RS1 COLIN ARCHER

This is the official website for the famous norwegian rescue vessel "colin archer", built in rekkevik - norway in 1893 and served the norwegian sea rescue for 40 years. the vessel is still under sail and is owned for the last 50 years by the norwegian maritime museum in oslo. the sail cutter club colin archer has the responsibility for the daily maintenance and to keep the boat sailing. "colin archer" is probably the most famous floating norwegian boat in the world..

Tegning.jpg

1891 'Norsk Selskab til Skibbrudnes Redning, NSSR ("The Norwegian Society for Sea Rescue") was founded. A year later Colin Archer built the first rescue cutter. The result was a double-ender with a continuous deck. The length was 13.95 metres, beam 4.65 metres and draught 2.25 metres. Mainsail, mizzen, staysail, jib and a topsail made a total of 110 sq.metres. This prototype cost NOK 10.900,43, including beer for the workers.

At the launch in late July 1893 the ship was called after its designer, Colin Archer. 'RS1 Colin Archer' proved convincingly during her first season and became the prototype for every rescue cutter built in Norway over the next 30 years. After 40 years of loyal service, the prototype was sold. The ship had an impressive record: She had saved 67 ships, 236 people as well as assisting 1522 vessels carrying some 4500 crew.

In 1961 'RS1 Colin Archer' was found in America in a terrible condition after many years in private hands. She was brought back to Norway, and became a scout's boat for some years, but was finally acquired in 1972 by the Norwegian Maritime Museum. 1973 the museum concluded a long-term agreement with the Seilskøyteklubben Colin Archer (SSCA). Knut and Gunn von Trepka took over the day-to-day responsibility, and have devoted very much time to operating her as a living museum. The hull of 'RS1 Colin Archer' was comprehensively overhauled in 1977 and the interior was refurbished and restored to its original colours in 1993 with financial support from the Norwegian off-shore company Kværner.

'RS1 Colin Archer' ended Winner over All in the Cutty Sark Tall Ships' Race in 1983, leaving 74 ships behind. Also designed by Archer, the 'RS10 Christiania' ended second, and the Stephansen/Archer design 'RS5 Liv' came third. That this was no coincidence was proved in the next race in 1987, when the 'RS1 Colin Archer' again ended Winner over All and 'RS10 Christiania' was second best again. In 1993 'RS1 Colin Archer' ended Winner over All for the third time, and also took home the highest price of the Cutty Sark Tall ships' Races, The Cutty Sark Trophy.

Knut von Trepka (born 1940) is still strongly involved in the maintenance of the vessel. In 2011 his son Christian von Trepka (born 1967) and former crew Tor Erling Gransaether (born 1966) was appointed skippers by the owner, the Norwegian Maritime Museum.

In the Easter 2013, "RS1 Colin Archer" caught a severe fire, but fortunately repairable. After 12 months of repair and restauration at Maritime Center Fredrikstad AS, the boat was under sail again in the summer of 2014. As a true comeback after the fire, RS1 Colin Archer participated in the 4-days Tall Ships Race regatta from Harling, The Netherlands to Fredrikstad, Norway, winning both her class and the "Over All"-trophy, with more than 2 hours' margin to the second.

Keeping 'RS1 Colin Archer' in the water preserves for future generations not only the ship, but also the knowledge of how to sail her.

131 YEARS OF HISTORY

At the launch in late July 1893 the ship was called after its designer, Colin Archer. 'RS1 Colin Archer' proved convincingly during her first season and became the prototype for every rescue cutter built in Norway over the next 30 years.

IT'S ALL IN THE DETAILS

It is fascinating to learn that all of the boat's features, details and design are based on just one thing: Function. Nothing is there to make it look beautiful, it comes naturally.

Keeping 'RS1 Colin Archer' in the water preserves for future generations not only the ship, but also the knowledge of how to sail her.

Of Scottish descent, Colin Archer’s parents immigrated to Norway, where Archer himself was born in 1832. Early in his life, he spent time in Australia as a farmer and administrator before returning to Larvik, Noway, where he studied shipbuilding and married. In the early 1870s, Archer began reworking traditional Norwegian pilot boat design, eventually developing his Redningsskoyte design - a 47-foot rescue boat that became the template for the characteristic Colin Archer-type double-ended vessels— in 1892. Over his lifetime, Archer created more than fifty designs, including Fram, the polar vessel that, among other things, brought Amundsen to Antartica during his successful bid for the South Pole.

History of Colin Archer Yachts

Colin Archer Yachts has been synonymous with exceptional craftsmanship and world-class design since its inception in Norway in the late 19th century. The company was founded by Colin Archer, a Scottish-Norwegian naval architect who is best remembered for his distinctive double-enders – yachts and sailing vessels renowned for their exceptional seaworthiness and rugged construction. These timeless designs are still admired today, including his most famous design, the Redningsselskapet (Rescue), which was the prototype for the modern-day lifeboats.Post-establishing a successful reputation as a builder of exploration, merchant, and rescue boats, the shipyard later made a strategic shift to yacht manufacturing, bringing the same level of robustness and reliability to pleasure craft. Archer's construction standards and attention to detail set a high bar in the industry and helped establish Colin Archer Yachts as one of the most respected names in the marine world. Currently, Colin Archer Yachts continues to uphold the guiding principles of quality, design excellence, and craftsmanship that defined its founder's vision. The brand, still rooted firmly in its Norwegian beginnings, is celebrated worldwide, with many of its yachts considered collector's items, further cementing the company's status as a historical icon in the industry. Today, the original Colin Archer designs have inspired many reinterpretations by shipyards and designers around the globe, ensuring the enduring legacy of this iconic name in yacht building.

Legacy of Colin Archer is Still Alive and Kicking

colin archer sailboat

If you think your boat is a bear to maintain, you might take some consolation in this months used-boat review of the Union 36. It is a fiberglass boat, but considering the amount of teak on deck and belowdecks, it might as well be made of wood. Not that there is anything very wrong with that.

The 32-footer my wife Theresa and I cruised on for 11 years was very similar-a big, heavy double-ender-and ours was made of wood. While our 1937 William Atkin Thistle design differed significantly from the Union 36 and the modern double-enders that Bob Perry would later unveil (the Tayana 37 and Valiant 40, among the better known), these boats can be broadly traced to a common ancestor: the North Sea rescue boats designed by the renowned Norwegian naval architect Colin Archer.

While Atkins Thistle is clearly a derivative of Archer’s work, Perry’s boats diverge so sharply from this archetype that they deserve a different branch on the family tree. The longer waterlines, flatter hull sections, and increased volume in the canoe-shaped stern of Perry’s boats reduced some of the more annoying characteristics we noticed in our boat, Tosca -among them a tendency to hobby horse and roll at anchor. Perry’s changes also made the boat faster and more weatherly.

Few cruising designs are so rich in maritime lore as the double-ender. Archers famous first rescue boat RS1 is a museum piece, as are the boats of famous solo circumnavigators Argentinian Vito Dumas ( Lehg II ) and Sir Robin Knox-Johnston ( Suhaili ). The wave of home-built post WW-II cruisers inspired by John G. Hannas Tahiti and Carol ketches, Atkins Ingrid, and L. Francis Herreshoff’s Marco Polo, further raised the double-enders legendary status.

When the age of fiberglass finally took hold in the 1970s, William Crealock’s Westsail 32, a thinly veiled copy of Atkins designs, rightly earned its place as the boat that launched 1,000 dreams.

While the double-ended concept holds many advantages, there are significant tradeoffs, and it is wrong to assume that just because a boat has a pointy stern, it is inherently a safer cruising boat. When it comes to seaworthiness, quality of construction and maintenance record can be just as important as design lineage.

Among the greatest disadvantages of many of these boats is light-air performance and weatherliness. During Tosca’ s short hops in the Caribbean, these handicaps were striking, but once we set out west across the Pacific, we had no real complaints about the broader tacking angles and relatively sedate passages (average 112 miles per day). True, today we would opt for some more efficient and weatherly hull, but we still hold to the philosophy behind Colin Archers early designs: “Safety comes first.”

Ingrid 38 is a 47 ′ 0 ″ / 14.3 m monohull sailboat designed by William Atkin and Colin Archer and built by Bluewater Boat Company (USA) between 1938 and 1985.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds

From BlueWaterBoats.org :

The Ingrid 38 from the pen of William Atkin is a heavy displacement blue water ketch derived from Colin Archer’s famous double ender designs, which in turn were inspired by Viking boats renowned for their heavy weather characteristics. Perhaps Atkin sums it up by saying it’s “the kind of boat that behaves herself in rough water and can be depended upon to sail herself”. (To that part we do hear frequent mentions of the superb one-finger-on-tiller tracking and a comfortable ride.)

With her old world style she’s a good looking boat with a sheer line reminiscent of the Crealock’s famous Westsail 32 . Her seaworthiness is there to see in her full keel, heavy displacement and overbuilt construction. Her hull is heavily hand laid in fiberglass, there’s robust outboard chainplates and an outboard rudder protected by extra fiberglass and a large bronze shoe casting should she scrub the bottom.

Atkin’s main rework on the Ingrid 38 from Archer’s original design was a finer entry on the bow which ‘cushions’ her landing off the waves. Below the waterline she has a long full keel with deep v-sections forward keeping her stable in the rough. The ballast is encapsulated and is distributed from bow to stern, this helps her to avoid the pitching motion familiar to fin-keel sailors. Rounding this off, there’s plenty of flotation fore and aft which helps keep her dry.

The tradeoff heavy displacement and ultimate stability is usually in speed, the Ingrid 38 is not considered fast. Surprisingly she’s known to sail pretty well in light airs, owners reporting she’ll do half the wind speed up to 8 knots of wind. However, she’s a boat that comes into her own in heavier seas. By the numbers, her hull speed works out at 7.2 knots but she’ll more often manage a consistent 6 knots while cruising. The ketch rig gives plenty of options on all points of sail and she’s an easy boat to single-hand.

Around 1934 American naval architect William Atkin was bombarded with demands for a larger ketch-rigged version of the Thistle 31, a double-ender which he had recently released plans for. Atkin took the lines of Archer’s design and drew the plans for the Ingrid 38.

The first Ingrid 38s were privately built from wood, steel and cement from the plans, but it wasn’t until 1971 that production began in fiberglass by Blue Water Boats Inc (ironically located in a town called Woodinville in WA). The plug and mold for the first Ingrid was built by two Seattle sailors James Musser and Donald J. Pitblado working together, as the story goes, in a commercial chicken coop. James Musser’s original plan was to build Ingrid hull#1 and embark on a Pacific Ocean cruise but others were so impressed by his Ingrid Sandaldust  that they requested similar hulls from the mold. From this demand Blue Water Boats Inc. was born. His co-worker Donald J. Pitblado went on to become the owner of Ingrid hull #2 Donna Marie

In 1973 the company took on Jerry Husted, an experienced Puget Sound sailor, as an equal partner which allowed Musser and his wife to sailed off in  Sandaldust to live their Pacific dream. By 1974 Husted bought the balance of the shares and production of the Ingrid continued until about 1985 when the molds and patterns were sold off and were stored for a long time in Graham, WA. Around 1997-98 the molds were purchased by Bill Ingerson and he shifted them back to Woodinville in 2000 . Ingerson tried to get a few commitments for hulls but never got much interest at todays production costs.

The Ingrid 38 was produced at the rate of one a month for 10-12 years and there are thought to be around 143 of these boats in existence as well as those constructed from other materials. Many boats were bought as hull and deck kit sets from Blue Water Boats and finished by their owners to a variety of standards and configurations (including using cutter rigs).

A variation on the Ingrid 38 exists in the form the Alajuela 38 , her hull being a close derivative of the Ingrid, built to a very high standard and configured with a cutter rig.

Buyers Notes

The Ingrid 38 is no longer in production but there are usually several available on the used boat market, mainly in the US. Current asking prices are around $35k – $79k USD. Prospective owners are recommended to contact the Ingrid 38 owners group on yahoo.com for advice or information (link below).

A Colin Archer Ketch

Eric is 32 feet, 1 inch in overall length; 27 feet, 6 inches on the water line; 11 feet in breadth, and 5 feet draft. Freeboard at the bow is 4 feet, 6 inches; amidships 2 feet, 3 3/4 inches, and at the stern 3 feet, 4 inches. The displacement is 19,500 pounds; ballast on keel 4,700 pounds; trimming ballast 1,200 pounds. Eric is not a type of boat for the beginner to tackle and any such should confine their efforts and labor to some of the simpler and more elementary designs which have been published previously, or which will follow later in this series.

The lines show a typical Colin Archer Norwegian lifeboat of the type used by the fishermen and pilots of the North Sea, but the rig and the arrangement of the deck and interior are after the manner of American practice.

There are two sail plans provided. The old time gaff-head sails, and a taller jib-head rig. If I were going off on deep water I should by all means retain the gaff rig. It is lower, more easily kept in order, less costly, and in beautiful keeping with the design of the hull. On the other hand if the boat will be used, as most boats are, on protected water the jib-head sail plan is an excellent choice. Theoretically the latter should be rather faster under sail. It will be noticed that the taller rig has a sail area of 726 square feet against 588 square feet for the gaff head rig.

The cabin is laid out for a party of four and has full 6-foot headroom throughout. The galley is in the after end of the deckhouse and contains an ice box of generous capacity, sink, Shipmate coal range, lockers, and all the equipment required for easy and happy living. The toilet room is opposite the galley, 3 feet, 4 inches long and nicely fitted out. The main cabin shows two transoms and built-in high bunk beneath which are drawers and lockers, big useful lockers, too. Notice one transom is 24 inches wide and is to be used as a berth, the opposite one being a sofa. It is interesting to observe that the distance between the transom fronts is a full 3 feet and that the floor width is the same. This is not a cabin in which one walks through a narrow gutter of a floor laid directly on the tops of the floor timbers. Two big hanging lockers supply storage space for clothes, and supplies. The forward stateroom is fitted with double built-in berths with open lockers beneath and built-in seat. With shelves fitted up under the clamps and the bow locker there is excellent room for stowing miscellaneous gear, etc.

The motor as is usual with most auxiliaries is installed under the cockpit floor and is readily accessible from the galley. I should not go in for too much power. A motor of approximately 180 cubic inch cylinder displacement is ample for a speed of 7 miles an hour.

The Colin Archer signature features are the canoe stern and quite exaggerated beam with a hard turn to the full bilge to give the hull buoyancy and a fine shape. As well as his working boats, Colin Archer designed a number of yachts which are remarkably fast under sails. OCTOBER is one of these, designed by Arne Hedlund who took his inspiration from the great Archer originals. The final result is a unique and a very good quality yacht built in 1978 at Sakskobing Boatyard in Denmark. Her first owner Per Moller commissioned the boat with the intention to sail around the world, though he never quite achieved his goal. Anyway she has shown her perfect performance even in light airs and a sense of security in the roughest conditions. Now October is offered in good conditions and equipped for blue water sailing.
