A ketch is a two-mast sailboat similar to a yawl. The mainmast is shorter than a sloop, and the mizzenmast aft is shorter than the mainmast. A ketch usually has a triangular mizzen sail and a triangular or square headsail.

Their interior accommodations are the same as a comparably-sized sloop, though cockpit space is limited due to the presence of a mizzenmast and rigging.

The ketch rig is a popular choice for motorsailers, especially heavy-displacement versions. The ketch is a stable design with quite a bit of power due to its additional mast, which allows the mainsail and boom footprint to be slightly smaller. Golden Age of Piracy

During the Golden Age of Piracy in the 18th century, ketches became popular among pirates due to their versatility and speed. Pirates would use ketches for raiding other ships, as well as transporting stolen goods back to their hideouts.

One notable example is the infamous pirate Blackbeard’s ship, Queen Anne’s Revenge. This ship was originally built as a French slave ship but was later captured by Blackbeard and converted into a powerful ketch with 40 guns.

Decline in Popularity

As steam-powered ships began to rise in popularity in the 19th century, traditional sailing vessels like ketches began to decline in use. However, they continued to be used for coastal trading and fishing due to their ability to navigate shallow waters and small harbors.

Resurgence in Popularity

In the 20th century, there was a resurgence in popularity among recreational sailors due to their ease of handling and versatility. Ketch designs were modified with modern materials such as fiberglass hulls and aluminum masts which made them easier and cheaper to build. Today, a few modern sailboat designs are based on traditional ketch designs.

Benefits of Ketches

The ketch rig offers several advantages over larger sloops .

  • More Balanced Sail Plan One of the main benefits of a ketch is its more balanced sail plan. With two masts, a ketch can distribute its sails more evenly than a sloop, making it easier to handle in rough weather conditions. The smaller mainsail on a ketch also means less heeling (tilting) in strong winds, which can make for a more comfortable ride. The shorter mast height allows ketches to navigate under lower bridges and in shallower waters.costs over time.
  • Versatility Ketches offer greater versatility than sloops due to their ability to carry multiple sails with different configurations. This allows sailors to adjust their sail plan based on wind direction and strength, giving them greater control over their boat’s performance.   • Ease of Handling Ketches have more complex rigging and sail plans than sloops, making them a bit harder to handle. However, despite having an extra mast and rigging, ketches are still pretty easy to manage.
  • Reducing Weather Helm with the Mizzen Sail When sailing upwind, weather helm can be an issue that requires constant attention from the helmsman. Weather helm occurs when there is too much pressure on the sails forward of the mast, causing the boat to turn into the wind. The mizzen sail can be used to balance out this pressure by creating an opposing force aft of the mast. This reduces weather helm and makes it easier for the helmsman to steer with less effort.
  • Aft Cabins For those who enjoy overnight stays on board, ketches offer more privacy and comfort thanks to their aft cabins. Ketch rigs hold a special place in many a cruising sailor’s heart. There’s something dignified and majestic about them. They are two masted rigs with a main mast and a (smaller) mizzenmast – they carry a jib just like a sloop. Generally, ketches will be in the 40-plus foot range. The reasoning for this is that before sailing hardware and gizmotology (yes, we invented a word) was as advanced as it is now, designers were looking for ways to carry a good amount of sail, but make it manageable at the same time. This configuration served that purpose and while doing so also gave sailors quite a few options for various weather conditions and situations.

Ketch rig sailors speak of the balance that can be achieved with adjusting the various sails in a multitude of ways. There’s a more nuanced control that is achievable through the assortment of trimming permutations. Some take pride in the ability to lock the helm and steer the boat using just the relationship of the multiple sails.

Like cutter rigs, ketch advocates also sing praises for its characteristics in heavier winds. Many will break down the mainsail and go with the mizzen and foresail combo, which can make for a balanced and comfortable ride in more blustery conditions. Factor in reefing and there are a lot of options to depower and find the perfect amount of canvas to fly.

Many fans of the ketch will speak of the mizzenmast as a trusty old friend. It can help stabilize the boat under power, even act like a poor man’s bow thruster at times (a very poor man by the way). And for cruisers, it can also be utilized for more industrious purposes like using it as a crane to pick up a dinghy or some other heavy something or other. You’ll also see many wind generators, antennas and other stuff mounted on mizzenmasts because of their natural excellent positioning for such things.

So the ketch is a definitely a great choice for short-handed cruisers. It has many practical benefits and let’s face it – a pretty ketch, fully rigged and sailing peacefully on a beam-reach, heading somewhere better than where it was…that’s a defining image of what sailboat cruising is. Carol and I are both admirers of the ketch rig. Some Yachting Monthly readers may have seen my article on the rig (Six reasons to sail a ketch, May 2014) so I won’t repeat all I wrote then apart from briefly mentioning some of the basic advantages of ketches – their sail plan options, heavy weather versatility, ability to set a riding sail at anchor, use of the mizzen boom as an outboard crane, and the handiness of the mizzen mast as a handhold and mount for kit such as a radar or wind generator.

Much as we enjoy the prettiness and practical aspects of our ketch, the ability to sail ‘jib and jigger’ outweighs all other benefits. For those lazy days when we can’t be bothered with the mainsail or when the wind is higher than for comfort we love to sail with just a foresail and mizzen sail. It does away with the big heavy flappy mainsail attached to a heavy boom crashing from side to side and leaves us with a beautifully balanced sail plan that we can easily control without leaving the cockpit. OK, there is no countering the argument that sailing without a mainsail leaves the boat underpowered in lighter winds, or that the loss of the slot effect between the genoa and the main lessens Aurial’s pointing ability, but for days of high wind or when we just want to drift the absence of the mainsail outweighs the disadvantages.

All too often we have found ourselves on passage when the forecast underestimated the local wind strength, or when we have decided to battle on through adverse conditions with a deadline to meet. When it comes to needing to reef we start by taking in a couple of rolls in the genoa before pulling down the first and then second reef slabs in the main, with progressive reduction of the genoa to match. With further wind increases, we put in the third deep reef in the main or more likely drop it altogether, leaving us sailing jib and jigger under foresail and mizzen alone.

Eventually we might put a reef in the mizzen and change the genoa to a stormsail, but usually the foam luff in our new genoa keeps the reefed sail flat enough to avoid the trip forwards on a bouncing foredeck to rig the inner forestay. Thus dressed and beautifully balanced we can make over 7 knots in a force 6 or 7 with a light helm and little fuss. And because our mainsail reefs at the mast, the accessibility of the mizzen just behind the cockpit means that we never need to go out on deck. Much of the stress of high wind sailing is averted – less heel, no fighting weather helm at the wheel, and making the coffee becomes a pleasure.

On our first sail of the season we were in a relaxed mood and the wind was fitful. I had woken with a bad back, so we ended up drifting up Milford Haven in a variable wind with just the genoa and mizzen. The sun shone, Carol helmed, and I sat back against the cushions while we coasted along. In such lazy moods without the option of the mizzen we would probably have ended up motoring – instead we were free to listen to the wildlife along the shore and had time to sink into the peace of the lovely countryside. Yes, we do relish the joys of ketch sailing!

This week I had the opportunity to poke around a ketch-rigged Pearson 424 that was for sale in the neighborhood, and although they’ve generally fallen out of favor today, I was reminded of the many advantages of the ketch design. The Pearson 424 is an example of several decades-old production boats that were offered in a variety of rigs (sloop, cutter, or ketch), which has given longtime owners an opportunity to compare sail plans.

Judging from Pearson 424 list prices and bulletin board discussions about the Pearson 424, it appears that the scales are slightly tilted in favor of the sloop and cutter versions. However, the ketch owners are equally emphatic regarding their boats’ positive attributes. Having covered most of my cruising miles aboard a ketch, I’m an impartial party in this debate. So keep in mind, that much of what you read below (redacted from an earlier post of mine) is colored by personal experience.

My affinity for cruising ketches like the Allied Seawind II we feature in the January 2016 issue of Practical Sailor runs contrary to the view of their many detractors. Their criticism goes something like this: Ketches were popular in early days of cruising when undersized winches and friction-bound hardware conspired to make handling large sails a chore. With efficient winches and modern hardware, split rigs are obsolete on boats under 50 feet, they say.

Having wrestled down the main on more than a few 40-footers with state of-the-art everything, I don’t buy this argument, but I’ll let it stand. Nor will I quibble over complaints about a ketchs handicap to windward-which in my view is overstated, at least with regards to the better designs. Being the first boat to reach a windward watering hole is nice, but it’s hardly the first feature you look for in a good cruising boat.

You can explore the cruising blogosphere and find plenty of resident ketch-haters, and indeed, some of the complaints have merit; the added weight and expense of the ketchs extra rigging are irrefutable knocks. But having lived aboard and sailed a much-beloved, 32-foot William Atkin ketch for 10 years, I’m not interested in joining the chorus. Instead, I celebrate the rigs attractions, especially to the short-handed cruiser.

  • Smaller sails are easier to handle. In squally weather, start with a reef tucked in the main, then just furl the mizzen or jib as needed without leaving the cockpit, upsetting helm, or wrestling more reefs into the main.
  • Ride the invisible rail. The fore-and-aft distribution of sails simplifies the task of achieving a rock-steady helm.
  • Impress your sloop-sailing friends with fancy ketch tricks. Sail backward through the mooring field (spin circles if you have a sharpie), nose casually up to anchor, hove-to with jig and jigger.
  • Barrel westward on a reach. Turbo-charge off-wind sailing by setting a mizzen staysail.
  • Don’t fear a dismasting. Having two independently stayed masts increases your odds of having at least one spar to use for jury rigging. (This advantage does not apply to ketches with triatic stays like the lovely Sea Witch.)
  • Sail in good company. Some famous ketches to consider: Steinlager 2 (1990 Whitbread winner), Suhaili (Robin Knox Johnstons Golden Globe race winner), Joshua (Bernard Moitessiers beloved, steel globe-trotter), Wanderer IV (Eric and Susan Hiscocks storied cruiser), Colin Archers heroic little rescue boats . . . the list goes on.
  • Draw longing sighs from those ashore. There is something about having a main and mizzen working together that kindles romantic visions of South Sea islands.

Another nice thing about ketches is that many have reached an age when they are true bargains. Here are just a few familiar ketches worth considering: L. Francis Herreshoffs classic H-28, Gary Hoyts unstayed Freedom 40, Charlie Morgans family-friendly Bahama-mama Out Island 41, Ted Brewers Whitby 42 (aka Brewer 12.8), the Cheoy Lee Offshore 41, any of William Gardens iconic ketches, the Swedish-built Hallberg-Rassy 42, Atkins Ingrid 38 (and her related offspring), John Hannas iconic Tahiti ketch, Holman & Pyes Bowman 57, and two S&S designs, the Swan 57 and Tartan TOCK.

These are just a few that come to mind. I’m sure PS readers have many other boats to add to the list as evidence that reports on the death of the cruising ketch have been greatly exaggerated.

Buying a Sailboat: Sloop vs. Ketch

Consider many different questions when deciding what kind of sailboat is best for you. If you are looking for a cruising sailboat, depending on your preferred size range, you may be choosing between a sloop and a ketch. These are the two most common  types of cruising sailboats . Each offers certain advantages.

A sloop is generally the most common type of sailboat rig. A sloop has a single mast and usually only two sails: the mainsail and a headsail, such as a jib or a genoa. A sloop may also use a racing or cruising spinnaker.

Sloops come in all sizes, from 8-foot dinghies to maxi boats over a hundred feet long. A sloop uses what is called a Bermuda or Marconi rig. This is the tall, thin, triangular mainsail that's commonly seen on the waters of popular boating areas.

The sloop rig generally is simpler to use and cheaper to build than a ketch rig. Because of the wind and sail dynamics involved, a sloop is almost always faster than other rigs in boats of comparable size, especially when sailing windward.

A ketch is a common rig for cruising sailboats. It has two masts: a traditional mainmast as on a sloop, plus a smaller mast in the rear of the boat. This is called the mizzenmast. Technically, the mizzenmast must be mounted forward of the boat’s rudderpost to be a ketch. If the mizzen is mounted further aft, behind the rudder post, it is considered a yawl. The mizzenmast is typically smaller on a yawl than on a ketch, but otherwise, these rigs are similar.

A ketch, therefore, uses three primary sails: the mainsail and headsail, as on a sloop, plus the mizzen sail aft. A ketch may also use a spinnaker.

The three sails do not necessarily mean that the sail area on a ketch is larger than on a sloop of the same size, however. Sail area is usually planned by boat designers based on the boat's size, displacement (weight), hull shape and configuration, not on the number of masts or sails. This means that the mainsail and headsail of a ketch are generally smaller than on a sloop, but the mizzen sail roughly makes up the difference.

Benefits and Disadvantages of Sloops vs. Ketches

Sloops and ketches each have their own benefits, but also disadvantages. When deciding what type of boat to buy, consider these differences.

Advantages of a Sloop

  • A sloop is generally faster and sails closer to the wind.
  • Sloops have fewer sails than ketches to buy and maintain.
  • With a sloop, there is less standing and running rigging with one mast, which means there is less to manage and maintain overall.
  • As the most popular contemporary boat, sloops are available in a wide variety.

Disadvantages of a Sloop

  • Sloop sails are generally larger and heavier, requiring more strength for handling, hoisting, and trimming, particularly on a larger boat.
  • Sloops have fewer options to reduce sail area in stronger winds. Sloops offer only reefing or furling of the sails.

Advantages of a Ketch

  • Ketches have smaller sails. These sails are more easily managed and hoisted on a larger boat, which is why ketches are preferred by many older sailors.
  • Using only two sails at a time provides multiple options for managing different sailing conditions, such as strong winds.

Disadvantages of a Ketch

  • Ketch rigs generally do not sail as fast or as close to the wind as a sloop sailboat.
  • Ketches have more standing rigging (shrouds and stays) and running rigging (halyards and sheets) to manage and maintain.
  • The mizzenmast in ketches takes up space in the stern.
  • There are fewer ketches available on the market. Ketches are more popular as an older boat.

Most ketches are intended as cruising boats that are easy to handle and comfortable for cruising. Many sloops, even sketch sloops, are designed for greater speed and racing. Many ketches, therefore, are different from sloops in ways other than just the masts and sails. Designed as cruisers, many ketches are heavier, more stable in sea conditions, and more commodious down below. On the other hand, contemporary builders produce few ketches, so there are a greater variety of sloops available as new boats.

As in other decisions when shopping for a sailboat, the preferable rig depends mostly on your preferred uses of the boat. The same is true when comparing fixed keel and centerboard sailboats.

Aquijo is the largest ketch in the world with excellent accommodations and a spacious interior.

The 282-foot Aquijo might be the largest high-performance sailing ketch in the world, but that wasn’t the primary goal of its design. The owner’s intention was to build a fast world cruiser that could sail to the ends of the earth, but just as importantly, have huge amounts of interior space that would make the sailing superyacht feel like home anywhere.

Aquijo is a boat built for escapism. “The owner wanted to go and see the world on his yacht,” Gerhard Veldsman, her captain, told Robb Report.   “We’ve been around the world once already, and returned to Holland in early 2020 to complete the boat’s five-year survey. After Covid hit, everything changed.”

The plan had been to make a refit pit stop in the Netherlands before heading through the Northwest Passage to the Pacific, and then embarking on a second world circumnavigation. That voyage has been postponed until travel restrictions ease, or at least until a time when fragile countries are less vulnerable to the pandemic. “I doubt the vaccine will be available in the small island nations as quickly as everywhere else” says Veldsman. “So we’re just sitting tight.”

Built in 2016, Aquijo was an unusually complex sailing yacht, a collaboration between Oceanco and Vitters. Her owner is a seasoned sailor who first chartered every large, iconic sailing vessel out there, from the 289-foot Maltese Falcon and Enigma (when named Phocea ) to Mirabella V, before embarking on a design and build of his own yacht.

“His aim was to take the best design pieces out of each of those yachts to construct Aquijo ,” says Veldsman. “That included matching Maltese Falcon in size, but adopting a large bar on the aft deck with a beer tap.”

There’s no denying that Aquijo is a beast. She has 64,500-square-feet of sails. At full pelt, she reaches speeds in excess of 20 knots which, for a 1,600 gross-ton yacht, is an impressive sight to behold. “When you have a boat of Aquijo ’s size and weight traveling fast through water, you need a team of people who understand not only the principles of sailing but also what happens below deck in terms of the hydraulics.”

Features like the indoor spa pool beneath the opening skylight are one of many features that make Aquijo a liveaboard yacht.

Aquijo has a significant amount of complex hydraulic power. Vitters’s knowledge in building large custom sailing boats was a primary reason for the owner selecting that shipyard in Zwartsluis, Holland. But at 282-feet, the boat was too big for Vitters to construct at its facilities. So, Vitters built the sailing systems, and Oceanco was chosen to build the hull and superstructure.

Exterior design was by Bill Tripp, with the contemporary interior by Dölker+Voges Design. Together with the owner, the designers conceived a sailing vessel matching a comparable-sized motoryacht for interior space. “Balancing the abilities of a lightweight, high-performance sailing yacht with all the space and luxury of a motoryacht is why Aquijo is the size that she is,” says Veldsman. “We had to go big to accomplish that.”

Aquijo pairs an efficient cruising hull with lots of weight in her lifting keel, the largest of its kind ever designed. With the keel down, the draft is an impressive 38 feet. “We once cruised up the Sicilian coast in 40 knots of wind, and all the motoryachts were turning around but we were able to sail through it,” says Veldsman.

Notable design features include neon headboards, extensive deck space and a private owner’s terrace that takes you from bed to balcony in two steps. The 197-foot-high crow’s nest offers the best views on board. The beach club, with Jacuzzi below a main deck skylight, is one of the owner’s favorite spaces on board, particularly in colder climates. The boat’s 300-foot masts are too tall to travel through any canals, which means navigating the Polar regions to get to different continents. Vast, remote waters like those off the coast of Patagonia, where wind speeds can reach 70-plus knots, is where Aquijo comes into her own.

This summer, Aquijo is cruising around the Mediterranean, with charters in Turkey already confirmed through Edmiston, before heading to the Caribbean for winter.

Aquijo: On board the largest ketch in the world

Two Dutch powerhouses teamed up to create a world-girdling, record-breaking sailing yacht. Step on board the 86 metre super sailer Aquijo...

World cruising, in comfort, was a key part of the brief when it was handed to Tripp Design in 2010. As was speed. Sailing around the Greek Islands during her maiden season, Aquijo was out in 35 to 40 knots of breeze and hit 20.4 knots, cruising at an average of 19. Even at 1,538 gross tonnes, the largest volume modern sailing yacht in the world can fly.

To produce such a luxurious thoroughbred required a unique collaboration between two Dutch shipyards and Tripp. They first called upon Vitters , well-known for its experience in high-performance sailing yachts. But the yard had never built anything on this scale before. Its previous largest yacht measured 60 metres and had a much smaller displacement. So Vitters joined forces with Oceanco , relying on the latter’s experience in the engineering and construction of 80 metre-plus motor yachts. It was a collaboration in the truest sense of the word.

Aquijo was built at Oceanco’s much larger facility at Alblasserdam, which enjoys direct access to the sea, but the teams worked closely together. At times it was a precarious balance to keep the demands of a sailing yacht in check: the loads are immense.

“The hull is high-tensile steel,” says Tripp. “The loading of the boat is as much about bending stiffness as it is about the strength.” Aquijo ’s fully optimised, lightweight hull construction is capable of withstanding forces from the mast and rig loads as well as the 11.6 metre keel in the worst-case scenario, a knockdown.

Weight was critical for optimised sailing performance and righting moment, requiring tight weight management and control throughout the whole design, engineering and build process. “ Aquijo ’s such a powerful boat,” says Vitters’ founder Jan Vitters. “The tremendous sheet loads, the enormous loads on everything — that was a big learning curve.” The main mast rig loads weigh in at 180 tonnes on the V1 cap shroud, 90 tonnes on the staysail stay and 73 tonnes on the runners.

Aquijo is crammed with innovations to enhance sailing performance based on her massive size: custom 40 tonne winches with adjustable line speed allow sail handling in varying wind conditions; a unique submarine anchor system, with two anchor weights set in optimised locations to improve seakeeping; and Vitters’ in-house-developed steering system, which translates the hydrodynamic force on the carbon-fibre rudder blades — for the largest-ever carbon rudders — directly to the flybridge steering wheels, providing the helmsman with immediate feedback.

The acutely sensitive steering allows Aquijo to perform like a much smaller sailing yacht. “She handles like a boat one quarter of her size,” the owner reports. “I think we have given the yacht a lot of attributes akin to smaller performance sailing vessels,” says Tripp, “appropriately adapted for the reality of the forces on a boat of this size. The boat is easily driven, the sails can be put up and taken down quickly, and the loads are evenly divided over three sails, giving lots of options.”

Tripp acknowledges that this isn’t exactly new — he’s used a similar configuration for a client seeking a 23 metre. But achieving this on the scale of Aquijo is impressive.

Flying 3Di North Sails, the yacht has a total sail area of 3,821 square metres and 5,051 square metres with the Code 1 up. “It is easy to sail the boat in 30-plus knots of wind, and it’s not intimidating,” says Tripp. “ Aquijo sails very well reefed and still exceeds wind speed in light air. She is excellent under power but better at sailing.”

The exterior design and layout were influenced by a need to reduce windage and keep the centre of gravity low. Aquijo started out at 85 metres but was extended at the start of construction to improve the proportions of the beach club area, says Tripp, and make sure a better boarding platform could be installed.

Despite her size, the goal wasn’t to wow. “If you think we built the boat to impress, you are wrong,” the owner says. “When you approach Aquijo from a distance, you do not get the impression that she is such a big boat, because her design is so clear and balanced. Only if you compare her to other things can you see her dimensions.”

That unique profile was dictated by the owner’s desire for an extensive personal enclave above the main deck, “which required adding one deck more than was our norm for a sailing boat”, according to Tripp.

This has resulted in a superb owner’s deck with a rear-facing bedroom offering 270 degree views. It’s an amazing place to wake up, says the Aquijo ’s owner. “Sailboats and a view from the inside don’t normally go together, but when you — electrically — open the big curtains and blinds and find yourself surrounded by that glistening and gleaming sea, that is when you absorb the feeling of the freedom of the sea. And from the guest cabins, you also have a stunning view overlooking the sea,” he says.

To avoid Aquijo looking too tall, Tripp placed the bridge a half-deck down from the upper owner’s deck, with the flybridge flush on top and forward of the owner’s area. The sheer was kept low aft for clear sightlines from the saloon and dining room and raised forward.

“This gave us space to store Aquijo ’s tenders below deck and still have a full-height bulwark to keep the foredeck clean, accessible and safe. We proposed a centred engine room, a lifting keel, even-height ketch rig and an aft inside-outside beach club,” says Tripp.

That is no cramped, cluttered sailing yacht engine room, either. The technical spaces are masterful, expanding from the centre and running the full length of Aquijo under the accommodation, allowing for machinery, tenders and stowage to be evenly spaced and weighted.

The superyacht sundeck is the prime day-time destination on board Aquijo. “When the winds are prevailing you can even use the Jacuzzi during sailing,” the owner says. “At twilight there are three bars where I like to have a drink: one on the owner’s deck, one on the flybridge wrapping halfway round the Jacuzzi and one on the big main deck aft.”

Aquijo ’s interior design is by Dölker + Voges , who worked closely with the owner’s wife. “It really was her baby. She knows every corner, even into the crew quarters,” says Jan Vitters. The goal was to balance the essence of a small sailing yacht with motor yacht luxuries.

“The interior design is contemporary and elegant, yet fresh and natural,” says Robert Voges. “Clear and logical lines, pure materials, simplicity and remarkable attention to the details.” Wood and stainless steel are used liberally inside Aquijo , playing an important role in reflecting the sailing character of the yacht, a specific request of the owner.

“[Stainless steel] is one of the noblest materials,” says Voges. “Using it in the right way allows an exciting interaction between light, reflections and interior design, creating a sophisticated and modern atmosphere.”

Stainless steel is employed both practically and artfully on board Aquijo . Take the handrails, discreet but easily grasped in a sea state, and the mizzen mast cladding in the middle of the lower deck guest corridor, which adds interest and reflects light.

This is replicated in Aquijo ’s central stairway, where a polished stainless steel artwork is shaped to mimic the look of a mast — a wow-worthy custom piece commissioned from a German stainless steel manufacturer. “You wouldn’t believe the time it took to get that level of shine on the stainless,” says Patrick Moussa, of Master Yachts, the owner’s project manager. It gleams mirror-like and is a striking feature upon entering the main deck foyer, adjacent to the wheelchair-accessible superyacht elevator .

This gleaming motif carries forward in the high-gloss Japanese lacquer headboards — each of Aquijo ’s guest cabins sporting its own pop of colour — glass mosaic shower walls and palladium-leaf ceiling domes. Reflective surfaces are offset by natural woods, from the mutenye floors to light brushed ash walls and teak planking.

Dölker + Voges also helped shape a layout that connects private and public areas efficiently and creates multipurpose spaces. This can be seen on Aquijo ’s main deck, where the saloon and aft deck living areas merge seamlessly, a central bar straddling the two spaces. The saloon seating area is smaller than might be expected, but that is the point.

The owners wanted cosy spaces as well as larger venues for socialising. “We preferred to have numerous different and intimate spaces over palatial ones as we emphasise conversation and sharing experiences on board,” the owner says. “ Aquijo is about intimacy among family and friends — and being able to go anywhere with them.”

The aft deck is generous and there are dining areas inside and out — complete with gimballing tables. “These provide fantastic alfresco dining, even when Aquijo is heeling 20 degrees,” the owner says. The guest cabin configurations can be changed, transforming from suites to multiple cabins, and from the lower deck guests have direct access to the superyacht beach club , which Voges says is his favourite area.

Aquijo ’s beach club and spa coexist in perfect harmony, with a central spa pool — naturally illuminated by a skylight created by the glass floor in the main deck above — and flanked by a lounge area to starboard and a sauna to port with views out to sea. “The sauna and steam bath are particularly useful after a sail in cold, wintry conditions,” the owner says.

The entire area is teak-clad, with the interior theme carried through in the white U-shaped sofa and turquoise lacquered table to starboard. The original brief called for an aft engine room and a superyacht spa amidships, but moving the wellness area aft made Aquijo ’s beach club a far more cohesive space.

The engine room moving forwards, meanwhile, had the added benefit of negating the need for keel ballast and placing it much closer to Aquijo ’s crew quarters. Tripp is happy with the swap. “The combination of the vertical windows and the aft glass doors makes the inside-outside beach club a vibrant and compelling space — one can come out of the water or beach into this space and Zen [out],” he says. The beach club can also be used at sea when the aft watertight door is closed.

It’s a space sure to be enjoyed as the owners journey around the globe — plans that heavily influenced the yacht’s overall design. Aquijo ’s rig height precludes traversing the Panama Canal, so she will have to be ready to take the long way round.

“The yacht must be capable of rounding the capes in a storm while under sail and in safety,” says Tripp. “Having this capability requires a lot of attention to balance the hull form, sail area, stability and robust, powered control systems.”

Tripp admits no project has ever stretched him quite like Aquijo . “The creative challenge was intense,” he says. But if the measure of success is a happy owner, then Tripp can count this epic production among his many successes. “The mission of this boat is to explore the world in safety, comfort and speed,” the owner says. “We will be setting course for some faraway places.”

Yes, as it happens, she’s mine … and that’s me in the photo, just stumbled on it now. Her name is “Gwylan” and she was built in 1977 by McKie (“Nick”) Roth in Westport, Maine. I’m the second owner. She’s built almost entirely as designed, except for the bowsprit, no spreaders on the mizzen, and no cedar bucket. I highly recommend the bowsprit. With the forestay on a removable turnbuckle, I can set and easily handle a good sized genoa on the headstay, which is a blessing in light air as this is quite a heavy boat. The sprit also makes a wonderful place to hang the anchor – safe, out of the way, and easy to single-hand, which I do much of the time. I sail her on the Delaware River around Philadelphia (location of the photo) and do a cruise on the Chesapeake in the Spring and Fall. I’ll be glad to talk about these sweet boats at great length!
