Iconic yachts: The story of the 88m sailing yacht Maltese Falcon

Tom Perkins created one of the most sensational three-masted sailing yachts of the past 100 years when he built the 88 metre Maltese Falcon with Perini Navi .

Launched in 2006, the project took nearly six years to complete. With radical unstayed masts made of 'weapons-grade' carbon fibre, computerised sail and mast control system, M a ltese Falcon, and in particular its FalconRig, was hailed as a triumph of design, development and engineering.

The great idea of the clipper rig is that a huge sail area, 2,415 metres square, in this case, can be spread over 15 sails, thus greatly reducing the loadings. On Maltese Falcon there are a total of 25 sails, giving her 10 spare.

One of the most exciting aspects of Maltese Falcon is the yacht's upwind performance. "We sail as close to the wind as any yacht, of any design, that has more than one mast," Perkins previously said. He went on to describe the mast and sail control system as 'almost trivial' in its simplicity. "I can teach any sailor how to handle the yacht in five minutes," he said. "To the best of my knowledge, this is not the case with any other big boat with reel winches."

The superyacht's 'luxury machine' interior - a marriage of industrial chic and high tech - was designed by Ken Freivokh around Tom Perkins' striking modern art collection , and features leather, glass, wood and steel. The layout includes a master suite and five further guest cabins, and the crew of 16 is accommodated in eight cabins.

Her long and relatively narrow hull was designed be very fast through the water, and her very long waterline 78 metres assures stability against heeling. The sails, made by Robbie Doyle, are stored on individual in-mast mandrels and set and furled using a complex but brilliant system that makes use of a large number of electric motors within the masts and on the yards.

In 2009, Perkins sold Maltese Falcon to hedge-fund manager Elena Ambrosiadou. The yacht is now available for charter with SuperYachtsMonaco from €460,000 a week.

127m sailing yacht KORU successfully delivered by Oceanco

By Steph Loseby   11 April 2023

Commissioned by entrepreneur and Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos, the 3-masted 127m (416ft) schooner KORU , known throughout the build as Project Y721, has been successfully delivered by Oceanco .

Boasting a striking black hull with a distinctive red stripe running along her waterline, sailing yacht KORU’s exterior styling mirrors a traditional schooner style with an elongated bowsprite and canoe stern. She reportedly takes her design cues from  Lürssen 's 93m (304ft) sailing yacht EOS , thought to be inspired by the entrepreneur’s visits to this yacht in previous years.

Although much of her build has been shrouded in secrecy, Oceanco's newest yacht is understood to have an internal volume of 3,300 GT and will undoubtedly offer a wealth of luxurious accommodation and amenities.

KORU offers the last word in innovative design

While her design team has yet to be confirmed, we know the 127m yacht features an aft dip pool, a further Jacuzzi on her flybridge, and multiple areas for relaxing across her open decks.

The sailing yacht will be supported by the 75m (247ft) Damen yacht ABEONA , which was delivered in February this year. Damen Yachting 's largest-ever support yacht ABEONA  holds the great responsibility of carrying KORU’s larger toys, including a submarine and a helicopter.

Some say that superyacht KORU is now the world's largest sailing yacht, but this depends on whether you call Nobiskrug’s 143m (469ft) sailing yacht A a sailing yacht. Some would argue she is a sail-assisted motor yacht , yet others claim her to be the largest sailing yacht in the world, including her builder Nobiskrug who states Sailing Yacht A “is the largest of her kind.”

Whether you believe her to be the largest or second-largest sailing yacht in the world, KORU is guaranteed to head-turn wherever she goes.

She departed Oceanco's facilities on April 6 and has now passed Gibraltar, cruising underway at a speed of 13 knots.

Atlantic, the fastest schooner on the Atlantic for nearly 100 years

3 masted yacht

In 1903, the schooner Atlantic left an American shipyard on behalf of its owner, Wilson Marshall. Both luxurious and very fast, she became a legend in 1905 by winning the record for crossing the Atlantic from west to east. A performance that remained intact for almost 100 years.

Chloé Torterat

The birth of the schooner Atlantic

The Atlantic is a three-masted schooner , built in the early 20th century for Wilson Marshall, a prominent member of the New York Yacht Club. Designed by William Gardner, one of the most renowned American naval architects of the time, she was built at the Townsend & Downey shipyard on the uninhabited Shooters Island in New York.

The long black steel hull, 56.39 m (185 feet) long and only 8.85 m (29.02 feet) wide, was launched on July 28, 1903. Its masts are 45 m (150 ft) high above the waterline and support an impressive 1750 m2 (1,750 m2) of sail area.

3 masted yacht

Performance combined with luxury

With its slender lines and narrow midship beam compared to its length (41.15 m at the waterline), Atlantic promises unparalleled speeds. A promise that was quickly confirmed by the first sailors who posted peaks at 20 n?uds?! Who would have thought that two years later she would become the fastest boat to cross the Atlantic.

If he wants his boat to be fast, Wilson Marshall doesn't want to compromise on comfort. So, unlike contemporary schooners, Atlantic is all luxury on board. Mahogany panels, refrigerators, a large galley, electric lights powered by two steam generators are just some of the features of the boat . Steam was also used to power the 36 winches in bronze?!

3 masted yacht

On board there are two double and three single cabins, a splendid saloon/dining room, a very large chart table and three large bathrooms - the owner's with bathtub. Access on board is at the bow for the crew and at the stern via the "Deck House" for the guests, a sort of vestibule.

The retractable steam evacuation chimneys allowed to keep all the onboard conveniences, even while sailing (heating, lighting, refrigeration...). 39 crew members lived on board throughout the year.

The king of regattas

For its first season, the Atlantic proved to be very fast and won Breton Reef and the Cape May Cup hands down. But it wasn't until 1905 that the schooner made headlines and forever marked sailing history by winning the Kaiser's Cup, a transatlantic race between Sandy Hook, on the coast of New Jersey (US) and Cape Lizard, in Cornwall.

3 masted yacht

The Kaiser's Cup record

In 1905, the German Emperor William II decided to create the first transatlantic crossing from west to east, between the United States and England. A total of 11 yachts belonging to wealthy American and British shipowners took the start of this new race. The winner will be awarded a solid gold cup, which according to rumours was in the end only a "knock-off" trophy. The schooner Atlantic is of course there, but also Hamburg, the Kaiser's sailing ship.

Wilson Marshall entrusted the helm of his elegant sailboat to "Captain Charlie Barr". This professional Scottish sailor - naturalized American - enjoys an incredible reputation and boasts the distinction of being the first three-time winner of the America's Cup (1899, 1901 and 1903).

With a crew of 50 men, Charlie Barr - renowned for pushing his boats 100% - is making an express Atlantic crossing. He made the schooner a legend by setting many records in stone. A crossing of 3006 miles in 12 days, 4 hours, 1 minute and 19 seconds and the distance record in 24 hours with 341 miles covered at an average speed of 14.1 knots.

3 masted yacht

A 75-year record

For 75 years and despite many attempts, this Atlantic crossing record remains undefeated. It was a certain Éric Tabarly at the helm of his trimaran Paul Ricard who brought it down in 1980. With three crew members, he completed the crossing in 10 days, 5 hours, 14 minutes and 20 seconds.

However, we still have to wait nearly 100 years (93 to be exact) for a monohull to beat the Atlantic record . It was an 80-foot (24.5 m) monohull named Nicorette (later renamed Skandia), which completed a crossing in 11 days, 13 hours, 22 minutes and 4 seconds while taking part in the Round Gotland Race.

Jeff Bezos’ New Yacht Is Finally Ready to Set Sail

Amazon’s founder has been spotted on Koru, a massive schooner with a design that evokes the golden age of sailing in the early 20th century.

Koru, a very large sailboat with three masts and a dark navy hull, sails on a calm blue sea.

By Kevin Koenig

Just in time for the high season of yachting in the Mediterranean, when multimillion-dollar megayachts descend on ports like Monte Carlo and St. Tropez, Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, has been photographed with his partner Lauren Sánchez on his new boat, Koru, off the coast of Spain.

Mr. Bezos’ vessel is a sailing yacht, a departure from the diesel-powered, floating palaces popular with other billionaires. But it is still massive. At 417 feet, Koru is the world’s largest sailing yacht, according to Boat International , and it cost an estimated $500 million to build, Bloomberg reported . (Parsifal III, the boat featured on Bravo’s reality series “Below Deck Sailing Yacht,” is 177 feet long — less than half the length of Koru — and cost $18 million , according to the website SuperYachtFan.)

A spokesperson for Mr. Bezos did not comment for this article; neither did Oceanco, Koru’s builder. Here is what to know about the boat.

For traditionalists, Koru is refreshing. At a time when yacht design skews outrageous — see the lizardlike, 262-foot Artefact or the otherworldly 463-foot Yas — Koru stands out as a schooner, a sailing vessel with two or more masts. Photos reveal a large sailboat with three masts, an on-deck pool and a voluptuous mermaid on the bow, that bears a resemblance to Ms. Sánchez. But otherwise, the sleek, classic lines suggest the patrician age of yachting in the early 20th century, said Robert B. MacKay, author of “The Golden Age of Newport Yachting: Between the Wars.”

“With the clipper bow and the dark hull and the masts,” Mr. MacKay said, referring to Koru’s concave, pointy forward section, “it reminds me of a boat built in 1930 for J.P. Morgan Jr., Corsair IV. It is almost like a reincarnation. It’s certainly at odds with the stuff the oligarchs are building — those look like bloated Clorox bottles.”

Compared with the world’s very largest motor yachts — built for sheer size and the accompanying bragging rights — Koru could almost be considered quaint. Azzam, one of the world’s largest motor yachts, is nearly 200 feet longer.

The Experience

Koru will be propelled primarily by the wind. “Sailboats are usually greener than most powerboats,” said Don Anderson, a former captain of M5 , the world’s largest single-masted sailboat, at 256 feet. “I’d like to think that Koru will be one of the most ecological yachts out there, with its sails and also with the technology that will be aboard.”

“When you’re on a sailboat, you’re more in touch with the wind and the waves than on a powerboat,” he continued. “You’re more susceptible to the elements, too. But you can leave California, and once you get past the Catalinas you can basically surf downwind all the way to Hawaii. All you need to do is run with the waves.”

Mr. Bezos has been a guest on similar boats, according to Bloomberg: In 2019, he was spotted on Eos , a 305-foot sailing yacht owned by Barry Diller and Diane von Furstenberg.

Bill Tripp, a Connecticut-based naval architect, said the appeal of this type of boat is clear: “When you are on a powerboat, you ask, ‘Are we there yet?’ and on a sailboat, you’re enjoying the ride and the ocean so much that you don’t ask that question.”

Koru will be trailed by Abeona, a 246-foot support vessel. Superyachts often have support vessels following along behind them. These “shadows,” as they are colloquially known, are for the “toys” — the ATVs, supercars, seaplanes, motorcycles, smaller boats, scuba gear, personal submarines and even helicopters that pleasure boaters might bring on a trip. According to its builder, this model of boat can carry these gadgets along with dozens of crew members. (Ms. Sanchez flies helicopters, and the couple was recently photographed taking a helicopter to board Abeona and then Koru.)

Abeona, a motor yacht, will have enough range to follow Koru from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean — a common course for yachts — on a single tank of gas.

The Kerfuffle

Koru set off a controversy last year — before it was even completed — in a face-off with the Dutch city of Rotterdam. The boat was built at Oceanco’s facility in Alblasserdam, the Netherlands, and needed to pass the historic Koningshaven Bridge, known as “De Hef,” in Rotterdam, to undergo testing in the North Sea.

When the city announced it would dismantle the bridge to allow the boat and its mainmast — an estimated 230 feet tall — to pass through unscathed, locals were angry. They planned a protest to throw eggs at the yacht as it cruised by. In the end, the bridge was not taken apart, and the yacht was towed to a different location to have its masts attached.

Koru is Maori for “coil” or “loop” and refers to the unfurling of a fern frond. The koru design is common in traditional Maori art, where it symbolizes new life, growth and peace. Mr. Bezos included a photo of a koru frond in an Instagram post on Jan. 1, 2022.

Brad Stone, who was the first to report on Koru, in his 2021 book “Amazon Unbound: Jeff Bezos and the Invention of a Global Empire,” said the name was “consistent with where we see him today.”

“He is no longer this single-minded tech guy,” Mr. Stone said. “He’s in media and Hollywood and has a new relationship.”

A perfect replica of the three masted Schooner Atlantic, originally built to make the speed record of the Atlantic Crossing, which she did...

The Schooner Atlantic replicates the allure of the original three masted schooner built in 1903 and commissioned by the New York Yacht Club. While having the luxurious comfort of a modern yacht, she keeps the original charme and elegance, fulfilling the owners' expectations and those of anyone passionate about classic yachts. A fast, elegant, seaworthy three masted schooner that turns everybody's eyes, anywhere she sails. Don't miss the chance to charter Atlantic at least once in your life

3 masted yacht

The Schooner Atlantic can comfotably accommodate 12 guests in 3 staterooms with double bed and 3 staterooms with twin bed, all with en-suite bathrooms, including a large owner’s cabin with large double bed and an ensuite bathroom featuring a bathtub. She is sailed by her Captain plus 11 crew.

Commissioned by New York Yacht Club member Wilson Marshall, the Schooner Atlantic was launched in 1903. She was designed by William Gardner, one of America's foremost designers of large yachts.

From the moment Atlantic went to sea, it was clear that she was an exceptionally fast and beautiful schooner. When a yacht in 1903 hits twenty knots during her sea trials, she is a promising yacht, but even then nobody could imagine two years later this yacht would set a record that would stand unmatched for almost a century.

Nevertheless, whilst Wilson Marshall wanted Atlantic to be the fastest schooner on the water, he felt there was no reason to compromise on comfort. Unlike contemporary racing schooners, Atlantic was equipped with every imaginable luxury. Fitted out with the finest mahogany panelling, she had two steam driven generators to power electric lights, refrigerators and a large galley. On deck her halyard winches and primary sheet winches were also steam driven. She had two double and three single staterooms, a lobby, a large full beam saloon, a dining room, a chart & gunroom, three large bathrooms and in the deckhouse there was a comfortable observation room. She had retractable chimneys, so while under sail the below deck steam heating, lighting and refrigeration systems could keep running. Atlantic's fo'c'sle accommodated her thirty-nine strong crew and officers, who would live aboard throughout the year.

Kaiser Wilhelm II The Kaiser's Cup

During her first season Atlantic proved fast, winning both the Brenton Reef and the Cape May Cup hands down, but it was only in 1905 she made the headlines by winning the Kaiser's Cup, a Transatlantic race from Sandy Hook to the Lizard. Referred to as "The last Great race of Princes" the entries for this race included all the yachts that the rich and powerful from Britain and America could send to sea.

BROKER'S COMMENTS

ATLANTIC was the ultimate classic yacht - winner of everything that was worth winning in her day. This wonderful re-creation by Ed Kastelein is the crowning glory of three such projects he has undertaken. Chartered for the last three years by an important shipping magnate, she is now for sale. This is an absolutely outstanding yacht.

Captain's Comments

ATLANTIC has been world cruising since 2014 under Captain Jim Thom. Among countless amazing experiences, he recalls some special moments when her charms and abilities shone through to even the most experienced of captains... “An impression that really stands out was one I and the crew of ATLANTIC had when sailing back directly from New Zealand to Panama: 7000 miles in 31 days. We left in April and sailed south of Easter Island between 35 and 39 degrees, piggy-backing and skirting the low pressure systems as they swept across the South Pacific - a lot of reaching and broad reaching. We weren't racing by any stretch; we were actually sailing very conservatively. At one stage we even had to heave-to for 36 hours because there was no wind: we just parked the boat, 2000 miles from New Zealand and 2000 miles from Easter Island. The albatross that had been following us for the past couple of days also just landed and sat in the water next to us till the breeze came back! “When it did come we really took off, averaging 12 knots for 16 days and that included sailing into the trade winds where they aren't so strong. What ATLANTIC showed us was that with her long, narrow, easily driven hull shape she would just hurtle along. There were days when we were doing 14-15 knots all day. I would come up on deck to see if everything was OK, check the weather, the size of the waves and if the crew were alright. They were a young bunch and I would find them simply chatting away as they steered, talking over their shoulders while driving along. I would say, 'Please just look in the right direction'. But that was the level of confidence they had in this boat. I told them they didn't know how good this was: 'I know you are enjoying yourselves, but this is the sail of my life and the sail of your life as well; you just don't know it yet!' “I went down below to see how everyone was getting on. At this point we were hurtling along in fairly good sized waves, but the guys in the crew mess were watching TV or reading books as if they were home. The boat felt completely solid. That trip to me epitomised what ATLANTIC is. She has these incredibly long legs and this very good sea-keeping hull shape with a beautiful fine entry. She just ate up the miles relentlessly without straining any muscles. That was our strongest feeling of her. "The other abiding sensation of the yacht was of strength. Strength of the hull and strength of the rig. When we had the rig serviced in New Zealand the riggers were amazed at the strength and the redundancy in the rigging. They said the masts were so strong they didn't need shrouds! That they would never come down. And that was our feeling as well when we were sailing. It was all so rock solid. She gives this great sensation of strength and ability, and mile-eating speed, and comfort when you are under sail."

History Notes on the original ATLANTIC

Commissioned by New York Yacht Club member Wilson Marshall, ATLANTIC was launched in 1903. During her first season ATLANTIC proved fast, winning both the Brenton Reef and the Cape May Cup hands down, but it was only in 1905 she made the headlines by winning the Kaiser's Cup, a Transatlantic race from Sandy Hook to the Lizard. Referred to as "The last Great race of Princes", the entries for this race included all the yachts that the rich and powerful from Britain and America could send to sea. The legendary Captain Charlie Barr, who had already successfully defended the America's Cup three times, was hired to skipper ATLANTIC. Charlie Barr's determination to win was as legendary as his skills for driving the largest of yachts to the very limit. And win, he did, sailing 3006 miles in 12 days, 4 hours, 1 minute and 19 seconds. ATLANTIC's 24-hour record was 341 miles, an average speed of 14,1 knots. Uncountable attempts were made to break this record but it would hold firm until 1998, the longest standing speed record in the history of yachting. . ATLANTIC's story continued for another seventy-seven years with ownership passing through the likes of Cornelius van der Bilt and Gerald Lambert. She was used as a mother ship for other racing yachts like Vanity, for America's Cup defenders and the J-Class Yankee on her voyage to England. Her guest book included the rich and famous of the world. Simply put, she is the most famous and beloved racing schooner of all time. Although after World War II ATLANTIC would never sail again, she refused to give up her existence. Somehow she was saved from the scrap yard on three different occasions, broke loose from her moorings, to sail back to sea without a man aboard and ended up used as a houseboat, a restaurant and a floating dock at a fuel station. Finally, on 30th of January 1982, she was broken up at Newport News Boat Harbor, Virginia.

Biggest three-masted schooner of the Netherlands

You sail together on the Eendracht. Everyone – but especially young people – let sea sailing experience that is central to the Netherlands’ largest three-masted schooner. In addition to the programs for young people and special projects, Stichting Zeilschip Eendracht offers various trips for a wider audience.

Individual trainers can join, they have a wide choice of day trips and multi-day trips. Companies and groups can rent the ship for a cruise, reception or event. The Eendracht can therefore continue to focus on the objective. The hospitality of the professional and largely voluntary crew and tasty care from the galley are the ingredients for an unforgettable journey!

De Eendracht has a rich history dating back to October 5, 1938. In the thirties, motorized shipping nearly pushed professional sailing. A change that many people were worried about, because the knowledge of sea sailing was lost and with it the valuable cooperation that leads to team spirit and perseverance.

The founding fathers of the Eendracht have retained training opportunities on a large sailing ship with the establishment of the National Association ‘Het Zeilend Schoolschip’. The initiator and first chairman was Mr. C.J. Jaski. Scion from a famous sailor family and from Schiermonnikoog. In 2010 his name is still connected to the Eendracht. His immediate family member Mr. B. Jaski is the current chairman of the Sailing ship Eendracht. foundation.

Due to the Second World War and its economic consequences, the construction of a private sailing ship was delayed. Thanks in particular to the many volunteers and the support of patron Z.K.H. Prins Bernhard, the first Eendracht was launched in 1974. The current ship, the three-masted schooner, was baptized on 29 August 1989 by Her Majesty Queen Beatrix. The discovery of the elements of the sea is still central.

3 masted yacht

85 m 3-masted Schooner

A fascinating consequence of the demise of the cruise ship industry during the COVID-19 pandemic has been an attempt to bridge the gap between the private superyacht charter market and that of the ubiquitous cruise liner. HDNA has been asked to design an 85m three-masted schooner to be built in steel with aluminium spars for economy. Built to the Passenger Yacht Code she will be capable of accommodating 36 paying guests in genuine luxury. With extensive sun bathing and on-deck seating areas, a spa and two topsides opening doors to form balconies, she will have many appealing features and be able offer a genuine sailing experience with guest involvement. Hybrid diesel electric propulsion will be part of hydrogeneration capability provided by her free-wheeling propeller when sailing at her anticipated 18-20 knots.

These 3 lesser-known cruise lines offer amazing voyages on sail-powered ships

There is nothing quite as magical — or romantic — as a cruise on a sailing ship.

To stand on the deck of a vessel topped with dozens of billowing sails, propelled through the waves by the power of the wind alone, is to go back in time to an earlier age of travel, when crossing the world's oceans was as adventurous as it was challenging.

It's an experience that's all about the feeling of the wind in your hair, the lean of the vessel (known as the heel) as it's pushed by the wind and the sway from the waves (which is actually smoother than what you get on a motor ship).

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

In contrast to what you'll find on so many motor-powered ships, cruising on a masted ship is about the simple thrill of traveling across the sea and not about all the many attractions you'll find on board.

Only a handful of small cruise brands — so small that you might never have heard of them — offer trips on sailing ships. Here, we look at the three biggest players in this niche subset of the cruise industry.

Sea Cloud Cruises

If it's an authentic, old-style sailing experience you want, then Sea Cloud Cruises is the line for you. The Germany-based company operates three large sailing ships where the sails are unfurled by hand, just as they were on sailing ships centuries ago.

On the biggest of these three vessels, the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit , 18 deckhands scurry high into the rigging on sea days to manually untie and prepare the sails, an amazing sight. Unveiled in 2021 , it's a full-rigged, three-masted sailing ship of the sort that hasn't been common on the world's oceans for more than a century.

Related: Why Sea Cloud Spirit is a sailing vessel you'll want to try

Sea Cloud Cruises' two other vessels — Sea Cloud 2 and Sea Cloud — are smaller but offer a similar show as the sails are set by hand the old-fashioned way. The former is a 23-year-old, three-masted barque propelled by 23 sails (five fewer than Sea Cloud Spirit); the latter is a 93-year-old, four-masted barque with 30 sails and a storied past.

Now configured to carry 64 paying passengers, Sea Cloud was originally the private yacht of Postum Cereals heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post and her husband, the famed financier E. F. Hutton. At the time, the vessel was the largest private yacht in the world. It later served the U.S. Navy as a weather ship during World War II, after which it became the presidential yacht for the Dominican Republic. It only began sailing as a cruise vessel in the 1980s.

If you have money to spare, you can still book Post's opulent private quarters on Sea Cloud, now its owner's suite. It'll set you back around $5,000 per day per couple. Her husband's slightly smaller quarters are also available to book at a similar rate.

Post, the wealthiest woman in the U.S. during her lifetime, notably also built Mar-a-Lago, the massive estate in Florida that is now the official residence of Donald Trump.

Sea Cloud Cruises is the most all-inclusive and upscale of the three brands listed in this story, with pricing to match. Expect to pay nearly $1,000 per person per day or more for many sailings.

Sea Cloud Cruises' three vessels offer a diverse array of sailings in the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, the Canary Islands and Morocco, the Caribbean or along the west coast of Central America.

Windstar Cruises

Founded in the 1980s, Windstar Cruises got its start as a sailing ship line. While it now operates traditional motor-powered ships, too, voyages on sailing ships are still a big part of its business.

Three of the Seattle-based brand's six vessels — Wind Spirit, Wind Star and Wind Surf — are sailing vessels, and they all offer a similar yacht-like, small-ship experience.

Two of the three vessels (Wind Spirit and Wind Star) are particularly intimate, measuring 5,407 tons and carrying just 148 passengers with every berth full.

Related: The 2 types of Windstar ships, explained

The line's third sailing vessel, Wind Surf, is nearly three times the size at 14,745 tons. It's one of the biggest sailing ships in the world (only a sister vessel that sails for Club Med is bigger). Wind Surf carries 342 people, an enormous number for a sailing ship.

Unlike on the vessels operated by Sea Cloud, the sails on Windstar's sailing ships aren't unfurled by hand in the old-fashioned way but by the push of a button from the bridge. It's a fully automated system that is much more modern, if less dramatic.

Still, the experience of slicing through the waves by the power of the wind alone on Windstar ships is as glorious and romantic as it is on the Sea Cloud ships.

Windstar Cruises is less all-inclusive and pricey than Sea Cloud but still offers a relatively upscale experience. Its dining program is done in partnership with the food-focused James Beard Foundation, which also brings James Beard Award-winning chefs to the ships regularly for food-themed itineraries.

For an extra $89 per person per day, passengers can also make the experience more all-inclusive with included Wi-Fi, unlimited beer, wine and cocktails, and gratuities (three things that aren't included in regular fares).

The line's three vessels typically spend nearly all of their time sailing in the Mediterranean, the Caribbean or along the west coast of Central America.

Star Clippers

Like Sea Cloud and Windstar, Star Clippers operates three sailing vessels that are among the biggest and most elegant sailing vessels in the world.

The belle of the ball at the line is Royal Clipper, a stunning five-masted ship that is billed as the largest square-rigged ship in the world. Its enormous array of 42 sails has a sail area of 56,000 square feet — significantly more than the sails atop any of the Sea Cloud or Windstar vessels. (Only Sea Cloud Spirit comes relatively close with a sail area of 44,100 square feet spread across 28 sails.)

Built to resemble Preussen, a legendary tall ship of the 19th century, the 24-year-old Royal Clipper shares the spotlight at Star Clippers with two smaller sister vessels, Star Flyer and Star Clipper.

Carrying 166 passengers apiece, the smaller vessels were designed to resemble the speedy clipper ships of the 19th century, which were known for their narrow profile and large sail area. Each vessel has a sail area of 36,000 square feet spread across 16 sails, a large amount for the size.

When it comes to the setting of sails, Star Clippers vessels offer a level of old-style authenticity that is in between the ships of Sea Cloud and Windstar. Like on Sea Cloud vessels, the sails are pulled into position by a team of deckhands using hand power and winches to tighten the "sheets," or ropes.

Unlike on Sea Cloud vessels, the deck hands don't climb high into the rigging to untie and prepare the sails for winching. That part is done automatically at the push of a button from the bridge, as it is on Windstar vessels.

In one key difference, though, Star Clippers lets passengers harness up and climb into the crow's nest of its vessels — a thrilling experience. Just be prepared for your knees to go a bit wobbly as you get to the top; it's way up there.

Star Clippers sailings are the most affordable option among the three sailing brands, in part because the onboard experience is less all-inclusive and upscale.

The three Star Clippers vessels mostly operate sailings in the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands, the Caribbean and along the west coast of Central America.

Bottom line

It's still possible to get a taste of what traveling the world's oceans was like in the days before motor power. Three small cruise companies — Sea Cloud Cruises, Windstar Cruises and Star Clippers — offer voyages on large sailing ships that are as majestic as anything that has sailed the seas in centuries past.
