BROKER'S COMMENTS

The reputation for toughness of the early GRP Nic 32 and the 35 led to their widespread popularity and success at the smaller end of the yachting spectrum. Drawing on that - and evidently some panache inherited from much earlier Nicholson creations; the Nic 55 must be the success story at the larger end. Of the twenty six 55s built only two others; LUTINE and RACER shared QUAILO’s particularly beautiful configuration. Twelve were bought by the Ministry of Defence at a key period in replacing their ageing windfall fleet for adventurous training. Time and again thereafter they considered upgrading but each time concluded their 55s were irreplaceable. Various layouts were available including aft cockpit, centre-cockpit, sloop or yawl rig - conventional or retroussé stern. These boats have been proven over and over again with "ADVENTURE" 2nd in the first Round the World Race and "QUAILO III" formerly BROADSWORD an Admirals Cup and Southern Cross team member. QUAILO III is ready for more adventure; her cockpit is huge; she sleeps 10 and as we all know this design is so capable that she seems almost to prefer it when the going gets tough – all with unmistakable English good looks and an almost rakish charm.

- Commissioned for Don Parr as Admiral’s Cup contender - Competed Sydney Hobart 1973 - As BRITISH SOLDIER Joined JSASTC Gosport in mid 80s and renamed BROADSWORD - 2003 reverted to civilian ownership - 2011 renamed QUAILO III

“Navigare necesse est.. vivere non est necesse"

Camper & nicholsons yachts.

Camper & Nicholsons Yachts was founded in Gosport England in 1782. This yard became known for its fast wooden racing sailing yachts, which included the famed J-Class sloops that competed in the Americas Cup races.

Yachts designed and built by the C&N yard has a solid pedigree guaranteeing quality of build, seaworthiness, good sailing abilities and beauty.

C&N built 25 “Nic 55” during the period 1969 to 1975. S/Y Navigare was one of the last “Nic 55” built. The “Nic 55” yachts were very successful in ocean racing at the time. Some of these yachts were sold to the British military as sail training vessels and some competed in the Whitbread around the world races.

Detailed Information for S/Y Navigare

  • Price: Euro 150,000
  • Model type: Nicholson 55
  • Builder: Camper & Nicholson, Gosport, UK
  • Year of build: 1975
  • Sail plan: Yawl
  • Dimensions: L: 16,60m W: 4,4m D: 2,6m
  • Tonnage: 17ton (6 ton lead keel)
  • Genua Winches, Andersen, electric
  • All other winches Lewmar
  • Windlass, Lofrans, 24 volt
  • Bruce anchor with 100 meter chain
  • Two extra anchors, one of them Danforth
  • Sprayhood or dodger (new in 2017)
  • Winter awning (good condition, new in 2017)
  • Deck box in teak for shoes
  • Deck box in teak for gas bottles
  • Hoist for dinghy outboard
  • Dinghy (2017), fiberglass bottom
  • Spinacre boom in aluminium
  • There is an electrical “Opacmare” passarelle, which is fully functional and very practical since we are always mooring stern to. However the wood grating needs replacement.
  • There is a life raft mounted on the coach roof.

Sails & Rigging:

  • Mizzen and main sails (good condition)
  • Genua (Is being used, but soon due for replacement.)
  • Spinacre (OK condition)
  • Standing rigging (good visible condition but is planned to be replaced due to age, 17 years)
  • Running rigging (OK, was replaced in 2017)
  • The genua furling was purchased new from Selden in 2018
  • Main mast: Heavy duty mast from 1975 in aluminium. The travellers on the mast were replaced in 2017.
  • There is a “lazy bag” for the main, and covers for the main sail and mizzen.

Deck and superstructure:

  • Deck is teak and in good condition. (There is about 11mm thickness left in the teak deck.
  • The coach roofs are painted white on top and varnished teak veneer on the sides. (Planned work is to re-veneer the sides of the coach roofs midships and aft. The estimated cost is about Euro 5,000 to get it to “new” condition. It is OK now but looks a bit worn in many places.)

Stowage on deck:

  • There is a compartment in the bow housing a salt water wash down and extra anchor.
  • Just after the hatch in front there is the anchor locker
  • On the starboard side aft there is a teak box on deck where shoes are stored.
  • On the aft deck there is a hatch leading to a big lazarette.
  • In the cockpit there is a big stowage under the seat on the port side. It is about 1,5m deep.

The main engine

  • Is a 100 hp Yanmar diesel from 2004.
  • The engine was completely overhauled 2019 where all parts were replaced. Thus the engine is now brand new.
  • The yacht management company looking after the boat has switched on the engine once a week as part of their maintenance program.
  • The gearbox to the engine was purchased new in 2018.

Outboard engine

  • 4 hp outboard engine for the dinghy. (4 stroke)
  • This engine was purchased new in 2017 and has only been used in total less than two hours.

Whisper generator (stirling engine, built in New Zeeland)

  • This generator was new in 2003, but has very low hours. It however requires service before being used again.
  • This generator has its advantages as it is very silent (like a fridge).
  • It also has its disadvantages. For example it cost 30,000 euro 2003 and there is no competent person to service it in Turkey and Greece that I know of. The nearest official maintenance person lives in Germany. However in Marmaris there is a lot of  competence in yacht management and you can get almost anything done. They even managed to service this generator using; the instruction book, their common knowledge and wits…

Retractable bow-thruster.

  • This was installed in 2003 and works very well. However it is currently not working, needs servicing/repair.

Bilge pumps

  • The yacht has several bilge pumps, i.e. 2 manual pumps, 1 electric and 1 high capacity pump driven by the engine.
  • Fresh water tank 1,350 litres
  • Diesel tanks 600 litres
  • Black & grey water tank, 600 litres. This tank can be discharged by gravity into the ocean or through a pump out through a fitting in the deck. (I have not measured the tanks. The info was given by the previous owner and has not been verified.)

Navigational equipment:

  • Autopilot, Raymarine, purchased new in 2017
  • Silva instruments: GPS, Multifunction display, wind speed and direction display, echo-sounder and log. (These instruments are at least 23 years old but fully functioning. However the wind direction and speed meter is currently not working)
  • There is also a very old radar on board which I have never used.
  • The boat does not have a chart plotter. I have been using an Ipad with navigational program/maps/gps and weather information.
  • The boat has all or most hard copy charts for Greece and Turkey.
  • There are also Heikel’s pilot books for Greece and Turkey on board.

Communication equipment:

  • There is a stationary VHF radio at the nav. station below deck. There is also a short wave radio installed, which I have never used.

Electricity:

  • Victron 2000w inverter 800 amp service batteries (4 X 200 amp) giving 400 amps of 24 volt power
  • Two 12 volt starter batteries for engine
  • Connection for 220volts shore power on the aft deck.

Refridgeration:

  • There is one 24 volt water cooled compressor, chilling one fridge and two “coolers” in the galley.
  • There is one big fridge, 220 volt, under the settee in the saloon.
  • There is one freezer in the passageway from the saloon to the aft cabin.
  • The fiberglass hull is built like an “Ice breaker”. It is exceptionally strong, very thick and with stringers going along the sides of the boat. The boat is very silent inside due to the thickness of the hull.
  • A professional company in Bodrum made complete osmosis treatment of the hull in 2017 and also painted the top sides.

Layout of boat: (Front to back)

  • The interior is all in teak including the cabin sole and doors in good condition.
  • In the bow there is a double cabin with V-berth. The berth is a double berth when the retractable bow-thruster is down and two singles if the bow-thruster is up.
  • There are a lot of cupboards and stowage in this cabin.
  • The generator is also situated here. There are some steps leading through a hatch to the deck from here.
  • The cabin also has a pressurized hot and cold shower with a long hose, which we normally take out on deck when we want to shower “al fresco”.

Midships Cabin

  • Through a door from the fore peak there is the “midships” cabin.
  • This cabin has two beds on either side, one on top of the other (bunk bed).
  • There is a folding wall, which can be pulled in the middle to make it two separate cabins instead of one.
  • There is a direct access from this cabin to a head with shower. The lower bunks have Tempur matrasses.
  • Going further aft from this cabin you reach the galley, which has two sinks, fridge, two coolers and a 4 gas burner cooker, which is gimbaled.
  • Opposite the galley there is a head with shower. The head is electrical.
  • Further aft, up a couple of steps, is the saloon with a u-shaped sofa with table on the port side and the navigation table on the starboard side. From the saloon is the companion way up to the centre cockpit.
  • There is a passageway aft leading to the aft cabin.
  • In the passage way there is an opening to port leading to the engine room and on the starboard side is a lot of storage space plus a freezer.
  • The aft cabin has two single berths plus cupboards and vanity table.
  • The aft cabin also has a head (electrical) with a shower and pressurized hot and cold water. (This head is not working and needs replacement.)
  • The two berths have Tempur matrasses. There is a hatch in the coach roof for this cabin.

Ships registration:

  • S/Y Navigare is registered in the “Swedish Register of Shipping” and has the call sign SLTV.

Other information:

  • The boat is currently on the hard in the A1 Shipyard in Rhodes Town, Greece.
  • The Greek Dodocanese islands and the nearby Turkish coast line are very nice sailing areas filled with picturesque villages, many historical sites with many nice anchorages and good wind for sailing.
  • There are life wests, life lines and harnesses.
  • The boat is in working condition and we sailed in Greece and Turkey in July 2023.
  • I purchased the boat in year 2002 and have only used it 6 weeks on my vacation every year. I have never hired the boat out.
  • The yacht has a three blade folding propeller.
  • Electrical cables and all types of connections for shore power
  • Water hose long enough to cover washing the whole boat and to get fresh water into the tanks from shore connections
  • Bosun’s chair
  • Wind scoops for hatches
  • Cover for steering wheel
  • Handle for emergency rudder
  • Gas bottles for Greece and Turkey
  • Ball showing yacht at anchor
  • Wires to connect to dinghy for lifting onto deck

Owners Comments:

When I purchased the yacht in year 2002 I had been looking for my ideal boat for many years. I wanted a boat that was beautiful in a classical style, with exceptional sailing abilities and which was practical to live on for longer periods of time. My yacht S/Y Navigare has lived up to my expectations and provided a lot of wonderful sailing experiences with family and friends over the last 20 years. I have spent about 6 weeks every year during my annual vacation on the boat, except for the last few years when the boat has just been lying idle in Marmaris. The boat has never been hired out. Although the yacht has a fiberglass hull, it looks like it is a wooden boat, since the whole deck, superstructure and interior are covered with teak.

The yacht is exceptionally beautiful and turns heads wherever she goes. She sails very well. I have not yet met any modern boats, in her size, that beats this yacht’s performance upwind! She is also very practical to live on for long periods of time due to her large tank capacities. I am now 73 years old and the family is no longer joining me for sailing. It is therefore now time for me to sell the boat.

I have reduced the price from Euro 250,000 to Euro 150,000 to ensure a quick sale and also to reflect the issues mentioned above that needs fixing. The A1 shipyard, where the boat is, has the competence and capacity to fix all that need fixing.

EAGER | by Richard 999

Few racing yachts from the 1970s are as iconic as the Nicholson ("Nic" 55). EAGER started life in 1970 as the first Nic 55 built for Lloyds of London. All Nic 55s raced in their days and won regular podium finishes.   In the 90s Lloyds sold the yacht. She was named ACCLAIM by her new owner and continued her life as a successful racing yacht. In 2007, a yachting aficionado purchased the yacht. She was taken to Rutherfords Boat Shop in California, USA for a complete overhaul. This refit included stripping her to a bare hull, fitting her with a new deck and interior and fitting a new carbon rig and rudder. EAGER’s reconstruction aimed to recreate the yacht with modern technology and engineering without losing her essential character.   EAGER is an excellent opportunity to own part of the racing glory of the 1970s with a head turning, fast, go-anywhere performance yacht.   The inviting and practical interior of EAGER is in period styling and is finished to a very high level. The interior of EAGER has been executed in selected teak veneers with teak trim and doorframes. The exposed hull sides are finished in yellow cedar and the sole is teak. The forepeak accommodates a chain locker, a sail storage area and access to the windlass motor. EAGER has three staterooms, including a master with queen-size bed and two guest cabins.   The main salon incorporates the galley area. The galley is fully equipped with a U-shaped Corian counter top, double sinks, refrigeration with top and front door access and more. Opposite the galley is a large comfortable seating area around a teak table with access to a pop up TV unit. EAGER is a stylish family yacht suitable for weekend sailing or blue water cruising.     SPECIFICATION   Length16.41m Beam4.4m Draft2.54m Built1970 | 2009 ConstructionGRP Engines1 x Yanmar BuilderCamper & Nicholsons Exterior designerCamper & Nicholsons Interior designerCamper & Nicholsons ASKING PRICE   $750,000 USD

Was never a problem with people used to a bit of discomfort and of course less hull openings. If the skipper was a grumpy one, fiddling with the port primary winch that is right over the quarter berth was a good leveller. Click to expand...

I remember Lutine in her youth. Was she ever varnished or do I just remember a varnished transom?

A write up of life on board a service Ni 55. Leaving the Pillars of Hercules and the fleshpots of Gibraltar behind we headed out into the North Atlantic. A boisterous Force 6 on the nose gave us a wide awakening plus a good soaking as we clawed away from the coast. The skipper spotted a much larger ketch to seaward and the race was on. Harsh orders where barked for the yacht to be converted from sloop to cutter rig. The large jib , which had made a very comfortable double bed in harbour, was now dragged up on deck . The vicious highfield lever resembling a huge mousetrap slammed closed on the deck and the No 3 raised. However, it was all to no avail, the large ketch left us standing much to the disappointment of the skipper who promptly retired to his berth with his favourite green bottle of Gordons, to reminisce about the Southern Ocean and his now departed strong black plastic bucket we lost overboard, After a week of travelling south west with the weather improving each day, a volunteer was sought to fetch a loaf of bread from the lazarette. Now a Nicholson 55 may be a big yacht, but twelve crew are expected to live in a space no bigger than a four berth caravan. However, the huge lazarette takes up at least a third of the remaining boat . Accessed by a large hatch at the stern our volunteer lowered his way down into the dark and gloomy subterranean world. His eyes struggled to make out the vast range of stores kept for all sorts of emergencies. He crawled forward over a mountain of fenders and ropes as thick as his wrists towards a series of shelves before finally stumbling on his goal. The large orange sunblest basket did still contain loaves of bread, however, the smell reaching his nose told a sorry tale. For several days now the cook had been cutting off the mouldy crusts and combined with a long spell under the grill reducing the bread to charcoal meant the crew were blissfully unaware of what they were eating. As each loaf with green patterns and a pungent smell were raised out of the lazarette, the Mate declared them unfit and consigned them to Davy Jones’ Locker. Finally, with the tray empty the volunteer desperately scrabbled around in case one had been missed. Instead, he came across a large heavy black plastic sack and asked the Mate what it was. The Mate peering into the gloom said, “That is a body bag, put it back or you will be using it later!” The young crewman fearful of the Mate, quickly did as he was told. Pressing further into the darkness, the young sailor spotted another smaller plastic packet high up on a top shelf. Intrigued he pulled it down as his eyes just made out the words on the label. “BREAD MIX” Astonished he quickly called for the Mate again who asked for it be passed up on deck. The crew crowded round to see the exciting discovery. Faded and torn the label did indeed have the words ‘bread mix’ written in large bold print, an even longer naval part number and the familiar MOD crowfoot emblem. Finally, a date could just be made out, January 197- but the final digit was missing. The Skipper advised that it had probably been there for at least a decade but try it if you want. The package was quickly opened to reveal two smaller packets and a set of brief instructions. Mix Packet A with a quart of clean seawater until a smooth paste is achieved. Added Packet B and kneed thoroughly. Stand for one hour then bake until brown. The crew debated endlessly if the amount of salt in the seawater would be the correct for a loaf of bread but finally the packets where passed to the cook with a pan of seawater for the process to begin. After a while a tray containing a superb looking uncooked loaf appeared from the galley and was placed on the warm deck in the sun. Instructions from the cook not to touch it if you value your life! seemed genuine, so the crew went about there business careful to avoid the precious object. By teatime a superb smell of freshly baked bread wafted out of the companion way hatch as the ravenous crew licked there lips. The highlight that evening was dinner with a starter consisting of a thick beefy soup and two slices of bread each followed by a hot curry before the crew settled down to the long night watches. Despite several subsequent searches of the lazarette no further mysterious packages of bread mix could be found. The crew would now have to eek out meagre rations from tins until landfall in the Canaries and fresh bread was once again on the menu.

That's a great story. I wonder what the big ketch was, that could have left a Nic 55 far behind in a force 6 on the nose?

Two tanks, total one ton. Assuming it was dropped into the deep bilge, the Whale 25 next to the port quarter berth should have it overboard in about ten minutes, with all those fit Forces people to spell one another on the pump, but given where the tanks are, just abaft the mast step, I doubt if putting it OB actually helped.

Pete7 said: In theory it shouldn't have been a problem for the Nic rigged as a cutter, but the sails shall we say were well used, mostly resembling old bed sheets. Think the RAF had a ketch/yawl version in light blue, we trounced that one on a run from Weymouth back to Gosport, as you do. We were on British Soldier, later renamed Sabre a red hulled sloop. We worried about the pumps being constantly used on the RAF's Nic as we overhauled here. Later back home one of their crew said the skipper had emptied the water tank into the bilge and the crew pumped it overboard by hand to try and lighten the boat. They hand pumped a full tank with 1 tonne of water Click to expand...

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

nic 55 yacht

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

nic 55 yacht

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

nic 55 yacht

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

nic 55 yacht

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

nic 55 yacht

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

nic 55 yacht

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

nic 55 yacht

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

First Yacht Lutine (C&N 60')

A Laurent-Giles designed Bermudan yawl , built by Camper and Nicholsons in 1952 with yard number 784, she is 58 ft length overall with an 8.5' draft. [1] Now renamed Lutine of Helford. In 2014 Lutine I was listed for sale with an asking price of £339,000; the listing describes her as having been found "derelict" in 1999 and having undergone a complete rebuild before relaunch in 2001. She was evidently restored to excellent condition, and sold within a few months. [2] A model is displayed in the Lloyd's Register of Shipping offices in Southampton having been loaned by the LLYC Commodore.

Second Yacht Lutine (Nic 55)

nic 55 yacht

Ray Wall designed the Camper and Nicholsons 'Nic 55' which LLYC commissioned. Launched in 1970 with yard number 1016, she is a 53.8' Bermudan sloop, with 8.3' draft and displacing 23 tons. [3] Sold in 1999 and renamed Yacht Acclaim.

Acclaim was sold in August 2006 and taken to USA for an extensive rebuild and refit. Now renamed Eager with a 15 ft higher mast, it is back in the UK in her home port of Lymington on the Solent. [4]

Third Yacht Lutine (Swan)

A Germán Frers designed Nautor's Swan, 53' length overall, 8' draft, 22,000 lbs displacement sloop. [5]

Fourth Yacht Lutine (X-Yachts)

An X-Yachts designed X-55, 55' length overall, 10.5' draft sloop built in 2010 and purchased by the Lloyd's Yacht Club in 2014. [6]
