Newport 28/28 II

While initially there were questions about quality, the 28 is a good entry-level cruiser-racer for those on a budget..

The Newport 28 was one of the longer-lived small production cruising boats, having been in production from 1974 through 1987. Almost 1,000 of the C&C-designed boats were built by Capital Yachts of Harbor City, California.

Newport 28/28 II

There is a strong family resemblance between the Newport 28 and other C&C designs of the same period. In addition to the Newport 28, Capital built the Newport 41, another mid-1970s C&C design. The styling of both boats is characterized by the sweeping attractive sheerlines for which C&C is justifiably known.

As with any boat whose production run spanned more than a decade, many changes were made in the Newport 28, both outside and inside, over the years. The original scimitar-shaped keel and rudder gave way to more modern high aspect ratio appendages with 1983 models, increasing draft from 4′ 6″ to 5′ 2″. A shoal draft version drawing 4′ was optional, but

less popular than the deep-keel boat. Versions with the modern keel are designated Newport 28-II.

Sailing Performance

The Newport 28 has a tall, high aspect ratio masthead rig. The newer deep keel models are about six seconds per mile faster than the original version of the boat, which typically sails with a PHRF rating of 192. This is comparable to other cruiser-racers of the same size.

Despite a fairly high ballast/displacement ratio, owners report that the boat is tender. This is due in part to the fairly round midship section, and in part to the fact that few 28′ boats are really very stiff.

Racing in Newport 28s is quite keen in some areas, particularly on the West Coast, where there are large fleets that race both as one-designs and under PHRF. The boat is a competitive PHRF racer, and enough boats have been rated so that its handicap appears fair. This means you are likely to get a rating based on the boat’s performance, not on your own sailing ability.

Most owners report that the boat is very well balanced. This is typical of C&C designs, which usually have fairly small mainsails. With a large foretriangle and a small mainsail, it may be necessary to rake the mast aft slightly to give the boat a little weather helm. It’s far easier to add weather helm than to reduce it.

Construction

Make no mistake about it, the Newport 28 is a boat built to a price. A common complaint by owners is mediocre fitting of woodwork, leaking hull-to-deck joint, cockpit drains that are too small, plastic valves on through hull fittings, inadequate backing plates for hardware—in short, the entire litany of problems associated with boats built to be low in price.

One owner who races his boat hard noticed a large crack in the hull molding aft of the primary sheet winches, and discovered that he could see daylight through it. Apparently, the hull had been cracked in removing it from the mold, and the cracked patched over with auto body filler. This was on a new boat. The factory made good on that one.

Why would so many people buy a boat that apparently has a history of minor construction flaws and mediocre quality control?

The answer, according to owners, is that the basic styling, accommodations, and performance are better than other boats of the same size and type, making up for other shortcomings. When you buy a Chevrolet you know in advance that it isn’t going to be built like a Mercedes.

The interior is one factor that many owners report is a major influence in their decision to buy a Newport 28. With a waterline length of 23′ 6″, there’s a lot of interior for a 28′ boat.

Despite the fairly low freeboard and pronounced concave sheer, there is just over 6′ of headroom on centerline over the main cabin. The pronounced camber of the main cabintop keeps the deckhouse profile low, but at the expense of headroom, which diminishes very quickly away from the centerline. Fortunately, on a boat this small you’re almost always walking near the centerline.

There have been three basic interior arrangements over the years: galley along the starboard side of the main cabin, galley aft on the port side, and galley aft on the starboard side. On later models, only the two aft galley configurations were available. The galley aft on starboard side is the only layout that offers a stove with oven, due to the setup of the main cabin settees.

Unfortunately, this galley arangement required cutting away the starboard main bulkhead beneath the chainplates to make the starboard settee long enough for sleeping, which in our opinion is a structural compromise.

Newport 28/28 II

Since there are four other berths in the boat—two forward, the port settee, and a quarterberth—using the starboard settee as a berth isn’t necessary with anything less than a full crew. For family cruising, it is likely that at least one member of the crew would be short enough to use the starboard settee even without the foot extension.

Originally, the boat was equipped with the Atomic Four gasoline inboard, a standard engine in most auxiliaries until the proliferation of diesel power in the early 1980s. Diesel power was optional until the introduction of the 28-II model.

Some boats have Yanmar diesels, others Universal. It took the builder a while to decide which diesel engine to use, as owners report engines ranging in horsepower from 11 to 18. To most owners, there appears to be little difference in performance between diesel engines of various sizes. All of the Universal diesels should be adequate for the boat, and the Atomic Four is far more power than she needs.

Obviously, the diesel engine is a big plus when shopping for a used boat. Retrofitting a diesel on a gas-powered boat of this size is usually more expense than can be justified unless you’re planning to keep the boat for a long time.

Access to the engine for service varies from awful to good, depending on the model year. Fortunately, newer models have better access from the interior as well as a flush hatch in the cockpit sole directly over the engine.

Buying A Used Boat

Because so many owner complaints center on fairly mediocre construction detailing, a used boat should be carefully surveyed before purchase. Particular attention should be paid to structural details of the hull-to-deck joint, attachment of bulkheads, and mounting of deck hardware.

Obviously, a later model boat with a diesel engine is more desirable than an older boat with a gas engine. We would also consider the 28-II version with updated keel and rudder to be more desirable than the earlier design.

Because of the large number of Newport 28s built, at any given time there are a number of boats on the market. This means you should be able to find the combination of ingredients you’re looking for for in age, power plant, keel, and interior layouts—especially if you’re shopping on the West Coast.

It would be a good idea to look at all three interior arrangements before making a decision, although if you opt for a newer boat your choice will be between the two aft galley interiors.

Some of the boats have been seriously upgraded by owners, including such things as larger cockpit drains and higher quality hull hardware.

We would be wary about any boat that showed a lot of inexpert do-it-yourself characterisitics, such as caulking along the hull-to-deck joint, around the ports, or around the chainplates.

Although a tiller is standard, a fair number of boats have been equipped with wheel steering, either as an original option or as a retrofit.

The steering pedestal takes up far less room than the tiller, but it does require that the helmsman sit all the way in the back of the boat. While this arrangement keeps the cockpit less crowded for racing, it also puts all the helmsman’s weight at the aft end of the boat—not a good place for it.

In addition, the helmsman on a wheel-steered boat cannot reach either the mainsheet or the jib sheets, a serious shortcoming. He furthermore has trouble hiding from rain and spray under a companionway dodger.

Life for the helmsman on a wheel-steered Newport 28 will be a lonely one. Wheel steering, being hardly necessary on a boat this size, is hardly desirable on the Newport 28.

The Newport 28 is a good entry-level cruiser-racer for someone wanting a reasonable combination of accommodations and performance, as long as you’re not too persnickety about details. It would be a reasonable compromise for someone who likes more traditional appearance in a modern boat, but doesn’t have the money to spend for a higher-quality boat of the same size and type, such as a Sabre 28.

1986 Newport 28 Newport 28By Capital YachtsWhether your new to sailing or an old salt, you won't have to look hard to know that Capital Yachts built a sweet pocket cruiser in the 28. Modest in SA/D and weight, but tough in the overall construction process, these fine little yachts have stood the test of time far better than most. The 28 has a solid glass hull and a well built cored deck, so serious issues are rare. Sailing favorably against Sabre 28 or a Catalina 27, the Newport is stiff after a bit of initial tenderness in a breeze, yet lively. These boats sail well and Sailing Magazine was right to note them as a strong value for those seeking an entry level boat with good manners and roomThis example has good sails, wheel steering, diesel engine and much more. Here is a Review from "Practical Sailor" S2 8.5 MeterThe 8.5 is good for cruising the coasts in comfort and style--as long as you like the modern look. When Leon Slikkers founded S2 Yachts in 1973, much of the attention to detail that had previously characterized Slickcraft powerboats—Slikkers’ earlier boatbuilding venture— traveled with him to the new boatbuilding company. In the 13 years S2 sailboats were in production (S2 still makes powerboats), the company produced a variety of modern cruising designs from the board of Arthur Edmunds, all characterized by longish fin keels, freestanding spade rudders, straight sheerlines, and a staggering variety of draft options and cockpit locations. In the early ’80s, S2 reached more for the performance market with the Grand Slam series of small boats, and the 10.3 “offshore racer-cruiser.” These higher performance boats were designed by Scott Graham and Eric Schlageter, well known for their MORC and smaller IOR designs. The S2 8.5 is a 28-footer cast in the company’s traditional mold. Her hull dimensions, sail area, displacement, and general design characteristics put her square in the middle of the modern 28-footers such as the Tanzer 8.5, Newport 28, O’Day 28, and the Pearson 28.The boat’s styling is conventionally modern. She has a fairly straight sheer, fairly high freeboard, and low, raked cabin trunk with dark tinted flush ports. Production of the 8.5 ran from 1981 to 1983. The boat was replaced by the similar S2 8.6, which continued until S2 stopped making sailboats in 1986.ConstructionThe hull of the S2 8.5 is a solid hand layup. Glasswork is excellent, and is noted by owners as one of the main considerations in buying the boat. Gelcoat quality is excellent.Slight roving printthrough is evident, but it is not objectionable. Minor hard spots are visible in the topsides, probably caused by the attachment of interior furniture and bulkheads. The deck molding is cored with end grain balsa, giving a solid feel underfoot as well as providing reasonable insulating properties.S2’s hull-to-deck joint is the basic type that we would like to see adopted throughout the industry. The hull molding has an inward-turning flange, onto which the deck molding is dropped. The joint is bedded in flexible sealant, and through bolted on six inch intervals by bolts passing through the full length slotted aluminum toerail. The joint is also through bolted across the stem. All deck hardware is properly through bolted, although pulpits, cleats, and winches merely use nuts and washers on the underside of the deck, rather than the aluminum or stainless steel backing plates we prefer.Another feature of the hull-to-deck joint is a heavy, semi-rigid vinyl rubrail at the sheerline, quite aptly termed a “crash rubrail” by S2. This will go a long way toward absorbing the shock of the inevitable encounters with docks and the other hard objects that seem to be attracted to the topsides of the typical sailboat. Although this rail is black when the boat is new, it had dulled to a chalky gray on older S2’s we examined. The builder advertises “bronze seacocks on all through hull fittings.” These are not traditional tapered plug seacocks, but are ball valves mounted directly to through hull fittings. A proper seacock—whether it uses a ball valve or a tapered plug—has a heavy flange to allow through bolting to the hull. This is an important safety feature. Should a valve seize, it may become necessary to apply a great deal of leverage to the handle in order to open or close the valve. The deeply threaded through hull stem can easily break under these conditions, and more than one boat has been lost in this manner. We also suggest that seacocks be installed on the cockpit drain scuppers and the bilge pump outlet, both of which may be under water while the boat is sailing. Light air performance would benefit by the fairing in of the through hull fittings, particularly the head intake and discharge, both of which are far enough forward to have a significant effect on water flow past the hull.Ballast is a 3,000 pound lead casting, epoxied inside a hollow keel shell. We prefer an external lead casting bolted to the hull for its shock-absorbing qualities and ease of repair. This preference was reinforced recently when we examined an old Bristol 27 just sold by a friend. The surveyor noticed dampness near the bottom of the leading edge of the keel, which showed slight external damage. Probing the loose putty revealed some abrasion of the glass keel molding. In order to sell the boat, it was necessary to grind away a large portion of the glass at the front of the keel, dry out the ballast, and reglass the lead—a job that took several days of work and cost our friend a fair chunk of money.Much of the boat’s interior structure is plywood, glassed to the hull. Fillet bonding is neat and workmanlike with no rough edges to be found.Chainplates are conventional stainless steel flat bar, bolted to bulkheads and plywood gussets in the main cabin. These are properly backed with stainless steel pads. Due to the fact that the hull is lined throughout with a carpet-like synthetic material, it is not possible to examine the bonding of the chainplate knees to the hull. The stemhead fitting is a stainless steel weldment, through bolted to the deck and hull and reinforced inside the hull with a stainless steel gusset to prevent deflection of the deck from the pull aft of the headstay. We’d like to see a metal backup pad behind this fitting rather than the washers which are used.General construction is thoughtful and well executed, with excellent glasswork, a strong and simple hull-to-deck joint, and reasonably installed hardware and fittings.Handling Under PowerAlthough some early models of the 8.5 used a seven horsepower BMW diesel, the 1982 version employs an eight horsepower Yanmar. These small Yanmars are quite impressive, light in weight and far smoother than the company’s older rockcrushers.Because of the high freeboard and considerable windage of the 8.5, the standard engine is the absolute minimum power plant for the boat. Recognizing this fact, the company offered a 15 horsepower, two-cylinder Yanmar as an option. For another 75 pounds and $1,150, we would want this option on the boat if the ability to get places under power is a real consideration. The extra fuel consumption of the larger engine will scarcely be noticed. The 18 gallon aluminum fuel tank will probably give a range under power of over 250 miles—more than adequate for a 28 foot cruising boat. The fuel tank is located under the cockpit and is securely mounted and properly grounded. There is an easily reached fuel shut off between the engine and tank. Unfortunately, the fuel fill is located in the cockpit sole. Spilled diesel oil turns even the best fiberglass nonskid into an ice skating rink. Fuel fills should be located on deck, where spills can be efficiently washed away.Engine access is via a large removable panel on the inboard face of the quarterberth. This panel lacks any kind of handhold to make it easily removable, which will discourage regular checking of the engine oil. The top companionway step also removes for access, but it’s a long reach to the dipstick. There is no oil pan under the engine. It will be necessary to be very careful when changing oil to keep the bilge clean. We have yet to see anyone change oil and filters on a boat engine without spilling something. With the quarterberth panel removed, access for routine service is excellent. The quarterberth has remarkable headroom over, so that the mechanic will not feel like a trapped spelunker after a half hour of work. Engine removal will require some joinerwork disassembly.Handling Under SailThe S2 8.5 is no slug under sail. Her PHRF rating of 174 to 180 compares very favorably to other boats of her size and type. The Sabre 28, for example, has a rating of 198. The Pearson 28 about 195, and the O’Day 28 about 198.Part of this is no doubt due to the fact that the standard sails on the boat come from the North loft. While North’s OEM sails may not be the vertical cut Mylar-Kevlar wonders that adorn custom boats, they’re a lot better than most.S2 now uses Hall spars. The simple masthead rig is extremely clean, with airfoil spreaders and internal tangs. The boom features an internal outhaul and provision for two internally-led reefing lines, with cam cleats at the forward end of the boom. The deck-stepped mast is mounted in a stainless steel deck plate incorporating plenty of holes for the attachment of blocks. Halyards and Cunningham lead aft along the cabin house top to a pair of Lewmar #8 winches. Lewmar #16s are optional, but hardly necessary. The main is controlled by a six-part Harken rig mounted on the end of the boom, and a Kenyon traveler mounted on the aft cockpit coaming. This will work fine with the tiller-steered version of the boat. With wheel steering, the mainsheet is likely to be a nuisance to the helmsman.Because of the end-of-boom sheeting, a boom vang will be essential for full mainsail control. Ironically, the boat’s drawings show almost mid-boom sheeting, with the traveler mounted on the bridgedeck at the forward end of the cockpit. This is probably a better arrangement, although it heavily loads the center of the boom and requires more sheeting force.Owners of 8.5s have little but praise for the interior of the boat. The cabin has a wide feeling, created by pushing everything outboard. The “chart area” on the plan is a myth, as far as we can tell.Despite the fact that the shrouds are set well in from the rail, the boat lacks inboard headsail tracks. Rather, you are limited to snatch blocks shackled to the toerail track. A six-foot piece of track set inboard of the rail would be a useful addition.Standard headsail sheet winches are two-speed Lewmar #30s. Options include both larger winches and self-tailers, both of which are worth considering for either racing or cruising. The cockpit coamings are wide enough for mounting larger primaries and secondaries. The high-quality rig and sails add to the price of the S2, but they are additions well worth the cost.Deck LayoutThe deck layout of the 8.5 is clean and functional, with no toe stubbers to catch you unawares. There are two foredeck mooring cleats, but no bow chocks. The necessity to lead an anchor line well off the boat’s centerline, coupled with high freeboard forward, is likely to result in a boat which sails around on her anchor or mooring. The 8.5 has a pair of wide stainless steel chafing strips at the bow which will greatly protect the deck from the chafe of the anchor line. The 8.5’s foredeck anchor well is one of the best we’ve seen. It is shallow—just deep enough to hold an anchor and adequate rode. There are double scuppers, which offer less likelihood of clogging. The lid is held on by a full-length piano hinge, and there is a positive latch. The shallow locker well above the waterline means that water is less likely to enter through the scuppers, which can be a real problem with a deep anchor well. When the bow pitches into waves, a deep anchor well can fill with water, and if the scuppers clog with debris, you can find yourself sailing around with several hundred pounds of extra weight in the worst possible position. There is no provision for securing the bitter end of the anchor rode, but a big galvanized eyebolt installed in the well by the owner will solve that one.The running lights leave something to be desired. Their location at deck level just aft of the stem makes them vulnerable to damage when handling ground tackle. We much prefer an international style bicolor mounted on the pulpit, another two feet off the water: easier to see, and out of the way. Wiring for the running lights is exposed in the anchor well, and should be secured out of the way.A recessed teak handrail runs the full length of the cabin trunk, serving the dual function of heavy weather handhold and cabin trim piece. Its shape makes it far easier to oil or varnish than the conventional round handrail, although the wide, flat section seems somewhat awkward after years of grabbing round rails. The 8.5’s cockpit is the maximum size we’d want to see on a boat of this size. The T-shape is designed to accommodate the optional wheel steerer, yielding a somewhat odd layout for the tiller-steered version. A bench seat spans the aft end of the cockpit. Although this makes good seating in port, we doubt that you’d want anyone sitting there under sail: too much weight in the end of the boat. It does make a natural helmsman’s seat for wheel steering. The engine controls and instrument panel are also located at the aft end of the cockpit, and are basically inaccessible to the helmsman of a tiller-steered version. There are two lifting lids in the aft cockpit bench, giving access to a cavernous space under the cockpit. To be useful, dacron bags should be fitted to the inside of these lockers. Then, they’ll be handy stowage for spare sheets and blocks. There are comfortable contoured seats along each side of the cockpit, with a huge locker under the port seat. Although plywood pen boards somewhat separate this locker from the engine space under the cockpit, it would be far too easy for deeply piled junk to get knocked over the board and into the engine. This locker should be partitioned into smaller spaces unless it is to be used exclusively as a sail locker. The battery boxes, fitted at the forward end of the locker, could benefit from plywood or fiberglass lids to keep battery acid off gear which might find its way onto the batteries. The box is designed to take two batteries—one battery is standard—stored in plastic containers. A single lid covering the whole box would be more efficient. The huge cockpit will accommodate up to six for sailing, and eight for in-port partying. The cockpit seat bottoms are contoured, and the cockpit coamings slope outboard for more comfortable seating. However, the seats are both too narrow and too short for sleeping. The forward end of the cockpit is protected by a narrow bridgedeck. However, the cockpit coatings extend a full foot above the level of the bridgedeck, To block the companionway to the level of the top of the coamings will require leaving two of the three drop boards in place when sailing.Although there is moderate taper to the sides of the companionway, making it easier to remove the drop boards, it is still necessary to lift each board about five inches before it can be removed. This is far safer than many tapered companionways, where boards practically fall out if you look at them wrong. The companionway slide is one of the best we’ve seen. It’s a contoured piece of acrylic fitted with a convenient grabrail. It slides easily in extruded aluminum channels, and is fitted with a fiberglass storm hood. As on many boats, the aft cabin bulkhead slopes forward, rendering it impossible to leave the drop boards out for ventilation when it rains.BelowdecksOwners consistently praise the interior design and finishing of S2 sailboats. From looking at the 8.5, it’s pretty easy to see why. There are no exposed interior fiberglass surfaces except the head floor pan molding. The hull and cabin overhead are lined with a carpet-like synthetic fabric. While this will undoubtedly cut down on condensation, we at first wondered how this fabric would hold up over time. Inevitably, the hull liner and even the overhead will get wet. In freshwater areas, this is no problem. The water will eventually evaporate. In salt water, however, wet fabric never seems to dry. Salt draws moisture like a magnet draws steel. Since first seeing this boat, however, we’ve had good experiences with the fabric. Be sure, however, to get a good wet-or-dry vacuum to keep it clean.Interior layout is fairly conventional, with Vberths forward, and immediately aft, a full width head. The head can be closed off from both the forward cabin and the main cabin with solid doors—a real luxury in a boat this size. There is a large hanging locker in the head, and reasonable storage space for toilet articles. The word for the main cabin is “wide,” with the settees pushed as far outboard as they can go. Décor is a little heavy on the teak for our taste, but it is one of the better coordinated interiors we have seen. S2 had a good interior decorator.A fold-down dining table seats four. When folded against the bulkhead, it is held in place by a single latch, which makes us nervous.Neither settee is full length. The foot of the port settee runs under the galley counter, making it long enough for sleeping, although your feet may feel a little claustrophobic in the tiny footwell. The starboard settee is an unusual configuration. The aftermost 12" of the settee folds up to form an arm rest, leaving a gap between the end of the settee and the head of the quarterberth.Inexplicably, this gap is referred to on the accommodation plan as a “charting area,” although there is neither a standard nor an optional chart table. It’s sort of like the designer ran out of energy before completing the interior design.Over the non-existent “charting area” is the best electrical panel we’ve seen on a 28 foot boat. The panel has a locking battery switch, battery test meter, and a panel with room for 14 circuit breakers, although only half are installed on the standard boat. The space is welcome, since with the proliferation of marine electronics most electrical panels are woefully inadequate. Most quarterberths tend to induce claustrophobia. That of the 8.5 is more likely to exacerbate any tendencies you might have to agoraphobia. At last, a quarterberth which will not give you a concussion when you sit bolt upright in the middle of the night after your neighbor drags down on you in a wind shift. The standard main cabin sole is carpet-covered fiberglass. For an additional $325, teak and holly was available for the traditionalist. We’d want it. Unfortunately there is no access to the bilge in the main cabin. None. This is inexcusable, and could be dangerous. A few hours with a saber saw should solve this rather basic problem. The galley is workable and accessible, with no awkward posturing required to do the dishes. The sink gets an A+. It is a full nine inches deep, is large enough to take a frying pan, and mounted close to the centerline. In contrast, the icebox gets a C-. It is larger than normal on a boat of this size, but it drains to the bilge, has a poorly insulated top, and a tiny, uninsulated hatch without a trace of a gasket. Boo.Because of limited counter space, the two burner Kenyon alcohol stove is mounted athwartships, rather than fore and aft. This means that the stove cannot be gimballed, and that it is necessary to reach across the inboard burner to reach the outboard one. Given the fact that countertop gimballed stoves are usually dangerous, the lack of gimballing doesn’t bother us much. What does bother us is that if you want to upgrade the stove to something more functional, the limited space allocated will stretch your ingenuity.A fold down table at the end of the galley counter gives additional counter space, but it must be left up in order to use the port settee for sleeping.Roominess, excellent execution, and good color coordination are trademarks of the interiors of all S2s, and the 8.5 fits well into this enviable tradition.ConclusionsThe S2 8.5 is a good boat for cruising the Great Lakes or any coast in comfort and a certain amount of style. Her appearance may be a little modern for traditionalists, with her straight sheer and European-style cabin windows.Pricey? Yes, but when you look at the things that go into the boat—the rig, good sails, and a comfortable, well finished interior—the price may seem a bit less painful. You still pay for what you get.

A fully articulating FLIR night vision camera system has also been added. The original Bennett trim tabs were replaced with Zipwake interceptors which utilize a built-in GPS to set them for maximum performance, at the helm is the interceptor LCD controller. The vessel has a Garmin AIS with an emergency button. VHF Garmin radio is new. Sirius weather antenna is on the mast. For real-time weather (wind speed, direction, and other parameters) an Airmar solid-state weather station is on the top of the mast. Weather is displayed on an additional Garmin screen (GMI 20) which helps when docking in windy conditions. The spotlight has been replaced with a Jabsco wireless control on the helm for pan tilt and changes from the spotlight to floodlight modes. This vessel even has a Garmin forward-looking sonar to help in shallow waters. There is a pan/tilt aft-facing camera to assist in maneuvering, which can be displayed on either of the Garmin chart plotters or on the TV. Aft Cockpit The aft cockpit was professionally installed at Newport Shipyard in 2014. An engineering study was completed by Gurit (a Danish firm specializing in marine construction) relating to the attachment and construction of the project. Since 2014 the aft cockpit extension has performed flawlessly. The vessel underway with the extension is stable and performance is excellent. The extension includes a built-in curved couch with Sunbrella nautical-themed stripes which match throughout the vessel. All exterior cushions have closed cell foam for no water absorption. A teak custom inlaid epoxy coated table adorns the sitting area. A port-side refrigerator is built into the extension bearing the Meridian logo engraved upon the door. Above the fridge is a clever pull-out electric grill. Multiple storage areas are under the couches. At the stern of the platform is a large hydraulic hatch for additional storage. The rear of the extension has a swim platform with a hatch for stowing the flip-out telescopic ladder. Appropriate cleats are attached to the platform. Upper Cockpit The upper cockpit has a couch which was installed as this space on a standard 408 is vacant. It has upgraded Sunbrella fabric which matches all other cushions. The couch has storage under cushions and a storage compartment. The couch has stainless cupholders. Across from the couch is a sink with storage cabinets for liquor bottles and a full-size ice maker in the adjacent cabinet. The port and starboard clear curved windows were originally plastic and were easily scratched and were replaced with tempered glass. Also in front of the couch is a custom epoxy-coated teak table on a hi/low base. The 32" TV faces the couch and can be rotated to face the helm area for viewing there as well. Deck Equipment All exterior gunwales, bow as well as upper and lower cockpits and swim platform have Flexiteek installed. It looks just like new teak without the upkeep and maintenance teak requires. A clever design to hide the cable and water hose includes two hatches on the cockpit floor which contain them for no tripping or unsightly cables in the cockpit. The Meridian name boards were originally plastic which during buffing were susceptible to damage and were replaced with highly polished solid stainless-steel. Anchor The anchor is the highly regarded Ultra Anchor with its optional swivel, so the anchor always comes up in the proper position. This famed Turkish stainless steel anchor's design holds ground better than any other anchor in it’s class. The first 5 feet of chain is polished stainless steel, so it looks great being visible up at the windless. The plastic anchor control covers on the bow have been replaced with polished stainless-steel covers. Additional Equipment Entertainment Equipment This vessel has a stereo system designed by a high-fidelity expert. It has a Fusion large screen LCD head unit at the helm and two remote LCD panels on the upper cockpit and one at the lower cockpit for full control. The Fusion remote units are on the NEMA network, so they can display any NEMA data, such as wind speed and direction. It has JL audio speakers through the exterior of the boat with two 12" subwoofers. Amplifiers power each of the speakers with clean power. Galley The Galley has a large Kenyon cooktop as well as a large refrigerator, freezer, and microwave. The galley also has plenty of counter space for enjoyable onboard cooking. Mechanical Equipment Engine Room All lighting in the engine room is LED. All maintenance is up to date, including the cleaning of the after coolers (port side aftercooler is new) and heat exchangers. Sherwood water pumps have been upgraded to the more dependable SMX pumps with easy-to-change impellers (not using splines or key way) but a special tool to make removal and insertion easy. The boat has a Reverso electric oil changer system. All seacocks have Groco valves which allow for pull-out plugs for easy winterization. The original float design for waste tank monitoring has been replaced by an ultrasonic device for accurate readings without the usual issues a float presents. Waste level are displayed on digital monitor. Air Conditioning All four A/C units have been replaced recently with new Cruisair units. These units have plastic pans which do not corrode or leave rust stains down the side of the boat on raw water outlets. The A/C pump is oversized and new as of 2020. Electrical Equipment Generator: Onan 9 kW Model 9MDKAV-2743 The interior electrical panel like the rest of the vessel has been fully upgraded with numerous LCD panels for all conditions of the boat and battery charging systems. Since some of the displays are on the NEMA network even all weather information including wind speed and direction can be shown as well as any other NEMA data. Underwater lighting i state-of-the-art. All lights are Lumishore with infinite color-changing capabilities. There are four large lights on the stern and two lights one on the port and one on the starboard side. A computer mainframe controls all the lighting with a DMX controller like those used at rock concerts for multiple effects. An LCD Lumishore light control panel is on the platform extension. Control can also be done with an iPad using custom software. The Custom stainless vessel name "Prime Time" also lights up and is interfaced with the DMX system and can be synced to follow the colors of the underwater lights as well as many other lighting modes. If the name of the boat changes, the existing wiring can be used for new vessel name. Even the horns have been upgraded to Khalenberg air horns loud enough to get the attention of any size vessel. Security systems The vessel has an alarm system with all exterior doors as well as a contact that sets off the alarm if the canvas cover for the helm electronics panel is removed. There are 4 blinking red LEDs at all entry points when the alarm is armed. A keyless wireless remote arms/disarms. Also there are port and stbd forward facing cameras and two aft facing cameras which record to a DVR. These cameras can also be displayed on chartplotter or helm TV for assistance when docking The Vessel has a new 2021 ACR full-size EPIRB. Salon The salon has two opposing couches with the port side couch having 3 pull-out footrests. Storage is under the starboard couch. All woodwork throughout the boat is cherry and in outstanding condition. All carpeting in the boat is excellent and stain-free. The salon has a 32" 4K HDTV with a Yamaha receiver and Dish Network equipment hidden in a cabinet. Four speakers are in the salon, with two subwoofers under the couch for surround sound. There is also a CD changer with AM/FM radio under the TV. Stairs leading to the galley and bow stateroom lift up where the washer/Dryer and central vac system is located. Accommodations Owner Stateroom: The owner's stateroom is a few steps down from the salon back aft. The stateroom provides ample hanging closet space, a large bed with easy access on both sides, a large window for plenty of light into the aft cockpit, a large head, and a separate shower space. VIP Stateroom: Forward of the galley is the VIP Stateroom with ensuite head, sink, and a separate enclosed stall shower. There is a separate door leading to the head from the salon for “day head” access. The aft-facing sleeping area has easy accessibility from port or starboard and plenty of storage lockers/closets. The Newport 28 is a moderate weight sailboat which is a reasonably good performer. It is very stable / stiff and has a good righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a coastal cruiser.

i'm biased, but.......... As I said, I'm biased, but if you can find an O"day 28 I think you'll be happy. However, $10,000-$13,000 is cutting it close. AS a matter of fact, there's an O"Day 28 for sale right now in Portland Or. for $12,900 (I'm sure the price is negotiable) here's the link for it.......... http://www.yachtworld.com/core/listing/pl_boat_detail.jsp?currency=USD&units=Feet&checked_boats=1309615&slim=quick&

Newport 28 Hello, Mike own's and likes O'day, I own and like Newport. Newport's were made in California, so lots should be available on the west cost. Compared to O'day, the Newport has a double berth in the cabin (the port sette slides out). Also, all Newport come with the traveler mounted on top of the companionway. Most Newports come with hot water, fresh water cooled diesel, and some other things as well. As far as I can tell, both the Newport and the O'day are good boats. Good luck, Barry

Cal 29 or 27 probably fall into this price range, and less if needing work. Large cabins, good performance, good reputation.

Hunter 27 for two The Hunter 27 built from 75-84 to a design by John Cherubini is just the right size for a couple. It's a seaworthy design, with 6 feet of headroom in the cabin. The bench seats in the cabin make very comfortable bunks (easily reached by stiff knees.) The ride is comfortable in a seaway, and the cockpit is comfortable, with good back support. Ours was easily rigged for single handing, so the Admiral does not need to go on deck. And the price is right - $9,000 to $12,000 will get you going. (Ours '77 cost $9,000 and was ready to sail.) At your size and price parameters, you will end up with a "good old boat" and the associated maintenance work. Do get a survey to be sure you are not buying a project, and enjoy cruising! David Lady Lillie

Pearson 26-28 I learned how to sail at the boston harbor sailing club where they have a fleet of pearson 26 and 28's. The members sail these boats in all kinds of new england weather through a busy harbor and scatterred islands. They are built tough sail between 5 and 6 knots, have thick fiberglass hulls and seldom break down.

Go for a Catalina 27 *! I realize the Catalina 27 isn't a 28 footer, but I think it would be a good match for your needs. They are plentiful, within your price range, have a large cockpit, seaworthy, and have nice sailing characteristics. If you could spend the extra $5K, the O'Day 28 is a better boat - faster (but can pound), and very well finished. Having owned both boats, if price is the biggest constraint, go with the C27. -Mark

Augie byllott.

Comfortable boat for a couple Is there anything compelling about 28'? I recently sold a 1978 Catalina 30 after enjoying it for 15 years. Those additional two feet move the comfort level light years above the Catalina 27 owned by one of my friends. The cabin fever that one may experience on a smaller boat vanishes on the C30. A larger head, vee berth, saloon, dinette, and cockpit make a world of difference where a woman's comfort is concerned. With more than seven thousand having been built, there are always hundreds of C30s on the market. With a little horse trading and jawboning, you might be able to find one in your price range. It's worth a try. If anything, I believe that a C30 is easier to sail than a C27.

Thanks for your response Thanks for your comments. Condsidering they aren't making them anymore, do you think there are problems getting parts for the Newports? I have read that the O'day stiffens in higher winds and is more forgiving when you get into troubling times. How would compare the Newport as far as safety and structural quailty and durability?

Newport Info Hello, A great site for Newport Info is here: http://webhost.sailnet.com/newport/index.html Regarding parts availability, one thing I have learned is that most parts on a sailboat don't come from the original manufacturer. For example, the engine is from Universal diesel, the steering is Edson, the winches are Lewmar, the headsail roller furler is Profurl, the bilge pump is rule, the ..... What did come from from the manufacturer you can now get from the aftermarket. O'day, Pearson, CnC (for a while anyway) all went out of busines. Hunter and Catalina are still in business, but I don't think you can still buy a rudder or something like that for a Catalina 27. Good luck, Barry

Pearson 28 HI Gordon, Don't rule out the Pearson 28. The models made before 1982 can be found quite reasonably. This boat was built very well, is strong, safe, roomy and very easy and fun to sail. We owned one for 4 years and loved it. You can get one in the price range you mention. Go to yachtworld and check them out. Joanie

Hunter 28.5 We have an '88 model. VERY well built, no blister problems. Taken her on 3-week trips on Lake Michigan covering some 600 miles total. Have been in all kinds of weather with her and she's always brought us home safely. I often single-hand her as well.

Hunter 28.5, Pt II I, too, own a Hunter 28.5 (1986 model). While I think Hunter packed a lot of value into this model boat, I don't think you could find one in very good condition for your price range. I do think you could find one for just a bit more (say around $15k), but you'd probably have to put some work into it and perhaps buy some new sails. I personally believe that the 28.5 is a great boat for single-handling, coastal or river/lake cruising with a small family in a semi-protected environment, or similar sailing. But in the price range you mention, most of the listed 28 or so footers are going to be in the 1978-1982 or so age group. Any boat that is 25 or so years old needs to be VERY carefully inspected, by you and a professional surveyor as it could be subject to a number of conditions that could be expensive or prohibitive to repair. In the interim, you may want to take a look at Don Casey's book "Inspecting The Aging Sailboat." It will give you a better sense of how to evaluate some of the candidate boats you may look at. It's a buyer beware world out there....

Gordon, The best 28 is a Catalina 28 and because of that they are very expensive. The next best and most boat for the money is a Hunter 28... not a Hunter 28.5. The Pearson 28 is the next best followed by the Hunter 28.5. The main reason for the rating is the walk through swim platform offer by both the Catalina 28 and the Hunter 28! Great for the family getting on and off the boat and into the water. The construction of the Catalina is better than the Hunter. The Pearson construction is also better than Hunter. I own a Hunter 28 and love the boat! I took a long time reviewing which boat to buy. Everyone will tell you they love thier boat. I do too but a Catalina is better!

This thread could go on for ever We all bought our current boat for one reason or another price, walk through transomes, loyalty to the brand and so on and we all could come up with reason's as to why. So asking a question like the best 28 footer for the money and you will get a different answer from each of us. So it is not really a fair question to ask because your best 28 footer for the money may not be mine. Taken in what your needs are all the boats mentioned would work. They are all great boats and have ther good and bad. But it all comes down to YOU and the $$$. Keep in mind that in this price range you will be buying a 30 year + boat. That will need upgrades and might have a gas engine or an out board. Look for the right deal and keep in mind the survey could eat up 5% of your boat money. So it is tough to say which boat is the best for you and your needs. Also keep in mind that your wife will need to climb all over the boat and up and down into the cabin bad knees and all. So a boat with wide side deck's might be a consideration over a boat with narrow side decks. Plus the climbing of the steps of 5 or 6 steps to get down below. It will really comne down to looking at allot of boat's and seeing which boat fit's the needs. Your price range will limit you and might force you into buying a older boat than maybe you had thought and also throw in the location. Boats on the West Coast seem to bring more for the same boat on the East Coast. Cliff

Finding and buying your boat Having contributed my 2 cents on our own model, here is my recommendation on how to buy a boat: In your price and size range, you are loooking for a "good old boat." Many of us own these great models from the 70's and early 80's. In general, they have great cruising designs, overbuilt hulls (because this was before anyone really understood fiberglass), and may involve some maintenance. (Although we sailed Lady Lillie through her first summer, 500 miles, and 22 nights on board as we bought her.) Look at lots of boats in your price range. This will be the hardest part for your wife's knees, but after a while you will settle on a few designs you like, and you can look without her until you find the one you want. Lay down in all the berths you might use. Sit in the cockpit. Stand in the galley, and go through the motions of preparing food and washing dishes. Sit on the head. Go forward from sitting in the cockpit along the decks to the bow. Don't worry about the model, you will figure out which ones you like. Consider using a local agent who is supportive of your wishes (not trying to seelyou up to a higher price,) and can arrange to get you on a lot of boats. Buy one of the good books on this site that describe how to buy a cruising sailboat. Read the reviews on this website. 28 footers were not commonly built in the '74-'85 range you need for your price, so look at the 27 and 30 footers. The boats for sale on this and other sites can get you started, and help you understand pricing. Find _your_ surveyer. Ask other sailers who is the most competent and trustworthy in your area. This is imporatnt because a good survey allows you to understand 80% to 90% of the maintenance you will be doing in the first years of boat ownership. You contract must include the survey, and your right to walk away or negotiate a price reduction based on the survey results. Take your time. Many boats will come on the market in the next six months, and you can find the one with just the characteristics you want and like. Our search took about 6 weeks during which we climbed into about 10 boats on the hard (and in the ice and snow.) We came down to a choice between a Catalina 30 at $18,000, and a Hunter 27 at $9,000. We checked with the marina near our house, and they said that the 5 1/2 foot draft of the Catalina was too deep for the marina. We bought the '77 Hunter 27, and have loved her. The cabin has headroom to 6 feet. The diesel will drive us all day through calm seas, but is a little small if we are bucking wind and waves (something we try always to plan, or wait around.) There is plenty of room and comfort for the Admiral and me. We sleep in the v-berth, where 5' 11" and 5' 8" means that we play footsie occasionally, but are both very comfortable. The bench berths in the main cabin easily and confortably accommodate my two brothers who go a large 6' 2". The accommodations are ideal for me and my wife. We have spent two weeks on her, and could easily go a month. Although tight and familiar, my Dad, brothers and I have cruised a week on her, and we are quite comfortable. I believe that we would have been just as happy on the Catalina 30, but shoal draft is a real value for some of the ports, and anchorages of Lake Erie when the water is low. I really don't believe there is any clear choice of one model. Any of those mentioned so far (and a number of others) could be your boat. Your boat is out there, near you. Educate yourself, and invest in climbing aboard enough to find the fit for you. If the workmanship is good enough to last 20 to 30 years, and pass your survey, you don't have to worry about your time on her. Do it, you will love the joys of cruising - anyway, we do. David Lady Lillie

Plan for incidental costs If your budget is tight, look out for the costs that you may have in getting your boat to its new home and making it yours. In addition to the survey and cost of a sea trial (we paid for a marina worker to sail the boat at the sea trial), we paid to have the mast taken down, truck to our lake, put the mast up. Altogether, it was about $1,800 with survey and sea trial included. We bought a 27' Starwind (1984) and then put another $1,400 into re-upholstering everything, including new foam for all cushions. Then I needed to replace a halyard and a main sheet, buy new dock lines and hardware for the slip, another $400 at West Marine for stuff, new sails maybe next year ... you get the picture. We looked at about 8 boats over a couple weeks and we were anxious to find one before the summer ran away from us this year. We noticed a big difference in the comfort factor between the Cal 2-27 and our boat compared to the others which were all 26' or less. So you are certainly looking for the right size. You can put a lot of emphasis on all the practical elements of a boat, but for me, it mainly comes down to how does she make you feel to look at her for the first time (and every other time thereafter). Everytime I look at her, I'm happy with what we bought. I don't think you can be happy with a boat if you don't feel that emotion. Then, you just better be prepared emotionally to walk away if the survey reveals problems that you're not prepared financially to overcome. My wife and I had that feeling for 2 boats ... first for the Cal, which slipped away because we didn't make an offer quick enough. We looked longingly at ads for a few Catalinas that were just out of reach for what we wanted to spend on our first boat. Luckily, I think we are very happy with the Starwind because it has many features and layout differences that make it a better boat for us. Take a good look around, use as much time as you need ... when you find her, you'll know it!

Seafarer I have 2 Seafarer 30 footers. They were designed by McCurdy and Rhodes in 1978. Its a VERY safe, heavy duty and large for its length boat. There is a very good and active forum for these (one reason I bought one). I want to sell one (I bought the 2nd one for the trailer it was on and the 9 sails that came with it as well as having a back up in case I needed anything). The boat was one of the few to survive Ivan intact, and with no damage to it (except rubrail scuffing). The owners group had a mould made for the rubrail, so a new one is available inexpensively. It has a 23 hp Volvo 2 cylinder diesel that has 360+ or- hours, and looks almost new(the engine and tranny). The baot needs a good cleanup (from being stored and unused) recover upholstery, varnish brightwork, etc and the installation of the engine (i would do for additional cash). I want $4500.00 for it, as is. Look at yachtworld for Seafarer Swiftsure 30. Also compare hullspeed, quality of construction, and owners comments. This is a GREAT deal and very safe if you don't mind cleaning a little and upholstering it to your wifes tastes. let me know if interested. Tommy [email protected]

What about the Columbia 8.3? Any reason the Columbia 8.3 wasn't mentioned? This appears to be a well built cruiser/club racer that should be in the price range.

1983 Capital Yachts Newport 28-2

  • Description

Seller's Description

This is a very nice 1983 Newport 28-2. It’s been converted to electric and has fresh batteries. A year ago it had a major repair with the head replaced the head sail reconditioned and the main cleaned. It also has spare head and main sails. It has a new bimini for those warm Arizona days along with a hatch drop in a/c for this warm nights. This is a very nice boat that’s only for sale because we’re moving aboard our other sailboat which is in Mexico.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Based on the same hull as the NEWPORT 28-1, this version featured an updated rudder and keel as well as completely redesigned coach roof and interior. The NEWPORT 28 was hugely successful with more than 1000 boats built (including both versions).

Mailbag: Planned bump in mooring costs would equate to eviction for offshore Newport residents

Being a retired biomedical engineer who has brought over 100 products to market from surgical clips and clamps to heart valves to radiosurgical robots, I am trying to hang onto my dream of living aboard my boat in Newport Beach. After hearing of the move to raise the already high rental rates by over 300%, I spoke out at the last two City Council meetings on this subject. I keep up on the rates up and down the coast, so I knew the city’s appraisal was an outright lie. We mooring holders own our mooring tackle, and the city provides us no services, yet we were compared to Balboa Yacht Club and Morro Bay, who own the moorings, and their rent is therefore not comparable because they provide services such as dinghy dock, taxi service, trash removal and so on. The disparity is even worse when you compare a homeowner dock tidal space at $400 per year for 40-foot dock which enjoys all the benefits of a home — and even now we pay three times that.

I implore you to research this miscarriage of justice and do so before our city council votes this in. It means hundreds of people will no longer be able to afford to keep a boat in Newport, much less live on one.

James Bentson Newport Beach

A new proverb for the times

By 2025, the Beek family, who own the famed Balboa Island Ferry that traverses the Newport Bay every day, will need to make some drastic changes that merit doing away with the gasoline engines for all three of their ferries making way to electrification. As it stands right now, the family hasn’t the funds to do that. An $8.3-million grant from the California Air Resources Board will get them closer, but they still have a ways to go.

Not being a religious person, I don’t usually pay attention to items of a church-type nature or sayings or interpretations of a religious nature. But I’m reminded of a long ago saying that goes, “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.”

With a little luck and a more contemporary way of looking at things that saying could be: “Dressed are the Beek, for they will inhabit the bay.”

Hey, you never know, as stranger things have happened.

Bill Spitalnick Newport Beach

Ignoring public will draw disdain

As the saying goes, “if you can’t stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen.” so if Huntington Beach City Councilman Tony Strickland did not want to put up with the crowd shouting “shame” after the vote to start the bid process for privatization of the public library, after hearing 108 speakers and more then 600 emails almost all against it, he should step down.

Strickland and his right-wing colleagues also voted to withdraw from the league of California Cities, with Councilman Casey McKeon stating that the organization advocates for the state’s agenda instead of individual cities, in the same way that the majority right-wing city council members advocate for themselves, instead of the majority of the electorate who voiced their opinion in opposition to privatization.

It is truly a shameful city council majority who refuses to listen to the voice of the people.

Richard C. Armendariz Huntington Beach

At what point will the Huntington Beach City Council majority quit lying to themselves and the community about challenging greater authorities over issues like Voter ID and housing?! They can’t and won’t win against the county and state no matter how much they delude themselves over their grievances.

These autocratic amateurs are bound to be slapped down once more for their abject failure to adopt a new housing element. It will not only cost us in lawsuits, but it will cost us in decision-making power to plan our own future. The defiance of City Atty. Michael Gates is going to ruin our city, and the fact that his ideological slip is showing impresses nobody but the MAGA base he plays to.

This poor excuse for representative local government has done nothing constructive since taking power. All its members can do is tear down our norms and institutions and leave civic wreckage behind. Already, they are about to trash one of the greatest library systems in the county in a puritanical pique over bogus biblio blasphemy. There is a reason for this. It is that the majority has no clue about governing properly and serving the true best interests of the citizenry. The public is finally waking up to this sad realization.

As Abraham Lincoln is said to have expounded, “You can fool all of the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time.”

Tim Geddes Huntington Beach

Commissioners can learn from disagreement

Re: “ Gaza war threatens peace on O.C. Human Relations Commission ,” Daily Pilot & Times OC, March 24.

It is appalling that a “Human Relations Commission” would even remotely consider removing a member because he has a dissenting opinion. Human relations is about listening, understanding, learning and then assimilating differences — and suggesting solutions.

The facts are fairly straightforward as long as all the facts are included. 1) Hamas has fired rockets at civilian populations, taken hostages and brutally killed men, women and children. They did this knowing full well that Israel would declare war and hiding behind Palestinian civilians would result in civilian deaths. 2) Hamas has been investing Gaza’s funds into weapons, rockets and tunnels rather than infrastructure. Gaza was an independent Palestinian state, but the Palestinian leadership failed to manage a Palestinian state which could co-exist with Israel. 3) After 75 years of wars, attacks, suicide bombers and terrorist attacks by Arab states and Palestinians, it is understandable that Israel might be skeptical that a Palestinian state can peacefully co-exist with a Jewish one. There was a two-state solution in 1948 until Arab countries declared war. 4) Regretfully, Israeli leadership seems to believe that there can be a long-term peace by taking land from Palestinians and refusing to consider a two-state solution. 5) What is missing from the debate so far is the assurance that two-state solution means peace and security long term for both parties.

Ceasefires have come and ceasefires have gone over 75 years. Long-term peace and security awaits the world leaders of all countries to be willing to stop taking sides and instead guarantee peaceful co-existence of a Palestinian state and a Jewish state.

Maybe the O.C Human Relations Commission can be a spark for a solution. Protest less and problem-solve more. It’s about human relations, not winning and losing.

Business | finally, bass pro shops outdoor world opens in irvine, it took an hour for the crowd to make its way inside the converted walmart supercenter..

28 ft newport sailboat

If you think in-person shopping is dead, or there is a recession brewing, you weren’t at the grand opening of the Bass Pro Shops’ Outdoor World in Irvine .

Or, if you want to see how merchants are surviving online retailing or a supposed economic downturn, you should have been at Wednesday night’s debut.

Let’s set the scene. Before the official ribbon-cutting ceremony , guests saw an hour or so of country music plus introductions of superstars from the fishing world, as well as a Bass Pro-wrapped race car. What else would you expect from a hunting and fishing retailer with Missouri roots?

The parking lot’s crowd was deep enough that stragglers waited an hour after the opening to enter the store. You see, this is only the second Outdoor World in the region, with the other store in Rancho Cucamonga .

Being “rare” isn’t enough to build a sustainable buzz. This atypical big-box retailer creates what industry insiders call a “destination” shopping experience: A typical shopper travels 30-plus miles to one of 90 Bass Pros across the nation – and spends over 2 hours shopping inside.

It begins with a look. If you’ve been to a Bass Pro, you know the detail that goes into construction – inside and out. The brand’s signature exterior is a spin on a mountain-high hunting lodge. It might seem odd for Orange County, but we’re also home to Disneyland’s curious imagery.

Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World opened Wednesday, March 27 in Irvine to huge crowds and plenty of entertainment. Notable celebrities in the fishing, racing and country music realm were on hand to greet customers on the first day of business. (Jonathan Lansner/SCNG, Orange County Register)

When you enter the 140,000-square-foot store – under a sign “Welcome Fishermen, Hunters, and Other Liars” – eyes turn to an homage to the surrounding community. The store walls have almost a museum-like vibe in tribute to the region.

Bass Pros are known for huge aquariums. The water feature in Irvine honors the waterfall in nearby Black Star Canyon. Elsewhere, there are artistic tip-of-the-caps to the Santa Ana Mountains, Newport Beach and Diamond Valley Lake in Riverside County. And there are plenty wall-mounted antlers, too.

Design curve

It’s a fabulous retooling of the site near the I-5 exit at Alton that previously had mixed success.

The massive store along Technology Drive once was a home-furnishing experiment from Sears, curiously named “The Great Indoors.” That was followed by a Walmart Supercenter that closed in 2021 . To be fair, there’s an always-crowded Costco at the other end of the retail center.

Nearly two years ago, Bass Pro and landlord Irvine Co. agreed to leasing terms. Construction seemingly took forever – an endeavor whose duration is better explained when seeing the new store.

Bass Pro was well ahead of the design curve. Mass-market sporting goods stores can no longer compete with online sellers if their space is simply jammed with aisles of merchandise. Just look at splashy Dick’s in Mission Viejo or Fashion Island.

But if slick architecture guaranteed retailing riches, the list of successful merchants would be long. A key to what makes Bass Pro founder and CEO Johnny Morris a billionaire is what’s available in the aisles.

Much of the merchandise is from brands owned or controlled by the retailer, or goods from other brands exclusive to the chain. That keeps margins high – and helps pay for the pricey decor.

Outdoors frequently?

You don’t have to be an outdoors person – a fan of fishing or hunting – to spend here.

Yes, they seem to have every bit of gear or apparel needed for those outdoor pursuits. Did I mention the fishing boats and off-road vehicles?

But if you’re simply outdoors frequently, this store could be useful. Southern Californians, perhaps surprised by all the weather events this year, might find a trip valuable.

Or perhaps you need a better folding chair to watch the kids play sports or for an outdoor concert? Or a new backyard grill – utensils or spices? How about some odd trail snacks or sweets? Or various knickknacks that could dress up a home or backyard?

And then there’s those darn trucker caps.

Somehow, a $6 hat with a big Bass Pro logo has become a hot fashion item. (Full disclosure: I own two!)

On opening night, numerous shoppers had stacks of those caps in various colors in their shopping baskets. The store even sold an upgraded version – $15 each – with a Bass Pro logo, a small map of California and the words “Irvine CA” embroidered on it.

That’s how online shopping is thwarted. How recessions are survived. Basically, it’s branding.
