Seward to NYC/August 15 through September 15) included the same call ports - Kodiak Island (Aug 16), Dutch Harbor (Aug 18), Nome (Aug 20), Victoria Island (Aug 25-28), Baffin Island (Sept 3), Ilulissat Greenland (Sept 6), Sisimiut Greenland (Sept 7), Nuuk Greenland (Sept 8), Bar Harbor ME USA (Sept 12), Boston MA USA (Sept 13) and Newport RI USA (Sept 14). Prices started from around USD 22,000 per person (double occupancy rates).

During Northwest Passage 2017, Crystal Serenity navigated in the Arctic Ocean on the Arctic route (500 mi north of the Arctic Circle) and the cruise ship was escorted by the icebreaker Ernest Shackleton . Ernest Shackleton was equipped with two helicopters (for emergencies), tools for oil pollution containment, high-tech communications equipment, survival rations. For the voyage, Crystal Serenity was upgraded with an ice detection radar, ice navigation system, forward-looking sonar. The Navigation Bridge team received ice navigation training, and ice pilots boarded both vessels (Shackleton and Serenity) for the crossing. Icebreaker's crew also assisted with Crystal Cruises' "Unexpected Adventures" tours - like helicopter flightseeing, Zodiac boat wet landings, speedboat rides, kayaking.

Crystal Serenity drydock refurbishment 2023 review

In 2023, Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony were drydock refitted and fully refurbished at Fincantieri 's yard in Trieste . The US$150 million project was undertaken by Crystal Cruises' new owner Abercrombie & Kent (A&K Travel Group).

The refits resulted in staterooms reduction (larger suites, new categories) as well as reduced passenger capacity and enlarged and redesigned public spaces and venues. During the drydocks, Crystal Serenity's cabins were reduced from 525 to 347 (passenger-per-space ratio from 54 to 62), and the pax capacity changed from 980-1254 max to 740-794 max.

As part of the refurbishments, on both ships (Serenity and Symphony) were introduced two new cabin categories - "Junior Crystal Penthouse Suite" and "Single Guest Room with Ocean View" (bookable without single supplements).

Crystal Serenity's Prego Restaurant was redesigned and renamed Osteria D'Ovidio (offering traditional Italian cuisine). The new Crystal Spa Aurora is a luxurious wellness complex offering various treatments, including Aurora LED, Cryo Facial Experience, Biotec 2.0 Ultimate Facial.

All passenger staterooms on Crystal Serenity were redesigned/enlarged and their categories were changed - Deluxe Oceanview (40x) to Double Guest Room with Oceanview (40), Deluxe Balcony (298x) to Double Guest Room with Veranda (46), Seabreeze Penthouse (36x) to Aquamarine Veranda Suite (86x), Seabreeze Penthouse Suite (2x) to Sapphire Veranda Suite (151x), Penthouse Suite (33x) was redesigned/enlarged to Junior Crystal Penthouse Suite (6x), the Penthouses (72x) were redesigned into other cabins and were created single cabins (14x) forward on Deck 7.

According to A&K, the replacement of the engines and other machinery on both ships cost the company US$50+ million. The machinery repairs and upgrades (below deck 4) were needed as the equipment was old and poorly maintained.

Crystal Serenity refurbishments review (2013-2020)

Crystal Serenity's drydock in 2020 (April 13-23, in Singapore) was a USD 10 million project for conducting mainly regular technical and general maintenance works, plus minor upgrades to passenger staterooms and public areas (new carpets, furniture, repairs).

The ship's drydock refurb in 2018 (October 18 - November 6, done at Lloyd Werft in Bremerhaven Germany ) reduced the passenger capacity in order to enable single-seating dining. Following the dry-dock, Crystal Serenity offers to all its passengers free Wi-Fi (regardless of cabin category).

  • On deck 9, two new balcony cabin categories were introduced - Seabreeze Penthouse Suite (12 new suites added) and Seabreeze Penthouse (28 new suites added). The new staterooms have the same size as the existing Penthouse (365 ft2 / 34 m2) and Penthouse Suite (490 ft2 / 46 m2). Seabreeze Penthouses are connecting cabins (sharing an entryway).
  • All Penthouses offer enhanced all-inclusive amenities, including butler service, in-cabin dining, complimentary specialty restaurant dining).
  • Cabin conversions reduced the ship's capacity from 1254 to 980, thus increasing the guest-to-space ratio to 70,3.
  • Stardust Club (deck 6) was redesigned and upgraded with new accent lighting, upholsteries of banquettes, new loose seating (replacing the dance floor).
  • Crystal Dining Room (deck 7) was renamed "Waterside" and upgraded with additional 2- and 4-seat tables. New open-seating dining (between 6-9:30 pm) replaced the old assigned seating and required dinner reservations. Breakfasts and lunches are served as usual. Dining room changes also included new marble flooring, new screen dividers, new seating configuration (increased 2-4-seat tables), new chandelier.
  • Lido Cafe operates as Marketplace (during the day) and as Churrascaria (steakhouse, by night). The restaurant features an open kitchen and made-to-order dishes. Marketplace serves buffet breakfast and lunch, while Churrascaria serves casual dinner (between 6-9 pm). The Brazilian-themed Churrascaria restaurant features Caipirinha (welcome cocktail event) and selection of Brazilian dishes (grilled seafood and meats, tapas, ceviche, salads). Meats are served by "gauchos" (dedicated staff) on traditional meat skewers.
  • On Deck 12, Tastes restaurant was redesigned (with Asian-themed interior) and renamed "Silk Kitchen and Bar". The menu was upgraded with modern Chinese fare (family-size dinner plates) served throughout the day. Self-service is available at breakfast and lunch, and also includes traditional Chinese food (dumplings, Chinois salad, soup, noodle bar). Dinners at Silk Kitchen are open-seating (reservations-recommended) and served between 6-9 pm.
  • Trident Bar and Grill serves casual grilled food (including fast food - burgers, sandwiches).
  • Silk Road and The Sushi Bar (both specialty restaurants by celebrity chef Nobu Matsuhisa) were renamed "Umi Uma". Umi Uma offers Nobu-inspired dishes prepared by Nobu-trained chefs.
  • "Umi Uma" and "Prego" restaurants reservations are complimentary for Penthouse passengers. To all other cabin categories, 1 complimentary specialty dining is offered (additional reservations are available at a surcharge).
  • "Computer University at Sea" (enrichment workshops) were updated and redesigned.

The new free-of-charge Wi-Fi is shipwide, and the result of the company's investment in new hardware and software for expanded onboard connectivity and faster (doubled) satellite Internet speed. Crystal Connect is the ship's new onboard portal for internet connections and various shipboard info (menus, news, scheduled activities, shore excursions, itinerary ports, international digital news media, movies library, lectures, etc). Crystal Connect (mobile app) is available for personal devices.

All passenger cabins were upgraded with new 42-inch smart TVs with interactive panels (infotainment system). Among the redesigned public spaces is the fore-located Palm Court (observation lounge on deck 12), where was added more intimate seating. The Lounge's stage was relocated, and the former stage area was transformed into a dedicated "Afternoon Tea" space offering fresh leaf teas and house-made pastries in the afternoons. Palm Court's bar was also renovated.

Along with all Lloyd Werft workers, the refurbishment project also involved several hundred crew and sub-contractors. Almaco Group (1998-founded company) was the project's supervisor.

During the 2016 drydock (May), the ship received overhauls of all Penthouse Suites. Also renovated were the Lido Deck's Trident Grill, Lido Cafe, and Tastes restaurant. The 2016 drydock (at Navantia Shipyard in Cadiz Spain ) also included general maintenance works.

Deckplan changes after the November 2013 drydock included:

  • general maintenance work, including propulsion upgrade (left-side Rolls-Royce Azimuth thruster replacement), new hull coating, air-duct cleaning, reverse osmosis plant inspection.
  • Introducing new "Deluxe PURE" category of staterooms (hypoallergenic cabins)
  • Redesigning the Tastes buffet and the Lido area (deck 12)
  • New LED lighting in public rooms.

Drydock 2013 refurbishment project's total cost was USD 17 million.

Serenity: The surprising and relaxing yacht from IAG

When owner and designer are on the same page, great things can happen. Cécile Gauert finds just that with the surprising and relaxing Serenity

A beautiful painting of a swan is the focus of the main deck dining room on board the surprising 40.52 metre yacht Serenity . It’s an interesting symbol for the latest and most complex yacht to emerge from the Chinese shipyard IAG Yachts (now part of Sunbird). Although there is nothing unusual about a builder reaching higher standards with each project, much credit for what was achieved with IAG’s new launch goes to Chris Heatley.

The owner of a successful commercial paint company based in Illinois, he’s been handling decisions regarding his family’s boats for years. The new Serenity , the third boat over 24 metres that they’ve had, succeeds a 35.23 metre Lazzara of the same name (now Long Aweighted ), which was not only a much-liked family yacht but also a successful charter yacht.

The adventure of building the new Serenity began about four years ago. “I started to get the itch for a bigger boat, something that could take us a little further, to the Caribbean, more comfortably,” says Heatley. The new Serenity needed to cater to a fun-loving multi-generational family, plus be an appealing option for people looking to charter. In addition, Heatley’s sister has limited mobility and he wanted to ensure that all four decks would be accessible to her.

With a mind bubbling with ideas, he hired an architect to do a first concept and began shopping for shipyards in earnest. Eventually, circumstances and a personal connection led him to IAG, which was building the 42 metre King Baby at the time, an ambitious project that gave the relatively new yacht builder credibility.

In IAG’s American representative at the time, Doug Hoogs, a broker with Atlantic Yacht & Ship, and designer Evan K Marshall , Heatley found a team willing to realise his ideas no matter how unorthodox — for instance, a wading pool on the superyacht sundeck .

“If they had not wanted to do that, I’d have found somebody who would,” says Heatley. But they had no intention of denying him. Stretching the envelope was appealing to the shipyard, which was then looking to make its mark on the US market, and to Marshall, an accomplished designer with an open mind.

Marshall recalls fondly his early meetings with Heatley as they worked on the layout and drew Serenity ’s lines. “He sent me an image of a boat with a reverse windshield and said ‘I really like the look of that. What would it look like?’ So we modelled it up quickly and we both thought, you know what, this is cool. Let’s go for that,” says Marshall.

Designing Serenity was truly a collaborative effort, with sketches going back and forth between client and designer. “I have a portfolio full of them,” says Marshall, who wanted to keep a family look with previous IAG boats, particularly King Baby , which he had designed, but was game to hear Heatley out.

“He is really an interesting guy, full of ideas and willing to take some risks, which is always fun for a designer who doesn’t want to play it safe,” he says. “From the outset he said he really wanted to have balconies.” Heatley wanted to be able to step outside to take in the views and the sea air, like you can on a cruise ship, an experience he remembers fondly from his childhood. Neither of them wanted complicated contraptions that require a crewmember to intervene any time someone wants a breath of fresh air.

So Serenity has three fixed  superyacht balconies  — two off the master stateroom forward on the main deck and one off the sky lounge — all easily accessible through automated sliding doors. These permanent fixtures added to the project’s complexity. The new Serenity , which flies the American flag, was built to comply with RINA class and MCA regulations and, naturally, surveyors had to sign off on everything.

The build captain had some reservations from an operational point of view, particularly when it came to the lower balconies. However, where there is a will, there is a way. Ballistic-grade glass, watertight seals and a steel banister, which is painted light grey to match the yacht’s hull, were part of the solution. A custom-designed inflatable bumper can be fitted beneath the lower balcony to protect it during mooring.

In addition to the balconies, a “bay window” built into the superstructure on the top deck extends the sky lounge over the water. Large enough for two armchairs, this special little corner is one of many interesting spaces on board Serenity . “It’s my favorite place to sit. You can look at the whole length of the boat and see the waves at the back,” says Heatley.

This nook is a short distance from the superyacht elevator , which goes all the way to the sundeck. An elevator on a boat of this size was a design challenge in itself, says Marshall. It opens on two sides, the galley side on the main deck and the corridor, allowing it to function not only as a guest elevator but also a food lift. There was no space left for stairs in this central location, and so they were moved to the aft part of the deck, on the starboard side. Marshall designed them in such a way that they would not obstruct views, which was important to the owner.

Marshall is very pleased with the results, not only with the sleek and original styling but also the interior design of Serenity . “It’s very relaxing and with so many places connected to the water, you can really enjoy the sea. Even the aft deck, which we had to raise because of the tender garage below, is a destination spot and, with a fold-out TV, a great outdoor area to watch sports.“

The interior was a true collaborative effort as well between Marshall, interior outfitting company Yacht Next and the yacht’s owners. Some of the colour scheme is repeated from the family’s previous yacht and the underlying Asian influence comes from Heatley’s home. The family wanted to achieve a feeling of relaxation to go with the name Serenity .

Interestingly, the colours grow gradually darker as you move up from lower to upper deck. Serenity ’s sky lounge is quite masculine, “more of a man cave,” says Heatley. Here is a nice bar with stools, a central credenza containing a humidor and a cosy lounging area facing an electric fireplace that puts out a lovely glow in the evening. It’s a subtle change that works well, particularly since there is continuity in the materials, including a wall finish that resembles a wood veneer from Maya Romanoff.

Although Marshall designed most of the furniture on board Serenity and suggested an interesting leitmotif found on doors throughout the boat — a stylized swan — Yacht Next selected the fabrics from brands such as Rubelli, the wall finishes, and many lighting fixtures.

Yacht Next’s owner, Joanne Lockhart, worked closely with the Heatleys, aptly navigating between the son’s desire for a more contemporary feel and his mother’s preference for a more classic look, evident in the choice of material and colours in the owner's cabin on Serenity ’s main deck. “I think Joanne and my mother did an excellent job,” says Heatley.

Still, many of Serenity ’s standout features were his idea. “I gave Evan a strong vision for the concepts I was looking for, the design of the superyacht spa pool , the wading pool, the skylights, the table that adjusts, the waterfall, the rock floor, the backlit columns, the full-beam stateroom downstairs that converts according to the needs of the family or charter guests. It goes on and on. When you walk through the boat, you can see a lot of different details,” he says.

It’s an accurate statement. Exploring Serenity is like playing a puzzle game that reveals surprises at each turn. I took great pleasure in getting more acquainted with this unconventional yacht as she cruised from Miami Beach after a boat show back to a marina near Fort Lauderdale. Through her large windows I watched the skyline unfold as Serenity slowly made her way through the shallows surrounding Miami Beach.

Standing by the master stateroom’s starboard balcony, listening to music softly playing from overhead speakers and watching clouds recede as the sun set proved a serene experience, worthy of the yacht’s name. Later, as Serenity headed out of the ship channel into a dark sea still reeling from a recent storm, I retreated to the darkened bridge bathed in the red glow of four screens switched to their night-time navigation mode.

Serenity forged ahead at a steady 11.5 to 12 knots, softly rolling off the tops of the waves, as efficient fin stabilisers and the hull design proved their worth. Italian naval architecture firm Axis Group Yacht Design worked with the yard to modify the hull of the IAG 127. It was extended, partly to accommodate a superyacht beach club and large swim platform, and was fitted with a bulb for better fuel efficiency.

Most of the equipment on board is from reputable American companies at Heatley’s request, in part for ease of service, as Serenity will cruise primarily between the East Coast of the US, the Bahamas and the Caribbean — Cuba is also in the plan.

At anchor the sundeck is an amazing entertainment area. In addition to the first-ever wading pool, mentioned earlier, it has an elevated round spa pool with waterfall, a bar, an up-and-down table that accommodates 12 guests, plus bar stools positioned along the side to enjoy views and, if desired, slushies made in the adjacent ice machine.

These are not just novelties born out of a fertile mind. “I love to design and I like the challenge of coming up with something that is functional,” says Heatley, who has experience designing houses. “At our home, we have a zero-entry pool that allows kids to play in two inches of water and we like to bring our lounge chairs into the water and enjoy the coolness. I thought ‘why not do this on the boat?’”

The challenge here was to overcome objections about the practicality of added water weight on top of three skylights. “You have to work everything out with RINA and MCA and all the governing bodies when you build a boat of this calibre.”

From the original idea of having the waterfall from the spa pool overflow into a holding area to create the wading pool, the team came up with a far easier solution. A simple water hose is used to fill the area to a water depth of about two inches. Once Serenity is ready to leave her mooring or the dock, the water is simply pushed to drain over the sides.

Heatley also wanted a welcoming and functional galley with beautiful finishes and windows “so it does not feel like a dungeon” for the chef, who is as important to the family — all cooking fans — as he is for charter guests. The crew, says Heatley, is instrumental to a successful charter program, maybe more so than a well designed yacht, even one with as many tricks as Serenity has.

Heatley readily admits that he had to be more involved than he’d really wanted to be during construction and had to bolster his build team to ensure that the shipyard would meet his expectations. “It was imperative to make sure no corners were cut,” he says. “At the end of the day the quality is top notch,” he says — well worthy of the beautiful swan at the heart of the interior design.

OWNER'S SUITE — SERENITY

Posted September 15, 2018 in Charter by Janine St.Denis

The 122-foot (37.2m) Flagship motor yacht SERENITY is a true testament to her name. Built in 1993, but fully refitted in 2017, SERENITY offers guests a tranquil oasis from which to explore the natural wonders of the Pacific Northwest and Alaska . Eight guests are welcomed aboard for the ultimate luxury adventure — which is exactly what her owners wanted. SERENITY is their first yacht; they purchased her in 2016 and have been delighted by her ever since. Avid charterers, the owners of SERENITY were keen to explore the incredible waters from Seattle to South Alaska; for them, owning their own yacht was the next step .

They spend between six and eight weeks a year on board in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. Previously named TALOS, the owners dubbed their yacht SERENITY because “that is how we feel when we’re aboard. She is the perfect yacht for this region,” her owners say. There are lots of enclosed spaces, like the flybridge — which can be alfresco — and the skylounge, that allow you to enjoy the sights regardless of conditions. The region in which the yacht cruises is unlike the traditional tropical yachting hot spots. Which is just how her owners like it. They’re often on board in Alaska. First thing in the morning, the owner will enjoy a run on the yacht’s treadmill, then the adventures begin.

SERENITY’s 29-foot Alaskan-style fishing boat, the SERENE MACHINE, is fully outfitted for exploration. It is perfectly suited to be independent of the main yacht for the day and comfortably accommodates eight people. The SERENE MACHINE has a standup day head and is enclosed in order to protect from the weather. The SERENE MACHINE is perfect to take guests ashore for hikes, get up-close-and-personal with glaciers, cast a line and hope to reel in the big one, and cruise alongside pods of orcas and other incredible wildlife. “We’ve had it only one season,” the owners say, “and it opened up the utility of the yacht in ways you never imagined.”

Bear in a stream in Alaska

One of the owners’ favorite aspects of the yacht is the on-deck master. “It’s a huge plus as opposed to being down stairs,” they say, but also mention, “The yacht has great spaces for gathering with everyone on board, but it also has places perfect for some quiet time to read a book or watch scenery go by.”

SERENITY’s owners love Alaska and Puget Sound; this region is their favorite cruising destination. “The beauty and the wildlife are incomparable to anywhere we’ve ever been,” they say. “From the islands and changing nature of the landscape to seeing whales, otters, eagles and bears, to going fishing and crabbing, there’s so much to do — we love enjoying the many things that part of the country has to offer.” Another favorite cruising location for SERENITY’s owners is New England along the Penobscot Bay of Maine and farther north into Canada. They also enjoy The Bahamas, specifically the Exumas — they really love the fishing there. But they maintain that no matter where else they have cruised, Alaska is by far the most unique. “It’s constantly changing and always surprising you,” they maintain, adding, “There’s one spot in Red Bluff Bay where you can nose the yacht to a tidal waterfall then cruise a couple hundred yards and spot a bear fishing in a meadow, then in a few more hundred yards, you drop the shrimp pods to catch dinner.”

SERENITY is the perfect yacht in the perfect location for her owners. They enjoy every moment aboard and they offer her for charter, allowing guests to relish the luxury and incredible location that go hand-in-hand with SERENITY. “She was on the charter market when we bought her,” the owners say. “We expected to be aboard between six and eight weeks a year in Alaska and with her already consistent charter following, it made sense for us to make her available to others in those incredible waters.

SERENITY profile with mountains in the background

The responses from clients who cruise in that area are always the same — they are blown away. Unless you’ve spent a lot of time up there, it’s unlike anything you’ve experienced before. We also get a lot of compliments on our incredible crew, but what guests talk about most are their experiences in the hidden bays in which they anchor, and the incredible opportunities SERENE MACHINE has opened up.”

Charter guests get to enjoy everything from fishing to wildlife spotting — “one group of charter guests were out on SERENE MACHINE when a pod of orcas came by,” the owners say. “One of the whales was swimming on its back under the boat, getting a belly scratch from the keel.” Another favorite memory for guests is cruising past glaciers and picking up a piece of floating ice for cocktails that evening.

The captain and crew of SERENITY further enhance the onboard experience. From the captain with a 20-year Navy career and lots of big-boat experience, to the chef who creates incredible Alaskan feasts from the fresh fish caught by the guests that day, the crew up the ante aboard SERENITY, ensuring an enjoyable, five-star experience for all.

After all, yachting is all about having fun! “We love being on the water,” the owners of SERENITY say. And their yacht allows them total flexibility and total peacefulness. “We love to anchor out in a beautiful bay with nothing around us but nature.”

The San José was traveling to Europe with treasures to fund the war of the Spanish succession when it was sunk by the British off the coast of Colombia.

‘Holy grail of shipwrecks’: recovery of 18th-century Spanish ship could begin in April

The San José, sunk in 1708, has been at the center of a dispute over who has rights to the wreck, including $17bn in booty

S ince the Colombian navy discovered the final resting place of the Spanish galleon San José in 2015 , its location has remained a state secret, the wreck – and its precious cargo – left deep under the waters of the Caribbean.

Efforts to conserve the ship and recover its precious cargo have been caught up in a complicated string of international legal disputes , with Colombia, Spain, Bolivian Indigenous groups and a US salvage company laying claim to the wreck, and the gold, silver and emeralds onboard thought to be worth as much as $17bn.

When Colombia tried to auction off part of the bounty to fund the colossal costs of recovering the ship, Unesco and the country’s high courts intervened.

But eight years after the discovery, officials now say they are pushing politics to one side and could begin lifting artefacts from the “holy grail of shipwrecks” as soon as April.

“There has been this persistent view of the galleon as a treasure trove. We want to turn the page on that,” Alhena Caicedo, director of the Colombian Institute of Anthropology and History, said. “We aren’t thinking about treasure. We’re thinking about how to access the historical and archeological information at the site.”

Cannon from the San José.

The San José was returning to Europe with treasures to help fund the war of the Spanish succession when it was sunk by a British squadron in 1708, close to the Caribbean port city of Cartagena.

Historians say the wreck could help reveal much about the Spanish empire at the height of its power – and the shared, overlapping histories of Europe and Latin America.

Eventually, Caicedo’s team hopes to raise the wreck itself, and put it on display in a custom-built museum where visitors will be able to explore “all the secrets of the bottom of the ocean”, she said.

But as the expedition continues to explore the site, the scale and complexity of the challenge is coming into focus.

Few ships like the San José have ever been recovered – and none has ever been salvaged from warm tropical waters.

“This is a huge challenge and it is not a project that has a lot of precedents. In a way, we are pioneers,” said Caicedo.

The closest comparison would probably be to the Mary Rose, the flagship of Henry VIII’s fleet, which sank in 1545 while in battle with the French fleet off the coast of Portsmouth.

That 16th-century wreckage was explored by hundreds of divers – many of whom were volunteers – for a decade before being carefully lifted in 1981. The surviving section of the ship’s hull is now on display in a £35m ($45m) museum .

Contents of the San José shipwreck.

Colombia’s navy has been studying the Mary Rose and other such marine conservation projects to see how it could lift and conserve the 40-metre-long ship and its contents without it all crumbling to dust.

“The San José is a very, very special ship. It’s comparable to the Mary Rose in that it was in action at the peak of Spanish technology and shipbuilding,” said Ann Coats, associate professor in maritime heritage at the University of Portsmouth.

“There are so many questions the San José could help answer!”

The San José’s cargo includes articles of glass, porcelain and leather, and historians hope the haul could inform their understanding of global 18th-century trade networks, Spain’s complex colonial hierarchy and the lives of the 600 souls onboard.

after newsletter promotion

But while the Mary Rose lay in frigid coastal waters, the San José sank in deep, tropical waters which will probably have been cruel to the ship and could make the recovery one of the most costly and complex in history.

“The contents are really varied and we have no idea how the remains will react when they come into contact with oxygen. We don’t even know if it is possible to raise something out of the water,” said Caicedo.

The wreck’s precise location is a state secret to protect the site from looters, but Colombian authorities have revealed that it is 600 metres (2,000ft) below sea level – too far for divers to reach.

The country’s military is currently developing underwater robots that will first photograph, video and map the wreckage before carefully attempting any retrieval.

Exactly how much can be salvaged from the wreck will depend on myriad factors: currents, sea temperature, the type of silt the wreck is submerged in, how the ship’s 60 bronze cannons plunged to the seabed, and even which critters are now living there, says the head of the Mary Rose’s research program, Alex Hildred.

“It was also set on fire,” Hildred says. “Lifting the ship and creating a museum will be really difficult, really expensive and incredibly challenging … And then everyone wants a bit of it. It’s just a nightmare.”

The vessel’s international connections mean that historical research has until now been halted by international litigation over who is its rightful owner.

Although the wreck was found in Colombian waters, Spain has argued that the San José was part of the Spanish fleet and was returning from what was then part of the Spanish empire.

Meanwhile, Sea Search Armada (SSA), a US-based salvage company, has been locked in a legal battle with Colombia, arguing that it located the area in which the San José sank in 1981. SSA has argued that Colombia agreed to split any profits, but in 2011 a US court declared the galleon the property of the Colombian state.

Indigenous communities in Bolivia have also voiced a claim to any possible riches, arguing that their ancestors are likely to have mined the silver and gold used in many of the treasures .

The Colombian ministry of culture says the government has self-funded the first stage of exploration with $7.3m and it will not sell any of the precious artefacts as Unesco pleaded in 2018.

“Money has always driven the story of the San José. The British wanted to capture it to deny money to Spain, then the money onboard drove the archaeological search for the wreck,” said Coats. “Then disputes got in the way of studying the ship. It would be nice if for once money wasn’t driving things and a huge cultural collaboration could take place to study it properly.”

SpaceX’s Starship completes third test flight, its most successful yet

The spacecraft, powered by the world’s most powerful rocket, flew for nearly an hour in space, though it didn’t survive reentry into earth’s atmosphere.

serenity yacht location

SpaceX’s Starship spacecraft made it to space and traveled more than halfway around the world Thursday before coming to a fiery end over the Indian Ocean, in the most successful demonstration to date of the vehicle NASA has chosen to one day land astronauts on the moon.

While the spacecraft did not survive reentry into Earth’s atmosphere, it completed a number of key milestones that were hailed as major steps toward helping SpaceX perfect the art of flying the world’s largest and most powerful rocket.

In addition to a near-perfect launch, the craft flew for nearly an hour after lifting off from SpaceX’s private launch site in South Texas near the Gulf of Mexico at 9:25 a.m. Eastern time. All 33 of the booster’s engines ignited successfully, and after nearly three minutes, the Starship spacecraft separated and began a journey across the globe powered by its six engines.

The mission, SpaceX’s third test flight of the Starship system, was eagerly awaited by NASA, which is investing $4 billion in developing Starship. It intends to use the system to transport astronauts to the moon in the first two human landings since the Apollo era. SpaceX also intends to use the massive vehicle, which stands nearly 400 feet tall, to deploy the next generation of its Starlink internet satellites. Many in the science community are eager to use it to deploy large scientific instruments and telescopes into space.

“Congrats to @SpaceX on a successful test flight!” NASA Administrator Bill Nelson wrote in a post on X . “Starship has soared into the heavens. Together, we are making great strides through Artemis to return humanity to the Moon — then look onward to Mars.”

The vehicle, collectively called Starship, is composed of the Super Heavy booster and a spacecraft that sits on top. The company already has several other rockets under production and hopes to fly again soon, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has said.

On this flight, the rocket achieved a speed of more than 16,000 mph, which would have allowed the spacecraft to enter orbit around Earth. Instead, SpaceX commanded the spacecraft to reenter the atmosphere over the Indian Ocean. After slamming into the thickening atmosphere, it generated heat of about 2,600 degrees Fahrenheit and did not survive. The booster was also lost after it began to tumble as it fell back to Earth over the Gulf of Mexico.

Still, it was the most successful Starship flight by far.

“It’s incredible to see how much further we got this time around,” Dan Huot, a SpaceX spokesman, said during the company’s live broadcast.

“This is just a phenomenal test so far,” SpaceX engineer Siva Bharadvaj said. “Super Heavy is performing beautifully today.”

With each flight, SpaceX has gotten better at flying Starship, learning from each test mission and then using the data that it collects to continue to tweak the vehicle’s hardware, software and ground systems.

“Each of these flight tests continue to be just that: a test,” SpaceX said in a statement before Thursday’s flight. “They aren’t occurring in a lab or on a test stand but are putting flight hardware in a flight environment to maximize learning.”

During the first flight in April 2023, several of the main engines failed during liftoff and more failed as it ascended. The force of the rocket blew up its launchpad and sent debris flying into the Texas shoreline. That triggered a lawsuit from environmentalists, who are concerned about the massive rocket’s impact on the surrounding area.

For the second flight , SpaceX installed a water deluge system to its pad, which dampened the blast, and made upgrades to the rocket’s engines. The vehicle made it through stage separation, and the upper-stage engines fired as well. But as the booster started to ignite 13 of its engines to fly the rocket back to Earth, one engine failed, “quickly cascading to a rapid unscheduled disassembly” — the phrase SpaceX uses to describe the loss of a vehicle. The spacecraft was lost after a leak led to a fire, and its autonomous onboard flight termination system destroyed the vehicle.

After the flight, the Federal Aviation Administration oversaw SpaceX’s investigation and said in February that it had accepted the company’s report. As a result, the FAA required SpaceX to complete 17 corrective actions, which included hardware redesigns, updates to engine-control algorithms and the installation of fire protection measures.

SpaceX said that “upgrades derived from the flight test will debut on the next Starship and Super Heavy vehicles.”

On this mission, SpaceX also tested opening and closing the payload doors through which it would deploy satellites to orbit. And because SpaceX intends to eventually refuel its Starship spacecraft while in orbit, the company also attempted to transfer propellant on this flight from one tank to another.

It was not immediately clear if those tests were successful. “We do still need to do some data review on those,” Bharadvaj said. “So as we get that data back, we’ll be sure to update you on social [media] for how those tests went.”

As the Starship spacecraft began reentering the atmosphere, cameras onboard the spacecraft showed images of the intense heat building up around the vehicle, engulfing it in a fireball. SpaceX had installed terminals for its Starlink internet satellite system on the spacecraft, which allowed for the stunning video to broadcast on its live stream until the heat finally overtook the system.

As expected, communication with the spacecraft was lost as it plunged through the thickening atmosphere. After a few minutes, however, SpaceX said the spacecraft — known as Ship 28 — did not survive reentry.

“We are making the call now that we have lost Ship 28,” he said. The company had hoped to fly the ship all the way to the surface of Indian Ocean, where it was expected to hit hard and explode.

It was unclear where exactly the ship was when the mission ended, but Jonathan McDowell, an astrophysicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics who tracks spacecraft, said his analysis showed that it probably was lost about 620 miles southeast of Mauritius over the Indian Ocean.

Still, the flight will give SpaceX engineers lots of information to review that they will use in the next flight.

“The further we could fly, and the more data we could collect, was always the biggest win,” SpaceX engineer Kate Tice said.

What to know about SpaceX’s Starship

The latest: SpaceX’s third test flight of Starship was the most successful so far. It made it to space and traveled more than halfway around the world before coming to a fiery end over the Indian Ocean.

Starship: SpaceX’s massive rocket is the world’s most powerful rocket , a towering two-stage vehicle that NASA intends to use to land astronauts on the moon .

Previous flights: Starship’s first test was hailed as a success , though the landing pad was damaged after the ship exploded . The second test Starship successfully had liftoff, sparing the launch pad, but exploded amid separation from the boosters .

SpaceX launches Starship rocket into orbit on test flight but loses spacecraft during return to Earth

SpaceX’s next-generation mega rocket launched Thursday morning, thundering into orbit on a key test flight meant to demonstrate new technologies and techniques that will be crucial on future missions to the moon and beyond.

The flight, held on the 22nd anniversary of SpaceX's founding, was the rocket’s third and most ambitious such test, according to the company. The event was closely watched because the nearly 400-foot-tall booster, known as Starship , is expected to play an important part in NASA’s return-to-the-moon program .

The rocket lifted off at 9:25 a.m. ET from SpaceX’s Starbase test site in Boca Chica, Texas. On this outing, SpaceX achieved two major milestones over previous Starship tests: The spacecraft successfully reached orbit, then re-entered Earth’s atmosphere for the first time more than 40 minutes later.

“This is the furthest and fastest that Starship has ever flown,” SpaceX officials said during their live broadcast of the event.

However, data suggests the spacecraft was lost while it returned to Earth, before it reached the splashdown in the Indian Ocean that SpaceX had hoped for.

After Thursday's test flight concluded, the Federal Aviation Administration said it was investigating a “mishap” involving the Starship vehicle and the rocket’s first-stage booster, known as Super Heavy.

“No public injuries or public property damage have been reported,” the agency said in a statement . “The FAA is overseeing the SpaceX-led mishap investigation to ensure the company complies with its FAA-approved mishap investigation plan and other regulatory requirements.”

The FAA will need to conclude its investigation and SpaceX will be required to take any corrective actions identified by the agency before Starship can fly again.

Despite the undesired ending, SpaceX called it a “phenomenal day.”

The company adjusted the targeted liftoff time Thursday morning, but Starship’s launch started smoothly. Roughly three minutes into flight, the Super Heavy first-stage booster successfully separated from the upper-stage Starship spacecraft.

However, Super Heavy did not accomplish a final burn as it fell back to Earth, causing it to splash down “hard” in the Gulf of Mexico, SpaceX said during its webcast.

SpaceX had also hoped to demonstrate several other processes and capabilities during the flight, including opening and closing the vehicle’s payload door and transferring propellant between two of Starship’s tanks in orbit. The company said it will need to analyze post-flight data to determine if those objectives were completed.

SpaceX also intended to fire one of Starship’s Raptor engines while in space, but it ultimately opted to skip that portion.

Many of the techniques attempted during Starship's third flight would help SpaceX carry out future missions to deploy satellites, as well as set the stage for moon missions as part of NASA’s Artemis program.

The company also said many of the objectives would help develop Starship into a fully reusable system. That is SpaceX's eventual plan, but it was not the intention for this test flight.

Starship was selected by NASA to carry astronauts to the lunar surface in the upcoming Artemis III mission, which could launch in 2026.

Starship's debut flight  last April ended when the rocket exploded several minutes after liftoff. A  second Starship launch  in November achieved several milestones, including separation of the first-stage booster and upper-stage spacecraft, but the  company lost contact with the vehicle shortly after.
